' aha , well ... ' how to say that his life was always like this ? one way or another chaos constantly unfolded around him ; sometimes even because of him , whether he was the trouble-making source or just collateral victim . everything was always happening so much all the time . a part of him still feels reluctant to accept the sweets , but it might have been less trouble to try to be obedient , right ? somewhat nervously , he opens the bag ... no going back , now .
if he had any uncertainties then they seem to wash away with the bright taste of strong sugar . it's good , good enough that his eyes shut and his head leans backwards for just a moment as he savors the taste . his nerves settle ; either he can't , or just didn't want to think about anything else . ' u-um , well ... ' he swallows once he's finished with his meek bites . ' ahem , burying it would be a good idea , b-but ... er , ' saying that his family was one comprised completely of criminals who probably would've had a better way of disposing was a little ... extreme , right ?
' i mean , it's not actually the gun that's much trouble ! it's just --- p-people looking and seeing it and stuff , ' ahh , this was hard to explain , after all ! ' er , what no , what i meant to say is , there's no trouble at all ! my mom or my dad --- i should probably ask them what to do with it instead of trying to hide it . thank you for the food , though ... you're sure you don't want to share half , since they were yours from the start ? i really do feel a lot better now , at least . "There's really no need to apologize!" Reassures him with a quick wave of her arm. "You just seem to be going through a lot right now!" She gestures to the bag of donuts. "Eat a little first, perhaps it can help you calm down?" Her knowledge of guns was very limited but she knew enough to know that they were very dangerous weapons! She can't say she fully understands what's going on but she's doing her best not to make assumptions and jump to conclusions.
Things never tended to end well for her when she jumped to conclusions, so Neya will just keep her thoughts to herself regarding this gun situation. Instead, she's here to offer judgement-free support.

"Do you need some help getting rid of it? I think... burying it somewhere deep underground would be a good solution, right?"

Novel Battle
Last month I did a roundup of books I read, and it looks like I managed to do it again this month, woot. It's not quite the end of the month yet, but there's only day left in December 2023 and I don't think I'll be getting anything else finished this month (and I finished my 100 books on Goodreads), so I might as well do it now. (I have been trying to not leave it all to the last minute, writing bits of it during the month, which may be an effective strategy.)
Actual books under the cut--possible spoilers for Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series, Michelle West's House War series, and maybe C.J. Cherryh's Atevi series, though I'm trying not to.
Michelle West: Battle, completed December 6
This is a slot for a female (or non-male) "diversity" slot author. It almost feels a bit cheating for me to use the slot for Michelle West (a.k.a. Michelle Sagara), who I've been reading for a long time now, and is somebody I'd read anyway, but her books are pretty thick and I have a tendency to fall behind on them, so I'll take whatever will get me to actually read them.
Back when I first read Michelle Sagara, I was heavily into Canadian SF and wanted to read everything that was eligible for the Aurora Awards every year, if possible. (It soon became clear that it was not, for all practical purposes, possible.) So I saw her on the list with her first series, The Sundered, and read them all. It's a series where the good guys lose at the end of the first book, and our protagonist ends up imprisoned by a demon lord type who is also her main romantic interest. This kind of dynamic has turned up a few times in her other books, to some degree or another. Later she came out with the Sun Sword series under the name Michelle West, a series of six quite thick books. (And, it turns out, there had been a previous duology, Hunter's Oath and Hunter's Death, set in the same world and featuring some of the same characters.) And after that, she started coming out with her Elantra series (a.k.a. the "Cast" series, since the titles are all like Cast In Shadow or Cast In Courtlight etc.), again under the Sagara name; slightly lighter, and thinner, fantasy novels featuring a guardswoman named Kaylin Neya living in a multiracial fantasy city (and by multiracial, we have like hawk people, lion people, dragons, elf-types, and telepaths, and probably others I'm forgetting). And after that, she started coming out with the House War series, which was designed to tie up some loose ends from the Sun Sword series. (She's also got another series, a YA-ish urban fantasy series called "Queen of The Dead", but I haven't tried those yet.)
So at the moment I'm reading both the Elantra series and the House War series; I try to get through one of each a year so that maybe I won't fall further behind. Battle is, as one might guess, in the House War series, which, as a series, is a bit odd. The first three books in the series are really their own trilogy, since they take place before The Sun Sword entirely (and one of them overlaps with Hunter's Death). And then comes Skirmish, which takes place after The Sun Sword, and continues on with Battle, Firstborn, Oracle, and War. (Firstborn and Oracle were not part of the original series listing, so I assume that the series stretched as she was writing it.)
The central character of the House War is Jewel Markess ATerafin, who I believe was introduced all the way back in Hunter's Oath and may have been in all of the Michelle West books to date. She started out as a street kid, leader of a "den" of orphans and homeless kids, until she gained the attention of the powerful House Terafin, and managed to win entry for herself and her den; later it turned out that she was a rare "seer-born", and she grew in power and influence. She is a fundamentally nice person, though, who would be happy if everybody just got along and nobody got hurt, so she's not comfortable wielding her power--something she may have to overcome by the end of the series, I suspect. (And, unlike some of Sagara/West's characters, she seems deeply aromantic-coded. Not even a hint of romantic feelings in any of the books to date.) Also, in these books it seems like any random character can turn out to be a retired assassin with a dark past, or a troubled immortal, or a secret mage, or some other such archetype. It works better than it has a right to.
So what is the House War? That's a good question. It's not, fundamentally, a struggle within House Terafin, or between any of the Ten Houses, at least as of yet. It seems more like a struggle of House Terafin, or all of human civilization, against outside forces, quite frankly. Battle has relatively little battle in it, in fact; it still feels like we're readying for the battles to come.
I've started supporting the author on Patreon, mostly because she was working on a new book in this world, Hunter's Redoubt, which the publishers passed on (possibly because she couldn't guarantee it being a reasonable length, or maybe the series just wasn't selling well enough for them), and I've only got three more House War books after this one, so probably by 2027 I'll get to reading it.
Ian Fleming: For Your Eyes Only, completed December 8
Feeling a little behind on my Goodreads challenge after the length of Battle, I decided to scan my shelves for something somewhat shorter, and less fantasy. And Ian Fleming is what I came up with.
I remember James Bond from an early age, between the HBO we (probably illicitly) had when I was a kid, and the promotion for the movie "For Your Eyes Only" (including the Sheena Easton song and the Marvel comics adaptation). These days "FYEO" is considered a lesser entry in the Bond canon, but I have a soft spot for it. I watched and rewatched a lot of the movies over the years, and at some point I started reading the original novels. They're not bad, though of course a product of a different time with all sorts of deeply-ingrained sexism (and probably racism too).
For Your Eyes Only the book is actually a collection of short stories. The first one, "From A View To A Kill", is perhaps the best, a straightforward but engaging story of Bond outwitting an embedded spy nest in France. (Little or nothing in common with the "A View To A Kill" movie.) The title story and "Risico" are the two that the "For Your Eyes Only" movie was built around--the former a story of an off-the-books mission where Bond avenges a pair of M's old friends (with the aid of their bereaved archer daughter, who became Melina in the movie), and the latter being the story of double agent Kristatos trying to set Bond against rival Colombo; the stories themselves are pretty good. Then there's "Quantum of Solace", which also has nothing to do with the later movie, and hardly anything to do with James Bond, being mostly a story told to Bond about a relationship that went sour, and "The Hildebrand Rarity", which oddly didn't get any movies named after it, about a horrible person who comes to a bad end on a boat on the Indian Ocean, and good riddance. While uneven, it was actually a bit refreshing to see Bond in different contexts and shorter pieces.
Jim Butcher: Warriorborn, completed December 9
Next, I wanted another male author, and still probably a shorter book. The Olympian Affair, the latest Jim Butcher novel, had just come out, and was devoured by several members of the household; this e-novella was kind of a precursor to it, and my wife had recommended I read it, and I decided it might be just the thing.
I have a read a lot of Jim Butcher--almost all of the Dresden Files (saving only a few of the more recent stories), the Codex Alera, and The Aeronaut's Windlass, the first Cinder Spires book (to which The Olympian Affair is the sequel). It's been some time since his last novel, Battle Ground, and quite frankly, that one left a really bad taste in my mouth. A lot of that was due to a particular character death which I really did not appreciate, but I can't tell if it's just that or if I've gone off him completely. So I have deliberately been avoiding the last few Dresden Files stories, and I wasn't sure if I was going to read any more at all, so I guess this was also a way of giving him another chance.
I apparently didn't remember The Aeronaut's Windlass that well, because I did not remember the main character of the story, or the whole Warriorborn class at all (they seem to be humanoid but part cat or something?). I remembered actual intelligent cat characters, but not these guys. Anyway, there was a story, it was mildly exciting, and it only took me a day to read it. I'm still not sure if Butcher has redeemed himself, but I did put The Olympian Affair on my to-read list, even if I probably won't actually read it any time soon. He may not be "don't read ever again", but he hasn't earned his way back up to "read as soon as the hardcover comes out" yet by a long shot.
Lois McMaster Bujold: Ethan of Athos, completed December 12
Three books since my last reread, so it was time for another one, the next (chronological) Vorkosigan book, Ethan of Athos. It's an odd duck in the series--no Vorkosigans appear in it at all, but we do get Elli Quinn, last seen getting sent off for extensive facial reconstruction surgery in The Warrior's Apprentice, in which she had barely any screen time. The book's POV character, though, is the titular Ethan, from the planet Athos, a planet of a reclusive misogynistic society that bans women entirely and reproduces entirely through uterine replicators and ovarian cultures. But when the ovarian cultures start senescing, and their replacement shipment is hijacked, Ethan is forced to head into the big bad woman-infested galaxy and try to remedy the problem. Which brings him into contact and/or conflict with Elli Quinn, Cetagandans, and other forces. And ends up broadening his worldview ever so slightly, though he does return home at the end…with perhaps the biggest dangling plot thread that never got revisited in the entire series. I was lukewarm about it my first time through, but by now I consider it pretty fun, but inessential. It does give you a chance to see Elli as a full-fledged character before you see her back with Miles again.
Cecilia Dart-Thornton: The Ill-Made Mute, completed December 18
After three short reads in a row, I was now ahead again. It was time for another female author, and for "trying out" one I hadn't read before. When I'd first started doing this, I limited it strictly to authors where I'd picked up one book at random and that was it, but I later broadened it to include other authors, particularly ones where I'd picked up two books by them and not yet read either. And the one I happened to have sitting on my shelf was Cecilia Dart-Thornton's The Ill-Made Mute, which was both an interesting author name and an interesting book title.
It's an odd book in a lot of ways. The language is…well, you could say "rich", you could say "not afraid of using obscure vocabulary words". The setting is interesting--there's a metal that floats above the ground (not unlike something that they have in the Cinder Spires, actually), and some people use it to travel by floating ship or floating horse…which makes sense once you find out how dangerous overland travel is, because of all the wights (a.k.a. fairy folk, seelie and unseelie, many of which seem to be drawn from actual Celtic folklore, given the extensive references at the back).
Our protagonist is the mute of the title--stripped of their memory, speech, and name, disfigured by accident, and receiving only grudging kindness by their rescuers. Could be a more proactive character than they are, since they spend a lot of the time at the mercy of more powerful forces (and many capricious wights), but you do root for them to come through.
It turns out, by the way, that the other book in the series which I own, The Battle of Evernight, is the third book, not the second, so I guess I need to track down a copy of The Lady of The Sorrows sometime. Sigh.
C.J. Cherryh & Jane Fancher: Defiance, completed December 22
I only had three books left to read for the year, and 13 days to do it in, so I still seemed more or less on track, but maybe a shorter book would not go amiss--especially since we were planning to go out of town on the 23rd, something that I could finish by the 22nd might be a good idea. Female author still, and not high fantasy.
I often like to let books sit on my to-read shelf for a while; or, to put it another way, to not neglect forever the books that have been sitting there for a long time in favour of newer and shinier ones. But there are exceptions, for authors that I've read a lot of and am actually caught up on, where I try to keep caught up by reading their newest books.
I've been reading C.J. Cherryh for a long time--I started with her Morgaine books, after seeing her mentioned in Dragon magazine, and went through whatever I could find--Cuckoo's Egg, Serpent's Reach, the Faded Sun books, the Chanur books, etc. I fell behind for a long time, but the Atevi books (starting with Foreigner) helped, because I started reading them to my son. They're not kids' books, but he was a teenager when I read them to him so that was okay. (If it bothers you to think of a teenager still being read to by his parents, think of it as a "parental audiobook experience".) I had gotten about twelve books in on my own, but even restarting from the beginning, I was able to plow through the series (up to at least book 20) reading them aloud. (By this point he can read them on his own if he wants to, though.)
This is book 22 in the series, and while it seems to be starting out with recap (which was less useful when reading them back-to-back, but helpful now) it's probably not a recommended starting point. The length of the series is a tribute to the complex political situations that our characters get involved in, and she's probably not in danger of running out. This is her second novel, and first Atevi novel, crediting her longtime companion Jane Fancher as a cowriter, probably for reasons.
The Atevi series in general takes place on (mostly) a planet inhabited by a species called atevi, where a group of humans were forced to settle after a hyperspace accident left them unable to return home. After some initial friction, they are coexisting mostly peacefully, with one human (called a "paidhi") as a cultural interface. The current paidhi, Bren Cameron, ends up getting involved more deeply than usual in atevi politics, which is all I'll say in lieu of spoilers.
Josiah Bancroft: Arm of The Sphinx, completed December 27
I also picked this one largely on page count--I was planning on reading it in 5-6 days, which would cover the days when I was visiting my mother for Christmas. In a slight deviation from my normal tactic, I ended up allocating reading pages so that the two travel days (it usually takes us about six hours to do the drive) required fewer pages, and it worked pretty well.
The first book in the series, Senlin Ascends, involved Thomas Senlin and his young wife travelling to the Tower of Babel, the wife getting abducted, and Senlin going into the tower after her. The details of the world aren't particularly clear--there is a Tower of Babel but there's also steampunk technology and people with European names, and there's no map of anything besides the Tower itself so I don't worry about it too much.
In this book, the second, we have more an ensemble cast rather than just Senlin, and I think the change is quite effective. Senlin is a reserved gentleman thrust into unfamiliar situations, and sometimes he's a little bit repressed, so having more viewpoints was helpful. Plus it allows us, the reader, to learn things without Senlin necessarily learning those things as well.
I'm hoping that we'll shift our plot from "Senlin looking for his wife" to something with slightly larger stakes about the fate of the Tower itself, and the world. Because it's beginning to seem like Senlin and his wife may not have the most successful, loving reunion. We haven't seen much of her at all, really, and I hope that when we do, she'll have a stronger character than just "damsel in distress".
There's two more books in the series, which of course may be out of print by this point, but I think the odds of my finishing the series at all have definitely gone up.
Lois McMaster Bujold: Borders of Infinity, completed December 30
And then it was time for another read, another Vorkosigan book, whose placement may be a little bit controversial. It consists of three novellas, the first of which, "The Mountains of Mourning", takes place between The Warrior's Apprentice and The Vor Game. The others do take place between Ethan of Athos and Brothers In Arms, but in this book there's also a framing story that takes place after Brothers In Arms. (In the more recent omnibus editions the novellas are rearranged, and the framing story disappears entirely. There's not much to it, so it's not a huge loss.) But there's no spoilers from BIA, it turns out (Miles is in the hospital with broken arms from an unchronicles adventure that happens after BIA, and while its events are alluded to, all that really comes up is that they were on Earth). BIA in fact takes place directly after "Borders of Infinity".
"Mountains of Morning" is probably the most affecting of the three novellas, as Miles has to investigate the murder of a baby in the backwoods of his district, with characters that show up again in Memory. "Labyrinth" is my least favourite of the three, though it's still good. It is the most novel-structured of them, with subplots and multiple settings, and its events serve as setup for the events on Jackson's Whole later in Mirror Dance. "Borders of Infinity" is a tour de force showing how Miles can accomplish his goals after stripped of pretty much everything, and also a good example of how to hide things from the reader that your viewpoint characters knows.
And that's December, and the end of 2023. Next up it will be a book from my dwindling supply of male "diversity" authors, Siege of Mithila by Indian author Ashok Banker. I also got a copy of the nonfiction book Paths of Pollen, written by my very own brother, that came out a month ago.

Sitting directly across from Daisuke with her legs tucked beneath her, Neya’s mouth is twisted down in a pout. “Man, you’re really good at this Niwa-san!”After talking him into teaching her to play some modern day games, she’s come to slightly regret her decision to ask him to show her how to play Hanafuda. Only because she’s losing of course, but she’s still enjoying herself!
He’s got about 6 sets matched while she’s got 1 and a half of a set. It’s a little discouraging but she’s not ready to call it quits. There’s a fire of determination gleaming in her eyes even as she decides to discard one of the cards from her hand and place it in the middle since she couldn’t get a match. “But it’s still early, so don't count me out just yet!”
@bxtonpxss
Tumblr media
' ahaha ... ' ( --- whoops . busted . )
should they have tried playing something else instead ? the pout on neya's face ends up met by daisuke's own anxious smile and laughter attempting to appease it --- he didn't want to end up hated over something like a card game , but it was already too late ... if he started throwing down poor hands in order to try to let her win now , then neya probably would have noticed the catastrophic difference in his plays and felt her inflamed pride all the more wounded for it .
' i don't think i'm that good , really --- and besides , muito-san's only just started learning , and i'm ... um , getting lucky --- ? things like this don't usually happen ... ' this , at the very least , was a truth . the rules of hanafuda had been kindly taught to him by his grandfather , who had likewise been the same fearsome opponent that would both calmly and shrewdly destroy his far more inexperienced grandson one completed set at a time . even playing with dark attempting to guide him seemed an unfair advantage of sorts !
( i'd hate to make neya-chan cry , but it's not fair if we go too easy on her either , right ? ... besides , i really like the look she's got in her eyes right now . ) the sort of shining ferocity that wouldn't have given up so easily --- just one peek into them made daisuke feel like there wasn't anything to do but to see things through all the way to the end .
' if you're really okay with everything , then ... ' he glances across the stretch of cards before collecting a set of flowers , setting the small pictures down with an equally small smile . ' ... i'm happy too . ' ( something like this is fun every once in a while . the company's way better than those shady gambler types , too ! )

Tales of Festival Saturday Summary - 03
When asked if she remembered any cool lines from Asch, Neya said that he went 'TCH'.
As the Abyss party reminisce, Suzuken bemoans that they only talked about miso soup. "So this is Abyss, huh..."
Abyss: Asch's battle
In which we got to see Asch send Luke on and l actually cried TTwTT
Onosaka says that every time, the scenes shown for Abyss are so cool. But because SukiChi is always saying 'ORE WA WARUKUNEE' the gap is really big.
Abyss showed a second scene: A Confession That Didn't Reach
In which Luke sends the party away and they insist that he promises to come back to them alive.
The Zestiria team was last, and Kimura spoke about how he played Symphonia and Abyss, so he had nostalgic feelings about the scenes showed. Suzuken was high key staring at him for that HAHAHA
Kimura explained that they recorded the entire main story before moving on to the skits and subevents that were scattered through the plot.
Fukuen said that she didn't have that many lines in the main story, but that she did great things on the skits.
Suzuken: So you're a Skitter.
Zestiria: Kamui with Mikleo
In the water ruins where Melody of Water plays <3</p>
Suzuken: Fukuen didn't talk in that!
Fukuen: Because l'm a Skitter.
Next was the Tales of Entertainment News, hosted by Nagoshi Ryou (l think?). All the major news websites have already released them by then so l won't list them.
They move on to a game corner with the host, SukiChi, Konitan and Fukuen, to win rewards for the mobile games Rays, Asteria and Ancast.
They had to throw red balls at an enemy Otaota, reprsented by an Otaota basket on a long stick. The number of balls they got in within one minute would determine the level of rewards given.
Rays' rewards included 100 diamonds, a pair of Penlight Sabers for Lloyd, and the Viva Ticket, which gives one confirmed makyo summon.
SukiChi dashes his script onto the floor dramatically to show how ready he is to play, and the other two follow suit. But the moment the timer starts, Konitan grabs the entire otaota stick and lowers it, enabling SukiChi and Fukuen to simply put the balls in the basket.
They get all the balls in, and Nagoshi tries to make a pretence of counting them, but the seiyuu tell her it's okay to just say they won.
Next segment shows the first episode of Tales of Homeroom, a chibi style anime to be aired on Asobi store's premium account.
Ep 01:
Laphicet's compass breaks. He is injured, and other Tales characters are collapsed around him.
Velvet, with glowing red eyes and her therion arm, attacks.
Laphicet suddenly opens his eyes, as if waking from a dream. He is dressed in his school uniform, standing in school.
Yuri suddenly appears from over the wall. He is trying to skip class, and Flynn is chasing him. The two run circles around Laphicet, and Yuri tries to use him as a shield.
Yuri: I know. Skipping school is a crime.
Flynn: Even so, you intend to go ahead with your choice?
(Close up of Yuri and Flynn grappling with each other, in proper proportions instead of chibi. ThefanserviceisstrongLOL)
Yuri: Intend to? I already have.
The two get into a fight, and poor Laphicet is crouched nearby with his hands over his head. Velvet suddenly appears.
"What are you doing to Phi!" She uses her therion arm, sending Yuri and Flynn flying off.
Velvet holds out her hand to Laphicet. Remembering the dream from earlier, he hesitates. When she asks what's wrong, Laphicet shakes his head and allows her to help him up.
As they walk on, Edna and Mikleo are watching them from above. They comment on Velvet being the famed problem transfer student. Edna describes how, when Phi was picked on by Zagi, Hasta and Lunarre, Velvet dived in to beat them up. And when Laphicet was queuing for food, the same three cut his queue. Velvet again appears to attack them.
Edna says that Laphicet is the reason behind it all, so if they recruit him to the student council, Velvet would stop rampaging and peace would reign. Mikleo questions if it'll.be that simple, and Edna pokes him with her parasol.
The episode ends there. The Normin Dance has been adapted as the ED song. Edna sings, Milla is on the keys, Velvet on the snare drum, Laphicet the recorder, Ludger a tambourine, while Mikleo is in the middle dancing.
The next segment is about the Tales of Tour, a 3 day event where attendees spent time in Okinawa with Onosaka, Konitan, Takepon, Iwata and Arai. The video opens with an obvious Marvel film opening parody, where comic strips flash across the screen xD
Videos and images from the tour are showed, and they announce a second Tales of Tour.
They also announce a collab with Yakatabune, a Japanese style wooden boat tour. Ludger, Velvet and Senel will likely be guests or hosts (hence the yukata costumes).
Finally, they announce Tales of Orchestra for the year, with a new key visual.
And next up is the musical segment with Shiina Go.
(Note: l'll post Shiina Go's performance description separately, because l got a bit carried away with the music stuff. Skipping ahead to the talk with Shiina-san)
Shiina-san kept forgetting to speak into the mic, though they'd already told him during rehearsal to take note of it.
Shiina-san was worried about matching the tempo of the seiyuu.
Shiina-san: Life is a gamble
Onosaka: That sounds so cool
(He looked really cool too l'm just saying)
Shiina-san is currently working on Code Vein and doing music for cooking shows. He spoke a little about Chasing Shirley, with its high tempo, sharp sound, hysterical feel of being chased.

“Nobody fights with Zivi Noreth and wins,” The girl laughed, “Not even Zivi Errol,”
“Shh!” Another one spoke up, “They say that he has ears everywhere!” She looked at Neya suspiciously.
Neya had just covinced her father to let her marry someone else other than the choice he made for her so she looks around and spoke to herself. "Woah this place is beautiful
Yiviria came down to meet her. She knew that Aradir wasn’t happy with the latest turn of events but he had always been the type to put others before himself, much to everyone’s annoyance.
“Welcome, Aetgery,” She greeted her, wondering what the girl had been told of Avran, “I’m Naqa Aayikan and I run the army here, but you can call me Yiviria. I’ll show you to your room. How many people have you brought with you?”

Petra - Coffee Shops are Liminal Spaces
He was there again, and it was seriously messing with her day. Again. Petra scowled at her laptop screen, and shifted in the hard wooden seat of the coffee shop. Who gave him permission to exist during her lunch break? Seriously? She had to talk to someone about that, because he was a distraction while she tried to get even more work done.
Not that she had a problem with workaholic-ism. Not at all. That would be patently ridiculous, but Stefan had insisted she get out of the lab - and that was a perfect time to do some independant research on compounds.
And here was this asshole with his stupid trendy undercut (and platinum hair! Really. Some people would just do anything to be trendy wouldn't they) and his stupid laugh. Petra knew she'd already griped at Astrid enough about his existence in the last week. But this was just too much.
Her coffee was getting cold and who gave him permission to be so handsome? She was supposed to be the highlight of this coffee shop's day, dammit.
"Stupid glare," she muttered, just in case anyone was listening, and moved her laptop to face the other way on the table, switching seats so her back was to the bastard. Better. Much better and she hadn't looked insane in the process. A quick adjustment of her screen, and she resumed reading a study that had been completed over in Germany last year regarding the conversion of plastic bottles into renewable energy. Two fingers - perfectly manicured nails included, thank you - scrolled down on the trackpad as she got invested in her research. She shifted, grabbing her now-cold coffee to sip and-
"Are you fucking serious." She scowls at her screen.
Maybe she said that a touch loud. Oh fucking well, because that stupid asshole was now reflected in her screen thanks to her inversion extension making the screen dark. His stupid face, in all its glory, reflected right on top of work.
The cafe grew quiet for a minute, like everyone was watching her for an outburst. Well she wouldn't give it to them, dammit!
Stefan would just have to deal with her getting back to work a little early. She couldn't focus with this type of environment.
The laptop didn't appreciate the way she slammed the lid closed, shoved it into her bag, and went up to the counter for another coffee, this one to go. Ignoring the way she was so aware of the grey-haired prick over her shoulder the entire time. This was her coffee shop and she would make sure he knew that before he started getting cozy with Neya, the sweet barista.
---
Stefan was smiling at his phone when she arrived back at the lab. Something about that didn't seem fair - her lunch break had been ruined, what gave him the right-
But it was that gentle, adoring smile that she'd caught him with before, and there wasn't a touch of consternation to it, which meant that he was reading a text from Joel and not from Carina. She decided not to crash on his good mood, because she was just so nice and such a romantic. "Hey Professor. Sorry, I'm coming back early. Lunch sucked."
Stefan startled easily. She'd almost imagine him as a mouse or something, with the wide eyes blinking at her, the way he nearly fumbled his phone. It was a wonder, really, that his phone was still in one piece. Maybe it wasn't - whatever Joel did for a living, it paid well, and maybe Stefan was just going through a steady stream of repairs. She could imagine that. "Petra! Hi, how was- wait, what happened? What's wrong?"
And this was why she liked working with him. Just like that, instant Dad mode that was endearing and not really annoying. "Oh, nothing big. Just some self-centered jerk at the coffee shop I like." A roll of her shoulders. Briefly, she wondered if maybe it was unfair of her to characterize a stranger she'd never spoken to like that but - well, really. Noone asked him to be stupidly distracting.
Stefan blinked and frowned worriedly, coming over. "Is everything okay? He didn't say-"
"Nope. Nothing to get worked up over, really," she smiled quickly. Not about to own up to exactly what hadn't happened. Stupid handsome guy anyway.
"Maybe you could talk to the owner, though. If it becomes a problem, anyway..."
"Yeah. Maybe..." Or maybe she could just change her lunch hour. Surely he wouldn't be there at all hours and-
---
He had inconsistent lunch hours. Just her luck.
For the past two weeks, it's been a fifty-fifty shot that he'd be at the cafe for at least a portion of her lunch break. She was over it, and Stefan seemed to be getting a kick out of it once he'd gotten to the root of the issue.
(Which had, basically, been when he'd asked for specifics of what this gentleman at the cafe had actually done or said.
Silence had reigned for a moment while she tried to think.
Stefan had, bless his heart, waited patiently.
"Well he has this really stupid laugh when he's chumming it up with Neya. Neya of all people!" A traitor to the cause! That had been a grevious insult indeed.
"....So he hasn't actually done anything?"
"His existence is enough. He's stupidly handsome. The type of handsome that gets away with shit. I don't trust him."
"Okay, Petra." Stefan had said, and left it alone, but she wasn't so blind that she couldn't see the amusement in the corners of his lips.)
She wasn't about to surrender the only coffee shop that had managed to understand her when she asked for just the right amount of sugar though. She wouldn't let that bastard win, dammit.
The apartment downstairs from her had obviously messed up dinner, whatever dinner was supposed to be for them. She got home at about six, to an apartment full of smoke and the smell of burnt fish. Fan-freaking-tastic.
She knew which apartment, too! They were always burning shit, and she almost wanted to tell building management about it, but that was too much energy by the time she got home, so she huffed and strode into the living room. The blinds rattled as they opened, and the window took her throwing her whole weight into it in order to open, but open it did, and the smoke started lazily drifting out of her space.
If anyone asked, life was fantastic.
Her phone rang in her bag, and she went over to it. The particular rock song playing was Astrid - probably something to do with the latest juicy gossip she had text her at lunch. Good, some gossip that she could wrap herself up in and get her mind off annoying petty things like a guy with silver eyes.
Silver eyes - what a ridiculous thing to even exist.
"Did she really tell you that?" Astrid's voice comes in crystal clear when she answers, and Petra tries really hard to not laugh at her friend's eagerness.
"Yeah, she said she's still getting her life together after getting out of a bad relationship. So you know - she's not on the market, but it's not exactly like Neya's off-market either. You should get back in there sometime. She's asked about you."
"....She has?" Love - okay, okay, crushes - made people weird. She would have laughed if anyone ever had suggested that Astrid was capable of sounding so timid.
“She has, promise. I mean, not everyday, so you're good, our sweet little pink-haired barista isn't some stalker, but she gets this little smile and asks about you if it's a slow day and – son of a fat fucking bitch.” Her tone fell flat as a rock.
“What??” Clearly, Astrid had been startled by the change in tone.
“Son of a bitch! I won't even believe-” Petra's eyes had wandered to the window and of all the fucking indignities-
The city of Atlantis was a metropolis. Petra had grown up cradled in its smog-ensconced arms and creepy, adult-focused billboards and storefronts, and it hadn't been a surprise when the apartment she leased out was a short alley-way width's away from the next apartment building over. It hadn't even bothered her that the other apartment's window was equal height and width from hers, to the point of being able to reach across the alleyway and shake hands with a neighbor, 12 floors up from the ground. Whatever, these things happen and the apartment across the way had been empty the whole 9 months she'd lived here.
Not anymore, and maybe he'd moved in a few weeks ago – she didn't make a habit of opening her windows very often, liking the freedom to dress – or undress – however she liked in the safety of her home.
“Pet? Hello?” Her childhood friend tried to catch her attention through the phone.
The walls in the other apartment had been painted a quiet green color and there was artwork up, and – clearly someone had been living there for a few weeks in fact. And clearly someone else liked wearing – or not – whatever they liked in their apartment.
“This prick is trying to ruin my life, I swear, Astrid, I don't know what I've done to deserve this.” Petra informs her friend. She patted herself on the back for sounding so calm, and reasonable too. So few people would, faced with this level of shit from the universe.
“....Coffee shop guy? He's still bugging you? That was at noon-” Astrid started, a frown clear in her voice. There was the no-nonsense girl she'd gone to school with.
“And he's living in the apartment building next to mine!” Petra doesn't bother hiding her scandalized tone. This was too. Damn. Far, Universe.
“....No way.” Astrid scoffed. “It just looks like him, definitely.”
“How many assholes have that haircut?” Oh fuck, was he built, too. He'd obviously just finished a shower, hair hanging limp and damp over one side of his skull. Clearly, someone had trouble remembering that they'd opened their blinds for the rest of the world to stare into their home. What a self-absorbed-
“...I guess. You're not going to do anything, are you, because-”
“I'll finish talking about Neya in a bit, okay? Or text her, lemme know it how goes, bye!” She tossed the phone on the couch, not bothering to actually hang up – Astrid would take care of that, and she went over to the window.
The jerk was definitely some type of bodybuilder or something because his abs had abs and there was a sharp V-cut disappearing below the belt of too-tight pants. His existence was flying in the face of some ancient rule. Definitely. She set her jaw and went searching through her apartment, finally finding some river-pebbles she had bought for an aquarium she'd never set up. She leaned out her window and tossed one at his window.
Nothing.
Another one, then, and it pinged satisfyingly against the window, before clattering down to the street below.
The coffee-shop-jerk looked up from toweling off his hair. Looked around – as if the sound could come from anywhere but the window, obviously – and then spotted her mid-throw of a third pebble.
There was a moment where he stared like he wasn't sure what he was seeing. Great, handsome and slow on the uptake. Truly, his existence flew in the face of everything just in the world.
Then the guy opened his window. “Hi?” He said uncertainly. Like he wasn't sure where this was going.
Well. If she was honest.
Well, maybe she hadn't thought this through.
She took too long to think of anything witty to say – demanding he put a shirt on didn't have a whole lot of pep to it and besides-
“....Can I help you?” The guy tried again.
“....I just didn't know if you realized your curtains were wide open. There might be creepers watching.” She finally said. Wrong thing to say. Oh, was Stefan rubbing off on her now?
He blinked. Offered a lop-sided grin. “I think I can handle it. But.... thanks?”
“...Sure.” She frowned and didn't move from the window.
“You're from the coffee shop, right? Curtain Call Coffee?” The guy asked after a moment.
Well, with her bright purple hair, clearly she hadn't been missed either. “Nope. Must be thinking of someone else.” She said deadpanned. Maybe if she aimed just right she could nail him in his stupid perfect face. Would that be assault?
“Clearly. Well, damn. I was actually trying to work up the courage to talk to that girl. It would have felt-” he was self-censoring. She could practically see him grab some words back mid-air. Curiousity stirred in the back of her brain, wondering what those words would be if they escaped. He had a nice voice. Another unfair strike against him. “Would have felt pretty lucky, finding out I'm neighbors with her too.”
“World's not that small,” she quipped. Patted herself on the back for that one. No, the world wasn't that small, but clearly, a fan of pretty unlikely odds.
“....My name's Dyllan. Pretty old-school of you, throwing rocks at a window.” He grinned.
“Don't get used to it.” She commented mildly. “Petra. Definitely not the girl that takes lunch breaks at Curtain Call.”
“Clearly not.” Dyllan said agreeably, folding his arms on his window sill. Watching her curiously. “Which is a shame, I'd ask that girl if I could buy her coffee sometime, and maybe share a lunch break sometime.”
“....Well, that's definitely a shame.” She set the rest of her pebbles on the outside window sill. She wouldn't do this again. This wasn't the sort of mess she got into. She hated rom-coms and this was reeking like one. “Because I mean, I definitely won't be at Curtain Call at noon tomorrow.”
What was she doing?
Dyllan brightened. She, for a moment, thought of a particularly energetic puppy. What a weird image. “Well, I.... won't look for you. I guess.”
He was still stupid and definitely too handsome to exist. Maybe Astrid needed to check on her sanity. Or would Stefan be a better judge...
“Sounds like a plan.” She pushed away from the window.
“Hey!” The new neighbor waved at her, stopping her. Petra paused, watching him. After a moment... “Are you burning something in there? That's a lot of smoke,” he said. Sounding concerned.
“Downstairs neighbor flunked out of culinary school. Put on a shirt.” She said and left the window before she could say anything else stupid.
---
Lunch was two coffees with just enough sugar in them, a pastry cut in half, and a lot of snark.
---
Petra put a little terracota planter full of river-pebbles on her windowsill two weeks later, and had a new contact at the top of her contact list. Dyllan was weird – mysterious about work and his past, but charming and eager like he hadn't had someone to talk to for a while now – and what was Petra but a kind-hearted soul, available for talking when she wasn't working.
She definitely wouldn't take him out on a date or anything.
At least not for another month. Gotta make the masses want it, first.

Giving Kagyu no chance to answer Uzume, Utsuho asks, “Neya, how was Yakuma?”
wins “most names (without listing) in a sentence in any fic I’ve written.”  At least, I’m pretty sure?  Word-saturation-wise, it’s definitely winning.  I just always stop to think about that while going over the work in question.

“Yeah, that makes sense.” It takes only a moment to think about his words. Jumping right in to see a festival sounded fun but planning things out for the day would probably benefit them much better in the long run.
Tumblr media
“How about we go for a walk and talk?” She suggests giggling at her little rhyme, still grinning with hands clasped together. A place immediately comes to mind. “We can go to the river!” It was a new spot she’d recently discovered and has quickly grown fond of. A change of scenery would also probably help this whole situation and clear the bit of awkward air between them.
They could introduce themselves properly and learn more about each other, at least that's what Neya’s hoping for. Sure, she just got back from the store but it was still rather early in the day and it's not like she had anything else better going on. If she’s being honest, Niwa-san sneaking into the warehouse was the most interesting thing to happen to her so far this week, outside of the random late-night chance encounter with Dark.
Which is kind of sad when she thinks about it.
easier said than done , right ? he can't help but worry anyways , still feeling the nervous edge of his emotions racing up and down his skin in little stinging-nettle prickles , but his hand presses against the nape of his neck and he tries his very best to settle and smother the majority of his more unpleasant feelings . something like trust wasn't easy to obtain , and he was sure that an incident like this would end up lingering in neya's mind ; just because she was willing to become a friend didn't mean they were suddenly terribly close , either .
were dark awake , then maybe his voice would have chuckled a little and teasingly encouraged him in some way . even a clumsy step taken ahead of him was still a step forward , after all , and for a boy who was severely lacking in them , making even just one friend was a precious , momentous occasion . either that , or maybe dark would have simply , merely teased without putting in any legitimate encouragement : poor , clueless neya-chan , isn't she pretty much asking you for a date ?
Tumblr media
daisuke's cheeks instantly flush redder . his expression contorts , and he hastily answers neya's offer with a nod and gulp . ' u-uh , yeah ... ! yeah ! um , anytime --- b-but it might help to plan things out , right ? ' are you busy now ? is what he'd like to ask , but ... ( argh , he can't do it --- ! ) even if he wanted to suggest that a pleasant experience could make up for an unpleasant one with the rest of the day , it still felt too awkward to try to say --- ! ' i mean , like ... i-if you wanted to go someplace right now , we could ! or , um , maybe --- er , we could figure out the one that interests you the most for next time ... ? '
festivals and story scrolls ... neya really was old fashioned . at least he had just a little experience with things like this --- living in a mansion full of hundred year old artworks had adjusted him , thank goodness !

U.S. Army hopes to start fielding futuristic robotic mules next year
The U.S. Army squads and battalions may start receiving futuristic remote-controlled robotic vehicles or robotic mules by next year.
The robotic mule, or Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport (SMET) vehicle, is designed to reduce soldiers’ load by carrying their weapons and supplies in the field. These small vehicles are expected to follow along with a squad of Soldiers as they walk to wherever it is they have been directed to go. SMET vehicle can carry up to 1,000 pounds of equipment for 60 miles in 72 hours, which could greatly reduce the burden of the gear and supplies that soldiers have to carry.
The Army Futures Command hopes to start fielding the SMET vehicle next year after successful testing with units from the 10th Mountain and 101st Airborne divisions, according to the Military.com.
Military.com, quoting Col. Tom Nelson, director for Robotics Requirements Division at MCDID, reported that the Army has been experimenting with the concept of robotic mules for more than a decade.
“The operational test demonstration really showed that the capability is ready,” Col. Tom Nelson told reporters.
10th Mountain Division is among the few divisions at the forefront of the U.S. Army’s modernization efforts, testing new equipment and tactics in order to fight and win on the battlefields of tomorrow.
four contender vehicles
Soldiers with the 101st Airborne and 10th Mountain divisions have been testing contender SMET vehicles over the last few months and said that it was a very quiet vehicle when it was in stealth mode.
“You can’t hear it 30, 40 feet away. If it’s nighttime, you would never. It sounds like a little RC car,” Sgt. Nathaniel Packard with the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division said in a video released by 27th Public Affairs Detachment.
Also, Sgt. Malcolm Perkins, squad leader 1-32 IN, 1st BCT, added that they were able to use the SMET for just bringing extra stuff into the fight.
“Everyone had ATs, AT weapons, and extra rounds, right, inert rounds, and just being able to have that capability to take at least a few rounds off of a few soldiers’ backs was amazing,” said Malcolm Perkins.
The four contender vehicles that were tested: MRZR-X system from Polaris Industries Inc., Applied Research Associates Inc. and Neya Systems LLC; the Multi-Utility Tactical Transport from General Dynamics Land Systems; the Hunter Wolf from HDT Global; and the RS2-H1 system from Howe and Howe Technologies.
One of the contenders for SMET has a steering wheel, with both a driver’s seat and a passenger seat. So if a Soldier wanted to drive that vehicle, he could. Still, the Army requirement is that the SMET be able to operate unmanned, and all four vehicles provide that unmanned capability.
All four contenders include a small, simplistic kind of remote control that a Soldier can hand-carry to control the vehicle. One of those remotes was just a light-weight hand grip with a tiny thumb-controlled joystick on top. A Soldier on patrol could carry the light-weight controller at his side.

When he encounters an arachne named Neya who needs his help, Daisuke rushes to help her—which begins his new life of meeting (and researching) the beautiful creatures around him. These monstrous ladies show him that he has a lot to learn, and Daisuke never dreamed he’d be able to satisfy his passion for monster girls like this! This fantasy manga series for mature readers is perfect for fans of Monster Girl Encyclopedia.
Then there's My Next Life as A Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! by Satoru Yamaguchi and Nami Hidaka. The first volume of the manga adaptation of the isekai light novel series about a woman trapped in an otome game is coming out on July 30, 2019.
  Synopsis:
At the age of eight, Katarina, a girl of noble birth in another world, has an accident that unlocks her memories--of playing an otome game that’s exactly like the life she’s living now. There’s one problem: she realizes that she’s playing the role of the villainess, and only bad endings await her! What will it take for her to “break the game” and live a happy life?
There may indeed be more on the way, but at the time of this writing the final license is Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist's Journey by Akiko Higashimura, the award-winning autobiography of the creator of Princess Jellyfish.
  Synopsis:
High schooler Akiko has big plans to become a popular mangaka before she even graduates, but she needs to get much better at drawing if she ever wants to reach her goal. Looking for an easy fix, she signs up for an art class, thinking all her problems will soon be solved. She’s in for a surprise: her new instructor is a sword-wielding taskmaster who doesn’t care about manga one bit. But maybe this unconventional art teacher is just what she needs to realize her dreams!

It pleased her greatly to see him eat even if he initially declined. Good food was always a surefire way to help brighten a mood! Neya's smile is warm and encouraging as he decided to take her advice and have a few bites of the donut. She folds her arms and rests them lightly against her stomach while listening to him explain why the situation was particularly stressful.
Ah, when he says it like that, she could understand. The fear and worry of being judged and having people make the wrong assumptions about your character. She understood that sort of feeling well. Neya absently begins running her fingers along the edge of her obi when an idea suddenly pops into her head.
He didn't want the gun to be seen and cause more problems right? Well the red-head was in luck! Neya was actually quite experienced in concealing dangerous weapons, especially on one's person! Given the kunai currently strapped to her thigh.
"Mm, I think I have a solution to your problem. If you simply need help hiding the weapon-- Here!"
She reaches into the sash around her waist, rummaging around one of the inner pockets she'd sewn into it. After a moment the teen would pull out a deep green cloth that was folded neatly into a small square. Neya opens the square and shakes it out, revealing a thick and solid colid fabric that fell just below her knees when unfolded to its full length. It was one of the extra wraps she normally used to wrap their lunches in but Neya hasn't had much use for the item here. The food of this time period tended to come in its own intricate wrappings that simultaneously surprised and fascinated the teen.

"You can use this and wrap it up! If you need any help wrapping it, I don't mind doing it." She neatly gathers the cloth up and folds it into a large square, holding it out for him to take with a grin. "This way, you can bring it to your parents without arousing much suspicion, right?"
Even after all this, he was still worried about sharing those sweet circles? With one hand holding the cloth, the other raises to cover her mouth as she giggles. Wow, what a sweet boy!
"Ah no--really, it's alright, I think you should keep them! Please, eat them all I insist. I can always get some more another time."
