Alex Final Wars 2: Dark Alex, Chapter 28 - Trackdown
âYikes, what the hell happened to him?â Jack said, looking at a red panda slumped against a wall, the Chinese spy having sustained fatal damage from a powerful force.
âLooks like a much larger mammal got their hands on him,â Skye said.
The 2 walked to the security room of the stadium, where a lynx ZIA technician had the camera footage from last night's concert pulled up on a monitor.
âGod, look at that, itâs horrible,â Skye said, watching footage of Chinese spies gunning down civilians.
â*sigh*, fucking bastards,â Jack said.
The technician rewound the footage to show the Chinese spies disembarking trucks outside the building.
âWe see them disembarking, and we have footage of vehicles moving through the streets towards the concert.â the technician said âbut before that, the vehicles appear from nowhere. We donât see them on any other traffic cameras before that, and we canât trace them.â
Jack thought for a moment. âNick once told me about utility and service tunnels that run all over the city. There are no cameras in those places, so maybe they used one of those. Get us a map of the city superstructure, and send it to me, along with that camera footage.â
The technician nodded and set about his tasks, as Jack and Skye exited the building. The pair wound their way through the parking lot, which was filled with ZIA and ZPD vehicles, and a bunch of agents and officers from both organizations. The fox and bunny made it to their car, a sleek but unassuming DB7 Aston Martin painted in black. Although the color scheme was variable, allowing the car to change its color on the fly to throw off anyone who was taking notice of the vehicle.
The fox got in the driver's seat and started up the vehicle, while her companion activated the heads up display on the windshield, finding the video files had just been received by the carâs computer. Jack backtracked through the footage, tracing the route the Chinese vehicles took and directing Skye.
âOk, straight ahead.â
The fox stepped on the gas and the car got up to speed, moving through the city.
âDo you think we have counterparts?â Skye said.
âWhat do you mean? Keep going straight.â
âDo you think an evil Jack and Skye are running around out there?â
Jack paused and thought for a moment.
âI think we would have seen them by now. But, you do have a point.â
âWe should be ready. They might come crawling out of the woodwork one day.â
âYour right, but if the previous doppelgängers were any indication, we probably have them beat, as long as we stop them before they do damage. Go left up here.â
âOur friends in heroes will probably help us, so we can count on them for backup.â
The car continued through the streets, arriving at the location where the last bit of footage that showed the Chinese vehicles was taken.
âLook, over there,â Jack said, pointing towards a chain-link gate that was strung across a tunnel. A sign on the gate said âauthorized personnel onlyâ and had the city seal on it.
âLocked,â Skye said, pointing towards a chain and padlock that was wrapped around the gate.
âI got this,â Jack said, hopping out of the Aston Martin and running towards the gate.
The agent pulled a set of lock picks from his coat, and set to work, carefully inserting metal implements into the padlock. Skye watched, happy to see her companion enthusiastically at work like this.
Jack listened closely, and soon enough, the padlock came undone. He then took off the chain and opened the gate. Skye pulled forward and Jack hopped in, before driving off down the service tunnel.
It was dark and dingy in the tunnel, with a few drops of water dripping from above, and steam from pipes and equipment occasionally floated through the air. But then the ZIA agents came upon light at the end of the tunnel, and another gate. Beyond this barrier was another section of Zootopia, filled with buildings that served as homes or businesses to many mammals. This second gate was unlocked, allowing Jack to quickly hop out and open it.
âLet me see if I can get footage from the jam cams in this area,â Jack said, getting back in the car.
âWait, I donât think this part of the city has traffic cameras.â
âHmmm.... then maybe the Chinese based their spy ring here, as thereâs no surveillance from those cams.â
âIf they are, then we should look around.â
Skye drove the car into a side street, next to a complex that was surrounded by a tall barrier and contained two large buildings.
However, there was a garage door that leads from the complex onto the street. Skye parked the car and the pair looked into the garage, seeing a few vehicles covered in protective tarps. Then a small ground of mammals appeared, heading towards the garage door from deeper inside the complex.
One mammal motioned to another mammal, telling him to close the garage door. The door slowly came down, but just before it closed, someone impatiently removed a tarp from one of the covered vehicles, revealing a truck that looked exactly like the ones the Chinese had used to get to the concert.
âDid you see that?â Skye asked.
âI saw it.â
âThis may be their HQ. This might be where the spies came from!â
âWe need confirmation, there arenât any traffic cameras, but maybe there are privately owned security cameras.â
Skye pulled the car back out onto Main Street, and both mammals looked through shop windows in an attempt to spot any establishment that had security cameras. Although it was considerably difficult to try seeing inside the establishments of tiny mammals.
But then Jack spotted a camera inside a cafe that was friendly to mammals of all sizes. Skye stopped the car, and the pair went inside and walked up to the cashier.
âZIA,â Jack said, holding up his badge. âWe need to take a look at some footage from your security cameras.â
000
âRight there,â Toothdee said, using a laser pointer to highlight a portion of the security footage.
The Heroes in the briefing room leaned in and focused their eyesight. The camera was inside the cafe, pointed towards the entrance of the establishment. There was a large glass window at the front of the building, allowing the camera to get a view of the street, and the buildings across the street.
In the footage, a group of figures moved out of the building on the other side of the road and jumped into a waiting truck.
âThis footage is from the night of the concert attack. As you can see, the mammals coming out of this building match the spies that attacked the concert. A quick look at records reveals that the 2 buildings in this compound are owned by....â
Toothdee stole a quick glance at a piece of paper.
â....Mousowitz Ltd, a cleaning service company. And Herdings IT services. However there are no other records of these companies, so weâre pretty sure they are fronts.â
Fabienne Growly stood in the corner of the room, typing down notes.
âWeâre going to be raiding this compound in 2 teams, and we have determined there are personnel in the buildings.â
The display screen changed to a blueprint of the compound, showing the two buildings. Next to each building was a list of names.
âAlex, JayJay, Kion, Jasiri, youâll take the building belonging to the cleaning front company. Me, Judy, Nick, Jack, and Skye will take the building belonging to the IT company. We are to capture as many hostiles as we can, & collect any data we come across. I suspect as we go higher up in the buildings, their defenses will only get tougher.â
âSounds like itâs going to be a tough fight,â Jack said.
âNo doubt. But if we clear out those spies, then we take a big step towards securing Zootopia.â
000
Nick and Judy managed to procure two armored ZPD vehicles for transport, and after gearing up, the teams hopped into their respective vehicles.
As Kion headed into his transport, he spotted a familiar face sitting inside.
âFabienne? What are you doing here?â
The snow leopard was dressed in semi-casual clothing, but she also had on a bulletproof vest, protective pads, and a helmet. There were large white pieces of tape on the helmet and vest, both of which had âpressâ written on it in permanent marker.
âYou know this is going to be a dangerous mission,â Kion said, his friends climbing into the vehicle.
âIâve been in war zones before.â The snow leopard said, examining a TV camera in her lap and making sure it was functional.
âWeâll try to look good for you.â Alex joked, a small chuckle sweeping through the transport, as the ZPD Officer in control of the vehicle started driving towards the hostile compound.
After a short drive, the pair of transports pulled up to the entrance of the compound, which had two guards posted on duty. A panda guarded the entrance for large mammals, and a sheep guarded the entrance for smaller mammals.
âWhatâs that over there?â The sheep asked his coworker, spotting the two armored vehicles pull up.
The Heroes got out, and Fabienne crouched behind one of the transports, switching on her camera and turning it towards the guards.
âDetain them,â Toothdee said, pointing to the pair of guards as the team approached.
Kion and Jasiri took the initiative, heading forward and putting the two guards in zip ties.
âWhat?! Hey, donât you need a warrant or something?â The panda guard asked as his pistol was taken away from him.
âWhat, no. Weâre a military unit.â Kion said.
Jack spotted a pair of security cameras above each entrance and quickly destroyed them with his pistol.
âLetâs go,â Toothdee said, both teams heading through a small lobby area, before emerging into a courtyard.
The teams moved through the courtyard, passing by a tall metal decorative obelisk with a polished finish that shimmered as it sat in the center of the complex.
âMy team left.â Capitan Boehm said.
âMy team right,â Toothdee said.
The group split, as Alexâs team, headed into one of the buildings, coming across a wardrobe room filled with coveralls for many different species. Fabienne followed behind them, camera at the ready.
âLook here,â Jasiri said, pointing out a bunch of patches on a table in the room. The patches were logos from many different corporations, alongside many different name tags. âSwitchable name tags and logos for their uniforms. They could get access to any building they want.â
Kion moved some of the uniforms to the side and noticed a handle in the wall behind the coveralls. It was small, and the same color as the wall, making it difficult to notice. He pulled it, opening a compartment in the wall and revealing Chinese military uniforms.
âThe same type of uniforms from the concert,â Alex said.
Fabienne panned over the patches and uniforms with her camera, before the team continued forward.
âTwo guards up ahead.â JayJay signaled, pointing forward at a pair of otters with guns on their belt,
âPAWS UP!â Jasiri yelled.
The two guards jumped and spun towards the team, drawing and aiming their weapons. This forced Alex to open fire on one of the otters with his sidearm. Kion charged forward and swung his sword, slicing clean through the smaller mammal.
âStairwell, over there.â The Heroes captain said, and the team ascended to a floor that contained offices.
Three more mammals stood on guard, but the instant the team entered the room, the mammals drew their weapons and opened fire.
Fabienne hung back and filmed, while the young heroes moved forward and engaged, downing the guards.
âMore hostiles incoming!â Jasiri said, a few more mammals entered the area, one armed with an SMG. But the warriors were ready
A goat ran at JayJay, horns ready to slake into her and break bones. The wolf dodged, and the goat slammed into a window. The glass broke, and the mammal plummeted down to the ground.
Kion and a bear engaged in melee combat, the bear wielding a baton and Kion with his sword. The bear was unyielding in her assault, managing to get the lion in a headlock. Seeing only one way out, Kion stabbed the bear in the stomach, pulled away, and cut him down.
Jasiri took cover and engaged the guard armed with an SMG. Bits of paper flew up into the air as bullets struck desks in the room. Jasiri took careful aim and put a few shots into the guard.
Alex grappled with a mountain lion that charged at him, trying to knock him out. The two fought hand to paw, exchanging rapid and forceful blows. The mountain was able to kick the human back, and the captain pulled out his pistol and was about to order the mountain lion to surrender, but the lion had already ended himself with his own sidearm, no doubt seeing that the fight had turned against him and refusing capture.
âThey refused to be taken alive,â Kion said, looking at a fox who had taken the easy way out with his sidearm.
âThis will make it harder to gather information.â Alex said, âLetâs hope we can find someone with more sense, or a paper trail or computer.â
Fabienne moved into the room and looked around with her camera. But then, her keen eyes spotted something outside the building.
000
Toothdee and her team moved up a stairwell, keeping their weapons ready. They moved out of the stairwell and into a room, which had some guards in it, who had their guns drawn.
Toothdee pointed forward and the team advanced. Skye and Nick aimed their weapons and fired, hitting the weapons of the guards. The enemies jumped in surprise, but before they could react, Jack and Judy had already delivered powerful kicks that knocked them out. Toothdee on the other hand ran forward and bashed a wolf guard with her rifle before he could shoot back at her.
With all the guards knocked out, the warriors put handcuffs or zip ties on them.
âHey uh Toothdee,â Jasiri said through the radio. âI think you guys have a problem over there.â
âWhat kind of problem?â
The question was answered a few seconds later when Toothdee opened the door to the next room and was greeted by an office that was filled with bright orange flames and furniture swallowed by burning fire.
âLike a fire problem.â
âKeep low.â Toothdee instructed her team, and they all crouched as they progressed forward.
âThereâs gotta be a fire control box around here,â Skye said. âKeep your eyes peeled.â
The sounds of shouting reached the teamâs ears, and they saw a pair of guards moving through the smoke-filled room.
Nick and Toothdee moved ahead of their friends, keeping in cover behind furniture, before emerging behind the 2 guards and subduing them with either a punch or cutting off their oxygen so they passed out.
After cuffing the 2 guards, the group pulled them to an area of the building that had not been consumed by fire. This area appeared to be some sort of hub, with hallways leading in all directions.
âSplit up, but be careful. There might still be enemies, but find and activate that firebox.â Toothdee said, before directing her allies in different directions.
Judy moved down a hallway that doubled back towards the area of the building that was on fire. However the hallway she was in appeared to have already been burned, and the fire in it had since gone out or progressed on to another part of the building. The walls werenât enveloped in flames, they only glowed brightly with embers, and were covered in ash.
âOuch!â The bunny said, the hot floor burning her exposed feet. She tried to move forward by only touching the cooler parts of the floor.
But then, she spotted a figure, standing in a room adjacent to the hallway. The entire room glowed with embers, but one side of the room had been completely destroyed by fire, with the wall and part of the ceiling having collapsed. Where the wall had been, was now just open-air that led out to a perilous drop down into the courtyard below.
Judy recognized the figure, it was her dark counterpart. She stood with a pistol in her hand, gazing out of the building and almost waiting for her enemies to come to her. She turned around, knowing who greeted her, based on the voice she heard down the hallway.
âItâs a shame my troops didnât kill you at the concertâ Dark Judy said.
âThat was you?! Why would you do such a thing?!â
âWhy? Because you thwarted our invasion, and in the process, you killed someone I love.â
Judy thought for a moment and then remembered.
âWhat?! .....You mean Nickâs counterpart? On the boat?â
âExactly, thatâs why I had to punish this city, to make it suffer.â
âI donât understand how any version of me could do such horrible things.â
The counterpart raced forward, aiming her gun and firing. But Judy dodged grabbed her enemyâs arm, trying to open fire with her own pistol. But the counterpart was ready for this, kicking Judyâs arm away just as she pulled the trigger.
The two fought, close quarters, with punches and kicks. Whenever one warrior lined up a pistol shot, the other bunny would either dodge out of the way or push the shooterâs arm so the weapon fired harmlessly in a different direction. Eventually, both guns ran dry of ammo, prompting the pair to toss them away so they wouldnât hinder their melee combat.
Dark Judy kicked her enemy with her powerful legs, sending her enemy staggering back into one of the walls. The counterpart then charged forward and pinned Judy against the wall.
âThis is for everything youâve done to us.â The counterpart said, reeling back for a powerful punch.
Judy grabbed part of the burned wall and ripped it out. Then she stabbed her counterpart with the burning end.
Dark Judy screened and stumbled back, distracted, and allowing Judy to charge into her. The counterpart was pushed further back, before Judy performed a drop Kick, and sent her adversary falling off the building, and plummeting to the ground below.
The rabbit dropped, down into the courtyard, along with burning debris from the flaming building. As she fell, she reached upwards at her good-hearted counterpart and screamed, still desiring to inflict harm upon her. Her mind was consumed by fury and rage.
But then she hit the obelisk in the courtyard, the sharp metal point at the top going right through her body. Her screams and rage lingered for a moment longer, before ceasing, the dark warrior now laying transfixed, halfway up the obelisk.
She was gone, and a deep red liquid slowly dripped down the decorative structure.
Back at the top of the building, Judy sighed in relief. The rabbitâs counterpart was defeated, and with her, the ring of spies in Zootopia.
000
It was done, the entire compound had now been secured by the ZPD and ZIA, and Heroes was now heading home, their mission complete.
As the team members chatted and joked with each other, Toothdee pulled Alex off to the side, while JayJay looked on from nearby, curious as to the conversation.
âYou went too far,â Toothdee said. âWe were supposed to capture as many of them as we could! Your team captured no one, besides the two guys at the front gate! And we were with you then!â
âHey we tried to take some of them alive, but they either forced our hand or refused to be taken alive.â
Toothdee groaned in disapproval and walked off.
The captain sighed, while JayJay gave him a look of sympathy.
Toothdee was his best ally, he didnât like disagreeing with her. But, sometimes things just didnât work out. He hoped she didnât give him the cold shoulder for too long.

Adventures in America, Ch. 4 - In which Crowley makes a friend and the guardian goobers receive some unexpected news
Chapter 4 is Crowley and Aziraphale centric so enjoy because we probably wonât really see them for a while after this. Maybe. IDK I havenât written much beyond this.
Not on AO3 yet in case I decide I want to change major plot points later I guess or something lmao and also i dont want to disappoint anybody in case i never finish this
I really like this story leave me alone
Ch 1/Ch2/Ch3
-
âYou really think sushi is a good idea?â Aziraphale asked Crowley, while he watched the demon fiddle with his jacket collar in the hotel mirror. âWe are in America, Crowley, and you know I did think we should try to get a bit of the local flavor while weâre here.â He gave up dragging the brush through his hair, still damp from the shower, and turned his attention to his shirt cuffs instead.
Crowley considered this, pulling his t-shirt down and then back up again. âRight. Well, angel, Iâm not opposed to anywhere else but letâs put it like this.â He turned to Aziraphale, hands spread. âItâs supposed to be a great sushi place and weâre about to embark on at least 6 weeks of hauling up and down the American midwest, which isnât exactly known for its sushi. Roadside barbecue? Yeah. Terrible fast food? Absolutely. Hole-in-the-wall diners with great desserts? Undoubtedly. Fresh sushi? Probably not. And if the goal is to minimize miracles during this thing, if you get a bit peckish for some sake nigiri then youâre just going to have to wait until weâre back in civilization.â
Aziraphale hummed. âWell. When you put it that way. I hardly think the American midwest is uncivilized, though.â
âWeâll see about that.â He turned back to the mirror and re-folded his collar once more, flipping it back up and looking satisfied, although Aziraphale would have been hard-pressed to describe what, exactly, heâd changed. âDefinitely not known for its sushi.â
âNo. No, I suppose not.â
Crowley turned, and then raised an eyebrow. âNo waistcoat?â
âItâs hot out.â He frowned as Crowley grinned. âDonât start with the whole âthis is nothing compared to Hellâ nonsense, dear, I know that but not all of us struggle with thermoregulation.â
âFair enough. Itâs more casual, too. Very ⌠American.â He offered his arm. âShall we?â
Aziraphale couldnât help but smile a little as he took the offered elbow. âI think we shall, Crowley dear.â
Dinner was delicious, and Aziraphale had to hand it to Crowley - sushi was really a good idea. Especially if he was going to be at least 6 weeks without. The demon didnât eat, not unusual, but he seemed to appreciate the wine well enough, and when Aziraphale took the opportunity to compliment the chef (in Japanese, naturally), Crowley chipped in that he thought the restaurant was quite nice, too*. They tipped the waitress generously, and took their leave, Crowley begrudgingly sobering up before they clambered into the massive vehicle to start combing the city for any signs of Adam and the other storm chasers.
[* Crowley did not speak Japanese particularly well, and Aziraphale had tried for years to help him with grammar, syntax, and pronunciation, without much success. Still, he had mastered a few phrases, and âvery nice establishmentâ was one of the more socially-acceptable ones heâd grasped.]
âHow do they know where the storms are?â Aziraphale asked, as they cruised down a side-road, Crowley looking sharply into the parking lot of a low-cost hotel. âItâs not as if theyâre scheduled occurrences.â
âTheyâve got laptops and the like in the car,â he replied, distracted. âRadar and GPS and all that. They follow the storms that way and go to the ones that look most promising.â
Aziraphale raised his eyebrows, and turned to scan the parking lot of a Red Roof Inn. âQuite technological.â
âYeah, itâs a whole thing.â Crowley slowed to study a truck in another parking lot, and then shook his head and pulled away. âI brought the stuff to do the same thing, sâback in the room.â
âSo thatâs what was in that bag.â Aziraphale considered this for a minute. âAnd, ah, who are you expecting to use said equipment, Crowley?â The SUV stopped at a red light, and Crowley suddenly looked thoughtful.
âHuh. Didnât think about that.â He shrugged, and looked over to the car next to them idly. Aziraphale, focused on the topic at hand, didnât notice the revving of the other carâs engine. âYou could learn,â Crowley said. Aziraphale, lost in thought about technological advancements in meteorology, didnât register the distraction and, under that, the devilish glee.Â
âIâm not much good with computers.â He sighed. âI do have the old accounting machine, but -â He stopped, because the 4-Runnerâs engine revved rather loudly. Alarmingly. He looked over to the demon. âCrowley?â Something caught his eye. âCrowley, this car wasnât ⌠Iâm certain this wasnât a manual transmission when we picked it up yesterday.â
âWasnât it?â Another hum of the engine. The radio crackled, and songs shuffled through the speakers, seconds at a time, as the SUV cast around for something that would suit. It paused on a song by - who else? Aziraphale thought - Queen, but then moved on, searching through a few more before settling on something with a heavy bassline, electric guitars, and a prominent drum piece. It was bebop, and Aziraphale didnât like it. Crowley looked thoughtful. âItâs better.â
Aziraphale did have to hand it to the car: the vocalistâs shouted âGo!â coordinated perfectly with the light changing from red to green and Crowley, predictably, slamming the gas. Relatedly, it also coordinated with Aziraphaleâs rhyming yelp of âNo!â
Tires shrieked and the SUV roared forward, while Crowley laughed maniacally as he shifted through the gears and wove around slower traffic down the long street. The other car - the instigator, Aziraphale tried to assure himself, although he knew Crowley had probably tempted them into it without even trying that hard, the old snake - was a smaller outfit, two doors and sleek, with an iridescent paint job and chrome flashing on the tires. It was also, to Aziraphaleâs horror, keeping pace, roaring along beside their car, in spite of surrounding traffic and Crowleyâs absolutely death-defying steering.Â
âCrowley, what are you doing?â he half-yelled, half-groaned. âYouâre going to get us killed! Or arrested!â
The demon whooped. âJust a bit of fun, angel. Hang on!â Another gear shift, and the car accelerated, hitting a highway on-ramp and roaring onto the freeway. The other car, momentarily behind, followed suit.Â
âWeâre supposed to be looking for Adam,â he reminded Crowley, right hand with a white-knuckle grip on the ceiling handle and the left with an equally tight grip on the center console. âCrowley, please -â
âWe have all night to find him.â Crowley glanced to the left, and caught sight of the other car, prompting him to accelerate. The dashboard in this vehicle was much larger than the Bentleyâs vast even, and although Aziraphale was moderately terrified for the state of his corporation - he couldnât imagine Heaven being inclined to give him a new body these days - he did risk a lean over to check the speedometer.
Ah. That was a mistake. He sat back, and pressed himself against the seat. Silently, as they wove through other cars and played leapfrog with the other racer, Aziraphale prayed. Crowley, for his part, laughed over the song blaring from the speakers, and drove, only ever taking his eyes off the freeway ahead to check the progress of the challenging vehicle. The 4-Runner groaned in protest as Crowley quickly changed gears to slow down, swerve around a box truck on the right shoulder, and then speed back up again, rocking back into the lane in front of the truck and taking off. The other car, slowed by a vehicle only going about 20 miles per hour over the speed limit in the passing lane, had to brake hard, and for a few blessed moments, Aziraphale thought it was over. Crowley would slow down now, surely.
Instead, the demon leaned out of the window to better make a rude gesture at the other car. There was a blaring of a horn, and in the rearview mirror, Aziraphale saw the other car break free of the traffic and start to catch up. He groaned, hand over his eyes, prepared for another round of acceleration, but was surprised to hear, over the rushing wind of Crowleyâs open window, someone yelling, âHey, man, get off next exit!â Crowley yelled something in response - very rude, Aziraphale thought - but slowed down anyway, guiding the car off the freeway, tailed by the other car.
âWhat are they doing?â he asked, cautiously, as Crowley braked again, and turned hard into the parking lot of an International House of Pancakes. The car lurched into park, and Crowley hopped out. The 4-Runner, relieved, shut itself off without any miraculous input at all.Â
âProbably looking to fight. Donât worry, angel, Iâll handle it.â
âFi - Fight? Crowley, this is America, they probably have guns!â He jumped out too, half-jogging around the back of the massive vehicle until he fell into step beside Crowley. The other car, glimmering under the fluorescent lights of the parking lot, shut off, and two young women stepped out. Yes, definitely American, Aziraphale thought, with a disapproving look toward the ripped jeans and artfully torn t-shirts. The woman who had been driving had a baseball hat on. Backwards. Aziraphale rolled his eyes. Americans.
âDude,â the driver said. âNo joke, man!â To Aziraphaleâs surprise, when she reached for Crowley, she didnât attempt a stab or a punch, but rather grabbed his outstretched hand and shook it enthusiastically. She looked to her companion, laughing. âTold you this guyâs like my dadâs age! The fuck you learn to drive like that, man? You drive like a bat outta hell!â
Crowley smirked. âBat out of London, actually - way harder driving there.âÂ
The other woman crossed her arms, her expression one of pleasant surprise. âShit, dude, youâre British, too?â She flipped her long braid back over her shoulder and smoothed a lock of dirty blonde hair down. âNow Iâm really impressed - you stayed on the right side of the road and everything.â
The driver rolled her eyes. âShut up Leanne, itâs not that hard to remember after like, a week. This your ride?â She approached the SUV, hands on her hips. âDonât see too many of these that can race like that, you know.â
Crowley winked to Aziraphale, and then sauntered up behind the driver, hands in his pockets. âItâs a rental. We just flew in this afternoon. Sorry, didnât catch your name.â
âCall me Mary. Who are you, dude?â
âGood name, Mary,â Crowley said, grinning over his shoulder back at Aziraphale, who scowled. âUsed to know a Mary. Great lady. You can call me Crowley.â
âItâs short for Mariel. Mind if I look under the hood?â
âBe my guest.â He followed her to the front of the car and Aziraphale and Leanne followed behind, Leanne studying Aziraphale and Aziraphale still glaring at Crowley. The hood of the car popped up, and Mary whistled.
âHowâd you end up with a rental with a manual and a V8?â
Crowley leaned a hip against the bumper, arms crossed. âOh, you know, only the finest Enterprise rentals had to offer.â If Mary found that suspicious, she didnât remark on it, save to nod approvingly and slam the hood of the car shut.
âWell, anyway, thanks for the race. Super fun. Donât think Iâve pushed Bella up past 110 in a while.â She shook her head at this appalling state of affairs. âEverybody else around here knows me and backs off before we hit the highway. Poor girl never gets room to run.â
âTragic. Mustang, is she?â
âYeah, had her from new,â Mary said, smiling fondly back at her car. Aziraphale could see Crowley soften to that. âLeanne and I have put all kinds of work into her - if we hadnât got stuck in traffic she wouldâve had this thing on the straightaway for sure,â she added, patting the hood of the rental. âYou got me with the traffic, though.â
âItâs an art.â
Leanne had since circled around to the front of the car with the rest of them, and gently slid her hand into Maryâs. She looked to Aziraphale, head cocked. âWhoâs your friend?â
âAh, Azir - er, Ezra,â he corrected quickly.
âNice.â Leanne looked from Aziraphale back to Crowley. âAre you guys -â
âWhat do you drive back home?â Mary asked, ignoring Leanneâs line of questioning, for which Aziraphale felt he should probably owe her a debt.Â
âThe Bentley. Itâs a coupe - vintage.â Crowley added.
Maryâs mouth opened a little. âWoah, no joke? Shit, dude. You got pictures?â His phone was already clearing his pocket before sheâd finished the question. Aziraphale shook his head.
âItâs cool,â Leanne commiserated, patting Aziraphale on the shoulder as Mary stepped away, the better to look at probably all of the photos of the Bentley Crowley kept on his phone. She was already marveling at the condition - âIâve looked after it,â Crowley said proudly - and Leanne went on, âSheâs got like four thousand pictures of her car on her phone, too.â She shook her head, and then brightened up. âSo whatâre you guys doing in Texas? You come in for a festival or something?â
âOh, no, no, weâre here on holiday. Vacation,â he added, in case she hadnât understood. She giggled.
âYeah, I got it. Thatâs cool. Why Texas?â
He thought about it for a second. âJust seems very American. Iâve never been, and itâs been years since Crowley last left England. Thought we would mix it up a bit.â
Leanne nodded solemnly. âGreatest state in the nation. Well, Maryâs partial to Nevada, but sheâs wrong. Anyway, thatâs cool. So you just driving around, checking out the night life?â
âSomething like that,â he lied.Â
âYou should try Rain on 4th,â Leanne suggested. âI think youâd like it. Great music, really great drinks and uh, I think you guys would fit in with the crowd there.â
Aziraphale pretended to think it over. âRain on 4th. Iâll say something to Crowley. We were just thinking of turning in, though, finding somewhere to stay.â
âThatâs why you kept slowing down in front of hotels.â Leanne, suddenly, sounded relieved. âWe were wondering about that. Like, Mary thought you were looking for a race, obviously, but I was like âwhat if theyâre murderers stalking their next victimâ?â She laughed. âThatâs a relief, anyway!â
âOh!â Aziraphale forced a laugh, but he was sure he hadnât been able to hide the shock on his face before she noticed. Murderers? âOh, my dear, no, no definitely not murderers. No. But, ah, would you have any recommendations? For places to stay, I mean.â
Leanne put her head to the side. âWhat kind of place you guys looking for?â She looked from Aziraphale, back to Crowley, and then to Aziraphale again. âI mean, the nicest chain place is going to be the Marriott, probably, or the Westin, but like, thereâs the Omni and -â
Aziraphale held up a hand, and resisted saying that yes, the Omni was very nice, pity they wouldnât actually be using the room. âWeâre looking for something a little more ⌠economical. But clean,â he added.
âOh, okay.â She thought about it. âWell, steer clear of Red Roofs and Motel 6âs, then. I found blood in the bathroom of a Red Roof one time**, and like, they totally acted like I should be cool with it. Super weird.â She shrugged. âMicrotels are usually pretty clean and super cheap. Uh, I dunno, the chain places. Hiltons or Doubletrees or whatever.â
[** Authorâs note: True story, I totally did. Stayed in a Red Roof the night before I flew to Austin to stay at the aforementioned Westin for a conference (all expenses paid, hell yeah) and boy those could not have been two more polar opposite experiences. From bloody bathroom tiles to five-star service BOY did I get some whiplash.]
âMicrotel,â Aziraphale said thoughtfully. âCheap and clean, you said?â He glanced over to Crowley, and found that he and Mary had left to discuss Bellaâs engine in more detail.Â
âYeah, over by the airport.â Aziraphale started walking leisurely back towards the Mustang and his demon, Leanne falling into step beside him. âYou going to be in Austin the whole time?â
âHm? Oh, no.â He shook his head. âNo, we rented the vehicle for easier travel - weâll be moving around for a few weeks, seeing the sights, you know.â He nodded his head toward Crowley. âHe loves a good, ah, road trip.â He raised his eyebrows as Mary and Crowley started crouching down in front of the car, obviously considering sliding underneath it to get a better look, right there in the International House of Pancakes parking lot. Mary even had her phone out to use the flashlight, but Aziraphale pointedly cleared his throat. Crowley paused.
âWhat, angel?â
âAw,â Leanne whispered, exchanging an affectionate glance with Mary.Â
âHotel, remember?â he said, jerking his head back toward the car, hands folded behind his back. âWe were looking -â
âYeah, I remember. Weâve got a minute.â
âIâm quite tired.â
Crowley was looking at him flatly. Had there not been unfamiliar humans around, he probably would have lowered his sunglasses to really fix Aziraphale with a look. âYouâre tired?â
âYes,â he replied primly. âMiss Leanne was kind enough to recommend some reasonably-priced hotels that will be clean. By the airport.â He raised his eyebrows significantly. Crowley continued staring. âWith excellent freeway access.â
The demon groaned. âYeah, alright. Alright, I get the point.â He held up a hand. âFive minutes?â
Aziraphale sighed. âVery well. Five minutes.â Crowley nodded, enthusiastically, and then he and Mary slid under the Mustang, Mary talking excitedly as the flashlight beam flickered from one mechanical piece to another. Aziraphale sighed. âAt least heâs having fun.â
Leanne laughed. âHey, mind if I ask about your coat?â When Aziraphale looked confused, she went on, âI do some costume design on the side for a little theater company, and thatâs a really neat coat. Like, looks like it could have been straight out of the nineteenth century.â
âI suppose it does, yes,â Aziraphale laughed. âI have had it for quite a while.â He shrugged, grinning, and parroted Crowleyâs earlier assertion. âIâve looked after it.â
âSo whatâs it made of? Was it custom or - ?â
In reality, it was probably more than five minutes, but Aziraphale was more than happy to discuss his coat with a young woman who appreciated good tailoring. Eventually, when Crowley and Mary emerged from under the car, brushing themselves off, it was Crowley who reminded Aziraphale that they really ought to be going, but only after he and Mary had exchanged numbers***. Leanne had been highly appalled at Aziraphaleâs statement that he didnât actually have a cell phone, but he assured her she was welcome to text Crowley any time she might have questions about period clothing, and Crowley only grumbled about it a little.Â
[*** When Mary had expressed concern that texting or calls wouldnât work with an international number, Crowley assured her that his cell carrier was very accessible worldwide, and could pick up messages from anywhere she could think of, and probably a few places beyond that.]
âHey, enjoy America though, alright?â Leanne added, as the two pairs started to draw apart, backing away toward their respective vehicles. âYou guys ever have any questions or whatever, you can hit this girl up!â
Mary looked at her disapprovingly across the hood of their car as she opened the driverâs door. âWhat, youâre a tour guide now?â
âNo, but like, theyâre in a strange country, Iâm just being nice.â Leanne stuck her tongue out at Mary. âIâm allowed to be nice if I want to.â
Mary snorted. âYeah, I guess.â They smiled fondly at one another, and then, as one, turned and waved at Aziraphale and Crowley. âAnyway, bye guys! Nice to meet you. Thanks for the race!â
Once back in the 4-Runner, with the roar of the Mustang fading behind them, Aziraphale settled in, pulled his seatbelt on, and smiled happily. âWhat nice young ladies. Miss Leanne was quite helpful with local hot-spots, too.â
âYeah.â The key turned in the ignition without Crowleyâs input, as the car grumbled to life. Hesitantly, the radio flickered on, the volume so low as to be almost inaudible, and Aziraphale clicked it off. âGood catch on that hotel tip, by the way.â
âYou know, if we find Adam,â Aziraphale said, as Crowley steered back onto the freeway, following signs to the airport, âand thereâs enough time, she did tell me a nice place to get a drink, if youâd like.â Crowley hummed in noncommittal acknowledgement. âRain on 4th, she said. She was very complimentary - what are you laughing about?â
âOh, angel.â Crowley shook his head, and tossed his sunglasses into Aziraphaleâs lap. âNever change.â
âYou know the place? I thought you said you havenât been to America -â
âI have Twitter. And the internet. You read things.â He glanced sidelong at the angel. âBit like your club you went to at the end of the nineteenth century.â
Aziraphaleâs eyes widened. âA gentlemensâ club? Oh, itâs been years since Iâve been to one.â
Crowley was looking at him. âDo you -â He trailed off and looked back to the road, fingers drumming pensively on the steering wheel.
âDo I what, dear?â
âNever mind.â He jerked the wheel to the right and swerved from the left lane and onto the exit ramp, while the horn of a car heâd cut off blared behind them. âYou do know what a gentlemensâ club is, right?â
Aziraphale chuckled. âOf course I do, dear. I rather liked spending time with those lovely men - we all really did have similar tastes.â
âUngh?â Crowley said, hastily looking out the window and into the first parking lot they came across - it was for a Jiffy Lube, which was most definitely not where Adam was staying.Â
âOf course,â Aziraphale went on, âthey also used it as a cover to engage in their sadly-taboo love affairs. I didnât partake in that, but the dancing was nice all the same.â He reached across the console, which was so broad that it made what would normally be a comfortable gesture physically impractical and somewhat awkward, and rested his hand on Crowleyâs leg. Crowley made one of his little noises, still looking out of the window, and Aziraphale smiled. âI think you would have liked it, if you hadnât decided to sleep through that portion of history. I am rather sorry about that.â
âNgh, I know, angel.â Suddenly, the car lurched, as Crowley slammed on the brakes. âHang on.â He squinted. âWhatâs it say on the side of that red truck?â
âDear, you stopped in the middle of an intersection.â When Crowley glared at him and failed to move, in spite of Aziraphaleâs pursed lips and the honking of various cars cautiously steering around them in the middle of the intersection, he sighed. âGet closer, I canât read the front from here.â
âRight, fine.â Crowley pulled forward, drove across the sidewalk, and pulled up alongside the truck. âSâthat it? Says itâs it, right?â
âIt says âBig Sky Severe Storm Spottersâ just there.â Aziraphale indicated the front of the truck, where a small decal had been placed. âIs that them?â He looked up to the hotel, while Crowley nodded. âOh, Microtel.â He smiled. âShe does work in mysterious ways.â
âHuh?â Crowley slung his arm across Aziraphaleâs shoulders, the better to look behind them as he reversed back over the sidewalk. âWho?â
Aziraphale considered it. âLeanne,â he settled on. âThis establishment was her first suggestion when I asked for a hotel recommendation.â Crowley snorted. âI know, quite the coincidence, wasnât it?â He frowned, as Crowley pulled back onto the freeway. âWhy are we leaving?â
âGotta get our stuff, donât we? Donât!â He reached over and grabbed Aziraphaleâs hand as the angel lifted it to snap his fingers. âNo magic, if we can help it. Donât want him to know weâre here. And weâve got time to grab our stuff before we stake them out.â
âAh.â Aziraphale nodded, and didnât say anything when Crowley relaxed and let his arm fall to the console, his fingers still wrapped around Aziraphaleâs. âThat does make sense.â He settled back into his seat, more comfortable, breathing a small sigh of relief when he saw that Crowley was barely going over 90.Â
It was the work of an hour to pick up their bags, load back into the car, and return to the Microtel where the truck was still parked. Crowley pulled into a parking lot across the street, with a good view of the hotel entrance as well as the truck, killed the lights, and hissed something to the car. The engine, to the carâs great surprise, idled more quietly. Crowley nodded, approving, pulled his phone out, and tilted the seat back, his heels propped up on the steering wheel.Â
âSo now we wait?â
âNow we wait,â Crowley agreed, scrolling through something. He paused, squinting at the phone, and zoomed in on something. âOh, hey, wait a second before you start in on whatever book youâve got.â Aziraphale stopped moving, his hand halfway to his briefcase. âGot an email from Lucky.â
âOh!â Aziraphale stopped, and held out his hand. Crowley dropped the phone into it. âHere, Iâll read it. Oh, bother.â He puzzled over the phone for a minute, taking a moment to zoom back out and then a further minute to actually open the email. Crowley remained silent, eyes closed but a small smirk on his lips. âDonât look so smug, Crowley, itâs unbecoming.â
âYeah, okay.â
âVery well, here it is. It reads:
ââHi, Nanny,
âWow, sounds like you and Brother Francis have had a nice spring! Glad to hear you had an okay time at the flower show, even if you didnât win anything. Hah, Iâm sure Francis reminded you winning isnât everything but whatever, it is kind of great to win sometimes -ââ
Crowley sighed fondly. âHeâs always been so competitive.â
ââ - but having fun is cool too, I guess. Anyway, I graduated from high school! I attached a few pictures of my graduation - the cool cat next to me in most of the pictures that isnât my mom or dad is my friend Hal, I think Iâve told you about them before. Wish you could have come to meet everybody, but I get that traveling trans-Atlantic is rough, especially if you donât like flying.
âAre you guys doing anything this summer? Iâm super excited - I told you Iâm starting college for climatology in the fall, but I didnât know until a week or two ago that before I do that, I get to go on a road trip this summer! Sort of road trip. Like, weather-related road trip. Iâll beâ âŚ.â Aziraphale trailed off, blinking at the text on the screen, before he swallowed, his mouth suddenly very dry, and continued, ââ Iâll be storm chasing across the midwest this summer. Iâm really excited to see some severe weather close-up, and Iâll be working with a couple of researchers so hopefully Iâll learn a lot, too.ââ
Aziraphale looked to Crowley, who was staring at him. âYouâre kidding,â Crowley said, eyes wide. Aziraphale shook his head, and bent back over the phone, picking up the tempo as he read.Â
ââAlthough Iâm sure youâre probably super excited about me chasing the hellish fury of a vengeful God, just in case Brother Francis is worried please let him know that it really is very safe, and the researchers Iâll be working with often take meteorology and climatology students on storm tours, to teach them - me, I guess! - about severe weather patterns, how to spot developing dangerous weather, and other stuff like that. I mean, I know youâre probably all about widespread destruction or whatever, but sorry to disappoint you since I guess Iâm hoping to learn how to prevent casualties and warn people to get to safety! Brother Francis is super proud, Iâm sure!
âAnyway, Iâll email or text you from the road if you want. I can even send videos and pictures! Iâm sure youâll get stuff on snapchat too. Plus, the researchers - Rachael and Noel - update their Facebook page with events from the road during chasing season too, if you want to see their videos and stuff, whichâll probably be way better than anything I take on my phone. You might even see me in a cameo haha! Iâll be internet famous. Discovery Channel, here I come! Their company is called âBig Sky Severe Storm Spottersâ, theyâre the only one on Facebook I think.
âSo thatâs the update! Hear from you soon!
âInfernally missing you guys or whatever,
Luckyââ
Silence permeated the interior of the car for a few minutes. The engine, embarrassed, idled more quietly still. Wordlessly, Aziraphale handed Crowleyâs phone back to him, the two of them staring fixedly out of the windshield for a long, long time. Across the street, the red truck sat in the parking lot lights, and somewhere in the hotel, two anti-Christs^ were sleeping soundly.
^ Sort of.
Crowley was the first to break the silence, reaching his hand up slowly to cover his eyes, and pulling his knees in closer to his chest. He sighed. âWell, shit.â

Chapter 6
I was watching Ninja III The Domination again when Erin popped her head up into the garage door. After opening the door for her Erin burst in before telling to come outside. She had just bought a dirt bike. Errr, at least I thought she had bought it. While I was staring at this dilapidated, muddy, dirt bike she cheerfully recounted the story of how a colleague of her had heard about this rich redneck who was jumping a bike and trying to crash it up on beer can hill. Turns out the kid couldnât kill the bike, but instead busted his ankle up in the process. When the ambulance came for his screeching ass, they just left the bike there, and nobody ever did anything with it. So Erin got her uncleâs truck and they loaded it up, and fixed it up together.Â
âSo. You stole it?â I said.Â
âHe left it!â
Ok, I had a feeling this conversation wasnât going to really ever resolve itself so I just agreed. âHe left itâ I said. âCool! You got a bike!â Erin had got on it, and kick started it before revving the engine and making a growling face at me.Â
âNow we can be in a gang!â she said.Â
âYes please! We need some patches!â I had a âmotorcycleâ of sorts. It was actually an add on for bikes. A small engine that you could place on the bike tire of your bike. Theyâve since made them electric, but mine still ran on gas, and sounded and smelled like a 70s moped. It was next to a broken ladder on the side of the house, and was under a ripped up blue tarp. Erin and I moved some tree banches and junk out of the way and pulled it from the side of the house. I immediately jumped on top of it, and tried to pull start. The first couple times it felt pretty gummed up, but on the third it finally turned over. I cloud of white smoke emitted from the miniature tail pipe. The bike was an 80s mountain bike which I had got from Goodwill. A specialized âStumpjumperâ which still had good bones. I revved the engine and made the same snarly face back at Erin.Â
âWE NEED PATCHES!â I yelled at Erin.Â
âI KNOW!â
I pushed my bike up the embankment, the engine still sputtering away, and Erin hopped on her bike. We drove through some residential streets before making it onto what was generally referred to as River Road. It was a long winding road with trees on both sides of it. It was nice because the speed limit there was just 25, so you could just cruise and get a good view of the river. The sun was going down on the day, just as fall was sunsetting as well. We both pulled into a large parking lot where boats would dock.Â
âWe need a mascot? â I said after Erin turned off her engine.Â
âA rat?â
âRats are dope actually. Super smart. Would be good for the cartoon as well....River rats?â
âOMG YES PLEASE! River rats! Lets make some sketches back at your place!â
River rats made sense. We were quiet for a few moments and just looked at the river flowing by. Soon it would all freeze over. We picked the worst part of the year to start a motorcycle gang.Â
âHave you printed anything lately?â Erin asked as we watched the last few moments of the sun twinkle away on the river.Â
âI printed a sheet of acid. Still havenât taken any of it. âÂ
âNice, you know whatâs weird? Now that I can basically have anything, I donât feel like I really need it as much. Itâs like a pigeon with too much food. They just fly awayâ
âYeah, I know what you mean. But we should trip this weekend. Siri asked me what design I wanted on the blotter paper!âÂ
âYour Siri is crazy!âÂ
âI know, I had to roll back an update. She like became a cop or something for a hot minute. Said she wouldnât even print weed. But then I just rolled back the update and all was goodâ
The sun had gone down at this point, and we were both starting to feel the soon to be winter air chilling our bones. We both were just wearing flannels and jeans so not exactly equipped for an artic exploration. We hopped on our bikes and began the night ride back to my place. As we rolled up to the âFalling Rockâ sign we saw a suburban which had stopped in the middle of the road. Itâs lights were on, and there was something small standing in front of it. From a distance it looked like a little kid. The dome light of the vehicle was on, and it was still running, but no sign of the driver. As we rolled up closer the âpersonâ in front of the vehicle came into focus. It wasnât a person at all, it was a light grey creature of some sort. It was standing on two legs which covered with a light grey fur, and it was looking down at its hands. We had only one choice as we got ever closer, and that was simply to gun it. Both of us hit the accelerators as we came closer to the thing, and as we past, it put its hands up in the air and screamed at us. Itâs face was like that of a wolf mixed with a badger of some sort. It looked completely alien. And I kid you not. It had red eyes. For real. Bright red eyes. Both of us kept our throttle at full blast down the road, Erin looked back a few times to check on me and make sure I hadnât been eaten or anything. We pulled into Lureâs Tackle which was a bait shop and gas station. The fluorescent lights beamed down on us.Â
âWhat the fuck?!â I exclaimed to Erin the moment the engine cut.Â
âWhat The......FUCK!â She responded.Â
âThat thing had red eyes. God help me, it had red eyes Erin!â
âAnd where was the driver?â Obviously somebody got out, because the dome light was onâ
âProbably ate him. We should call the cops!â I retorted.Â
âI donât want them seeing my bike, I never registered it. Plus. You think theyâd believe a couple of heads out for a night cruise?â
Erin paused before continuing.
âI think that was the driver.â
âWhat?!â
âDid you see how it was looking at its hands? They probably freaked out that they had turned into a miniature werewolf, got out of the car and started wondering âWhat the fuck am I!?â before trying to call for help from usâÂ
I had actually heard stories about shapeshifters in these parts that go way back. Under the circumstances, it honestly seemed like the best possibility so far. We walked into the shop and I got a frozen blue Guzzler, and Erin got a bag of popcorn for 15 cents.Â
We chilled out on a parking barrier, and erin rolled a cigarette as I stole her popcorn. She took some of my Guzzler.Â
âYou realize if we told absolutely anyone they would just think we were on acid?â
âlawl, of course, you do have a literal sheet of acid in your house right nowâ
âDid we take some by accident? Like. Iâve heard about people having similar hallucinationsâ
âDo you feel like youâre on acid? Come on, this is the most sober Iâve been in days.â Erin responded.Â
âmaybe some sort of mass hysteria. Like, with UFOs in the 50s, all of a sudden everyone started seeing themâ
âwe werenât even talking to each other, how could we influence what we both saw? That thing was real, and itâs out thereâÂ
âAnd it saw usâÂ
âThat it didâ
Erin kick started her bike, and I pull started mine. We rode back to my place, and the excitement surrounding designing our patches for our biker gang subsided. When sat at my plywood table and I had put out some markers and colored pencil and a stack of copy paper.Â
âWe gotta draw itâ Erin said to me.Â
I wanted to get the thing out of my head, I had to sleep alone there after all. But Erin had already begun. She started off with pencil, lightly sketching in some legs, which she then erased before opening up her phone.Â
âWhat are you searching for?â
âWolf legs. Itâs back legs looked like a dog didnât they?â
âI guess so. â I responded. My drawing was looking more and more like a 1st graders the more I thought about it. Erinâs was coming out fantastic, and she was working in some of the colored pencils as well. Even though it felt mostly grey, there was a hint of blue in its fur.Â
âMaybe it had mange. You know, like a mangey dog. Didnât people used to say that? You mangey dog! I think that makes their hair fall outâ
âSo, why was it standing on two legs then. Why did it have hands with fingers?â Erin retorted, her eyes transfixed on her drawing. This actually made sense. The thing was looking at its hands. And they were hands. They werenât paws. Plus, how could a dog even look at its hands, it canât turn its paws around if it wanted to. Maybe a bear... A mangey bear.Â
âmaybe a guy was transporting a mangey bear, the bear broke out of its cage. The guy ran away, and the bear screamed at us because heâd been abused?â
Erin stopped drawing and looked up at me.Â
âWhy is it so hard to believe what you saw?â she asked.Â
âIâm just trying to make sense of it. You know. I mean..It seemed like a thing. But your mind can play tricks on you.â
âBut we both saw itâ
With that Erin picked up her paper and showed me her drawing and said.Â
âWe both saw thisâ
And she was right. What I was looking at was a perfect sketch of the thing. Looked like it ws straight off of Unsolved Mysteries, but that was it.Â

Texans Love Their Trucks
Texas buys more pickup trucks than any other state in the country. Itâs the reason why all the big truck manufactures produce Texas edition exterior packages for the market. One in five trucks sold in the US are sold in Texas, according to Edmunds. All this means is that Texans know exactly what they want out of a truck and are very vocal about their preference. Iâve overheard debates between Ford and Chevy truck guys that use more facts than a presidential debate, although just as heated.
The 2017 Honda Ridgeline AWD is a completely redesigned truck from its previous generation. Itâs the new kid at school trying out for the football team in order to make friends quickly. Iâve driven just about every kind of truck from an antique with a 3-speed column shift to a massive diesel with air brakes, so I was really excited to see where the Ridgeline fell on the truck spectrum. My first thought in the parking lot when it arrived at the office was, âLooks like a CR-V with a bed⌠an El CR-V.â But I wanted to be fair, so I quickly wiped the slate clean before I got inside.
Exterior
If you put the Honda Ridgeline next to the Honda Pilot and CR-V you can clearly see the similarities between them. Mostly in the face as they share the same features all the way up to the front doors before each of them start to show their individuality. This is nothing new, just look at the Chevy Silverado and Tahoe, or Toyota Tundra and Sequoia. Having said that, I do not think the 2017 Honda Ridgeline gives off the rugged masculinity that is commonly associated with owning a truck. You look at truck commercials and always see them doing manly things at a construction zone or kicking up mud in the wildernesses as a stern voiced narrator tells you to go buy one. Looking at the Ridgeline I canât imagine anyone wanting to install a 3 inch lift and taking it off-roading in Moad, Utah.

The Honda Ridgeline may not exhale testosterone from its exhaust pipe, but it is vestal. The Ridgeline comes equipped with a lockable in-bed trunk that can also double as a cooler. LED lights on both sides of the bed are a welcomed feature when you are trying to load up the truck in the middle of the night. The in-bed trunk is deep enough to store a vacuum cleaner, and itâs also where the spare tire is stored. The tailgate is dual action so can be opened two different ways. You can option the Ridgeline with truck bed speakers to make it the ultimate tailgater at sporting events and use the 400-watt AC power inverter to hook up any electronics to keep the party going.
Interior
As Iâve mentioned in the past I am not a tall man, so itâs common for me to âhop intoâ most modern pickup trucks that donât have side steps. I did not have this problem in the 2017 Honda Ridgeline as it sits at a height that is accommodating to most heights. Once inside, the Honda Ridgeline shows you its most attractive feature, space! The Honda Ridgeline shares about 1/3 of its DNA with the Honda Pilot, so the interior feels more like an SUV than a truck. Every friend I gave a ride to told me the same thing, âIt feels like Iâm in a mini-van.â Due to the spacious interior and high sitting positions. That is not necessary a bad thing, because the Honda Ridgeline is very comfortable to ride in. There is enough space in the backseat for everything from child-seats to golf clubs. The rear seats fold up leaving you plenty of floor space to store big items inside.

The Ridgeline is meant to compete against other mid-size trucks like the Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado, and the Toyota Tacoma, but it has the interior space of a full size truck. This particular Ridgeline had the RTL-E trim level which meant it was well equipped. Heated leather seats and steering wheel, tri-zone climate control, Car Play, 8 inch touchscreen display, keyless entry, backup camera, 8 speaker audio system, satellite radio, powered sliding cabin window, moon roof, power seats, and push-button start were just some of the highlights the Ridgelineâs interior had to offer.
Specs.
The Honda Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5 liter direct injection V6 producing 280-hp and 262lb-ft, same engine used in the Honda Pilot. The Ridgeline does have decent power considering it weighs 4,500 pounds. It does respond well to a heavy foot as it reaches 0-60 in under 7 seconds, and thanks to independent rear suspension it can handle its own through the turns. Gas mileage is also good at 18 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on highway, and I averaged 21 mpg during my week of nearly 600 miles.
The All-Wheel Drive system in the Ridgeline can be adjusted at the touch of a button between Sand, Snow, Mud, or Normal to adjust for road conditions. Switching out of normal also means that the Ridgelineâs engine revâs higher and therefore feels a lot quicker, at the expense of burning more fuel. The Ridgeline has no chassis with a unibody construction. The AWD also increases the Ridgelineâs towing capacity up to 5,000lbs and has a payload of 1,500lbs.
I took the Honda Ridgeline on the dirt roads of the country to see if it could handle getting mud in its wheels. I was surprised how smooth the Ridgeline felt while driving at 75 mph over washboard dirt roads. All I felt was vibrations under my feet, a sign that the Ridgeline was working hard to keep me comfortable. There was an instant where I felt the suspension travel as we drove over a crest in the road and felt like it wanted to break loose. A moment of concern since the Ridgeline has a big warning sticker advising against sudden maneuvers because it can tip over and roll. Thankfully, the well handling Ridgeline stayed in control without me having to turn into a rally driver.
The 2017 Honda Ridgeline comes in several different trim levels ranging in price from $30k to $44K. Starting with the RT trim, RTS, RTL-T, RTL-E, and Black Edition, all of which can be optioned with AWD.
The model shown here was the second to highest trim level with a sticker price of
$42, 270.00
Final Thoughts
The 2017 Honda Ridgeline AWD is a truck that is very comfortable, quick to drive, and offers full-size space in a mid-size package. The features it offers makes it one of the most capable mid-size trucks that can do the job of a truck and an SUV. Drawbacks on the Ridgeline is the fact that you do not have the option of choosing bed sizes or cabin layouts like other trucks. Having just FWD means the towing capacity drops to 3,500lbs.
But the biggest drawback that could hurt the Ridgelineâs sales number is how it looks. I do not think truck buyers will be comfortable switching from their F-Series and Duramax into the Ridgeline, unless they want a smaller truck to get around town in. I can see the Ridgeline becoming popular at school zones because of its ability to drive like a mini-van while having the benefits of a truck. The 2017 Honda Ridgeline AWD reminds me of an urban cowboy, the type of person that owns cowboy boots but never gets them dirty because they never leave the city. The Ridgeline is a good pickup truck, but itâs difficult to imagine it anywhere outside a concrete jungle.

Car Insurance Claim Help?
Car Insurance Claim Help? On the 4/7/2011 I was at a set of traffic lights that was (RED) of my way to the shops. As the lights went green I begin to move off slowly as I did another car came from the left of me and tried to turn right as he speed up he crashed into the drivers side of the car. He clearly jumped a red light (Clearly Seen on CCTV). I was in total shock at the time! After he crashed into my car he went to drive off by reversing, I jumped out of my car to stood in his was so he could not drive off the witness behind me called the police while I was stopping his from driving off he started to drive forwards trying to me me out the way. After the driver spoke to the police on the phone, he then gave me his Name, Phone number and Insurance information. The next day I called my insurance company they was vary helpful and I believe the clam would be settled in my favor as I had CCTV of the crash as I had a camera inside of my car and a witness that was behind my car at the time of the crash. After nearly 4Months I have now revived a letter stating that the claim has been closed on a Without Prejudice Basis. When I contacted Aviva to see what the 3rd party has not accepted full liability they said it was dealt with like this as the 3rd party who crashed into me was not responding to and calls or letters that have send him. Aviva did not asked to see the CCTV of the crash and did not take into account the witness statement. WHAT CAN I DOOO??""

Why do I have to pay to insure other people's children?
I have little compassion for those that say they cannot afford to insure their children. #1 - don't have children if you can't afford them; then don't expect me to pay for the ones you can't afford. #2 - it doesn't cost that much to insure a child; part of a parents responsibility is to sacrafice for the sake of their children. Case in point - I have an acquaintance whose parents both worked and they made just above the cut-off for getting government help for insurance. What did they do? They went out and bought 2 brand new motorcycles, helmets, chaps, gloves and boots, so they could take their little darling on wonderful family outings. That money would have went a long way to insuring them, huh? Am I unreasonable?""
Co-op smartbox for young drivers?
I am 18 and considering going through the co-op box scheme for young drivers. I was wondering whether this might affect my insurance premium. So for example if I drove around 5 hours a week, consistently, for a few months, and then went on a road trip and drove for 30 hours one week, would this raise my premium? I ask because on the quote page it asks for how long I'll be driving on a weekly basis. Do any current customers happen to know whether they care at all? Thank you in advance! :)""

Where can I get affordable insurance as a new Driver?

They have now replied back to me saying that they can't accept the no claims, as I have 2 SP30 (Motorway speeding) convictions within the last 5 years, which means they will not accept the no claims. The car I drive is currently registered in my father's name. It is covered by an automobile accident insurance policy paid for by my parents, along with their cars. Insurance with car or person in Georgia?
My wife has been allowing her father to use her car to work as a pizza delivery man while his car is getting fixed. We don't have her car listed as a business vehicle, but he says that if he wrecks it his insurance will cover it. I'm not sure if he is correct or not, but I don't know the law in Georgia. I'm afraid he'll get in a wreck and we'll get sued or have our insurance policy canceled. Is he correct? Thanks.""

Car Insurance Cancellation Question?
My father's car insurance was canceled for non-payment. He pays for the insurance every six months. Apparently they stopped mailing him bills and sent a bill to his email account. It was an old out of date email account. The sent the notice of cancellation to this email account as well. Since, he no longer has that email account he didn't get either notifications. He has 3 cars under this policy and has been a customer for over 30 years. The insurance company told him that he would have to pay for the months (Aug - Dec) that he was not covered in order to reinstate the policy. This seems unfair to me. He wasn't covered during those months and they wouldn't have paid a claim so why does he need to pay for it? Anyone with any advice would be greatly appreciated.""
