The NFL’s top contenders for the Super Bowl, ranked

Let’s rank every team left standing in the 2021 NFL playoffs.

The dust has settled on the opening weekend of action in the NFL playoffs with eight teams remaining in the hunt to make the trip to Tampa Bay for Super Bowl LV on Feb. 7. Four games will take place next weekend to determine who faces off in each conference championship game.

Super Wild Card weekend was headlined by the Cleveland Browns’ upset win over the Steelers. Their prize for winning? A date with the top-seeded Kansas City Chiefs, who are trying to win back-to-back Super Bowls. In the NFC, the No. 1 seed Green Bay Packers will face a Los Angeles Rams team that advanced out of the opening weekend despite suffering several injuries to key players. Elsewhere, we have a pair of intriguing quarterback matchups featuring the future of the position (Lamar Jackson vs. Josh Allen) and two of its all-time greats (Drew Brees vs. Tom Brady).

Who looks best positioned to hoist the Lombardi Trophy of the teams that are left? Here is the rest of the playoff field, ranked.

8. Cleveland Browns

The Browns’ first playoff appearance in 18 years came as head coach Kevin Stefanski and several key players (including All-Pro guard Joel Bitonio) were out because of Covid protocol. As if that weren’t enough, Cleveland was facing its long-time rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers, on the road, where they haven’t won since 2003. Just when it felt like the Browns were still cursed even after finally making the playoffs, Cleveland responded with a thrilling 48-37 win that pushes them into the Divisional Round.

Cleveland scored a defensive touchdown on the very first play from scrimmage. Baker Mayfield threw for 263 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Nick Chubb added 76 yards on the ground, while fellow running back Kareem Hunt got into the end zone twice. The Browns are going to have their work cut out for them against the top-seeded Chiefs next week, but the win over the Steelers was the type that should be celebrated by the fanbase for years to come.

7. Los Angeles Rams

Though offense has been the Rams’ calling card for much of Sean McVay’s tenure thus far, defense was their biggest strength in 2020, and that continued in their 30-20 playoff win over the Seahawks in Seattle. The Rams made Russell Wilson look awful as he completed just 11-of-27 passes for 174 yards with a pick and two scores while taking five sacks.

The offense got an unexpected spark when Jared Goff came off the bench in relief of John Wolford, who left the game after a big hit from Jamal Adams. Goff managed the game well while throwing for 155 yards and a score as he’s recovering from thumb surgery, but the Rams will need more from him to make a deep playoff run.

The real story on offense was rookie running back Cam Akers, who torched Seattle for 131 yards and a score on 28 carries while grabbing two passes for 45 yards. After battling for touches in the regular season, Akers has left no doubt he’s the best back for this offense moving forward.

Unfortunately, the Rams lost Aaron Donald (ribs) and Cooper Kupp (contusion) to injuries, and their status for the Divisional Round is in doubt. If the Rams are to beat the Green Bay Packers and make a deep playoff run, they need both of those guys in the lineup, especially Donald, a strong candidate for NFL Defensive Player the Year.

6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Despite entering the game as 10-point favorites, the Buccaneers were pushed to the limit by the Taylor Heinicke-led Washington Football Team before holding on for a 31-23 win. Tampa’s top-10 defense struggled to stop Washington’s journeyman passer, but Tom Brady did what Tom Brady does in the playoffs, throwing for 381 yards and two scores to win his first playoff game as a Buc while his former Patriots teammates and coaches sit at home for the postseason.

The offense looks primed for a big postseason, but the defense must play better to continue the playoff march. Next up for the Bucs is a Divisional Round showdown with the New Orleans Saints. In a meeting between two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks, Brady needs to show he’s the one with more left in the tank. If Tampa can match the 500+ yards of total offense they put up against Washington, they should have a good chance to continue their dream of playing in the Super Bowl on their home field.

5. New Orleans Saints

The Saints beat the Chicago Bears, 21-9, in the opening round in a game that wasn’t as close as the score might indicate. Chicago scored only a garbage time touchdown, and was held to just 239 yards of total offense. New Orleans is about to face a much stiffer test against Tom Brady and a Tampa Bay offense that put up more than 500 total yards against Washington in their own playoff opener.

If the Saints want to extend their playoff run, Brees will need to show he’s not just a shadow of his former self. Brees threw for 265 yards, two touchdowns, and no picks against the Bears, but it’s clear he doesn’t get nearly as much velocity on his throws as he used to. Star running back Alvin Kamara may be asked to do the heavy lifting. He ran for 99 yards against a good Bears defense, but he’s capable of doing more in the passing game. Brady vs. Brees might feel like an all-time matchup based on their history, but it’s more likely the game will be decided by the other players on the field.

4. Baltimore Ravens

Lamar Jackson has his first playoff win, and it came in impressive fashion as he exercised the demons of last year’s playoff loss to the Titans with 136 rushing yards and a score while throwing for 179 more in the Ravens’ 20-13 win in Tennessee.

The Ravens also snapped a streak of 21 straight losses in the regular season and playoffs when trailing by 10+ points. After going down 10-0 early vs. the Titans, Baltimore ended the game on a 20-3 run, held Derrick Henry to a mere 40 rushing yards, and won the total yardage battle 401-209.

It was the type of complete performance that makes Jackson and the Ravens look like a legitimate Super Bowl threat, but things are only going to get tougher from here. Josh Allen and a tough Buffalo Bills defense are waiting next week in a matchup of two of the brightest young quarterbacks in the league. While Jackson will deservedly get most of the attention, he’ll need to get another sublime performance from his defense that just smothered the Titans.

3. Buffalo Bills

The Bills had gone 25 years without winning a playoff game entering the weekend. That streak is no more.

Buffalo came away with a 27-24 win Saturday over the Colts to advance to the Divisional Round. Josh Allen was once again the star of the show, as he threw for 324 yards and ran for 54 more while accounting for all three of Buffalo’s touchdowns. However, Buffalo’s defense left a lot to be desired, as they allowed the 39-year-old Philip Rivers, who may retire this offseason, to throw for 309 yards and two scores while finishing with a season-high 91.9 QBR. Buffalo’s defense will have to be better against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens.

One thing that should make Buffalo feel better is the performance of wide receiver Stefon Diggs. The Bills’ big offseason acquisition went off for 1,500 yards receiving during the regular season, and followed it up by catching six passes for 128 yards and a touchdown in his playoff debut for Buffalo. Allen will be looking his way early and often against a great Baltimore defense.

2. Green Bay Packers

The Packers will be well rested when they begin their playoff run in the Divisional Round. After finishing the regular season ranked ninth in total defense and fifth in total offense behind likely NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, the top-seeded Packers enter the playoffs as the favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

Green Bay now draws the Los Angeles Rams in their playoff opener. LA looked dominant defensively in their win against Seattle, but several injuries to key players means the Packers are likely to be a big favorite ahead of kickoff. The spotlight will be on Rodgers, as it always is. He’ll be looking for top target Davante Adams throughout the game. Adams popped off for 115 receptions, 1,374 yards, and 18 touchdowns during a breakout regular season performance. We’ll believe someone can stop the Rodgers-Adams connection when we see it.

1. Kansas City Chiefs

What more is there to say about the Kansas City Chiefs? Quarterback Patrick Mahomes leads a perpetually dangerous and explosive offense back into the postseason as the frontrunners to win it all and defend their championship crown.

The Chiefs are coming off of a 14-2 regular season with one of those losses coming with an asterisk next to it seeing as it came in a Week 17 game where Mahomes and several star players sat out to rest up for the playoffs. The loss to the Los Angeles Chargers snapped a 10-game winning streak, but this is still one of the league’s hottest teams entering the Divisional Round.

If there are any concerns about the Chiefs, it might be that they coasted through portions of the regular season and could get bitten by thinking they could turn it on or off at any given time. Still, this team is loaded and ready for another run at the Lombardi Trophy. It would be an absolute shock if Kansas City struggles with the Browns in their playoff opener. The AFC still goes through KC.

RTARL’s NFL Week 6 Extravapalooza

In this reporter’s opinion, Week 6 brings us BY FAR the the strongest slate of games we’ve had this season. For example, a game pitting a normal squad against either Miami or Washington is automatically a dud based on their respective shittiness, but this week those two poor, unfortunate teams are facing EACH OTHER to determine the King of Crap Mountain. It’s a must-watch for fans of trashy entertainment, imo.

But that’s not all! We’ve also got a showdown pitting two “Future Face of the League”-level QBs against one another in Kansas City, Lamar Jackson facing a weak opponent that should allow him to do crazy things again, and several match-ups between legitimate playoff contenders. Even the boring-ass Titans and Broncos have the courtesy to confine themselves to a single game this week so they can be easily ignored. AND it all starts at 9:30 AM Eastern Time because of the NFL’s ridiculous insistence on playing games in a far away land that couldn’t care less about American football! It should be a fun day, please make sure you have plenty of snacks.

EARLY GAMES

9:30 AM EST Kickoff: Carolina Panthers (-2.5) vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers (in London)

Panthers QB Kyle Allen has made me look like a dumb dick for insisting that he sucks, there’s no doubt about it. That doesn’t mean I’m going to stop, of course. KYLE ALLEN ISN’T GOOD AND THE TEAM IS WINNING WITH DEFENSE AND MCCAFFERY! 

Speaking of the Panthers’ defense, CB James Bradberry is having an awesome season, and he should keep Bucs WR Mike Evans in check. This means that Tampa’s other stud WR, Chris Godwin, should feast once again. This will infuriate me personally, as someone who owns Evans in fantasy and traded away Godwin recently.

Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens (-11)

If the Ravens can’t take care of business against the beat-up, sad-sack Bengals, I’ll have no choice but to accept that I jumped the gun with my Lamar Jackson excitement. I’m picking them to beat the 11-point spread in large part because I long for the halcyon days of Week 2, when Lamar was racking up comical statistics and a man’s word still MEANT something, ya know?

Seattle Seahawks (-1.5) at Cleveland Browns

I think the fact that he’s one of the world’s foremost goobers obscures the fact that Russell Wilson is one of the best handful of players in the entire NFL. In all seriousness, how many QBs would you take over Wilson? For me, Patrick Mahomes and Gardner Minshew are the only guys I’d have ahead of him.

I’m torn between wanting the Browns to be good because I like a bunch of their players as individuals, and wishing for the comfort and reassurance that knowing that they are and always will be a smoldering trash heap provides. The Browns’ perpetual ineptitude can be the anchor we all need in these times of great upheaval. 

Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs (-4)

Mahomes! Watson! Hopkins! Hill (probably)! Watt! Mathieu! Hardman! Mercilus! I know the names of several players involved in this game!

This should be a fun one, I give the edge to K.C. because Andy Reid is way better than Bill O’Brien at this whole “coaching NFL football” thing.

New Orleans Saints at Jacksonville Jaguars (-2.5)

Philadelphia Eagles at Minnesota Vikings (-3)

This one feels like a tough, low-scoring brawl to me. I like it very much as a counterweight to the Chiefs-Texans for watchin’-em-up purposes. Eagles-Vikings will be a game dictated by field position, patience, and a few well-timed risks. A slow-burn that rewards those paying attention, as opposed to the constant pyrotechnics and roller-coaster action K.C. - Houston should provide. To put it into seasonally appropriate terms, Vikings-Eagles is “The VVitch,” Chiefs-Texans is “IT.” 

Washington Football Team (-3.5) at Miami Dolphins

I love this perfect storm of garbage so much. With the caveat that you should CLEARLY never take gambling advice from me, there’s no way in hell anyone should feel confident betting on this game in any form or fashion. There’s almost nothing that could happen during these 60 minutes (at least!) that would surprise me. 

LATE GAMES

Atlanta Falcons (-2.5) at Arizona Cardinals

I just can’t with the Falcons anymore. They need to make wholesale changes, in my opinion as a certified football genius. Hey, why not reunite Julio Jones with Kyle Shanahan and trade him to the 49ers? Jon Gruden would probably trade 4 1st round picks for Matt Ryan. BLOW IT UP! 

There’s a chance David Johnson isn’t going to play in this one, I’m making my pick assuming he will and that he’ll be close to his usual self. 

San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams (-3) 

I originally had the Rams here, but now that Todd Gurley has been ruled out I had to make a change. It’s not that Gurley has been even close to the MVP-level form he showed most of last season, but what he has been is a reliable safety-valve for Jared Goff in the passing game. The Chargers at home against a reeling Pittsburgh team starting undrafted free-agent rookie third-stringer Devlin Hodges at QB--what could go wrong? If there’s one team that could blow a layup like this, it is DEFINITELY the Phil Rivers-era Chargers. I’d be actively rooting for that very thing if their opponent were anyone other than the loathsome Steelers. I’m enjoying their demise too much to want it to stop now. 

Monday Night Game: Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers (-4)

I.....am buying the Lions being legit this season? This seems like a mistake, but here we are. I’ve always felt a kinship with Matthew Stafford since we’re both cursed/blessed with 12-year-old faces on the bodies of multimillionaire professional athletes. So, I’m rooting for him to lead Detroit to glory. I think the true star of this game will be Kerryon Johnson, because he’s awesome and Green Bay struggles defending the run. 

I’m enjoying the Aaron Rodgers-Matt LeFleur weekly sideline spats. I actually think their dynamic is much healthier than the passive-aggressive proxy war Rodgers was constantly waging with former Head Bitch In Charge Mike McCarthy. I reserve the right to change my mind on this if Rodgers strangles LeFleur with piano wire during this game.

How would recent NFL playoffs have looked with a 14-team field?

Had a proposed expansion of the NFL postseason been in place, the Chiefs would’ve had an extra playoff game to win this January.

The NFL has proposed a collective bargaining agreement that would alter the way the postseason works. Under the new CBA, the field of playoff teams will grow from 12 to 14.

The CBA proposal still needs to be approved by players before it goes into effect, but if it gets the green light just one team from each conference will be able to earn a first-round bye.

A third wild card berth will add mostly mediocre teams to the playoffs. Had the rule change been in place last season, the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs would’ve had to play the 8-8 Pittsburgh Steelers on Wild Card Weekend.

Would that have changed anything, though? Let’s imagine how the last three postseasons would’ve shaken out if it there had been a 14-team field:

The Chiefs’ road to Super Bowl 54 would’ve been a bit more difficult

Kansas City narrowly topped the Patriots for the second seed in the AFC, but that wouldn’t have resulted in a bye in this format.

What changes:

The addition of the Steelers and Rams probably doesn’t change much.

No NFL result is a given. There’s certainly a chance the Steelers or Rams pull off an upset. But in this hypothetical, we’ll assume the Chiefs and Packers survive an extra game each.

The most significant difference is that neither team enters the Divisional Round with a week’s worth of rest. The Chiefs aren’t quite as healthy when they host the Texans, nor are the Packers against the Seahawks.

In real life, Kansas City pulled off three double-digit comebacks to win the Lombardi Trophy. That’s more difficult with another game to play.

What stays the same:

If anything, this proves a 14-team playoff could play out exactly the same as one with 12 teams. The Ravens were the No. 1 seed in the AFC and went down anyway to the sixth-seeded Titans.

Kansas City won all three of its playoff games by at least 11 points. Even with a slightly tougher path, the best bet is that the Chiefs still win it all.

Super Bowl 53 could’ve been an entirely different matchup

In 2018, both the Rams and Patriots earned No. 2 seeds. That could’ve kept them out of Super Bowl 53 in a 14-team field.

What changes:

While the 2019 Steelers weren’t very intimidating with Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges at the helm, the 2018 Steelers were different. They had a healthy Ben Roethlisberger and finished the season 9-6-1. Pittsburgh did beat New England in a pivotal Week 15 matchup, though knocking off the Patriots in Foxboro is a tall order.

The extra week of rest also helped the Patriots, a team with 41-year-old quarterback Tom Brady, better prepare for its postseason run. New England barely made Super Bowl 53 by pulling off a come-from-behind overtime win against the Chiefs in the AFC Championship. Even a little more wear and tear probably prevents that result from coming to fruition.

The Rams also got to the Super Bowl by the skin of their teeth. They needed a horribly blown call and overtime to beat the Saints in the NFC Championship. Can they do the same thing in this alternate universe after a wild card matchup against the Vikings two weeks prior? Probably not.

What stays the same:

Not a whole lot. The Saints and Chiefs were the two No. 1 seeds and cruised through the Divisional Round. That still happens here, but now they’re better positioned to actually win their respective conferences and make the Super Bowl.

With so many close overtime results, it’s likely that the teams with first-round byes would’ve reigned supreme. Kansas City vs. New Orleans is our new Super Bowl, a much more exciting matchup than the Patriots’ 13-3 snoozefest win over the Rams. We’ll give the Saints the edge due to experience.

The Lions could’ve actually won a playoff game

Detroit hasn’t won a playoff game since January 1992. In the 28 years since, the Lions have lost on Wild Card Weekend eight times. If the NFL playoffs had 14 teams during the 2017 season, the Lions would’ve had a chance to snap that misfortunate streak.

What the new playoff bracket looks like:

AFC

No. 2 Steelers vs. No. 7 Ravens

No. 3 Jaguars vs. No. 6 Bills

No. 4 Chiefs vs. No. 5 Titans

No. 1 Patriots vs. lowest seeded wild card winner

NFC

No. 2 Vikings vs. No. 7 Lions

No. 3 Rams vs. No. 6 Falcons

No. 4 Saints vs. No. 5 Panthers

No. 1 Eagles vs. lowest seeded wild card winner

What changes:

Minnesota lost just three games in the 2017 season. Its only home loss was when the Lions came to town. Then, the Vikings got their revenge in Detroit on Thanksgiving.

In a 14-team postseason, the Vikings would’ve had to win a rubber match against Detroit. It could’ve been the Lions’ 10th consecutive playoff loss. But, hey, let’s throw them a bone and say they win. There’s a chance that changes a lot.

In the real timeline, Minnesota eliminated the Saints via a Minneapolis Miracle. Now New Orleans gets a home game against the seventh-seeded Lions. We’ll call that a ticket to the NFC Championship against the Eagles. That’s a hell of a matchup, but we’re still siding with Philadelphia’s Nick Foles magic.

What stays the same:

Just about everything else.

Even with a bye, the second-seeded teams didn’t have much success. The Vikings followed the Minneapolis Miracle by getting blown out in the NFC Championship. Pittsburgh didn’t even get through the Divisional Round.

The No. 1 seeds met in the Super Bowl, and there’s no reason to think that isn’t the case in this scenario too.

Super Bowl 52 result: Eagles beat the Patriots

Adding two more teams to the NFL playoffs would be a significant boost for No. 1 seeded teams, who become now the sole beneficiaries of a week off. However, the Ravens’ loss to the Titans in January is more than enough evidence that a first-round bye isn’t a free ticket to the Super Bowl.

Ultimately, the reshaped postseason could look a lot like the 12-team version the NFL has had for three decades. But even the little curveball of two more teams probably would’ve altered some recent Super Bowl results.

50-41 and a detailing of just what the hell I’m doing here. It’s important to remember right off the bat in this installment that I hate color on color.

#40. Super Bowl XLIX - Seattle Seahawks vs New England Patriots

The Seahawks remain a disaster but this is still better than their Super Bowl XL mud teal. White pants with this wouldn’t kill you. Hell, even a gray to match that shoulder stripe.

The modern Patriots presented a problem for me in these rankings since I have no strong feelings one way or the other. I think the numbers are kinda ugly but, just like the franchise, they’re a professional look with minimal bells and whistles. I prefer their home uniforms with the blue jersey and silver pants but the road whites are highly inoffensive.

Fuck this game by the way, Pete Carroll still owes me $50.

#39. Super Bowl VIII - Miami Dolphins vs Minnesota Vikings

The first appearance of the Miami Dolphins whose teal jerseys I harbor a fondness for. Whenever the current Dolphins bring them back all I can think of it “Why don’t they wear these full time”. Also love the old helmets with the dolphin wearing a helmet of his own, sad that in this current climate of CTE and concussion awareness Miami is no longer concerned about its logo’s long term mental health. This is a winning look and the Dolphins look fantastic in this photo.

So after waxing poetic about their look in Super Bowl VIII are they all the way down here? The purple, the goddamn purple. Not to spoil too much of what’s to come but this set of games might as well have been dedicated to Bud Grant.

#38. Super Bowl XXXVIII - New England Patriots vs Carolina Panthers

One of my favorite Super Bowls despite the buzzkill winner, just an incredibly weird game with zero points scored in the first and third quarters with the second and fourth being big play extravaganzas. As I talked about yesterday, this is my favorite Panther uniform but it’s still nothing special and the Patriots, now in their home blues, aren’t bringing much to the table while also not removing a whole lot.

We’re pretty much past awful uniform matchups in this reporter’s opinion (even with some more Vikings purple to come) which just goes to show how if you look good you play good so note the lack of Jaguars, Lions and Browns in any of these games.

#37. Super Bowl XIV - Pittsburgh Steelers vs Los Angeles Rams

Yup, same Rams uniforms from Super Bowl XXXIV with the weird blue in the helmets but we get our first look at the Steelers in all their black and gold glory that can elevate even the most pedestrian of opponent garb to another level.

There’s also something fun about how the respective uniforms tell the story of this game in that the big bad Steelers, three time champions, in the powerful black against the longshot upstart Rams in the more pleasant blue and yellow. Although sadly kids sometimes (most times) the underdog shows they’re the underdog for a reason. We do thank the Rams however for keeping the Super Bowl and the Rose Bowl where the game was played free of Buccaneer Bruce.

#36. Super Bowl IV - Kansas City Chiefs vs Minnesota Vikings

The Chiefs almost highhandedly pulled this game up to #36. That red is fire, the classic helment shines and I even like the racing stripe on the pants. For whatever reason in looking at pictures from this game I’m not even that bothered by the Vikings being involved. Wearing the road whites helps and the red and purple, at least to this reporter, compliment each other well.

FUN FACT: This, the first Super Bowl the Vikings made it to, saw them favored by 12 points only to lose by 16. After that people got wise and never expected them to win a big game again.

#35. Super Bowl XXXIII - Atlanta Falcons vs. Denver Broncos

A Super Bowl best remembered for a prostitution scandal and John Elway calling it a career after an MVP performance, Super Bowl XXXIII deserves some love for featuring the kickass Falcons Deion-era black uniforms. The Falcons, who will take the field on Sunday against New England, have elected to wear their home reds which is fine, but man I loved their old ones. The simplicity of the logo, silver pants instead of white and the red tinting, that’s the real shit.

Denver still looks like shit though, the side stripe going all the way to the collar was never my cup of tea. Too bad the Jets didn’t hold on in Denver and brought their road whites to this game.

#34. Super Bowl VII - Miami Dolphins vs Washington

There’s really nothing wrong with either of these uniforms, I still think the Dolphins look solid as hell and Washington with those dark gold pants are contributing nicely to the decor of the game. It’s just that a decade later these teams would face again with the home and road roles reversed and for my money it blows this one out of the water.

#33. Super Bowl XI - Minnesota Vikings vs Oakland Raiders

I’m embracing hypocrisy here on a couple levels since I’ve placed Viking home purple above a game I just said feature two nice uniforms and I’m letting the sun drenched Rose Bowl setting of this game and the photos it created influence my decision making.

But holy hell do those Raider silver and white uniforms work, especially against an opponent who’s really bringing a strong counter color. I’m loving this image so much it’s making me rethink the entire anti-Viking stance I’ve had going, but then I remember that purple is still butt and to use this moment for the first time to celebrate the Raiders.

#32. Super Bowl XLIV - Indianapolis Colts vs New Orleans Saints

I don’t really love the Saints road uniform and feel the pants look better with the black jersey. But I’ll take the classic Colts look every damn day (of course I understand the value of rebranding with new uniforms in a way to peddle more product but this old timer still appreciates the Colts and their lack of bullshit)   and think that in a weird way this mix of old timey success and new money (before 2009 for those too young to remember the Saints weren’t exactly known for glory) worked.

Fuck Hank Baskett for life though. Catch the ball.

#31. Super Bowl XXXV - New York Giants vs Baltimore Ravens

This is gonna sound dumb but for whatever reason I just remember this game looking great on TV despite it being a snoozer. I believe this was the first year the Giants switched back to their old timey helmet logo instead of the GIANTS one and akin to the Colts classic look, I appreciate the sleekness of the whole thing.

The Ravens meanwhile don’t completely sabotage the affair by being the road team so there’s not purple jerseys. The 3D numbers are still dumb but aligned with the Giant blue it doesn’t rake the eyes like I’d expect it to. The B on the hips seems unnecessary but it’s covering up purple so no harm done.

NFL Week 3 Bold Predictions

Hey there! It’s me again with Mexican spicy-style NFL week 3 predictions. It’s been a crazy week for most teams because of injuries and releases. This will definitely have an impact on the week 3 scores. However, someone has to do the dirty job of predicting every single weekend game and, guess what, that’s me. Let’s get started.

Buffalo 21 (-6), Cincinnati 17 Bills have the 2nd best pass defense and 2nd best rush defense. Bengals have 2nd best past offense and the worst rush attack. It seems like we’ll watch a unidimensional game on the Bengals side and it’s probable that Dalton will be intercepted at least once. But, it also means that he will probably have 400+ as in the previous 2 games and at least one TD catch from John Ross III. It might be a close game, especially if Josh Allen gets picked and the Bengals defense emerges. Singletary will have a hell of a game and probably gets more touches than Gore.

Dallas 31 (-21.5), Miami 13 Oh, boy! This is a bad time to be a Dolphins’ fan, even for Felipe. The defense is awful, but the offense is painful. And Mr. Prescott is on fire this season. Gallup is out due to an injury but rookie Smith has already shown he’s ready to take his spot. Put your money in Dallas, no more to say.

Green Bay 17 (-8), Denver 10 This is going to be a defensive game. Packers defense has held opposing play-callers to a poor 58.3 QB rating and has allowed only 19 points in 2 weeks. I mean, Chicago is everything but a good offense and Cousins had the chance to defeat them but made childish mistakes. If Flacco starts the game as he’s finishing them, it could be closer than expected. The key will be the Broncos’ defense. If they can stop Rodgers and Jones, it could be the big surprise of the week. Anyway, the bold prediction could be Broncos winning on the road but I’ll stick to the logic.

Indianapolis 20(-2), Atlanta 19 This is for me the closest game this week, even on top of Bal vs KC. After a disastrous first 2 quarters against the Vikings in week 1, Atlanta has managed to improve their defense and could hold the Eagles in week 2. On the other hand, Brissett has played well enough to not be a factor in the games his team has played. 3RD rush offense vs 3rd overall defense, the game will be decided in the trenches. If Colts can establish the rush game, it would be really difficult for ATL to overcome that. And if Ryan continues with his streak of picks, way more difficult. Colts take it by one.

Kansas City 24 (-6.5), Ravens 21 This is, by far, the best game of the week. Two 2nd year rookies face to face, the best QBs starting this season and two undefeated teams on fire. I would not like to predict a score here because this game has so many implications that it’s almost impossible to come up with an idea of how it would develop. Mahomes vs Ravens’ secondary will be awesome. Jackson will run thru KC’s front and they will try to get the tempo and possession of the game. Two opposite approaches to football will clash this afternoon in Kansas. If the rain appears, it would be a big upset for the Chiefs.

Minnesota 31 (-8), Oakland 17 Derek Carr used to be a great QB but after the injury on his shoulder, he hasn’t been the same. His numbers are poor. He has no weapons. The rush offense is trying to rise and the defense is not dominating. Raiders are a team in the build and playing on the road to the Vikings is not going to be an easy job. Last week, Vikings had the chance to win in Wisconsin but Cousins was so erratic in key moments that they lose because of him. Dalvin Cook is a friking monster running with the ball and he also catches passes. Thielen, Rudolph are a dangerous duo. And they’re playing home. Go Vikings all the way!

New England 31 (-22.5), New York Jets 3 I don’t expect another shoutout this week for the Patriots defense for only one reason: Le’Veon Bell. Jets’ game plan will be: Faulk handing the ball to Bell every single snap. Even if they’re losing by 20. This is going to be enough to make at least one FG. The NE defense record of 3 or fewer points in the last 3 games will continue this week. My concern comes on the offense side for NE. Cannon, Wynn, White, and Develin have been ruled out for this game. The rush game will be definitely affected but the question that arises is if Brady will get enough protection to score over 30 points as in the last 2 weeks. My bold suggestion is that NE will struggle to beat the Jets and will be a closer game than expected but, with so many weapons (Michel, Burkhead, Bolden, Dorsett, Edelman, Gordon) everything is possible, even if Brady doesn’t have enough time in the pocket. NE defense will win this game.

Philadelphia 13 (-7), Detroit 17 Jackson and Jeffrey have been ruled out for this game and Carson Wentz’s weapons are limited. Lions defense made Philip Rivers looked really bad last week and their red zone defense was impenetrable. Even with the Eagles playing home, the undefeated Lions are a very underestimated team that might come up with the road win. It will be a good night for Matthew Stafford and the Lions’ WRs. The Eagle’s defense could leverage the game and if they make Stafford make mistakes, it could be a closer game. Matt Patricia and the Lions will come out victorious from one of the toughest stadiums in the NFL.

Arizona 17, Carolina (-2.5) 10 Cam Newton is out and all the pressure will be on Kyle Allen’s shoulders. With that awful offensive line, I wouldn’t like to be in his shoes. Kyler Murray continues improving and playing home should be good for him, even facing a good defense like Carolina’s. David Johnson will be key in this game and we could probably see another good game for Larry Fitzgerald, the eternal Cardinals’ wr. If Panthers’ defense can keep them close in the score, they might surprise the home team but it’s something that has to be seen.

Tampa Bay 17 (-6.5), New York Giants 10 It will be an interesting match between SaQuon Barkley and the Bucaneers’ defense who held Mccaffrey to a subpar 2.8 yds per carry last week and stopped him in the last play of the game. Daniel Jones will finally have the opportunity to show up he’s the future for the Giants. Won’t be easy because the Tampa Bay’s pass rush is aggressive and he will be pressure the whole game, ask Cam Newton if not! If Winston plays smart and doesn’t throw any pick, things will go well for the Bucs.

Los Angeles Chargers 27 (-3), Houston 26 DeSaun Watson has shown he’s mature enough to lead a comeback late in the 4th quarter but Houston’s defense hasn’t been as good as in previous seasons. Texans should have won the game in NO after a masterpiece of offensive play by Watson and his receivers but, we know that was a whole different story. Chargers are looking to bounce back after a horrible exhibition against the Lions. Rivers had an awful game and Ekeler played well but, with that fumble in the red zone, he sealed the loss for his team. It will be a tight game.

Seattle 24 (-4.5), New Orleans 12 No Brees, no wins. That’s the odds for the Saints. Brees is out for at least 8 weeks and the playoffs chances rest on Teddy Bridgewater’s hands. No easy yask for an average QB. Rush game should be the key but Seahawks’ defense is no joke. Alvin Kamara has to stand up for his team if they want to keep their chances of going to the playoffs. Seattle will run and run and run and run the ball until Wilson comes up with a deep ball for a TD. Seahawks are a dangerous team and they will get the win this week.

San Francisco 23 (-6.5), Pittsburgh 13 Two words for Steelers’s defense: Garoppolo and Breida. 131.2 QB rating for the first and 6.2 yads per carry for the later. Mason Rudolph played well vs Seattle but 49ers’ secondary is way better. Conner has shown he was a one-season wonder and it seems that now he can’t find his rhythm. The only offensive weapons remaining for Pittsburgh are McDonald and JuJu. It’s going to be a long season for the bumblebees.

Cleveland 13, Los Angeles Rams (-3) 23 Sunday Night Football returns to Cleveland. And with primetime comes the last year Super Bowl losers and one of the favorites to win this season: the Rams. Rams are a balanced team: they can run, they can pass, they defend. The Browns are an explosive team but explosive also applies for the locker room. Baker Mayfield can play as a ProBowl or as an inexperienced rookie. Defense is aggressive but Rams can find the way to take away the pressure to Goff. I don’t expect a close game, the Rams will control the clock, the ball and the score.

Washington 13, Chicago 10 (-4) Two poor offenses head to head in Washington. A good QB vs an overrated QB. One of the best defenses of the league vs the worst secondary. Who will win? As I have told to my Bears’ fans friends when Chicago plays I bet under and against them. Last week vs Denver, they should have lost; officiating and a good kick helped them out. I don’t see Trubitski throwing a 50+ yds touchdown as Wentz and Prescott did, but I do see Montgomery having a hell of a game. This time, Redskins won’t lose the early lead and will win by a minimum margin.

Start: Marquise Goodwin, Brandin Cooks in DFS

Goodwin finally looked healthy last week for the first time this season, impressing while ripping off 126 yards and two scores. He saw the 11th most Air Yards on just five targets and should be more involved now that he’s healthy and with San Francisco having to throw frequently as near double-digit underdogs Sunday. C.J. Beathard looks competent in Kyle Shanahan’s system, and the Rams’ secondary has proven plenty beatable this season. Fire up Goodwin with confidence this week.

The Rams will be without Cooper Kupp, the 49ers are much better against the run than pass, and both teams run a fast pace, so this is a good week to pay up for Cooks in DFS. He’s on pace to record 1,347 receiving yards despite not seeing double-digit targets in a game this season.

Start: Josh Gordon in DFS, Taylor Gabriel

Gordon led the Patriots in targets last week and continues to see a big increase in route run percentage with New England. The Bears shut down the run but have ceded the fifth-most fantasy points to wide receivers, so I have Gordon as a top-20 WR this week.

Allen Robinson is banged up and would be shadowed by Stephon Gilmore if he suits up anyway. This leaves Gabriel to soak up targets in a game when Chicago figures to pass more than usual. Over the last two weeks, Gabriel has secured 12-of-12 targets for 214 yards and two scores. Anthony Miller is also a sleeper if Robinson sits, as New England has been vulnerable to the slot this season (sixth-most fantasy points allowed).

Start: Devin Funchess, Corey Clement

Funchess saw eight targets despite Greg Olsen’s return last week, and the Eagles have yielded the second-most fantasy points to his primary side this season.

Clement outgained Wendell Smallwood by 18 yards (and scored) on five fewer touches at less than full strength last week. He’s now had 10 days to get closer to 100 percent. Clement isn’t a workhorse, but Philadelphia’s offense is improving along with Carson Wentz’s health and with Jay Ajayi on IR, he has top-15 RB upside down the stretch.

Tennessee Titans vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Start: Mike Williams

Sit: Marcus Mariota

Williams has disappeared over the last three games, but he’s likely to be matched up with the struggling Malcolm Butler this week. The Titans have allowed the most fantasy points to WRs on his primary side.

Mariota has a 5:14 TD:INT over his last 10 games away from home since the start of last season, and the Chargers’ defense is playing better lately (allowing just 27 points over their last 11 quarters).

Cleveland Browns vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Start: Jarvis Landry in DFS, O.J. Howard

Landry has struggled to find a connection with Baker Mayfield (just 3.8 yards per target) but the volume has been there. The Bucs present the perfect combination a potent offense (with a fast pace) and the league’s worst defense (which might now be missing Gerald McCoy) that’s been burned for the most fantasy points against the slot this season. Damion Ratley and Antonio Callaway (12th in Air Yards!) are good fliers in deep leagues this week, as well, with Rashard Higgins sidelined.

Howard looked good in his return last week, and Cleveland’s coverage is weakest at safety and linebacker. He should be treated as a clear TE1 moving forward.

Detroit Lions vs. Miami Dolphins

Start: Kerryon Johnson, Kenyan Drake

Both teams’ strengths are their secondaries (whereas both defenses are bottom-five in fantasy points allowed to RBs), so expect this game to feature plenty of rushing attempts. Johnson, who ranks fifth in “true yards per carry,” should see more work (as we’ve been waiting for) with Theo Riddick possibly out, while Drake still has more upside than Frank Gore (who’s another option in this matchup).

Buffalo Bills vs. Indianapolis Colts

Start: Marlon Mack

Sit: LeSean McCoy

It’s tough to rely on any Indy back, but Mack impressed during his return last week and he’s going to be given an opportunity to take the lead in a home matchup as more than touchdown favorites. Buffalo’s secondary is its team strength, so the Colts should focus on their ground game and defense facing Derek Anderson, who was just signed last week. It also helps that the Colts are running the fastest pace in football.

McCoy will get volume, but the Bills are 7.5-point road underdogs starting their third-stringer at quarterback, and Indy sports the No. 8 ranked run defense DVOA.

Minnesota Vikings vs. New York Jets

Start: Adam Thielen in DFS, Jermaine Kearse

What Thielen is doing to start the season is nothing short of amazing, and Scott Pianowski has him atop his wide receiver rankings (along with AB) for the rest of season. No argument here, and Thielen gets an extremely inviting matchup this week against a Jets secondary getting destroyed by the slot this season. Pay up for him in DFS.

The slot is also where the Vikings have been most vulnerable (fifth-most fantasy points allowed), where Kearse will be running most of his routes in Week 7 with Quincy Enunwa out.

Houston Texans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Start: T.J. Yeldon in DFS

Sit: Will Fuller

With byes (and tough matchups), there are fewer strong RB starts than usual this week, and Yeldon should be looking at 20+ touches after returning to practice Thursday. I like the Jags to roll in this spot.

Fuller is still battling his hamstring issue and Jacksonville’s secondary is the toughest in the league on the outside. Look for Houston to attack underneath with Keke Coutee like Dallas did with Cole Beasley last week.

New Orleans Saints vs. Baltimore Ravens

Start: John Brown in DFS

Sit: Michael Thomas in DFS

Brown is coming off a couple of quiet games, but he ranks third in the NFL in Air Yards (sandwiched between DeAndre Hopkins and Tyreek Hill) and gets a Saints defense that’s allowed the most fantasy points to wide receivers this season. Baltimore already runs a fast pace and should pass even more this week in a rare Ravens game with an over/under approaching 50 points.

Thomas gets a near-opposite matchup as Baltimore has ceded the second-fewest fantasy points to wideouts and an NFL-low 6.0 YPA this season. Thomas should return to double-digit targets after seeing just nine total over the last two weeks, but his matchup makes it tough to pay his DFS price ($35).

Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Redskins

Sit: Alex Smith, Cole Beasley

Smith has gotten just 7.0 YPA during a season in which passing stats have exploded, and Washington’s receivers remain banged up (Paul Richardson is iffy for Week 7 and Jamison Crowder has already been ruled out). Moreover, Washington’s pace is one of the slowest in the league and Dallas has held quarterbacks to the eighth-fewest fantasy points. Last year’s version of Smith feels like ages ago.

Beasley is coming off a big game in which he recorded 100+ yards and scored twice, but he was the focal point of Dallas’ offense thanks to Jacksonville’s main vulnerability being the slot; a position Washington has shut down this season.

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Start: C.J. Uzomah, Kareem Hunt in DFS

Uzomah saw seven targets last week as he’s slowly replacing Tyler Eifert as Cincinnati’s starting tight end. Kansas City has been gashed for the second-most fantasy points by the position this season.

Hunt saw a season-high six targets last week, and the Bengals bring in the No. 25 ranked run defense DVOA. Sunday’s flexed game has a high total (58.5 points), and Hunt has already scored six touchdowns this year despite playing only two home games. He’s well worth paying up for ($31) in a week with so few top RB options.

New York Giants vs. Atlanta Falcons

Start: Eli Manning, Austin Hooper

Manning has actually played well away from home this season (8.3 YPA, averaging 300.7 passing yards over three games), and he faces an Atlanta defense that owns the 31st ranked DVOA, has allowed the third-most fantasy points to quarterbacks, and most importantly, struggles to pressure the QB. Evan Engram is also back to practicing fully, so Manning has a strong complement of weapons to throw to in the projected shootout.

With Calvin Ridley and Mohamed Sanu both banged up, Hooper should continue to see big targets (he’s suddenly seen 22 over the last two weeks after totaling 15 over first four contests) from a QB who’s gotten 9.9 YPA with a 15:1 TD:turnover ratio at home this season.
