Steve and Robin had just been let go from Family Video, for apparently "spending more time watching movies, than doing their job". If they didn't want them watching movies, they shouldn't have put a display TV in the store. Now, the two were driving around downtown looking for any help wanted signs. "I don't get it, Robbie! I laid down all that Harrington charm, you'd think she would have hired us right on the spot!."

"Steve, if that was what you called 'charm', I'm starting to really understand why you can never land a second date." Robin snorted from the passenger seat. "That poor barista, probably threw out both of our applications, after that pick up line you used."

"It was a classic! You just don't-" "STOP!" Steve slammed on his breaks, causing the car behind them to speed around, flipping them both off. "Robin, you can't do-"

"I seen the big ol' help wanted sign, and didn't want us to miss out on this momentous opportunity." Robin shrugged, as Steve parked along the sidewalk.

Steve grumbled back a response under his breath, as they both exited the car, making their way towards the Record Shop. "Hey, lighten up! This job might be 'life changing'! What if we find the love of your life here!" Robin joked, as she jabbed at Steve's side.

"Robin, if we get hired here, and it leads to me finding the 'love of my life', I will give you my car." Steve added sarcastically, as he opened the door for Robin.

It has been two weeks, since they both got hired at the Record Shop. Max, Lucas, and Dustin have visited a couple times. Max was excited, because she presumed she would be able to use Steve's discount to get all the tapes she could imagine for her Walkman. Steve, and Robin both loved the place, the owners were a really cute old couple, Roy and Tammy, they got to play whatever they wanted over the store speakers while they worked, see all the new releases, wear their own clothes as a uniform. Steve and Robin had even come up with their own game behind the counter, where they would try and guess what a customer was going to buy, based on what they were wearing. They even had a little tally going on in the backroom. Robin was much better at Steve than this guessing game, leading by seven points.

Today, Robin asked Steve if he was fine running the shop on his own, she had plans to get coffee with this girl from the Bookstore across the street from the Record store. Her name was Nancy, and she had been in quite a few times since the two have gotten hired, constantly asking Robin her thoughts and opinions on certain tracks. Robin's been smitten ever since. Steve had agreed, wishing her luck, as he hung up the phone.

Steve got to work today, wearing his favorite yellow sweater, some light wash jeans, and his white chucks. It was a Thursday, inventory day, Steve had forgotten that was today, when he had so easily agreed to let Robin take the day off. Steve huffed, and cursed Robin in his head, as he brought yet another box up to the front counter. He sighed when he took a seat at the counter, as he laid his head down on the cool counter, enjoying a split second of bliss, before the door was practically kicked open, letting the bell that hung over the door ring louder than normal. Steve shot his head up, sitting up straighter, as the person walked in.

"Ohhhh Roooyyy, you know what today is! Metallica just dropped a new album, man!" The stranger called out as he walked directly towards the labeled section, not even glancing at the counter. "Also, whats with this pop garbage over the speakers, man!" Steve took this time to watch him, as he sifted through the various album covers, as his ring clad fingers pulled out an album to marvel at, before placing it back. He watched as the man, stuck his tongue out as he moved to the next row, and how he shook his long hair out of his face, and continued to search. Steve stared at the vest that covered his back, and the way his jeans clung to his legs, chain looped across the first two loops of his jeans, and the neatly folded black hankerchif sticking out of his back pocket.

Steve stood from the counter, running a hand through his hair, as he went to approach the stranger. The man hummed a tune softly under his breath, that Steve was unfamiliar with. Just as Steve was going to clear his throat to get his attention, the man let out an exasperated sigh, before yelling, "Roy! Did you fall in the back again?" The man quickly turned around, running right into Steve's chest.

They both let out gasps, the stranger from shock, and Steve from the blow. As the two regained balance, the man laughed. "Holy shit, man, say something next time!"

Steve, now even closer to the stranger, could not find any words. Too busy, scanning his features up close, getting lost in his pretty brown eyes. Steve shook himself out of his thoughts, before clearing his throat. "M'sorry, was trying to catch my breath again over at the counter when you walked in."

"Wow, didn't realize I had that kind of effect on strangers, let alone hot strangers. What's your name?" The man smiled slyly, as he looked up at Steve.

Steve felt the heat rush to his cheeks, trying to hide his reaction, as he crossed his arms over his chest. "Uh, Steve. Roy isn't in today, but it is inventory day, so any new releases, I'm in the middle of putting out right now." Steve turned away from the man's intense gaze, clearing his throat as he turned away, walking towards the counter again. "I'm sorry, normally they're out by now, 'cause I have my coworker to help, but they're gone today." Steve continued to explain, as the man followed him to the counter where the boxes were stacked.

"S'Fine. Need a hand?" The man asked, as Steve opened up one of the boxes.

"No, I couldn't ask you to do that, I'll just hurry up, try and get you your album sooner." Steve said quickly, as he went to lift another box onto the counter. The man reached out, and put his hand on Steve's shoulder, stopping his frantic movements. Steve felt his whole body heat up from the touch alone.

"As much as I'd love to see you all sweaty, theres no need to do all that. I seriously don't mind, I've helped Roy and Tams a couple times anyways." He explained, as he took the box from Steves hands. "The names Eddie, by the way."

"Eddie." Steve quietly repeated to himself, as he opend the other box that Eddie had moved on to the counter. "Sooo, do you come around here often?"

"Are you flirting with me, Stevie?" Eddie looked up from the box in front of him, giving Steve that same smile from before.

"No- I just- Well-" Steve tried to quickly get out, as Eddie let out a melodic laugh.

"I'm joking, you walked right into that one." Eddie shook his head, as he turned away from the counter with a stack of new albums ready to put them in their respective section. Steve was still a blushing mess, wondering how any person could have this effect on him.

He was taken out of his trance by Eddie calling for him from across the store. "Steve, is this fucking ABBA playing?" He questioned, as the opening note to "Dancing Queen" played through the store.

Steve nodded, as he moved closer to where Eddie stood, with another stack of albums in his hand. "Yeah, why?"

"S'Nothing, I just thought Roy let you guys play your own music, while you worked." Eddie continued, as he moved past Steve to grab some another stack.

Steve stood their confused, watching Eddies back as he walked to the counter. "He does?" Steve replied, confused as to what Eddie was getting at.

Eddie let out another laugh, as he walked back over to Steve. "You're funny, dude. Seriously, that's hilarious." Steve looked towards Eddie again, giving him a quizzical look.

"What did I say?" Steve asked.

Eddie stopped in his tracks, and looked up at Steve. "Wait, wait, wait. You're not kidding? You seriously play ABBA while you work? Holy shit, I think I need a minute." He placed down the stack of albums, on a nearby counter, before he literally doubled over in laughter. Steve huffed as he set down his albums as well, walking close to Eddie, with both hands on his hips.

"What's so funny about it?" Steve questioned as Eddie continued to laugh. Steve tried very hard to keep the bit going, as he listened to Eddie's infectious laugh.

Eddied sounded out of breath as he replied. "You just don't look the type, maybe some Bee Gees, Journey, I don't know, even Tears for Fears."

"Huh? What's so shocking about it? What's not to like?" Steve continued to question, as Eddie started laughing again. "Youuu can dance, youuu can jiiive." Steve began to sing along, making Eddie laugh even harder, swatting his hand at nothing in an attempt to get Steve to stop.

The two let out a long sigh as the song conlcuded, Eddie shaking his head as he looked over at Steve, who whistled along to the final notes. "I'm going to make it my personal mission to show you some real music, Steve."

Steve rolled his eyes at the remarks, as he walked back over to continue putting away his stack.

The two finished fairly quick, throwing playful banter at each other the whole time, and Eddie continued to judge every single choice Steve made for music. By the time they finished, it was just in time for Steve to close up shop. He sighed, as he moved from the back room to lock up the front door, and flip the sign from "Open" to "Closed". He turned back to face Eddie who had made himself comfortable, sitting at the stool behind the counter, examnining the wall of posters that Roy had Steve and Robin put up.

"Lemme pick the music now." Eddied requested, as he hopped off the stool, walking over to Steve. Steve smiled, shaking his head. "Sorry, store’s closed, sir. You'll have to get going."

Eddie groaned, throwing his head back. "Stevie! Please! I will fall over and d*e right on this store floor, if you don't let me choose one song to play for you." Steve tried to stifle his laugh, with the back of his sleeve, shaking his head. Eddie rolled his eyes, letting out a big sigh before throwing himself on the floor. Steve let out a gasp, crouching over Eddie

"Dude! I was joking!" Steve exclaimed, as his eyes scanned over Eddies face. Eddies face broke out in a wide grin, as he opened his eyes, bringing his hand up to pat Steves cheeks.

"I knew you'd come aorund, Big Boy." Eddie pushed himself back up, quickly moving over to the section labeled "Rock". Steve still recovering from the nickname, watched as Eddie picked up an album, from the "D" section. Eddie turned on his heel, running over to the stores record player, carefully placing the pin, over his desired area.

Steve listened as the opening notes played through the store. He watched as Eddies smile grew, as he began nodding along to the beat. He finally turned to help Steve up from the floor. "I Speed at Night by Dio." Eddie announced, as Steve listened carefully. "I figured I'd ease you into my kind of music, I think this one is pretty mellow, mainstream for this genre." Eddie continued.

Steve shoved Eddie playfully. "I don't listen to mainstream music." At this, Eddie laughed again. “Also, I would not consider this ‘mellow’.” As the song continued.

"Steve, every song you played made me think we were just listening to the Top 50 Hits radio station." Eddie replied.

"You suck." Steve sighed, as they let the song play out.

Two hours later, Steve and Eddie were sat across from each other at the counter, a box of take out placed between them, that Eddie had ran down the road to get, insisting he buy Steve dinner. The only light left on in the store, being the single lamp, that hung over the counter, illuminating the two boys' animated conversation.

The new Metallica album, Master of Puppets, played lowly in the background, as Eddie stood up and reenacted a portion of his story, Steve watching closely, as if Eddie held the Sun in his hands, while he continued to eat from their shared box.

The boys were interrupted as they heard the door rattle, and quiet voices, as the bell above the door rang out. Steve stood quickly, Eddie close by his side, Steve held his breath, anticipating the worst, until he heard it.

“Steve? Robin?” Steve recognized the voice that called out, as the shop owner, Roy. Steve finally let out the breath he was holding as Roy approached the counter. “Didn’t expect you to still be here.” Roy said softly, before looking up to see the two boys standing closely together. “Oh! I see you’ve met, Eddie.”

‘No one else is saving it’: the fight to protect a historic music collection ...

It all started in a loft in Tribeca, New York, long before it was a trendy neighbourhood. “I had 47,000 records and nobody wanted them,” recalls Bob George, who had just published a discography of punk and new wave music. “That led a lot of people coming to me and saying you have to save this stuff; no one else is saving it. That got the ball rolling in my loft in what is now fashionable Tribeca, which was an incredibly unfashionable war zone in 1974 when I was first there.”

George turned his record collection into the ARChive of Contemporary Music (Arc) in 1985 with co-founder David Wheeler. The non-profit music library and research centre now contains more than 3m sound recordings or over 90m songs, making it one of the biggest popular music collections in the world. Donors and board members have included David Bowie, Jonathan Demme, Lou Reed, Martin Scorsese and Paul Simon.

The Arc is not open to the public but has been a vital resource for film-makers, writers and researchers ranging from Ken Burns looking for a song for his series Baseball to the new Grammy Hall of Fame and Museum in Los Angeles needing cover art for its inducted recordings. Now, however, this unique treasure trove is under existential threat.

The Arc cannot remain at its current Hudson Valley premises indefinitely and is in need of a new and bigger home. “We have to move and we don’t know when we’ll have to move and the collection is really at risk because it’s all on pallets,” says George, who dreams of a patron like James Smithson, the British scientist who left his estate to the US to found the Smithsonian Institution. “We’re looking for someone to help us buy a very wonderful property or for us to build a new building on vacant land in upstate New York.”

After growing up in Youngstown, Ohio, George moved to New York in 1974 as a visual arts student and started collecting records as a DJ. In 1981 he released Laurie Anderson’s first single, O Superman, which sold nearly a million copies worldwide and made it to number on the UK singles chart. He was a guest on John Peel’s beloved BBC radio show, sneaking in little-known records from New York, and took music to European broadcasters too. People kept giving him records that other collections turned down.

“I was doing the book and then doing Peel shows and it accidentally became this large collection that nobody wanted. They kept saying, oh, we collect classical, we collect Broadway, we collect ethnic music. I said, well, I have funk, reggae, African and hip-hop and they said, oh, no, we don’t collect any of that. Forty years later, I say, you put all those together and that’s what music has become.”

The simple goal of the archive, which has always had a peripatetic existence, is preservation. “We have no interest in quality,” George cheerfully admits. “It started that way from the very beginning because there’s no way to tell what’s valuable in the future. Everybody brings their own criteria and tastes to things in their own time. But the future is quite different, as we hope.”

The archive has never received aid from any city, state or federal organisation but its scale gives the Library of Congress a run for its money. It has absorbed major collections from musicians and fans and is home to most of Rolling Stone Keith Richards’ extensive blues inventory.

George dispatched two semi-trailers to a condemned house in Boston sinking under the weight of Jeep Holland’s set of more than 125,000 recordings and over 2,500 signed albums from the likes of the Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and the Sex Pistols. “Going towards the bathroom, he has a gas stove, the pilot light is on, there are records in the oven. It was just a storage space ... His car had become so full of records that he abandoned it and rented a car.”

George has made repeat trips to countries such as Brazil, Cambodia, Colombia, Cuba, Japan, Jordan, Laos and Thailand. The Arc contains Demme’s personal collection of Haitian albums. More than 150,000 pieces of world music have been catalogued; there are plenty more to do. “We’ve tried to get as much of that material as possible so that collection is just fabulous.”

The Arc preserves copies of every recording in all known formats. It has electronically catalogued more than 400,000 sound recordings and digitised 200,000 with the Internet Archive – more than any other public university or private library in America. It also contains more than 3m pieces of material including photos, videos, DVDs, books, magazines, press kits, sheet music, ephemera and memorabilia.

George says: “We catalogued 105,000 singles just recently; we have another 200,000 or 300,000 to go. This is the first way a band at one time got their feet in the water. They put out one or two or three singles. If they did hits, they got the chance to do an album and so much of this material does not exist on LP or CD. Little by little more of it might be streaming because of YouTube, as people can get away with murder on YouTube, which is great, but YouTube will disappear. Everything commercial will disappear.”

Among those who have turned to the archive is the Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, who wanted records by the singer Bert Sommer for his film Taking Woodstock. “The archive is amazing because we don’t know what we have until somebody needs it. We’ve been into the stacks and we found five LPs by Bert Sommer. For me, it’s like I have no idea who this guy is and what he did; he’s sort of a folkie. For Quincy Jones, we just sent him a list of the 8,000 things that he’s either produced or on.

“Research was how we basically stayed alive along with the largesse of the rock stars or celebrities that we had hooked up with. The idea was never to open to the public but that’s what we want to do now. I don’t think it’s untrue that we’re one of the largest in the world and that we want to make that available. We’ve tried to save two copies so there will always be a listening copy and then that would then become a listening library.”

George hopes the new archive will be open to students, educators, historians, musicians, authors, journalists and the general public. An anonymous donor has come forward with a million dollars to help realise that dream but more money is urgently needed. One possible new home is an abandoned IBM campus spanning 34 acres, although that would cost $8-10m. George is considering partnering with an upstate university and has plans to offer residencies for scholars.

“People could come in and produce a work, and that would go out into the world. It could be a blog, essay, tape, compilation, new recording, whatever. We’re really quite un-academic. I’m against it somewhat and I’d like people to have ideas and bring those ideas and put them back into the world as opposed to making it an interactive experience for everybody. I don’t want to be Disney World. It’s nice to have seminars. It’s nice to have listening parties. It’s nice to have dances.”

Hi! So uh, this isn't edited at all. I wrote it on the fly and like, I'm half asleep. BUT! I saw you said you're sad and well, I'm that same anon that asked about prompts a while back. I don't expect you to answer this at all. It's wayyyy too big to post to your blog. That's just, cuckoo bananas. I just don't like seeing people sad. So like, random act of kindness type thing. Yah know? Anyway, hope this cheers you up a little? Maybe? Sorry it's so shit! 😂 but it's something!

“I’m miserable,” Eddie’s voice is just a mumble over the phone. His tone matches his words, defeated.

“What? Why?” Steve’s driving home, squinting through his windshield as rain pours down, wipers not doing much.

There’s a long sigh, Steve thinks he can hear an echo. Eddie must be in the bath. That’s how he knows it was bad. Eddie only ever takes baths on really very bad days.

“Well,” Eddie starts, and sure enough, Steve can hear the splash of water as Eddie moves in it. It’s long winded, Eddie’s explanation, takes a lot of detours because Eddie can never just say things straight. He slept past his alarm. 7Eleven didn’t have yellow Red bull, so he had to settle for regular or die drinking sugar-free. When he got outside it was pouring buckets and he slipped in an oil puddle, lost his breakfast sandwich. Ripped the thigh of his jeans in the process. When he got in his van the sunroof was leaking, leaking down into his new pack of cigarettes. When he went to drink his Red bull it exploded on him. Was extremely late to work and was made to do inventory in the back because he, ‘couldn’t be seen on the floor looking like that.’ “Which, like, whatever Jessica, she was wearing crocs with fishnets. Seriously. So, like, what’s the real crime here?”

“Eddie,” Steve chides, grins anyway.

“Really though, Steve. Anyway,” He takes another deep breath. Goes on about how when he went to put in his AirPods, so he didn’t have to sit in silent torture all day, they weren’t connecting. Which, wasn’t surprising because he phone had busted under the weight of his, ‘not so fat ass’ falling down on it. So, silent torture it was. Then, when he got off work he had therapy, which he was more than relieved to actually go to. He needed to vent. Only, when he got there he had, “bumped into your ex.”

“Tommy?” Steve asks and Eddie groans.

“Billy.”

“Oh.”

“He apparently goes to the same therapist as me. He says ‘hi,’ by the way. Wants to ‘catch up’ with you or whatever.” He’s mumbling again, “Does he drive a classic Camaro?”

“Uh, yeah?”

“Asshole,” Eddie tried to say it quietly but Steve heard it none the less. Steve could imagine it. Could see Eddie all dirty, torn clothes, hair clumped up from the Red bull, come face to face with, “He looked like a damn Greek god. Smug, too.” Steve can hear the sneer in Eddie’s voice.

“Don’t worry about him. I’m not interested in catching up. Have you eaten?” There’s a long silence, and Steve can actually hear the loud grumble that emits from Eddie’s stomach. The mention of food probably igniting something in him.

“Big Mac large with a Dr. Pepper and six-piece chicken nuggets, honey mustard. Want an apple pie?”

Eddie stays silent and Steve knows what that means, “And an apple pie,” Steve says, “You finish up your bath, put on my big comfy robe, you know the one that you always steal?” Steve always acts so annoyed by it but he secretly loves it, knows Eddie knows that too, “put on The Fellowship of the Ring, get nice and cozy. I’ll do your hair tonight while you eat.”

Through the silence Steve can hear a small sniffle. It breaks his heart.

“I love you, Eddie,” Steve says, puts his car in park.

“I love you, too, baby.”

“Hold tight, I’ll be home soon,” They say their goodbyes.

Steve doesn’t just come home with a big bag full of McDonalds. He comes home with a bouquet of sunflowers and big colorful gerbera daisies and two great big Cinnabon cinnamon buns.

“Uncle Wayne!” Eddie pauses the movie as soon as Steve walks in. He’s leaning forward on the couch, eyes glittering as he looks over the Cinnabon bag. It’s of course not literally Wayne but the next best thing Steve could get him. Eddie had told him once that on rare occasions Wayne would have a night off. Which always meant he could take Eddie to school in the morning, dropping by Cinnabon to grab a quick super indulgent breakfast.

“Fuck, you’re the best,” Eddie says, gets up to help Steve get everything together. Only, Steve gently pushes him back down onto the couch.

“Watch your movie. I’ve got this,” Steve says. With a little hesitation Eddie does as he he’s told and watches as Steve sets the coffee table up for him. He lays out his food and settles the flowers in a vase. From there he makes a cozy little nest of pillows and blankets on the ground between the coffee table and the couch. Eddie shifts down into it easily as he starts to dig into his food.

Steve knows how easily Eddie forgets to feed himself. Always ends up like a wild animal by the end of the day, shoving food in his mouth like he’s never eaten before and doesn’t know when he’ll eat again. Steve settles behind him, wraps his arms around his shoulders, nuzzles his nose through the thick curtain of damp hair and kisses at his neck. Eddie turns his head, looks at Steve. He’s got a mouthful of burger and a fry in his hand and Steve presses a kiss to the corner of his lips, picks up a little bit of Big Mac sauce as he does. He doesn’t care, just licks his lips clean of it.

“That was kind of gross,” Eddie remarks after he swallows, a smile on his face regardless.

“Eh, I suck your dick, so,” Steve shrugs. Eddie nods, gives a look that says, ‘fair enough’ before shoving the fry in his mouth.

“I need a real one,” Eddie says around the fry.

“Real what?” Steve asks and Eddie points at his lips. Steve just smiles and leans down, presses a soft kiss to Eddie’s lips. It’s been years and yet, each time still feels like the first for Steve. Electricity flowing from his lips down to his heart, sparks popping over his skin. He pulls back, opens his eyes before Eddie. Eddie’s just frozen, head pressed back against Steve’s thigh. Eddie takes in a deep breath and slowly his eyes open, focus on Steve. Big brown eyes and they hold so many thoughts. Steve thinks the only one right now being ‘Love’.

“I think I’m going to start prepping breakfasts and lunches for you,” Steve says and watches as Eddie’s eyes glaze over. Thinks they’re now saying, ‘adore’.

“I’d like that,” Eddie says and Steve kisses him again.

They spend the rest of the night watching the movie. Steve settled behind Eddie. He’s working through Eddie’s hair. It’s a long process of different products. Conditioner, curl cream, a special brush that he has to twirl the hair on and over. He’s methodical with it. Takes his time, goes slow and gentle. Halfway through Eddie’s a puddle in his lap, dozing in and out of sleep. When he’s done he’s gently crunching up the newly made ringlets with gel. Takes one of Eddie’s black silk hankies and wraps his hair up in it.

Steve’s careful, so careful, to not wake Eddie. He slips his arms down, picks him up bridal style and moves him to the bed. He’d set it up the way Eddie likes it the best. He’s got every one of their fluffy comforters on it, makes a big nest in the middle of the bed. When he settles Eddie down in the middle of it he grabs their biggest fuzziest faux fur blanket and tosses it over him. When he turns to go and clean up Eddie whines, reaches out a hand and Steve turns to take it.

“Stay,” Is all Eddie says and Steve thinks that clean up can wait until tomorrow. Without hesitation he strips down and settles himself into the nest with Eddie.

There’s only a bit of shifting before they end up in Eddie’s favorite position. The one he likes to call, ‘Steve Bearrington.’ Which is just Eddie being the big spoon but likes to think of it more as Steve being his own personal teddy bear.

Eddie can’t say that he’d ever want another day like this, but if he can spend every night being spoiled by Steve Harrington, he thinks it’s more than worth it.

Sorry I posted this so late, I ended up wanting to hold onto it for awhile and re-read it about a dozen times. It's so so sweet and definitely helped me through some rough days, so thank you very much for sharing this with me 💜

Well, if you can get a mortgage for the $400,000 property listed on Zillow right now, that dream can be your reality. But like every dream, this one's gonna take work to realize, because boy is this place an unpolished gem.

Currently for sale in Canaan, New Hampshire near the Vermont border, this property is aimed directly at all of us. "ARE YOU A CAR ENTHUSIAST?" opens the ad, which is for the grounds of a defunct classic car boneyard called Parts of the Past. The 18-acre site is littered with close to 300 classics in varying conditions, some of them seemingly in good shape. Others... You'd better be up to date on your tetanus shots.

A pile of doors suggests many may have been picked for parts already, so there's no telling how complete most of the cars are. Going by the surprising bounty at the overgrown former AMC dealer in North Carolina, more of them may be in good shape than we think. But even taking inventory of the cars on the lot and their condition would be a months-long process if it's not your full-time job. Is it more than the sum of its parts, or does it even add up to that in the first place? That's for people who get boots on the ground to decide. Me, I'd sooner take one running car and a livable house, but to each their own.

There was David from high school and Charles from college and a few Stevens and a Michael or three… I felt exactly the same way about each of them and they had nothing in common other than that feeling. That, and that I knew they wouldn’t stay.

The terror sets in waiting for them to leave. Knowing from the very beginning that this is someone who will leave, because otherwise it doesn’t work. Once, I reveled in that exquisite torture. Called it that aloud: “exquisite torture.” So numb, I suppose, that feeling anything was better than feeling nothing. This, at least, was intense enough for me to feel, like curry on a cold. But now it’s just torture. It’s quivering, all-consuming fear. Maybe not all-consuming. Like the grief, the fear comes in waves.

The writing trails off there. I imagine I was too unhappy to continue. It’s funny looking back now on the list of men — tall, short, thick, thin, fair, dark, smart, dumb, young, old, rich, poor — and I realize I never had a type in the classic sense. My type was “unavailable.” No wonder I was sad. 

Well, it did all become a book in the end, which I suppose is the good news. And if you relate to those feeling, I commend you to it. It might help. Because the better news is this: I don’t feel like that any more. Ever. I mean, never say never but I think I don’t ever have to feel that way again. Because wanting to leave is no longer an attractive feature on a man, and I no longer find exquisite torture exquisite. Change happens.
