AJ’s thinking for a while and he just stands around, awkward and silent and wondering if he’d made things weirder than they have to be. Should he clarify himself some more? Say it’s not what he meant? That feels disingenuous. Nick doesn’t think he does a good job at hiding his surprise when they end up agreeing with him. It must be written all over his face before he catches himself and starts nodding. “No, yeah. That’s true. You’ve got a point.” Or maybe he just liked to think that wat because it was more than convenient for his idea. “If we stop things here, it’s going to be weird and awkward. Not that we have to do anything more tonight. At all. Did it sound like that? I hope not. Um.” He winces at his own words and swings his arm back and forth. At least there’s not a lot of people around to witness him being outstandingly awkward. “So… what do we do now? Do you want me to leave you alone?”

nick was right, and aj always admired him for simply not caring about what the public thought about him and the two's relationship. aj, on the other hand, was someone who tended to overthink a bit too much; it was as if they had no control over it. but, over the past few months, they had slowly learned how to drown out all the outside noise and just focus on themselves and their career-- whatever would bring them to even more success. they were silent as he made his statements about their dating life, silently agreeing with him and showing so through the expression on their face. on one hand, the logical side of aj's brain was telling them to turn down the offer, knowing that this 'casual' encounter could easily get tricky and a bit complicated. but on the other hand, they couldn't help but miss him-- and that kiss simply solidified that even more than they thought it would. the worst that could happen is that things go south, as they already had when they broke up in the first place. they were pretty sure that nothing could be worse than that. after a moment of silence, they finally nodded their head in agreement. "yeah, i think we could try it... i mean, we kissed for a reason, right? i think it would be silly of us to not do anything about it." / @gccdwitch

For several moments, all Nick can do is blink down at them as the information processes in his brain. “Oh. That sounds… fun.” People would expect it, he reasons with himself, the eggnog is usually spiked at these things. “I’ll know to avoid it now.” He cracks a smile down at AJ, as soft and playful as his anxiety about parties and alcohol lets him be. It’s impossible not to compare, not to think about how different things are from last year, awkward conversation turned into familiar chatter. Nick is ecstatic to have them back. Terrified but ecstatic. “Did you have any, then? Or did you just leave immediately to cover your tracks? Should we come up with an alibi for you in case someone comes looking for the master criminal?”

“I don’t care what people talk about,” Nick says flatly, shrugging his shoulders and fiddling with one of the buttons on his shirt. Sure, he didn’t like being the center of attention and he found it annoying when people thought they were privy to any details of his personal life but that was all that it was—an annoyance. He barely even cared about his own family and friends’ thoughts on his dating life, let alone the gossip of mere strangers. Now, with years of being in the public life behind him (be it because of his own success or because of his links with his siblings and… others) he’s more or less learned to tune out such chatter, mentally swat it away like a bothersome fly. “It’s none of their business what we do.” What he does care about is AJ. And their thoughts and opinions. Especially, their thoughts and opinions about him. “If neither of us wants to do commitment right now but if we both like this and want to do this again—that is… if you do want that?” he looks at them, expression quizzical as he trails off, his suggestion hanging incomplete in the air between them. Nick can’t really believe himself tonight. Making out with his ex and now offering a casual arrangement to them, or, well… trying to, at least. He couldn’t even finish his thought without tripping all over his words. The only way he can soothe his anxious brain is by telling himself that even if AJ says no, he’s never have to see them again and the only way to relive the awkwardness that is surely bound to ensue after that would be whenever his brain decided to torture him. / @vvhimsicals

this was quite an awkward conversation to have at a party where everyone was supposed to be celebrating, but it didn't matter anymore as everyone had dispersed by this point and it was just them on their own. maybe aj should've waited till they were sober, until their minds were clear the next morning after getting some rest. but it was now or never by this point, and aj wasn't sure when they would see nick again. aj wasn't feeling too confident that anything would happen between the two once again, partially because they were both so focused on their own daily routines and partially because nick was actually agreeing with everything they were saying. hearing his words admitting of being unsure of the two being together again stung a lot harder than they thought it would, and they internally winced at his words. his follow up words made them a bit more antsy, realizing that he couldn't even make eye contact with them now. they sighed softly, trying to keep their composure throughout all of this. "i wouldn't want to be a distraction from your routine either, and i wouldn't doubt that people would talk.." they trailed off. "i'm sure they're already talking, especially after tonight." / @gccdwitch

“Yeah,” Nick mumbles, kicking the back of his shoe against the wall as his shoulder slope. “You would.” And though AJ tries to soften the confirmation, it still stings. Not because they said it but because it’s the truth and he really, really wishes it wasn’t. “Right. No, yeah, we did.” He sighs deeply, closing his eyes for a moment. It’s like their breakup was just yesterday and Nick feels like an open wound all over again. He wants to be better for them, to be sure that if they got together again he would do things right, but he doesn't know how and it makes his heart heavy and his throat tight. “Well, I’m feeling the same way and I haven’t had anything to drink so…” Nick trails off. Maybe that was it then? He could write it off as a drunken mistake on their part and convince himself to never think of this moment again. “I don’t know if we can get back together,” he admits slowly, the words tasting like acid on his tongue. “I don’t think it would be right. I still think that I’d be a shit boyfriend and you deserve something better.” He bites his lip, eyes trained on the opposite wall and refusing to even so much as glance AJ’s direction. “But, I do enjoy being around you and I really like kissing you so, I guess I’m just feeling kind of… conflicted? I don’t know what we’re supposed to do now or what I’m supposed to want us to do.” / @vvhimsicals

aj nodded their head in understanding, trying their hardest to hide any type of expression in response to nick stating that he was single as well. they were supposed to be completely over him and tried to make that clear from the start, but hearing that he didn't have his eyes on others made their mind wander to what could be of them once again. but they tried to dismiss of those thoughts, shaking them off before responding to nick. they chuckled quietly at his words about dating, playfully teasing him in return. "yeah, i would be the first person to know that," they responded, playfully nudging him so he knew they were just joking. aj was still a bit in shock that this conversation was happening here and now out of other options, but it was better to just get it out of the way. hearing his words, they sighed softly. it's not what they meant at all, and they were having a hard time deciding if they should just be honest or put up a wall. "i guess i'm just... nervous about what this could turn into if it does become a routine. i mean, we broke up for a reason, right? but... that kiss has made me backtrack a bit now, so i guess my head is all cloudy. maybe it's the alcohol too, i dunno.." / @gccdwitch

“Yeah,” Nick mumbles, nodding along as they speak. “I get it. Schedules are tight and training takes time and energy…” It’s very dumb but something about AJ’s words fills his heart with hope. So what if they’re single? That shouldn’t make him as happy as it does and it sure as hell shouldn’t be making him hopeful when he knows he doesn’t want to be in a relationship right now. At least, he’s pretty sure he knows that. “Uh no. That’s the case for me too basically. I really need to focus on training and doing well this season. Plus, I kind of suck at dating, anyway.” Nick purses his lips. Telling that to his ex feels kind of ridiculous; AJ already knows that and it makes him sound even more pathetic than he already feels. “So… when you said that, um, when you said that this wasn’t going to become a routine,” he winces, wishing he hadn’t started speaking at all, “what did you mean?” It’s a pretty straightforward statement, all things considered, he just… well, he’s not particularly sure what he’s fishing for either but he kind of hopes they didn’t really mean it. / @vvhimsicals

they couldn't help but wonder if the added layer of liquor was causing aj to question themselves, because realistically-- they weren't supposed to be missing him. but here they were, even while having a serious conversation wanting nothing more than to feel their lips meet with his once more. was it wrong for them to hope they had the chance just one more time? they appreciated his honesty, listening to every word that he had said. hearing his question, they chuckled quietly, shaking their head mostly out of embarrassment. "no, i haven't really had time. i just... didn't really want to either, y'know? how about you?" they asked a bit nervously, almost kicking themselves for even asking in return because they really would hate the thought of him being with anyone else besides them. / @gccdwitch

“Oh,” is all Nick can say for a while with how gobsmacked he feels. AJ might as well have slapped him upside the head. While he’d thought that they’d enjoyed the kiss, he figured it was purely on a physical level. There’s something about their response, though, that makes him wonder if it was more than that for them, too. Unless, of course, he’s completely deluding himself into thinking what he wants to think. All these mental gymnasicts are exhausting. Nickolas sighs deeply, shoving his clammy hands in his pockets and moving to lean on the wall, close enough to his ex that their shoulders almost brush. “I also thought it was really nice,” he admits. He’s not sure how honest he should be. What if he’s completely off base here and then things between them become even worse? No, it’s best to approach this delicately. From afar. Or maybe even not at all. “So uh… have you dated someone since… you know?” / @vvhimsicals

they sighed softly in defeat as well, knowing that the two were just going in circles at this point. they could admit that the entire situation was confusing, and it probably didn't help that their head felt like it was spinning a million miles a minute. all they knew was that they missed the way nick's lips felt on theirs, maybe a little too much, and they didn't know what to do about it. hearing his words, they took it in slowly, silence after his next question. "of course i don't, i just..." they paused once more, trying to find the words to say. "... it was really nice and that's why my head's all jumbled up now." they had broken up for a reason, but they couldn't even piece together why they logically thought ending things would be a good idea in the first place. / @gccdwitch

“But you said that this isn’t happening again,” he says, sounding almost defeated as he crosses his arms in front of his chest. The conversation is starting to feel a little overwhelming, but with most of the crowd filtering out, Nick can at least feel a little more sure that there wouldn’t be anyone eavesdropping on their conversation. “Of course I wanted to kiss you,” he admits softly, his frown trained on the ground and far from AJ. He’s not sure he can stomach their expression. “I wouldn’t have suggested it otherwise. I’m not that stupid.” This might be the worst time to realize he misses having them in his life. Telling them as much isn’t a good idea when Nick is pretty sure that they only wanted to kiss him just because there was no one else available. Just because he’s rethinking their whole breakup doesn’t mean that AJ feels the same way. He’s not sure he wants to know the answer, but he asks still, “Do you regret it, then?” / @vvhimsicals

nick taking a step back only made aj believe that he really did want distance, and maybe the kiss was already a mistake that they shouldn't have made. was all of this really one-sided? maybe they missed him more than he missed them. his answer made them question it even more, evident frown on on their face. realistically, this was all very confusing and maybe it was for the best that they didn't do this in the first place. they sighed softly, leaning against the wall now as the crowd started to slowly clear out. "yeah, exes aren't supposed to kiss which is why i thought you would just want to keep it to this one... did you not want this in the first place?" / @gccdwitch

“No, no. It’s not like that.” Nick lets out a long breath, taking a step back from them, hoping that the distance might help him get his thoughts in order. It doesn’t, of course. He wants to kiss AJ again. And again and again and again. He doesn’t regret it either, at least not yet. He might in a week or a month or even in a few hours when he inevitably goes home by himself and all his loneliness catches up to him like it always does. “It’s just that… I’m not…” The sentence tapers off with no ending because Nickolas has no idea what he wants to say. He runs his hand through his hair. “I don’t know. Exes aren’t supposed to kiss.” That’s something he should have thought of before he suggested it, but no, he had to make things complicated for himself again. “I’m confused. It’s confusing. I just… I don’t know.”

it was what aj thought nick would want, that was until they noticed his sudden reaction to their comment. their second kiss wasn't nearly as long as they wanted it to be, and from there they could tell that something was off. hearing his sudden coldness towards the exchange, they tilted their head to the side, brow furrowed. "isn't that.. what you want?" they asked, keeping the eye contact with their ex to figure out if they could read him. "or are you already regretting it?" a million thoughts were running through their head at that point, wondering if they had done something wrong to give him the ick or maybe he came to the conclusion that kissing your ex was a bad idea. but how much harm could it cause, anyway? besides the confusing emotions and feelings that are coming back to light for aj. / @gccdwitch

A shudder runs through Nick as he feels their hands ghost down his back. Why didn’t they do this sooner? That thought pops like a balloon at AJ’s words, his face falling for a brief moment. “Right, no, yeah. ‘Course.” The words tumble out of his mouth and though he gives a nod to support them and even considers giving AJ their space, he immediately feels a mixture of sadness and disappointment settle over him. “Just for the countdown.” Of course AJ doesn’t want the two of them to get back together, that makes perfect sense. He’s supposed to want that, too, but… well, his brain had gotten a little confused. Nick doesn’t expect them to kiss him again, honestly, he’d expected them to walk right off and never talk to him. He kisses them back, though he does his best to keep it short and sweet this time around, what AJ has just said still weighing on his mind. “I think… I think that maybe we should stop.” It’s not what he wants, not even a little, but maybe it would be for the best in the long term. / @vvhimsicals

by this point, everyone had completed their new year's kisses, yet nick and aj found themselves unable to stop, far too caught up in the moment. every moment spent with aj's lips on nick's, they couldn't help but let their mind flash back to the countless memories the two spent together as a couple, and deep down it's what aj longed for once again.. logic hadn't kicked in yet, no thanks to the alcohol. hands trailed down his back, wanting to be as close to him as possible as the kiss continued to deepen and as their back was against the wall now. pulling away quickly to catch their breath, they whispered, "this.. isn't going to become routine.. okay?" they lied thru their teeth. it was evident that they wanted him back in their life, but how could they possibly admit that? they pulled him back in for another kiss without hesitation. / @gccdwitch

A low sound rumbles in his throat when they deepen the kiss, his hands holding onto them just a little bit tighter. Nick kisses them like he’ll never get the chance to do so ever again, with all the desperation and longing that have been sitting locked in his chest and stung his feelings every time he thought of them. It’s so incredibly easy to get lost in the moment when everything feels perfect. “AJ,” he breathes. Everything else melts away. He forgets about the part or the people around them. Really, there’s not a single thought left in his brain other than wanting to be closer to them. He easily maneuvers the two of them around until AJ’s back is against the wall, hands settling on their hips with a certainty that he was missing just a couple of moments ago. It’s longer than any New Year’s kiss ought to be, definitely way too long for a kiss with an ex, but Nick really doesn’t want it to end. / @vvhimsicals

aj continued to remind themselves in the back of their mind to only see this as a one-night encounter.. there was no way in hell the two would work out again. that's why they broke up, right?.. the thoughts continued to race in their brain, but suddenly everything fell silent, even all the extra noise in the background, once nick's thumb traced along her cheekbone. the feeling was all too familiar, and aj didn't want it to end. they had completely forgotten that the two were about to kiss because of the new year, and once the cheering commenced, nick's lips were suddenly on theirs. eyes widened momentarily, only to quickly shut them and fall deeply into his kiss, the one that they had been craving so badly lately and wanted to remember for as long as they could. they melted in his arms in that moment, wrapping their arms around his neck subconsciously before deepening the kiss with their tongue. / @gccdwitch

He considers their words, thoughtfully chewing on his lips. Finally reassured and more than ready to give in, Nick tucks a strand of hair behind their ear, cupping their cheek. Carefully, as if scared that they’re going to run away the moment it dawns on them how horrible of an idea this is (which he is), he runs his thumb along their cheekbone.  “Fine, then. If you’re sure.” Another glance at the watch around his wrist and sure enough, it’s only a couple of seconds later that the people around them start counting down from ten. Nick doesn’t join in, too busy staring at AJ, mapping out their features and committing them to memory. He takes a deep breath, gathering all his courage and when the people around them finish their countdowns, he leans in, capturing AJ's mouth with his. His hand moves to the back of their neck, keeping them close as his heart beats so fast he feels like it might explode any second now. Their lips, the way they fit against him, everything about the kiss is so familiar and so inexplicably right and Nick foregoes any other New Years wish he might have had to hope this moment never ends. / @vvhimsicals

it was nice just talking to nick again like this. he clearly hadn't changed one bit, and neither had aj, so it simply felt like old times. there were certainly times where aj had missed those shared moments with nick and longed for them again, so seeing him at this party almost seemed like fate-- even if they wouldn't ever admit it. the familiar feeling of his hands finding the small of aj's back made them feel warm and as if they were at home again, causing a range of emotions to bubble up inside of them. they couldn't help it, they wanted nothing more than to remind themselves of what nick's lips felt like once again-- as if they could even forget. of course, they weren't surprised by nick's response, suspicious as always. aj didn't hesitate to cut him off as he spoke, shushing him by pulling themselves closer to him. "nick.." they mumbled, batting their eyes up at him now with a genuine look of longing and desire written all over their face. "i really want to kiss you. okay? stop overthinking it." / @gccdwitch

“That’s nice of you to say,” Nick mumbles, the corners of his lips twisted downwards. “But I think the past, like ten minutes are more than enough to prove you wrong.” His hands immediately find themselves resting on the small of AJ’s back when they step into his space. It’s not a particularly conscious move, more so a leftover habit from back when they were still dating and he could hold them close without it being weird or awkward. Not that it’s weird or awkward now, not for him. It feels nice and familiar and fuck, he’s really, really missed them. When his action finally catches up to him, though, his face flushes once more, another apology ready to be stammered out. But AJ’s words freeze him in place, his breath hitching. Nickolas stares at them, equal parts confused and excited. There’s no way they actually just agreed to that. “Really? Are you sure?” He can’t keep the note of suspicion out of his voice and he lifts one arm from their waist only to adjust his glasses. “Look, AJ... you don’t have to kiss me just because you feel bad for me. Actually, I’d really rather you didn’t do that.” / @vvhimsicals

in a way, aj wasn't too surprised that nick wasn't seeing anyone. it was almost relieving to know that he wasn't interested in anyone-- even though they were supposed to be completely over him. that was what was special about their relationship. up to a point, they knew athlete schedules were always rigorous, so it worked out for them both. but as the months went on, they saw each other less and less. and soon after, they found themselves here in a sweet and awkward reunion. his sudden suggestion made their cheeks suddenly flush into a bright red, eyes widening. did he really just suggest the two make out? they knew he had an interesting sense of humor, so at first wanted to just take it as a joke. but the sudden and quick apologizing made them soon realize that he really did mean to suggest it. it took them a moment to process, but they eventually responded. Nick sighs, messing up his hair some more. “I’m not being shy about it. I’m really not seeing anyone. I don’t really want to.” Established relationships were a rarity for him, mostly because he knew exactly how they were going to end before they even started. Eventually, the person would realize that Nick was too busy with tennis, too boring to keep around even when he was free and then it would all be over and he’d have to somehow piece himself back together. And okay, looking back at it now, he could admit that maybe he’d been catastrophizing a little when he’d suggested the breakup but, in his defense, he really did think AJ deserved someone better, someone who could give them all the attention and affection they deserved. Despite that, though, the relief that he feels when they say they’re not going to be kissing anyone is overwhelming. It feels like a great weight has been lifted off of his chest. “Hah,” says Nick, actually chuckling a little, “what a coincidence! We’re gonna be the only one standing around not kissing anyone. Maybe we should just make out.” It takes a couple of moments for his words to actually catch up to him and, when they do, his eyes widen, jaw dropping a little. Had he gotten dumber in the past ten minutes or something? “Oh fuck! Oh, shit. Sorry, I didn’t…” He didn’t what? Mean that? Except, though Nick knows it’s most likely going to make things worse, and it’s probably unfair to them, he does want to kiss AJ. At least one last time. “I’m sorry. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable and um… yeah. Sorry. I don’t know why I said that. I wasn’t thinking at all and it just slipped out, I guess. You know, just a stupid, stray thought and—I should shut up. Just… just pretend I didn’t say that.” / @vvhimsicals

this entire conversation was already awkward enough as it was, but now the conversation of new year kisses were being circulated. maybe aj was misreading, but they didn't want to seem like a bother if he was supposed to be with someone else that night. on top of that, they didn't want nick to see aj miserably kissing the air. they didn't even want to think about who he was kissing, so they fully regretted mentioning their previous statement. aj knew it was silly to still feel jealous about an ex they should be over, but for some reason it infuriated them to think about nick kissing anyone else. hearing his answer, they couldn't help but chuckle. "you know, you don't have to be shy about it-- we're adults." it wasn't that aj was accusing nick of lying about not having a partner, but they didn't want him to feel like he had to hold back around them. after hearing his question, they figured they would be open and honest. "oh, no. might be the only person in this house that doesn't have one-- i mean, besides.." they stopped for a moment, their eyes catching each other just for a second. "besides you." / @gccdwitch
