The Iris Nebula is a cloud of dust and gas that is reflecting light from the bright star at the centre. It is actually a small region that happens to be close-by in our stellar neighborhood. The Iris Nebula (NGC7023) Is a bright reflection nebula in the constellation Cepheus. It sits 1300 light years from earth.  A reflection nebula is an interstellar cloud that would normally be a dark nebula if not for some source of illumination.  In the case of the Iris nebula, the flower shape is caused by a +7.4 magnitude star that has been designated as  SAO 19158.  Notice the dark gas blocking the stars in the backround.

Iris Nebula - LBN 487 / NGC 7023 Taken from my backyard in Providence, RI, this target is located in the constellation Cepheus. The central open star cluster (NGC 7023) is surrounded by a reflection nebula (LBN 487). The nebula is lit up by its central star but is also shown to be surrounded by a lot of dark dust, known as dark nebula, which extends far beyond the edges of this image. I didn't know what I was getting into trying to take and process data on this from heavily light polluted skies. When I first shared this reprocess I thought I had only gotten around 4 - 5 hours of data, turns out this is just over 8. I figure to really make this target pop like it is worthy, I'd need to at least double the amount of data if I am to continue shooting it from my current location in the future. This data, taken in June, took me until now to come up with a process that i was content enough with to share. . 161 x 180s (8h 3m) Dark, flat, dark flat, and bias calibration frames 800 ISO - Bortle 8 . So a last minute decision. Here's the end result. Iris nebula. NGC 7023 in Cephus. Skywatcher EQ6. Skywatcher Quattro CF 25cm. QHY8L OSC camera. 80mm shorty + QHY5-ll for guiding. Software - APT and PHD2. 6 x 12 minute exposures plus bias & flats. NO darks. Processing - DeepSkyStacker and Photoshop.
