I don't know why The Secret History is considered THE dark academia book, and for that matter I don't think anyone knows what dark academia even is at this point. It's an aesthetic, yes, but it only works as a visual and maybe musical aesthetic. Books aren't about the visual aesthetic, they're about characters and plot and relationships and symbols and themes. They're not a photo collage put into words; if I wanted a photo collage I would have sought a photo collage.

The Secret History offers some good visuals that people enjoy, but it's not a "dark academia" book, because no book is a "dark academia" book. I've been reading Babel by R. F. Kuang, and it's unironically more of an "academia" book than The Secret History, because I, too, feel like throwing up when I start studying for exams, and the book actually critically examines academia. Not to mention, it's very clear that R. F. Kuang is very interested in language, and uses the academia setting to share her thoughts on some specific questions and topics in the field of linguistics. It's not "dark academia", but it's something better: it's about academia. It's not just meant to invoke a specific imagery.

( This is not to say The Secret History is bad for not being like Babel. I love the book. I just don't want it to be labeled a "dark academia" book, because that dilutes the book down to an aesthetic, and it's so much more than an aesthetic. )

For the record. It's because of the rising popularity of dark academia and books being an aesthetic that we get works like House of Hollow, which is, ironically, entirely hollow and void of deeper meaning and themes.

Am I so bad?

Pairing: Theodore Nott x Reader

CW: just some minor hurt-comfort. Friends to lovers. Reader is purely gender neutral except for the fact they have longish hair.

Synopsis: Theo is insecure after you snort at the idea of you being together.

Words: idrk but it’s very short.

A/N: sorry this isn’t very professional or aesthetic, or beta read. It’s my first fic on here, I’ll get the gist eventually.

“Would it be so bad?”

Having had your interest peeked, you looked up from the book you were so enthralled by. Theodore laid on your bed, his uniform messy and crumpled from the day’s commotion, looking up at your ceiling.

“Hm? What, Theo?”

Your eyes dropped down on the page again, turning it slowly, almost to savor the feeling of the paper on your fingertips.

“Would it be so bad” He repeated “if we… you know, were to date?” His hands rested on his chest, one of his thumbs smoothing the top of the other in a soothing way.

“What’s this about now?” You said, a playful tone in your voice. “You getting desperate, Teddy?”

His face scrunched up in one of his usual sarcasm-filled smiles, before it straightened into a normal one.

“Be serious for a moment, would you?”

“Okay…” you closed your book on your lap and sat up “So what’s this about?”

He rolled around too so he could face you, consequently scooching up with a few huffs. “Well,” he started “you made a really disgusted, wacky sound when those Hufflepuffs mistook us for a couple”

He gestured, a hint of a shrug. “And, you know, I wanted to know what was up”

You set your book on the table, your eyebrows raised.

“Oh my god. The Theodore Nott feels insecure? Check the date, I need to put this on my calendar!” You gasped jokingly, getting up in a hurry. You laughed as Theo caught your thighs and threw you onto the bed with him.

“I’m not insecure.” he reasoned, quite loudly.

“Mhm” you pursed your lips, trying not to let any more laughter slip, but he caught on and started tickling you as ‘his revenge’.

Once you were begging for him to stop, he finally relented, mumbling a satisfied ‘that’s what you get’.

As you caught your breath, a big grin still on your face, Theo turned away from you, his shoulders slacked.

“Hey, what’s the matter?” You came to rest a hand on his shoulder, your voice softer and worried. In turn, his hand shot up to rest on yours.

“Do you truly, actually, find me sickening?” He smiled, but his eyes were sad and his voice carried that hint of melancholy that let you know he was asking sincerely.

“What? Of course not, Theo.” You squeezed his shoulder in reassurance, and your other hand came to smooth over his back. “You’re the most handsome guy I know. I thought you knew that, that’s why I was making irony earlier” you explained.

He turned his head to look into your eyes. “I’m the most handsome guy you know?” His usual grin finally reclaiming his features.

“Psh, don’t flatter yourself.” you pushed him lightly. “But yes” you returned his grin with one of your own.

“So I do have a chance” he propped himself up more to face your body.

“In your dreams, Ted” you gave him a quick peck on the cheek, before patting his head and going to put up your hair.

He tsked and mumbled to himself. “Nei miei sogni facciamo già molto di più, tesoro” In my dreams we do a lot more already, darling (treasure)

“What was that?” You spoke up, busy looking at your image in the mirror.

“Nothing, nothing…”

My most stupid Ney headcanon (okay, maybe more for the fictionalised version I play in the Napoleonic RP scene) is that he has a thing of aesthetics. Have you seen his signature with all the curls? His handwriting in his early letters?

He is a soldier, heart and soul, but there is still some side to him that appreciates fine art (and steals it from Spain)

As such, I would like to extend the understanding of the inn beyond its perceived function as a setting or aesthetic device, and suggest that the inn is a repository of meaning that allows the imaginative enactment of concerns regarding family and its protection, the limits of human sociability, and the containment of violence. These considerations can play out in the space provided by the inn because of its marginal nature, which is juxtaposed against family or clan-centred spaces undergirded by a family-centred conception of society. It serves as a place of shelter, from elements, from man and animal, but it is not a family residence with familiar associations, entrenched within the community and locale. The inn offers shelter to strangers and itinerants, rather than to the known, familial, and sedentary. It is thus an unstable shelter, temporary and ad hoc, and articulates anxieties about the protection and security of persons within places of shelter. It also represents both a central and marginal space for human sociability: a quasi-safe resting place for the traveller away from home and hearth for those who share the fellowship of the road and the promise of aid conveyed by the expression, ‘Within the four seas, all men are brothers (sihai zhi nei jie xiongdi ye 四海之内皆兄弟也)’ (Analects XII.5). The use of familial terms implies a fictive family formed by shared experience, yet this temporary alliance is not anchored by shared and known family, clan, or hometown histories. Hence, this conviviality and alliance are precarious and uncertain, always subject to the possibility of danger and violence, perhaps even debasement and de-humanisation. The unwary traveller may lose not only his goods but his life, his bodily integrity sundered and his remains scattered beyond the possibility of proper burial (si wu quan shi 死无全尸), anathema to the Confucian injunction to preserve the integrity of the person and the physical body.
