Mishaps - Chapter 02: Like Shadows

Author’s notes: here is one more chapter of our story! I hope you guys are enjoying!

"And since then, she didn't show up?"

His voice was mixed with the sobs of a female voice coming from the crying girl sat on the other side of his table, trying to dry her tears with an already wet paper towel.

"No. She just vanished. Annie is not like that! She never missed a call of mine, but her cellphone is going straight to the mailbox. First, I thought her phone could be discharged, but not for so long. There are more than three days without a single notice, she doesn't answer her door and the neighbor said she didn't come home that day. I'm so worried! She's my friend... Please, officer..."

"We'll do everything in our power to find your friend, Mrs. Ashford," he interrupted her, warranting they would do the best, trying to give her at least a drop of comfort about the whole situation.

All he wanted was a huge prison like that to make his career and leave that dirty small department and the work with witnesses he hated so bad.

"Man... I would never believe if someone told me this story! A Ragnarsson was going to our coffee shop every day and we didn't even notice? And he was interested in Annie! Oh my gosh!" July exclaimed again and Aethelwulf had to swallow dry to keep the smile in his face.

What in the actual fuck was wrong with the women of that town?

They all looked at the sons of Ragnar as if they were gods or anything like this! Even the women from the police station! How many times he saw the female police officers drooling over magazines with one of them at the cover.

Was he the only one able to see the kind of bastards these people were?

"So, it is the man, right?" he insisted, trying to call July back to the subject.

"Yeah. It is him," she confirmed.

Aethelwulf smiled like a wolf, not being able to hide completely the victory in his smile: finally, he would catch one of them and prove to everyone he wasn't lying or crazy.

The sons of Ragnar were as dangerous as their father once were. And with the right luck, maybe he could force Hvitserk to talk.

Maybe go up on the ladder to put that arrogant, the older of them, Björn Ragnarsson, in his place: behind bars.

"How long since the last time he came?"

Because nobody believed when he said it was Ragnar... He never had a single proof that Ragnar's hands were deeply sunk in your father's blood and everything became even harder when a random bastard confessed the murder of your father, turning everything into a circus to the press and giving the whole credit to another officer who supposedly found the real murderer while he was walking in circles with the rest of the department.

Bullshit!

Aethelwulf knew both of them were being well paid for that stupid theatre: the officer and the bastard. But without concrete proof of what he was saying, it was all this: words.

Years more of investigation trying to build a case against Ragnar for the bastard to be killed in the middle of a trip to England. Aethelwulf was waiting everything would lay on his wife's hands - an alcoholic woman who would surely commit enough mistakes to give him plenty of proofs against that family.

He could still remember how much he screamed in fury when Ragnar's ex-wife killed his widow, fleeing to God knows where...

"You won't start this shit again, Aethelwulf! I have a woman outside of this office who came to talk about her best friend disappearance and left this station confused about why were you asking everything about the Ragnarsson in their coffee shop! You leave this family alone, for God's sake!"

"Why?" Aethelwulf asked, looking straight at his boss' eyes "Just because they're rich, sir? I am telling you for years they have replaced Horik and taken control of their business! Years! Since Ragnar..."

"Since Ragnar, I have to hear this stupidity!" his boss cut him again "You're losing this department resources and time trying to build a case where there is nothing for you to mess with! You're obsessed, Aethelwulf! Enough! I gonna put Heahmund in this girl's case and you gonna take a break!"

"I don't need a break!" Aethelwulf insisted "And she's under my protection since she got into the program!"

"So, you can work alongside him. But your instance is under his and he will be the head! Heahmund is more stable and I know I can trust him. Enough of you trying to find something against the Lothbrok family in every single case we receive in this station! Leave them alone, did you understand me, officer?"

Aethelwulf growled, but there wasn't a choice for him.

"One day you guys will regret to let them work freely," he said, annoyed.

"It is a free country, Aethelwulf! Every man and woman in this place can work freely. And the Lothbroks will keep working freely until someone proves me they're doing anything but transporting containers and filling their asses with five times more money than us, in half of the time and with less than one-third of our work! Their business is legal, Aethelwulf, put this shit into your head. Now go lunch and take the rest of the day off. Go take some air, find someone to fuck, God damn it, boy, take these men out of your head or I'll start thinking your problem is passional. Get outta my face, boy! Now!"

Aethelwulf growled again, in the back of his throat, taking his folders, locking them into his drawer and leaving his office with a frown.

But he was convinced.

Not even his stupid boss or that asshole of his favorite, Heahmund, would prevent him to reach his objectives.

He knew Heahmund wouldn't hear him about Hvitserk's involvement. So, he would use his free time to search and find the connections and then when he could put his hands in that damn Ragnarsson, everyone would have to admit he wasn't wrong.

His steps crossed the newsstand and he saw the business magazines. At least three of them stamped with that blonde bastard...

His fingers took one of them outta the stand and he took a good look in Björn's eyes.

The Smile by BIG in New York has a chequerboard facade and rooftop pool

The Smile by architecture firm BIG is a mixed-use development in New York's Harlem neighbourhood with a stainless-steel facade designed to recall the "textured surface of the moon".

Named for its curved frontage, The Smile at East 126th Street contains a nursing school at ground level and 223 residential apartments above.

A chequerboard facade alternates between blackened stainless-steel panels and full-height glazed windows for the apartments.

On the rooftop, hot tubs, a swimming pool, candy-coloured loungers and lawns have views over the city.

The curving side of the T-shaped building is stepped back from the street and slopes inwards as it rises to maximise daylight for the interiors.

To the south, the building cantilevers over the existing buildings on 125th Street. Viewed from above, the building bends upwards like a drawing of a smile.

The rooftop has a pool and hot tubs

"The facade of The Smile drapes gently between the building's two neighbours and leans inward to allow sunlight and air to reach the street, thus fulfilling the century-old set-back requirements in a new way," said BIG founder Bjarke Ingels.

"Like a good neighbour, it fits into the existing neighbourhood, feeding from the community's energy to add new sparks to the community of East Harlem."

Colourful concrete entryways are designed to echo the bright hues used in the multi-storey artist's murals that adorn the buildings of East Harlem, depicting historic figures and sharing political messages.

One-third of apartments of The Smile, which occupies a historically black neighbourhood, will be reserved as affordable housing.

Steel panels for the facade were manufactured in Germany using a combination of mechanical and chemical finishing to create a durable surface.

"The Smile's facade takes inspiration from the textured surface of the moon, and blends with the black and red brick of the existing buildings in the neighbourhood," said BIG.

Inside, the interiors continue to nod to Harlem's history, with colourful herringbone tiles peppering the floor and a wall of mailboxes behind the reception desk.

"Residents are immersed in an explosion of reds, blues, greens, and yellows, inspired by Harlem's Puerto Rican and Caribbean culture and history," said BIG.

Italian steel kitchen cabinets feature in some apartments

For the apartment interiors, those on the north side of The Smile are decorated in an industrial style with exposed concrete. To the south, the apartments feature exposed steel trusses and kitchen cabinets made from Italian steel.

Amenities for residents include a gym, spa and sauna, and access to a co-working space that overlooks a six-storey gallery in the building.

December 15th, 2020 – The Smile, designed by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, is a mixed-use residential development introducing affordable housing units alongside market rate rentals, set within the vibrant Harlem streetscape.

In 1912, the Equitable Building in Lower Manhattan was designed to be the largest building that could fit its site and rose skywards from the street lot-line without any setbacks. The building has since served as the prime example of the perils of unregulated development and as a result, the first building regulation in the United States was born.

The landmark 1916 Building Zone Resolution enforced the construction of “stepped façade” towers in order to allow light and air back into the streetscapes. BIG’s reinterpretation of the resolution is demonstrated in The Smile with its scalloped façade. Draped between two existing buildings, The Smile gently curves inwards as it rises upwards to bring ample daylight into the residential streets while enlivening and connecting to the lively Harlem neighborhood.

The Smile is BIG’s first collaboration with Blumenfeld Development Group (BDG) to design a 260,000 square foot residential building in Manhattan’s East Harlem neighborhood. Along 126th Street, the building’s facade gently slopes inwards, deviating from the hard, linear street edge in an elegant gesture and forming its namesake curved “smile” in bird’s eye view.

In turn, the curve allows the building form to be contained within the allowable zoning envelope, while giving the residential street more access to direct sunlight. The Smile has 233 units, with one third of the apartments reserved for affordable housing, all designed with a minimal palette of warm wooden interiors, and with access to amenities including a gym, wet spa and sauna, coworking spaces, and rooftop pools.

Conceived as a three pronged “Y” structure stretching between 125th and 126th Streets, The Smile transforms from a traditional block at street level to one side cantilevering over an existing commercial building. The Smile’s unique form allows locals to enjoy and inhabit the space over the commercial offices previously left unbuilt and creates visual connections between the two streets to form a more cohesive neighborhood experience.

“The façade of The Smile drapes gently between the building’s two neighbors and leans inward to allow sunlight and air to reach the street, thus fulfilling the century old set-back requirements in a new way. The Smile’s façade takes inspiration from the textured surface of the moon, and blends with the black and red brick of the existing buildings in the neighborhood. Its windows mirror the same shape of those that characterize Harlem, while the blackened stainless-steel panels were handmade in Germany and produced by a combination of mechanical, chemical, and electro-chemical treatments that, without any lacquer, create a natural and durable surface.

The interlocking panels are all straight yet configured so that each element reflects the sky and light slightly differently, resulting in varying shades of black. The interlocking checkerboard pattern facade panel system allows for floor-to-ceiling windows in each unit, creating exciting views in all directions of the city.

Upon entering The Smile, residents are immersed in an explosion of reds, blues, greens, and yellows, inspired by Harlem’s Puerto Rican and Caribbean culture and history, as well as the neighborhood’s street art and the Graffiti Hall of Fame a few blocks away. The exterior of the building trickles into the interior, with the multicolored mailbox mirrors, the colored tiles, and the wooden furniture shaped to mimic the curve of the building form. The material palette, herringbone tile pattern and sparks of color are carried into the elevator cabs and the upper floor residential lobbies, creating a unified experience that embodies the character of its lively neighborhood.

The Smile’s unique Y-shaped footprint offers a diverse set of unit sizes and layout organizations with three different material palettes. While the exterior facade is blackened and textured stainless steel, the residential unit interiors borrow from a more neutral, minimal palette.

On the North side of the building, units overlooking the Bronx highlight raw, industrial materials with exposed concrete ceilings and columns to showcase the architecture of the building itself. Finishes like exposed steel trusses on the South side units and stainless-steel cabinets made in Italy create a cohesive experience throughout the residence.

The Smile’s collective spaces include a fitness center, lounge and coworking space that overlook the six-story gallery, bringing in natural daylight. In the lounge, a kitchen and pantry allow for catering events or cooking classes, while workstations invite individuals and groups to work from home.

Throughout, BIG and Artemide’s Alphabet Lights further illuminate and shape the experience of the shared spaces through a consistently curved gesture that mimics the building’s external form. The amenities and public spaces also use a combination of colored tiles and blackened steel from the exterior, mixed with the raw materials within the apartment units.

An enclosed, interior gallery space between the existing commercial building on 125th Street and The Smile is topped by a skylight and represents the contrast of old and new between the original brick façade of the neighboring building and the contemporary spaces.

A wet spa of marble penny tiles designed with the same curves as the building, as well as a wooden sauna are unique additions for residents looking to wind down in the privacy of their own building.

Rooftop amenities include four different pools, lounge and deck spaces surrounded by landscape features that shape social areas for various types of gatherings. By including a pool for warmer months, and an additional three whirlpools for cooler months, the rooftop is functional year-round. Residents can enjoy barbecues and dining spaces, as well as a large screening area for outdoor movies and other community events, all with views to Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.

Prior to The Smile, BIG has completed VIA 57 West residence on West 57th Street, a hybrid between the European perimeter block and a traditional Manhattan high-rise with views of the Hudson River.
