Death Avenue, corner of West 26th St, 1910. Eleventh Avenue was named Death Avenue due to the grade level New York Central freight line, which killed many pedestrians trying to cross between trains. In 1929 the last train traveled up the Ave with the closing of 105 street level crossings, signaling the construction of the elevated track that is today's High Line. #thehighline #chelseanyc #meatpackingdistrict #newyorkcentralrr #newyorkcentral #highlinenyc #highline #nychistory #deathavenue #deathave (at The High Line)

Grand Central Terminal before its opening in 1913. Notice any differences? The west staircase in the foreground is there, but the east end has no staircase. That is because in 1994 Grand Central was completely renovated, one of the many parts of the renovation being an addition of an east staircase that balanced the west one across the main concourse. Restoration of the ceiling, which had turned black with tobacco and nicotine smoke over the years was also part of the $102 million dollar plan. For those who don't already know, one ceiling tile was left black, to show today's visitors what the terminal looked like before the renovation. #grandcentral #secretsofgrandcentral #grandcentralterminal #newyorkcentral #newyorkcentralRR #secretsofnewyorkcity #midtown #42ndstreet (at Grand Central Terminal)
