Title: Running With Lions
Author: Julian Winters
Genre: YA Fiction | Romance | Friendship | Sports | LGBTQ+
Content Warnings: (Brief) Homophobia
Overall Rating: 6.3/10
Personal Opinion: Everyone expects Sebastian to be the next team captain. They expect him to lead the team to victory. When his childhood friend joins the team, that status is suddenly put into jeopardy because Sebastian just doesnât know what to do with him. As they bond over drills and practice, old feelings and new ones form between Sebastian and Emir. A captivating tale of a dysfunctional found family playing sports and the love that can blossom on the field.
Couple Classification: Sebastian X Emir = Jock X Goth
Do I Own This Book? Nope.
Spoilers Below For My Likes & Dislikes:
Likes:
- Honestly, Sebastian and Emir are a much better couple than Wes and Nico. Their falling out made sense to me. They had a lot more chemistry. Sebastianâs desire to help came from this place of responsibility and also nostalgia and goodwill. Emirâs shyness reminded me of when I was taken to France and then brought back. I wasnât gone as long (I think) but that can really impact a person emotionally. I think their banter was nice and the tension when Emir was grumpy was cute. Their movie date was adorable, their rain practice was romantic, their skinny dipping was captivating, I was honestly so into it. I do think they have their issues, in particular I hate that they really spent weeks after that dumb fight not really talking. Itâs just bullshit honestly. Carl was in the wrong and yeah Emir can take care of himself but that is not an excuse to get so mad at Sebastian for wanting to help. Ugh, teenagers in love are so annoying with their decisions sometimes. But what else is new?
- Willie is a ray of sunshine. He had a crush on Sebastian but he never let his feelings get in the way of cheering them on. He supported Sebastianâs love for Emir and reminded me so much of Suga from Haikyuu!! Heâs a senior, he got benched (because of an injury), but he was the loudest cheerleader and strictest coach working on the sidelines. I have so much respect for him because heâs not only totally in-touch with his feelings but he tries so hard to include everyone around him. A ray of sunshine.
- The scene where Grey took down Mason in a scrimmage is iconic. She showed him up in front of everyone. I had rolled my eyes at the idea of Mason agreeing to a date due to a bet but the fact that she declined, queen shit. She just trashed his reputation, united the team, and rejected him in front of all the boys. I think it was a humbling experience for Mason too and actually made him realize that the way heâs been treating women has been wrong. It gives real Sokka/Suki vibes and I do hope Mason will take this experience and truly grow from it. Be better, bitch.
- The dialogue cracks me up. Especially when Mason said he was thinking of asking out Patrick (Greyâs last name) and Sebastian said âPatrick from the track team?â and Will said âCoach Patrick?â Like I actually wheezed.
- The drive-in movie date was probably my favorite chapter. To begin with, it was adorable. Also, when Valâs friend was flirting with Emir, it was just so funny. Especially when she stomped over after Emir told her he was gay. And then he went and wrapped his arms around Sebastian and put his fingers through the belt loops like SIR! He was really rubbing it in. And Sebastian was eating it up too, it was so cute.Â
Dislikes:
- Distance is so hard to measure in several scenes. Like when the team was going into town and Sebastian was somehow talking to Emir who was sitting outside on the front steps of his cabin but Bastian was by the car and I just did not know where anyone was standing in proximity to others at any point. Or when Sebastianâs in the locker room. Where was he hiding when the St. Catherine bigots were talking shit to Emir and Hunter? They just straight up didnât notice him. Or when they were eating ice cream. I pictured an actual shop, not just a window where they get ice cream. I donât even know where the windows were positioned when Sebastian would sneak into Emirâs room. It was confusing and messed with my vision of events.
- Emirâs attitude makes sense to me but I think it was taken to the extremes at times. Like when he scowled at Hunter for sitting at his table. He also has such a supportive family and his dadâs not mad at him for his sexuality so why was he working so hard to impress him with soccer? To me, it doesnât make sense. Raj is clearly a supportive, loving dad so what brought this on? Emirâs so shy and easily explosive that I canât imagine him wanting to do soccer, a team sport, unless his dad was disappointed in him at some point. The entire team did not help in making Emir fit in, but Emir shouldâve met them halfway. Whatâs worse is that after the big fight, Emir was suddenly getting along well with Zach and Hunter. I donât get it. Like if it was that easy then the fight shouldnât have been such a big deal. Someone shouldâve apologized sooner.
- Sebastian not coming out also doesnât make sense to me. His entire family is clearly supportive and loving, they donât give a shit. I get it, the stigma exists. Heâs in the machismo world of sports but he surrounded by queer folks and his coach would never reject any kid for their sexuality so what is up?
- Mason Riley can eat shit. I hate him. Look, if even his own friends root against him, I donât think he is a good person. Mason is out here being so rude to a girl that had a crush on him. He clearly didnât make an effort for Val either and he literally talked shit about Emir at every turn for no reason. For no reason! Carl too! Fuck Carl! What happened? What did Emir do to make them hate him like that? Just because heâs a bit standoffish? It made me so mad because theyâre ânot like other jocksâ but they certainly fucking acted like it.
- The coaches are great in that they donât care about sexuality or gender identity in sports but man do they put too much pressure on Sebastian. Itâs no wonder heâs a wreck. Plus, if all of these kids are puking during their drills, I donât think theyâre doing it right. To me, it just sounds like child endangerment. They donât even care for them if they fail, itâs just a lot of yelling. They also just break up fights instead of actually reprimanding the ones at fault? I mean, itâs bullshit. It just almost screams performative.Â

Fem Nico Headcanons for @heyimboredtalktome Hope you enjoy these mom!
He wears flowy skirts that twirl prettily and make Will cry of happiness
He uses dresses and makeup to enhance his Addams Family Vibes. His goal is for someone to mistake him for Mortitia or Wednesday
He has skeleton hand hair clips
And braids! He loves braids. Waterfall braids, dutch braids, french braids, braided braids, everything
He usually has a pencil or paintbrush stuck in his hair ngl
He has a makeup account where he does goth looks and SFX. he turned Will into Darth Maul on his birthday and omg it was amazing
When he wears shoes, high heels, high heeled thigh high boots, those cute clunky sneakers(see image below), or combat boots boots. Usually just barefoot with vintage goth dresses tho
Has 100% worn a Victorian era dress with heels and a sword as he walked through the Strawberry fields at camp because aesthetic
Pink and blue streaks in his hair! He lost a bet and Loved it so he sticks with it (literally the most colourful thing about him)
Will makes him both flower crowns so when heâs not wearing a tiara or crown heâs got a head full of flowers. Theyâre always aesthetic and gothish
Beautifully painted nails at all times. His hands are always different colours/patterns
Heâs like a magpie and loves shiny things, so he always has different rings and earrings and necklaces and bracelets that Leo helped him make out of shiny rocks and stuff that he found on the sidewalk or at flea markets
He has ribbons tied into his hair all the time!
He has cute little belts to tie at his waist with a-line dresses! There are gold, silver, black, and olive green belts in his closet
He figure skates and has cute little outfits (see Tammieâs post here)
He has cute little bat bags and stuff

He has a number of oversized fluffy hoodies in the full colour spectrum of white to grey to black! Theyâre so fluffy and warm and Nico loves them
OVERALLS! He never wore them when he was little, but he loves them! Black and grey overalls over sheer shirts and fluffy hoodies are his favourite
About half of his clothes are splattered with paint ngl
(Not fem Nico but Artist Nico can be fem too, right? He usually has charcoal dust smeared across his face and ink stains on his fingers)
Lashes King! He naturally has long and voluminous lashes but with mascara and occasionally false lashes? Stunning
Heâs usually got a smokey eye and tons of eyeliner (occasionally smudged for the aesthetic)
Heâs very flexible and loves gymnastics. He loves the bars, and can do a reverse giant (really cool thing tho)
He has so many sheer shirts and fishnet shirts
He 100% has a cloak with red swirls at the bottom that he wears over Victorian dresses and skirts
Black lace gloves ALL THE TIME
And heâs got one of those 20âs lady cigarette holder things for the aesthetic of it
Heâs got a 40âs movie star hat with the veil (like his mother wore) and he wears pearls cause heâs a classy bitch
Corsets? Hells yes mf. He wears corsets all the time over white flowy shirts cause he feels like a pirateâ
Dyed half his hair white for a year because Melanie Martinez is amazing
Pentagram necklaces
He, Thalia, Piper and Reyna trade clothes cause they all have the same general style of âcomfortable and ready to kick assâ
Has worn knee high socks and he will again
He definitely wears monochrome floral blouses and skirts and dresses
Capris! They are the shortest his pants will ever get. His skirts get to just below his knees and thatâs as high up cause heâs a classy bitch and people donât need to see his legs (not me projecting at all here... cough cough)
No matter what Nico you have (fem, androgynous, masc, whatever) heâs a clothing thief. He steals hoodies and jackets and t-shirts from EVERYONE and theyâve all learned to live with it. Hopdie thief, tshirt thief, boot thief, accessories thief
Eyeliner with cat eyes and the ones pointing down in the inner corner of his eyes
Constantly dripping in jewels to add to the rich cryptic goth vibe heâs got going for him
Basically he channels his inner Mortitia Addams and his inner Janice Ians
Literally hasnât cut his hair since the military school. Itâs down to his waist at this point (isnât this canon?)
Victory Curls?? HELLS YES
HATS. Big hats, wide brims, cowboy hats, veiled 1930âs hats, beanies. ALL THE HATS
Lots of photos but I hope you enjoy this!

if you know me, you know that i fricken LOVE high school musical, and this is literally just the start of the first movie but solangelo and honestly a little more iconic please read even if ur not a hsm fan
paper/plastic by @rosyredlipstick
the fact that this is from 2018 and took this long to get into my rec list is tragic because i think about this fic a lot... a lot. mortal au. very chill, strangers to lovers, very good vibes, will be rereading soon (everything rosy writes is amazing we already knew this)
10:37pm by @buoyantsaturn
surprise another cj fic! fun fact she debated with us for a good half hour about what to title this fic so go read it so you can tell her you like the name (and the fic itself... its a very good fic) (tw // alchohol and drug use for this one)
Sunflower by ChiseHatori
3 days in the infirmary is probably the easiest trope u can find in the solangelo tag but i have to say this one really made me soft just bc it feels a lot more in character than some of the others ive read, and it basically picks up right where they ended in the books
Will You, or Will You Not? by @thebluesideofmyworld
marriage fics... also very soft. just boys bein boys. dual engagements. mortal au. all that good stuff vv soft i loved it
let your heart win by @justanothervampiregirl

femboy hooters, or the time percy jackson failed to keep a secret by luciethebean
its all fun and games until the fic turns out to genuinely be really good. like, yes the title is exactly what you think it is but it doesnt matter bc its so fricken well written im^@*#&(*)($_$#&^@$(@*)* yeah
Of Ties and Significant Annoyances by seokjinvilla (@thechampagnecocainegasoline)
we dont support jkr in this household but what we do support is this bc this plot is genius and i love it
everythingâs going swimmingly by tsunamiroll (@catboy-ethan)
fun fact i posed the idea of a sports/team prompt to the sw mod crew literally just so someone would pull through and write a swim au and ethan DID without even knowing. i love them and their writing style is so !!!! please read it
when you smile (the whole world stops) by tsunamiroll (@catboy-ethan)
another ethan fic!! this is the perfect fic for a rough day where u just want some cuddles bc thats literally the plot of the fic. i love this one with my entire heart its very fluffy 10/10 do reccomend
pumpkin spice (i hate it, it's not nice) (ok maybe it's a little nice) by tsunamiroll (@catboy-ethan)

Burnt Plastic (and Other Bad Ideas) by More_of_This
so this one isnt exactly romantically solangelo but it is hilarious in my opinion and i absolutely adore well written college aus and while i know nothing about college this fic is so funny to me (if you read the tags there is, in fact, a raccoon involved) (tw // drinking for this one)
all because you kissed me goodnight by @buoyantsaturn
i have been WAITING for a mortal counselors au and im sure theres some out there already but yâall already know im a cj stan! lots of slowburn, friends to lovers, coworkers, all the good stuff (and i named this one and offered cj a lot of materials from my own camp so this one especially hits!! i reccomend for those good ol summer vibes!!) (tw // drinking for this one)
Waiting With You by @buoyantsaturn
oh boy buckle up if u want an angst ride because this fic tore me apart. i keep threatning cj with âdont pull another waiting with youâ. that being said, very much feels like a movie while youre reading it, very fluffy in the middle, we love mutual pining.Â

Parent Trap, Ch. 6
NicoMaki, Love Live, 3.8K, 6/?
Summary: More things happen in the wrong order.
Girls On Film
Eli had texted that Nico had stopped by the office, upset, so Eli would be home too late for dinner. Nozomi frowned as the evening went on and the twins restlessness increased. So she sat them down with their own decks of playing cards, pulled out her Tarot cards and focused on Eli.
Lovers, always The Lovers, always connected with Eli. Magician Reversed, that was a little concerning. Something not going according to plan...followed by a reversed Ten Of Cups, the idyllic family scene overturned, conflicting values...Nozomi frowned and dealt another card: Queen Of Wands. That was a relief. Or a call to face up to something. But definitely an argument that even if Nozomiâs current path hit a few bumps, there was confidence in her decision.
âMommy?â
Vik, ever sensitive to mood, sat next to Nozomi. Teddy was using both decks to build a card tunnel.
âYes, Vik.â
âIs Mama mad at you?â
Vik always got to the point. They were extremely reliable about finding the one nagging weakness in either Nozomi or Eliâs arguments about anything and skewering it, directly on target.
âNo, Auntie Nico just wanted to talk to her.â
âIs Auntie Nico mad at you?â
Nozomi chuckled, that was the question that kept coming back to her mind. âI donât know, Đ Ńйка (sweetie), maybeâŚâ
Vik pointed at the Queen Of Wands, âThatâs a Queen? She has short hair like me.â
âYes, she does.â
âIs she friendly?â
Nozomi bobbed her head, debating how to reply. Vik had been showing more interest in the Tarot recently, âFriendly, but firm if youâve messed up.â
âLike Mama.â
Nozomi couldnât hold in the belly laugh as Vik spoke exactly what sheâd been thinking.
âMOMMY!!! Look at this.â Teddy was waving frantically at her tunnel, tilting precariously at the start. âTake a picture for Mama.â
âOkay, ХОНнŃĐľ (Sunshine).â Nozomi grabbed her phone, Vik sliding into her seat to examine the cards closer.
###
Nico hadnât texted or called. Maki had to force herself to stop pacing next to Diaâs crib when she got her tucked in for the night. Dia had been fussy all day, but with no nap, actually fell asleep easily. Maybe a long soak was would be relaxing. Maki turned on the baby monitor, set up candles, dropped a lavender bath bomb, but couldnât get Nico out of her mind. The mood had been so strange. Nico and her mother had obviously been having a private, complicated conversation and Maki couldnât ignore the gut feeling that it was about her.
Maki really liked Nico. And although that morning in Philly had been intense, it hadnât felt rushed. Nico had just made a safe space for them, for Maki to express what she wanted. What she really wanted. And really wanted again and again, which was an unusual feeling for her. The few times sheâd been physically intimate with a potential partner, there had been affection, but no urgency about what next. Not seeing Nico, thinking maybe that this time Nico was the one indifferent, lacking urgency, that actually seemed to hurt. And Maki needed to know that she was guessing wrong about Nicoâs feelings.
Panic stripped away subtext. And she sent the text before she could reread it.
M: Was today too much? Dia just really wanted to see you.
M: So did I. Iâve been looking forward to you being back in Chicago so we could âŚ.
M: But we didnât have to rush into the family thing...with your Mom...I can do casualâŚ
Maki reread what sheâd sent. And dropped her phone on the tray next to the bath. Too much, too clingy...Nico was going to forget Makiâs number and be on the way to her next, non clingy post concert groupie as soon as she couldâŚ
###
Nico stared intently at the screen of her phone, willing Eli to text her that Nozomi was crushed by the weight of guilt and Maki was fine with Nico continuing to court her....court her. Nico raspberried herself...this wasnât courting, this was Nico wanting everything with the hot, fascinating, really into Nico Maki Nishikino...but what if Dia already happened to be theirs? Because of something Nozomi did. That would weird Maki out, make everything strange, and Nico had been sensing Maki leaning toward psyching herself out. Nico had been hoping getting back to Chicago would let Nico get them back on track, but what could Nico say if she saw Maki, without stumbling over Dia.
Makiâs text tone. Eli was weak and hadnât done anything yet, she was probably driving around in circles pyching herself up to talk to Nozomi. And Eli had impressed upon Nico exactly how much grief Makiâs parents' lawyers could make for both of them, making Nico swear not to talk to Maki until Eli did. But Eli was weak⌠And Maki was texting.
M: But we didnât have to rush into the family thing...with your Mom...I can do casualâŚ
Nico had done casual a couple of times. She didnât want it. She wanted the connection she felt when Maki looked at her, the openness, the vulnerability, the trust....and from what little Maki had said about her dating life prior to Nico, Nico guessed that intimacy had led to cooling off, so Maki was probably freaking out âcause Nico had been blowing her off all day. But not because of Maki reasonsâŚ
Nicoâs promise to Eli wasnât as important as Maki. Maki obviously needed emotional aftercare. Nico hit call.
âNico?â
Maki sounded like sheâd been caught mid yawn. It was adorable.
âHi, Maki. Sorry I didnât get back to you about takeout. Had to talk to Eli.â
âIs everything all right, Nico?â Nico heard a splash? Was Maki in the bath? The phone was obviously on speaker.
âNico would like to join you in the bath.â
Maki laughed, it was euphoric, Nico was so hooked, Maki's voice hit Nico in all the good places. âThey used to do that in movies, talk on the phone in their separate bubble baths, put their feet up, show off some leg.â
âNico would love to see that.â
âSo would I.â A little bit shy. Nico was beginning to forget why sheâd been reluctant to call Maki.
âIâm in bedâŚâ
âWhatâd you have for dinner.â
âDidnât.â
âYou sound like me in med school.â
âWhat were you like in med school? Were you buried in books? Or bodies? Dating cute nurses? Would you even have noticed Nico ten years ago?â
âHow could anyone not notice Nico?â
âThatâs what Nico always saysâŚâ Nico seized on an idea, maybe she could actually keep their conversation clear of things that Nico wasnât ready to talk about, âWhat would we have talked about ten years ago?â
âI had this terrible roommate.â
âReally?â
âReally. Wild party animal, had to barricade myself in my room.â Maki sounded more amused than upset.
âYou snuck into the parties, didnât you?â
A pause, what might be towel noises. Nico desperately wanted a video call, âMaybeâŚbut then my grades dropped and I moved back home.â
Keep this vibe going, Nico told herself. âSo what did you do for fun after your brush with the wild side?â
âPiano. And Rin and I played soccer in a league. That was fun.â
âNico bets you looked cute in your uniform.â
Sexy indignation that made Nico want to rip off whatever Maki had covered herself with, â I looked HOT, Nico, I was 22 and in great shape.â
âYouâre still in great shape, Nico knows.â
A giggle, a pause, two people syncing up again.
âWhat were you like ten years ago?â Maki asked softly, her voice a frisson in Nico's ear.
âToo busy for anything. Constantly on tour. Studying finance on the side. I got my economics degree over six years. Magna cum laude.â
âI didnât know that.â
âNico planned to be a success. Now the suits canât say Nico doesnât know how business works.â
âImpressive.â Maki breathed.
âNico strives.â
###
10 p.m. Nozomi was getting worried. Eli was never out this late. Nozomi had let the twins roughhouse past their bedtime because whenever Eli got home, there was going to be a serious conversation. Although the cards had been full of warnings about that, Nozomi knew the truth in her gut before she dealt out the spread.
Key in the door, sigh as Eli closed it behind her. Eli, looking tired, wearing glasses, sheâd been crying. She stopped, clear gaze meeting Nozomiâs.
âIâve hurt my oldest friend, exposed myself to litigation, and could lose my practice. Was that what you meant to happen, Nozomi?â
Nozomi winced.
Eli had her hands shoved in the pockets of her overcoat, âWhat were you thinking?â
âAbout?â
âNozomi.â
âI donât know what youâre talking about, Eli. Has Nico been lying about me?â
Eli glared, her jaw set, nostrils flared. âIf this is how youâre going to behave, Iâll be in the guest room.â
âThat upsets the twins. Canât you just pretend to fall asleep on the couch again?â Nozomi knew this was not the ideal way to react, but with Eli so serious, she found an edge of panic pushing her to impulsive speech.
âNozomiâŚâ Eliâs hands were warm and strong as she held Nozomiâs, âPlease just explain why you altered Nicoâs paperwork.â
âI had a feeling.â
âNico was crying. Makiâs going to be livid.â
Nozomi felt a twinge of guilt, sure, but she also knew that everything would work out. This must be about Dia. Nico and Maki were getting along, that was obvious from Nicoâs texts to Eli. Surely they could sort it out.
âIâd like to say something to Maki that doesnât just sound like my wife played a stupid prank. Please, Nozomi, help me understand.â
Nozomi giggled, âI had a feeling, Eli. The cards had told me there would be a change in Nicoâs fortunes and then I saw her in your officeâŚshe obviously wants a family, Eli, she always has, you told me that. I just want to help the universe give her one. Just let them work it out."
Eli had no reply. When Nozomi doubled down on âthe cardsâ and intuition, there was no opening for Eli to logic her out of her beliefs. And the damnable thing was, it always worked out. But this wasnât their life, this was Nico and Maki and Diaâs. Nozomi had been wrong to meddle. And left Eli terribly vulnerable.
Too exhausted to argue or strategize any more, Eli tossed her coat on the couch. âIâm going to bed. I have to talk to Maki tomorrow.â
âDid you eat?â
Eli shrugged.
âIt will work out, Eli. Have faith."
Eli shook her head, âGood night, love.â
A too quick kiss on the cheek, leaving Nozomi alone, to curl up in Eliâs coat, on a corner of the couch, unpleasantly surprised by Eliâs intransigence. Had she gone too far this time?
###
A long afternoon, Maki finally getting a chance to look at her phone. Message from Raye, Diaâs nanny. Dia fussy and running a fever, over a hundred. Maki bit her lip. That might explain yesterdayâs fit of temper and how easily Dia fell asleep last night.
âDr. Nishikino?â The lab tech came around the corner.
âWhatâs up, Kadir?â
âDo you want to see the results of Mx. Nabeâs bloodwork?â
Maki glanced at her smart watch. Her shift was over twenty minutes ago. And the late dinner with Nico was now probably not going to happen. âLet me check something.â Maki walked confidently to the call board. Tonightâs on call orthopedic surgeon was Dr. Wilhimena Mae Tompkins. Top of the line. Makiâs first or second choice. âJust send them to Dr. Tompkins. The patientâs already been moved to a room, right?â
âOrderlies just took her upstairs.â
âGuess Iâm done here then. Diaâs running a fever so Iâve got one more patient to see.â Maki winked, Kadir grinned.
âSee you in a couple days then, Doc. And I hope Dia feels better.â
âThanks. Iâm sure itâs nothing. Sheâs probably teething.â
Now to text Nico.
###
Nico hadnât heard from Eli all day. Obviously Eli had chickened out. Like Nico expected. Time for a call. Eli picked up.
âAre you hiding from your wife in your office?â
âShut up, Nico.â
âDonât talk to Nico like that. You promised Nico youâd talk to Maki. Have you talked to Maki?â
No reply.
âEli.â
âIâm still working out what to say.â
âStart with, I really didnât mean for my nosy, pushy, annoying hussy of a wife toâŚâ
âDonât talk about Nozomi like that.â
NIco sighed, âCâmon, Eli. Nozomi is currently on the bottom of Nicoâs friend list. Iâm not going to be nice.â
âSheâs my wife, Nico. Itâs complicated.â
âWhat is happening to Nico is complicated. Youâre just not willing to deal with the consequences of your wifeâs intrusive, illegal, apocalyptic meddling. Nico could sue.â
âYes, you could.â Eli sounded so tired, but Nico had zero sympathy for the enabler.
âTalk to Maki or I will.â
âNico.â
End call. Before Nico could put her phone down, Makiâs text tone pinged.
M: Diaâs got a fever. Iâm heading home. We'll have to postpone dinner â︿â
N: Nico will bring dinner over (ăŁËÚĄËĎ)
M: Pizza?
Nico chuckled.
N: Whatever the sexy doctor wants.
M: Pizza á[ á ÚĄ á ]ăââ
M: And you ďźďźž_-ďź
N: Is an hour good?
M: Sure.
N: See both my best girls then.
Nico hit Eliâs number.
âTell Maki.â
âTomorrow.â
âEli.â
âIâm drafting a presentation to explain right now.â
âInclude a big picture of Nozomi with an arrow pointing to guilty.â
âGood night, Nico.â
âTalk to Maki, Eli. Or Nico talks to lawyers.â
Eli seemed more concerned about Nico and the Nishikinoâs lawyers than what Nozomiâs action had cost Nico. Eli continued to fail, freefalling down Nicoâs friend list. Another call. Mama. Nico let that go to voicemail. Maybe she should forward that voicemail and the three before it to Eli. Maybe then Eli would realize some of the pressure Nico was feeling.
###
Nico knocked. Maki was right there, opening the door, in a showcasing all her curves casual combo of black leggings and a mostly undone gray henley. She waved Nico into the wide open family room that seemed to make up at least 70% of the first floor of the carriage house. A baby grand was tucked into a windowed corner, a huge sectional sofa was centered and facing the fireplace, and the walls were decorated with seasonal photos of a shrine and what looked like birds and dragons restored from antique wooden screens. Set a calm, classy mood.
âSo are the Disney movie posters in your bedroom, Cinderella?â Nico bounced up to kiss Maki.
Maki smiled, âI took these photos myself, during some visits to Kyoto and Tokyo, before med school, and the screens are damaged family heirlooms I restored sections of.â
âHands on decorating.â
âI want Dia to grow up with her heritage around her.â
Silent, Nico walked around the sectional, putting the pizza boxes on the wood and glass table, not sure what to say about Dia.
âSheâs feeling better, I think. Her fever went down.â Maki leaned on the sofa back.
âGood.â
âWant to check in on her and say hello before we eat?â
Nico deflected. âPizza first?â
Maki opened the box with Carmenâs excellent stuffed pesto pizza. A garlic smell wafted out with the steam, filling the room, âItâs still hot.â
âNico delivered pizzas for a summer. I know the tricks.â
âNico knows a lot. Let's say good night to Dia.â Maki slid her arm through Nicoâs, stealing a quick kiss and half dragging Nico to the stairs.
###
Diaâs nursery was blue and green and white, with a sea and lighthouse theme. Fish and mammals and turtles played on the walls. In the low light of the nightlight, there was an almost bioluminescent glow to the undersea residents.
âNico is surprised Little Mermaid wasnât a choice when we talked Disney movies.â
âDonât like that oneâŚâ Maki muttered.
âNo, itâd be hard to lose your voice.â
âAnd music.â
âYeah. Nico would hate that.â
They stood at the crib, Nico staring down at Dia, Maki watching Nico, Nico trying not to remember Cotaro in his crib, dark hair, serious face...Dia was relaxed, arms flung out, a tiny smile on her face.
What if they were in their house, standing together, Maki and Nico, both of them, looking at a child theyâd had together after a whirlwind courtship and marriage? What if this were Nicoâs house and when Dia woke up, she looked at Nico, saying âMomma,â and reaching up for a hug? What ifâŚ?
âSheâs beautiful.â Nico whispered and then her breath hitched and sudden water in her eyes stung. She let go of the crib and rushed to the door.
âGood night, Dia. Weâll see you tomorrow.â Maki left the lightest of kisses on her daughterâs forehead, wondering if sheâd seen tears in Nicoâs eyes. But Nico was already downstairs, considering the stuffed pizzas.
âDo you want pesto or sausage? And we need plates. And forks. AndâŚâ
âIâve had stuffed pizza before, Nico. Just give me a minute to find the pie server.â
###
Cocoa had raved about a movie called The Half Of It so Nico suggested they watch that. Maki had recognized it, but said Nico needed to watch Saving Face, director Alice Wuâs first movie, about a doctor and a dancer and their families.
âYouâll love the mom. Sheâs so funny.â
âAnd the main characterâs a doctor? So Nico will find out what doctoring is like?â
âYep.â
The movie progressed; the pizza was eaten, with occasional garlic flavored kisses shared, but Maki kept picking up unease from Nico. Was it lingering from yesterday, the obvious tension between Nico and her mom? Or whatever Nico and Eli had talked about last night? Something obviously had claimed some of Nicoâs attention. But after pizza, Maki had curled up next to Nico, encouraging Nico to drop her arm around Makiâs shoulder. And as the flirting between Wil and Vivian got sexier, kisses and more intimate gestures right there on the screen, building a mood, Maki could feel Nico pull her closer. Maki nudged Nico on the cheek, getting her to turn, tempting her into a luring, longing kiss. Whatever worries had been on Nicoâs mind had been eclipsed, Maki smiling as she felt agile hands slide under her shirt, warm against bare skin, Nico murmuring endearments between kisses and shiver inducing nibbles along Makiâs neck and jaw.
And then Nicoâs phone went off, one of her raps.
âDamn it.â Nico grabbed for her phone, Maki falling down on the couch when Nico let go, âItâs Cocoroâs emergency tone. Sorry.â And all Nicoâs attention was on the call, âWhatâs up? Nicoâs super busy....Yes, Maki and Dia came to the house yesterday. Did Mama tell you?â
Dia? Alert, Maki sat up.
Nico was listening. âWhat did Mama say...why...no, we canât say thatâŚ.Nico wonât letâŚâ
Maki had no idea why Nicoâs sister had anything to say about Dia. Nico had turned away, about to get off the couch, Maki reached over Nicoâs shoulder, pulling the phone away, switching it to speaker.
âWhy are you talking about my daughter?â
âDr. Nishikino?â Cocoroâs voice was tense, âYouâre there? Good, then we can settle what the language should be.â
âWhat language? Why does Nico have anything to do with Dia?â
Nico grunted, it reminded Maki of someone stubbing a toe.
âPictures have been circulating on TWIG of Nico Yazawaâs secret daughter.â
âNico doesnât have a secret daughterâŚâ Maki suddenly realized she was doing all the talking, âNico?â
Nico took her phone back, leaving it on speaker, but switching to the TWIG app. A quick search of â#Nicoâ brought up a snap of Nico hugging Dia in front of her house, Nicoâs mother in the background, Maki nowhere to be seen.
Nico stared. Cocoro continued to panic chatter, âAll we need to do is release a picture of you, Dr. Nishikino, Dr. Nishikinoâs daughter, and the statement that you and Dr. Nishikino are dating and Dia is not your daughter. People are running facial match software and getting confirmation. Next theyâll be wondering who the father isâŚâ
âDia doesn't have a father,â Makiâs fists clenched. No one but Eli was supposed to have any details of her pregnancy with Dia.
âShut up. Both of you.â Nico snapped, the phone dropping to the couch, Nicoâs head dropping into her hands.
âJust tell them Diaâs my daughter.â
Cocoro's tone brightened. âDr. Nishikino is being unexpectedly helpful, Nico. We can get ahead of this.â
âJust release the statement, Cocoro. Nico and I can talk to the press.â A practical solution, Maki decided.
âLet Nico think. Both of you. Just be quiet. Nico needs quiet.â Nico ended the call.
âNico, Dia is my daughter. We can just tell everyone. We donât have to keep us dating a secret. I donât care what my parents think.â Maki sat next to Nico, brushing fingers through Nicoâs hair.
There was a long pause, Nico enjoying Maki's touch. Then she pulled away. âMaki could just marry me. That might save Nico.â Nico sounded like someone hanging onto a building ledge by a ladder made of split fingernails and cruel laughter.
Nicoâs tone and odd behavior scared Maki, âHow can you joke about that, Nico?â
Nico raised her head, tears streaming down her face, âYou donât know this yet, but Nico is a terrible liar.â
âWhat does that mean Nico? Do you have a secret daughterâŚâ
âMakiâŚâ
Makiâs ringtone went off. She glanced at her phone, âItâs Eli.â
Nico dropped her head again, âAnswer it. We might as well blow everything up.â
Maki hit speaker, snarling, âWhat is it, Eli? Want to let me know Dia is Nicoâs daughter too?â
âOh good,â Eli sounded relieved, âNico told you.â
Maki was on her feet, shouting, âNICO TOLD ME WHAT?!!!???!!!â
âAbout her paperwork? And Nozomi? I'm really sorry, Maki.â
Maki felt pale. Her knees wobbled. The room unfocused. Black spots dotting everything. Nico ended the call.
Before Maki could fall, Nico was there, âMaki? Câmon, breathe. Take it slow, breathe for Nico.â
Maki shook off Nico, and ran upstairs to Dia, pulling her out of her crib, holding her tightly, Dia blinking, confused. Nico was there, almost instantly.
âCan we talk?â
âGo away, Nico.â
âMaki. Please.â
âGO AWAY NOW, NICO!â Maki screamed. âLeave us alone.â
Dia started to cry.
Nico stepped back, âCall me later, please, Maki. Or let Eli explain. Iâll have Cocoro tell everyone Diaâs your daughter. Iâm sorry this happened like this." A pause, Nico reaching a hand out, almost touching them. "Itâll be all right, Dia.â
âDonât tell Dia anything.â Maki growled, Dia pressed against her as she glared at Nico, daring her to come any closer.
Retreating into the hall, Nico forced tears back, or sheâd be wailing as loud as Dia. How had this gone so wrong?
A/N: Rainy, moody weather.

MAY PICKS!
WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER MONTH OF TV/MOVIE WATCHING!Â
Does it feel like it was just April or that it canât even be May and yet it is coming to an end? I get it. Quarantine is doing weird things to my head and I canât believe how far in the year itâs been. Looking back on my picks for this month I noticed that I have seemed to escape the world through historical period shows or movies. But that isnât the entire bulk of the month (just half of it). Without further ado, here we go!
As always..spoilers....
THE HALF OF IT
This Netflix original movie was an early watch for me during this month and it came at the right time. I was looking for a movie, rather than a TV show, and something that was contemporary and not overly serious (although, there are serious themes in this film). As it repeatedly says, âitâs not a romanceâ yet it has that YA/teen romance feel. (Yes, I used YA/teen in the same description.) I really loved the Elle Chu and Paul Munsky friendship. While watching the trailer, I could tell this film would be highlighting a healthy friendship as its focal point and how your other half doesnât have to be a romantic soulmate. A lot of times, these kinds of stories can seem very repetitive, but with the new plot of Elle and Paul in love with the same girl we encounter a new kind of obstacle. I think the resolution was pretty solid for both plot lines and I liked the train scene at the end. Certain shots felt long at times. There were lots of pauses, which I didnât 100% like. Also, the awkwardness could feel pretty cringey. Overall, it is definitely worth the watch. I liked it and would watch it again. Paul might be one of my heartthrobs of 2020. Iâm always a sucker for a sweet jock with a heart of gold.Â
THE OFFICE LADIES
Yes, I know Iâm late to the show as this podcast started last year, but better late than never and what better time than quarantine. Plus, I donât have to wait each week for a new episode (even though know Iâm catching up, so eventually...) At first, I was worried when I would have time because of not spending as much time in the car for commuting, but I found itâs really soothing to listen to as Iâm cleaning. It feels like Iâm in the room with Angela and Jenna and weâre all BFFs. I love how theyâre best friends in real life and how close they are. They give the trivia you really can only get from two people who were on the show. They also have several guest stars from actors on the show to writers, directors and producers. One of my most recent listens had Creed Bratton in the studio with them and they talked about the Halloween episode. It was great. Listening to their podcast is really making me want to rewatch the series for the 100th time. As an uber fan, I already get all of their references, but with the new Easter eggs I canât wait to go back and see them. Â
STAR WARS RISE OF SKYWALKER
Not just in honor of May the 4th, but to finish up the Star Wars watch through that I was taking with my sister. I hadnât seen it yet and while not a die heart fan, I still wanted to see the conclusion. I liked the Force Awakens a lot, but felt eh about Last Jedi. In ways this one kind of felt like a stand alone. It had a different vibe compared to the previous two. After watching I heard there was a different director for all three movies, so that makes sense-I guess. (Itâs weird they wouldnât have kept at least one to do two of them.) It also had a kind of fan fiction feel. SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS! Bringing Palpatine back reminded me of Lord Voldemort having a kid in Cursed Child. BACK FROM SPOILERS! Iâm happy that Reyâs parentage/lineage was revealed because it was such a major point in this series. I loved the Rey/Finn/Poe relationship. It was great to see them in the same story line and reminded me of the original three: Luke/Han/Leia. Leia :( It was so sad, but I always knew it had to happen, due to Carrie Fischer. It didnât make it any easier to watch. MORE SPOILERSSSSS! I knew Kylo would turn back. It was nice to see that his mom was able to spark that. I did like his fight scene. I just didnât love the connection him and Rey have/had. LOVED the ending. Iâm cool with her taking the Skywalker name and the suns shot with the force them at the end had me screaming.Â
OPHELIA
From one Daisy Ridley film to another. This movie just recently got added to my list when I was channel surfing. I vaguely remembered it being advertised, but it felt like a while ago. Iâm a sucker for a re-telling, so I was immediately intrigued to watch it. This film was adapted from a novel by the same name. It follows Ophelia from Shakespeareâs Hamlet and gives her more of a story and character development. If you are familiar with the original, you know that Ophelia is only briefly mentioned and her characterâs motives are really driven by her love for Hamlet. Even her famous death scene is very ambiguous. When this film begins, a voice-over narration by Ridley immediately brings us to her death scene and tells the audience âthat there is more to the story than we think we know.â I really loved the twist and re-invention of this story through her point of view. I think Daisy Ridley was fantastic in the role. I havenât seen her in a lot of other things, so it was great to see her here in a completely different role from Star Wars. The re-telling is very creative and very feminist. You get to see how Hamlet and Ophelia meet and then see him off to school. With this addition you can really get behind this relationship and see the mutual attraction and feelings between them. When relating back to the original, I like how they cut out scenes that Ophelia was not physically apart of and instead rely the events that happened. (Specifically with Poloniusâ death.) I also enjoyed the new perspective of scenes. You really can tell that Ophelia is not mad, but it is the mask she must put on to survive. The âget thee to a nunneryâ scene takes on a whole different meaning now. Thereâs also a lot echoes to other Shakespearean plays and tropes which were fun to explore. Whether youâre a Shakespeare/Hamlet fan or not, I would definitely check this one out if youâre a fan of the time period, re-tellings or a strong female lead. Â
MEDICI THE MAGNIFICENT SEASON 3
I literally just finished this show this afternoon and I couldnât wait to write about it. (Sorry if this post is pretty long, but that just shows you that you need to watch it.) I was very excited for the third and final season of Medici because I enjoyed season 2, so much. While this one might have taken me a little longer to watch, it was still a good time and Iâm sad itâs over.Â
Watching this season I was super impressed by Daniel Sharmanâs acting. He has great range as he goes from a young Lorenzo in season 2 to an adult and father and then an elderly man. I think he was convincing throughout each stage and Iâm happy they kept the same actor. His make-up to help him age looked a lot more natural, compared to Richard Maddenâs, in my opinion. I feel on shows like this itâs often hard seeing a jump in time (it helps with seeing the kids grow up), so when Lorenzo starts to get sick/age I at first, was like whoa, but then it was further explained (by inheriting his fatherâs illness, etc.)Â
Compared to season 2, I definitely liked the previous more. I not only enjoyed watching the more idealistic Lorenzo, but also plot-wise. In season 2 the Pazzi are the main antagonist/objective. Here in season 3 there were several obstacles/antagonists: The Pope, Riario, and Savonarola. Every time we thought there was a moment of peace...nope. Now, I get this is based on history and we need drama so you can only change so much, but I missed the Medici being at the top and being respected. I also know we covered A LOT of time. (I guess that shows you how connected I felt with them and the show.)Â
All of the history Easter Eggs were cool. Obviously, the Renaissance was extremely relevant, but it was cool seeing the big names like Botticelli (especially with his painting at the end, which I recognized), Da Vinci, and Michelangelo. I canât get over how many of these famous painters were recognized by the Medici family. It just shows you how important and influential they were. Also, when Nico revealed his last name as Machiavelli. JAW DROP! This show has continually brought me back to researching (and mainly using Wikipedia). The writing at the end was accurate to what I found. Wish we had another season with the legacy to see it continue. Iâm surprised I got teary eyed at the end.Â
WORLD ON FIRE
It may be listed last once again, this month, but it is definitely not least. The show may have finished its season a few weeks ago, but I still have two episodes left on my DVR. The last one I watched was when they were in Dunkirk and that was an intense time. I knew it was going to be, but it still didnât prepare me. In this episode, we see many characters FINALLY meet up and join each otherâs plot lines. I think that was one of my favorite parts of the episode/series. Some already knew each other, while others were meeting for the first time. While I am excited to see how it all turns out, Iâm also not ready to say good-bye. Right now, I saw a potential for a season 2, but not sure if that was a fan made article or not. Iâm hoping all of my favorite characters survive and get what can be considered a happier ending than what they are currently experiencing. I also hope we donât end on too much of a cliffhanger. Either way, Iâm happy I checked this show out.Â
RE-WATCHING
iZOMBIE
Currently Iâm in the beginning of the second season. Sometime last month I felt the pull to start re-watching this show. Itâs one that I have tried once or twice to watch again from the beginning, but now that itâs been finished for almost a year, it felt like time. It was a great decision, although right now thereâs some character plots that are frustrating me and that I forgot about. But thereâs some great brains that Liv has experienced and it was great seeing Lowell again (for as short-lived as it was). Iâm excited to continue re-watching.Â
I DIDNâT DO IT
The re-watch for I Didnât Do It basically began when it hit Disney Plus a few months ago. I just recently made it to season 2, which I remember enjoying more than season 1. One reason for this was because they get rid of the flashback format for each episode. Iâm really early on, like episode 4, so I still have many more to go. Once I finish it I donât know if Iâll explore a new Disney Plus show or watch another that Iâve seen before.Â
I also have a few things on DVR that Iâm still finishing up. I havenât watched the finale of Batwoman yet and I know itâs going to be weird now that Ruby Rose has left the show. I just finished the Flash and felt blah about the whole season, so Iâm unsure if Iâll watch next season. But I am enjoying Stargirl. You can find my thoughts on the first episode here. Iâm excited to see the rest of the season.Â

My Review of Little Witch Academia
Atsuko Kagari (nicknamed Akko) has always had a fascination with witches. Or should I say one particular witch! When she was a child, she saw a magic performance done by a famous witch named Shiny Chariot. After that, Akko decided then and there that she was going to become a witch just like Shiny Chariot. So when she became a teenager, she got the opportunity to enroll at Luna Nova Magical Academy. While this school has primarily been a place for witchâs only to hone on their skills, due to financial issues they opened the school up to non-magic users. And Akko has no magic in her whatsoever!
We follow the antics of Akko as she tries to survive in a witch academy. During her time sheâs managed to snag a wand that was once owned by Shiny Chariot (which she plans to return to), meet friends like Lotte and Sucy, start a rival with the school star Diana Cavendish, get one-on-one training from Professor Ursula (who has her own kind of past), and learn everything there is to know about becoming a great witch. But Akko is going to have a tough time because like I said, she has no magic in her whatsoever! BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: As I mentioned at the beginning, this series is under the thumb of Netflix (in every country). I havenât had the opportunity to check out the subtitled version. As for the dubâŚboy, Erica Mendez is getting the choice roles in Netflix exclusive animes. I canât complain, the lady does fine work. Plus Netflix gives me a chance to hear other new voice actors and seiyuus. Some were big misses with me, but others (like Sucyâs voice) won me over. Hereâs what you might recognize these folks from. JAPANESE CAST: *Akko is played by Megumi Han (known for Yamato on Ore Monogatari, Momiji on Fruits Basket 2019, Kagari on Steins;Gate 0, Rio on YGO Zexal, and Chie on Tokyo Ghoul) *Sucy is played by Michiyo Murase *Lotte is played by Fumiko Orikase (known for Dianthe on Pokemon XY, Kyubei on Gintama, Riza on FMA: Brotherhood, Seras Victoria on Hellsing, Shirley on Code Geass, Rukia on Bleach, and Aki on Inazuma Elven) ENGLISH CAST: *Akko is played by Erica Mendez (known for Ryuko on Kill la Kill, Haruka/Uranus on Sailor Moon redub, Emma on The Promised Neverland, Nico on Love Live, Yuuki on SAO II, Retsuko on Aggretsuko, and Tsubaki on Your Lie in April) *Sucy is played by Rachelle Heger *Lotte is played by Stephanie Sheh (known for Mikuru on Haruhi Suzumiya, Kuro on Blue Exorcist, Nui on Kill la Kill, Hinata on Naruto, Orihime on Bleach, Illiya on Fate/stay night, Yui on K-ON, and Usagi/Sailor Moon on Sailor Moon) FAVORITE CHARACTER: I know in stories like these I always root for the underdog and they end up my favorite characterâŚbuuuuuuutâŚ
I like Sucy! Yeah, I like the little mischevious, mushroom-loving witch. And yes, I love the episode where Akko goes inside Sucy's subconscious and we see all the Sucy's inside Sucy.
DISLIKED CHARACTER: I knew I couldnât really hate Diana! I think most of the hatred I shared at her direction for the majority of the season was because of those two cronies that hung around her. Those two were catty bitches and I just hate those kinds of characters. But nothing could compare to Dianaâs bitch aunt.
God, fuck this woman! She literally tries to usurp Diana from taking over as head of the Cavendish family line. Just so she can give it to one of her bitch daughters! Sheâs seriously giving me Lady Tremaine vibes, itâs not even funny. You know itâs bad that I was rooting for them to die when they got into trouble. But Diana wasnât going to let her bitch aunt and bitch cousins die so I should stop hoping for severe payback. SHIPPING: HmmâŚthe shipping category is going to be fun! I think itâs only because of that one episode that involves a bee sting and the person is smitten with the next person they see. And boy did Akko get her fill when not only Andrew falls for her, but Diana as well!
Actually, I have thoughts of Andrew really taking a shine to Akko. I honestly thought there would only be two interactions at the most between him and Akko during the show. But surprisingly, there were more. Iâm not really a fan of this ship, but I still find it cute. Hell, even Lotte found a boy that was interested in her at one point. She turns him down, but he still holds out hope. Also a cute moment! HmmâŚat the moment Iâm an open multishipper for this series. If Akko ends up with Diana, cool man! If she ends up with Andrew, whatever, I can dig it! If Akko ends up with Amanda, more power to you (and I can totally see that because Amanda is giving me total lesbo-vibes). What do you expect, this is like an all-girls school!
You know what, Iâm now leaning towards Akko x Amanda more than all the others. Donât fight me on this, I just know I like it! ENDING: Up until the halfway point, a lot of the episodes are about Akko trying to make it as a witch. Did she surpass everyoneâs doubts? While Akko was able to improve her magic a bit (I give it 5%), itâs not at the level as many of her classmates. I mean by episode 20, Akko still cannot fly a broom! That should tell you something. But whatâs the one thing that seems to be missing from this series?
An antagonist? Yeah, in comes Professor Croix! And to many of the students, she feels like sheâs able to bring witchcraft into todayâs era with her technology driven methods. And Akko certainly has taken a shine to her. However, Professor Ursula can smell this womanâs bullshit a mile away. Ursula was once the classmate of Croix. But back then Ursula was known as⌠Oh come on, it was so bloody obvious the moment Ursula met Akko.
Ursula is really Shiny Chariot! Meanwhile, Akko ends up trying to speak these seven secret words thatâll unlock the wand she obtained in the first episode. You know, the wand that belonged to Shiny Chariot?! And Akko has managed to obtain six out of the seven secret words. She could be the one to get the seventh word, which was something Chariot was unable to do as a student. But this positivity ends with a looming war (over a soccer match) on the rise. In actuality, thereâs a force around the town as well as certain moments at the school that have caused chaos. Yes, itâs Professor Croix exploiting peopleâs anger for her own research. Not only that, but she used Akko for her own selfish ambitions and as a result ended up injuring Shiny Chariot to a point of altering her magic (possibly permanently). Thatâs one thing. Then we get quite a big bombshell!
AKKOâS MAGIC: Ever wonder why Akko has like zero magic ability?! When she saw Shiny Chariotâs performance as a child, her dreams and potential magic were taken by Chariot in order to make her performances more magical (due to audience members becoming disinterested in Chariotâs magic). Akkoâs magic was taken away from her before she could even realize a thing. Damn! And you can just imagine Akkoâs heartache finding out that her professor was really Chariot and that Chariot did that to not just Akko, but other children! After Chariot found out what her magic shows were doing, she immediately fell off the map.
BACK TO THE CONCLUSION: One of Croixâs inventions went rogue and is officially threatening the world. And itâs up to Akko, Sucy, Lotte, Diana, Amanda, Constance, and Jasminka to catch up to this rogue missile invention. Now that Akko was able to obtain the seventh word, thereâs a good chance they can take out Croixâs out of control missile. Croix thankfully realized the errors of her way and understood the pain sheâs caused to her students and her former classmate. Croix and Chariot decide to give their all to help the girls as well. While five of the seven girls were able to give a big boost, it was Akko and Diana who took out the looming threat. Thatâs right, witches saved the world! Yeah, during the series a lot of people were kinda mean to or looked down upon Luna Nova and the witch race in general. Especially, those dickheads at Andrewâs prep school! With this act, Iâm sure Luna Nova and the witches will finally get the respect they deserve. In the aftermath, yes Luna Nova is now receiving more respect from those that have been quite cruel to them throughout the series run. Croix is going away to do some research. One of her biggest plans was to restore Ursula/Chariotâs magic that was lost due to her own recklessness with Akko. The students go back to their lessons andâŚ
Akko (after 25 episodes) was able to float a few inches off the ground using her broom. She flewâŚsort of. Iâll let it count as a victory! THE TWO SPECIALS: A few years prior to the television series run, Little Witch Academia had two movies air. Now this is a different telling of the story. In the first special (which is 25 minutes), it has Akko come upon Chariotâs rod during a class assignment (instead of coming upon it in a forest like the first episode).
And hereâs a real kicker, while Akko is still the class screw-up and has the least amount of magic, here she actually has SOME magic. In the second special (which is 55 minutes), Akko ends up in trouble (like normal) and ends up having to do a punishment assignment. She has to help orchestrate a ritual which ends up turning into a parade. So Akko, Sucy, Lotte, Amanda, Constance, and Jasminka all end up working together to do this. But Akko wants to turn this into something for people to remember and always cherish. Like her experiences with the Shiny Chariot performances she saw as a child! But thereâs always blow-back because at Luna Nova, Shiny Chariot is seen as a disgrace to traditional witches. And of course there was bound to be some disagreements when working with a big group. And despite a few hiccups, everyone was able to come together to put on a convincing parade for the crowd. Little Witch Academia was quite the enjoyable little story. Yes, itâs a root for the underdog kind of story and even though the television series seems to give Akko the short-end of the stick on the magic matter, itâs full-filling to see her accomplish quite a bit. Even if it took her until the final seconds to learn how to fly! I know itâs been about 2-3 years since the ending of the TV series and am wondering if this is it for the franchise. I know there are novels and games out for this, so maybe one day.
But I do give a recommendation for those into witches, magic, and all that good stuff! It's full of fun characters, there's no harm in that. Currently, Netflix is the only outlet for this series (in just about every country). But Netflix does carry both the sub and dub (and several other languages). Now then, whatâs my next Amazon/Netflix exclusive anime? Nope. Youâre watching this.
Rising of the Shield Hero? But isnât that Crunchyroll or FUNimation? Donât care. Youâre watching this now. But I have a big list of other animes to wat⌠Tough shit. Youâre watching this. You have no choice but to watch a modern Isekai!

TimothĂŠe Chalamet, Steve Carell, and Director Felix van Groeningen Discuss Addiction and Fatherhood
In âBeautiful Boy,â the trio brings to life the true story of a father coping with his sonâs addictionâand reckoning with the limits of paternal love
By Thomas GebremedhinOct. 3, 2018 10:17 a.m. ET
ON A QUIET stretch of beach in Northern California, a father takes his son surfing. Bodies flat against their boards, they paddle away from shore. As the waves grow bigger the boy, forging ahead on his own, disappears behind a curtain of water. Then, just as the father begins to panic, the boy emerges, triumphant, riding a wave back to him.
The scene, which arrives early in Belgian director Felix van Groeningenâs English-language debut, Beautiful Boyâco-written with Luke Daviesâcasts a long shadow over the rest of the film. Adapted from a pair of best-selling memoirs by a father and son, David and Nic Sheff, the story recounts the painful transformation of one family grappling with drug addiction. David, a well-meaning journalist played by Steve Carell, has always been close to his son Nic (TimothĂŠe Chalamet), but as Nic begins experimenting with drugs, eventually spiraling into a full-blown addiction to crystal meth, David is forced to question just how well he knows his boy, where he went wrong and how he can get him back.
Beautiful Boyâproduced by Plan B Entertainment (Moonlight, 12 Years a Slave) and shot over 40 days in Los Angeles and San Franciscoâhas a nonlinear structure, with devastating episodes that reveal the extent of Nicâs dependency (âIt takes the world from black-and-white to Technicolor , â he says of crystal meth) played against sweeter moments between father and son. The film comes as drug addiction remains a national pandemic, but while it poignantly humanizes a difficult issue, itâs not on a mission. Its appeal lies in more universal preoccupations: what it means to be a family, the conflicting impulses in any parent to both protect their children and set them free, and the search for wholeness and identity.
Last month, van Groeningen, Carell and Chalamet reunited for the filmâs premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and for their first group interview about the project. The mood in the room was playful and tender as everyone greeted each other with hugs. While they sat for their portraits, fiery R&B tracks floated down from a sound system; at times, struggling to sustain serious, camera-ready expressions, the trio burst into fits of laughter. Were there similar moments of levity on the set of Beautiful Boy, despite the grave subject matter?
âOh, sure,â Carell says. âWe wanted to honor the material, but we actually had a lot of fun, too. Because thatâs part of life. Even within the darkest moments.â
Thomas Gebremedhin: This is a heartbreaking movie. How do you prepare for something like this?
Felix van Groeningen: Iâve touched on the subject [drugs] in my other films, but in a very different way. So I went to Al-Anon and AA meetings. I visited rehab centers. But, obviously, David and Nic were the biggest source of information for me. Getting the details felt important, and so my bibles were the memoirs.
Steve Carell: Being a father really gave context to my approach. Specifically, my love for my own children gave context to how I was approaching this guy, which isnât too far from how I would imagine trying to navigate this experience if it was something that fell into my life. A week before we started shooting, my son, who was 11 or 12 at the time, out of the blue asked whether marijuana is a gateway drug. This was on the way home from school; itâs clearly something that theyâd been discussing. Weâd had vague conversations about the dangers of drugs, but not a more adult conversation about it. Itâs terrifying on even such a simple level having that discussion. I didnât want to make a wrong turn. I assume David went through many of the same things, wanting to do everything right but realizing there is no right or wrong path.
TimothĂŠe Chalamet: For me, the first thing to pull from is the experience of being a son, a son in a family, and having a great relationship with my father. There is a recognizable physical context to that. From a hundred feet away you can tell by the way people hug whether theyâre family.
TG: I want to touch on that father-son dynamic. The chemistry between you two is so apparent in the film. How do you create that connection off-camera?
SC: I donât think you do. I donât think itâs something you consciously generate. I donât want to speak for Timmy, but we immediately liked each other. We immediately felt a connection. I never felt there was an acting exercise that we were using to try to feel more connected. In TimothĂŠe I saw an incredible, soulful, generous person. I liked him enormously from day one. And since Iâm exactly the same kind of person, I expected him to feel the same about me. [Laughter] But it was very natural.
TC: I feel so immensely filled with gratitude that I have Steve and Felix and other people that Iâve been able to work with at a young age that have been, I donât want to say paternal towards me, but itâs a form of that, and IâŚ. [Felix gets up to pour himself water] As heâs leaving!
SC: [Laughing] Felix doesnât feel the same way.
FVG: I was so happy we took two weeks to rehearse. I always do it. It gave us time to know each other. I was very nervous in the beginning, and it gave me time to calm down and to be myself. English isnât my first language and, I mean, Iâm working with movie stars! I needed that time. But as Steve said, it wasnât like we were artificially getting there.
TC: I was very soothed by Steveâs warmth and kindnessâ
SC: Keep going.
TC: But really, I was and am a huge admirer of Steveâs work, and I knew this was going to be a bridge for me to cross. It was good for me to realize upfront, OK, thatâs going to be a hurdle, especially [since weâre playing] father and son. I needed to get it out of my head.
TG: What were the most challenging scenes for you to film?
TC: I found the sequences on the phone challenging. Itâs the nature of the movie that those phone calls are emotional climaxes. And generally, as an exercise, phone calls are challenging as an actor because you donât typically have the other person there with you. So I was very grateful that each time there was something on the phone, whether it was Andre Royo [who plays Nicâs AA sponsor, Spencer] or Steve, we were always there for each other.
SC: For me, it was when the character of David makes choices that would be difficult for me, or any father, to make. Thereâs a sticking point in your subconscious, maybe, about how you would handle a situation. By his own admission, David makes tough choices, and sometimes as an actor, or just a human being, you evaluate what those choices are. Sometimes they conflicted with what I imagined I would do, but ultimately I realized itâs probably what I would do. Making that shift was interesting to me.
TG: Right, there are several forks in the road for both David and Nic throughout the movie, but the scene that felt critical to me is when David has to establish some kind of boundary with Nic.
SC: It was a terrifying scene. A moment any parent would dread. Itâs hard to even imagine getting to that point, where you have to make that kind of choice while still desperately loving your child. The whole thing is terrifying and tragic and common. Thatâs the other thingâevery day while we were shooting this, if any of us mentioned to other people what we were working on, the stories and personal connections were a bit overwhelming.
TG: Well, last year was the deadliest on record for overdoses.
TC: Yeah, more than car crashes.
TG: This isnât a preachy film, but how do you hope it will play a part in that discussion?
FVG: I think itâs about giving people a face and a voice. I hope this film gives insight into how complex [addiction] is. A lot of movies touch upon it from just one side. But thereâs something unique about [Beautiful Boy]. Itâs two points of view of the same story.
TG: When you went back home to your families after a day on set, were you able to leave work at work?
TC: Certainly in any film, whether itâs your relationship to the characters or people or the context of environments, it naturally blends with your experience. It would be dramatic to say that there was no escaping it, and yet we were in itâwe shot for 40 days or something, and I just kept thinking, Keep moving, keep going.
SC: This one was hard to leave on set. Every night I came home and hugged my kids a little tighter. My wife and I would talk every night about what we shot that day and how it felt and just the vibe. It didnât feel like a job. We had to be invested in this because, beyond the fact that itâs a harrowing and relevant story, itâs true. These are real people. I definitely brought it home.
TG: On a lighter topic, thereâs the filmâs soundtrack: Nirvana, Neil Young, Fiddler on the Roof. Itâs all over the place. Felix, how does music inform the story? And Steve and TimothĂŠe, as actors, how did you use music to creatively build out these roles?
FVG: The idea came from the books. Music was so important to David and Nic. Thereâs something beautiful about how it unites them. David mentions in his book a lot of songs that he canât listen to anymore. So we put some of those songs in the movie. At some point my editor [Nico Leunen] and I wanted to use a classic film score together with songs, but then [Leunen] came up with the idea to drop the score and just use the songs. It made us take a risk.
SC: Itâs a language that David and Nic used to speak to each other. As the addiction sets in, their relationship becomes frayed and that language does as well. Music is Davidâs bread and butter; these are the people he interviews. And he incorporates his son into that world at an early ageâitâs both of their worlds.
â This one was hard to leave on set. Every night I came home and hugged my kids a little tighter. â
TC: Yeah, music was a big part to Nicâs character. I remember we were shooting on the campus of USC, and we got into trouble because my portable speaker was playing âHeart-Shaped Boxâ too loudly. For Nic it was Nirvana; I was listening to Eminem when I was 5 or 6 years old, and it did feel important. Itâs an effect of growing up in America, or the world, in a digital, consumerist age, that youâre communicated these messages of self-destruction and alienation.
TG: TimothĂŠe, youâve played coming-of-age roles before, most notably as Elio in Call Me By Your Name. Elio is different from Nic, but theyâre also both struggling with their identity. Did you take anything from that role and put it into this one?
TC: Thatâs a really good question. If thereâs a through line itâs the immediacy and the urgency, the moment-to-moment visceral nature of what it is to be young. For Elio thatâs a life circumstance that all of us should be so fortunate to go through, to fall in love, but also heâs coming to terms with his sexuality. For Nic, itâs facing this goliath of an obstacle, not only addiction but to one of the most powerful substances known to man.
TG: Did David and Nic give you all any advice?
SC: I didnât meet Nic until we were shooting, but I met with David. He couldnât have been more gracious. I think [heâs] very brave to even allow this movie to be made. Thereâs an incredible trust that he put into Felix and everyone involved that weâd get it at least marginally right. But he took a very hands-off approach with me.
TC: I went out with Nic and [his sister] Daisy to eat, and it was just as Steve said, the greatest gift I got from Nic was the confidence to be Nic. I felt an understanding. I think they understood our biggest goal and mission was to get their story right.
Felix van Groeningen PHOTO: MARK PECKMEZIAN FOR WSJ. MAGAZINE; STYLING BY EMMA WYMAN
FVG: But just in the authenticity and in the heart of itâwe didnât have an obligation to it. Itâs not a biopic in that sense, and thatâs an advantage, I guess.
TG: Steve, youâre also playing Donald Rumsfeld in Backseat and Mark Hogancamp in Marwenâwhatâs different about playing a real, living person as opposed to a fictional character?
SC: A fictional character leaves much more to the imagination in terms of the performance and development and backstory. One is complete invention, and the other is completely tethered to the real world. Itâs not easier or harder to portray either. Iâm really excited that David and Nic [are attending the premiere]. From time to time I would talk to David and ask, âHow surreal does this feel to you?â There was one day we were doing a scene on the beach, and David and [his wife] Karen [Barbour] came to visit. It was a simple scene, nothing overly dramatic, but David was elated. He was so full of emotion. I could tell that it really hit him.
TG: What do you ultimately hope this movie communicates? What do you think the lasting impression will be?
FVG: Itâs a harrowing story, but itâs a beautiful family. To see all of this happen in a family where thereâs so much love and understanding makes it even more harrowing, maybe, but itâs a family that believes in unconditional love, and they use that as a way out.
TG: Thatâs a great note to end on. I do have one last question though, unrelated to the movie. TimothĂŠe, have you seen the Instagram account @chalametinart?
TC: Yes! [Laughs]
FVG: What is that?
TG: Itâs an Instagram account where they photoshop TimothĂŠe into classic paintings.
FVG: Oh, yeah! Wasnât there an account about just his hair, too?
SC: [Looking at @chalametinart on a phone] Oh, itâs beautiful. [To TimothĂŠe] Well, you have your selection of Christmas cards now. â˘

BECAUSE IâM NOT POPULAR, IâLL READ WATAMOTE: CHAPTER #141
The first half of Golden Week is over, and Tomoko has found herself the object of âplatonic" affection for four different suitors. And as our intrepid heroine muses over the which of them to pursue, out of nowhere comes the dark horse. Once thought to be missing in action, this little girl, having been there since the very beginning, threatens to overtake the competition in one psychotic swoop.Â
Chapter 141: Because Iâm Not Popular, Iâll Go to School with Kii-chan
The things that Stuffed Yuu-chan and Pals have seen...
Ah, the classic Introvert Burnout. I had a feeling Tomoko would be drained after having what may have been the most socially stressful time of her life. Not simply for being social, but for how much she had to navigate as a fish out of water. Each âdateâ involved a new experience for Tomoko to address, and that much effort at once can be really exhausting for a layabout like her.
That my friend is what we in the TvTropes community call, âTempting Fateâ.
Heeeeeereâs Kii-chan!
Canât even begin to tell you how much I love this entrance. We all know who Kii-chan is. But even those outside of the loop would get a feel for who she is. Adorable and sweet-natured, but disturbing due to an apparent lack of negative emotions (even when appropriate). Ah, Kii-chan, itâs been far too long.Â
Nothing to say here, really. Just think itâs a particularly lovely picture of Tomoko.Â
Because the popularity of a manga series is largely dependent on real-time reception, itâs very common for mangakas to add new, âpopularâ characters, or give the spotlight to characters whoâve been out of focus. Watamote is no exception. It may seem contrived to bring Kii-chan back after being gone for a while, but it works here because it relies on Kii-chanâs character to it, instead of a series of implausible plot developments. Kii-chan is just considerate of her cousinâs scheduleâthatâs all we need.
The first hint of Tomokoâs reawakening as the role model onee-chan.Â
One of the perks of being a sporadically-appearing character is that you can really see just much the art style has evolved since the characterâs last appearance. For Kii-chan, she hasnât really changed much design-wise other than being a little taller. But even then, the linework is much cleaner and consistent this time around, which compliments the more âeveryday slice-of-lifeâ approach Watamoteâs been embracing.Â
If only she could grow a nose. Â
The best thing about this type of censorship is that you donât necessarily have to understand what's being censored. All you really need is a bit of context to put the pieces together. The outlines are detailed enough that we can see the characters as some kind of humanoids with animal features. And given what we know about Kii-chan, it makes perfect sense. Â
Y-Yeah, I...Iâve totally heard of that show.
Other than the whole Ucchi situation (which is slowly becoming an unintentional blessing), this is the last of the misunderstandings that still needs resolving. Itâll be hard, though, since this particular issue isnât that troublesome. For now...
Look at that platonic sibling bonding.
Perhaps Iâve been conditioned by manga/anime, but I find it refreshing how Watamote has managed to develop the Kuroki siblingsâ relationship while avoiding any incestual subtext. Lots of series oversell the sibling relationship by having them be overly affectionate and clingy. With Watamote, their bond feels organic because they donât have to be touchy-feely. An unspoken quality time is all there is to it.
Itâs hard to get a read on Tomokoâs emotions here, but at the very least, she seems troubled. It could very well be that Tomoko just realized that sheâs changing in regards to the media she consumes. The former her wouldâve probably jumped on the Kemono Friends bandwagon, but the reality is, Tomokoâs otaku interests are being compromised by the mainstream, at least as mainstream as rap battles get.Â
But the kicker is...she realizes this change isnât all that bad.
Of course, nothing beats watching anime with your psychotic cousin.Â
The whole âpet-sittingâ relationship they have here is a tricky one since each side is trying to accommodate the other based on âflawsâ that donât exist (or no longer exist). This usually results in an endless cycle of misunderstandings that lead to nowhere, but this confusion has transcended that cycle to develop into a progression of sorts. Similar to the Ucchi situation, the absurdity became so frequent that it just became reality. One that each side has been influenced greatly from.
With her constantly adorable face, you forget that Kii-chan is a middle-schooler and is therefore old enough to know about things like sex and perversion. Like Yuu-chan, she may look innocent, and while she was aware of such things as a kid, she didnât really get it until they approached high-school age. Â
You know, I read this really good manga called Kaguya-sama: Love is War (shameless plug, I know), and they actually had a chapter about a rap battle a while back. Given that both series tend to be up-to-date on contemporary trends, it makes me wonder...has rap suddenly become a hot thing in Japan? Or has it always had its niche audience?
Iâm sure many fans knew that this was going to be an inevitable development whenever Kii-chan showed up again. Unlike Tomokoâs school friends, Kii-chan wasnât there to see the slow, gradual growth of Tomokoâs character, so it must have hit her like a ton of bricks to see her precious onee-chan go from helpless loner to mature teen in the blink of an eye.Â
Sometimes I wonder just how pitiful Kii-chan thought Tomoko really was...
Why would you censor Disneyland now of all times?
Those of us who were clamoring to get close-ups of the photos taken in the Disneyland arc finally get their wish.
The Kowarith photo is my favorite, even though two-thirds of the people in it are faking their asses off. While that may be my personal bias towards the Tomoko-Yoshida-Yuri trio, I think it reflects a better sense of kinship between the girls. The effort is there, phony as it is, to support each other in an awkward situation, which is fundamentally what the series is all about.
The assumedly Fireworks photo is also pleasing, make no mistake. You can definitely feel more genuine emotions (or lack thereof) being expressed than in the other photo. But this focuses more on the individual than how they work as a collective group, despite there being more people. The girls ultimately look like six different colored Skittlesâpart of the same package, but each unique. Â Â
Could this be the start of Kii-chan revitalizing her perception of Tomoko as a super popular girl? I sure hope so.
How ironic. Kii-chanâs perspective of Tomoko is starting to grow ever so gradually on the upside, whereas Tomokoâs perspective of Kii-chan grows more and more negative.
Hang on, is that supposed to be some fake Dragonite shirt? Neat.
At this point, people assuming that Yoshida as some kind of punk based on her looks is a dead horse of an issue. Some stereotypes exist for a reason, I suppose.
I see your game, Nico Tanigawa, using a deliberately vague line about âtwo girlsâ to make your readers overanalyze a single panel. All I have to say to that is that I am completely and utterly guilty.
One of the girls is probably Yuri, if only because sheâs the only girl to appear in both photos. As for the second girl, your guess is as good as mine. Iâm inclined to say Ucchi because if Kii-chan only has their appearances to go on, then Ucchi and her emoji-face make quite the impression. Â
Iâm getting Yuu-chan vibes here with the way Kii-chan phrases half-insults with a friendly demeanor.Â
+ 1 TO THE HAREM.
Kii-chan is definitely that relative you leave a self-imposed boundary on. Fine in small doses, like at parties and family gatherings, but long-term exposure is unhealthy for the brain. This isnât even a wholly exaggerated fantasy on Tomokoâs part. Okay, the eating bit is a little much, but given that Kii-chan allegedly dreams about treating Tomoko like a pet, the latter is right to be a little concerned.
There needs to be an AU one-shot of Tomoko, Tomoki, and Kii all going to the same school at the same time. Right. Now.Â
I do appreciate that despite Kii-chanâs deteriorating sanity, Tomoko doesnât view her as a lost cause and even tries to put a positive spin on it. Reconciliation Arc is a-go!Â
Did Kii-chan really have that big of a growth spurt, or has Tomoko just reached her peak in height? Not sure how far the genetics will go, but Kii-chan becoming taller than Tomoko is only going to make her even more intimidating.Â
This little scheme of hers is definitely reflective of the âoldâ Tomoko, but thereâs a nice reversal going on here. Instead of Tomoko trying to make things sound cooler than they actually are, sheâs trying to make things seem worse. Of course, Murphyâs Tomokoâs Law states that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Especially if Tomoko wants it to go right.Â
Ah, Ogino. The only character whose relationship with Tomoko has remained relatively unchanged despite indirectly having the most impact on Tomokoâs life.
Better update her Wiki page now.Â
Itâs pretty telling how itâs these two who cause Tomoko the most grief. Itâs not the delinquent who routinely bashes her face in, not the pervert(s) lusting after her little brother, and not the otaku who passive-aggressively teases her. As for why, I think it boils down to the fact that Ogino and Kii-chan challenge her comfort zone the most. It also doesnât help that Tomoko doesnât interact with them as often as the others, so she hasnât really had the time to get desensitized by them.
This freakinâ teacher, man.
The second worst part of Oginoâs âhelpâ is that she never actually lies. Sure, she exaggerates to hell and back, but itâs always loosely based in reality, like some cheap movie adaptation of a best-selling novel.Â
But the worst part of it is...you canât hate Ogino for it. Her personal assessment may be founded on largely suspect reasons, but itâs still an honest assessment. I have no doubts that Ogino really is proud of Tomoko, and thatâs exactly why sheâs the best worst teacher.
Thatâs true. If Ogino gave that spiel to people like Hijirisawa or Hatsushibaâyâknow, people who donât know her as wellâthey might actually buy that crap. But people who know Tomoko like Yuri or Nemo, people like us, can tell that Oginoâs sugarcoating the whole thing. Kii-chan, with her terrifying skill for knowing too much, is no exception. Â
Ah, I see. This is one of those put-all-the-secondary-characters-who-we-havenât-seen-in-a-while-into-one-chapter chapters.Â
Canât complain, though. I like Itou.Â
âOr somethingâ can also be translated as âlust after Tomokiâ.Â
We donât really have much to go on for how Itou views Tomoko, but I think itâs reasonable to think that she may not see her in that good of a light. Not only did Tomoko give off a weird impression when she played off the whole fist bump thing, but Itouâs âpowers of perceptionâ probably made her aware of Tomoko and Komiyamaâs frenemy-ship, hence her âwarningâ that Komiyama was around.
The Inherent Awkwardness of Second-hand Relationships: The Life of Tomoko.
Betchaâ no one saw this interaction coming. Whether itâll lead to anything more remains to be seen. Itouâs still got the whole âfriendship potentialâ going on with Futaki, but given that she has the tolerance to BFF Komiyama, I see no reason why she canât befriend a psycho like Kii-chan.Â
That desire to âloudly blowâ is Kii-chanâs inner demons screeching out in desperation for release. I pity the fool who unleashes the beast.
That does sound like your typical amateur definition of a psychopath, doesnât it?
For the record, I donât actually believe Kii-chan is a psychopath, despite the jokes I made. There are way too many moments that discredit such a claim. Now, if you were to accuse Kii-chan as being some sort of deviant (sexual or otherwise) I might see that. But ultimately, I think Kii-chan was just a victim of having her innocence shattered too fast and too soon, which made her more, uh, crafty than Tomoko could handle.Â
Man, itâs been a long time while since we last saw Dicky-chan, hasnât it? Hope we get to see more of her (and Sayaka, for that matter) after this chapter.
I love how even when sheâs collecting masturbation material, Komiyama has to hold her camera phone all lady-like. If the term âpurevertâ ever needed a concrete definition, this girl would be it.
Main Character privileges, thatâs why.Â
Get. The. FUCK. Out. Of. Here.
With each subsequent appearance, Komiyamaâs standard for what constitutes a bitch primed to steal away her Tomoki-kun falls hilariously lower. Itâs not enough that a girl in their class makes two seconds of eye contact with him, nosiree. Any girl with an inkling of a relationship with Tomoko is not immune, even if itâs his own damn cousin. Granted, I donât think Komiyama would be so pathetically scummy as to confront Kii-chan about it like she did to Yoshida.
...I hope.
âBest friendsâ may be stretching it now that weâve gotten this far in the series. However, there is one aspect of Tomoko and Komiyamaâs relationship that triumphs over all the others:
Absolute candidness. Even now, the only one who gets to see the complete, raw package that is Tomoko Kuroki is Komi-something. While Tomoko has made substantial friendships with the likes of Yuri, Nemo, and Katou, Tomoko still restrains herself just a tad lest she pushes them away. Itâs only with Komi that Tomoko bears her full ugliness, which I think has developed into some freakish level of respect/understanding that none of the others can claim.
Damn, even the bishounen dude gets to make an appearance. All we need know is Lethal Chef Girl to make a cameo and Iâm set.Â
Nope. Any game is an away game when your âharemâ shows up to cheer you on.
A few people have expressed discontent with how the chapter seems to end so abruptly, and itâs a fair criticism. It may be the lack of a âNext time...â tagline throwing people off, but while this chapter indeed ends at an odd point, itâs not that unprecedented. Some of the previous chapters ended this way, like that time Komi was all âOi!â at Yoshida at the cafeteria, which indicates that this chapter is likely one of those series-of-vignettes that also doubles as a build-up chapter.Â
On a positive note, while the chapter does feel prematurely ended, how the next chapter plays out if it is connected to this one is sure to be a surprise.Â

â¨âď¸ my heart & soul are so full.
This was truly the best experience of my life. Envision is something else. I danced and sweat out every negative energy that I had stored away before I came here. I feel like a new person..
đ I loved the whole vibe of the Uvita area. Everyone was so nice. I've missed the salty air in my hair and on my lips. Being surrounded by the jungle and the ocean is a euphoric feeling. đ I ate a lot of good fish outside the festival and I am definitely missing it. I loved the fresh fruits and coconuts everywhere đĽĽđ´đđđ
đď¸ our air b&b was just a couple minutes away from the festival and our host Jose was the nicest human ever. He was constantly making sure everything was perfect for us and coming back to get sleep in the ac was prime. I'm very glad we did that. Cabinas yuriel đđâ¤ď¸âď¸
đł we went on a whale watching tour and we're blessed to see a male and a mama and her baby playing around! Humpback whales are my flavorite animal and I haven't seen them since I was in Hawaii so it was an epic treat.
đThen Dan and I watched our last Costa Rican sunset for the trip and took a nice stroll home. On the way we saw a sloth in the tree, a crazy poisonous snake and a gnarly looking centipede. đđ
I have fallen in love with envision and everything it stands for and for the beautiful country of Costa Rica. I will be back there's no doubt about that. I want to explore everything. Thankful for this trip and all the lessons learned and friends I met along the way. Until next time đĽĽâ¨ Pura Vida â¨đĽĽ
⨠Top Envision Moments & Music â¨
đĽ the sunset and fire spinners on the beach with the drum circle. I had hoped to spin some fire down there but I'll be a little more prepared next time.. you walk up the path onto the beach and you are met with various vendors with cool bones and jewelery, cheap beer and food as you emerge into a sea of people on the sand. The sky was on fire and the vibes were hiiiigh. The drum circle was tribal and euphoric. Looking around me being surrounded by jungle and ocean and beautiful people was straight bliss.
â˘
đ seeing Paul staments talk about mushrooms. I only caught one but it was so cool to hear him share his stories and experiences with us.
â˘
đ˝ď¸đŚthe dishcoteque
The waste at this festival was pretty much non existent. It always makes me sad how people can leave a place so destroyed and covered in trash. I had to pick up no trash from the ground and all the volunteers who were picking up trash barely had anything in their buckets. When you got food at any vendor here you received an actual dish, bowl, silverware or cup. When you were done you'd bring it to the "dishcoteque" and recieve a voucher for your next one. No plastic at all barely any paper products besides some paper straws .. the bathrooms also did not have toilet paper in them.. you had to get it from the outside and bring it with you so they were not overflowing with paper and and overuse of products.
â˘
â¨đ¨â¨ the art & the stages
There was so much phenomenal art. I was blown away by the murals everywhere and the art gallery was bursting with talent and creative energy.
The bars and booths were all made from the materials surrounding them. Everything was made from the earth. The Sol stage was surrounded by a beautiful design with a big screen in the back that had really awesome visuals on it
The lapa stage was filled with house n deep techno vibes all day and night. It felt like something out of an epic movie in there with all the mist and the lights. The entrance to the beach was right there too. It was a great place to go to just dance and chill out. And finally... The Luna stage. W o w. The most incredible stage I've EVER seen in my life and I've seen quite a few cool stage setups. It was a huge tower of Earth and wood and vines and beauty. There was a portal where people danced behind. The lighting was a1 from the lasers to the mapping on the funktions. It was truly other worldly there. I will be riding the high of that stage for a long time. There was water refill stations in all the right spots which made staying hydrated in the jungle heat so easy.
â˘
đŽđđŚđĽđĽ the food
It's usually hard for me to eat at festivals lately because I don't eat meat anymore. Chicken fingers was always a go to for me but I've sadly become very picky. Everyone was pretty accommodating to my needs ( I wish I thought about asking for no cilantro before the last day đ I hate that shit )and everything was so nourishing and healthy. I have not been eating well lately and I feel so nice and full after all the smoothies and juicy goodness I ingested over the weekend.
â˘
đˇď¸ the huge tarantula like spider that happened to wander through the crowd of people dancing with the bass vibrating the floor and onto our blanket. It was SO BIG how did you even make it through the crowd?! Stealthy dude. That was wild.
â˘
âđľThe tea party!
I went to the bathroom and I came across a tiny but huge tea party. Everyone had tea cups along a very small rectangle table/stool and they were singing jungle tea time jungle tea time and cheersing to life it was so cute
â˘
đđ¤¸ââď¸đĽđ the performers...
Wow. I haven't seen performances like that ever. Every collective blew my mind they all had a vibe of their own and absolutely slayed it on stage. Serious inspiration
â˘
đśđ the music
Every set was so good. Nothing was like oh that was cool .. everything i was was so we'll put together and everyone definitely out out jungle vibes.
â˘
I'll just put this first in case you don't want to read all the way cause this was my flavorite part đ
đ˝ Tipper đ˝
This was my 30th show.. in the jungle...and the Luna stage couldn't have been any better. He played so many fat unreleased tracks and vips I have never heard before. Serious deep jungle vibes. I can honestly say that was my flave set I've seen by him so far. There were no visuals but I was so okay with that. the lights were so on point and the performers were so freaking good and well paired with what he was putting out. I am sooooo freaking thankful for that experience and to have had it with all my tipper family. This community has Brought me all over the country and now out of the US. I am constantly overstimulated and it's just getting more intense as I get older so traveling can be difficult for me. The high energy if the airport is a lot for me. Music festivals are even a lot for me but I eventually get comfortable..I just love the epic moments of euphoria through music and these experiences that I'll push myself through the rest of it. The way tippers music makes me feel is so worth trooping through a sea of energies to get to that moment. It's truly beautiful for me and I know others feel the same. Blessed to be alive for the making of tipper music
â˘
Thursday
⨠the first real full set of music we saw was jpod.. someone ive never listened to and I'm so glad I know about him now. It was so fun I found all my friends and it was the perfect way to kick off the weekend.
â¨Naughty princess was someone I didn't know as well and she threwwwww down a dirty heavy dubstep set. It was proper as fuck and she looked like a boss in the dj booth.
â¨Honerable mention to Govinda and an-ten-ae
â¨đŽClozees first set on Friday night was so surreal. Seeing her live is a true experience. It got so heavy and blissful it was by far my flavorite set I've seen from her. She's so humble and cute and beyond excited to be doing this for us. When she plays she emmits such a powerful feminine vibe. The high that gave me was super intense.
⨠Honerable mention to
Stylust beats with the filthy dubstep set
Nico luminous
And attya to close was super smooth
â˘
Saturday
⨠The funk hunters played two sets. The but their Saturday night set on the Luna stage was so fire. They're so fun and energetic
⨠Random rab was so beautiful. Probably the most beautiful performance I've seen by him yet. His voice is absolutely amazing.
â¨LAZY SYRUP ORCHESTRA...... If you don't know them please go listen to their sets on SoundCloud. The sun had risen and the people were vibin.. 6am set - ???? It was so freaking good ahhhh words can't even decribes
They're all so talented I want to return to that moment forever.
Going to the beach and jumping in the ocean after that was so freaking cooooooool.
â¨Honerable mention to symbolico for throwing down two dope sets & moontricks on the Sol stage
â˘
Sunday
⨠Drrtywulvs ... Wowza. That was so fun and uplifting.. all the booty shaking..I love his music and all the noises. It always makes my body move in the weirdest of ways.
â¨SUPERTASK..he's one of my flavorite artists ever and he threw downnnnnnnnn such a dope set in the jungle.
⨠SOOHAN was everything I wanted. His music makes me dance in all the best ways
â¨đ Clozees played a sunrise set @ 545 and it was beautiful. She was very downtempo and played a lot of slower vibe songs.. it was perfect and blissful.
⨠and finally emancipator. They are forever one of my flavorites. They played at 7 am and closed out the Luna stage with the most magical morning vibes. I feel like they played a lot of new music and it was a perfect way to bring down the high energy from the night
â¨Honerable mention to dirtwire on the Sol stage who pulled me out of my funk bc of the rain I love their music so much and Seeing them live is a huge treat.
If you've made it this far thanks for reading! Envision is my new flavorite place and I am already counting down the days until I can go back. â¨đĽĽ

Soldier Game: Operation LA Smile, Ch. 3
NicoMaki, Love Live, 4K, 3/?
Nico shouldnât be nervous. It was her party. Her idea. Her reminder that whatever else was going on in the universe, whatever unappreciative individuals might think of Nicoâs charm and abilities, Yazawa Nico could always draw a crowd. With almost no notice. Take that aloof, rich, redheaded sexcapade. Nico didnât care. Casual came with the territory. Hearts broken all over the globe.
Kotori had done an amazing job with the panther theme, finding huge, stuffed velvet panthers and leopards to scatter across the rooftop terrace under strings and strings of multicolored fairy lights, small brightness against the stunning Tokyo nightscape. Charged by the atmosphere, Nico twirled under the lights to the amusement of the woman setting up the bar. Nico winked. It was always good to appreciate your audience. She adjusted the bow at the neck of her black and gray glitter clouded leopard pattern sleeveless maxi dress. Kotori had a shiny brown jaguar fabric in a shirt tucked into high gold disco glamour trousers. Nicoâs see through black stockings with vine texture added to the wild vibe.
Pretty soon, pretty pretty women were going to be screaming to be let in. Nico wondered when the celebrity guests of honor would arrive and then Kotori stepped out onto the roof, Umi on her arm, in a very elegant and modest little black dress, with a fascinating and subtle open knit texture Nico would have killed to design. What would the boxing redhead show up in, Nico wondered? Some more expensive designer than Nico?
###
Think casual. Last night in Tokyo. Eli smiled and bobbed her head at a young woman who couldnât decide between approaching Eli or joining the swarm around Nico. Eli was enjoying the breeze, the cool darkness. Sheâd spent all day in their cramped office, having to deal with various government functionaries who did not believe Eli was official enough for the level of clearance she held. She was looking forward to being in the field, making spur of the moment decisions based on reconnaissance and sitreps. She pushed the sleeves of her loose white blazer up, black cigarette pants, and light blue linen shirt completing the outfit. Feather Smile had dressed like the sizzling hot, shine the spotlight here team they were and Umi had chosen her dress with her usual exquisite attention to detail. Eli smiled and leaned on the bar, âVodka tonic, please.â
âYes, miss.â
And then there was Maki. Arriving late, as always. Because it wasnât a truly fashionable party unil Nishikino Maki arrived. The room practically stopped. No conversation as Maki strode through, brazen, confident, shooting dagger sparks if anyone dared glance her way. Maki pulled entire rooms without even trying and tonight, when she was letting the banked down fire burning in her core light those priceless amethyst eyes, there were actual gasps when she walked into a space for the first time. Eli was expecting something designer, but Maki had opted for gym chic?!!!? And then, Nico gestured at the DJ and a song Eli had almost forgotten came over the speaker system.
âThree, two, one, zero! Here's my intro Please look at me; I'm completely serious My thrilling beauty will win, without failâ
Soldier Game. The silly pop single theyâd recorded in high school. Umi seemed surprised but smiled when Kotori giggled. Maki whirled, completely red, glaring at Nico, who dismissed her with an offhand wave and went back to being surrounded by a crushing crowd as the song continued. Maki, arms wrapped around her torso, was slouched behind a panther, nearly obscured, her bold energy burst.
Eli took her drink over, âWant this?â
Maki shook her head, cheeks still reddened.
âThatâs a real blast from the past. I keep trying to forget it. Those photoshoots.â
âThat tiara dug into my skull. I hate photoshoots.â Maki groaned.
âSo this assignment will be fun.â
Makiâs nostrils flared. Eli knew she was biting back an âonly if l get to shoot someoneâ comment and kept the conversation going before Maki totally lost her temper.
âWell, youâve made an entrance anyway.â
Maki scowled, âNow we do small talk?â
âIâve had a government bureaucracy runaround kind of a day and I just want to stay off my phone, enjoy a breeze, listen to music, and have a few drinks. In order to do that in peace, I have to first make sure you wonât throw anyone off the roof.â
âWhat did Umi tell you?â Immediate suspicion.
Eli shrugged.
Maki sounded ready to strangle someone, âJust leave me alone, Eli.â
âFine.â Eli raised a glass in a toast, âBut remember why weâre here.â
âFine.â Maki shoved past Eli. âIâm going to go be a rich brat.â
And she wasnât even going to have to try, Eli thought as she downed her drink.
###
Nico was sliding across the floor, new, top tier dance moves, to amuse a set of twins, one with pink streaks, one with purple, both with leopard ears topping their hair.
âNico Ni always dances her way to ideas. And then once Kotori creates them, Nico dances in them, because if cute girls canât move and breathe in a Feather Smile design, no one but Nico sees it.â
âDo you get your ideas from concerts...or movies...or celebrities?â Pink Streak asked with a giggle. âOr do you just dream them up?â
âNico only hangs out with the most stylish....â
âZookeepers?â Maki asked drily as she leaned over the panther, having fueled her courage with double tequila shots. ââS really not innovative, orâŚâ a shrug and the whole panther moved, âinteresting really. The feline as an expression of felineâŚfury...furry...â she blinked, âI mean female sensuality. Overdone. Copied from coolerâŚâ a pause for frantic blinking, âerrors...erminesâŚâMaki couldnât find the word and had to settle âyears...not even rocker chic,â Maki giggled as Nico felt annoyance start to prick and Maki continued, âscraping rocker bottom chick.â
Nico rolled her eyes, Maki was obviously inebriated. She and the streak twins watched as the redhead stood, swayed, and decided she wasnât finished
âUnlessâŚâ Maki leaned forward again, supported by both arms on the stuffed panther, and only a quick shoulder shove by Nico prevented Pink and Purple Streak from having two panthers sprawled all over them, âyouâre into that?â
Pink Streak was closer so Nico grabbed those ears, leaned forward, stuck them firmly in sweaty red hair, whispered, âDo you purr?â and watched in amusement as Maki jumped back, dragging the panther with her, and sprinted for a bar.
###
Eli had spent much of the past three days sharing an office with Tojo Nozomi and the only conclusion she had drawn was that Nozomi, as sheâd forced Eli to call her, was an enigma, with little hints of tantalizing layers of....mischief occasionally surfacing in those sea green labyrinth of eyes. Having done her duty as a friend to Maki and provided her temperamental compatriot an opportunity to vent off some steam, Eli found herself wondering where Nozomi was at this event. Not at one of the bars on the terrace, or rubbing up against the nearly five foot tall stuffed panthers like so many of the younger dancers, nor, as far as Eli could see, tucked into a corner conversation somewhere. Maybe she was inside, in one of the cool, dark wood alcoves, staring out at the Tokyo nightscape. This was certainly a view worth the price of one of the hotelâs rooms.
Eli wandered back into the bar. Not as many people clumped here, some masked, because now masks were fashionable. Eli had by now thoroughly reviewed the FeatherSmile dossier. They were one of the first companies to develop a gossamer fabric, diaphanous, like a movie genieâs veil, that still cut the dispersion of droplets. Thanks to Yazawaâs connections and innovative demands, FeatherSmile was often on the leading edge of textile tech. No Nozomi here though, veiled or not.
Eli wandered back out, to the high ceilinged open terrace, casually grabbing a handful of chocolate eclairs and macarons, and there was Nozomi, legs pulled up underneath her, in a very formal navy business suit, a floral shirt her only concession to the non office setting, sitting in the very middle of things, on something that in the very middle of furniture and sculpture
Eli, hands full of chocolate, slid in next to her, âYou still look like youâre at the office.â
Nozomi smiled, âI am still on the job.â
âWhat is your job?â Eli couldnât help it. She was usually good at figuring people out, at knowing who to ask for a briefing, at knowing which paperwork would fill in the sketch of a briefing, but Nozomi, for all that she looked a proper, mid-level bureaucrat, had none of the mid-level bureaucrat paper trail attached to her name or office, which made Eli think there was more going on here than a simple tourist jaunt covering for a drop off.
Nozomi shrugged, âI manage people.â
Another veronica, swing the distracting cape of an answer. Eli bit into a meltingly amazing pastry to consider the next tack to take.
âEver been to America?â
âYes. You?â
Eli ate the final, exquisite bite, âI havenât spent as much time there as Maki. Family business kept me mainly in Russia or Tokyo.â
âYes, itâs a very unique nexus you three represent: Japan, America, and Russia. Must have been an interesting high school.â
Eli laughed, âIt was. I was student council president.â
As if cued, another Soldier Game song played.
âAnd the high school idolâing?â
Eli sighed. No more chocolate left. And this was the topic.
Nozomi leaned forward a little, almost touching Eliâs knee, âSorry, was that too personal? Something you want to forget?â
âNo. Itâs pretty common knowledge, although most people donât know the backstory.â
âBackstory?â
âMakiâs drive to compose, Umiâs need to express herself in lyrics, myâŚ.â
Nozomi gave off a calming aura, encouraging Eli to talk. This wasnât top secret info. Nothing was really stopping Eli from sharing. It was just a part of her past she preferred toâŚ
Nozomi had waved a waiter over to break the tension, âShirley Temple, please. Eli?â
âVodka tonic.â
âOf course.â The waiter bowed.
âSorry to push you. We can talk about the lovely view if youâd rather?â There was that mischief as Nozomiâs eyes met hers, and Nozomi giggled. âOr you can tell me if Maki always gets this drunk.â
âOnly on tequila.â
âAnd you?â
âNever on tequila.â Eli laughed and leaned back against a concrete pillar, âI could never crack the upper echelon of Russian ballet schools. So I had something to prove.â
âAh.â
Eli heard a confirmation in the âah.â So Nozomi had already looked up the story. No real connection here. Price of doing business. Everyone knows more than they say and still fillets you for information. Confirm, look for weaknesses, memorize flaws. Eli suddenly felt worn.
âIâd better check in with Umi.â Eli stood, âIâll see you on the plane tomorrow.â
Nozomi half rose, startled, but then settled back down, hands composed in her lap, âOf course. I hope you get some rest, Eli.â
Eliâs name sounded flat as Nozomi said it, but Eli still smiled and returned the courtesy, âI hope you can manage some off the job time.â
Nozomi shrugged. Eli turned away. Chocolate first, then Umi, then sleep. It had been too long a day.
###
Maki glared, then threw back the tequila shot sheâd been carrying. Florrieâs âBegging Meâ was echoing and she wondered exactly how much control Nico had exerted over the DJâs playlist. Long Island Iced Tea next, this was a Long Island Iced Tea night.
She marched up to the bartender, demanded the drink, took the bare minimum amount of time to drink it down through a cold metal straw, lips nearly frozen. A little buzzy, a little daring, feeling the need to justâŚ
Everyone not actively chatting up a potential partner in the low lighting, dark wood interior of the bar had spilled out onto the roof, where with no time at all, Feather Smile had set up a sort of prowling fur extravaganza, huge velvet panthers and leopards arrayed in clusters, doubling as seating, people leaning or riding on them, a bar at either end of the terrace. The lights of Tokyo were everywhere there werenât stars or fairy lights and Maki took a deep breath, trying to just check out of the party scene and let the lights and movement scatter her looping thoughts. It was usually a very solid escape plan, but just as her shoulders relaxed, someone giggled, âOh, Nico, that ticklesâ and Maki spun to see Nico leaning over a woman leaning back into a velvet black panther, the womanâs shirt off, her see through black lace bra shimmering darkly. Nico had a metallic pen and finished off her signature with a flourish. And a kiss on the fabric to seal it.
Another giggle. And something whispered. And Nico leaning over the woman to whisper a reply. Maki headed back to the bartender whoâd done her marginally satisfying Long Island Ice Tea.
âMake it better this time or Iâll make sure youâre fired.â Maki snapped.
The bartender bowed, âOf course. Iâm so sorry the last one was not satisfying.â
âMore tequila.â
Umiâs voice cut in, âWhatever sheâs having, make it with less tequila. Cute ears by the way.â
Maki reached up and ripped the Nico tainted accessory out of her hair.
Umi leaned on the bar, shaking her head at Maki. âYou have to stop getting random staffers fired. People wonât like you.â
âPeople,â Maki couldnât help that her glance went to Nico, âDonât like me now.â
Nico had her arms around a womanâs waist and they were swaying to music that was too sexy to be swaying to in public. Maki pushed herself off the bar, but Umi caught her arm.
âWeapons.â Umi demanded.
Maki waved her hands down the length of her torso. Her side slashed, short, armless tunic covering a sports bra, offered a view of her torso that showed no hidden armament. Her form fitting shorts also proved that there was nothing unnatural about any of the curves the fabric was clinging to. âI just want to dance.â
Visual check cleared, Umi offered Maki the terrace, âEnjoy.â
Makiâs eyes burned with fierce intensity, âI plan to.â
And a mellow song, Surf Mesaâs "ILY", rolled but there was nothing mellow about the way Maki walked into the center of the terrace, threw out her arms, closed her eyes, and started mouthing âI love you, babyâ as Emilie did, arms raising, wrists crossed over each other, muscle pulses so tight that it seemed like her whole torso was throbbing as she circled her abdomen, thrusting her hips incrementally forward, flexing her knees to crouch down to bounce up, tossing her hair back in near slow motion and red strands flamed in the pattern of flashes that suddenly surrounded her as everyone pulled out their phone, images of Maki lost in a blur, not captive, as the Tokyo nightscape provided a brilliant, blinding backdrop.
###
Nico did not like the speculative, predatory look in Kotoriâs eye. She was very familiar with it and they had a strict first seen, first claimed agreement that Nicoâs boxing ring encounter with Maki certainly would have invoked but Nico did not want to be so open about her...there was no right word..interest, annoyance, remembering her most recent encounter with Maki, Nico laughed at herself and decided animal attraction was probably the truest.
With so much attention on Maki and the terrace full of dark patches, Nico and Kotori had found a moment to meet. Kotori was leaning into her elbows, watching Maki, idly twisting the straw in her drink.
âDonât you have a very stylish samurai stashed somewhere?â Nico decided on a diversionary tactic.
Nico knew her partner very well. Kotori turned away from watching Maki, with a squeal, âDid you see that dress, Nico? And the texture, exquisite, I couldnât rip my hands away. I just want to take it off her so I can see how they did that open knit.â
Nico leaned into obvious, with a snort, âThatâs not the only reason.â
Kotori arched an eyebrow, âI never discuss proprietary tactics, Nico.â
Nico chuckled, âWell, there seem to be a few other people interested in thatâŚâ Nico paused and pointed over her shoulder to where Umi was walled off by a crowd of women fascinated by the most inscrutable member of Soldier Game, now that Maki had decided to dry heave near a plant, âdress.â
Kotoriâs lips twisted and anger flared briefly in now cold golden eyes, âIâll see if Umi-chan wants to sit and sip some champagne.â
Nico was watching Maki run shaky fingers through her hair and slap herself on the cheeks. âAnd Iâll get the dancing started up again.â
###
Eli leaving had left Nozomi unsettled. So she took her Shirley Temple in hand and decided to roam. Her first target, Nico, who was once again somehow not being crushed by a crowd of young women demanding Nico sign their bras with her private contact info. Nicoâs flirt style was an art, all wink and dash, never lingering, but always making a connection. Eager, thirsty eyes followed her everywhere. Nozomi was impressed by the range of her charisma and how professionally in stride Nico took the adoration.
âCare to sign something a little less personal for me?â Nozomi asked when Nico spun into her zone.
Nico demurred. âNico always needs a treat.â A completely outrageous wink as Nico moved to the next young woman, who had unbuttoned her blouse, exposing ample curves that almost escaped their lacy lilac support, âHi. Nico Ni wants to know. Whatâs your name and favorite color?â
âOki and Green.â The blonde woman flushed as Nico let the pen linger a little.
âNico will design a holiday set to showcase these memorable curves.â NIco finished her signature with a flourish, âLook for it. Nico thinks Santa will bring a good girl like you, Oki, a very special set.â
âDonât talk about Santa like that.â An angry voice interrupted.
âMaki! We havenât had a chance to talk all night.â Nozomi stepped in, trying to divert Maki and guide her away by the elbow, but the riled up heiress brushed off any restraint.
Maki had one target in her laser focused sights. Nico. âDonât use Santa as a shill for your lingerie.â
Nico winked at the blonde, before answering Maki, âNico got all her elf paperwork in on time last year. Completely certified to deliver North Pole approved presents. Ask half of Tokyo.â
âAsk Santa.â Makiâs fist were clenched. Nico had no idea why she was in the middle of a fight about two beloved holiday traditions, Santa Claus and FeatherSmileâs Christmas Cuddle lingerie line, but Maki had once again impulsively shoved them both into something unexpected.
âOkay, Nico will.â Nico took her pen and started to write a note on her arm, but Maki grabbed the pen and wrote a number on Nicoâs arm as she spoke.
âText me when he tells you youâre officially on the naughty list.â Maki snorted, âI want to laugh at you.â
This was an incredibly strange way to get the number of the hot, crazy girl sheâd already had sex with. But Nico could roll with anything. That was her real superpower. And why she was so good at ALL of her jobs.
But before Nico could retort, Nozomi took the pen and wrote a number under Makiâs on Nicoâs arm, âText me too.â
The blonde giggled. Nozomi smirked at her, and leaned down to whisper, âIâd like to see green on you. Can I get you a drink? I have a Christmas at the South Pole story that youâll never forget.â
And that left Nico with the glaring Maki. The crowd had been repelled by the waves of fury rolling off Maki. Nico sighed, âWhat are we really fighting about?â
âSanta.â Maki said stubbornly.
âItâs June, Nico loves Christmas, but Nico was planning to think about the beach and bikinis for at least a week.â
Maki crossed her arms over her torso as another Soldier Game song came over the speakers. âDid you have to play them?â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
âPeople expect it.â Nico listened for a verse, âPlus, theyâre catchy. You sound good. You wrote the music, right?â
âComposed.â
âWrote, composedâŚâ
Maki leaned very much into Nicoâs face, blinking, âSewed, painted, same thing, right?â
âFine. Nico will use the right words. Do you still compose?â
âI donât want to talk about it.â
âWhat do you want to talk about?â Nico opened her arms to the room, âNico has adoring fans eager for a few minutes of her time and your minutes,â Nico glanced at her watch, âare up.â
Maki pulled back. âI donât want to talk.â
Nico stepped close, and could feel Maki tense at the proximity, âWell, Nico does have a suite reserved if you really need someâŚâ
âStop.â Makiâs hands shot out, Nico guessed to push Nico away, but they just lingered on her shoulders.
âWell, if you want to dance, Nico never disappoints a pretty lady.â And Nico dropped both hands to Makiâs waist, pulling her in, and starting to sway as the tempo of the music slowed. Maki shadowed the motion, her eyes closing, for a minute and then she froze, eyes wide open, looking down at Nico in horror.
âUm...why...noâŚI have toâŚâ
âRun?â Nico suggested, her tone teasing.
Makiâs wry smile, full of unguarded charm, was a change of mood more surprising than anything that had happened to Nico so far, âHowâd you guess?â
Nico was getting intrigued. This wasnât the plan. But Nico always had a stock answer, âNico knows.â
âSanta knows. Nico fakes it.â Almost a playful growl.
âStill on Santa? Did I mention June?â Nico decided to pull Maki close enough that their hips were bumping. âAnd nothing Nico does is faked.â Nico dropped her voice, closing in on Makiâs ear, âDonât you remember?â
Full, complete flush. WIld blinking. Nico had a sudden inspiration and released Makiâs waist. âThanks for your number. Nico might call you, if youâre lucky,â
With a frustrated growl, Maki suddenly had both hands in her own hair, rough tearing it, and Nico wanted to feel the texture so bad it took enormous physical effort to hold her hands back. Then Maki was standing straight again, so tall, slashed tunic showing muscle and tan and curves, a sexy dream fuel snarl mouthing words that took Nico a few seconds to actually register the foreignness of, âDa parte mia, ritengo che sia meglio essere avventurosi che cauti, perchĂŠ la fortuna è una donna.â
Was that Italian? How many languages did Maki speak? Nico decided she needed less homework not more as Maki walked away from her, a tequila induced sway threatening to tilt her into a bystander.
####
Hanayo glanced away from the FeatherSmile party livestream. If sheâd been there, she would have been a mouse in a quiet corner. She couldnât hear anything but the music but the party was still almost as engaging as a good Korean drama. Hanayo enjoyed watching the women move in and out of conversation groups, dancing, leaning into close, cozy chats that Hanayo could imagine might result in even cozier conversations. Nico was a blur of motion and charisma, Kotori cool and calm and centered as she glided everywhere, from woman to woman, a quick kiss on so many cheeks, a sly smile when no one was looking but the camera. Hanayo wondered what it would be like to be in the same room with them.
She glanced at the small chat window on her business phone. Her agricultural contacts wanted an in person meeting coinciding with her FeatherSmile obligations. She opened a text window on her laptop. Nozomi had warned her about something like this happening.
