part one: the standards he holds himself and others to as a pillar.

i) self control and emotional resilience

"do not forget kocho, we are hashira" giyuu criticizes shinobu for being too gentle on yae claiming that they are pillars, meaning that he believes that pillars shouldn't be vulnerable or allow emotions to determine their actions. this predominantly stems from his need to be logical since impulsivity leads to trouble but his past also plays a significant role. emotions were what made giyuu weak for so long. his depression hindered him for years after losing his loved ones so much that he couldn't function. this most definitely is the reason behind his excessively stoic demeanor.

this makes his criticism towards tanjiro for being sensitive more meaningful considering how he wanted him to become the next water pillar. giyuu believed that emotions are a weakness and that a pillar should be capable of controlling them. tanjiro not only wears his heart on his sleeve but he sympathizes with demons too which giyuu dislikes. how could he possibly be someone worthy of being a pillar?

ii) responsibility and protecting people

"whatever happens my core will not waver. we hashira are stronger than everyone else. we are the pillars that support the demon slayers. that is why we must never forget for whom we swing our swords and whom we protect. we can only be hashira because we have someone to be strong for" note that this was when he stopped contemplating whether sparing nezuko was a good idea or not so he was keeping the kamados in mind while reciting that. when he was saying "we can only be hashira because we have someone to be strong for" by someone, he was referring to the kids he helped out and how he sees it as nothing more than a responsibility of his to protect them (your honor. tanjiro and nezuko are his siblings) which is why he stood up for them. giyuu understands what being a pillar truly is about. he became a demon slayer not out of hatred but solely to protect people. his survivor's guilt also influences his mentality due to failing to "protect" his sister and best friend. this shows how despite acting all apathetic, he cares. he really does. the gaiden perfectly proves that.

even though he just told yae a few words and walked away, he still managed to comfort her because he knows that her father's last words (despite being short) will help her out in the long run. giyuu isn't another plain quiet guy, he'll aid others when he feels that they need it. his sentences are short but their impact on others lasts long.

so what can we conclude from this? giyuu has a few core principles which he strictly follows so much, he's willing to practically do anything, even defy authority, if it means that he can abide to them (as seen in the manga) you can even argue that even his guilt is rooted in his ideologies. he refused to consider himself as a pillar even though according to the rules he did pass the selection because it wasn't fair in his own eyes. he ideates suicide and thinks that his death would be a good thing because as he sees it, he robbed his loved ones of their lives. let's return to this panel again.

he doesn't simply say "all demons are bad" but rather "demons who eat humans are bad" meaning that what he detests is living off of the lives of innocent people. this is how giyuu separates good from bad. additionally, this is also the reason he hates himself and believes that he deserves to die because in his eyes, he robbed of them of their lives by living off of their sacrifice and therefore, failing his own ideologies. his guilt and misery are nothing more than punishment which he fully believes that he deserves...

giyuu's idealism (not in a philosophical sense) is an important aspect to his character along with his moral compass (which I will discuss in part two) these parts of him feels so criminally ignored especially considering how his perfectionism is present regardless of what universe he's in. this is the guy who canonically has beef with the board of education and the PTA in another au because of how harsh he and his expectations are on his students.

He's taken the time and liberty of stalking the living HELL out of you and when he found out about your irregular sleep schedule, needless to say he was less than pleased. He realizes you really aren't capable of taking care of yourself which fuels his desire to take care of you even more. He's like a fussy mother hen always concerned and worried for you whenever you get hurt even in the slightest. The other day you accidentally received a paper cut and he was tempted to ensure you stay away from paper completely as he kept fussing about your little cut for hours and hours. He doesn't like seeing you in pain, when you're in pain, he's in pain. He feels like his heart is getting wrenched and someone dug a sharp blade into his heart, as an overwhelming amount of tender love and affections flows for you in his tender heart whenever you get hurt as he comforts you

He loves seeing that bright beautiful smile of yours and wants to ensure your happiness. With him. Where you belong. He'll buy small gifts for you such as your favorite flower, your favorite candy and such and give them to you with a sweet smile on his face, you won't even suspect how long he's stalked you for and how he's managed to find out these things without you ever telling them to him. He's very observant too and notices every single new detail about you. He can probably draw a freaking portrait of you with his eyes closed since he's memorized every inch and every part of your beautiful ethereal heavenly features. HIs mind is occupied with thoughts of you as he dreams about the happy and blissful life you both would have with each other after he brings you home with him and marries you

He's also quite the paranoid yandere, his fear of losing you to someone or losing you in a fight against a demon would send his concern and worry for you into overdrive and he feels the need to take you 'home' as in kidnap you, sooner than expected. Whatever do you want to be a Hashira for? There's no need for you to fight against those dangerous demons when he's around to take care of you and protect you. Your safety is of the utmost importance to him and that is something he will NOT compromise on at any cost. He admires your bravery and strength to save people but he doesn't want you facing the risk of you losing your life in the process. At times he might have to even keep you in the dark regarding a few missions but it's all for your own good in his opinion

He's good at masking his true intentions and feelings when he's around you and other people. He might look calm and friendly and collected on the outside when you're speaking to your so called friends but he's SEETHING inside as he has a fake plastered smile on his face. His hand is just ITCHING to slap your friend and throttle them for daring to steal your attention away from him, he feels like they're doing it deliberately just to drive a wedge and distance you from him. Deep down he's slightly worried that your friend might charm you too much and steal you away from him which is something he cannot allow to happen. He might not resort to killing the person off, but the next time there's a demon around the area, Tanjiro might not be able to save your 'friend' in time. Of course you wouldn't know that he's also asked the demon to TARGET your friend but that's a different story altogether. The only person he trusts to be around you is Nezuko

His love for you is like a passionate growing flame and your every touch is like a drug he can't get enough of. He needs you, he wants you. He needs you in a way like a drowning man needing air, he feels like he wouldn't be able to live without you. His family was killed by Muzan and he can't afford to let you fall in danger as well, he can't lose you. You're his world, the light of his life, his SOULMATE. His feelings for you would just keep getting worse and worse and finally it would lead to him ending up kidnapping you at some point in the night when you're asleep in your house. You'll wake up in Tanjiro's house on a bed with Nezuko looking at you with a curious look as she lets out a happy noise that you're awake and she'll alert her brother. "Oh, good morning darling, how did you sleep?" asked Tanjiro as you stared at him and blinked in disbelief, unable to comprehend what the hell was even going on at the moment. When you asked Tanjiro what was going on, he just let out a soft smile and told you the truth of how he took you in the night for himself and how he was going to protect you. Please don't scream or cry, he'll feel sad and he feels a sharp pang of hurt in his chest to see you upset. He doesn't like seeing you sad. He knows it's a big change and you'll need some time to adjust, he's understanding and willing to let you take as much time as you need to adjust to your new life and your new home with him and his sister. But one thing is for sure, he does NOT feel guilty at all, not even a single ounce of remorse because the way he sees it, he's keeping you safe. He's protecting you, that's what he tells himself every time and that opinion of his clouded his sense of rationality. Is it so wrong to protect someone you love?

There's no point in escaping from him, he'll just track you down and bring you back to the house. Scream, cry and insult him as much as you want, he'll just put you down on the couch and check you for injuries. He feels like the reason you ran away from him is because you didn't feel loved enough from him and he didn't shower you with love before but don't worry, he'll smother you with his affection now and cling to you like moss below a rock you'll barely have any time for yourself. Nezuko might like your head pats and likes hugging you but she wants her brother to be happy too which is why she'll side with him no matter what and prevent any means of you escaping from them. She likes it when you braid her hair and Tanjiro has a soft smile when he sees you and his sister interact with each other which is an adorable scene in his eyes

You're not to step into the kitchen for cooking either, the house is most probably baby proofed as well. He just doesn't want you getting hurt, the kitchen is a dangerous place, he doesn't want you cutting yourself accidentally with one of those sharp knives or burning yourself with the stove. He'll cook for you instead, you don't need to lift a finger when you're with him. Just let him take care of you and spoil you

The Song of Kamado Nezuko sets a scene in bright sunlight.

A matter of danger for both, but a difference in awareness and perspective. While Tanjiro's is aware of all the failure and suffering, it is a constant reminder to persevere in spite of that, with a few glimmers of hope throughout: radiating kindness despite it all, finding that Line of Interval in the worst of situations, and having something to protect--so you must carry on.

Nezuko's song is not so keenly aware of strife; it is a repetition of core values and joys--smiles in the here and now, and a gentle admonition to not be so negative, and to let others be there for you.

Such a good reflection of the mindsets that carried them through the most horrific period of their lives.

I’ll never not mourn that we didn’t get the zenitsu arc that was set up, because I truly believe it would have done wonders for how the fandom views Zenitsu.

It makes me quite angry that he’s dumbed down to nothing more than a pervert and a coward, now. I wouldn’t even go as far to say Zenitsu is a pervert, a coward sure, he even says so himself. But a pervert is someone who purposely creeps on women, tries to feel them up, tries to be a peeping Tom.

Zenitsu does literally none of that, he’s a girl lover/chaser when we meet him, I’ll admit. But he in no way shape or form harasses a woman from the point on where Tanjirou rips him off the woman he’s begging to marry him. After that, he’s very kind to the women he meets, cringe sure, but still polite and respectful,and he’s extremely devoted to Nezuko. Even if she cannot reciprocate, and even then he’s not a fucking creep, he just has a puppy crush on a pretty girl.

So to compare him to someone like, let’s say mineta from MHA, is not only extreme but just plain wrong.

Back to Zenitsu’s cowardice, I think it’s actually pretty cool he’s a coward. We get to see him grow from it, we get to see him learn to be more confident with the support of Tanjirou and Inosuke behind him, the most noticeable moment of this is when he defends the girl that Daki is harming in anger, even if at this point he’s semi aware he’s found the uppermoon, he still steps in front of her and tells her off.

Even during the actual confrontation with Daki, he still tells her she’s wrong, and cruel. And tells her to apologize to the poor girl she hurt.

And Zenitsu is intimately aware of his own flaws, even going as far to say “I hate myself more than anyone else” and listing off that when he’s scared, he freezes or runs. But he also mentions that he’s hurt that Inosuke and Tanjirou just left him at the mountain, he says that if they had tried to coax him, he more than likely would have went. And this claim is 100% supported by the flashbacks we see with Jigoro Kuwajima who was the only character to never give up on Zenitsu and constantly push him to be better and stronger.

If Zenitsu truly wanted to leave the demon slayer corps, he would, now that he’s a full fledged demon slayer and out from under Jigoro’s thumb he had every single opportunity to leave the core and go pursue an actual life outside of it, and yet he doesn’t. Because he wants to make his gramps proud, because he wants to help Tanjirou, because he finds a support system/family with Inosuke and Tanjirou that he’s never had with even Jigoro and Kaigaku.

He’s insecure, he has anxiety, he has anger issues, he wants to honor his mentor and help and protect his friends, he wants to live a happy life, he wants to be respected, he wants to be genuinely loved. He’s so much fucking more than a “pervert” and a coward, but the fandom still sticks to this perception of him because we never got the Zenitsu backstory, I don’t like the term “there’s always a duo in a trio” but at times it really felt like Zenitsu was just kind of there, while Inosuke and Tanjioru continued to get more depth and he didn’t.

Rewatching KNY and seeing Zenitsu again is almost giving me whiplash, because he went from being one of my least favorite characters to one of my most beloved in a flash. It sucks that his defining moments are so frequently interrupted or otherwise disturbed by his obsession with finding a wife, and that it kept me from analyzing him the way I should’ve been doing at the start. Because, at his core, Zenitsu is a lesson on weakness — on learning to live and adapt when you can’t immediately overcome it.

This is evident from his very first appearance, where he’s shown mumbling about his inevitable death and his fear of demons after surviving final selection as one of the five senses (the hearing to Kanao’s sight, Tanjiro’s smell, Inosuke’s touch, and Genya’s taste.) It continues on in his actual introduction in the Tsuzumi Mansion Arc, where he spends the majority of his time crying or in various other states of terror. The two exceptions to this are when he falls asleep for the first time and when he defends Nezuko’s box from Inosuke.

The former is part of a larger discussion on his sleepwalking habit and its impact as a coping mechanism, so I’ll be talking about the latter;

Zenitsu outright says that he has a habit of trusting the wrong people, and that being able to hear their sounds hasn’t done him any good in remedying that. He’s known Tanjiro for maybe a handful of hours at this point, but he throws himself on Nezuko’s box anyway. Not because he likes her (not yet) but because she matters to someone he wants to believe in. For someone who clearly hates being in pain, that says volumes about who he actually is as a person. He might be a coward, but he’s also loyal and self sacrificing.

He earnestly follows behind the people he cares about even when it might get him into trouble. The fact that he’s a demon slayer at all is evidence of that — a testament to his love for Jigoro for believing in him and continuing to believe in him even when he seemed hopeless or tried to run away. There was nothing keeping him attached to the demon slayer corps after his gramps wasn’t there to drag him to the final selection or his missions (and we know from Aoi that he could definitely retire early) but he stays.

He runs and cowers and cries and he keeps moving forward, because his gramps gave him the courage to try again and again after failure;

This, I believe, is the reason behind his sleepwalking habit. It’s a response to his desire to change and grow as a person, manifesting in an unconscious state where he forces himself to shed his terror and pain so that he can actually work at his full potential. It doesn’t just apply to his body either, given that (as the series goes on) his sleepwalking also allows him to access his natural analytical abilities where his panic might have blinded him. He couldn’t get rid of the weakness that hindered him, so he adapted to it;

And then — when he learned what became of Kaigaku and that their shared mentor had given his life in repentance — he finally overcame his cowardice altogether and stopped sleeping;

He beat Kaigaku entirely awake, and he fought Muzan the same way. Being with Jigoro and Tanjiro and Nezuko and Inosuke and everyone else didn’t rid him of his fear, but it did teach him to adapt to and then overcome it. To push it aside to achieve his goals, protecting the people he cares about as more than the human shield he was when he held onto Nezuko’s box and desperately hoped that his body could withstand Inosuke’s abuse. More than that, they also taught him to be more comfortable in his own skin.

I’m not going to say that Zenitsu can’t be an annoying character — I can’t stand his behavior toward women and rather disliked him for the longest time — but he’s much more interesting than his initial impression would have you believe. He’s loyal, protective, self sacrificing, insecure, and surprisingly taciturn when he wants to be. The fact that he sleepwalks for every battle before the final arc and his resolution with Kaigaku really hammers his character themes home, and I find that he’s genuinely interesting to think about!

Allow me to hit you with.. what might be considered to be a hot-take but.. is actually supported by canon evidence and parallels..

It's not yoriichi that shares more parallels with Tanjiro, it's Michikatsu/kokushibo

Now why in the world would I think that? Everyone is always talking about the parallels between nezuko and michikatsu and yoriichi and tanjiro.. I mean tanjiro IS yoriichis successor after all, isn't he? Until a few months ago I never had a mind to question this narrative..

That was until I came across an official illustration book that made me halt in my tracks..

I just had to take a minute to appreciate the artwork featuring kokushibo (for obvious reasons) that is when I realised something..

Let's take a look at yoriichis, kokushibos and tanjiros respective demon slayer marks..

Because surely that can't be..

Oh it is. It very much is. Tanjiros demon slayer mark is NOT like yoriichis. It's like kokushibos. I was willing to let it go before - chalking it up to tanjiros mark perhaps not being fully-fledged out on the illustration (since it does have different visual stages)

But then.. when I was reviewing kokushibos official fanbook page.. I noticed: THIS

'His neck and face have marks resembling flames like tanjiro has'

TANJIRO. Michikatsus demon slayer mark looks like TANJIROS, tanjiros demon slayer mark is a canonical parallel to KOKUSHIBO not. Yoriichi.

And THAT got me thinking about other similarities and parallels that kokushibo and tanjiro could possibly have:

1) Tanjiro is the older sibling. -> Just like michikatsu, tanjiro is the eldest, the one who was to carry forth the legacy of his family JUST LIKE MICHIKATSU. Tanjiros legacy being hinukami kagura, michikatsus legacy being bringing honour to his clan/family

2) hard-working. Neither of them had the supernatural cheat code that yoriichi had (born with the demon slayer mark, breathing was literally already sun breathing, constant access to the see through world, core strength to back up his abilities even as a kid -> the analysis we have kid michikatsu to thank for btw )

Sun breathing DID NOT come natural to tanjiro, he had to work hard and he struggled with adapting it for a long time (during the entertainment district arc he literally has to use a mixture of water and sun breathing because he couldn't handle sun breathing on its own yet) meanwhile michikatsu literally practiced so hard until his hands literally bled. They're both undeniably hard workers who got to the point that they are now through discipline and rigour.

3) both are slapped on the cheek due to their kindness that is considered as weak

Michikatsu: michikatsu was slapped because he was caught playing with yoriichi although their father had explicitly forbidden him from interacting with yoriichi. At that point in time michikatsu also believed his brother to have been deaf so.. the fact that he had still sought yoriichi out despite his father's orders? It is extremely kind of him. He gets punished for his kindness

Tanjiro: tanjiro gets slapped because he fails at killing the demon and the demon ends up dying due to the sun. Urukodaki slaps tanjiro because in his eyes, tanjiros kindness is weak and that he is not fit to become a demon slayer.

Both instances take place at the start of both of their journeys.

4) due to their status as older siblings both kokushibo and tanjiro have a deep sense of responsibility. Not just for their younger siblings (tanjiros care for nezuko is very well-known and kokushibo canonically calls yoriichi one of his 'obligations') but also in general.

5) both are connected to muichiros character development and growth. It is tanjiros eyes that remind muichiro of his father's eyes and tanjiro who returns the light to muichiros eyes as well as his memories.

About tanjiros eyes looking like the eyes of muichiros father? Where do you think muichiros father got those eyes from, hmm? Not yoriichi that's for sure. Yoriichi never had kids. Muichiros fathers eyes look like michikatsus eyes (when michikatsu was just a small child)

It is also kokushibo that connects muichiros recovered memories to muichiros legacy by revealing their relation.

6) tanjiros eyes are subtly expressive and alive... just like michikatsus. Yoriichis eyes are known for their oftentimes empty characteristic and tanjiro wears his heart on his face, especially in his eyes... just how michikatsus/kokushibos feelings can be discerned through his eyes

7) they both keep their respective 'social' circles in line

Tanjiro is often the voice of reason in his chaotic friend group

Just as kokushibo is often the voice of reason/the one keeping things running smoothly and ensuring that the upper moons uphold and respect the hierarchy

8) they are both characterised by how highly adaptive they are in battle and how flexible they are when it comes to changing strategies. Now, yoriichi is obviously very good at this as well but he does this on an intuitive, instinctual level whilst tanjiro and kokushibo consciously execute this.

I could probably come up with even more parallels but I think I have brought my point across, no?
