She's not ...entirely sure this is a good idea.
Even as she raises her hand to knock she's second guessing herself.
The thing is - the thing is there aren't a lot of people in her life who don't take one look at her and make assumptions. She's petite, she's blonde, her face is eerily symmetrical.
When people see her, they think they know her.
Cap is great. The sort of man she wishes she'd known more of, growing up. The kind of man who stood in front of the entire crew and doled out cleaning duties and cooking duties to his men and didn't blink an eye handing her inventory, but pulled aside a guy six years into the job to inform him that if he made a snide comment about having to do Mona's job again he'd be looking for a new station. Respectfully.
The kind of man who let his crew cut loose and created a kind of family behind those bay doors, but didn't take their shit when they got out of hand
The kind of man who looked at her and just saw another firefighter.
Cap is great.
It's just...
Well, the guys don't go to Cap for advice, and she knows once upon a time that kind of hurt his feelings, but this feels like one of those things his husband is better equipped to handle.
("It's because he's older, right?" Cap had asked once, failing miserably at holding in a pout while the team around him demolished the roast he'd obviously spent hours prepping the night before.
Fred had still had half a loaf of bread in his mouth when he explained that talking to their boss about their sex lives just felt like an HR nightmare.
"So you go to my boyfriend instead?")
Mona's still considering turning heel and leaving the way she came when she hears whistling around the side of the house, and before she can make a break for it, Cap's husband is rounding the corner of the porch, winding his hands in a grease rag, and he's catching sight of her, raising a brow, slowing his steps.
He must see the panicked look in her eye.
"I can turn back around and pretend you were never here," he murmurs, the slightest hint of a smile on his face, and Mona feels every ounce of flight just seep from her bones.
Yeah. Okay. She gets why the guys all think he's the one to go to when they've royally fucked something up.
There's an ease to him, a gentleness that she knows for a fact was hard fought.
"No, I..."
The brow ticks up a little more.
"I just found a new sour Evan won't touch with a ten foot pole, if you're gonna be here a minute," Tommy says, and any resistance left vanishes. Mona's been to enough of Cap's barbecues to know his husband always has the best beer in the county.
"Yeah, okay."
Tommy crosses the length of the porch and glances glumly at his greasy hands. "You mind grabbing the door? Evan throws a fit every time I leave fingerprints behind."
She's interrupting his day, she realizes. He's a weird sort of semi-retired - flies for the county sometimes during wildfire season, flips classic cars from their huge ass garage around the side of the house, spends a month teaching courses to new pilots every year out of state and it's always the crankiest they ever get to see Cap. People charter his chopper, sometimes, although lately it seems like he only keeps the thing around so he can take Cap up to watch spectacular sunsets because they're the most sickeningly perfect couple she's ever met.
Mona grabs the door. Shuffles in ahead of him when he shows no signs of moving, and makes her way down the hall to the kitchen because she's been here enough times by now not to feel as weird about how welcoming they both were right away.
He uses his rag to pull open the sink cabinet and grab the heavy duty soap from underneath to wash his hands.
The scent rolls over her in waves, throwing her back about fifteen years to her parents tiny little apartment over the shop, her father's rough and callused hands soaking under shitty water pressure, the grease under his fingernails he could never quite scrape clean.
Tommy tips a chin at the fridge. "Grab me one, too? Bottle openers on the side."
There's an ease to the way he says it, like this is a normal occurrence, like Mona's ever stepped foot across the threshold for anything that wasn't a station-wide get together. She supposes for him it probably is. At least a few of the guys act like he's their dad, wandering into the house without even bothering to knock, gathering around him when he shows up at the station like lost little puppies.
He's used to it.
He hums his thank you when she sets one of the bottles on the island beside him, and Mona glances around to distract herself while he's drying his hands.
A couple dozen pictures of Cap and Tommy, in various stages of their lives.
The fridge is plastered with pictures. A couple she recognizes as Cap's sister and brother-in-law, two adorable kids at their knees. A guy standing next to a kid wearing a cap and gown and leaning on two crutches. An older man she's lovingly heard Cap refer to as basically his dad - the reason they eat better at work than anyone has the right to. A couple she'd seen at the wedding, standing with a kid she remembers Cap staring at like he was seeing a ghost. There's so many people that she doesn't know, but - there's the station pictures too. Candids of the boys when they were living in the Captain's house, back when Cap first got here, when she'd still been a year and a half from graduating high school and didn't have a fucking clue what she wanted to do with her life. The Christmas that Fred had cursed them with the q-word and Tommy had spent the day in the station kitchen putting together a meal they'd all stuck around to eat after shift despite the exhaustion seeping into their bones, all of A shift crammed together around a tiny wobbly table to squeeze into the picture.
She gets stuck on the picture of the two of them in hard hats, building what she's pretty sure is the wrap around porch she's snuck a few cigarettes on when the house gets a little overwhelming. There's something about the way they're looking at each other that makes her want to cry, a little.
Fuck.
Damnit.
Tommy leans over to tap the picture with a grin. "We had a blowout fight the night before our buddy took this picture," he says, the deep grooves of his smile stretched wide across his face. "I'd left my job and sold my house six months earlier to chase him across the country and he was convinced if he didn't find a way to turn every half-thought-out desire of mine into a reality that I was gonna vanish in the night. He bought the lumber without telling me and I came home to him and his best friend ripping out the stairs to the front door."
Mona's instantly drawn in.
He makes them sound like a train wreck.
If she's got the math right, that was her senior year. She remembers seeing them around town and thinking they were annoyingly sweet. She remembers her mom baking Tommy a casserole for the excuse of getting all the gossip about the Captain's mysterious paramour so she had the upper hand at her book club that weekend.
Tommy taps another. The two of them under a pergola, the expressions on their faces so disgustingly smitten Mona remembers wanting to blow a raspberry in the middle of the ceremony. She'd been so convinced she'd never let herself be so fucking dependent on another person for her happiness.
"He kept it a secret that he'd invited my father to the wedding until the night before. I spent most of my night with a punching bag instead of Evan." He points out another photo from the wedding. "The photographer tried to murder me when she saw my knuckles. Evan could barely fit the ring over my finger."
"Who snitched?" Mona asks, narrowing her eyes, and Tommy grins, huffs a laugh. He gestures vaguely at her face.
"You've got the look," he tells her, which doesn't really explain a whole lot. "And none of Evan's crew ever makes their first visit anything but love life issues."
"It could be something else," Mona argues, gesturing with her beer, and one of his brows ticks up. "It's not, but it could be."
"You want something to eat? Evan's been experimenting with cakes again, and the red velvet white chocolate escaped the discards."
"Is my so called look that bad?"
He grins. "Mostly I'm looking for an excuse for cake before noon."
Christ, he's good at this. It's actually a little eerie, how quickly he's set her at ease. It's been over a year and the guys still call her prickly when they think she can't hear them, but she never calls them out on it because they're not wrong. It takes her forever to warm up to people.
"Is that how this usually works? You butter us up with Cap's food and get us to spill our guts?"
He's already digging plates from a cabinet next to the stove. She can't see his expression, but she can picture the grin on his face. "Usually they raid my fridge and put their feet up on my coffee table before I've fully registered that they're here. It's sort of a novelty to get to act like a host in my own home."
That checks out, if she's being honest. They're all a bunch of rabid animals who've been emboldened by Cap's open door policy and his infectious smile and his incredibly hot and talented husband. She's never quite sure if the guys want to be him or screw him - not that Tommy's ever looked twice at anyone who wasn't Cap.
"I think I'm broken," Mona admits, the words coming out in a rush, her eyes on the dutch oven tucked under one of the wide kitchen windows.
Tommy slides a slice of fucking delicious looking cake her way and takes a swig of his beer. Waits.
Mona reaches for the fork and spills her guts.
---
"Oh, hey Mo," Cap says, stumbling his way over the threshold, eyes lighting on his husband and his expression going gooey.
Tommy broke into the rack of Banquet's an hour ago and Mona's pretty sure she's one with the couch. It's a good couch. When she'd told Tommy so twenty minutes ago there'd been a gleam in his eye she didn't understand.
She's still a little too buzzed to worry about the fact that she's oozing into the cushions and emotionally wrecked. She hasn't cried in front of another human being in at least six years. Tommy's probably a wizard, or something.
"Everything good?" Cap asks, and she knows that they've got a sort of agreement - unless Tommy thinks something is gonna affect the work, whatever Tommy talks about with them doesn't reach Cap's ears.
"Men," Mona huffs, and Cap pauses, shoots another look into the living room.
"Yeah. Men."
"No Cap. Men," she repeats, and he nods, a corner of his mouth quirking up.
"Oh. Men," he enunciates, and Mona feels the scowl on her face grow wider when the two of them share a sappy look. It's super fucking inconvenient to be surrounded by the proof of true fucking love when she's trying to convince herself she's already too jaded to find it. "If you wanna stay for dinner I can tell you the story of the time Tommy tried to leave me because he thought he could make my decisions for me."
Even Tommy's scowl is sappy as hell. It's gross. Shes having a hard time convincing herself it's not the best thing she's ever seen.
She tips her neck against the back of the couch to glance up at him. "Who snitched?"
Cap's laugh filters through the room, and right across from her, where the whole world and Mona can see, Tommy's expression goes warm and vulnerable, like the sound has soothed a few decades of wounds. "Word of advice? Never leave Harry with a secret and a crowded room."

Bob George in the ARC NYC stacks. Photograph: unknown/ARC NYC ...
âNo one else is saving itâ: the fight to protect a historic music collection ...
It all started in a loft in Tribeca, New York, long before it was a trendy neighbourhood. âI had 47,000 records and nobody wanted them,â recalls Bob George, who had just published a discography of punk and new wave music. âThat led a lot of people coming to me and saying you have to save this stuff; no one else is saving it. That got the ball rolling in my loft in what is now fashionable Tribeca, which was an incredibly unfashionable war zone in 1974 when I was first there.â
George turned his record collection into the ARChive of Contemporary Music (Arc) in 1985 with co-founder David Wheeler. The non-profit music library and research centre now contains more than 3m sound recordings or over 90m songs, making it one of the biggest popular music collections in the world. Donors and board members have included David Bowie, Jonathan Demme, Lou Reed, Martin Scorsese and Paul Simon.
The Arc is not open to the public but has been a vital resource for film-makers, writers and researchers ranging from Ken Burns looking for a song for his series Baseball to the new Grammy Hall of Fame and Museum in Los Angeles needing cover art for its inducted recordings. Now, however, this unique treasure trove is under existential threat.
The Arc cannot remain at its current Hudson Valley premises indefinitely and is in need of a new and bigger home. âWe have to move and we donât know when weâll have to move and the collection is really at risk because itâs all on pallets,â says George, who dreams of a patron like James Smithson, the British scientist who left his estate to the US to found the Smithsonian Institution. âWeâre looking for someone to help us buy a very wonderful property or for us to build a new building on vacant land in upstate New York.â
After growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, George moved to New York in 1974 as a visual arts student and started collecting records as a DJ. In 1981 he released Laurie Andersonâs first single, O Superman, which sold nearly a million copies worldwide and made it to number on the UK singles chart. He was a guest on John Peelâs beloved BBC radio show, sneaking in little-known records from New York, and took music to European broadcasters too. People kept giving him records that other collections turned down.
Some of the 18,000 recordings in the Keith Richards Blues Collection. Photograph: Arc NYC
âI was doing the book and then doing Peel shows and it accidentally became this large collection that nobody wanted. They kept saying, oh, we collect classical, we collect Broadway, we collect ethnic music. I said, well, I have funk, reggae, African and hip-hop and they said, oh, no, we donât collect any of that. Forty years later, I say, you put all those together and thatâs what music has become.â
The simple goal of the archive, which has always had a peripatetic existence, is preservation. âWe have no interest in quality,â George cheerfully admits. âIt started that way from the very beginning because thereâs no way to tell whatâs valuable in the future. Everybody brings their own criteria and tastes to things in their own time. But the future is quite different, as we hope.â
The archive has never received aid from any city, state or federal organisation but its scale gives the Library of Congress a run for its money. It has absorbed major collections from musicians and fans and is home to most of Rolling Stone Keith Richardsâ extensive blues inventory.
George dispatched two semi-trailers to a condemned house in Boston sinking under the weight of Jeep Hollandâs set of more than 125,000 recordings and over 2,500 signed albums from the likes of the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and the Sex Pistols. âGoing towards the bathroom, he has a gas stove, the pilot light is on, there are records in the oven. It was just a storage space ... His car had become so full of records that he abandoned it and rented a car.â
George has made repeat trips to countries such as Brazil, Cambodia, Colombia, Cuba, Japan, Jordan, Laos and Thailand. The Arc contains Demmeâs personal collection of Haitian albums. More than 150,000 pieces of world music have been catalogued; there are plenty more to do. âWeâve tried to get as much of that material as possible so that collection is just fabulous.â
The Arc preserves copies of every recording in all known formats. It has electronically catalogued more than 400,000 sound recordings and digitised 200,000 with the Internet Archive â more than any other public university or private library in America. It also contains more than 3m pieces of material including photos, videos, DVDs, books, magazines, press kits, sheet music, ephemera and memorabilia.
The late Andy Rourke of the Smiths at Arc looking at Smiths records he had never seen. Photograph: Arc NYC
George says: âWe catalogued 105,000 singles just recently; we have another 200,000 or 300,000 to go. This is the first way a band at one time got their feet in the water. They put out one or two or three singles. If they did hits, they got the chance to do an album and so much of this material does not exist on LP or CD. Little by little more of it might be streaming because of YouTube, as people can get away with murder on YouTube, which is great, but YouTube will disappear. Everything commercial will disappear.â
Among those who have turned to the archive is the Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, who wanted records by the singer Bert Sommer for his film Taking Woodstock. âThe archive is amazing because we donât know what we have until somebody needs it. Weâve been into the stacks and we found five LPs by Bert Sommer. For me, itâs like I have no idea who this guy is and what he did; heâs sort of a folkie. For Quincy Jones, we just sent him a list of the 8,000 things that heâs either produced or on.
âResearch was how we basically stayed alive along with the largesse of the rock stars or celebrities that we had hooked up with. The idea was never to open to the public but thatâs what we want to do now. I donât think itâs untrue that weâre one of the largest in the world and that we want to make that available. Weâve tried to save two copies so there will always be a listening copy and then that would then become a listening library.â
George hopes the new archive will be open to students, educators, historians, musicians, authors, journalists and the general public. An anonymous donor has come forward with a million dollars to help realise that dream but more money is urgently needed. One possible new home is an abandoned IBM campus spanning 34 acres, although that would cost $8-10m. George is considering partnering with an upstate university and has plans to offer residencies for scholars.
âPeople could come in and produce a work, and that would go out into the world. It could be a blog, essay, tape, compilation, new recording, whatever. Weâre really quite un-academic. Iâm against it somewhat and Iâd like people to have ideas and bring those ideas and put them back into the world as opposed to making it an interactive experience for everybody. I donât want to be Disney World. Itâs nice to have seminars. Itâs nice to have listening parties. Itâs nice to have dances.â

House With Nearly 300 Classic Cars on 18 Acres Is One Rough Diamond For $400K! Everything Uouâve Wished For, OR Your Worst Nightmare?
â By James Gilboy | January 30, 2024
Via Zillow
Owning a Home, a Garage, a Bunch of Land for Hooning on, and More Classic Cars than you can count is all our common dream. Well, if you can get a mortgage for the $400,000 property listed on Zillow right now, that dream can be your reality. But like every dream, this one's gonna take work to realize, because boy is this place an unpolished gem.
Currently for sale in Canaan, New Hampshire near the Vermont border, this property is aimed directly at all of us. "ARE YOU A CAR ENTHUSIAST?" opens the ad, which is for the grounds of a defunct classic car boneyard called Parts of the Past. The 18-acre site is littered with close to 300 classics in varying conditions, some of them seemingly in good shape. Others... You'd better be up to date on your tetanus shots.
Parts of the Past Grounds. Zillow
From what few photos of the cars there are, it looks like the majority are pre-1970 and mainly if not all American makes. I spy some old Chryslers, a DeSoto, and a Nash Metropolitan, but most are too distant to be instantly recognizable. A pile of doors suggests many may have been picked for parts already, so there's no telling how complete most of the cars are. Some may just be decaying shells, while others could be what auctioneers like to call "restoration opportunities."
Going by the surprising bounty at the overgrown former AMC dealer in North Carolina, more of them may be in good shape than we think. But even taking inventory of the cars on the lot and their condition would be a months-long process if it's not your full-time job. Whether you want to part them out to maximize your return on investment or liquidate it all, you've got a Sisyphean task ahead of you.
House on the Grounds of Parts of the Past. Zillow
Even if you want to use the onsite garage to restore some, and enjoy the forested land for all it's worth, you're still gonna have to figure out what to do with the house. It's a one-bedroom, three-bathroom home that's sold as a "post and beam"-style affair. That may be overselling what looks like an incomplete major renovation, with exposed studs in almost every room and an almost totally unfinished bathroom. I've lived in a place like this, and it sucks even more than those Modern Farmhouse-style places your least interesting neighbor lives in.
Between the house and collection of unknown cars, it's hard to say whether this place is really worth $400,000. Is it more than the sum of its parts, or does it even add up to that in the first place? That's for people who get boots on the ground to decide. Me, I'd sooner take one running car and a livable house, but to each their own.

"ADDICTIVE LOVE IS...." (notes found in a drawer)
by Ethlie Ann Vare
I was Swedish Death Cleaning my file cabinets the other day and came across a page I had written in 2003. An actual page, printed on actual paper, like we did in 2003. It might have been a pitch document for a script or a book. It might have been an inventory I was going to share with a sponsor. It might have been a journal entry, but I doubt that because I am hopeless at journaling, much to my chagrin.Â
Whatever it was, I share it with you now because it feels real and raw and you just might relate.Â
ADDICTIVE LOVE ISâŚ
âŚcurling up on the couch in fetal position, nauseous, because he didnât call.
âŚa red haze misting over your eyeballs and the top of your head about to explode because he walks into the room.
âŚyour heart lurching into your throat because you see a car the same make and model as his.
âŚlooking at every girl in the room and imagining that heâs with her.
âŚgetting an overwhelming feeling of calm simply imagining the hug, the kiss, the kind word.
âŚrehearsing phone conversations that never happened, letters never sent, over and over until perfect.
âŚre-reading emails until theyâre memorized.
âŚtears welling up for no good reason.
Nothing tastes good - nothing tastes at all - except sugary sweets and salty snacks.
You canât fall asleep, then canât stay asleep... you wake up at 3am but donât get out of bed until 9.
The bribes and the bait. Taking back the bribes and the bait.Â
The grief comes in waves.
These are men I have felt exactly this way about:
Ted, who was tall and dark and a diplomatâs sonÂ
Martin, who was short and grey and made cartoons
John, who was chubby and a rocket scientistÂ
Pat, who was blonde and insane and wanted to act
Chuck, who was smart and sophisticated and a junkie
Bill, who was rangy and rich and an adventurerÂ
Lonnie, who had black curls and lived in a group home
Pete, who played the guitar and was married to someone else
There was David from high school and Charles from college and a few Stevens and a Michael or three⌠I felt exactly the same way about each of them and they had nothing in common other than that feeling. That, and that I knew they wouldnât stay.
The terror sets in waiting for them to leave. Knowing from the very beginning that this is someone who will leave, because otherwise it doesnât work. Once, I reveled in that exquisite torture. Called it that aloud: âexquisite torture.â So numb, I suppose, that feeling anything was better than feeling nothing. This, at least, was intense enough for me to feel, like curry on a cold. But now itâs just torture. Itâs quivering, all-consuming fear. Maybe not all-consuming. Like the grief, the fear comes in waves.
The writing trails off there. I imagine I was too unhappy to continue. Itâs funny looking back now on the list of men â tall, short, thick, thin, fair, dark, smart, dumb, young, old, rich, poor â and I realize I never had a type in the classic sense. My type was âunavailable.â No wonder I was sad.Â
Well, it did all become a book in the end, which I suppose is the good news. And if you relate to those feeling, I commend you to it. It might help. Because the better news is this: I donât feel like that any more. Ever. I mean, never say never but I think I donât ever have to feel that way again. Because wanting to leave is no longer an attractive feature on a man, and I no longer find exquisite torture exquisite. Change happens.

A Comprehensive Guide to Buying Used Engines and Transmissions: What You Need to Know
If you are an automobile enthusiast, a mechanic, or someone trying to save money on an auto repair, buying used engines and transmissions is the way to go. Whether restoring a vintage car, fixing a vehicle with a blown engine, or replacing a worn-out transmission, purchasing used parts can save you both time and money. In this blog, we'll dive into the benefits, considerations, and tips for buying used engines and used transmissions.
Why Buy Used Engines and Transmissions? Before we get into the meat of it, though, it's worth knowing why buying used engines and used transmissions is an option worth considering. There are a lot of good reasons to buy used instead of brand-new, including:
Cost-cutting: It is one of the most important motivations for their use; used engines and transmissions are a cost-effective option since fresh ones often run in thousands of dollars, but used ones can be bought at a few hundred dollars.
Availability: In some cases, new versions of a particular engine or transmission model may be hard to come by. If you are restoring a classic car or need an out-of-production part, the used market is often the best (and sometimes the only) option.
Sustainability: Used auto parts purchase helps reduce waste and promotes the recycling of components that still have life left in them. This can have a positive environmental impact, especially as fewer parts end up in landfills.
Quick Fix: If your car is down and you need a quick fix, a used engine or transmission may be just the ticket. New parts can take longer to ship in, while used parts may be locally available or from salvage yards.
Where to Find Used Engines and Transmissions There are many sites where you will find used engines and used transmissions. Each has different advantages and drawbacks, so find out what exactly you need from them.
Salvage Yards: Some of the best places to get used engines and transmissions are auto salvage yards or junkyards. Salvage yards purchase vehicles that are written off by insurance companies or owners who don't need them anymore. In some yards, you might get a low-mileage engine or transmission at a reasonable price depending on their inventory.
Online Marketplaces: There is eBay, Craigslist, and online specialized websites from where people can buy used engines and used transmissions. These are really convenient, often you can get filters by exact make, model, and even year to search for the part required. However, buying from a marketplace can also be tricky to ascertain the actuality and genuineness and condition of that part.
Auto Parts Dealers: Some auto parts dealers specialize in used or refurbished parts, including used engines and used transmissions. Such companies may provide warranties, which would give assurance to the customer while purchasing used parts.
Mechanics and Auto Shops: A few mechanics and auto repair shops might sell some of their engines and transmissions since they've probably replaced one for a customer's vehicle, and the old one is still good enough.
Things to Watch Out For in Buying Used Engines or Transmissions Before you buy used engines or used transaxles, here are things to check.
Mileage is one of the major factors involved in determining its lifespan. It is known that lower-mileage engines and transmissions will be in much better condition. However, avoid low odometer readings as just a determining factor; a high-mileage well-maintained engine might just be a good choice over the poorly maintained, low-mileage one.
Condition and Warranty: Inspect the condition of the engine or transmission before purchasing. Check for any signs of wear and tear such as rust, oil leaks, or anything obvious. A warranty will sometimes be provided by sellers to cover the additional costs.
Compatibility: Ensure that the used engine or transmission youâre buying is compatible with your vehicle. This includes verifying the make, model, year, and engine/transmission type. Using an incorrect part could lead to expensive and time-consuming modifications.
Inspection: If possible, have the part inspected by a professional mechanic. A mechanic can provide a thorough evaluation of the engine or transmissionâs condition and flag any potential issues that might not be immediately apparent.
Seller Reputation: Be it from a local salvage yard, online marketplace, or a dealership, one must always look for the reputation of the seller. One must see reviews or testimonials from other customers that will give them assurance of getting quality parts and excellent customer service.
Price Comparison: Prices for used engines and transmissions can vary widely depending on the partâs condition, mileage, and rarity. Before making a purchase, compare prices from different sellers to ensure youâre getting a fair deal.
Shipping and Delivery: If youâre buying used parts online, consider the shipping costs and delivery time. Shipping can sometimes be expensive, especially for large items like engines and transmissions, and youâll want to make sure the part arrives on time and in good condition.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Buying Used Parts There is a plus side and minus side to buying second-hand engines, transmissions, or the like. As with any acquisition, there's no such thing as a free lunch. Here's a summary of the most critical advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages Cost: Used parts could be one or two percent or less of a new part that you could replace it with for repairs or restore a vehicle project. Eco-Friendly: You reduce wastage by having older components second-hand. Quick Availability: Used parts are usually easy to find and can be found quickly, thus making the repairs faster and more efficient. Quality: Some used engines and transmissions are in excellent condition and offer the same performance as new parts. Disadvantages No Warranty (in many cases): Most used parts, particularly those bought from salvage yards or private sellers, will not come with a warranty. No warranty means the owner will have to incur all expenses when the part fails. Unknown History: You can never really know the history of a used engine or transmission. A part may look fine, but later down the line, you'll discover some problems that existed and are now more visible. Likelihood of a Shorter Life Span: Even though used parts are in great condition, they will not be as long-lasting as brand-new ones. You'll probably have to replace a used part before you do with a new one. Compatibility Issues: Thereâs a risk of buying a used engine or transmission that doesnât perfectly match your vehicleâs specifications, leading to potential fitment issues.
Tips for a Successful Purchase To maximize your chances of getting a quality used engine or used transmission, consider the following tips:
Ask for a test drive: It is always prudent to take out the vehicle, which the engine or transmission is derived from, to test the car. This is to get the performance of the part before taking it.
Maintenance records: Seek the maintenance record of the vehicle if possible from the seller. This gives a clue about the care given to the part.
Check for Recalls: Some engines or transmissions may have been subject to manufacturer recalls. Ensure the part youâre buying hasnât been affected by a recall.
Be Patient: Finding the right used engine or used transmission might take time. Donât rush the process, as a hasty decision could lead to buyerâs remorse.
Conclusion Buying used engines and used transmissions is a great way to save money on car repairs, especially if you are looking at older vehicles or unique projects. With some research, good inspection of the parts, and dealing with reputable sellers, you can get a high-quality part that fits your needs. Just be aware of the potential risks and be cautious when buying. Whether youâre a car enthusiast or simply trying to keep your vehicle running smoothly, buying used parts can be a smart and cost-effective solution.

Customizing Your Corvette: A Look at Exterior Styling Options
Owning a Corvette is more than just driving a car; it's embracing a legacy of speed, style, and sophistication. Many Corvette owners want to go further by adding a unique flair to their ride with customized touches. From sleek body kits to bold paint jobs and dynamic wheel options, letâs dive into ways to take your Corvetteâs exterior styling up a notch with some standout options in Corvette parts and accessories and Corvette exterior accessories.
1. Body Kits: Sculpting Your Corvetteâs Signature Look
A body kit can dramatically change your Corvette's appearance, making it more aggressive, aerodynamic, or modern. Body kits often include front and rear bumpers, side skirts, spoilers, and diffusers. Whether you're looking to capture a race-inspired look or give it a low, mean stance, body kits offer a range of looks. Quality kits will fit seamlessly with the car's contours and often come ready for painting. Additionally, carbon fiber or fiberglass materials are popular choices for lightweight performance without sacrificing style.
2. Wheels: Where Style Meets Performance
Wheels are like a car's shoes â they tie the look together and can say a lot about the car's personality. Custom Corvette wheels come in various designs, finishes, and sizes. Opting for larger wheels can add a sportier look, while chrome or black finishes can give your Corvette a classic or edgy feel. Lightweight alloy wheels not only look great but can also improve handling and performance. And if youâre aiming to make heads turn, consider color accents or unique patterns that showcase your style.
3. Custom Paint Jobs: Making a Bold Statement
Few things speak louder than a custom paint job. A new paint color can instantly rejuvenate the appearance of your Corvette, making it feel like a brand-new car. Some owners go for a high-gloss finish to reflect light in style, while others might prefer a matte look for a more understated, sleek aesthetic. Thereâs also the option of using wrap films, which come in endless colors and patterns. Wraps are ideal if you want a bold look without committing to permanent paint, as they are easily removable and can protect your original paint job.
4. Decals and Stripes: Sporty Finishes
Decals and racing stripes are a classic way to add personality to your Corvette without a full paint job. From single stripes that run the length of your car to more intricate designs on the hood or sides, decals offer versatility. Racing stripes, in particular, are a nostalgic nod to Corvetteâs racing heritage and give your car a speedy, ready-to-race vibe. Choose a color that complements or contrasts with your Corvetteâs paint, and youâll have a new look in no time.
5. Lights and Trim: Illuminating Details
Lights and trim can be the finishing touches that set your Corvette apart. LED or custom headlight options can add a modern look, while upgraded tail lights with a smoked or clear finish give a unique touch to the rear. Consider swapping out stock side markers or grilles for options that match your preferred look. Custom badges or emblems on the exterior are also subtle but effective ways to make your Corvette unmistakably yours.

Key Considerations for Starting a Profitable Car Hauling Business
Starting a car hauling business can be an attractive entrepreneurial opportunity, especially with the growing demand for vehicle transportation services across the country. Whether it's moving cars for auto dealerships, manufacturers, or private clients, there is a consistent need for efficient and reliable car haulers. However, success in this business isn't automaticâit requires careful planning, proper equipment, effective marketing, and a commitment to customer satisfaction. This article explores key considerations for anyone interested in building a profitable and sustainable car-hauling business.
Understanding the Demand and Market
Before diving into the logistics and operations, it's essential to understand the demand for car hauling services. The vehicle transport industry caters to a variety of customers, including auto dealerships, rental agencies, auction houses, car manufacturers, and private individuals who need to relocate vehicles. Understanding who your customers are and what their specific needs are is crucial in designing your business model.
For example, auto dealerships may need frequent transport services to move cars between locations or to deliver new inventory from manufacturers. On the other hand, individual customers might seek out car hauling services for relocation or purchasing a car from out of state. Researching and identifying your target market will help you define your services, set appropriate pricing, and develop a competitive edge. In addition, understanding regional demandâwhether local, interstate, or even nationwideâcan influence your business decisions, from choosing the size of your fleet to marketing strategies.
Choosing the Right Equipment
The heart of any car-hauling business lies in the equipment used to transport vehicles. When starting, you'll need to decide on the type of hauling equipment that best suits your business needs. The most common types of car haulers are flatbed trailers, open-air multi-car carriers, and enclosed car carriers. Each has its benefits and limitations depending on the type of vehicles you plan to transport and the nature of your clientele.
Flatbed trailers are versatile and useful for hauling a variety of vehicle types, especially if you plan on transporting oversized or specialty vehicles. Multi-car carriers are ideal for hauling multiple vehicles at once, making them suitable for transporting cars for dealerships or bulk orders. Enclosed carriers, while more expensive, offer the added benefit of protecting high-end, luxury, or classic cars from the elements and road debris during transport.
While purchasing new equipment can be costly, buying quality, reliable trailers and trucks is crucial for the longevity of your business. Additionally, make sure to budget for the ongoing maintenance of your equipment. Regular inspections and proper upkeep will minimize the risk of breakdowns and ensure that your fleet remains in top working condition, keeping your business on schedule and maintaining your reputation.
Navigating Legal Requirements and Regulations
Car hauling businesses are subject to numerous regulations at the federal, state, and local levels. Before you can legally operate, it's crucial to obtain the necessary licenses and permits. In the United States, you'll need a Motor Carrier Authority (MC number) from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) if you plan to transport vehicles across state lines. Additionally, you must register for a U.S. DOT number to comply with transportation regulations.
In addition to federal permits, state-specific licensing may be required depending on your location and the routes you plan to operate on. Each state has its own set of rules regarding weight limits, insurance coverage, and vehicle registration. Understanding these regulations will prevent costly fines and delays down the road.
Insurance is another critical consideration. Car hauling businesses need several types of insurance coverage, including liability insurance, cargo insurance, and physical damage insurance for your vehicles and equipment. Liability insurance protects against third-party injuries or property damage, while cargo insurance covers damage to the vehicles you're transporting. Having adequate insurance not only ensures legal compliance but also helps protect your business from financial loss in case of accidents or damage during transport.
Building a Strong Team of Drivers
Your drivers are essential to the success of your car-hauling business, as they directly impact safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. Recruiting skilled, reliable drivers with experience in vehicle transport is a crucial step in building a strong team. A good car hauler needs to be knowledgeable about loading and unloading vehicles safely, understanding weight distribution, and securing cars for transit.
Additionally, commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) are required for most car hauling positions, especially for drivers operating heavy-duty vehicles. Hiring drivers who are both experienced and well-trained in safety procedures can help reduce risks and ensure your business runs smoothly.
Furthermore, it's essential to create an environment that fosters loyalty and minimizes turnover. Offering competitive pay, benefits, and incentives will help retain your drivers and keep them motivated. Providing ongoing training on new safety protocols and customer service standards will ensure that your team stays up to date with industry best practices.
Marketing and Customer Acquisition
Even with the best equipment and skilled drivers, no business can succeed without a solid marketing strategy. Building a strong brand presence both online and offline is key to attracting new clients and standing out in a competitive market.
Start by establishing an online presence with a professional website that showcases your services, pricing, and contact details. Make sure your website is optimized for search engines (SEO) so that potential customers can easily find your business when searching for car hauling services in your area. Customer testimonials, clear service descriptions, and easy-to-navigate contact forms will help build trust and encourage inquiries.
In addition to a website, leverage social media platforms to reach a wider audience. Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn offer excellent platforms to share updates, promote special offers, and engage with your customer base. Social media is also an effective way to display customer reviews and success stories, which can greatly enhance your business reputation.
Offline marketing is also valuable, especially when targeting local auto dealerships, car rental companies, or auction houses. Building relationships with local businesses in the automotive industry can lead to steady contracts and word-of-mouth referrals. Networking through industry events or trade shows can also open doors for new partnerships and collaborations.
Effective Route Planning and Operational Efficiency
In the car hauling business, time is money, so operational efficiency is a major consideration. One of the most important aspects of this is route planning. Optimizing routes to avoid traffic, road closures, or detours can save you significant amounts in fuel costs and time, which will ultimately improve your bottom line.
Using GPS technology or route optimization software can help ensure that you always take the quickest and most fuel-efficient routes. This technology can also alert you to any issues along your planned routes, helping you adjust in real time and avoid costly delays.
Moreover, when scheduling jobs, make sure you plan carefully to avoid overloading your fleet or pushing drivers too hard. Efficient scheduling allows you to maximize the use of your equipment while ensuring that deliveries are made on time and without compromising safety.
Financial Management and Budgeting
Running a profitable car-hauling business requires careful financial management. From the cost of equipment and fuel to driver wages and maintenance, there are numerous expenses to keep track of. Establishing a detailed budget will help you monitor expenses, ensure profitability, and identify areas where costs can be reduced.
It's also essential to establish a reliable payment system for your customers. Many car-hauling businesses operate on contracts or invoicing systems, where payments are made after the service has been provided. Clear payment terms, including deposit requirements and deadlines for full payment, will help keep your cash flow consistent and avoid financial stress.
Keep in mind that while the business has strong revenue potential, it can also have high overhead costs. As you grow your fleet, you'll need to balance between expanding your capacity and managing expenses to ensure that your profit margins remain healthy.
Starting a car hauling business offers many opportunities but requires careful attention to several key factors for success. From understanding the market demand and investing in the right equipment to maintaining legal compliance and developing a strong customer base, every element plays a role in building a profitable operation. By focusing on driver recruitment, operational efficiency, and effective marketing, you can position your business for long-term growth and sustainability. With the right planning and commitment, your car-hauling business can thrive and become a trusted name in the transportation industry.

From Vintage to Modern: Used Engines and Transmissions for Every Vehicle
The automotive world has always been a blend of nostalgia and innovation. From classic cars that evoke memories of a bygone era to cutting-edge modern vehicles that push the limits of technology, every vehicle tells a story. But when it comes to maintaining or restoring these vehicles, the engine and transmission are at the heart of their performance. At Vander Engine, we specialize in providing top-quality used engines and transmissions for every type of vehicle, from vintage classics to modern marvels.
Why Choose Used Engines and Transmissions?
When itâs time to replace an engine or transmission, many car owners and enthusiasts are faced with a tough decision: new, rebuilt, or used? For a growing number of individuals, used engines and transmissions present the ideal balance of affordability, quality, and sustainability. Here are a few reasons why opting for used parts might be the best choice:
Cost Efficiency: Purchasing used engines and transmissions can save up to 50% compared to new or rebuilt parts, offering budget-conscious drivers a reliable alternative.
Environmental Benefits: Reusing engines and transmissions reduces the demand for new manufacturing, helping to minimize environmental impact. This contributes to a more sustainable future by recycling existing parts.
Availability of Rare Parts: For owners of vintage or classic cars, finding brand-new parts can be a challenge. Used engines and transmissions often provide access to components that are no longer in production, making them a lifeline for restoration projects.

We offer a wide selection of used vintage engines and transmissions to help you preserve the original spirit of your car while ensuring it performs like a dream.
