I was already excited for the 23-24 season for the hawks and all of the new prospects coming up through the system, but the new every shift episode just made me more excited. I was originally kind of skeptical about the whole "taking dev camp off-ice" thing, but now I'm really glad they did it, for a lot of reasons.
Management actually gives a shit about the players!! I know that's like, basic human curtesy, but knowing a huge reason that Kyle Beach went through what he did was because management did not give a single shit about the players and only cared about the cup, it's a huge relief to see Davidson and Richardson being really supportive of the players and making decisions based on what's best for them, not just the hawks overall.
A big purpose of this camp was to allow the prospects to develop off-ice and get to see the city that they're (probably) going to be playing in within a couple years. I mean, they went to a Cubs game, took a boat tour on the Chicago river, took a cooking class, played floor hockey with a local boys and girls club, went to Second City (comedy club), and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. Management isn't hanging them out to dry in that respect, and I am very glad for that.
Player interactions!! The episode was great in that it showed off so much personality, and it didn't just focus on the first-round draft picks, although of course they did get a bit more attention. We got to see a ton of different players doing things and interacting with one another, and it seems like the goal of team bonding was achieved. As Nazar said in the episode, you've got guys from America, Canada, overseas, and it's good that they're able to talk to each other and develop the kind of relationships and camaraderie that's necessary for a winning team (and also just really fun to watch). Sure, some of the players might have been up against each other in their league or in a tournament or maybe have been on the same team, but that's not really conducive to building team chemistry anyways.
Another two big reasons why they took the camp off-ice this year was to avoid causing or exacerbating injuries and to remove the stress of trying to perform well in a short period of time in front of management. I mean, these guys have already been playing hockey for a really long time, and scouts have already been watching and evaluating them, so why have them play high-stress, mostly meaningless hockey and put them at risk of somehow getting injured or making something worse. Yeah, you probably don't run into that many new injuries at dev camp (except for that kid up in Toronto who got a concussion the other day), but if players are trying to prove something to management, they're gonna be a lot more likely to play through something they should probably be leaving alone. It just seems like a better solution to me, and they're still going to be getting ice time in training camp in September.
Even though the camp was off-ice, the players were still doing a ton of conditioning. They boxed, did regular weight room stuff, probably some other things, and they took a class with Oduya on breathing techniques that can be used in a number of different ways. Richardson was directly involved in the boxing, too, which is great for a number of reasons, especially to help player-coach interactions.
Davidson seems to have a huge focus on culture and character, both in determining who he picks and how the players are expected to conduct themselves. There was a session on inclusion, from what I remember, and at the end of the episode, Davidson specifically brings up Moore talking about how the way Bedard carries himself has already affected him and the way he does things. That kind of thing is huge on any team, but I think it really shows that the hawks under Davidson are trying to create a good environment to play hockey and just be a team in, and it makes me really excited for the future of this team.

I put together a little mini-timeline of Will and Mack’s schedules and potential points of contact in 2024 (pre-dev camp) for my own reference when writing fic. Sharing it here because it might be helpful for anyone else trying to wrap their minds around when/how they were talking and what they were doing before dev camp.
I sourced things that might be lesser-known, but did not bother sourcing, like, the day of the draft. We all know where to find that and I’m lazy. You can expect to constantly hear and see Sheng Peng throughout this primer, because he has understood his assignment as the Will/Mack beat reporter from WELL before day one.
April 11 - Mack and BU lose to Denver in the semi-finals of the Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minnesota.
April 13 - Will and BC lose to Denver in the finals of the Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minnesota.
April 19 - Media confirms that Mack is expected to join Team Canada in Czechia for Worlds (source).
April/May ? - At some point, both Will and Mack arrive in Czechia to practice with their respective teams.
May 3 - Mack is named to Team Canada’s 22-man Worlds roster (source).
May 5 - Will (and Ryan Leonard) are officially added to the Team USA roster for Worlds (source).
May 7 - USA plays a pre-tournament game at Worlds.
May 7 - It’s announced that Mack was dropped from the Team Canada Worlds roster to make room for NHL players who are newly out of the playoffs (source). Or at least I think he was dropped because that’s how most articles frame it. However, this one says that he was told he was no longer guaranteed a roster spot but was given the chance to stay with the team, but opted to return to the US for the draft lottery, instead (source).
May 7 - Mack lands in New Jersey on a return flight from Czechia (source).
May 7 - Draft lottery is held at the NHL headquarters in NJ. Mack attends it. The Sharks win the 1st overall pick, Will stays up late in Czechia watching to see if he’s going to be teammates with Macklin Celebrini (consensus #1 pick, though not to the degree of being a Clearly Generational Talent like Sid or McDavid).
May 7 - During a post-lottery interview, Mack gets asked if he knows Will. He says, “Not personally, but obviously I played against him for the last couple years.” Then he gets asked about potentially playing with Will and says, “It would be an amazing opportunity to play with a player like that. What he did this year was pretty special. I’ve seen it for a couple years now, so to be able to play with him, that would be a pretty cool opportunity.” (source)
This video also makes it clear that Mack’s family is still at home in California and that this was a last-minute opportunity to attend after he was dropped from Team Canada. Then, he confirms he’s going to go home to prepare for the combine.
May 8 - Mike Grier confirms to media that the Sharks will pick Celebrini - when asked if they were going to pick Celebrini, he said, "I would think so. He played 200 feet. He's 17 but he's got a really solid build on him already and I think he's got a professional attitude and mentality already. I've talked with (coach) Jay Pandolfo at BU, and he said sometimes they have to kick him off the ice.” (source)
May 8 - Mack confirms to media that he’s aware of the Sharks’ interest in picking him, saying, “Obviously San Jose is an amazing organization. It's pretty cool… Obviously I lived there for a little bit growing up, with my dad with the (Golden State) Warriors (as vice president of player health and performance). They're a great organization. If I'm fortunate enough to get drafted there I'd be very lucky.” (source)
May 23 - USA loses to Czechia at Worlds in the quarterfinals, ending their tournament. Will doesn’t particularly impress during his time at the tournament, held pointless and rarely cracking the 8 minutes of ice time a night. This is not unexpected for a rookie playing limited minutes.
May 26 - NHL.com posts an interview with Will, in which he talks about Mack. He says, “We've had some matchups this year. I think four times. We've definitely seen each other. There's a reason he's going to go No. 1. He's a pretty special player. Obviously, we had some pretty good matchups this year.. Whenever you're on the ice with another player like that you have to keep your eye on him. We were on the ice quite a few times, some shifts together. Definitely we were keeping our eye on each other." (source)
May 28 - Will signs his ELC with the Sharks. When asked about potentially playing with Mack, he said, “Obviously it's a huge opportunity for us. Macklin is projected to go first. If and when he gets picked, that will be pretty awesome to help this team take the next step and obviously get back to where the Sharks were." (source)
May 28 - Will makes his first non-spon con Instagram post since the draft lottery. Mack likes the post, the first post of Will’s that he’s liked.
May 28 - Will gives an interview to NBC Sports Bay Area about signing his ELC, sharing that he’d decided to sign before Worlds. Immediately gets asked about Mack and says, “It’d be fun. Got to see him more than a couple times this year. Obviously, like I said, he’s a great player and he’s a BU guy, but obviously if the Sharks pick him, it would be pretty fun.” (source) Our beautiful boy Sheng Peng tries to get him to talk about it being special to potentially play with Mack, who’s his age, and all he says is, “I mean, yeah, obviously, it’s pretty special that we’re going to make the first overall pick.” Okay, cool girl.
He also gets asked about him and Mack being the centerpiece of the rebuild and says, “Obviously, feels pretty good for people to say that. Obviously, it's a huge opportunity for us, obviously Macklin’s projected to go first and if and when he gets picked that will be pretty awesome to, you know, kind of help the team to take the next step.” And then he says, “obviously, it would be pretty cool to play together, I think we’d be pretty cool together to watch” (attentionwhore4attentionwhore).
Also, hilariously, someone comments on the interview video, “he and celebrini probably hate each other lol.” The average male mind simply can’t comprehend the idea of weirdly DM-ing your college rival that you don’t even technically play on the same team as yet and immediately deciding to be soulmates… god bless!
June 5 - Will posts a thank you/goodbye to BC on Instagram. Mack likes it.
June 7-8 - The 2024 NHL Draft Combine is held in Buffalo, New York. Mack attends and ranks 4th overall at the V02 Max test and in the top 25 in two of the other events (source).
June 7 - During media availability at the 2024 NHL Draft Combine, Mack gets asked about Will, saying, “"It wasn't very fun playing against him. He's a special player. I've played against him for the last three or four years, so I've seen a lot of him. He's a great player, super shifty, super smooth. Every time we went up against them, he lit us up, so you know, he's a great player." (source)
HIlariously, he also refuses to say that the Sharks are for sure drafting him and says he’s “trying not to get too ahead of himself,” like he wasn’t heavy-breathing as he stalked Will’s Instagram (source).
June ? - I think this video is from June 7, too, and it’s definitely from the Combine, but YouTube is bad about exact dates. Our Wonderful and Beloved King Sheng Peng opens an interview with Mack by immediately asking him about Will. Mack confirms that they’ve texted back and forth, which I believe is the first time we get confirmation that they’re in contact of some kind, beyond just throwing each other Instagram likes. Yeah, Mack, you’re definitely not getting ahead of yourself at all, buddy. He also talks for a full minute about playing against Will (source).
June 9 - The NHL flies four prospects to Florida to watch Game 2 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals, including Mack (and everyone’s best friend/first handjob-giver Zeev Buium) (source).
June 10 - Mack attends morning skate and then Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final in Florida, alongside Zeev, Artyom Levshunov, and Cayden Lindstrom.
June 14 - Mack posts dumb Chipotle spon con on Instagram. Will likes the post, the first post of Mack’s that he’s liked.
June 15 - Will posts a photo dump on Instagram that starts with him and Zeev doing shit for Bauer. Mack likes it.
June 20 - Mack posts a photo dump on Instagram. Will likes it.
June ? - At some point, Mack and his family arrive in Las Vegas for the Draft. Mack goes on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast and does a bunch of other media, goes to a Las Vegas youth hockey game with some of the other prospects, etc. This shit is all well-documented on YouTube.
June ? - At some point, WIll arrives in Las Vegas for the Draft. We know he attends because someone got a picture with him there (source), but he is not in any way involved with NHL or Sharks media when he’s there, which is weird. Was he flying under the radar on purpose so he could avoid media shit? Idk.
June ? - In a pre-draft interview, Mack confirms again that he and Will have talked a little bit when asked if he knows any guys on the team. After immediately mentioning Will, he says, "we're trying not to get too ahead of ourselves... if that happens, yeah." Okay. What does that mean in that context, exactly, given that you both know that you're 24 hours away from being teammates? You're trying not to propose to each other yet? (source)
June 28 - The 2024 NHL Draft is held at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Mack gets picked #1 overall. I think we’ve all seen the Mack-focused draft content, but there’s also this long video about a lot of the top prospects, ft. Mack freaking out about robots.
June 29 - Mack posts a bunch of draft pictures on Instagram. Will likes it.
June 30 - Sharks announce their full official 2024 dev camp rosters, including Mack and Will (source).
July 2 - Sharks dev camp officially begins San Jose (source). Also, Mack and Will officially begin whining and complaining constantly about never getting to play together, something that likely seemed funny to coaching staff and fans at the time, given that they were perhaps not yet aware that Mack was going to attack the stars with a hammer until they aligned to let him play with his special boy.
Bonus - July 6 - Mack signs his ELC with the Sharks. Fellas, is it gay to attend three days of dev camp, go full “[met “Will Smith hockey” and got so hard i got nauseous]: i think i hauve Covid,” and then allegedly IMMEDIATELY dump your long-term girlfriend and sign your ELC, after claiming you hadn’t made a decision and were seriously considering returning to college?
Bonus - Will and Mack have liked all of each other’s non-spon con Instagram posts since May 28. Sometimes they even like each other’s spon con (embarrassing). HOWEVER, Will always comments on Mack’s and Mack never seems to comment on Will’s. I don’t think it’s that deep because they’re not that deep, but someone could probably do something with that info!
Officially submitting the following questions for discussion:
WHEN did Mack decide Will was potentially His Guy, after having played against him for years? Do we think it was the Hockey East final? When a guy who looks like Will Smith and plays for your rival college hangs four on you during a total curbstomping… I can see how that might make Mack’s brain start overheating like a car in the Sahara.
WHO initiated the first DM/text contact? My guess is Will because he was playing it too cool when asked about Mack in any pre-draft interviews. Extremely classic behavior of the outward “Yeah I don’t really know don’t think too much about that guy tbh” while simultaneously inwardly trying to fight the urge to find a reason to double text Mack because Mack didn’t respond to his last text (Mack just fell asleep) type. But who knows!
WHEN did they actually meet for the first time? Not, like, see each other at a tournament or a game, but have a conversation? Pre-draft? At the draft? It really couldn’t have been at dev camp, could it have been???
WHAT is wrong with them?

How Many Hockey Players Does It Take To Unscrew a Lightbulb
liked by _quinnhughes, _alexturcotte, and 732 others
"You all really didn't have to come help me pack," Is all I can think to say once I get past the shock of opening my front door to players from the Devils, Ducks, and Canucks. "I- How did you all even know? Let alone get tickets so quick?"
"We're professional hockey players Kid, we have the money for last minute tickets AND the muscles for carrying heavy things into your Uhaul," Is Elias Pettersson's response.
"We're basically the dream team of moving," Is Cole's addition, popping out from behind Nico to give me a hug. Make that four NHL teams represented.
"But you didn't have to all come? I don't have that much stuff and I already had Trev and my brothers."
"Just say you're happy to see us and move over so we can get in," Is Brady's jab, pulling me into a hug before pushing me back into my nearly empty apartment, each boy giving me a hug as they go until the only ones left to enter are my brothers and boyfriend.
"Hey there Kiddo," Quinn greets, pulling me into his side and kissing the top of my head. "You didn't really think we wouldn't call in the army to make this easiest for you."
"Or that we wouldn't be coming with you to Cali to unpack," Jack chimes, holding up three tickets while still in the entry.
"Just the three of us, the other boys are all heading home tomorrow," Lu is the one to comfort, seeing the anxiety in my body rise and making it fall. "It looks like you pretty much have everything packed."
"I do," I agree, looking over the room of boxes, only a few items here and there as the men glance around, most having never seen my apartment before.
"What's left of this place is cute?" Dawson offers, trying his best to compliment what was left. "I'm sure it was even cuter before."
"Thank you Daws, that's a lot nicer than what Jamie was saying the other day," I chirp, the comment directed at said Ducks player who nearly drops the box that he had acquired.
"I didn't mean it like that! All I said was that this place wasn't cute enough for you!" He attempts to defend, looking to Trev for assistance.
"Not to defend his honor or anything, but he did follow it with 'your stuff will look so much cuter in our apartment'," Trev offers, and I can't help but jokingly roll my eyes.
"And this is why he's your one true love," I grumble, the Petey, Q, Jimmy and Mason walking out with boxes in hand, having just taken any old boxes and gotten moving.
"Hey now, you know you're my one true love, baby," Trev assures, moseying up in front of me and pulling me in by my hips, wrapping his arms around me and giving me a peck.
You can hear the groans of the room before you can actually determine who's groan is who's. All I do know is that Jack was definitely the one to say "ew" and Cole absolutely said "oh my poor eyes!"
Drama queens.
"Okay, that's enough of that," Luke is the one to pull me away from Trev, pulling on my hand like he did as a kid.
God when did we all grow up.
Cole, Trevor, my brothers and I. All that we're missing is Alex.
And all my boys made it into the NHL.
And I'm a nurse.
"Hey, don't fall too far in there," Quinn's words pull me out, him and the others having gotten back in the time that I was in my head, Luke having just gently been rubbing my shoulder in the mean time. "Where'd you just disappear to?"
"Just thinking about how much we've all changed since Jack and the boys were in dev camp."
It's a simple answer, but its enough that Q pulls me around the corner into the hallways, leaving Luke behind to lead the continued emptying of where I've lived for two years.
As soon as we're around he's looking in my eyes before pulling me into a hug, tucking me under his chin like he's always done and holding me tight.
"I know change, especially big changes, make your anxiety spike," well he caught me there, "but this is something you've been looking forward to since you were toddling around putting bandaids on us after peewee practice. As much as I hate to say it, you are the most prepared out of any of us to go out into the world."
"Q-" I cut myself off, knowing if I continue I may just cry. "Thank you."
"Hey Mags-a-million, where- oh," Cole pauses, a blush coming to his cheeks at interrupting Quinn's and my sibling bonding moment.
"Uh, yeah, what were you going to ask Coley?" I ask, wiping the few tears that did gather from my waterline.
"I just wanted your permission to move the box that says undergarments. I felt kind of weird doing it without asking and didn't want Trev to kick my ass," He explains, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Cole, it's not like you're digging through my panty drawer," I can't help but laugh, his entire face burning bright red.
Quinn just shakes his head, running his hand through his hair. "I'm pretty sure you made it weirder by asking."
"Why did Mason just tell me that Cole was asking about your under stuff?" Trevor's voice interrupts us once more, taking me from my brothers side and pulling me into his arms, glaring with very little ammunition at Cole. "Back off my woman Caufield."
"See! This is why I asked!" Cole yells, officially having enough of the teasing before glaring at Trev. "You," He emphasizes with a point, "can carry it, jackass," Throwing his hands up to his usual level of dramatics before wandering away.
Trev pecks my forehead, the brightest smile on his face as he leads us after our favorite dramatic.
"I think this is really going well."

connor bedard a devil: devs!player
tagging: @ivy-34, @francesfarhadi, @hzstry8, @cixrosie, @itsnotgray, @estapa94, @trevs-swiftie, @heartz4hischif you want to join the taglist let me know!!
you were in california and jamie had asked you over for dinner with trevor and jack and one of their new teammates. a rookie.
during the dinner, jamie introduced you to mason, a fellow canadian who had just been drafted by the ducks in the 2021 nhl draft.
the three of you spent the dinner tormenting the poor american.
“it was really nice meeting you mason. remember to text me whenever you want and i’ll be there,” you told the young boy, giving him a hug.
and true to the word, mason texted you whenever he needed help, especially as he moved up and down the roster.
by the time world juniors came around, you and mason were best friends on snapchat and had a sixty day streak.
you congratulated him when he was named captain and constructed a regular facetime schedule for mason to gain advice and to rant.
during on of your facetime sessions, you happened to notice a little head walking past ever so often.
“who’s behind you mase?” you asked.
mason turned around and spotted connor giving him a sheepish smile. “that’s just bedsy,” he replied, nonchalantly.
“bedsy?”
“connor bedard,”
you nodded your head in realisation. “hi connor, it’s nice to meet you,” you called to the boy.
connor popped around and said hello. the boy then started animatedly talking about how he looked up to you as an idol. the way you went against all odds and became the first women to get drafted to the nhl.
from that day onwards, whenever you spoke to mason, connor would also be in the room and chime in whenever he felt like it.
but as the competition got cancelled due to covid, you wished the boys luck and gave connor your number with the order to reach out whenever he felt like it.
and he did just that.
as soon as he got back to regina, connor spent any moment he could asking you for advice on how to cope with all the watching eyes.
he’d spoken to mason and kent as well about the advice you’d given them and decided that suffering in silence wasn’t the best option.
summer worlds
when it came to summer worlds, connor had asked if you were willing to come watch. and so you dragged nico with you to meet the bedard boy.
kent saw you first and gave you a hug before calling connor over. the young boy ran to you, lifting you up in your hug.
“hi connor,” you mused.
“hi. thank you for coming,” he whispered.
you squeezed him before stepping back. “of course! neeks and i didn’t have anything planned for this time so we thought why not,” you replied.
throughout the tournament, you spent time with the canadian team, especially connor, the boy followed you and nico to dinner sometimes and had a long standing dinner invitation for when he gets drafted.
nhl draft
connor was nervous.
everyone had hyped him up to go first overall but he saw what happened with shane.
after the draft lottery, you had called him immediately. you asked how he felt about potentially going to chicago and he answered that he was fairly uncertain.
nico had been the one to push against the hawks getting a draft pick that high. but gary bettman didn’t listen.
during the awards, connor came up to you and nico with a shaky breathe.
“i’m kind of scared to go to chicago,” he answered truthfully.
nico put a hand on his shoulder and brought him in for a small hug before handing him off to you. connor wrapped his arms around you first.
“if you want, i can come with you to rookie camp and help you get settled in, but im sure your mum will be there too,” you assured him.
upon thinking of hehe you knew in the organisation, you realised frank and kevin would be at rookie camp. so you informed connor of them and gave him a little advice “everyone’s going to be a little scared so take it and make friends. one of the toughest things for me was i never spoke to anyone during my rookie camp. jack spoke to me a bit but that was all,”
when he heard his name called, he was relieved that he was going to the nhl. he stood up and hugged his family before walking down to find you.
connor pulled you in for a hug and whispered in your ear “thank you for everything,” before walking to wear his jersey.
first game
you made a call to sid.
“y/n, i can’t tell my teammates to stop their defence and let him score,” the older man whined.
“sidney it’s hi first game and he’s nervous!” you emphasised.
sid shook his head. beside him tanger and geno were wearing enormous grins upon hearing your request.
you huffed before thinking of another plan. “well then can you at least be nice to him and let him win a face off?” you asked.
sid chuckled and turned to his two teammates “we will make sure sid let’s him win a face off,” they promised.
majority of the devils team piled in to yours and nico’s living room in order to watch the first game of the season with you.
and they all vowed not to hurt the poor boy. which brendan smith broke

hughes little sister and went second in the 2023 draft and maybe just her brothers realizing how much their sister has grown up and it’s not the little girl who use to hide in their beds when she was scared or would cling to them when they had to leave
oh yes!
she ends up at the ducks with trev (which scares luke and quinn and excites jack) and the boys are so happy for her.
after her draft party, the 4 of them end up in the same room, all semi drunk/tipsy, and cuddling on the same bed like they did when they were kids.
they all just have one big pile of each other and just reminise on their childhood and how much fun they had together. jack says, "remember when quinn ripped off my braces and y/n, you clung to me for days and refused to talk to quinn for like a week."
"i remember. and i remember me and luke always being paired up during mini sticks so you two could beat on us. it's why i became a forward. to be better than you jacky."
"how'd that work out 2nd overall?"
"pretty damn good. we all know it won't matter until games start. as long as my rookie year goes better than yours, i'll call it a win." y/n snides back at jack jokingly.
quinn and luke laugh while jack pouts. luke pulls y/n as close to him as he can. those two were inseperable growing up, being the youngest. luke says quietly to no one in particular, "this is the last time we're gonna be in the same room until next summer."
"no it's not. we have the rest of this trip and the rest of the summer."
"y/n you have dev camp in a few weeks so you'll be gone. i'm going to see dylan and a few of the guys for a few days beofre dad starts training. jack is going to new york to see trev. and quinn is going god knows where. we all have plans for the rest of the summer. and you guys won't be in new york/new jeresy at the same time, ever."
"i guess your right luke." quinn says.
there's a silence over the room that gets broken by y/n, "i'm gonna miss you guys. i wouldn't have gotten where i am and i don't know what i'm gonna do without you guys."
"we're gonna miss you too y/n."
"at least you'll have trevor in anahiema and quinn isn't that fair away and you'll see him 4 times next season." jack says trying to look at the bright side. y/n scoffs, "because having trevor around is supposed to make me feel better? i'll end up babysitting him."
"yea she has a point jacky." quinns says. luke stays quiet not wanting to think about losing his baby sister to the nhl. jack and quinn are the first pass out but y/n and luke can tell that they are both still awake. y/n can also tell that luke is lost in his thoughts.
"penny for your thoughts lukey?"
"i'm not ready to lose you yet. not to the likes of zegras anyways."
"you're not gonna lose me. especially not to trevor. luke, i'm your little sister, i'm always gonna be the biggest thorn in your side and your best friend at the same time. besides, who else am i gonna go to when there's a big spider in my room or who's bed am i gonna hide in during thunderstorms or who's gonna be my first call after my first game? it's gonna be you moose, my big brother who basically my twin. i'm not going anywhere."
"you're going to anahiem."
"i know. but this was the dream luke. we're finally living it. this is a good thing, i know it's sad in the moment but this is a good thing. we're finally living the dream that we've talked about for i don't know how long. we're always gonna have each other and we'll never really lose each other either."
"i know. i just hard seeing you grow up."
"i know. have i told you what number i want in anahiem?"
"no." he shakes shaking his head. she responds softly, "43."
"really?"
"yea. after my big brother, twin flame, and partner in crime."
there's no words said after that. both of them letting their exhaustion consume them. later on that night/early the next morning, ellen pops her head in to check on her kids and see them all cuddling in one bed like the used to when they were little. she snaps a few pictures before leaving them be.
she shows the pictures to jim and gishes about how her babies are all grown up now. jim just says softly, "we did good honey. we did real good. the rest is up to them."
once all the kids wake up, they decide to spend that day as a family and deal with their friends and thte media later. today was about the family and they loved the idea of that.

The girl, so confusing (Rowan's Version)—
Nico Hischier x Angie Chandler au
Disclaimer this is a fake scenario!!! bringing light to some of the background issues that Angie deals with on top of playing hockey and falling in love!!
Au Masterlist!!
Angie's hands gently shook as the tech woman in front of her replaced the battery in her lav mic, a nervous smile on her lips as she thanked the woman who placed a glass of ice water on the coffee table.
The reporter, Molly, an old friend from university who had written a few pieces for the sports section of the school's newspaper and now was a writer for a bigger sports outlet grinned as she sat down on the green couch adjacent to her. "You nervous?" she asked as she reached her hand out for Angie's. "Yeah," her hand fell into Molly's as she took a long breath, "I just wanna put all of this to bed and I don't want to be painted in the wrong light."
Molly's smile softened as she squeezed Angie's hand and then got comfy in her seat, "I understand, and I want everything you share with me to be on your terms," she looked to the camerawoman and gave her the go to start recording.
This was Molly's first ever independent piece as a sports journalist, and she wanted to create a sense of change.
"This issue of pitting women against one another spans so far beyond Hockey culture, it's in the media, it's societal pressure, this ideology surrounds woman players and adds this sort of expectation that for Woman to be successful there must be this added element of pettiness to create narrative and drama. It is all a ploy to make an argument that women create too many issues to be in the 'big leagues'"
Angie was a little taken aback as the story was all laid out for her, multiple interviews from players both past and present, different professors and authors who had dedicated their lives work to this issue, all coming together to highlight this quiet threat to Girlhood culture and woman in sports.
Angie nodded along as Molly ran through her breakthrough piece, a mini-series highlighting the issue of erasing the concept of Girlhood from sports in replace of competition.
"Do you want to say your name and a little bit about yourself?" Angie snapped up a little, one of her hands balled into a tight fist as she looked towards Molly and then the camera, "I'm Evangeline Chandler, number eighteen on the New Jersey Devils"
Molly grinned as she looked through the notes on the queue cards in her hands, "She's being humble, Angie was the first ever Woman to play within the USNTDP, The first woman to attend the NHL Draft Combine, and the first woman to play an entire season and have a consistent spot on an NHL team," the reporter watched as Angoe grew shy at the praise, "a woman of many accomplishments." "Thank you."
"When did all of this start?"
Angie thought back, "It was during dev camp at the beginning of the season. The inaugural draft had just taken place, and one of my closest friends, Taylor, had been selected first." She smiled, thinking back to the day, the phone call after the draft congratulating her, the tears about finally having a place amongst the greats.
"Taylor and I have been through so much together," Angie continued. "We played together in college, and we both had dreams of making it big. When she got drafted first overall, I was over the moon for her. But that's when the media frenzy started." Molly listened intently, her pen poised over her notebook. "What happened next?" "The headlines were brutal," Angie said, her smile fading, "'Rivalry Brews Between Top Female Athletes,' they twisted our friendship into something ugly, something competitive. It wasn't true, but it spread like wildfire."
"How did Taylor react to all of this?" "She was amazing," Angie said, her voice softening, "She called me and said, 'Don't let them get to you," and whatnot, but it was hard. The media made it seem like we were enemies, and that narrative started to spread into our circles. People started asking me if I felt threatened by her success, or if I thought she resented me for being in the NHL."
"It sounds like it created a lot of unnecessary tension." "It did," Angie agreed, "but it also brought us closer in a way. We called all the time to check up on one another, we knew that we had to stick together and show the world that women in sports are not enemies, but allies."
Molly leaned forward and nodded gently, her eyes locking onto Angie's, "So, let's talk about this narrative the tabloids have been pushing. They paint you as some sort of anti-PWHL figure because you're part of the NHL. How does that make you feel?" Angie took a deep breath, her eyes momentarily closing as she gathered her thoughts. "to be really frank, it's frustrating," she began, her voice slowly becoming more confident the less she held up a front and the more she let herself be vulnerable. "I've played with and against many of the girls in the PWHL. They're my friends, my teammates. The media wants to create this drama that doesn't exist. They want to pit us against each other, but that's not the reality."
"Why do you think the media does that?" "Because conflict sells," Angie said bluntly, her voice sharp as she shrugged, "They want a story, and they think this 'catfight' angle will get them clicks and views, at my and other women's expense."
"It's damaging, and not just to me, it hurts every woman in the game. It creates unnecessary rifts and makes it harder for us to just play the game we love." Molly just nodded as she watched this woman finally start to use her voice against all the wrong that has been aimed towards her, "I'm not against the PWHL, and I would never look down on women doing the thing they love. I aspire to be as monumental as these women literally changing the game right in front of our eyes, and I hope they know just how inspiring they are to me and thousands of girls and women who aspire to be as historic as they are."
There was a short pause as Angie gathered her thoughts, the weight of the words she had just spoken settling around her. Molly leaned in slightly, sensing the significance of the moment, "that's powerful," she said softly. "And I think it's important for people to hear that directly from you. But let's go a bit deeper. How has this media narrative affected your relationships with the girls in the PWHL?"
Angie sighed, her shoulders slumping slightly, "It's been really tough. Some of them start to believe the rumours, and it creates this tension that's hard to shake off. I was a 'celebrity coach' at the All-Star game for the PWHL 3-on-3 and it was really hard to enjoy that experience with the girls when the media brought up my name to both me and them saying that I was entitled and looked down on them because I play in a separate league than them. I hope none of them believed it, it made me feel really insecure in my sense of self because these women and that league really do mean the world to me and the thought that they think poorly of me was crushing."
A small smile worked its way onto her face as she thought back to all of her friends who had reached out to talk about the article, all super excited to finally see her supported and clearing their around her and the league as a whole. "But the girls who know me, who really know me, understand that it's all nonsense. They're supportive, and they know we're all in this together."
Molly smiled softly, "That's exactly what I want to highlight in my piece. The solidarity among women in sports, the real stories of friendship and mutual respect. We need to change the narrative." Angie nodded, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I'm glad you're doing this. It's about time someone told the truth."
Molly's eyes sparkled with determination. "And that's exactly what I intend to do. This mini-series is going to shed light on the reality of women in sports, the challenges we face, and the strength we show every day. It's time to tell the real story."
As the interview continued, Angie felt a weight lifting off her shoulders. She spoke candidly about her journey, the highs and lows, and the importance of unity among female athletes. Molly's questions were thoughtful and respectful, allowing Angie to share her truth without fear of being misrepresented.
By the end of the interview, Angie felt a sense of relief and empowerment. She knew that Molly's piece would be a game-changer, not just for her, but it brought a sense of perspective to the game, finally listening to women's voices. It was a step towards breaking down the harmful narratives and building a culture of support and connection.
As they wrapped up, Molly reached out and squeezed Angie's hand once more, "Thank you, Angie. For your honesty and your courage" Angie smiled, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Thank you, for giving me a voice."
The camerawoman signalled that they were done, and Angie let out a long breath. She had done it
