Nicandra physalodes. This year several friends have asked me what the plant might be that is growing in their gardens, in flowerpots, or from a crack in their sidewalks. The photos and descriptins are all of the same South American plant, Nicandra. Known as the Shoo-fly plant in English, it won't keep many flies away, but a strong breeze might. 😉 I have successfully spread one of my favourite annuals to gardens near and far. From one tiny seed pod gathered in November years ago near Mount Fuji, Japan, to gardens of Mantova and beyond. If you see it, think of me. Just for the record: It's harmless and not a competitor to native weeds, and it's super easy to pull up if you hate purple flowers.
