Asking for an EDS friend: She's having to wear wrist braces almost all day long and no matter what she tries she can't get rid of the smell. She can't freeze them overnight since she needs them to sleep. They're also plastic and can't be microwaved. I'm certain she's also tried powders and oils. Anyone have tips?

I used to use the spray they use to prevent odors in shoes. I also used deodorant. And I know not everyone can afford it, but I got two pairs. So you can freeze them with baking soda or something. After a little while, I’ve found that the smell tends to settle in unless you can run them through a washing machine or soak them and wash them or something. Anybody have something better?

I think the reason you get confused about posts where we talk about experiences with aggressive men is probably just location. I resonate with those posts because that's unfortunately how a lot of interactions with men are out here. A lot of the time at work I can't even ask a guy a simple thing like "please scoot your chair in so I can fit in my chair too" without shit starting. I have to think, do I want to sit down today, or do I want this guy causing problems/stalking me to my car?

Yikes. Yeah, depending on what “shit starting” means exactly, that’s not a common experience for me at all. That’s the kind of thing where I’m pretty sure the disruptive person would be told in no uncertain terms to leave.

Re: mental illness and violence. When my mother's illness got out of control, she stabbed my dad with a high heel, slammed a window on his hand (required stitches), smashed plates, self-harmed and blamed it on my dad to get him arrested. Verbal violence towards me as a child, held me down and beat me in the face with a phone, then kicked me out onto the street w/o pants or shoes. There are things my dad still won't tell me about because he thinks if I knew I wouldn't talk to her ever again.

[2] The point is, no, not all mentally ill people are violent. But, left untreated/poorly treated, it can manifest these behaviors. It pains me to admit that even I have experienced this with myself. I never beat anyone, but there were ways that I acted that were totally not the way a mentally healthy person acts. It was because I had lost my grip on reality. I can only imagine what kind of state someone has to be in to believe that harming others is a solution to their pain.

1: What did you do in 2016 that you’d never done before?

Live alone. Play a MOBA against real people. Hold down a regular job. Have a pet. Lots of other things I've peobably overlooked.

2: Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I don't really do new year's resolutions. I'll work on things I need to work on, but I don't necessarily know what those are going to be in January. Maybe in March I'll meet an annoying co-worker and need to be more chill, maybe I'll need to buckle down on a project, maybe I'll find an SO that I'll need to talk to more openly. Who knows? 

6: What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?

Patience! A job in my field! Motivation! The time and energy to write! So many things.

Of course, but even then, there is variation because humans are beautifully diverse. A lot of women in my family have very square jaws, not at all oval. And it’s not just with bone structure too, there are many other traits that can be unique to each person regardless of sex.
