Cos'è davvero l'uguaglianza? È come una chimera, un ideale che sfugge, un concetto che ognuno interpreta a modo suo. Da una parte, c'è chi grida al merito, alla gerarchia, a una sorta di legge della giungla dove vince il più forte. Ma il merito è davvero così oggettivo? Non è che spesso è il frutto di un gioco di carte truccato, dove alcuni nascono già con un asso nella manica? E poi, c'è chi, all'opposto, sostiene che siamo tutti uguali, punto e basta. Ma se siamo tutti uguali, che senso ha valorizzare le differenze? È come dire che un Picasso e un bambino di tre anni che scarabocchia un foglio sono sullo stesso piano.

Io credo che l'uguaglianza sia il fondamento di una società sana, ma non nell'accezione di un livellamento che annulla le individualità. È il diritto di ogni essere umano a partire da una linea di partenza equa, a poter sviluppare i propri talenti, a non essere giudicato per l'origine, il colore della pelle o le preferenze sessuali. Ma questo non significa che tutti debbano fare lo stesso lavoro o raggiungere gli stessi traguardi. Un medico e un poeta hanno ruoli diversi, ma entrambi sono essenziali per la nostra società.

Il problema nasce quando confondiamo l'uguaglianza con l'uniformità. È come se volessimo tutti indossare la stessa taglia di scarpe, senza renderci conto che ognuno ha un piede diverso. Certo, possiamo creare delle scarpe standard, ma poi ci saranno sempre quelli a cui stringono e quelli a cui sono larghe.

La meritocrazia, se intesa nel modo giusto, può essere un motore di crescita. Ma deve essere una meritocrazia inclusiva, che non lasci indietro nessuno. È illogico pensare che un bambino cresciuto in un ambiente privo delle risorse fondamentali possa, senza alcun supporto, raggiungere gli stessi risultati di un suo coetaneo cresciuto in un contesto privilegiato. Dobbiamo creare delle reti di sostegno, delle rampe di lancio per chi parte svantaggiato.

E poi c'è la questione della libertà di espressione. Certo, ognuno ha diritto a dire la sua, ma non tutte le opinioni hanno lo stesso valore. Un'idea ben argomentata, frutto di una profonda riflessione, è diversa da un'opinione buttata lì tanto per dire. E non dimentichiamo che la libertà di espressione ha dei limiti. Non possiamo gridare al fuoco in un cinema, né diffondere notizie false che possano danneggiare gli altri.

Per costruire una società più giusta ed equa, dobbiamo prima di tutto affrontare le contraddizioni e le sfide che ci troviamo ad affrontare. Come possiamo conciliare il principio di uguaglianza con quello di meritocrazia? Viviamo in un'epoca contraddittoria, dove si invocano i valori di pace e fratellanza, ma si perpetuano le disuguaglianze. Più parliamo di uguaglianza, più il divario tra ricchi e poveri sembra allargarsi.

Ci chiediamo allora: vogliamo davvero una società più equa? E se sì, perché le nostre azioni non corrispondono a questo desiderio? Siamo disposti a mettere in discussione i nostri privilegi per costruire un futuro più giusto? Le risposte a queste domande sono fondamentali per definire le azioni concrete che dobbiamo intraprendere.

Insomma, la strada verso l'uguaglianza è lunga e tortuosa. È un percorso che richiede impegno, dialogo e soprattutto onestà intellettuale. Dobbiamo essere disposti a mettere in discussione le nostre convinzioni, a uscire dalla nostra comfort zone e ad ascoltare le ragioni degli altri. Solo così potremo costruire una società più giusta e più equa, dove ognuno possa realizzarsi e trovare il proprio posto.
