so birb people. a friend of mine gave me her goffin’s cockatoo. she’s nine, she really needed a new home, and i really needed a longer living pet to love and spoil. I’ve only had one bird that i loved before, and that was when i worked at a pet store. he wasn’t even mine.  She is so stressed that I am leaving her when she can’t see me that she just keeps screaming. and her screams are stressing me out (ptsd). i know its only been one night, but i have things i need to do tomorrow too and im so scared that when i leave she’s guna just start screaming till my complex complains.
I’ve shown her around my apartment, i talk whenever i walk away so so she can hear me. The only thing that’s gotten her to calm down is by being firm and telling her no, I also gave her a bunch new chews and toys and treats.
but she’s freak’n my rats out too.
I need advice, she’s already stressed from her previous home so she plucked her neck feather’s out, and the people who gave her to me are thoroughly entrusting me (they have like five other birds too and i kept asking them if they were super sure they thought i could do this and they totes think so) but i need help in understanding her so i can help her.
I know she’s a smart bird, like 2-3 year old toddler smart, is simple discipline like “no” a thing? What’s the best way to get her to understand that i really would never abandon her, or is that just something that will happen over time?
