Huge congratulations to @TPolamalu for being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame tonight. On the field he was magic. One of those players that would catch your attention even if you knew nothing about football. “Who is that guy with the big hair who is making a huge play on every down?”. Off the field he is a very genuine, truly nice man. I was lucky enough to cross paths with him while shooting a campaign for Head & Shoulders some time ago, and he couldn’t have been more down to earth. On the first day I got to set early and was eating breakfast alone. He came over and said “Can I sit with you? I’m Troy”. No pretense. Just a regular guy, eating breakfast with the rest of the crew. We had a fun shoot with a lot of whacky creative and he was happy to do whatever. I’ve always been a fan and seeing him inducted tonight is a great honor that’s well deserved. Joe Lillard meets Joe Lewis at his training camp in Pompton Lakes, N.J. on December 10, 1935. Two years earlier, on December 3, 1933, Lillard became the last black man to play in the NFL. His sole crime, according to the all white league owners was his refusal to "live, walk, and breath in a manner that did not bespeak supremacy." Lillard, a former star running back at the University of Oregon, would play for a variety of semi-pro teams, including the New York Brown Bombers, a team named after Lewis and coached by the legendary Fritz Pollard, who had been the first black player in league history. For good measure, the "Midnight Express" would also pitch five years in the Negro Leagues. He would retire from professional sports in 1941 and spent his later years working at a sporting goods store. He died in Astoria, Queens on September 18, 1978 after suffering a stroke.
