Recently published news reports and legal studies have revealed that the US government has been violating basic democratic rights by using facial recognition to monitor and track the public. These reports have also shown that facial recognition is used widely as a preferred form of police biometrics, i.e., the science of identification and tracking through facial signatures and other kinds of unique individual measurements such as finger, palm and voice prints and dental and DNA profiles.
Every level of law enforcement—from city and state police departments to federal border patrol and military-intelligence—has been participating in the mass collection and analysis of facial images. This includes photos taken for government-issued ID cards and driver’s licenses and others captured from hidden surveillance cameras in public places such as border crossings, highways, parks, sporting events, sidewalks and airports as well as those scraped from social media accounts.
Georgetown Law published a study on May 19 called “America Under Watch” which documented the widespread use of facial recognition by the city governments and police departments of Detroit and Chicago. As part of its conclusion, the Georgetown report said, “real-time video surveillance threatens to create a world where, once you set foot outside, the government can track your every move. For the 3.3 million Americans residing in Detroit and Chicago, this may already be a reality.”
However, just as public outrage over these revelations had begun to emerge and several cities have been forced to ban the use of facial recognition—including San Francisco and Oakland, California as well as Somerville, Massachusetts—it became clear that the latest media exposures have a twofold political purpose.
On the one hand, the most conscious sections of the ruling establishment are concerned about the explosive reaction of millions of people to unfettered 24/7 state monitoring of their activities and whereabouts. Therefore, significant political pressure is being applied to force Congress to adopt as soon as possible a federal regulatory framework for the expanding biometric surveillance apparatus.
On the other hand, Democratic Party representatives and their supporters are using identity politics to conceal the serious implications of secret facial profiling and the trend toward a police state that it represents. By focusing exclusively on studies indicating race and gender bias in facial recognition tools, the Democrats are seeking to divert public anger away from a mass struggle by the working class in defense of democratic rights and into support for laws that will legalize the surveillance.
Among the most often referenced of the race and gender bias studies has been the MIT Media Lab Gender Shades project by Joy Buolamwini—a self-proclaimed “poet of code” and campaigner against “algorithmic bias”—who published her first results in 2017. The initial Gender Shades analysis of facial analysis technology from IBM, Microsoft and Face++ showed that “male subjects were more accurately classified than female subjects,” “lighter subjects were more accurately classified than darker individuals” and “all classifiers performed worst on darker female subjects.”
A follow-up study in 2018 by Buolamwini also showed that facial recognition tools from Amazon and Kairos exhibited the same trends performing “better on male faces than female faces” and “better on lighter faces than darker faces” and “have the current worst performance for the darker female sub-group.”
A similar—although far less scientific—test was performed by the ACLU on Amazon’s Rekognition facial analysis software in July 2018. A database of 25,000 mugshots was compared against public photos of every member of the US House and Senate. Amazon’s tool returned 28 false matches identifying them “as other people who have been arrested for a crime.”
The ACLU report then said, “The false matches were disproportionately of people of color … 40 percent of Rekognition’s false matches in our test were of people of color, even though they make up only 20 percent of Congress.” Since Amazon’s Rekognition is currently being used as the facial analysis tool of choice by city, county and state police departments across the country, false identification rates of minorities are of legitimate concern among workers and young people.
However, the political objective behind the Gender Shades and ACLU studies is not to prove that facial recognition should be stopped immediately, but to insist that the technology can be improved upon. The ACLU says that what is needed is “transparency and accountability in artificial intelligence” and a moratorium on law enforcement use of facial recognition until “all necessary steps are taken to prevent them from harming vulnerable communities.”
In other words, according to the ACLU, police surveillance with facial recognition of the working class is fine and can go forward with appropriate technical adjustments that reduce false identification of minorities and with the adoption of acceptable federal government guidelines for its use.
Essentially, the MIT and ACLU findings have been seized upon by the New York Times, the Democrats and organizations such as the Democratic Socialists of America as a means of burying fundamental democratic questions beneath race and gender politics. What they are advocating is, in essence, a racialist ideology and politics that serve to divide the working class and prevent a unified struggle against the growing threat of a police state in America.
For example, in entirely predictable fashion, the Times published a snide article on February 8, 2018 with the headline “Facial recognition is accurate, if you’re a white guy,” which featured Joy Buolamwini and her Algorithmic Justice League.
What becomes clear in the course of the Times interview with Buolamwini is that she is on a mission for “inclusion” of minorities and women into the corrupt corporate world of government-sponsored artificial intelligence surveillance technology. Through the efforts of the Gender Shades study and others, organizations like IBM and the Ford Foundation—who talk to the Times about how they are “deeply committed” to “unbiased” and “transparent” spying on the public—get to pose as “progressive” companies.
On July 10 of this year, the Times also published a comment by its graphics editor Sahil Chinoy headlined, “The Racist History Behind Facial Recognition,” that mechanically and ahistorically sought to draw a direct line of causality between the reactionary eugenics and racialist pseudoscience of the 19th and early 20th centuries—that claimed head shape and facial morphology characteristics were predictive of behavior and mental capacities—with modern biometrics.
The purpose of the Times reporting is to show that, through the anti-bias efforts of Buolamwini and others who call for “fairness and inclusion” in facial recognition, the corporate partners of the FBI and the surveillance state itself can be convinced of the value of “standards for accountability and transparency.”
However, as was clearly shown in the second Gender Shades study, the result of this campaign against race and gender bias has been the improvement of software algorithms by the developers. Although this aspect of Buolamwini’s study has been given little attention, the 2018 results showed, “Within 7 months, all targeted corporations were able to significantly reduce error gaps … revealing that if prioritized, the disparities in performance between intersectional subgroups can be addressed and minimized in a reasonable amount of time.”
This was also echoed in a statement sent to Buolamwini by IBM which, according to the Times, said that within a month of her second study results, the company “will roll out an improved service with a nearly 10-fold increase in accuracy on darker-skinned women.”
The race and gender bias campaign has also fueled efforts by Democratic Party politicians across the country to cover up their own role in the creation and maintenance of the surveillance state apparatus by posturing as opponents of the false identification flaws of the software.
The racialist character of identity politics was on full display during a hearing of the House Oversight and Reform Committee on May 22, for example, when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (Democrat of New York)—a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)—concluded her questioning of the panelists with a stage-managed exchange with Buolamwini who was a key witness. After being asked by Ocasio-Cortez what demographic facial recognition tools are “mostly effective on” and “who are the primary engineers and designers of these algorithms?” Buolamwini responded multiple times with “white men.”
Ultimately, the efforts of the Democrats, the DSA and identity politics advocates are aimed at diverting the anger of the working class against the mass surveillance into demands for congressional action that would make it legal to spy on the public with facial recognition tools as long as it is “fair and unbiased.”
The defense of democratic rights cannot be entrusted to these representatives of the affluent middle class who are employing methods of deception to conceal their own moneyed interests in getting on board with the private surveillance industry as well as the true meaning and historical implications of what is unfolding in society.
The growth of extreme economic inequality, the unending US wars in the Middle East and elsewhere and the evolution of the administration of President Donald Trump toward authoritarian rule—with the support of the Democratic Party—are all aspects of decaying democracy in advance of a massive confrontation between the working class and the ruling establishment in America and internationally.
It is in preparation for this conflict that the surveillance state is being erected and perfected. Workers, students and young people must unify across all national, racial, gender and language differences—independently of the government, the corporations and the middle-class pseudo-left—to make their own preparations for the major class battles now on the horizon.

Bloomberg scribes Kevin Cirilli, Sahil Kapur, Anna Edgerton, Erik Wasson, Ben Brody, Shannon Pettypiece, and Colleen Murphy: so not the sharpest knives in the drawer
Perhaps I shouldn’t be making this a case of collective responsibility, but all of these people have their names on an article over at Bloomberg, “Trump Rethinks State-Local Tax Issue Over Middle-Class Concerns”. Guys (and gals): you have to think something before you rethink it.
Okay, maybe they didn’t write that headline, but they did write the first paragraph, to wit: “Months after the White House proposed ending a tax break for people in high-tax states, President Donald Trump grew angry when he learned that the change would hurt some middle-income taxpayers, according to two people familiar with his thinking.”
Yeah, sure, Donnie was filled with righteous wrath when he learned about this. Can’t we end the pretense of taking anything Donald Trump says seriously? And can’t we especially not take seriously what people say who claim to be familiar with his “thinking”?
Afterwords Even though I was not “privy”, as we say in the biz, to any of Donald Trump’s “thinking” regarding tax reform, I can tell you what he “thought” of eliminating the deductibility of state and local taxes from federally taxable income: “Great! We’ll pay off the deficit and fuck the Democrats in the ass at the same time!” Because, of course, it’s high-income folks in Democratic states—New York and California in particular—who benefit most from the current law.
But, naturally, it’s impossible to write a law that only hurts Democrats. Some Republicans would get burned as well. Everybody knows this. It’s just that the Republicans pretended they didn’t know this, that they didn’t know that their new tax proposals would inevitably provoke a politically potent backlash, no matter what they were, because, unless you don’t care about the deficit at all—and even professional frauds like Paul Ryan weren’t willing to go that far—any tax cut has to be balanced with a tax increase, on someone, who will bitch, in a politically potent manner, regardless of any issue of “equity”, which is, in these cases, entirely in the eye of the beholder.
And so we see that Republican “plans” for tax reform are just as fraudulent as their “plans” for repealing and replacing ObamaCare. Any discussion of anything any Republican says about tax reform must be founded on the premise that nothing any Republican says about tax reform should be taken seriously. Especially if that Republican is named Donald Trump.
UPDATE Bloomberg has now changed its headline to say “Trump Is Angry About a Proposal in His Own Tax Plan, Sources Say,” possibly rethinking the whole thinking thing.

(Bloomberg) -- Eric Swalwell announced Monday that he’s exiting the presidential contest and will be seeking re-election to his House seat. The California congressman, who focused his campaign on toughening gun control, dropped out after just three months.“Today ends our presidential campaign,” he said in Dublin, California. He said his goal was to win and that his candidacy hadn’t been “a vanity project” or a means “to write a book.”Swalwell said that while he moved the needle among Democrats on gun control and buying back military-style assault weapons, he didn’t see a path to victory.“Being honest with ourselves, we had to look at how much money we were raising, where we were in the polls,” Swalwell said. “We have to be honest about our own candidacy’s viability.”He wouldn’t say whom he would endorse in the presidential race.“If Megan Rapinoe gets in the race I’m probably going to endorse her,” he said, referring to the captain of the U.S. women’s soccer team, which won the World Cup Sunday.Impeachment Advocate Steyer Weighs 2020 Bid (3:50 p.m.)Billionaire hedge fund manager and impeachment maven Tom Steyer may be thinking -- yet again -- about getting into the presidential race.If he does run, he could already have a leg up on Democrats in Iowa: He’s spent more on TV there than the rest of the field of more than 20 candidates combined. The Need to Impeach PAC -- which is almost entirely financed by Steyer -- has spent more than $445,000 in the Des Moines television market alone, according to a Bloomberg analysis of television station files. The group’s commercials often feature Steyer making the case for President Donald Trump to be removed from office. With seven months before the first caucuses, only two other Democratic candidates have paid for television time in Des Moines: former Representative John Delaney of Maryland ($188,000) and Representative Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii ($8,550).Several news outlets -- including The Atlantic and the Washington Post -- reported that Steyer told allies that he could announce a run as soon as Tuesday.A note of caution: Steyer hinted at a run a 2020 run early this year, but showed up in Des Moines only to announce he had decided against it.“I’m not going to run for president right now,” he told a Des Moines audience in January. “I am going to spend 100% of my time working to impeach and remove this president.”-- Gregory KortkeElizabeth Warren’s Fundraising Jumps to $19M (2 p.m.)Small donors vaulted Elizabeth Warren into third place in the Democratic presidential money race, giving further proof of her momentum as she rises in the polls.Warren’s campaign manager Roger Lau said Monday that the Massachusetts senator raised $19.1 million in the second quarter of 2019, trailing South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former Vice President Joe Biden, but ahead of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Warren was in fifth place in the first quarter. The second quarter funds came from 384,000 people, who made more than 683,000 donations, with the average contribution amount of $28, Lau said. More than 80% of the donors gave for the first time in the last three months, he added.“You’re making it possible to build a presidential campaign without catering to wealthy donors -- with no closed-door fundraisers, no super PACs, and no money from Washington lobbyists, corporate PACs, or, for that matter, PACs of any kind,” Lau said in an email to supporters.Warren topped the $18 million raised by Sanders, who’s also sworn off in-person events in favor of an online fundraising strategy. Both candidates are competing for support from the party’s progressive wing, with promises to make profound changes to the nation’s economic policies.Warren’s intake compared with Buttigieg’s surprise $24.8 million haul after beginning his campaign with little name recognition. Biden raised $21.5 million since entering the race in late April.Buttigieg and Biden have gotten support from Democratic bundlers, the well-connected individuals who can arrange closed-door events with large numbers of donors who write $2,800 checks, the maximum donation a campaign can accept. Both candidates also make appeals to online donors as well. The small-dollar fundraising numbers offer evidence of who is generating excitement among the party’s grassroots supporters. While Biden remains the front-runner in the race, his support has slipped in several surveys since the first debates at the end of June. Warren, meanwhile, has gained on both Biden and Sanders, No. 1 and 2 in the early polling, after a strong performance in the June 26 debate.California Senator Kamala Harris, who reported raising more than $11 million in the second quarter, has also seen her poll numbers rise after her performance on the debate stage.Warren’s fundraising surged from the $6 million she raised in the first quarter, when she spent $5.2 million, including the salaries of more than 170 staff members. Warren’s campaign said that she ended June with $19.7 million cash on hand, less than $100,000 of which is restricted for the general election.Candidates are due to report second-quarter totals to the Federal Election Commission officially on July 15. Some campaigns voluntarily announce the amount they raised ahead of the deadline as a demonstration of their support outside of polls. The Democratic National Committee has placed increased emphasis on collecting cash from a large number of donors from widespread parts of the country. One of the criteria for qualifying for the first two sets of debates was securing donations from 65,000 individuals, with at least 200 in 20 different states. That number increases to 130,000 for the debates to be held in September. As Democrats fight for dollars in a crowded primary field of more than 20 candidates, President Donald Trump is building a large financial advantage to prepare for the general election. His campaign manager said Tuesday that Trump’s re-election campaign and the Republican National Committee combined to raise $105 million during the second quarter and had $100 million in cash on hand. -- Bill Allison and Sahil KapurSwalwell Sets News Conference as Bid Falters (11:53 a.m.)Eric Swalwell’s struggling campaign has scheduled a news conference for 1 p.m. Pacific time at his northern California headquarters, feeding speculation about whether he will stay in the crowded Democratic presidential race. The California congressman has struggled to raise money or gain traction in the polls. He made the cut for the first debate in late June, but his prospects for qualifying for the second debate later this month in Detroit have been in doubt.Swalwell has focused on gun control in his campaign, going further than rivals by calling for the government to outlaw and “buy back” military-style assault weapons. A deputy of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, he’s been active in House investigations of President Donald Trump, and is a fixture on cable TV. -- Sahil KapurTrump Touts Green Leadership. Critics Cry Foul (9:55 a.m.)Donald Trump plans to tout U.S. environmental progress in a speech today as polls show many voters think climate change is a major issue in 2020.It’s familiar terrain for Trump, who frequently boasts that the U.S. has the “cleanest” air and water -- sometimes drawing comparisons to “dirty,” pollution-choked cities in China and South America. He can point to U.S. strides in cleaning up its air, with a key pollution measure dropping 73% from 1970 to 2017 -- even though the economy grew more than 260% in the same time. Yet environmental advocates say the gains were driven by decades-old federal clean air and water rules -- the very rules Trump is now working to undermine. One bit of bad news for Trump: carbon dioxide emissions that drive climate change are rising again, after generally falling since 2005. There was a 2.7% uptick in greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion in 2018, the second-largest annual increase since 2000, according to a report from the Rhodium Group LLC.Trump made cutting back environmental regulation a signature issue on the campaign trail in 2016 and moved aggressively once in the White House. He directed the Interior Department to resume selling coal on federal land and began easing limits on oil well releases of methane, a super-potent greenhouse gas. Trump also kept his promise to abandon the Paris climate accord -- a global pact to pare greenhouse gas emissions.“It’s absurd for President Trump to claim any environmental credentials when his administration continues to drive a destructive pro-polluter agenda at the expense of the American people,” said Jill Tauber, vice president of litigation, climate and energy at Earthjustice. At the White House event Monday, EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler is expected to highlight reductions in conventional air pollutants, rapid remediation of Superfund sites and the inclusion of environmental provisions in the renegotiated North American trade agreement.-- Jennifer A. DlouhyCNN to Pick July Democratic Debate Lineup Live (8:22 a.m.)Networks broadcast the NFL draft and the brackets for the NCAA’s March Madness, so why not debate lineups?CNN announced Monday morning that it will broadcast a live drawing to select the lineups for two nights of Democratic presidential primary debates on July 30 and July 31. The network will carry the second pair of debates from Detroit. As the first debates from Miami showed, the lineups matter: Kamala Harris was on stage with Joe Biden for her breakout moment challenging him on busing, a brief exchange that has reverberated for almost two weeks.Likewise, Elizabeth Warren was the only top-five candidate on stage the first night, allowing her to dominate the event. The drawing will be aired on CNN on July 18 in the 8 p.m. hour, the network said. The 20 candidates invited to participate in one of the July debates will be notified by the Democratic National Committee and CNN on the evening of July 17. -- Craig GordonBiden’s Apology Tour Draws Fire From Trump (6 a.m.)Joe Biden spent the weekend apologizing for his remarks about his civil relationships with segregationist senators in the hopes of putting the issue behind him. President Donald Trump wasn’t ready to let it go.“Sleepy Joe Biden just admitted he worked with segregationists,” tweeted Trump, who himself is often accused of using racially charged rhetoric and would love to make the issue a wash with independent voters in a face-off with Biden. One day earlier, Trump called Biden a “reclamation project” who “Won’t win!”Despite his missteps, Biden remains the party’s front-runner and is seen by many Democrats as the safest bet to defeat Trump. That perception was reinforced Sunday by a Washington Post-ABC News poll that found Biden is the only top-tier Democrat clearly leading Trump in hypothetical general-election match-ups. Biden led Trump by 10 points among registered voters, while Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg were all statistically tied with the president.Biden on Sunday rejected the idea that a debate confrontation with Harris, who excoriated his “hurtful” remarks, led voters to question his ability to take on Trump. “Not the polls I’ve seen today,” he said in Charleston, South Carolina.Biden said Saturday that he’s “sorry for any pain” his remarks may have caused, 18 days after he spoke wistfully at a fundraiser about working with senators like James O. Eastman in the 1970s, despite their disagreements. The day after his June 18 comments, he scoffed at the idea of apologizing and absorbed some blows in his quest to be the standard-bearer of a party that is mobilized around combating racism.Biden’s support slipped from 32.4% to 26% in the RealClearPolitics average of Democratic polls, though he’s still almost 11 points ahead of Harris in second place.Harris, Buttigieg and other Democrats said they appreciated Biden’s words, but not everyone was ready to move on. “This is an important statement but would have been better weeks ago — or maybe on the debate stage!” tweeted David Axelrod, a former strategist for President Barack Obama, whom Biden often name-checks on the stump. “It shouldn’t take weeks to land.” -- Sahil Kapur and Jennifer EpsteinComing Up This Week:Several Democratic presidential contenders plan to speak Thursday at the annual meeting of the League of United Latin American Citizens, a Hispanic civil rights group, in Milwaukee. They include Sanders, Warren, Julián Castro, Beto O’Rourke, John Delaney and Marianne Williamson. Jill Biden will also speak. All are eying the votes of the growing Hispanic constituency. One hot topic is immigration, which looms large over the 2020 primaries and general election, particularly after multiple reports about deaths of asylum-seeking migrants and poor conditions at detention centers. Here’s What Happened Sunday:Michigan Representative Justin Amash, who announced last week he’s leaving the Republican Party, said Sunday he “wouldn’t rule out” a run as a third-party presidential candidate. Before leaving the GOP, Amash became the only Republican member of Congress to call for Trump’s impeachment. He said on CNN Sunday that for now he plans to seek re-election to the House as an independent.Trump’s approval rating has risen to the highest point of his presidency in the Washington Post-ABC News, aided by the strong U.S. economy. Still, Americans have doubts about the president. His approval rating was at 44% in the poll, up from 39% in April, with 53% of U.S. adults saying they disapprove of him.State of the Race:Ten Democratic candidates laid out their plans for increasing funding for public schools as they made a pitch for support from the National Education Association, the nation’s biggest union. Amy Klobuchar, Julian Castro, Kamala Harris, Jay Inslee, Bernie Sanders, Beto O’Rourke, Bill de Blasio, Tim Ryan and Elizabeth Warren addressed the NEA’s conference in Houston. Teachers are a key constituency for Democrats in the primary and general elections.\--With assistance from Jennifer Epstein, Jennifer A. Shantanu & Nikhil, Ujjawal Dubey, Sahil Aneja, Dhruv Kapoor, and Raghavendra Rathore unveil their latest menswear collections on Day 1 of Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights 2017
GQ India, the ultimate authority on men’s fashion and lifestyle, and India’s leading lifestyle brand for professionals, Van Heusen, launched the 3rd edition of Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights on 11th November 2017 at Taj Land’s End, Mumbai. Day 1 of the glittering fashion soiree saw ace designers Shantanu & Nikhil, Dhruv Kapoor, Ujjawal Dubey, Sahil Aneja and Raghavendra Rathore showcase strong collections. While Radhika Apte was the showstopper for Shantanu & Nikhil, Ayushmann Khurana walked the ramp for new-wave designer Sahil Aneja. Anil Kapoor was at his suave best as he walked for Raghavendra Rathore and Dino Morea was the showstopper for Van Heusen.
The evening also witnessed Van Heusen showcase an exclusive premium line of luxury menswear. The Van Heusen SS 2018 Collection included Power Greens and featured the best of cottons, natural linens and fashion formals in fresh greens and cool mints for the confident man’s wardrobe.
Ever since its launch in 2008, GQ India has always been at the forefront of all things related to the modern Indian man. The last 9 years have seen GQ play an instrumental role in revolutionizing menswear in India, bringing about a tidal wave of change that has trickled down to the average man on the streets, further substantiated by Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights.
Known for their progressive take on fashion, brothers Shantanu & Nikhil opened Day 1 by unveiling their SS’18 collection Thar. Thar, as a collection, is an urban take on the timeless tribes of Rajasthan. The collections featured layered pleating, bold color blocking, long line cape structures, reinterpreted drapes, relaxed silhouettes and surface ornamentation with elements of tassels being interwoven to break away from any categorization of gender.
The ever-so talented actress – Radhika Apte walked the ramp with elegance and confidence. Styled by the expert designers and Shantanu & Nikhil. To say that Radhika looked jaw dropping dead gorgeous would be an understatement. She expresses, “The designers are committed to nurture the Rajasthani heritage of India. When this whole look came together -I felt that comfort, I felt like I owned it. It was skin to me. Comfort is something I always vouch for, and I could completely relate to the theme of Thar. It really was a pleasure to walk for them at the Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights 2017 and showcase the reviving heritage.”
The second show titled ‘The Future’ featured Dhruv Kapoor, Ujjawal Dubey, and Sahil Aneja. Dhruv Kapoor’s collection reflected multiple belief systems – new and old, historical figures or even a future world. The collection revolved around the concept of putting things together belonging to multiple genres – similar to creating a look from second hand shops, army and navy surplus finds or simply fabric knocked up on a sewing machine backed by individualistic
taste with a sense of detachment and decisiveness. Ujjawal Dubey’s ‘Men of Metal’ collection showcased how the sheen of metallic yarns complement textured surfaces with the shades of deep greys and blacks adding to the intensity. On the other hand, Sahil Aneja’s collection was an amalgamation of street style and tailoring. Self-made printed fabric and text played an important part in the collection with surface designing being noteworthy throughout.
Talking about being the show stopper of Sahil Aneja’s show, an exhilarated Ayushmann Khurrana shared, “It felt great to walk the ramp for the versatile Sahil Aneja today. Fashion is all about comfort for me, and it was a pleasure to be a part of one of the most credible platform for menswear in India- Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights 2017. Happy to try out this new layered attire, loving the Fall-winter look. I am looking forward to come back again.”
Raghavendra Rathore, known for his sharp tailoring and classic cuts, brought Day 1 to a regal finish. Showcasing on the ramp after 2 years in Mumbai, Rathore’s collection ‘Bandhgala Alliance’ paid a tribute to the classic Indian garment which has now become synonymous world-wide with crisp tailoring and effortless style. He exemplified beautifully how one iconic piece of menswear formal clothing can also inspire an entire collection for women, classic in cut yet elegant in styling. In addition to the Bandhgala, there was an array of everlasting and sophisticated silhouettes like jodhpur breeches, waistcoats, kurtas, achkans, dresses, and evening wear tunics. For women, the clothes merged beautifully from structured to flowy shapes, carefully thought through by the choice of fabrics which were both sheer and dreamy and robust at the same time whilst presenting a sharp tailored cut.
Sharing his thoughts post the conclusion of Day 1 of Van Heusen & GQ Fashion Nights 2017, Che Kurrien, Editor, GQ said, “What we witnessed tonight is some of the best menswear ever seen on the ramp in India, with a variety of styles that underscores the depth and rage of the Fashion Nights platform”.
Mr. Abhay Bahugune, Chief Operating Officer (COO) – Van Heusen, Aditya Birla Fashion and Lifestyle Ltd. commented, “Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights was launched in 2015 and has since then created a new milestone in the men’s fashion industry in the country. We are happy to have taken the 3rd edition to new heights and unveiled a truly international collection. We chose the colour green as the theme because it is going to be really big, and in trend, and when combined with modern tailoring and eclectic accents it makes an impeccable impact.”
Talking about the show, Shantanu & Nikhil said, “Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights has given us just the right platform to do what we know best, which is to narrate the glorious chapters of India in its most modernistic way. Our third consecutive showcase at GQ for our SS’18 Collection Thar which celebrates #IndiaOnTheMove initiative of the millennials was no less than a surreal journey for us. We couldn’t have asked for a better unveiling!”
Speaking about the collection, Rathore said, “’Bandhgala Alliance’ is an unspoken union between the sexes over a garment so definitive yet so versatile. With focus right down to the minute, and well thought out customization of all intricate details, the collection evolves and redefines the contemporary man and woman’s formal and evening wear wardrobe. The surface
embellishments have a timeless and lustrous quality to them, further adding subtle richness and overall appeal.”
Sahil Aneja added, “Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights is undoubtedly one of the best platforms for men who are fashion aficionados. I firmly believe an association with GQ will help me develop further, and expand my horizons as I compete in this ever-expanding, vibrant and exciting menswear industry.”
Ujjawal Dubey said, “It is exciting to be back at Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights this year. At Antar-Agni, we love GQ and believe that this is the best platform when it comes to men’s fashion.”
Dhruv Kapoor commented, “It is always an honour being a part of the GQ family! The platform remains unmatched.”
The tailored platform for menswear fashion created by Van Heusen and GQ India, showcased a plethora of style and appeal. The night saw unique trends that were urbane and slick, catering proficiently to the modern Indian men.
Day 1 of Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights 2017 Shantanu & Nikhil, Ujjawal Dubey, Sahil Aneja, Dhruv Kapoor, and Raghavendra Rathore unveil their latest menswear collections on Day 1 of Van Heusen + GQ Fashion Nights 2017…

Abdülmecid I
HISTORY
Abdülmecid I
Dolmabahçe Palace was ordered by the Empire’s 31st Sultan, Abdülmecid I, and built between the years 1843 and 1856. Previously, the Sultan and his family had lived at the Topkapı Palace, but as the medieval Topkapı was lacking in contemporary style, luxury, and comfort, as compared to the palaces of the European monarchs, Abdülmecid decided to build a new modern palace near the site of the former Beşiktaş Sahil Palace, which was demolished. Hacı Said Ağa was responsible for the construction works, while the project was realized by architects Garabet Balyan, his son Nigoğayos Balyan and Evanis Kalfa.
The construction cost five million Ottoman gold lira, or 35 tonnes of gold, the equivalent of ca. $1.5 billion in today’s (2013) values. This sum corresponded to approximately a quarter of the yearly tax revenue. Actually, the construction was financed through debasement, by massive issue of paper money, as well as by foreign loans. The huge expenses placed an enormous burden on the state purse and contributed to the deteriorating financial situation of the Ottoman Empire, which eventually defaulted on its public debt in October 1875, with the subsequent establishment in 1881 of financial control over the “sick man of Europe” by the European powers.
The palace was home to six Sultans from 1856, when it was first inhabited, up until the abolition of the Caliphate in 1924: The last royal to live here was Caliph Abdülmecid Efendi. A law that went into effect on March 3, 1924 transferred the ownership of the palace to the national heritage of the new Turkish Republic. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey, used the palace as a presidential residence during the summers and enacted some of his most important works here. Atatürk spent the last days of his medical treatment in this palace, where he died on November 10, 1938.
Today, the palace is managed by Milli Saraylar Daire Başkanlığı (Directorate of National Palaces) responsible to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The only way to see the interior of Dolmabahçe is with a guided tour.
LOCATION The site of Dolmabahçe was originally a bay on the Bosphorus which was used for the anchorage of the Ottoman fleet. The area was reclaimed gradually during the 18th century to become an imperial garden, much appreciated by the Ottoman sultans; it is from this garden that the name Dolmabahçe (Filled-in Garden) comes from the Turkish dolma meaning “filled” and bahçe meaning “garden.”
Various small summer palaces and wooden pavilions were built here during the 18th and 19th centuries ultimately forming a palace complex named Beşiktaş Waterfront Palace. The area of 110,000 m² is confined by Bosphorus on the east side, while a steep precipice bounds it on the west side, such that after the building of the new 45,000 m² monoblock Dolmabahçe Palace a relatively limited space has remained for a garden complex which would normally surround such a palace.
LAYOUT and DESIGN
Fountain in the garden
Dolmabahçe is the largest palace in Turkey. It has an area of 45,000 m2 (11.1 acres), and contains 285 rooms, 46 halls, 6 baths (hamam) and 68 toilets.
The design contains eclectic elements from the Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical styles, blended with traditional Ottoman architecture to create a new synthesis. The palace layout and décor reflect the increasing influence of European styles and standards on Ottoman culture and art during the Tanzimat period. The exterior, in particular the view from the Bosporus, shows a classical European two-wing arrangement which is divided by a big avant-corps with two side avant-corps.
Functionally, on the other hand, the palace retains elements of traditional Ottoman palace life, and also features of traditional Turkish homes. It is strictly separated structurally in a southern wing (Mabeyn-i Hümâyûn, or Selamlık, the quarters reserved for the men) which contains the public representation rooms, and a northern wing (Harem-i Hümâyûn, the Harem) serving as the private residential area for the Sultan and his family. The two functional areas are separated by the big Ceremonial Hall (Muayede Salonu) with a floor area of 2,000 m2 (22,000 sq ft) and a 36 m (118 ft) high dome. Since the harem had to be completely isolated from the outside world, the main entrance for the visitors is located on the narrow southern side. There, the representation rooms are arranged for receptions of visitors and of foreign diplomats. The harem area includes eight interconnected apartments for the wives of the sultan, for his favourites and concubines, and for his mother, each with its own bathroom.
DECOR and EQUIPMENT
Ceremonial Hall, with the chandelier said to have been given by Queen Victoria
Whereas the Topkapı has exquisite examples of Iznik tiles and Ottoman carving, the Dolmabahçe palace is extensively decorated with gold and crystal. Fourteen tonnes of gold were used to gild the ceilings.[5] The world’s largest Bohemian crystal chandelier is in the Ceremonial Hall. The chandelier was assumed to be a gift from Queen Victoria, however in 2006 the receipt was found showing it was paid for in full. It has 750 lamps and weighs 4.5 tonnes. Dolmabahçe has the largest collection of Bohemian and Baccarat crystal chandeliers in the world. The famous Crystal Staircase has the shape of a double horseshoe and is built of Baccarat crystal, brass and mahogany.
Expensive stones such as Marmara (Proconnesian) marble, Egyptian alabaster (calcite, also known as onyx-marble), and Porphyry from Pergamon were used for the decoration.
The palace includes a large number of Hereke palace carpets made by the Hereke Imperial Factory. Also featured are 150-year-old bearskin rugs originally presented to the Sultan as a gift by Tsar Nicholas I.
A collection of 202 oil paintings is on display in the palace. A highlight of the collection are 23 paintings by Ivan
Crystal Staircase with Baccarat crystal banisters and chandelier
Aivazovsky which he created as a court painter during his stays in Istanbul.[6] The collection also includes paintings by Gustave Boulanger, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Eugène Fromentin, Stanisław Chlebowski, Félix Ziem, Karl Joseph Kuwasseg, Fausto Zonaro, Théo van Rysselberghe and Alexander Sandor Svoboda. There are also paintings by Turkish painters such as Osman Hamdi Bey, Halil Pasha and Osman Nuri Pasha in this art museum.
From the very beginning, the palace’s equipment implemented the highest technical standards. Gas lighting and water-closets were imported from Great Britain, whereas the palaces in continental Europe were still lacking these features at that time. Later, electricity, a central heating system and an elevator were installed.
ROOMS Medhal (Main Entrance) Hall A visit to the Dolmabahce Palace begins at the Medhal Hall. Rooms leading off the Medhal are towards the sea and the land. The rooms facing the sea were used by the leading Ottoman officials, the Grand Vizier and the other state ministers, while the rooms facing the land were used by various administrators of the palace and the state, such as the Palace Marshall, Şeyhülislam, and members of the House of Representatives (Meclis-i Mebusan) and the Senate (Meclis-i Ayan).
Guests would first wait in this hall and then would be led inside at the proper time by a palace protocol officer. On entering the Medhal, one sees Boulle tables on both sides of the room, which bear the monogram of Sultan Abdülmecid on top. The royal monogram of the sultan is also on the fireplace. The English chandelier hanging in the middle of this room has sixty arms. The Hereke fabrics used as upholstery for the furniture and as draperies are in the royal shade of red.
The secretariat’s rooms The second room after the Medhal to the right is the Clerk’s Hall, also referred to as the Tiled Room. The largest painting in the palace collection, a depiction of the Surre Procession by Stefano Ussi, hangs on the left wall of this hall. Surre was used to refer to the caravans which travelled from Istanbul to Mecca during the religious month of Recep, bearing the monetary aid used to support the maintenance and the decoration of the Kaaba and to provide financial assistance to the local population of Hejaz.
Atatürk’s deathbed On the wall to the right is a painting signed by Rudolf Ernst depicting the fire at the Paris Municipal Theater and another painting of a Dutch Village Girl by Delandre. Decorated with French style furniture, this room also contains very valuable porcelain vases.
Atatürk’s room Mustafa Kemal Atatürk spent the last days of his life in the palace as his health deteriorated. He died at 9:05 A.M. on November 10, 1938, in a bedroom located in the former harem area of the palace. All the clocks in the palace were stopped and set to 9:05 after his death. The clocks outside of his room now are set to the actual time in Turkey, but the clock in the room in which he died still points to 9:05.

You bought a Versys and you have done two long rides of 4000 km each, the last ride was in January and its already 8 months itching for a same kind of ride.
With the itch missing that pain in the butt I started planning my ride to somewhere which would have good roads and as well some beautiful places to see.
I was just checking my Instagram and a Photo that really stayed with me was the Canyons of Gandikota or also knows Grand Canyon of India, Gandikota.
Next thing that I did was to open the Google map and check out the number of Kms from Hyderabad to Gandikota, it was just 700 km to and fro and I know I wanted to do some more. I chalked out a way through Nalamalla forest reaching Giddalur enjoying the off country roads and twists that Nalamalla forest was to offer. To add to my excitement it showed a Total 967 km on Google map.
Well, the next best thing to excite would be turned in to a Camping trip like Sipping a hot coffee out of your tent on the canyons of Gandikota making it more memorable and bringing in a new experience.
As this was going to be my first time to try to root a tent on the ground, make food and sit back and relax, My bro Kaustubh came to rescue and said I also join.
Planning.
Where to find a tent on rent- Google has really made our lives very easy, Within minutes I connected to Naresh who quoted me 275 rupees per day for tent and I agreed on even if it sounded expensive because I knew this is an operating cost and not a capital asset to me.(recently learnt these words)
The plan was chalked out by first visiting the Malella thirthum waterfalls which fall underway, then Nemaligundla waterfall by afternoon and reaching Gandikota by evening.
September 01-2017
We started with a big goof up, I ordered a Tent, 2 Sleeping bags, Lamp, and two floor mats but the tenting guys just delivered tent, Lamp, and two mats but no sleeping bags, I was in the mind that sleeping bags are necessary and it would be delivered only by 10.30 in the night and we had to start our trip by 4.00 in the morning. It was delivered a late night to Kaustubh and after receiving confirmation from him I went off to sleep by 11.30. I dont like when my sleep is deprived on a day before my ride.
Sept 02-2017,
3.00 clock in the morning the alarms went off to start the day with packing all my stuff and I was ready by 3.30 to set up the following things in my bag,
A pan
First aid box,
Bedsheet
2 pairs of clothes
Towels and toiletries
Cain lube and clean,
Puncture kit and air pump
Tent
Rubber Mat
Packed all the above stuff in Giant loop bag supplied by Motousher (http://www.motousher.com/) and I was off to go when I receive a call from Kaustubh that he will not be able to carry the sleeping bags as they are quite big,
Packing all my stuff in Giant loop supplied by Motousher
We i.e Sahil and Kaustubh had decided to reach the Wells Fargo meeting point by 4.15 in the morning which was now going to get delayed if I had to visit Kaustubh to pack the sleeping bags on my bike and then start off.
I packed all the stuff on the bike and tightened it with bungee cords and pushed off to Kaustubh place at 4.00 AM to pick the sleeping bags.
The Camping trip in making – Packing stuff on motorcycle
Reaching Kaustubh place saw him still getting ready and I was sweating inside which made me irritated and I don’t like this last minute change of plans and he knew he if he says any word now I would blast at him. He made sure that everything was done is a wink of an eye and started to our common meeting point at 4.30 AM.
We reset our Odos and started off to meet Sahil at the discussed meeting point and reached there by 4.45 AM
At the meeting point, Sahil observed that the Engine lamp of his Z800 is not going off even after riding. I requested him not to take any risk and if he could to bring his new Yamaha FZ250 to the ride to ensure he enjoys his ride.
Seeing this I and Kaustubh pushed off to the airport and told him we will be waiting at the start of the srisailum highway till he rejoins us with his new Bike.
We reached the end point of Airport road and waited there for 20 min and saw Sahil joining us at 5.50 AM.
With no time more to lose, we started to head our ways to the first point i.emalellathirthum waterfall.
189 km showing from Hyderabad we expected to reach there by 8.30 as targeted previously to reach by 7.00 am. we reached Malella Thirthum by 8.10 which was pretty decent as the roads were nice, no traffic and it was a Nonstop run from the last point that made us reach soon.
To reach this waterfall is by taking left after you ascend the Nalamlla forest hills towards srisailum and when you see a board showing 50 km more to Srisailum is where you have to take left to reach this place. The approaching part to this viewpoint is a 22 km trail road made of soft gravel. The video below gives you an idea of how the road is. Its approx 16 km of trail road to cover and reach this point.
Mallela Thirthum waterfall approach road status
After reaching this point total of 365 steps to be taken down the hill to reach this beautiful waterfall. The Mallela thirthum waterfall is known for its beauty as it lies amidst thick forest and the way it looks. The pictures below will justify the looks.
We had some tomato Bread that we carried with us and a tomato was supplied by the locals there. We really enjoyed it as we were very hungry and the heat was already taking a toll on us. the 365 steps down.
Cold water droplets
We spent time for about 45 min taking rest and started our way back climbing the not so maintained steps towards our motorcycles. We were exhausted and dehydrated with jackets on us and Sun rising high wet weather becoming from cooler to warmer.
After 230 kms of ride and you see a bench near waterfall.
We started our journey to Nemali Gundla waterfalls at 10.00 AM and stopped for chai. We checked the timings and as per our plan, we had to reach Gandilota fort by evening so that we can have some time for cooking and setting up the tent.
We decided to skip Nemali gundla visit and start afresh direct to Gandikota,
Crazy leans, lovely green surrounding, well-marked black tarred roads and the cool breeze is what you get when you pass the Nalamalla forest via Gidaalur towards Gandikota. The roads are just made so good that you would love to redo that stretch and enjoy everything once again.
This road is made to its best with great leans
Dam with such glory
Gandikota was showing 16 kms and we had reached Jammalmagadu a small town which is the nearest to the Gandikota fort and you can get everything here from wood to food. We collected everything needed and started to gandikota fort.
I had seen in pictures before riding there that the fort is massive and the fort is built around the Gandikota gorge which makes it look more beautiful. While we were entering the Gandikota fort in the evening at 7.00 thoughts were running in my mind that it’s already dark, finding a place for camping going to be tough and we will have to investigate our surrounding meticulously because we do want to be a bait for the creature present there.
We analyzed the surrounding and found a place in the which looked perfect to set our tent and start dinner.
Now, who is going to set up the tent? Now the basics of setting up a tent were required which we did not have, We had this tent laid out in the dark figuring out what these long rods do and where do they go so that the would look like a tent. I hope you guys understand what I am trying to say. We had never set up a tent, We did not know how to do it, We were in pitch dark looking at the tent, trying to figure what should we do and it was a chaos as we were hungry within and minds were tried with tent not showing its shape.
Alas eureka and we get it, we got the Tent to how it would look like when its a fully formed tent by holding it and then we slowly put all the puzzle together to form the tent. aaaah a sigh of relief otherwise we shiting to sleep on the rocks that night with the open sky above us was not a good option with all the insects and rains expected that would help keep awake whole night.
We lit the fire using petrol and had our delicious dinner and went off to sleep, with a loud thunder we all woke up to realize after that it was going to rain and all our gear was lying outside.
We moved major stuff inside the tent and other things are packed in a waterproof bag. Thanks to god I was carrying my Giant loop bag which is completely waterproof.
September 03-2017
5.48 Am was the sunrise, the time had come to see the Gandikota gorge in the sunrise, to capture the time-lapse moment of the sunrise and enjoy the beautiful views it had to offer.
Words tend to be less to describe the beauty of it, it’s only when u experience it is when you have the special feeling about it.
With smiles on our faces, we returned to our tents and started packing our stuff on motorcycles.
Belum Caves,
The Belum Caves is the largest and longest cave system open to the public on the Indian subcontinent, known for its speleothems, such as stalactite and stalagmite formations, underground cave system was formed over the course of tens of thousands of years by the constant flow of underground water.
it’s very humid inside and you tend to sweat a lot inside the caves, so be hydrated before you start your exploration in Belum caves. Guides are free but they will ask you a tip at the end. The guides are locals and they show you all the important locations inside the cave which takes around 2 hours finish looking inside the cave.
guides will show you Indian Bats that are in the cave which is hanging upside down on the walls of the cave. not much of attraction to me though. \
Then started our return journey to home, 370 km of mixed roads till Kurnool and super fast plush roads from Kurnool to Hyderabad. We had our lunch in Kurnool and I started to feel sleepy while riding. I had done approx 50 km slowly and way ahead I could see my bro waiting. He too was feeling sleepy. We chit chatted for 10 min and started, it was 150 km from there and we did that in flat 90 min. second fastest run for us after our Rajasthan ride.
We reached out home safely by 6.30. We got freshened and reached OTM straightway to celebrate this ride with beer.
All the best guys, keep riding and enjoy, be safe.

Gandikota – you need to see to believe it!!! You bought a Versys and you have done two long rides of 4000 km each, the last ride was in January and its already 8 months itching for a same kind of ride.

Taapsee Pannu’s look at the recently concluded IIFA 2017 wasn’t inspiring at all. The Naam Shabana actor who stepped out in a red gown by Kommal Sood committed a fashion faux pas by going for a make-up perfect for Indian wear complete with a bindi and red roses on her bun. We were a little disappointed as she is someone whose styling, more often than not, is on point. So, we were waiting for her to get back to India to show us her fashion prowess and guess what? She did!
Celebrity stylist Devki B styled the beauty in an unique plum top from Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna with a pair of Kate Spade denims.
It’s not an easy top to carry with the asymmetrical tailoring and long trailing strap flowing effortlessly in the wind but if you want to look like fashionable while been constantly on your feet, it’s the perfect pick. We love her simple messy hairdo and minimal make-up.
Another look we like is her in this quirky print skirt from Sahil Kochhar which she paired with a white lace top and earrings from Gioielli by Parneet Thukral for her upcoming film Anando Brahma.
She could have let her hair down for this one, to make it more contemporary and also experimented with a black sheer top. Nevertheless, she looked good.
Pannu has also been seen wearing a lot of ruffles. The first look is of her in a marsala toned dress with a asymmetrical denim neckline from Anome’s Split collection which she wore with a pair of strappy nude heels.
We like her hair and make-up but we are not a big fan of the dress.
The same is the case with her second outfit. The separates from Kukoon are pretty but they don’t look good together.
The ruffled skirt would have looked better with a white top. Also, the length of the pussy bow-tie hides its beauty.
Which look do you like the most? Let us know in the comments below.

Sahil Sharma's insight:
Specialty optical fiber is modified, usually by doping, for a specialized function. It consists of one or more transparent fibers enclosed in a protective covering. The core and cladding are typically grouped together and collectively called the optical fiber. Specialty optical fibers have various characteristics that suit a specialized application.
Specialty optical fibers play a critical role in many industries, particularly in telecommunications. They are replacing copper metal wire due to their many advantages. Specialty optical fibers are thinner than metal wire, lightweight, and non-flammable because no electricity is passed through them. The fibers are flexible and can be used in digital cameras for medical, mechanical, and investigative imaging. Specialty optical fibers can perform with low power, and have a higher carrying capacity than metal wires. Senate Has Beauregard For The Truth
Like what you read below? Sign up for HUFFPOST HILL and get a cheeky dose of political news every evening!
The alt-right took a break from being crusaders for Western civilization to attack Shakespeare. Melania and Barron Trump moved into the White House, meaning less room for Steve Bannon’s collection of display jars containing fingers preserved in embalming fluid. And President Trump made his Cabinet members take turns to praise him, so maybe we should’ve let him get all his Kim Jong-un impulses out of his system by letting him have those tanks for his inaugural parade. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Monday, June 12th, 2017:
COURT UPHOLDS TRAVEL BAN BLOCK - Elise Foley: “The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit on Monday upheld a block on Trump’s executive order that sought a 90-day travel ban to the U.S. for most nationals of six Muslim-majority nations and to suspend all refugee resettlement for 120 days. In doing so, the court cited one of Trump’s tweets ― and the fact that the White House acknowledged last week that they can be considered ‘official statements’ of the administration. ‘[T]he President recently confirmed his assessment that it is the ‘countries’ that are inherently dangerous, rather than the 180 million individual nationals of those countries who are barred from entry under the President’s ‘travel ban,’’ the ruling says. The judges then quoted a tweet from Trump on June 5, which said the U.S. needs ‘a TRAVEL BAN for certain DANGEROUS countries, not some politically correct term that won’t help us protect our people!’” [HuffPost]
GOP SENATE WON’T RELEASE HEALTH CARE BILL - Caitlin Owens: “Senate Republicans are working to finish their draft health care bill, but have no plans to publicly release it, according to two senior Senate GOP aides. ‘We aren’t stupid,’ said one of the aides. One issue is that Senate Republicans plan to keep talking about it after the draft is done: ‘We are still in discussions about what will be in the final product so it is premature to release any draft absent further member conversations and consensus.’ … It’ll take CBO about two weeks to evaluate and score a draft bill. Senate Republicans then want to vote on the bill before the July 4th recess. The draft bill had been expected to be finished tonight, but aides say the timing has slipped.” [Axios]
SESSIONS WILL TESTIFY IN OPEN HEARING - A shot for every invocation of executive privilege. Julia Edwards Ainsley: “U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will testify publicly to a Senate panel on Tuesday, its chairman said, setting up another potentially dramatic hearing on possible ties between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential race. Sessions is likely to face tough questioning from Senate Intelligence Committee members over his dealings with Russian officials during the campaign and whether he had a role in the firing of former FBI Director James Comey, who testified last week before the same panel. Until a statement on Monday from committee Chairman Richard Burr, a Republican, it had been unclear whether Sessions would testify in an open or closed setting.” [Reuters]
Haircuts: Marina Fang (h/t Marina Fang), Dave Jamieson (h/t Marina Fang), Ryan Grim (h/t Ryan Grim), Eliot Nelson (h/t Eliot Nelson), Sahil Kapur (h/t Todd Zwillich)

MARYLAND, D.C. AGs SUE TRUMP - Or, “Yes, D.C. Has An Attorney General.” Christina Wilkie: “Attorneys general from the District of Columbia and Maryland filed suit Monday against President Donald Trump, alleging that Trump’s ongoing ownership of his real estate empire violates constitutional provisions that prohibit the president of the United States from receiving money from both American states and foreign governments. ‘President Trump’s continued ownership interest in a global business empire, which renders him deeply enmeshed with a legion of foreign and domestic government actors, violates the Constitution,’ the complaint reads. Examples of alleged violations of the Emoluments Clause include, according to the plaintiffs, ‘leases of Trump properties held by foreign-government-owned entities; purchase and ownership of condominiums in Trump properties by foreign governments or foreign government controlled entities; [and] other property interests or business dealings tied to foreign governments.’” [HuffPost]
Another Democrat hankering for impeachment: “A Democratic congressman has drafted an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump and plans to file his legislation in the coming days. In a Monday letter to all House members, Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) lays out why he thinks there’s enough evidence to begin impeachment proceedings against Trump and provides a copy of his proposed article of impeachment.” [HuffPost’s Jennifer Bendery]
GIANFORTE PLEADS GUILTY - Dude should still call Michael Grimm for advice. Chris D’Angelo: “Greg Gianforte, the millionaire Republican who on the eve of Montana’s special election for its U.S. House seat was accused of ‘body-slamming’ a reporter, pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor assault, according to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. After initially sentencing Gianforte to four days in jail, Gallatin County Justice Court Judge Rick West reduced the penalty. Instead of jail time, Gianforte must perform 40 hours of community service, complete 20 hours of anger management training and pay $385 in fines and fees.” [HuffPost]
Daniel Marans reports from Bernie Sanders’ People’s Summit in Chicago.
THIS WAS SO WEIRD - Next time, Trump should make the Cabinet play a sing-song name game (” My name is Betsy *clap* *clap* Busy Betsy! ”). Igor Bobic: “President Donald Trump invited his top employees to shower him with compliments on Monday. They happily obliged, one-by-one, on live television. During a Cabinet meeting at the White House, the president touted the ‘record-setting pace’ of his legislative agenda and claimed ‘never has there been a president, with few exceptions’ who has accomplished more while in office…. White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, who appears to be under constant threat of losing his job, thanked the president for ‘the opportunity and blessing to serve your agenda.’” [HuffPost]
Chuck Schumer’s office filmed a spoof of this.
GRAB HIM BY THE P*SSY - The most ridiculous development involving this meaning of the word “pussy” since Gary Johnson called Donald Trump one. Asawin Suebsaeng: “On Sunday morning, President Donald Trump woke up early to again vent his frustrations on Twitter, his preferred medium. Among @realDonaldTrump’s grievances was that the fired FBI director was ‘very’ much so a coward…. It’s the president personally getting in on what one senior Trump administration official described to The Daily Beast as the ‘Comey is a pussy’ offensive’ ‘It minimizes [Comey and] undermines the seriousness of his testimony and claims,’ the official noted, chuckling. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity so as to speak freely.” [Daily Beast]
CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES STILL BACKING TRUMP - WWJD? Vote for Trump, apparently. Eliot: “These political crusaders cited the president’s accomplishments ― like appointing conservative Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court and loosening restrictions on religious institutions engaging in political activity ― as evidence that Trump himself is a near-miracle…. ‘I am genuinely excited about what God is doing in America right now,’ proclaimed Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.).... Indeed, to hear the language employed by speakers and attendees at last week’s gathering, Trump the ally ― the crude but reliable vector for the Christian conservative agenda ― is a welcome development, though Trump’s personal morality doesn’t meet their standards. Even if they think eternal hellfire may await the commander-in-chief in the hereafter, for the time being all they can hear is harps.” [HuffPost]
Here is a stupid thing, in case you missed it: “New York’s Public Theater lost financial support from two high-profile corporate donors, Delta Air Lines and Bank of America, on Sunday amid intense criticism of its production of Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar,’ which depicts the assassination of a Trump-like Roman ruler. The companies’ decisions came after days of criticism online and in right-leaning media outlets that was amplified by Donald Trump Jr., a son of the president, who appeared to call into question the theater’s funding sources on Twitter on Sunday morning.” [NYT’s Liam Stack]
If this weren’t stupid enough, Delta once sponsored a production that featured an Obama-like Caesar.
Dang, SCOTUS is loaded! “Newly appointed U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch is selling his family home in Boulder, Colorado, for $1,675,000…. At least six justices are worth at least $1 million, according to a Center for Public Integrity analysis of 2016 financial disclosures released last week by the Administrative Office of the U.S. courts.” [Newsweek’s Michele Gordon]
WHEW, AMERICA FINALLY HAS COVERAGE FOR THE SABBATH - Journalists everywhere thank Melania Trump for giving them their weekends back. Nina Golgowski: “First lady Melania Trump and her son, Barron, have officially moved into the White House, almost five months after President Trump was sworn into office. She celebrated the moment on Twitter Sunday night while sharing a photo overlooking the Washington Monument. It included the hashtag #Movingday. ‘Looking forward to the memories we’ll make in our new home!’ she tweeted…. Melania had stayed behind in New York City until 11-year-old Barron completed his academic school year. The president’s youngest child will attend St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland, starting this fall, the school had previously announced.” [HuffPost]
ATTRACTIVE RICH PERSON UNACCUSTOMED TO CRITICISM - If Ivanka really wants to see “viciousness,” she should check out her old man’s Twitter feed. Jenna Amatulli: “During a Monday morning appearance on ‘Fox & Friends,’ Ivanka Trump said she was caught off guard by the ‘viciousness’ and ‘ferocity’ directed at her father, President Donald Trump…. ‘It is hard. And there is a level of viciousness that I was not expecting. I was not expecting the intensity of this experience,’ she said.” [HuffPost]

COVFEFE FINDS ITS WAY INTO THE CONGRESSIONAL RECORD - Now it’s your turn, Bqhatevwr. Paige Lavender: Paige Lavender: “Spurred by what has become one of President Donald Trump’s more famous tweets, Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) introduced the COVFEFE Act on Monday. The bill actually has a serious intent, calling for the official record-keeping of a president’s words to include social media feeds…. Trump’s social media feeds prompted Quigley, co-founder of the Congressional Transparency Caucus, to introduce the Communications Over Various Feeds Electronically for Engagement ― COVFEFE ― bill, which would amend the Presidential Records Act to include the term ‘social media’ as documentary material.” [HuffPost]
Honorable mention: “Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03) today will introduce legislation to ensure Donald Trump has a stake in the catastrophic consequences of ignoring climate science. The Prohibiting Aid for Recipients Ignoring Science (PARIS) Act will prevent properties owned by a president or his or her family from receiving federally subsidized flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).” [Rep. Blumenauer’s office]
