First Line: Seated in the council room of the Assassins' Keep, Celaena Sardothien leaned back in her chair.

The book starts out with The Assassin and the Pirate Lord. Celaena Sardothien and her rival, Sam Cortland, are sent to see Rolfe, the Pirate Lord of Skull's Bay. Arobynn Hamel, their master and the King of the Assassin's tells them that he wants them to demand payment for Rolfe killing some of his assassin's. When they arrive, however, they discover they are meant to be brokering a slave trade between Rolfe and Arobynn. Celaena and Sam are both appalled and set aside their rivalry in order to take down Rolfe and free 200 slaves. They succeed, and Celaena forces Rolfe to sign a document saying that he will never again participate in the slave trade, or she will hunt him down and kill him.

In the next story, The Assassin and the Healer, Celaena is in the town of Innish, on her way to the Red Desert to train with the Silent Assassins as punishment from Arobynn for having destroyed his deal with Rolfe. He beat her unconscious and then sent her on her way giving her two months to travel to and fro, and a month to be with the Silent Assassins. In Innish, she comes across a girl named Yrene, a former healer who lost her magic and her mother to Adarlan's empire. She had been working at the White Pig Inn for a year, hoping to save up enough money to travel to the southern continent and learn to become a healer at the Torre Cesme. While taking out the trash that night, Yrene is mugged by mercenaries, but Celaena fortunately comes to her rescue and kills the men. After Yrene wraps Celaena's wounds, Celaena teaches her how to defend herself. Just when they're about to be done, more mercenaries attack, and Celaena, with the help of Yrene, are able to fend them off. Celaena leaves Yrene a considerable sum of money and a large ruby to pay for her passage to the southern continent. Yrene leaves for the Torre Cesme immediately, and Celaena leaves for the Red Desert.

The Assassin and the Desert begins with Celaena trudging through the desert to reach the keep of the Silent Assassins. When she arrives, she is tested by the Mute Master by having four of his men attack her, all of which she easily fends off. He then passes her off to Ansel, a swaggering red head in full armor, and they share a room. Celaena is eager to begin training with the Mute Master, since Arobynn will not let her back until she returns with a sealed letter of approval. But she is told she must wait and spends her days running through the desert to the oasis and training with Ansel. The Silent Assassins are regularly antagonized by Lord Berick, the leader of Xandria, the port city to the south. Ansel is sent to Xandria to try and treaty with him after an attack, and Celaena goes with her. The girls become fast friends, especially after Ansel shares the true story of how she was a lady at Briarcliff, in the Flatlands of the abandoned Witch Kingdom, and a greedy lord killed her father and sister and burned her home to the ground. After the meeting with Lord Berick, Ansel and Celaena steal two of his Asterion horses, incredibly fast horses that were bred by the Fae. When they return, the Mute Master makes them take care of the animals every morning as punishment, but he does finally agree to train Celaena. He makes her study snakes, rabbits, bats, and other desert creatures to learn their movements so she can become a better fighter. Five days before Celaena is supposed to leave she and Ansel fight. As an apology, Ansel brings her some wine, but it was poisoned. She wakes up in the middle of the desert with her Asterion horse, a sealed letter of approval from the Mute Master, and a note from Ansel saying that she is doing this to protect her. Celaena begins to head towards Xandria to catch a ship, but sees Lord Berick's forces, marching towards the Keep. She races back, but they are already under attack. She runs to the Mute Master, and finds Ansel's lover dead, the Mute Master's son Ilias wounded, and the Mute Master paralyzed. Ansel stands over him about to behead him, but Celaena attacks. They fight, and Ansel reveals she killed her own lover, and made a deal with Lord Berick: the Mute Master's head and the assassins dead, and he will give her forces to go and reclaim Briarcliff. Celaena defeats her, and even though she is hurt by her betrayal, she gives her 20 minutes to get out of the Keep before she shoots her with an arrow. Celaena ends up giving her 21 minutes and purposefully misses, even though Ansel wasn't out of range. The Mute Master gives Celaena her sealed letter of approval, and also enough gold to free herself of her debt to Arobynn Hamel.

Celaena arrives back in Rifthold in The Assassin and the Underworld, planning to free herself from Arobynn once and for all and move into her own apartment. However, she returns to find Arobynn deeply remorseful of his actions, and he showers her with gifts and assigns her an assassination of an important Melisande man named Doneval. He tells her that Doneval is planning on exposing everyone in the nobility that doesn't support the slave trade, safe houses, and rebels. She says she'll think about it, and runs into Sam. She is relieved to see him in one piece, and begins to have a lot of feelings about him come forward as she remembers he promised to kill Arobynn while he was beating her. Just then, Lysandra, one of the courtesans owned by Arobynn's friend Clarisse, appears and begins flirting with Sam. Celaena agrees to kill Doneval, and attends the theatre, a ball held by his ex wife (the person who hired Celaena to kill him), and spies outside of his house in preparation. She attempts to break into his house to scope out where he will be meeting his contact and exchanging paperwork the day she is going to kill him, but is caught by his guards and tied to a chair in the sewers right before they're flooded. She manages to escape the chair, but almost drowns. Sam rescues her, and the next day he professes his love for her. They manage to assassinate Doneval, but Sam blows up his house and the documents Celaena was supposed to retrieve were lost. She chases after Doneval's contact, but he kills himself and sets the papers on fire before Celaena can retrieve them or interrogate him. From the remains of the papers, Celaena begins to piece together that she might have been lied to. She goes before Arobynn, who is angry at her for not retrieving the documents. He then reveals that Doneval's ex wife actually deals in the slave trade and wanted to be rich, and that is why she wanted her husband assassinated, as he was a rebel and planning on freeing the slaves. Arobynn tells her this was punishment for Skull's Bay, and Celaena pays her debt and Sam's with the gold she was given by the Mute Master and leaves.

In the final novella, The Assassin and the Empire, Sam and Celaena are living in their own apartment across the city. Sam is cage fighting in an underground tavern called the Vaults in order to make ends meet, and they can't find anyone to hire them. Sam and Celaena agree to move away from Rifthold, and they pay Arobynn the parting cost for breaking away from the Assassin's Guild, which takes away all of Celaena's savings. They agree to find one more contract before they go. Sam takes a contract from a mysterious man who wants Ioan Jayne and Roarke Farran, the leader and second of the criminal underworld of Rifthold, dead. Arobynn warns them against this, but Sam insists he takes out Farran on his own and then letting Celaena kill Jayne. Sam goes to kill Farran, and after hours of waiting, Arobynn arrives to tell Celaena that he is dead, his body tortured and ripped apart and left on the door step of the Assassin's Keep. Celaena goes to see his body and falls asleep next to it, and wakes up in her old room. She hears Arobynn and the other assassins conversing outside her door about going to kill Jayne and Farran, and then Arobynn locks her door. She escapes out the window, and breaks into Jayne's house, managing to kill him and several guards before they release poisonous gas. Farran hands her over to the Royal Guard, and she is sentenced to 9 lifetimes in Endovier. In the end, it is revealed that Arobynn was the one who betrayed them.

Celaena Sardothien (Dianna Brackyn, Adarlan's Assassin): Celaena definitely doesn't start off as the most likeable protagonist, both in this book as well as in Throne of Glass. She can be quite childish and selfish, and is easily manipulated. You see her start to grow through the book, however, and I think her character development is shown a lot better in this book than in Throne of Glass.

Sam Cortland: Sam and Celaena's romance felt like it came out of nowhere for me, since it was established multiple times how much they previously hated each other.

Arobynn Hamel (The King of the Assassins): Arobynn is definitely an awesome antagonist. You can get really confused and feel for him, as he seems genuine in his emotions, but deep down he is selfish and it always hurts just as bad every time his true colors and intentions show.

Storyline: All of the novellas are well written, cohesive, and don't drag on for too long, while still not feeling rushed. As you get later into the series you realize that SJM brings back a lot of these characters and connects them to the larger plot (Yrene, Ansel, and Rolfe to name a few). While I did feel like Sam and Celaena's relationship was a little forced, it didn't overtake the plot in any way, and it helped Celaena's character growth.

Representation: There is not a lot of good representation in this book unfortunately, Yrene being the only person of color I can think of.

Summary: While Throne of Glass is a little bit of a rocky start, I think The Assassin's Blade comes in to perfectly tie everything together and give a lot of insight on Celaena's past.

#108: Keeping At It

Writing a book or even a short story is daunting, extremely daunting when you look at it for the very first time. It’s not that there aren’t enough resources. The Internet is full of advice from seasoned pros and people just starting out alike. There are way more books on writing than one could and should, really, ever read. Where do I start? How can I ever take all that information in? Do writers really think about all that in that much detail? That’s impossible!

Where do you begin? I’d argue that it doesn’t matter. You start doing something, then learn some other things. You may start being a pantser and then learn the benefits of outlining and never look back. You may read this one book and swear by it for several years until you read a different one and change your mind in an afternoon. It’s just part of the process. Over time, you try a bunch of things. Some will work; some will suck. You’ll keep those that served you well.

If you keep at it for a while, you realise that there, in fact, isn’t impossible at all. It really is, as Neil Gaiman puts it, about sitting down at the keyboard and putting one word after the other until it’s done. Writing a book is a hugely demanding and complicated process, but there is an odd simplicity to it as well.

You finish a few pieces eventually, submit them, get rejected. Next, you’ll get super excited about a new project. If that goes well, you’re thinking. It might be the next Hunger Games. You spend several months on it and never finish. You realise that there will always be people way ahead if you, and you will never be able to learn it all or do it as well as you’d hope to. If writing were a straight line to success, everyone would be a writer. Nobody said it would be easy.

You just have to keep at it. You have to keep showing up, keep facing the blank page. And that’s the hardest part.

You keep hearing about perseverance. On a podcast, a writer mentions that it took her seven years to finish her first book. Another says that he drafted six full-length novels before breaking out. Then you read a story of a writer that kept writing story after story for 12 years before being picked up by a publisher at last. It takes time, sure, but it’s hard to appreciate just how bloody long 12 years are until you go through the process yourself. It really sucks when you’re on year four, and there are eight more to go. And who knows? Success might be two years out, or 25.

Writing is a journey. And to be on a journey, you have to keep going. I hope that this short essay will help you with that. And if it does, please pass it on.

What I am reading

Ever time I pick up a self-help book that was written a few decades or even thousands of years ago, it strikes me just how similar things were back then. Last year, I read Letters from a Stoic by Seneca. In one of the letters, he writes about Romans keeping a slave who was in charge of their exercise routine.

What? Isn’t that the thing that all modern executives in New York City do these days? Have a personal trainer to follow them around to essentially keep them alive?

Of course, slavery and employment are two fundamentally different things for the individuals, but from the perspective of society and its structure, some things seem eerily similar to me.

The book I’m reading at the moment was written in the 1960s by Peter Drucker. One of the points he makes early on is that meetings are almost always a total waste of everybody’s time. Well, that exactly is the mantra of the Red Bull fuelled development teams at any Silicon Valley’s startup. Back in the 60s, a computer filled an entire multi-level basement and was probably slower than your phone today.

Technology might have made giant leaps forward in the past 150 and particularly the last 30 years of the Internet. We went from steam engines to self-driving, electric cars, but a lot of the problems stayed the same. We may feel that the generations before us lived primitive lives (I mean, what did they even do without the Internet?), but things are probably a lot closer than we think.

A continuation of this.

After her week in Akron, Santana goes back home and gets ready to start camp. It’s always an odd sort of experience for her, since the counselors form a tight knit group, and she always exists on the outside, but she loves the kids, and that’s why she goes back every summer. It’s a better job than most have, and she’s glad her dad was able to get it for her from someone he knew through the hospital. More than that, she’s glad she has some kind of long lasting work experience to put on her resume, when she starts applying to graduate school in just a few short years.

On the first day of camp, Santana sends Brittany one of those cheesy mirror shots of her in her khaki shorts and bright blue t-shirt. Brittany had been begging for it all week, and Santana figured she’d oblige by getting it to her before she even left the house. She doesn’t really have time to be on her phone all day—there are kids to watch in the pool, after all—and she knows it’s going to feel weird after weeks of talking constantly on the phone while they’re doing the most mundane tasks. She’s going to miss her, that’s for sure, but the summer will go a lot faster when she’s actually doing something, rather than sitting around the house waiting to go back to school.

Getting the kids into their first day is always an adventure. Some of the little ones cry, and Santana always ends up with someone or another on her lap, calming them down in between baseball and swimming. She has the five year old group this year, and she working mostly with this guy Ryder and a girl Jane. Jane is going to NYU at the end of the summer, so she asks Santana about forty-thousand questions about it. It’s weird, and maybe it’s because she’s one of the older counselors, but she feels more...friendly than she’s ever been in the past.

The day goes by quickly, and she’s surprised at the end of it when Ryder invites her to come to the diner with a bunch of the others. Normally she’s anxious to get home and get in the shower, but she feels like maybe she should try to be sociable. She calls her mom to let her know that she won’t be home for dinner, and then she goes to her car to Skype Brittany, knowing that she’s waiting for her to get home so that they can talk.

“Hi gorgeous.” Brittany grins through the phone. “How was your first day?”

“It was...a little hectic. We’ll get into the groove though. Hopefully by next week, I’ll actually be able to read my book at lunchtime without ten kids crying for their moms.”

“Oh, man. I never went to camp, so I can’t even imagine how sucky it is when you’re tiny.”

“I actually went every summer. With both of my parents working, and my grandmother not really feeling having me all day every single day, camp was the only choice.”

“Did you like it?”

“Eh...I mean, it was fine. As you know, outdoor activities aren’t exactly my favorite.”

“Which is why I think it’s so cute that you’re a counselor.”

“I’d mostly pack a bunch of books in my backpack and read them everywhere I could. I’d do everything in my power to get benched whenever we played sports. I had more imaginary ankle injuries than any other person on the planet.”

“That’s really adorable actually.”

“How was your day?”

“I’ve kept up my totally uninterrupted schedule of laying on the pool deck, and Kitty and I had margaritas before.”

“It’s summer.” Brittany laughs. “I had to find something to do all day, while I didn’t have anyone to narrate shopping in the grocery store for me.”

“I wish I could narrate my whole camp day for you. I missed you a lot today.”

“I missed you too. What are you doing now?”

“I, um actually got invited out with some of the counselors for camp. Which I know is super weird, since that basically never happens. But there’s this kid Ryder who’s kinda decent, and this girl Jane who’s going to NYU in the fall, so I guess they just figured they’d invite me.”

“Aww Babes, that sounds fun.”

“Yeah, I guess so...I mean I probably have absolutely nothing in common with them besides camp, but we’ll see how it goes.”

“Call me after then?”

“Of course. How am I supposed to fall asleep without you on the phone?”

“Since you always pass out early, probably pretty easy.”

“You know I need my beauty sleep.”

“No, you definitely don’t. You’re beautiful enough without it.”

Smiling at the home screen on her phone after Brittany hangs up, Santana plugs the phone into the stereo, and drives to the diner. She really does feel gross and sweaty after a long day of camp, but since no one else was going home to change first, she didn’t want to be the only one. She pulls her hair up in a tighter ponytail and wipes residue from her glasses before she goes inside. Everyone beat her there, given her phone conversation, and she finds a big, loud group at a table in the back.

“Uh, hey everyone.” She takes an empty seat, and picks at her cuticles.

“Santana!” Ryder cheers. “You came! Guys, you all know Santana Lopez?”

There’s sort of a half-hearted acknowledgement around the table, and Santana flushes. She thinks part of it is that she’s always been a virulent rule follower, and she’s never snuck off to make out with someone in the middle of the day, and some of it might just be her personality. But either way, she bristles a little at the lukewarm welcome, and she buries her face in a menu, trying to decide what she should order, and trying to not feel hurt that no one is exactly excited she came. She’s been an outcast her whole life, but maybe it stings more now that she’s found someone to fit in with, she’s not sure.

Most of dinner is painful for Santana. She talks to Ryder and Jane, she tells them about Brittany when they ask if she’s dating anyone, but she doesn’t really engage with anyone else, and she feels like she can hear whispers whenever her back is turned. When she finally gets back out to her car, she feels a deep sense of relief, and she takes a few breaths, trying not to get upset that it didn’t go that well. She won’t go again, she knows that, but maybe part of her had hoped that this year would be different. Part of her had hoped that college would have changed things for her. Sighing heavily, she plugs her phone in, and she calls Brittany.

“Hey Babes, how was dinner?”

“I miss you so much.” Santana feels a single tear roll down her cheek. “I miss New York.”

“Oh no! Was it bad? Do I have to figure out the way to commit the perfect murder when I get to Lima?”

“No...it wasn’t...no one did anything. It’s just like...I don’t know.”

“Hey, are you driving?”

“Not yet.” She shakes her head, though Brittany can’t see her. “Why?”

“You’re just upset, and I don’t want you to drive when you’re upset.”

“I’m fine, I’m just being stupid.”

“I don’t think it’s stupid to be upset if you had a crappy night. Do you want to talk about it?”

“It was just...really clear that almost everyone didn’t want me there. I miss what it feels like to go out where people don’t know me, but it’s still fun. I hate that you’re far away, I want a hug from you.”

“Do you want me to get in the car? Because seriously, I’ve got nothing going on, I could be to Lima in a few hours.”

“No. That’s crazy. I have work all week, and I’m going to see you next weekend. I just need to hear your voice right now. “I don’t even know, that’s beside the point. I just know that I feel like one half time time. This is why I spend so much time on the computer. People get me there.” Santana starts her car, and puts it in reverse to get the hell out of the diner parking lot.

“I get that. I think you’re just too special for a place like ignorant Lima.”

“It’s just dumb. I’m nineteen, I shouldn’t even be worried about stuff like this. It’s not like when I was fifteen and it felt like the world was against me. I like who I am, I shouldn’t care.”

“I’m glad you like who you are.” Brittany says softly. “Because I’d hate for these losers to make you any less than the amazing you are.”

It both hurts and makes me happy to see these pics, but for now it mostly hurts and I seriously have to bite my bottom lip to not start crying. Cuz people who should be there as well, aren't on the photos. Cuz I know this is the least season. And I seriously cannot imagine to not wait for a new ep or a new season of Teen Wolf.

When I first heard about it, I thought it would be a boring mix of already existing series I disliked. I remember I even saw one or half an ep at some point, completely out of context, which made it boring and strange for me, still it totally escapes me how I could not just fall in love with Stiles right away, but somehow it happened. So about two years later I flip through a TV mag (which I have not done in ages!) and realize they will be airing TW back from ep 1 again, so I tell my best friend that we need to watch it. We have this thing sometimes when we are both tired and just wanna watch shit on TV; we will pick trash monster movies and just laugh our asses off. So May 26th, 2015, 11:30pm (yes, I remember that!) my friend is about to turn off the TV and I am like ‘NOO! Trash night, remember??’ and she sits back onto her chair and we await things to come. I should add that in addition to low expectations, TW was aired on a German channel that … let us say is not known for high quality stuff or intelligent content, so why would this be an exception, eh? Boy, were we wrong!

Expecting nothing, getting everything!!

During the first half of ep 1 we look at each other with embarrassment and shyly confess that it is not only not as half as bad as we thought, but actually GOOD! They aired three eps in a row, after 2 ½ my mate gets tired and goes to bed, I run over to my room, watch the rest of it and then go online to look for more. I bingewatch until 106, meanwhile it is about 4:30am and I start to doze off then BOOM! Major cliffhanger, I am broad awake again and almost go crazy because I cannot find any working link for 107, so I finally go to imdb to see if Derek makes it, cuz I just wanna see if Tyler Hoechlin is still in the show and not get spoiled by details.

For the next years I am hooked! Teen Wolf is the first series I get active about on twitter and tumblr, I spend hours and hours rewatching the eps, looking for fanvids, interviews, convention vids etc.! I can recite the eps, I can even recite entire parts of conventions, of interviews, BTS! I fall in love with the lovely, super talented, amazing creator and most humble human being Jeff Davis, with O’Brosey and their beautiful friendship that started when they met at the auditions and I am hyper thinking about how two best friends play two best friends. It is new for me to be able to not only watch a series and maybe have friends near me liking it as well, but the entire possibilities the internet offers, too. It feels so much more being part of it, being part of the giant, beautiful Teen Wolf family that is out there.

I have liked a lot of series, but the three most important from my teenie years till now are ‘If Tomorrow Comes’, Buffy and TEEN WOLF and I found the latter about such a long period as 20 years after Buffy. Teen Wolf means SO much to me, it has accompanied both me and my friend through a lot; it was our anchor – no pun intended. Whatever the day brought, we knew at night we would forget all about the stress and bad times and worries, relax and delve into the world of Beacon Hills. Whenever I feel bad I watch the first ep again, I even have it on my phone, cuz these characters, the setting, the plot just gets to me in a way I cannot even properly describe. It touches my heart. Like deep!

I may not be happy with especially 5A and some bigger or smaller things, cast leaving and not coming back, but still I look forward to each new ep and a childish, stubborn part of me still hopes for a 7th season with Jeff directing it and Dylan O’Brien being in every single ep again.

I could go on for ages about this series – and I have not even started talking about my love for Stalia or Sterek! :D I am happy that there is still 6B to come, I try to not think about how my most beloved character will probably be absent most of the time and that after that it will be a wrap. I can still watch everything again and again and I will have all those beautiful memories about it. It felt good to write all of this down and makes me feel less like a sourwolf.^^

The Rise of eSports

Video games have been on the rise for quite some time and only continue to grow every day. New video games are released each and every year, and along with these new games, new choices in eSports emerge. I had the opportunity to speak with Alex Hicks, the owner of an eSports organization known as Rebirth, to see some of his views on the rise of eSports itself and how they have impacted his life as an eSports owner.

eSports is the term used for competitive video gaming. Modern-day eSports have grown massively since their debut, and still continue to grow to this day. “eSports has definitely gotten way bigger than say, when it was just the COD (Call of Duty) scene or LoL (League of Legends),” stated Hicks, “like you’d barely hear it on TV or there would be no watch parties for certain leagues like the Overwatch League, and it’s just getting really popular right now.” This is very true. eSports only applied to a few choice games back in the day, and now there are thousands upon thousands of games to choose from now. Granted, not all of them are competitive, but a majority of video games are. One comparison to this that may not be that obvious is physical sports. eSports have actually begun to surpass physical sports in many ways, be it the enjoyment of the crowd, the outreach, and even the viewer-base as a whole. Hicks agrees with this statement, saying that “it’s already out-viewed the NBA and that just absolutely amazes me. It’s just going to keep growing.” I checked the numbers and he’s correct; in fact, just within the past two years, eSports has surpassed even some of the largest yearly sporting events. Take, for instance, the 2017 League of Legends World Championship. The total amount of viewers rose to more than 106 million for one single event. The 2018 Kentucky Derby only amassed 15 million viewers. That is more than seven times smaller than the LoL Championship. I think it’s safe to assume that eSports isn’t going to die down for a while, if at all. But why does it just keep growing?

We happen to be living at the peak of the technological age. Technology has been growing for decades and is still growing and getting better every year, maybe even every day. The rise of technology coincides with the rise of eSports as well. “More technology means more games. The more games you get, the more eSports you get,” said Hicks, “more games equals more eSports, equals more tournaments, more money that people are going to want to grind and play more games and get a future in technology and gaming.” That last part also explains a lot: money. People love money, it’s our human nature. The great thing about technology today is that we continuously find more ways to speed things up and become more cost-effective. Everyone wants the best computer or console so they can play the highest-quality games so they can make even more money and do it all over again when the next “big thing” comes out. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does show us a bit of insight as to how much we think about technology in today’s society.

As far as lending our lives to the system, we can still use it to our advantage. When it comes to Rebirth, Hicks, though only age 16, spends most of his time organizing the multiple teams within the organization. Some of this organizing goes into running the system, checking and making sure all of the social media is in place, making sure the staff knows how to handle their respective spots, and even helps to recruit new players. “Since I run an EU and NA team, I’m up from like 6am to 2am every night, just trying to get things running and get things organized. It’s definitely very time consuming and if you ever want to go into that part of industry you have to be willing to put forth the effort,” says Hicks. When asked about the growth of technology as well, Hicks simply said, “I’m pretty young to be an eSports owner, but I grew up with technology so I already know my kids are going to grow up with even more technology than I did.” In this statement, he implies how much technology has grown in such a short amount of time and acknowledges how much it’s expected to grow.

The plus side with eSports and technology going hand-in-hand is that there are more ways for people to view and experience eSports. Teenagers and young adults alike are beginning to influence their parents to watch eSports with them. “I see on Twitter all the time how people get their moms and dads who don’t know a lick about video games or eSports to watch, let’s say, the Overwatch League on TV which is actually now on--I believe--ESPN eSports,” says Hicks. Along with this, people may possibly start treating eSports like normal physical sports in the sense of their fanbase. On this topic, Hicks said, “You’re also going to get, like in actual sports, the bandwagon. You hop on the whoever’s-doing-great-right-now type thing, and in eSports, there’s no stopping it. You’re going to see people who don’t know a lick about video games finally getting into that because they just want to rep their city, rep their team.”

eSports has been around for quite a while and is loved by many, but it has only just begun. This is due to our rise of technology and game development. The beauty in eSports is that it gives a great opportunity to those involved and can even end up changing their life for the better. The thing is, it’s all about how much you want to be incorporated into the world of eSports. In one final thought, Hicks said this: “I definitely want to say if you want to be in anything in eSports, you have to be willing to put forth the time and effort that you would do in a physical sport.” That, I believe, is the greatest message of all.

For those of you who do not know me I thought Id write a little about myself. I have been fighting cancer for nearly 10 years now, I used to run a local charcoal chicken shop in town but had to resign from that instantly when I found out I had an aggressive Mouth & Oesophagus Cancer in July, 2009.

I was operated on 24 hours after that diagnose and didn't return home for another 4 months only to have another week home and than travel down to Melbourne for Radiation therapy treatment, I came home 3 months later and I was told to expect to die within a four year time period so my hopes weren't exactly high back then and I was told to make the best of what time I had left with my family, partner & children.

My life has never been been the same since that day and to everyone's surprise including myself I have survived this long. I developed necrosis in October, 2015 from having to much radiation therapy which meant I had radiation poisoning and by the time my condition was diagnosed again it was pretty serious. My left side of my jaw had four break in it my chin 2 and the right side of my jaw had completely disintegrated. So major surgery again and once again I had to put my life on hold again and another 3 month stay in hospital and 18 months recovering from the surgery.

I am still having surgeries done to have my lower face , mouth and pallet reconstitution I now need due to the fact the surgery Id initially had done to give me time was done by learner and hadn't been done correctly. I have also been un tongue tied as he had sewed the underneath of my tongue on backwards after they cut it in half so am slowly regaining some of my speech and eating and although they will never be the same again i'm alive and have some function, my weight fluctuates to much but to be honest Im just happy to be alive for whatever time I have left on this earth with those I love and who are in my life now.

I lost a lot of friends and even a few family members during my struggle to live not because I was dying but more the fact they didn't know how to cope to with it or had to much going on there own lives to fit me in. I've had a total of 34 operations now so far and have another 2 Im about to face early next year in 2019, I see my plastic surgeon again next week for more news on that one. 

I dont have a survivor status yet again as I lost that in 2015 & have another 2 years to on that one before I call myself a survivor again but I already consider myself there as one especially as Im still alive 9 years later & nearly 10 years on my diagnosis. At times I get a little depressed and yes feel sorry for myself mainly because I was no longer earning an income’as I've worked all my life and having buried and lost a lot of family during this time with the age Im now at and is to be expected but it still hurts and no mater how long time goes you miss those you bury.

From all of this struggle I have crochet and knitted, especially with spending so much time in hospital and at home it gave me something to do taking my mind off a lot of it all including the pain. Home time has also meant a heck of a lot of therapy for speech, lymphodema therapy and physiotherapy. i have learnt to walk on a leg with the back none missing from lower right leg so instead of 2 bones in that leg I have only 1 as that was what they used to make a new jaw for me. 

   A new technique devised by the 6 surgeons who flew in to work on me from through out the world that was to be 24 hour surgery but they pulled me out at 18 hours due to blood flow difficulties and not finished which is why I cant be fully finished now. My cheek was reconstructed from  muscle in my shoulder and ive had numerous skin grafts so far one more to go again yet though early in 2019. Those scar I wear with pride to be honest and being a part of new techniques being the guinea pig has been both exciting & frighting.

From all this pain, death, travel to hospitals and my interest with wool growing I've gone from crochet & knitting to dying wool and am now learning to spin wool. Something I hope to earn an income from for the rest of my living life. I didn't initially choose wool as an income but more for therapy but from that gift of life and living, my friends & family Casz’s Country crafts was born and I am slowly putting my business together on line through Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and of course Tumbler.

Casz’s Country Craft’s is slowly growing with support from all of you online. I now have a blog called Wednesday’s Pattern Pick’s where after a lot of internet searching I find free patterns to post which you are able to download free in PDF format, there is also  no  subscription for this as Im unable to do it every week but will do it as often as I can on a Wednesday so it’s there for everyone to access on a Thursday.

The same cancer killed my father at 59 which is how old I am, my grandfather died at 42 from  a brain tumour and I lost my other grandparents, nan and pop with only my mother and 1 aunt still surviving so not a lot of family remaining now, my mum says shes going to live to 106 I believe her as my grandmother was 99. Ramblings: Rookie seasons for Pettersson, Zadina, Dahlin, and More – September 13

Last night was the televised season opener from Humboldt, Saskatchewan a mere five months following the tragic accident that claimed 16 lives. It was a moving evening and was handled very well by TSN. Let’s hope the families, team, and community can start to put the pieces together after such a devastating event.

Everyone loves rookies! Those shiny new toys that are the Christmas presents of fantasy sports. What’s in the box? It could be anything!

Here’s the thing about rookies: there is a lot of randomness. Just look at 2017-18: Mathew Barzal had the best rookie year in a decade; Yanni Gourde had 64 points; Brock Boeser could have managed 35 goals on a bad team has he stayed healthy; Mikhail Sergachev cracked 40 points playing 15 minutes a game as a 19-year old defenceman. It’s not to say those things were out of the realm of possibility, as Barzal was always looked at as very talented, Gourde was underappreciated, those who scouted Boeser knew he had a lethal release, and Sergachev was highly-touted. But to expect any one of those things, let alone all four, is unrealistic.

It’s important to be realistic in fantasy drafts. Upside needs to be considered if everything goes right and that’s part of swinging for the fences in the mid-to-late portion of drafts, but picking players based on expecting that upside is a quick trip to 8th place.

With that in mind, I wanted to discuss this year’s rookie crop. I’m not going to discuss every rookie, or even most rookies; you should grab the Dobber Prospects Report if you want a more detailed look at hundreds of players. Instead, I want to look at a handful of players who will be considered in drafts.

Before we get into individual players, do a mental exercise. Think of the all the top rookies from the last few years. Which traits do they share? Think of Barzal, Keller, Gourde, Boeser, Panarin, Gostisbehere, Laine, Werenski, Aho, Marner, and Nylander. (I’m excluding Matthews, McDavid, and Eichel here for obvious reasons.) By and large, those players satisfied at least one of two conditions to achieve the success they did:

Goal-scoring binge

Top PP minutes

Predicting a goal-scoring binge is a waste of time (if you want to predict any rookie to shoot 18 percent, go ahead). For many rookies to have success, they need top PP minutes. Keep that in mind as we go through these players.

  Rasmus Dahlin

My projection: 5.1 goals, 16.6 assists, 130.1 shots, 98 hits, 6.2 PPPs

Oh boy.

Back in July, I wrote about why I won’t be drafting Dahlin this year. Let’s get into that.

The first question is if Dahlin will get top PP minutes. We can assume that Buffalo will be running a four-forward again this year, so the question is if he will push Rasmus Ristolainen out of the way. Ristolainen is fifth among all defencemen in power play points over the last three seasons, ahead of names like Torey Krug, PK Subban, Drew Doughty, John Klingberg, and John Carlson. Say what you will of Ristolainen as a player in every other facet, he’s been the go-to for years on the PP blue line for the Sabres, and he’s been effective at doing so; Buffalo is eighth in PP goals over those three seasons, two goals fewer than San Jose and three goals more than Dallas, and seventh in PP percentage. Does that suddenly change this year? Why would it?

I’m working with the assumption that Dahlin, barring injury, will not supplant Ristolainen on the power play this year.

So if he’s not on the top PP unit, maybe he’ll have a season like Sergachev, right? Well, Tampa scored 3.15 goals per 60 minutes at even strength last year. Buffalo scored 2.03. That’s 75 fewer goals. Sergachev registered a point on 11.1 percent of all of Tampa’s even-strength goals. If Buffalo’s scoring doesn’t improve, to get to 24 even-strength points like Sergachev, Dahlin would have to register a point on 17.1 percent of Buffalo’s even-strength goals. For reference, Victor Hedman registered a point on 16.3 percent of Tampa’s even-strength goals. You see how silly this is getting.

So what if Buffalo’s scoring does improve? If the team scored 25 percent more goals at even strength, which is a huge leap, they’d still be bottom-10 in scoring if the league’s scoring remains constant. *If* the scoring jumps 25 percent at even strength, do you really want to draft an 18-year old defenceman with limited PP minutes from a bottom-10 scoring team?

I’m sorry, I just don’t see it. He may be the next Erik Karlsson, but to pay off his ADP right now (106) in standard Yahoo! leagues, assuming he doesn’t put up triple-digit hits, he’ll need a season like Alex Pietrangelo had last year. If he does put up triple-digit hits, he’ll need a season like Kris Letang had last year. This is all absurd.

Oh, and about my projection? Does that seem low? Consider this: One (1) (!!!) 18-year old defenceman in the last 25 years has managed 5 goals, 16 assists, and 130 shots in a season.

  Andrei Svechnikov

My projection: 22.2 goals, 23.3 assists, 164.9 shots, 36 hits, 13.9 PPPs

This one is a lot more interesting.

There’s no doubt that Svechnikov has all the tools to be a future superstar. Can he be fantasy-relevant this year?

My projection for the 18-year old sniper-to-be has him just outside my top-150 skaters, so yes, it would seem he should be relevant this year. He comes in as my 38th right winger, but that is going with my data which assigns one singular position. If some of the dual-eligibility right wingers are moved to centre, he’s a starting player in leagues that start three RWs.

The question is the power play time. As I mentioned in my Ramblings on Tuesday, for now, I still have Justin Faulk spending most of his time on PP1 with Dougie Hamilton. I know they ran four-forward PP units last year but with a new coach in town I decided to be conservative. Will Svechnikov be the fourth forward on the top PP unit if that’s what they use, or will it be someone like Victor Rask or Justin Williams.

I currently have Svechnikov as a tweener on the PP. In other words, not a fixture of the top PP unit, but with some exposure.

Svechnikov’s ADP is a lot more palatable than Dahlin’s. He won’t be going in the first 10 rounds of a 12-teamer and can likely be HAD beyond the 12th round. He comes close to returning value at that ADP just off my projection, and he’s definitely a player who can go on a scoring binge and pop close to 30.

  Filip Zadina

My projection: 17.6 goals, 19.4 assists, 11.1 PPPs, 158.9 shots, 27 hits

To be brief: if the Red Wings don’t have Henrik Zetterberg around this year – and it certainly looks like he won’t be – I don’t know how it’s possible to draft Zadina in standard 12-teamers. He won’t be on the top line, which means he won’t be skating with any of Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, or Gustav Nyquist. Who’s left? Frans Nielsen? Darren Helm? Justin Abdelkader? Andreas Athanasiou? I like AA and all, but with them experimenting him at centre, I’m not sure how that works out.

Zadina has the look of a player who will be a prolific scorer in the league, but that’s a 2-3 years down the road. For this year, given his even-strength line mates and split PP time, I don’t want to rely on him. He could always just go on a scoring tear but I don’t want to rely on that, either.

  Casey Mittelstadt

My projection: 16.6 goals, 20.1 assists, 6.3 PPPs, 149.3 shots, 26 hits

Mittelstadt is running into the same problem as Dahlin: if he’s not on Buffalo’s top PP unit, how much value is there?

Consider that last year, Buffalo ran Ryan O’Reilly, Kyle Okposo, Sam Reinhart, and Jack Eichel on the top PP unit most of the year. Each of those players had at least 20 PPPs. There were five other forwards with at least 25 total PP minutes, and those five forwards combined for 24 PPPs, and no single player cracked double-digits.

My projection has Mittelstadt for 30.4 even-strength points. That’s a good year! As I mentioned on Twitter a couple days ago, in 2017-18, O’Reilly had 34, Bryan Little had 31, and Mikko Koivu and Kyle Turris each had 30. But if Mittelstatd is stuck on the second PP unit all year, and he probably will be unless there’s an injury, how much on top of those 30.4 even-strength points can we expect?

That’s why I can’t draft Mittelstadt in standard 12-teamer this year. He’s a centre-only designated rookie with no clear path to top PP minutes. His ADP is legitimately around players like Nico Hischier and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Does Mittelstadt have the same upside, let alone floor, as those players in 2018-19?

  Elias Pettersson

My projection: 20.1 goals, 32.7 assists, 19.1 PPPs, 166.7 shots, 35 hits

Were I to draft only one rookie this year, Elias Pettersson is the guy.

There is a clear path to playing time on the top PP unit here thanks to the retirement of the Sedins. Assuming the top unit has Bo Horvat, Brock Boeser, and Alex Edler, there are two forward spots to fill. Pettersson and Gagner seems to be the likely duo.

Of course, the question is whether the PP can be productive without the Sedins. Vancouver was eighth in the NHL in goals/60 minutes on the power play, ahead of teams like Colorado, San Jose, and Nashville. As long as the top PP unit is heavily-used, though, the PPTOI volume should cushion the blow if the PP efficiency falls off. Last year, Dallas was around 20th in goals/60 minutes and the three pillars of their top unit all had 20+ PPPs. Florida was in the same boat and had three guys at 17+. Buffalo had four players at 20+ even at 22nd in goals/60 minutes. Should the efficiency fall off without the Brothers Sedin, as long as the top unit can push total minutes, they should be fine.

I will admit I’m nervous about Pettersson’s even-strength projection. If he doesn’t skate on the top line, there really isn’t much to help out scoring-wise unless someone like Jonathan Dahlen breaks out. However, if the PP minutes are there – and they should be – it provides a sort of insurance on production.

Pettersson also has centre-only designation and that hurts. The nice thing is his ADP will be at a spot where in 12-team leagues he can be drafted as a third centre, if not a bench option. His skills are undeniable and he should be a lock on the top PP unit. He’s the guy you want as a rookie this year.

  I won’t dig deep into him but in 12-team leagues, Eeli Tolvanen is going to be basically free in drafts. I have him projected as a bench winger in leagues of this size, and you’ll be able to draft him as a bench winger. That gives you some flexibility to hold or cut based on his usage after the first few weeks.

There are many others to talk about like Miro Heiskanen, Dylan Sikura, Robert Thomas, and a host of others. As mentioned earlier, might I recommend the 2018 Dobber Prospects Report?

We wanted to switch from the local company we had been insuring our house with because their correspondance has always been very rude and they are very difficult to deal with to USAA who we do all of our banking, brokerage, car & boat insurance through and are very courteous and extremely easy to deal with. We were denied coverage because our home does not have central air or heating. We live in South Central Florida so a heating system would be an absolute waste of money (the wall unit in the Great Room and a space heater in the bedroom are more than sufficient to make the house hospitable in the few welcome days of winter cold enough to warrant their use). My wife and I both cannot stand Air Conditioning and would never use Central A/C other than the one or two times a year we would normally turn on our wall unit when it is too hot to bear and the windows and doors cannot be left open. Houses have existed for Milleniums prior to the invention of Central Climate Control and I am sure home insurance existed atleast a few decades before the invention of air conditioning. Why would not having central climate control be a disqualifying factor in getting home insurance coverage? The plan today was to provide a brief review of Atlantis before my “MLS Musings” post.  But then I got typing, as I often do, and the “brief” review just kept going!

By the time I got to 1,200 words, I realized I’d be saving the MLS Musings for next Friday.

This post does have at least one thing in common with the topic of real estate, however, and that’s the inherent negativity that exists in all reviews…

Was I really away on vacation?

It sure doesn’t feel like it…

The week after your vacation is always three times as busy as the week preceding the trip, and Atlantis feels like it was a year ago.

A reader asked me for a brief recap of the trip, but surely by now, you guys know nothing I say is brief.

Feedback, commentary, and opinions on hotels, resorts, restaurants, and almost everything in the service industry are almost always inherently negative, so while I will say, “I had a great time,” and “I would definitely go again,” let me regale you with my long list of complaints first.

If it bleeds, it leads.  And happy stories don’t make the news.  So why should a review of a glorious Caribbean resort be any different, right?

Let’s start from the very beginning…

Atlantis has a shuttle that picks you up at the airport and takes you directly to the resort, but as the parents of a 17-month-old child, we wondered, “Does the shuttle have child seats?”

The answer, of course, is no.

And as my wife was told on the phone, “You don’t need a child seat in Bahamas.  It’s not mandatory.”

Not mandatory.  But preferable?  This is supposed to be a 5-star resort; we were shocked that they’d encourage us to overlook the safety of our kids, but oh well.

We decided to hire another service to take us to and from the airport, partially because of the child-seat issue, but also so we could stop at a grocery store and liquor store before we hit the resort.  As I’ll explain later, that was a more important journey than we thought it would be.

Having taken the 7am flight, we arrived at the resort around 1pm, tired already, and looking forward to unpacking and getting settled.  We were told by the front desk, “Check-in isn’t until 4pm,” but I figured that was more of a general rule.  How many times have you got to a hotel or motel and they said, “Oh, actually, look – your room is ready”?

We wandered around the sprawling and intimidating resort for 90 minutes, then went back to the desk, only to be told, again, that our room wasn’t ready.  2:30pm?  Really?  The room wasn’t ready?

My wife was in that, “Please don’t do this again” space, hoping I’d get down with “island time” and relax a little.

When we went back to the desk at 3:45pm, and were told the room wasn’t ready, I just about lost it.  But then I remembered I was supposed to relax, so I did.  I relaxed against the wall next to the front desk, and stared at the clock.  For 13 minutes.  Until at 3:58pm, magically, the person at the front desk said, “Mr. Fleming?  Your room is ready.”

Our room wasn’t ready, however.  Not for habitation.

We opened the front door, and like a punch in the face, the smell of cleaning products hit us.

The carpet was damp.  It was clear that they had put a lot of effort into cleaning the room, I’ll give them that.  But nothing was dry.  It was like a steam room, and you could see moisture on every surface.  Even the TV had streaks from cleaning products.

We explored the resort a little more, and soon realized that the “perfect resort for kids” had no ramps for strollers, and only three elevators.  The entire resort is full of husband-and-wife teams, carrying their strollers down the stairs like contestants on American Gladiators.

The resort is full of these little shacks that serve light and healthy meals like hamburgers, nachos and cheese, pizza, french fries, and hot dogs, but looking for something a little more our speed for the first night, and hoping to get out of the sweltering heat, we asked if there was anywhere we could just sit down?

Go to Mosaic, we were told, and so we did.

Hiking up and down paths that seemed to lead nowhere, with positively no idea where we were going (“up there, right, then left, then right,” is what we were told), we found Mosaic after about a half hour.

Once inside the beautiful, air-conditioned restaurant that didn’t have a single person inside, we were quite relieved to say the least.  It was exactly what we wanted after a long day of travel, and forced walking.  Just a nice, cool place to grab a quick bite and then get back to the room to put our daughter to bed.

Little did I know, the restaurant opened at 5:30pm.  We arrived at 5:31pm.

My wife and I took turns going to the massive buffet, looking for what our daughter could, would, should eat, and helping ourselves as well.

We were probably in there for twenty minutes, and when we asked for the bill, the waitress looked at us a little funny.

A few minutes later when I opened the billfold, I realized why.

$144 U.S.

For two people, because children under 2-years-old eat free.

My fault, 100%.  No question about it.

We were like lambs to the slaughter; walking inside and sitting down without inquiring about the price.  I probably wouldn’t have left, had I known this was an “all-you-can-eat” buffet at $72 USD per person, since I was so tired I’d have likely just said, “Screw it, let’s do it.”  But I sure wouldn’t have been caught off-guard!

I signed for a $15 tip, which I actually felt bad for, because it’s so cheap!  Barely over 10%, I thought.  But having been there for 20 minutes, and since the waitress only sat us down and gave us glasses of water, I tried to justify it in my mind.

I would soon learn what you guys already know: that there’s an automatic 15% gratuity on EVERYTHING on the resort.  Not to mention the 7.5% vacation tax.

22.5% added to every bill.  Even something as “cheap” as a $5 bottle of water comes with the 22.5% addition.

We left Mosaic feeling stupid.  Almost $200 Canadian for a twenty-minute meal.

My mother and I have this saying about vacations, and it goes like this, “Start spending.”

On vacation?  Start spending.

If you’re going to do it, do it right.  You’re away from home, you’ve earned this, you saved for this – so enjoy it.  Just start spending!

And after shelling out $200 for one plate of food on the first night, I figured, “What the hell, it is what it is.”

The next morning, however, I made another discovery regarding price, and this one didn’t sit quite as well with me.

It seems that all the “cheaper” restaurants on the island are of the all-you-can-eat variety.

Meaning that if you want breakfast at Mosaic or Poseidon’s Table, you’re paying $41 USD per person.

Sorry guys, I can’t do it.

I’m not cheap, and I’m not poor.  But I can’t do it.  I can’t pay $106 every morning for breakfast for my wife and myself.  I simply refuse.

The problem was, they didn’t have anywhere you could avoid the all-you-can-eat money-grab.

I’d have gladly paid $20 for two eggs on a piece of toast, but that option was nowhere to be found.

We ended up getting bagels and/or Starbucks-style cheese-croissant-bacon-thingees from the coffee shop, which along with a coffee, ran our total to about $30 per morning.

Thankfully, all the food we had bought at the grocery store for our daughter – fresh fruits and veggies, Cheerios, et al, was able to help one of us avoid gaining 6% in total body mass over the course of the trip.

I don’t know if Atlantis styles their all-you-can-eat restaurants around the American obsession with being fat, or the best way to overcharge people, but either way, the results were felt.

On the first night when we went to fill the bath for Maya, we discovered that the faucet didn’t work.  It let out a trickle of water that I calculated would have taken 8 hours to fill the tub.  So I took out the ice bucket, filled it with lukewarm water, and dumped it into the tub.

I repeated this act twenty-six additional times.

And then did so for the entire trip.  Twenty-seven buckets per night, for seven nights.  I filled the ice bucket 189 times in total.

We rented a “suite” at Atlantis, that’s essentially a 1-bedroom with a living room, so that we could have Maya sleep in a crib in the living room while we slept in the bedroom.  The pocket sliding-doors that separated the living room from the bedroom, however, did not close.

So every night when we went to bed there was a 24-inch gap that allowed noise to transfer, and thus if we wanted to be inside, we had to remain silent to avoid waking the little bug up.  We ended up drinking on our terrace every night, watching the people below – without kids, party the way we used to.  Oh, we made that observation more than a few times!  It’s just not the same with kids, is it?

The next day we decided to check out “Dolphin Cay,” which is pretty much as it sounds; a large man-made lagoon with a pack of cute-as-can-be dolphins, that kids of all ages would love.  It’s $400 USD per person to swim with the dolphins, but we were told by many on the island that you can go and watch for free.

Free?  Is anything free at Atlantis?

Imagine my surprise when we walked up to Dolphin Cay and found a swarm of people standing behind a fence that was 700 feet from any dolphin, and yet some people were on the sand, on the other side of the fence, a little closer.

Want to walk out onto the sand for a better look?

That’s $17 USD per person.

I couldn’t stomach it.

$51 for the three of us is nothing, and I’d gladly pay it to see one smile on my daughter’s face.  But I was just so unprepared for how this entire resort is built around picking people up, turning them upside down, and shaking them until every last penny falls out.

The goddam umbreallas on the beach, necessary to keep my kid from baking in the sun, were $20 to rent.

And while I don’t want to complain about the $295 USD per round of golf at Ocean Club, since that’s a personal choice I made, it bears mentioning.

So what else can I complain about?

Not once during the trip did the cleaning staff replace our shampoo and soap, so I basically grew dreadlocks.  Thank god for the bar of Dove I brought from Toronto.  I’ve never liked hotel soap.

The cleaning staff also didn’t empty our garbage, so each morning we’d take that down with us and throw it out ourselves.

We checked out the Atlantis “Kid’s Club” one afternoon, only to find it wasn’t a place where our kid could play, but rather a drop-off centre.  I mentioned in my post from two weeks ago how our daughter wouldn’t be allowed to play, given she was under 3-years-old, but I didn’t realize this was for kids only.

We asked if we could take a look anyways, and the guy at the desk said, “Adults aren’t allowed back there.”  I smiled, and said, “I’m not looking to build a Lego castle, I just wanted to see what’s behind the curtain.”  He replied, “It’s not possible, sir.”

I pictured a dozen kids behind that curtain, all sitting in front of cute little sewing machines, making textiles to be shipped out from the nearest port…

Call me crazy, but the idea of dropping my child off at this fine establishment for an extended period of time didn’t sit well with me.  Maybe, as a huge Liam Neeson fan, I’ve seen Taken a few too many times.  Tell me if I need to cut the cord here.

In the end, we made our own good time, as one has to do.

I realize just how much this reeks of “first world problem’s,” but, well, we live in the first world.  So this is my review.

The irony is, I had an amazing time.  So did my wife.  And our daughter?  I’ve never seen her so happy.

As I said at the onset, most reviews are negative.  People are far more likely to put the effort into a complaint than they are to put the effort into a “job well done.”

I’ve been to two Sandals resorts, and those trips were flawless.  So I’m not letting Atlantis completely off the hook, but I will admit that many of the negatives we experienced at Atlantis are things we would filter out next time.

Atlantis comes with a massive learning curve, and many of you wrote comments on my blog two weeks ago to that effect.  In fact, some of your comments helped us to learn what’s what!

This trip with our daughter was a huge “success.”

Last summer, we went to the same cottage that we’d been to four times previously over Canada Day long weekend, and it just didn’t work with Maya, who was then 7-months-old.  One month later, we went to Idaho, and soon learned that it wasn’t the right vacation for an 8-month-old child.

But Atlantis was perfect for her.  She played in the kiddie pool for hours every day, and in the sand on the beach.

She loved to explore the grounds no matter where we went.

And she spent hours watching the fish, sharks, and turtles from the various aquariums and outdoor ponds.

Seven days, and she never fussed.  She didn’t cry on either plane ride, she went right to sleep every night at 7pm, and slept for 12 hours.  She never stopped smiling the entire trip, and every day was a new experience for her.

Yes, Atlantis is expensive.

Yes, Atlantis is large, awkward, and has no accessiblity for strollers.

Yes, the room and the service disappionted us.

But as I have come to learn in the past year, the needs and well-being of my child now come far before my own.  This wasn’t a vacation for David and Jenna; it was an experience for Maya, and for the Fleming family as a unit.

I’m sure there are other, better, cheaper, closer, quieter, cleaner, sexier resorts out there, but looking at the photos and the smile on my daughter’s face in each of them, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Because we are already in so much debt, we may too shoot for the moon, right?

At the moment, the U.S. national debt is stuck at $19,846,087,305,498.20 since the debt ceiling has not yet been raised. The government is using accounting tricks to maintain that amount but the second the debt ceiling has been increased by Congress that amount will leap up by countless billions of bucks.

From the time financial 2017 is over, we will almost certainly have added at least another trillion dollars to the debt, and the Congressional Budget Office is projecting that an extra $10 trillion is going to soon be added to the debt during the next ten years.

These times we toss around the term “a trillion bucks” like it isn’t a major thing.

Let me share a tiny case with you to offer you an idea. In case you started spending a thousand bucks each and every day around the day that Jesus Christ was created and you kept on spending a thousand bucks every day as then, you still wouldn’t have spent a trillion bucks by now.

The borrower is the servant of the lender, and I would say that we are currently enslaving ourselves, but that is not exactly accurate because we do not really have any intention of ever paying some of the debt back. We aim to just keep moving to more debt for a long time to come.

Regrettably, it’ll be our children and our grandchildren which might need to deal with all of this debt when our nation stays that long. Thomas Jefferson was completely accurate when he described government debt for a means for a single generation to steal money from the other, and because the afternoon that Barack Obama initially entered the White House, the federal government was stealing more than 100 million bucks an hour out of our children and our grandchildren each and every hour of each and every moment.

Just think about that for a moment.

That would make headlines all over the planet, if some thieves may eliminate stealing 100 million bucks from somebody.

However, that is what we are doing to future generations of Americans each and every hour of daily.

I have said it earlier, and I will say it again. What we are doing to our children and our grandchildren is outside criminal, and in a just society those that are accountable for getting us into so much debt will be likely to jail.

Whenever you are in the midst of a debt binge, it can look like there will be no consequences, but the truth is that a day of reckoning arrives eventually.

Among the reasons why I get so fired up about the national debt is since it could literally ruin the bright future that our descendants were assumed to have.

When you look back over the long term, the ordinary interest rate on U.S. government debt has been somewhere about 6 per cent.

It’s inevitable that interest rates will soon go back toward the average eventually, although of course at the moment we are nowhere near that amount.

Let’s imagine that the rate of interest gained back to only 5 per cent. We’d be paying about a trillion dollars per year just in interest on the debt if that happened and we would be confronting national bankruptcy.

At there the Federal Reserve would likely begin printing money of course, and we would turn into Zimbabwe or even another Venezuela.

However, if it’s so dangerous for governments to enter so much debt, just why would they do it?

Well, for something most politicians do not really care about long-term considerations. Instead, they really need the government to invest a great deal of money from the short term, since government spending consistently gives a boost to short-term financial activity.

And if the economy is “doing well” in the short term, it’s more likely that the voters will be in a fantastic mood when voting time arrives.

That is something which Barack Obama understood. He inherited a economic wreck, and so he went to the government debt binge in history. As I explained in a previous article, when we had not spent and borrowed 9.3 trillion dollars at that time that Obama had been in the White House, then we would be in the worst economic depression in our history right at this moment.

By going into debt, of course, our long-term issues have been magnified.

It had been estimated that with the Republicans in charge of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives that a feeling of financial responsibility would return to Washington, but that clearly has not happened. So now the stage is set to the sort of financial meltdown that I have been warning about for a lengthy time.

At the same time the Republicans would at least give lip service to trying to restrain the debt, but now they also seem to have become sure that our exploding national debt doesn’t really matter.

They are vastly outnumbered, although there are a small number of Senators which are still maintaining the struggle and a few dozen members of the home.

Although we were the most wealthy and most prosperous country on the entire planet, that was not enough for us.

We always had to have more, and so we have gathered the greatest mountain of debt from the history of the world.

There will be serious consequences for what we have performed, however, the warnings have been ignored, and so now all that’s left is to allow us to reap what we have sown.

What else would be expected from the most warlike Empire in history? Welcome to The United States of America. We’ve been perfecting war for profit for more than 241 years now. Rough figures I’ve compiled indicate that the U.S. Military has been busy on battlefields for a total of over 460 years, fighting somewhere in the neighborhood of 106 separate wars. Obviously there’s been considerable overlap, lots of simultaneous fighting, and very little down time. Through the end of the nineteenth century, the U.S.A. busied itself with nation-building. There were millions of inconvenient Indigenous impediments to eliminate, and covetous European countries to conquer. Manifest Destiny required rivers of blood. From 1900 until present day, with most borders firmly established, the U.S. Military has busied itself with the tremendous task of controlling world resources, managing trade, and taming rogue nations who sought to play outside the established rules of what would become the world’s most powerful and feared superpower by mid-twentieth century. For Empire’s citizens, war is, and has always been the norm. Just business as usual. We are assured that our bravest and best in the world military fights our battles so we can enjoy our freedom. Little children learn to stand in reverence, pledge allegiance to the Stars and Stripes, and aspire to wear the uniform of the beloved fighting man. Their fondest dreams include firing the next generation of assault rifle at some, yet to be determined, enemy. Toy manufacturers have long made those dreams come true with authentic plastic replicas, complete with everything but real bullets, blood, and guts. If “Happiness is a warm gun.” as the Beatles told us, tongues in cheeks, U.S. citizens must have about the happiest trigger-fingers on earth. With the N.R.A. owning the souls and reelection hopes of nearly every U.S. Senator and Congressman, talk of gun control never takes a serious turn. The most we can expect from our lawmakers is a basket load of bogus prayers and crocodile tears. Every time another aspiring mass-murderer takes to the streets, self-proclaimed Liberal voices meekly propose Band-Aid fixes. Mandatory gun registration, assault weapon bans, closing the gun show loophole, no open carry, background checks, and on, and on, and all I’m hearing is blah-fucking-blah. And why? Because every human being on earth is capable of murder, and guns are the easiest, most efficient means to kill. Each one of us teeters on the breaking point. Some much closer than others. I decided at a very young age, never to allow guns in my house, because if I had access to them, I’d surely be wasting away in prison by now. Case in point: I can think of nearly 600 people in Washington, D.C. alone, without whom this country and the planet would be better off. Too bad Paddock wasn’t about 2400 miles east of Vegas when he snapped, went off his rocker, and rat-a-tat-tatted his way into history. The Las Vegas Massacre was nothing special. In Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, similar violence against a civilian population would barely make the news. Ours is a violent society. We think nothing of bombing foreign humans into oblivion. Unquestioningly we watch as our leaders send the U.S. Military into combat zones across the earth, creating chaos wherever it goes. We thank those who wear the uniform of death for their service. We love having the baddest, meanest armed force in history, and our violent mindset spills easily and naturally into our everyday lives. Americans love their guns. They love the power, they embrace their collections of steel phalli, and if you even suggest disarmament, they’ll blow your sorry ass into next week. U.S. citizens won’t voluntarily buy into any form of gun control, for any reason, any time in the foreseeable future, no matter how many of their friends, neighbors, and relatives are slaughtered. Savagery is embedded in the National Genome. There will be no meaningful domestic gun control until the day we eliminate war as a means for settling disputes, gaining new national boundaries, and controlling foreign national resources. Which brings us to US. Senator William Edgar Borah. Idaho elected Borah to office in 1907, and kept him there until his death in 1940. The highest mountain in the state is named Mount Borah, and Senator Borah’s ideas may yet help mankind find a high point in history. In 1923, still haunted by the carnage of World War I, Senator Borah introduced a resolution in the Senate, which announced and defined the desire of The United States to abandon the war system in favor of strict adherence to world law. The following is an excerpt from The Borah Resolution: …be it resolved, that it is the view of the Senate of The United States that war between nations should be outlawed as an institution or means for the settlement of international controversies by making it a public crime under the law of nations and that every nation should be encouraged by solemn agreement or treaty to bind itself to indict and punish its own international war breeders or instigators and war profiteers under powers similar to those conferred upon our Congress with the power to define and punish offenses against the law of nations; And be it resolved further that a code of international law of peace based upon the outlawing of war and on the principle of equality and justice between all nations, amplified and expanded and adapted and brought down to date should be created and adopted. Stephen Paddock was just a guy. Like your neighbor, your friend, your brother. We won’t stop the next escapade by requiring registration, background checks, or limiting the size of the tools of the trade. The terror of mass murder is the direct result of the acceptance of war. The United States of America is a runaway train, loaded to overflowing with atomic bombs, bunker-busters, cluster bombs, landmines, tanks, fighter jets, missiles, rockets, and munitions of every caliber, shape, and size. It is on a collision course with all the hopes and dreams of our children, and has trashed any semblance of freedom, safety, or happiness anywhere on earth with the endless specter of war. I’ve climbed countless mountains in my lifetime, but Mount Borah presents by far the greatest challenge. The actual mountain has a direct and easy route to the summit, but Senator Borah’s resolution never got off the ground. Too many profiteers had made their fortunes through the bloodshed of World War I. If he were alive and pushing his resolution today, Borah would likely be laughed right off the Senate floor. Ending the cycle of violence appears to be an impossible chore. My friend John Rachel has a plan, and what I believe to be a viable one. It offers substantial monetary rewards for those who sing the song of peace on earth. If it caught fire, The Peace Dividend would insure the ouster of N.R.A. whores in Congress, replace them with peace candidates, and put an end to war. This would signal a final and welcome end to the Dark Ages, and pave the road to total disarmament, both militarily and publicly. And if I hear even one of you Second Amendment jackals out there whining about your God-given/Constitutional right to own guns, I’m going to buy myself a Glock, shove it in your mouth, and blow your pea brains into the next county. “Look Ma, No Hands!”

The Deep State is escalating its war on President Trump but the Wall Street partiers apparently couldn’t care less. When the machines tagged 2402 on the S&P 500 yesterday, it was surely a historic case of “look ma, no hands!”

It’s hard to imagine what more will be needed to ignite an eruption of fear and panic in the casino amidst Wall Street’s record and wholly irrational state of somnolence.

After all, the Fed is sidelined and out of dry powder. The Red Ponzi is tottering. The U.S. retail sector is descending into an apocalypse. The giant auto bubble is fracturing. The Trump Stimulus is dead in the water, and Washington is heading for an extended stretch of complete dysfunction and acrimonious combat.

And if that isn’t that enough to upset the applecart — there are a lot more headwinds coming down the pike.

But the point is the insane governance process in Washington, which is completely unhinged, is combined with a level of insane complacency on Wall Street. Which is literally off the charts.

It would be one thing if our current fantastically inflated financial markets were reflective of a gusher of private sector growth, investment and productivity. That is, something like a new gilded age of invention and raw capitalist energy like occurred in the 1880s or 1920s.

The opposite is more likely the case, however. We have a mutant outbreak of financialization, debt, falsified financial prices and biblical levels of speculation and money shuffling — artificial economic conditions which are absolutely dependent upon agencies of the state.

Without treasury bailouts and endless central bank credit infusions, today’s massive financial bubbles would have splattered long ago.

Stated differently, with Washington heading into terminal breakdown, the boys and girls and robo-machines on Wall Street are now home alone. When they discover that there are no more bailouts and stimulus injections coming down the pike, they will panic like it’s October 1987 and then some.

The Fed’s persistent and drastic falsification of interest rates and all other financial asset prices has caused a monumental mis-allocation of capital and other economic resources into unproductive speculation and money shuffling.

That’s the long-run consequence of “pump-priming” with permanent deficit-financed tax cuts under both GOP and Democrat administrations since the 1980s.

Unfortunately, The Donald seems to be falling for the same Keynesian sludge “pump-priming” with deficits.

While cutting taxes is always a good idea in theory — that’s only true in practice if you pay for it (and “earn” it politically) with off-setting spending cuts or a more benign form of taxation. And tax cutting is also likely to be more timely and potent if the tax burden has been steadily creeping higher.

The Federal tax burden today is no higher than it was in 1977 under Jimmy Carter.  The Federal tax extraction was 17.5% of GDP in 2016 — the same level as in 1979.

As it happened, real GDP grew by only 1.8% last year compared to 6.0% in 1979. So it just might be the case that too high taxes are not the main roadblock holding back the economy in 2017.

In fact, I think deficit-financed tax cuts are being peddled by the Donald not based on any rational analysis at all. But mainly because Wall Street is very desperate for a new Stimulus fix to supplant the Fed’s sidelined printing presses.

There can be little doubt that the Donald’s advocacy of this old Keynesian snake oil has been foisted upon him by Gary Cohn, the Goldman Sachs heavy assigned to this particular White House.

Needless to say, Goldman has long been a source of powerful agents for the Keynesian Stimulus panacea — from Bob Rubin through Hank Paulson and William Dudley at the New York Fed.

But it also goes without saying that Goldman’s perma-stimulus advocacy has nothing at all to do with economic logic or historical evidence. It’s just the carrot they hang in front of the mule to keep it buying Goldman’s (marked-up) inventories of “risk assets.”

What is wildly different today than in 1977, however, is that the headroom for Wall Street-pleasuring Stimulus has been all used up on both the fiscal and monetary fronts.

The Goldman folks just haven’t bothered to inform the Donald. Perhaps that’s because their marching orders are to keep it a secret as long as possible — the better to call the retail sheep to the final slaughter.

In any event, the fiscal equation went to hell in a hand basket when the old time GOP lost its religion of fiscal rectitude.

Accordingly, the GOP’s most potent political weapon — mobilizing the middle class against Washington spend, tax and borrow policies — was unilaterally surrendered to the permanent beltway establishment.

In fact, during the past 40 years, the public debt soared by 29X (from $675 billion to $19.8 trillion), and from 32% of GDP to 106%. And based on built-in tax and spending policies it is destined to reach $35 trillion and 145% of GDP over the next decade — before taking into account a single dollar of the Donald’s planned additional spending.

The day of reckoning has been forestalled by massive monetization of the Federal debt during the interim. Some 40 years ago, the Fed’s balance sheet was just $100 billion. And it had taken its first six decades of existence to get there.

At $4.5 trillion today, the Fed’s balance sheet has grown 45X during the last four decades or by about 10% per year. The truth is, you cannot pump money that long at that rate with impunity.

So the Donald is now confronted by the worst of all possible worlds. That is, an economy that has been ruined by debt and massive financial inflation, but one that would actually be made worse by attempting to spend even more.

That’s because the U.S. economy has become saturated by debt in every sector.

Compared to roughly 150% of GDP and $2.5 trillion back in 1977, total credit market debt — business, household, government and financial — is now $64 trillion and 350% of GDP.

Accordingly, even small increases in interest rates would cause huge dislocations throughout the economy.

The skunk in the woodpile, of course, is that the worlds’ the central banks are finally out of dry powder. The monumental fraud of government debt and securities monetization that has been conducted during the last several decades for all practical purposes is finally over and done.

Therefore, attempting to add more debt under present conditions will actually blow the casino sky high. Even the Donald’s Goldman handlers don’t really understand that — but the Great Disrupter is surely fixing to prove the case in spades.

I’d tell you to get out of the casino immediately. But if you haven’t so far, I doubt I can convince you today.
