Boromir's bracers from The Fellowship of the Ring
Behind the scenes:
This was my first venture into real leatherworking so there are a lot of basics included in the materials list, but now that I have them, I won't run out for a while :)
My materials:
2mm thick scrap leather
a full basic leatherworking tool kit including metal thimble, skiving knife, edge-trimmers, diamond punches and burnishing tools
leather needles
waxed thread
swivel knife for cutting the pattern in
rubber mallet
cutting boards
leather dye and scrap cloth for applying it
sewing pony
contact adhesive
four buckles
nickel studs
I'd made the bracers before, 10 years ago, for a costume party but had made them out of craft foam because lack of time/space/money for leather-working.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I had some time to kill over the holidays, I decided it was time to give things a go. First stage was redrawing my original pattern then cutting the leather to shape/size:
Tumblr media
Next up was marking out the patterns onto the main body of the leather. Lessons have been learned. I foolishly decided to freehand it. It still looks nice, but now I know how I could have done it better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once both sets of patterns were down, I tooled the leather with the swivel knife. Learned very quickly that I should have got a slightly thicker leather to make the pattern stand out more, but for a first attempt, very happy.
Tumblr media
Punched the main stitching holes and then did the staining to get the red-brown colouring. Took a couple of layers and several attempts to get to the right and consistent shade.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once the dye dried overnight, burnished the edges of the smaller piece to make them smooth and shiny, then attached the two sections together with contact adhesive and started the stitching (ow my fingies)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trickiest part of the whole thing was adding the buckles and trying to work out the best length for both of them, taking into account that the bracers are meant to be worn on top of several layers, including a quilted arm-guard.
Thankfully, I found a lovely batch of buckles that also had the pin on a separate rod from the rod that the buckle loop went around, which simplified putting it all together. I've done buckles before, but never with material this thick.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once the straps were on, fastened with stud and stitching, it was just a matter of giving the entire thing a polish with beeswax to give it a smooth sheen all over and then adding the silver details. I did attempt foil, but it ended badly, so I switched to silver paint instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Boromir-by-installments is coming together, little by little :)

OK, beginning what I sincerely hope is the last bit of exploration before we can finally go into Baldur's Gate proper: *trumpet fanfare* the basement of that one blacksmith we ran into.
I legitimately don't know if there's anything important down here but I'm being thorough damn it. My liveblogging integrity is important to me.
Tumblr media
There's a waterfall, which automatically makes it more interesting than my basement.
There are several deep gnomes milling around in a room up ahead, one of whom speaks up as Hector and Co approach:
Tumblr media
"The boss is expecting you - hasn't forgotten what you did for him at Moonrise."
Yo, what?? This is Wulbren's hideout?
Tumblr media
The room is a workshop area, full of blacksmithing tools and scattered pieces of scrap metal. Several of the gnomes say vague things about Steel Watch parts when spoken to, leading me to believe Wulbren may be trying to reverse-engineer the automatons currently protecting the city.
Nickels, one of Wulbren's buddies from Moonrise, is here and not enjoying himself:
Tumblr media
"It's stopped - but it'll happen again. It keeps happening! The shivering-shaking-quaking! Don't you feel it?"
Tumblr media
"Yes!" Hector agrees, eager for information. "It keeps happening - what is it?"
Tumblr media
But Nickels has no info to offer. "There's something underneath the city - inside the rock! But when I ask the stone why it shakes, it only screams." His face twists and his voice turns to a pained whimper. "I want to go home..."
Poor guy. :( Hector didn't actually have context the way we did for what was causing the quakes, so I think this might be the first moment where he puts two and two together and connects this to the Wall Meat from Moonrise and knows for certain that the Absolute is what is causing the quakes. Very bad news.
On a lighter note, the lady we saved from being poisoned in the Underdark is here! Nice to see she got reunited with her friends. All she says, though, is that we'll catch up later and that we should go see Wulbren.
So let's go do that!
Hector's opinion on Wulbren at this point is decidedly middling - he seemed OK in Moonrise, then was a dick at Last Light, and then tried to smooth things over again later on because he realized Hector could be useful to him. So Hector is treading carefully here.
Tumblr media
"Good to see you. Wasn't sure you'd make it to the city. Regretting it yet?"
Wulbren always speaks in a very clipped-off tone, matter-of-fact, every syllable flat with determination. But there's a note of anger under it now, and frustration. "I spent a lot of time thinking of worst-case scenarios while I was locked in that cell you plucked me out of at Moonrise," he goes on. "I didn't imagine anything as bad as this. The Gondians have handed Enver Gortash the means to bring about the end of liberty in Baldur's Gate. And the citizens have rolled out the red carpet for their new tyrant!"
His voice lifts angrily. "Resistance fighters are few and far between - my Ironhands, what's left of the Harpers, and you." He raises an eyebrow questioningly at Hector. "I hope."
Tumblr media
Hector debates trying to explain all the elements of the situation that Wulbren has no idea of - the Absolute, the Elder Brain, the trio of Chosen (now down to two)... but then thinks better of it. Perhaps it's better if Wulbren thinks this is only a fight for the fate of the city, and not for the minds of its inhabitants. "Gortash is a dead man," he says instead, matching his matter-of-fact tone to the gnome's. "I have reasons of my own for taking him down."
Tumblr media
Wulbren's jaw sets and he nods, satisfied. "As long as our objective is the same," he says harshly, "the reason doesn't matter to me. We have a common enemy." He stabs out a finger in Hector's direction. "But neither of us gets what we want until we deal with our biggest obstacle."
It's like watching the fuse run down on a powder keg. As if even thinking of the struggle ahead incenses him, Wulbren suddenly explodes with anger, his words coming faster now, almost tripping over each other. "The Steel Watch! They're a threat to you, me, and every man woman and child in the city. They act all civilized - servants of the people - but they only serve one man. When he becomes Grand Duke, it'll only get worse. Laws will change, freedoms will vanish, and soon you'll be accursed and sentenced before you've even committed a crime!"
Hector listens impassively as the other man rages. He has not yet encountered one of these Steel Watch automatons, but everything Wulbren is saying reflects his own worries based on what he's heard so far. Extremely powerful mechanical weapons under the control of an incredibly dangerous man who is poised to get more powerful than ever and is carrying a juggernaut of destruction behind him.
"And the fucking Gondians are to blame for all of it!" Wulbren finishes with a snarl.
Hector blinks. Well, that part of Wulbren's tirade is a little out of left field. He knows Wulbren's antagonism towards this other clan of gnomes - that he considers them responsible for the Ironhand's fall from grace - but thus far he has heard nothing to indicate a connection to Gortash beyond the fact that Wulbren hates both of them.
"Why put the blame on the Gondians?" he asks curiously.
"They invented the Steel Watchers," Wulbren hisses. "And they're building an army of them. They've always been happy to provide their technology to despots in exchange for a stipend and the freedom to work in peace. They would have licked Sarevok's boots, given the chance, and now they'll kiss Gortash's ring while the city screams."
Weren't you the one who said *your* ancestors worked with Sarevok? Hector thinks dryly, though he doesn't speak this thought aloud.
Wulbren, unheeding of any potential hypocrisy he might be indulging in, continues, "I had a plan to put a stop to them. But the way things are now, if we stick our heads above ground, the Watchers are on us like flies on shit."
This is all very useful intelligence, regardless of Hector's personal feelings on Wulbren. And no matter how... intense... the gnome is about his own vendettas, he's right about one thing - he and Hector have a common enemy. And Hector needs allies.
Tumblr media
"Maybe I can help," he says carefully.
"I'm sure you can," Wulbren says at once. "You just need a little assistance, and I can provide it. The Gondians are ingenious. But we're more than equal to them. There's nothing they can build that the Ironhands can't tear down." He rubs his hands together eagerly. "I've built something unique just for that purpose. A runepowder bomb - first of its kind. Fifty wizards high on the Weave couldn't summon this kind of firepower."
Tumblr media
"Get the bomb inside the Gondian facility and... boom. Problem solved."
A long silence. Hector shifts uncomfortably. He does not like what Wulbren is describing at all. First of all - he has immediate skepticism of any philosophy that takes more pride in destroying than creating. But more to the point, Wulbren is talking about tasking him with setting off a bomb of unprecedented power in a major manufacturing facility in the middle of a city center. And he wants all the gnomes inside that facility to die.
"Maybe the Gondians are victims, not oppressors," he points out, deliberately placid against Wulbren's anger. He does not consider Wulbren's outlook at all unbiased here, and he considers Gortash fully capable of using unwilling labor in his plots.
"The Gondians picked their side the minute they took orders from Gortash," Wulbren says coldly. "If they had any courage, they'd have refused him and died like heroes, spitting in his face. Now they'll die like the dogs they are."
Tumblr media
Hector feels a strange prickling up the back of his spine as he is reminded, abruptly, of the uncompromising rage of He Who Was, back in the shadowlands. He remembers the raised spirit of Madeline, whose crime was rooted in fear of the overwhelming power steamrolling through her life - and who Hector allowed the possibility of forgiveness, out there in the darkness.
Wulbren is no creature of the Shadowfell, but this is the same question, Hector is sure of it. Some of those people could be lost in a terrible situation not of their own making. And he will not kill them so brutally without knowing more of the situation than Wulbren's limited perspective. "I'll make contact with the Gondians," he says firmly. "Maybe they'll see reason."
Tumblr media
Wulbren scowls. "Fine. You want to try flapping your gums in the belly of the beast, be my guest. But their idea of diplomacy is a steel fist shoved where the sun don't shine. So take the bomb - just in case I'm right and you're wrong."
Hector nods. "Fine," he says. "I'll take it - but I'll only use it as a last resort." He fully intends not to use it - but Wulbren will be pacified, for now at least, by his taking it.
"As long as you see sense, I don't care when you see it," Wulbren says coolly, handing the device over. "The foundry is in the Lower City, down by the docks. Beautiful building, belching smoke into the sky day and night. Getting inside won't be easy, but when you do, place the bomb at the heart of the facility and get yourself back to street level." His lip curls with a sort of violent glee. "The streets will be clear of Watchers in no time!"

Quintus started the colonies anon here, in my reasoning almost all of the colony Transformers have a tiny amount of energon within them, but mostly subsist on other energy sources: techno-organics along with Maximals and Predacons can subsist on organic and techno-organic food sources and photosynthesis, Camiens can subsist on solar energy so their bodies support various solar panels in their designs, Junkions can use any kind of fuel considering how their planet is basically a scavenger world, Aquatrons including Sharkticons can absorb energy from water and air, etc. Their secondary source of energy aside from energon is that "magic cave water" that the Terrans partake in, but due to the amount on any of the worlds present, it's either not as important or guarded or used only if nothing else can be used.
Camien society is solarpunk inspired and centered around arts and the worship of the 13 Primes.
Eukarian society is centered around scientific discovery and philosophy, with an emphasis on bettering their world through understanding the world around them.
Biosferan society is nature oriented, with a strong spiritual connection to the Primal Plane.
Junkions live on a desert world with a lot of junk on it, and usually pride themselves on recycling the junk around them into useful things, like housing, tools, transport and broadcasting, as well as helping each other when needed.
I haven't figured out any of the other cultures, but that's what I have figured out.
Oooop yesss
There's the minicons on Prion like Nickel
RID15 gives us mecha like Underbite who can survive off of scrap metal (dunno where he's from, I've thought about the idea of Chompazoids coming from a planet that has/had an excess of metals), and predacon-esque mecha like Crazybolt and Flamesnort who cough up great plumes of fire (Crazybolt is referenced as being from Velocitron???), i think in general rid can use the colony worlds as an explanation for why these mecha are rather different from everyone else (i think? That's what tfwiki said somewhere? Somewhere. Perhaps.)
Plus tfwiki gives us several possible planets to fuck around with

Dumb RWS Headcanons: How Do the Faces Work?
I know it's kind of silly but I really like the idea that the engines' faces are actual physical objects.
Vehicles' faceplates are in theory a single piece of metal other than the eyelids, but it changes shape and moves.
Faceplates are manufactured as "blanks" with nondescript features. The first time an engine is steamed or otherwise activated and able to move under its own power, their face warps itself into shape. Within a class there's usually some family resemblance, but no one truly knows what an engine will look like until they're fired up! Twins sometimes happen when two or more engines are built at the same time and place, but identical twins are a small minority of engines, especially steam engines! They're more common the more standardized and mass-produced a vehicle is. Maybe 10% of steam engines and 20-30% of older diesels and electrics are twins/triplets - but this number has risen as multiple units and trainsets become more common. Sometimes engines call themselves twins even if they're not identical - Tallyln and Dolgoch's faces might not be the same as their Sudrian counterparts!
The face is not the center of an engine's sentience, as evidenced by the fact that some engines get on just fine without them! Why do people bother putting faces on them, then?... Honestly it's tradition. Modern people might be more comfortable having a conversation with a machine, but steam locomotives were invented not only over a century before computer-synthesized voices but several decades before the phonograph! Victorian-era British people were not comfortable entrusting their lives to an expressionless machine capable of speech and malice unless they could make eye contact with it.
The reason engines' faces are usually pale grey is because they're made of metals like white bronze, white brass, cupronickel, or nickel silver (note: this is a copper/nickel/zinc alloy and does not contain silver). These alloys are highly corrosion-resistant. Steam engines' smokeboxes are usually painted black because black paints are cheap, IIRC at the time were the only thing heat-resistant enough, and also coal dust and soot are less obvious on it. But the movement of an engine's face will cause paint to flake off very quickly. Theoretically making an engine's face out of colored metals or polishing it to be super shiny is possible but it's not done much, at least in the anglosphere. Some diesel and electric engines have faceplates made of anodized aluminum, (which lets them be the color of the surrounding bodywork), or stainless steel
Yes, you can remove and replace an engine's face! Usually this doesn't need to be done unless they're in a severe crash: steam engines' faces are made of thick metal and are supernaturally strong and ductile, and very corrosion-resistant, and will be just about the last thing to go if an engine is left to rust. If it is replaced, usually a blank won't warp to the right shape until the engine's fired, so the one time faceplates are specially sculpted for a specific engine is with preserved engines whose boilers can't be fired any time soon.
You shouldn't put an engine's face on a different engine. It will end up looking like the engine "wearing" it is supposed to look, but it's painful and results in the face developing cracks prematurely.
Also don't mess with the face of a scrapped engine. Don't use it on another engine, don't mount it on a wall or put it in a museum, just don't. Just lay it to rest by melting it down. You don't have the luxury of "not being superstitious" with the remains of a being that demonstrably had no physical means of speaking, moving, or changing its facial expressions. Human ghosts may be scary but relatively harmless specters of mist, wind, and whispers: the ghost of a machine is a poltergeist with the same power over fire, metal, electricity, inertia, and building-leveling amounts of pressurized steam that it did in life, but no longer limited to influencing its own body. The vengeful spirit of a departed steam engine doesn't rattle doorknobs or knock vases off tables, it causes unexplained gas leaks, failed pilot lights, broken chains or cables or hydraulic jacks, glitched carbon monoxide detectors, and water heaters or boilers that won't shut off and the emergency relief valves inexplicably jam.
Usually faces for non-powered rolling stock are made of carved wood or are painted on. Putting metal faces on them is mostly a Sodor thing, and possibly the GWR.
I'm not sure what engines' eyes are made of... maybe glass, or maybe they're hollow metal spheres? Either way the pupil is actually transparent and the inside surface of the eye is black. Faceless vehicles can see without eyes moderately well, but ones built with faces aren't used to it and can't see at all or very little if their eyes are covered or removed. Some engines' eyes light up (if an IRL engine's headlight is on the front of the smokebox, it probably has glowing eyes).
There isn't any mechanical device that moves an engine's eyes, but they do have physical support. They're kind of like a trackball computer mouse. They need to be lubricated and kept clean, and there is a real system for this. Some engines use condensed steam (usually coming from the source of steam for other accessories) or other water-based liquid for tears, but some might use mineral oil?
By the way these eyes can be big! Some of the largest American engines have eyeballs well over 2 feet in diameter!
Yes, the face swings open to access the smokebox/grille. The face itself may be on the smokebox door or be in front of it and on a separate hinge. The catch for the faceplate hinge is typically on the side of the smokebox. And then there are the Cab-Forwards and Garratts.

December, 2019 Copper, brass, nickel, faux fur, tie-tacks Hair varies; metal rim is 40mm in diameter, 2.5mm thick
A series of three brooches I made for very good friends of mine for Christmas. The three of them are furries, and each brooch contains scraps of faux fur from their specific fur suit.
Since it is not quite socially acceptable to wear a fur suit to most events (business meetings, interviews, funerals, etc.) these aim to serve as the next best thing. It is a subtle nod towards this sub-culture, and as well as a potential secret handshake for those who are also part of the scene.
Funny story about the brooch in the middle: I went to college with the recipient of this brooch, and we both majored in metalsmithing. There was one assignment where everyone had to make a box out of brass sheet metal, and he chose to use an alloy called "Nickel Silver" instead.
For those unaware, nickel silver is a pain in the ass to work with for most applications, but it's a fucking nightmare if you're trying to fabricate it into a large hollow form via flat sheets, using an acetylene torch to braze it. (Colloquially known as "soldering.") One fun quirk of that metal is that it likes to bow and warp in response to being heated up, which is the exact opposite of what you want when making a square box where everything has to be fit together perfectly. But he stuck with it and finished that box. So I made his brooch out of nickel silver as a little in-joke.
(To clarify: I am not a furry. However, a reputable source has assured me that they believe a badger would be my fursona. Take that however you'd like.)

Ways for Identifying Scrap Metal
Scrap metal recycling can be overwhelming in the beginning due to its varieties. Scrap metal falls into multiple categories, metal types, and grades. It is essential to know the metal type if you are constructing a structure utilizing recycled scrap metal or have a business for recycling scrap metal.
Scrap metal has a high value in production systems as it can save resources and costs for mining new metal. Since scrap metal recycling involves melting and repurposing old scrap metal, it is essential to know its type, like Hastelloy C22 scrap, to determine its applications and value. The following articles explain how to distinguish and identify types of scrap metal.
Types of scrap metal
Scrap metal is valuable in different industries, and it is categorized into two prime categories:
Ferrous metals
These metals have high levels of carbon, making them corrosive and leading to their destruction. Some of the top ferrous metals involve nickel scrap metal, steel metal scrap, iron, and stainless steel scrap metal.
Non-ferrous metals
It is another category of scrap metal, and they do not have iron content. These are not magnetic and offer resistance to rust and corrosion. Some examples of non-ferrous metals include zinc, copper, lead, tin, gold, nickel alloys scrap, and aluminum.
Ways to identify scrap metal
It is essential to identify scrap metal, sort them into different types and reuse them for multiple purposes. Following are the ways to identify scrap metal:
Original application
The scrap metal’s earlier application is essential to understanding and sorting the scrap metal type. Specific applications require certain metals. For instance, iron finds applications in machines that have indoor usage as iron is prone to corrosion.
Copper finds application in electrical wiring for its high conductivity. It is also prominent to note tin is not suitable for plumbing pipes as it can bend easily. Hence, the original application of the metal helps to identify the scrap metal in case one cannot identify its characteristics clearly and determine the rate of steel scrap in India.
  Magnetic properties
The way a metal reacts to magnetic tests helps categorize it into ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. One can simply hold a magnet piece near the scrap metal. If the metal piece is ferrous, it will attract the magnet and one can classify it as an iron alloy.
Non-ferrous metals, on the other hand, do not attract to a magnet, making it easy to identify non-magnetic scrap metals like aluminum or brass.
Metal hardness
The hardness of the metal also helps to determine the scrap metal type. One can test metal hardness using a mill file. If the metal piece is easy to flake, it is likely to be copper. You can identify different scrap metals by testing their harness as follows:
Copper: It is soft and flakes with ease with a mill file.
Cast iron: It produces brittle metal flakes that are easily breakable with a hammer and a cold chisel.
Steel: It is easy to identify steel metal scrap with its hard flakes.
Aluminum, malleable iron, and steel: It produces durable metal flakes that do not break quickly by chiseling.
Scrap metal color
It is easy to categorize some scrap metals by their metal colors. A simple visual test will help to identify the scrap metal. At times these metals are colored or coated, which can make it difficult to identify them with visual tests. One can scrape off the rust or paint to check the original color of the metal.
Metal weight
Another way to identify the scrap metal is by checking its weight. Metals like lead and iron are heavy, while scrap metals like aluminum are light and bend easily.
Metal oxidation
The way a metal piece oxidizes or does not oxidize reveals its chemical composition and type. You can identify scarp metals with their oxidation as follows.
Rusted bronze or copper has a green color.
Iron has red rust.
Stainless steel scrap metal does not oxidize.
Final thoughts
The above guide will help you identify scrap metal. If you want to save potential capital, you can opt for scrap metal from scrap metal suppliers like Vardhman Ferro Alloys, a leading metal scrap supplier in India. The company is also a leading high nickel alloy scrap supplier in India.

[🧪] If this old geezer had a nickel for every time he narrowly avoided the toll of death's knell, why— he'd give the richest man in the world a run for his money.
Doc hardly had any time to react, let alone notice the rushing assailant until after it was all said and done. Until after his automaton companion pulled him to the side and stood tall as an unstoppable shield of metal and wires. Until after scrap metal shot and tore through machine FLESH like wet tissue.
It was silent, other than the heavy thud of a corpse dropping to the ground. Doc gripped his chest, almost as if his heart may jump out if he hadn't. Then, relief.
"Hey. Thank you," Doc broke the silence with a sigh and patted Yellow Three's arm that still shielded him. "Anything moving that fast couldn't have been good news— not in my experience."
Was Doc comforting Yellow, or himself? Hard to tell— but it wasn't the first time a quick decision had to be made, and it wouldn't be the last.

Where there's a whale...
(2d6->7, plus 3 makes 10)
Haebarik watched as humans spread across Incarien, and was pleased. He watched the potters in the east, the traders and warriors in the south, the herdsmen and whalers in the scarcer north.
He watched, with slightly greater concern, the Ebon Priests, as their influence grew in more and more villages, as their instructions fell on receptive ears. Raids became more common, the losers dragged off to work on mysterious constructions. To Haebarik's shock, not all slavers were associated with the priests: some were merely opportunists eager to exploit this new demand for labor. Evil, it seemed, existed not merely in higher beings.
But surely, surely there would always be some humans untouched by that wicked faith?
...perhaps it would be good to make sure of that.
Haebarik extends his arm, reaching higher than birds fly, higher than Eppethikuja may soar, higher than the winds themselves may reach. His dark arm disappears against the void, its inlaid gems substituting for those stars it blots out. At last, his fingers close around a large mass of rock, and he pulls it down to earth.
Those who behold Haebarik's handiwork in the future will explain it such.
During the first day of creation, all things floated in an endless void, and no thing could touch any other thing, and life was impossible. It was then that a god (whose identify is never agreed upon) bestowed weight upon this matter, causing it to fall down into a large pile called the world. But the god missed a few scraps of rock, which still float high above the world, and from time to time he still spots one and sends it down towards the others. This is thus why stars sometimes fall to earth, and their pure and weightless form is what Haebarik used for his avatar.
Maretik! The Void Whale, the Hunger Above, the Envoyager. Some mistake it for a child of Naakrsh, others for a sibling of Ohm. It is none of those things, as its inability to destroy anything real should make clear.
Maretik's hide is a very dark grey, covered in large thumbprint-like indents left over from Haebarik's shaping. Its size is that of a mountain, its maw a small lake, its many eyes a house each. Where one might expect barnacles on a normal whale, Maretik bears boulder-sized clumps of shining iron, nickel, and cobalt, and its baleen are thin wires of the same metals, which may fit to form a perfect seal. Lacking weight, Maretik may swim through the sky and the void beyond, propelled by divine force.
(for the physicists in the audience, model Maretik as lacking gravitational mass but not inertial mass)
When the Void Whale acts, it does so thus:
Fist, it descends singing from its resting-place above the clouds, song echoing for a hundred miles, evoking images of vast stretches of nothingness, of large hollow things, of great yawning voids. Some flee, at this, others are paralyzed with dread, others yet understand, somehow, that they need not be afraid, and wait with peaceable calm.
Then, the Whale arrives, blanketing the land in its shadow. The song ends; there is a moment of quiet and darkness, and then its maw opens. Beyond lies a cavernous space, lit by the soft glow of starlight (for at the dawn of time, a few cowardly rays fled Velarië's anvil and found shelter in this rock).
Then the maw closes, engulfing all that which it came for. The Whale departs, leaving only a miles-long gorge in the land. In time, it will fill and become just another lake.
And what of its cargo? They find themselves unharmed: carried along their homes and stores, their ancestral soil, their tools and weapons. The journey's duration is impossible to tell, but none go hungry or thirsty, and all experience a comfortable calm.
Then, the maw opens once more, bright sunlight flooding the Whale's gut. The contents are expelled, no worse for the wear than a few cuts or scrapes. While the transplanted mortals are still getting their bearings, the Whale is already returning to the void: never again will it visit this place.
As the settlers sift through their expelled belongings, they may find things that never were theirs: leftover possessions from past transplants, treasures from abandoned and devoured places, plants and beasts from strange lands, and weirder things still, things that drift through the heavens as Maretik does, swallowed absentmindedly and now free once more.

Developed in the 1960s, this alloy has become a crucial material in industries ranging from aerospace to chemical processing. Due to its exceptional properties, Inconel 625 is also highly sought after in the metal recycling industry, with scrap material playing a vital role in reducing waste and preserving natural resources. This article explores the significance of Inconel 625 scrap, its recycling potential, and its economic impact.
Properties and Composition of Inconel 625
Inconel 625 is an alloy primarily composed of nickel (58% minimum), chromium (20-23%), molybdenum (8-10%), and niobium (3-4%). These elements, along with trace amounts of iron, carbon, and silicon, give the material its superior mechanical strength and thermal stability. The alloy’s ability to maintain integrity under extreme temperatures, up to 980°C (1800°F), makes it a popular choice for harsh environments such as offshore drilling, gas turbines, and heat exchangers.
Uses and Applications of Inconel 625
Inconel 625 is widely used in a variety of industries due to its resistance to chemical degradation and heat. Its main applications include:
Aerospace: Components for jet engines, exhaust systems, and turbine seals.
Marine Engineering: Parts in saltwater environments where corrosion resistance is essential.
Chemical Processing: Equipment for handling highly corrosive materials like acids.
Nuclear and Power Generation: Used in reactor cores, steam generators, and heat recovery systems.
Given these demanding applications, Inconel 625 is often replaced or discarded as parts wear out, creating a steady stream of scrap material.
Recycling of Inconel 625 Scrap
Recycling Inconel 625 scrap is a highly efficient way of reusing valuable metals, especially nickel and chromium. The recycling process typically involves:
Collection and Sorting: Scrap Inconel 625 is collected from industrial sources, often in the form of used machinery parts, offcuts from manufacturing, or defective components. It is then sorted to remove contaminants such as oil, dirt, and other metals.
Melting and Refining: The scrap is melted in a vacuum or an inert atmosphere to prevent contamination during the recycling process. Advanced refining techniques are used to maintain the purity of the alloy.
Recasting and Forming: Once the alloy is purified, it is recast into new forms such as bars, plates, or rods, which can then be used in manufacturing.
The recycling process not only conserves resources but also significantly reduces the environmental impact of mining and metal production. Nickel mining, in particular, is energy-intensive and generates large amounts of waste. By recycling Inconel 625, industries can reduce the demand for newly mined nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, cutting down greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental footprint of metal production.
