“I promise I’ll be more careful.” Only a sigh came out of Eugene’s pursed lips as he inspected the bruise on your temple. You were lucky Toye had called out for you, making you turn around and block the sniper’s bullet with your helmet. The event left you shocked and a bit bruised but nothing time wouldn’t take care of. You couldn’t say the same about Eugene.

“Eugene. I’m sorry.” Not one of your attempts to get him to express his feelings worked. He stood, fingers carefully moving your face so he could watch the bruise closer and eyes focused, his furrowed brows shadowing them even more. The tips of his fingers shook as they traveled down your cheek and your heart broke into a million pieces. On impulse, you wrapped both of your hands around one of his and lifted it, placing a kiss on his knuckles. His eyes drifted to yours, the anger he felt wearing off and replaced by exhaustion and sadness.

“You could’ve died.” This was an unspoken truth, known to every soldier but never addressed. Every day could be your last and Death could claim you any moment it deemed fit. Such a whimsy thing. But there had always been this belief, as stupid as it sounds, that you wouldn’t be part of Death’s tribute. That somehow everything would be okay and the bullets would simply drift away from you. But today, the hole in your helmet and the bruise on your face as well as the remembrance of Joe’s panicked look shook this conviction until it was nothing more than shreds of glass. You felt utterly bare in front of your fear.

“But I didn’t.” Eugene frowned and you knew he was imagining all kinds of scenarios, though all had the same ending. You wanted to toss your fear away but it was clawing at you like a drowning man, making it hard to breathe as you tried to reassure Eugene. But even if you did get rid of the fear… what would there be left of you ? It was a thought that made you shudder.

“Gene, you won’t get rid of me that easily.” The teasing tone rolled off your lips naturally, masking the small tremor in your voice. And yet Eugene heard it, his face softening like snow melting to snow and hurt settling deep in his eyes.

“I’ll protect you and I’ll patch you up if I need to. But I won’t let you go, mon amour.” His face soft and his voice was steel, the love dripping from it softening the edges. This was a promise, an oath he wouldn’t break unless he’d break too.

Leaning, you hugged him close, half for your own comfort and half for hiding the gleaming tears in your eyes. Your chin on his shoulder and his arms around your waist, you breathed softly through your nose while Eugene whispered sweet nothings in French in your hair. You had always known Eugene would do whatever he could to help you, in whatever way was needed, and never once doubted it. This merely felt like something more, without you knowing why. Maybe it was because you had never been so close to Death before ? You’d never know but one thing was for sure : you were his angel as much as he was yours.

“Oh, that was wonderful!” you sighed into the warm night. “I could have danced until morning!”

He chuckled. “When would you sleep?”

You giggled. Classic Shifty, worried about you taking care of yourself. You supposed that would make him a good soldier to his comrades, as he would always look out for them. But you didn’t want to think about that now. Not on his last night before basic training. Especially after the town had just thrown such an incredible dance for all the young men shipping out. You needed to ride that high just a little longer, and you guessed he did too.

You continued down the sidewalk together toward your home. When Shifty took your hand, you looked back on the last few months of dating him, and your smile widened. Which should have been impossible since your cheeks were aching from the joy you’d shared all night. 

You’d moved to this small town to escape your family, and you knew they’d never suspect you went there. In your first week, you met Shifty Powers, and he’d bashfully asked you to dinner. You thought it was to be an intimate dinner, so when he brought you home to his mother’s house, you were shocked. But his family was as kind and warm as you could ever imagine, and they welcomed you. His mother even joked she was impressed that a girl as pretty as you liked her Darrell. But you did like him. As you continued to see him, you liked him even more. The first time he kissed you, you knew that this was the man who would be your husband one day. 

You stopped together at your front door. He leaned down and placed a chaste kiss to your lips. You hummed with contentment, but your heart begged for more. 

��Goodnight, darlin’,” he said sweetly. 

You held his gaze, and could not deny it any longer. 

“I love you,” you blurted out.

He blinked, taken aback. “Y-you do?”

You nodded, heat pooling in your belly and rising to your cheeks. 

“I’m not just saying it because you’re leaving tomorrow, I swear,” you told him. “Really, I love you, Darrell.”

He smiled and looked shyly at the ground before meeting your eyes again. 

“Well, I love you too,” he said. “I can’t help loving you, darlin’.” 

You beamed and pulled him in for another kiss. A deeper, longer kiss that told him just how profoundly you felt it. His arms enclosed you by the waist, and yours coiled around his neck. You only broke apart to breathe. 

“Would you like to come in?” you offered. “And maybe...stay the night?”

It should have been scandalous, but it wasn’t. It didn’t feel wrong to extend that invitation to him.

“Are you sure?” he asked, searching your face for any hesitation, but he found none.

You nodded. “Like I said. I love you. And I’d like to show you just how much.”

He flushed, but did not look away now. He pressed his lips to your forehead.

“Yes, I’ll stay,” he whispered. “But will you promise me something?”

“Anything,” you replied. 

“Marry me when I get home,” he said. 

“You got it,” you said through an elated smile. 

After one more kiss, you took his hand, and led him inside. It didn’t feel like goodbye. It felt like the beginning of forever.

1. Tell us about your current project(s) – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

these are all andyeddie (i’m Basic) When It Rains It Pours, the post-war happy ending I’ve been working on for three fucking years, is almost finished. what I love most is it’s?? my greatest work tbh, it’s my wwii gay romance novel flex of a fic... they’re gonna end up happy and in love and i’m so fucking stoked

second one’s The Church of Saint Andrew, where Eddie’s immortal but Andy keeps getting reincarnated. which progress is really good on, it’s just easy to write for some reason. maybe cause it’s about 12 different eras, you can’t get bored?? and they’ll all compartmentalised. i love the response i’ve got to it most, certain individuals are vibing to it and i love that

there’s more but I swore I wouldn’t post them until at least one of the above is done and dusted, though i’d chuck up info about them if asked

2. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project

I have 2 (two) of the hottest andyeddie modern AUs popping off in my drafts and I’m so stoked for like 90% of the scenes in them... I’m simping, bro, I have yet to write modern!andyeddie

recently it’s been sit at work -> get really inspired -> pull out phone to make quick notes (then a customer walks up lmao kill me)

14. At what point in writing do you come up with a title?

about to give evidence to the duality of man here but, either i have it from the very beginning OR i get to publishing and i’m still doing the dinner plate over it (the face where your teeth are gritted and you’re making a hhGGGGHHHHH sound in frustration like you’re biting down on a dinner plate)

sadly enough i’m actually not all that big of a queen fan, like obviously i have the big numbers memorized like EVERYONE else in the world ;) but the rest was dad’s music, he had the records and would be the one to play them. my poor dad, he tried to pass on good music taste to me but while i obsessed over ALL my mother’s music (earth wind and fire, loreena mckinnet, natalie merchant, simon and garfunkel, sade, carly simon, enya, fleetwood mac, the list goes ON) the only CDs of my dads that i ripped to my computer and listened to on repeat non stop was Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds. Yeah. it baffled my dad so much. like he introduces a twelve year old to nirvana, NIN, blue oyster cult, iron butterfly, and the one i fall in love with is the ‘oooooooooLA!’ screaming aliens.
