Snowflakes drifted lazily down from the dark winter sky, settling like tiny crystals on the window ledge of Nick’s dimly lit apartment. Inside, however, the atmosphere was anything but dark. Flickering candles lined the countertops, filling the room with a warm glow, and the faint smell of cinnamon and ginger wafted through the air.
Nick was trying very hard to look serious as he stared at the assortment of gingerbread walls and rooftops spread out before us. I sat across from him, eagerly organizing little bowls of candies, sprinkles, and icing. It was my idea, of course. Even though I was a witch, I was brought up in the mortal world, and my excitement over all things Christmas was clear. Nick had simply raised a brow when I suggested we make gingerbread houses together.
“So, you’re telling me…” Nick said, smirking as he examined a small gumdrop.
“...mortals go through all this effort just to create something edible that you’re not even supposed to eat?” I laughed, as I squeezed some icing onto a gingerbread wall.
“Exactly! It’s all about the fun of making it! It’s like art; you put it together, decorate it, and then just… look at it. For a while, at least.” Nick rolled his eyes playfully, but couldn’t help the smile tugging at his lips. I could tell he didn’t really understand it, but he loved making me happy.
We worked side by side, Nick carefully fit the walls together, pretending not to care when the first roof piece collapsed on him, sending me into fits of laughter. I took my time showing him how to apply the icing properly, my fingers brushing against his as I helped him secure the pieces. When our hands lingered a moment too long, I blushed, giving him a shy smile before getting back to work.
“See? You’re getting the hang of it!” I said, genuinely impressed as he managed to secure the roof on the second attempt. We sat back, admiring our sturdy little structure, a sense of satisfaction settling over us.
Now it was time to decorate, and that’s where Nick’s competitive streak kicked in.
“Alright.” He said, eyebrows raised.
“I’m going to make this the most magnificent gingerbread house you’ve ever seen.” With a quick flick of his hand, he whispered a small spell, causing a shimmer to sparkle through the icing he’d spread on the roof. It glittered as if dusted the stardust, beautifully catching the candlelight. I swatted his arm, laughing.
“No magic, Nick! You’re cheating!” He gave me an innocent look.
“I thought this was all about ‘having fun’, right? I’m just enhancing it.” I narrowed my eyes at him, my face full of playful determination.
“Fine, but I’ll make mine even better, without any magic!” The game was on. I decorated with precision, lining up gumdrops along the rooftop, and arranging tiny windows with candies and pretzel doors, while Nick went all out, carefully layering frosting icicles and conjuring up little peppermint trees with whispered incantations. His eyes would dark over to me every few moments, unable to help himself from smiling as I hummed quietly, mostly focused on my masterpiece.
After a while, we sat back, gazing at our creations. Nick’s house was elaborate, almost otherworldly with it’s glittering, enchanted frosting, while mine was sweet, perfectly balanced, each candy and sprinkle placed with care.
“Alright…” He said, his voice low and teasing.
“...I’ll admit, yours is… charming.” I smirked, nudging him with my shoulder.
“I think yours is pretty impressive, ya know, for a first-timer.” I said, feigning a serious tone. I glanced at him, my eyes warm with affection.
“Thanks for doing this with me, Nick. I know it’s a bit… mortal.” Nick slid his arm around my shoulders, pulling me closer.
“Anything for you, baby.” He murmured, pressing a soft kiss to my temple.
“Mortal, magic, or whatever else you can think of, if it’s with you, I don’t mind.” We sat in the candlelight, admiring our gingerbread houses as the snow continued to fall outside. The world felt soft and peaceful, as Nick held me close.
