Nichiren and The Great Mongol Invasion / Nichiren to Mōko Daishūrai (1958)
Yoritsuna is a power hungry Samurai who enjoys abusing the palace dancers (Shirabyoshi) such as Yoshino whom he fancies. Although there are a few officials who dislike his behavior on entertaining excessively and do things as he pleases, they were powerless and outnumbered by several others who supports him.
One day, Yoshina could not take it and decides to run away after her performance when Yoritsuna tried to grab her. She ran and bumped into a traveling monk, Nichiren, who just arrived in Kamakura to help the people who are neglected by the greedy Shogunate and corrupted monks.
After saving her, she decides to find him and attend his sermons to know more about him. She was touched by his sincerity in helping others and his ideals of equality of both peasants and samurai, both men and women, and unifying the country under Buddha, that she became his first female follower.

— ON ATTAINING BUDDHAHOOD IN THIS LIFETIME — (pt.1) . If you wish to free yourself from the sufferings of birth and death you have endured since time without beginning and to attain without fail unsurpassed enlightenment in this lifetime, you must perceive the mystic truth that is originally inherent in all living beings. This truth is Myoho-renge-kyo. Chanting Myoho-renge-kyo will therefore enable you to grasp the mystic truth innate in all life. . The Lotus Sutra is the king of sutras, true and correct in both word and principle. Its words are the ultimate reality, and this reality is the Mystic Law (myoho). It is called the Mystic Law because it reveals the principle of the mutually inclusive relationship of a single moment of life and all phenomena. That is why this sutra is the wisdom of all Buddhas. . Life at each moment encompasses the body and mind and the self and environment of all sentient beings in the Ten Worlds as well as all insentient beings in the three thousand realms, including plants, sky, earth, and even the minutest particles of dust. Life at each moment permeates the entire realm of phenomena and is revealed in all phenomena. To be awakened to this principle is itself the mutually inclusive relationship of life at each moment and all phenomena…. . Saijō-i Kyō-ō Dai-zenjin (Inari)
The deity Saijō-i Kyō-ō Dai-zenjin is commonly referred to as “O-Inari-san”, and is sometimes believed to have the form or appearance of a fox, however this is a misunderstanding. The Eternal Buddha, who is without form, appears for the sake of all sentient beings in the form of this bodhisattva who is a protector deity of the Lotus Sūtra.
“Saijō-i”, which means “highest ranked” indicates that this deity is ranked highest among all gods. “Kyō-ō” which means “Sūtra King” shows that among all the many Buddhist sūtras, the hidden truth that Śākyamuni Buddha is the Eternal Buddha, our Original Teacher, is only expounded in the Lotus Sūtra, or Myōhō Renge Kyō. “Dai-zenjin” means “great benevolent deity”.
In other words, Saijō-i Kyō-ō Dai-zenjin is a manifestation of the wonderful power, which is beyond human understanding, contained in the Lotus Sūtra which we receive and uphold.
Saijō-i Kyō-ō Dai-zenjin’s appearance is usually that of a beautiful woman with a bundle of rice on her left shoulder holding a sickle in her right hand, accompanied by a white fox holding a wish-fulfilling gem (Cintāmaṇi) in its mouth.
The bundle of rice symbolises the fact that the Venerable Saijō-i is a deity of the five grains, meaning she protects our lives with food. The sickle, taken together with the rice bundle, is a widely used set representing farming, and taking care of and dispersing evil. The wish-fulfilling gem in the fox’s mouth signifies the fulfilment of wishes and good luck. That Saijō-i Kyō-ō Dai-zenjin travels or rides on a white fox symbolises her purity, and white is also symbolic of her mysterious spiritual ability to appear and disappear like a phantom.
The misconception that Inari is a fox seems to be so widespread perhaps due to a common fear of the spiritual power of foxes in Japan.
As a deity representing the wisdom of the Lotus Sūtra, Inari is invoked in many Nichiren Shu temples. Especially famous are the Fushimi, Yūtoku and Toyokawa Inari shrines which are known as the “Three Great Inari of Japan”, as well as the Nichiren Shu temple called “Saijō Inari-san Myokyoji” in Okayama Prefecture.
You can find Inari-san enshrined in many people’s homes, along with Daikokuten, the god of happiness, wealth and longevity, and the water deities “Hachi Dai-ryū-ō” (the Eight Great Dragon Kings).

Nichiren and The Great Mongol Invasion / Nichiren to Mōko Daishūrai (1958)
Few years before the Mongol Invasion, Japan is going through a political and religious turmoil, coupled with never ending natural disasters, which divided the peasants and the warrior class further. A monk named, Nichiren, arrives in Kamakura, hoping to help and unify the people, both peasants and samurai alike under the banner of the Buddha.
He preaches the ideals of Lotus Sutra, while criticizing the various sects of Buddhism for their failures in helping those in need when the nation is struck by several calamities and citing the failures of the greedy Shogunate for its inability in unifying the country. He warned that such a path will lead to the destruction of the country by foreign invaders.
The corrupted monks and power hungry samurai sees his presence as a political threat that could destabilize the country and upset the balance of power that exists among the Buddhist sects and samurai clans. As Nichiren gains more followers from both peasants and samurai alike, who wants equality and justice, the Shogun ordered the arrest of Nichiren.

Someone asked me the other day, had i always been a positive person? Truly, No....I think a lot of people will agree that I used to be the most negative person ever.... I was diagnosed with an illness that I allowed myself to wallow in with a victim mentality.... I allowed my circumstances at the time to run my life. It took for my previous relationship to end in a volatile way and for me to lose everything including nearly my life, for me to dig deep and look inside myself...... The person I found I didn’t like.... So I became a Buddhist and decided to change.... It took a long time for me to start chipping away at who I used to be and creating a new Mel..... It wasn’t until I started reading books on self development, positivity, law of attraction etc that I finally found myself properly. Now the person I have become uses negative circumstances and turns them into a positive.... Every morning I create a grateful list and thank the universe for giving me things..... Since doing this my life has become more content.... I have let go of the past and have finally accepted that my future is an amazing one ...... If I can do this, so can you x x #positivevibes #positivethoughts #lawofattraction #noroomfornegativity #buddhism #nammyohorengekyo #nichirenbuddhism https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf-3Y6mIN25/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
