old Obi-Wan is so funny to me because his sass and overall bitchiness is like the last thing he's got and I'm so proud it survived the great depression of his 40s.

The building embodies his profound understanding of nature, art, and spirituality.
Built between 1963 and 1967, these structures reflect Nakashima’s highest aspirations as a woodworker, architect, and artist.

I think i cracked it, the reason everything produced in the times of the High Republic is soo good compared to modern Star Wars, tldr its because of pain.
See, in all the works that date during the High Republic (specifically during George's ownership of SW) there's this fearlessness to show pain and tragedy and death, and i know it sounds like "everything for the children these days is sanitized!" but think for a second if Revenge of the Sith would be something Disney would publish these days and that's your answer, but that's just a tangent meant to emphasize the difference between Og SW and new SW, because what Og SW had was strife, and you the viewer knew that, because every time you booted up KOTOR or played Phantom Menace you knew what was coming, you knew to expect the isle of happiness in which the characters lived to slowly sink beneath the waves of tragedy and you'll see it happen as the characters around the story just dug up their own fates, in very much George Lucas fashion, and THAT is what made the work and the small moments of levity to taste so much sweeter, because you see the characters who you've grown attached to suffer so un-justly that when you return to the good times you can't help but appreciate the good and mourn it's departure.
The reason new SW does not achieve this is because the characters are dealing with the aftermath of the destruction of the baddies, its the birth of the hope for the future, its when you look at the horizon at the END of the movie, yes new problems may arise but the big hurdle is done and Disney didn't cultivate the joy from the Alliance's victory as it should, because instead of giving us proper post-war optimism (as it fits the real life post WW2 countries counterparts and fantasy sci-fi proper) it stuck only with the brooding post-war trauma, and while yes, that is also a very realistic take it still lacked verily from the former and thus there is no reason why we should mourn a character's strife if that is all we've seen from them, its like watching paint dry, nothing particularly changes, just a new villain here and there, the new character discovers new powers, new info, but there is no resolution, no reward for their strife, and even if they were going for a bleak post-war future (which they didn't and it also doesn't fit SW's constant theme of hope for a better future) it still ends up looking incomplete for the mere reason that they don't want to shut the book in case they need to milk the cow some more.
My point with all this was not to bash new SW though, my point was to use it as a comparison to highlight how Og SW built itself on a foundation of hope, how it showed us the height before the fall, how it is possible to make Shakespeare in space and leave all of us with broken hearts and looking hopefully into the future.

so i was reading fanfic, as one do and it contained a scene that made me do this post. it was omega thinking the worst about kenobi for not joining rebel efforts, not pulling through the dangers and trauma like the rest of them, even tho due to new canon he was very well aware about it and even left tatooine for a bit. and while i agree it would be very interesting to see and might make sense for characters to feel angry about him not doing it, i think we as readers and authors alike need to understand few things that cumulate into this.
1. star wars canon was not made in chronological order. while it's not too hard to retcon some things (like mauls death) because they were made as later addition, we don't have the same space to do it when it comes to kenobi. new hope established him as character on the end of the journey with on screen death that can't be retconed without fucking up everything about later added character lore (let's not touch whatever ezra bridger has going on rn). we have clearly established hermit and his end of the journey.
2. kenobi's reasons for staying isolated might feel nonsensical but it makes sense for his characterization. he feels guilty and responsible for skywalker's failures and feels need to repent. true, he could do that trying to fix what's going on with rebellion and that could be powerful point, but as mentioned in point 1 - we have established character and his death.
3. we can't expect everyone to react to guilt and trauma the same way, even fictional characters. while i bemoan the waste of opportunities (i love him) i actually think it makes the story more realistic and complex. some people will power through their issues, focusing on the rebellion, trying to fight. others tho? will withdraw and wallow and make other decisions. nothing in word is cookie cut. the idea of high general loosing all will to fight and drowning in guilt and whatifs makes very good plot point that could be explored to contrast the attempts of rebellion to fight and win. does it make him bad person? does it make his decisions bad? plenty of space to elaborate.
4. while fanfiction is well, work of fan fiction, based on original sources but not required to adhere to the rules of the original - in my opinion it's way better made when the rules of the original piece are understood and broken deliberately to explore the possibilities not provided by canon. by setting up the very black and white understanding of character reasoning we limit ourselves and the work appears with less depth to the story. nothing is truly black and white in life and art imitates life. if you can't get ahold of the idea of grey areas think about yin yang.
5. actually you know what, scratch everything. have fun with your fanfic. what i said is my opinion based on my understanding so it's alright if you disagree. tho i feel like the discussion is important to have around it. fiction is a safe way to explore certain topics
i just have too many deep thoughts about silly time travel fix it fic.
