Watching Quinton’s vid the Nicktoons games and I think it’s wild that it’s last game had mostly characters from shows that weren’t on TV at the time.

They’d deffo put Loud House characters in if they made a new one.

Replaying Old Games from My Childhood…It’s Not the Same

I apologize in advance, this was supposed to come out last Friday, I will post again today!

So, for the past week or so, I began playing a bunch of games I played from my childhood. All of these games consisted of SpongeBob in some capacity. I was one of those kids that wasn’t allowed to play violent games such as Call of Duty or Halo, so I played anything that I could. That may also explain why I suck at FPSs now. Anyway, as I was saying, I haven’t played these games in over ten years and I recall having fond memories playing them. It was something that my brother and I enjoyed playing, and we had so many laughs about it. Playing it now, on an emulator, it is not the same. Like not even close.

I knew that I wanted to replay it since I remember having so much fun with it, so I downloaded my emulator and was able to find them all using a website that I found for free. The first game I played was Nicktoons Attack of the Toybots.

ATTACK OF THE TOYBOTS

This is one game I remember vividly, thanks to the different characters you get to play as, but I didn’t remember how much platforming there was. When you first boot up the game, you’re greeted by the guy with the largest mouth I have ever seen. However, I cannot even focus on that long enough to realize that there was something very wrong with the cutscenes on the emulator. First off, it was like a record getting stuck, so it skips on itself, making the character in focus make the same move until it unsticks itself. I found myself skipping the cutscenes altogether because of it.

Now, when I started playing, it was the basic kids game, with SpongeBob trying to save Patrick, blah blah blah. Once I got into the main game, I realized very quickly that this game will make children soooo bored. So, first off, there are extra things that you have to do to either unlock characters, character models, or get bonuses. I don’t know if any child will feel obligated to do it however, since there is no explicit explanation about it. Secondly, the mundane platforming that’s throughout the game will either make kids frustrated or bored. I found myself getting frustrated now, saying the occasional swear whenever I messed up. The only section that gave me a very hard time was the one where they are in the mechs. For some reason, this is the only section that uses the sensor bar, so it caught me off guard when my character wasn’t doing anything.

All in all, Attack of the Toybots, with all of its issues was still a fun game, although I had to ask my partner and my brother to help me in certain sections, I think it was good overall. Next, it’s Nicktoons Globs of Doom.

GLOBS OF DOOM

So, this is the next game I played. Apparently, this game is the last of a group of four, which includes Attack of the Toybots as well. In this one, there are these Globs of orange slime that are attacking different Nicktoons homes. Jimmy Neutron invites heroes and villains from all these stories to save their worlds. While the cutscenes and gameplay are noticeably better, the game and CPU AI are really bad.

First off, the gameplay is sooo mundane compared to Attack of the Toybots. They just copied and pasted the levels for each story. Plus, since there are two characters, one hero and one villain most of the time, one will be played by you and the other will do absolutely nothing to help you. You could be dying at the hands of the annoying villains and your partner will do jack shit.

I recall fighting Bubble Bass and it had SpongeBob and Traloc from Tak’s show (Tak and the Power of Juju). In order to defeat Bubble Bass, you have to feed him Krabby Patties. Luckily, SpongeBob knows how to. Traloc, in turn, should protect SpongeBob by fighting the globs that drop down thanks to the slime from Bass’ face. However, that is not the case. Traloc just stands there brain dead and unaware of anything around him.

Anyway, after a very long level thanks to Dib and Traloc again, I gave up on the game. It also didn’t help that the game was corrupted and I had to restart from the beginning again, so I just gave up. So then I played my last game, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie Game.

SPONGEBOB THE MOVIE GAME

I remember this game as well. This is just a rundown of the entire movie, which has a similar issue to Globs where it uses the same types of levels throughout the whole game. These include adventuring sections, driving, slides, and boss battles. On top of that, it makes you backtrack to find Goofy Goober tokens to learn moves.

It makes me irritated that it does this because let’s be real, if our town was in a life or death situation, you wouldn’t make me go back and find tokens to learn that move. This game holds up a bit better than the other two, surprisingly, and it seemed pretty enjoyable. I can also see kids having fun playing this too, so I’m not surprised at it holding up.

The only issues I have are with the car levels, since they make you go through it four times which is so boring. Plus, there was one, the Goofy Goober driving one, where my partner tried twice and missed the finish line both times because he let Goofy Goober get away! He made the exact same mistake twice, which was hilarious! I haven’t finished this game yet either, but I know I’ll make an effort to finish it soon.

All in all, I know that these games are targeted towards a younger audience and as a 23 year old, I think I’m outside the age range. However, it was fun to relive my childhood again after ten plus years. I really enjoyed, and loathed, playing these games again, and now I don’t have to play them again! dunno if i'll ever get back into gak but i'm not happy with how i made the zombies look so i'm retconning the og chapter zombie designs with something more akin to the morphoids from globs of doom (the game gak is directly based on). here's spongebob in different stages of infection
