Hebe pimeleoides just coming into flower is today’s Father’s Day #oneadayplant. . The form ‘Quicksilver’ is quite often seen and a good cultivar. It has much smaller leaves and radiating habit. The species is fairly variable, but the selection I grow is a fairly loose growing shrub to 75cm (2.5’) tall. It associates really well with copper-coloured grasses, which can help to compensate for the looseness of form. . Lovely grey, evergreen foliage (should be ‘evergrey foliage’) set against black stems and a cute pale lilac-mauve flower in June-July. . There are around 100 different species of Hebe and many are quite different. We know a lot of them well in the UK, though only a handful are planted regularly and generally monotonously regularly to make them appear dull. There are also a couple of thousand named cultivars in a wide range leaf and flower colours and sizes. Well worth growing and ideally suited to the UK, especially coastal UK, Hebe are New Zealand’s largest Genus of plants. . Brachyglottis (Dunedin Group) ‘Sunshine’ (Syn. Senecio) #oneadayplant . I am not a massive fan of the flowers on this plant, but I love the fresh foliage when grown well like this young plant. Really better if given a prune to freshen up the growth. Otherwise, it can dull to an unfortunately bland olive-grey-green. . At its best, when the foliage and young stems are covered in the downy fluff that makes them reflectively Silver in appearance. . You could cut if the yellow flowers if you dislike them. I could too, but I can’t be bothered. So don’t. I just look at them and think, ‘wouldn’t you be more lovely if you were pink or white, or pretty much any other colour!’ . Anyway, enough rambling. Fuchsia procumbens (Trailing Fuchsia or Totara) #oneadayplant . New Zealand has a handful of native Fuchsia species, with almost all other native to South America. Among the NZ species are the world’s tallest species F. excorticata, which grows to become a tree in time and the world’s shortest species F. procumbens. . Also of note in this species, which has long been a favourite of mine is that it is the only species in the world to produce upright facing flowers. Don’t let the pic fool you. They are tiny! Only 1cm or so long. Beautiful though with green, maroon-purple, yellow red and perhaps most impressively the iridescent blue pollen. . While it will climb, it really sprawls better than anything else, rooting into the ground as it grows. . Not amazingly hardy, it will survive year on year in sheltered spots. Seems to do better in dry shade for me, though the dry bit is only really important in the winter. I’ve grown it underneath work benches in greenhouses, which it loves. Very easy to grow and can be propagated from cuttings, layering or seed from the amazing red seed pods it produces that remind me of Strawberry Grapes that the Italians call Uva Fragola. . I can’t tell you how much I love this plant. If you know how much I love NZ plants in general then you will have some appreciation of my love for it. Possibly my favourite bit of exotic groundcover. By which I mean, not fully or reliably UK hardy groundcover . I will post more pics of the seed pods at a later date. For now, enjoy this gorgeous, tiny flower. Besides Hobbiton, I also got to visit @waitomoglowwormcaves on the same day as part of my @aucklandandbeyond tour package. My pictures don't do these incredible caverns any justice. Unfortunately, I can only offer a picture of the enterance to the cavern and from after I reached the outside. The reason behind this is no one is allowed to take pictures because it would slowdown the tour and flash photography would disturb the residents of the caverns: New Zealand glowworms or titiwai (Arachnocampa luminosa). For anyone not familiar with A. luminosa, they are a species of the fungus gnat most recognizable by the glowing strands of silk produced by the larva used to attract prey, or to attract a male in the case of imago females. Waitomo Caves is special in that it contains a major glowworm colony. They make it look like a subterranean galaxy. The surroundings are also amazing to look at, which is why I took some pictures.
