mr and mrs graves loved how quiet [reader] was as a child. she didn't make any noise, didn't talk at all, and was overall easy to overlook. the perfect child! why not have another? when andy came out the cursed womb, he was the same and probably learned to keep quiet too via [reader], his big sister. what's the harm in one more child? mrs graves would then learn the harm in having another child that is NOT quiet. leyley came in and couldn't be as quiet or put away as her older siblings, but thankfully this isn't [reader]'s first rodeo in taking care of a child... she's not good at it though (which makes sense cause she's fucking four years old)

andy and leyley are still very close together, especially leyley to andy since she's closer to andy's age (and goes to school with him longer) than [reader], but they both look up to [reader] as a mother figure. leyley had trouble dealing with [reader]'s quietness/muteness but her patience for leyley makes up for all the frustration she goes through. she definitely expects [reader] to pay more attention to her because she's the baby of the family, their little baby sister. how is she supposed to know shit if no one is there to teach her? how is she supposed to feel safe if no one is watching her? damn, she fucked up breakfast again even though andy taught her how not even a day ago, thankfully [reader] is there to make it for them, right? andy doesn't mind [reader]'s quietness. he's so used to leyley's loud and impulsive nature that having someone who's quieter and more mindful is appreciated. especially since she's older, andy sees her as the perfect role model to look up to.

i doubt the apartment they lived in had a yard but they do have a balcony, so i think [reader] would grow herbs and plants that can grow in pots (like strawberries and tomato plants). andy and leyley would pick up some things from watching [reader] take care of them (though they might've killed a plant once from forgetting to water it). [reader] would try her best to teach andy and leyley about taking care of the plants, what they're used for, how to prepare them into meals, etc and it would give them (specifically andy) such an oedipus complex. having [reader] comfort them when they're mad, staying patient and calm when they get frustrated and yell at her, hugging them when they're sad, UGH just being such a good mother figure and a big sister. andy loves hugging her, feeling safe in her arms. as they grow up, they both get very protective over [reader]. she can't date other people! it's a tad bit hard to enforce that since [reader] is two-four years older and usually aren't attending the same school as them for very long. they usually try to make it as CLEAR as possible to her current partner that they do not like them. andrew is very passive aggressive towards them while ashley is just... aggressive. [reader] gets mad at them the first and second time, enough for andrew and ashley to feel a little bit bad, but eventually [reader] just stops trying to date people (or at least bring them over to the apartment). she can't be too mad at them, they're probably a little bit scared to share their big sister with a stranger...

quarantine isn't so bad to them. [reader]'s little balcony garden helps them not starve for a little bit longer than canon, but not by much. andrew and ashley are both grateful to [reader] for trying to keep them all alive, but it's not a burden that she has to shoulder on her own. seeing the cultist, killing the wardens, escaping the apartment-- all very stressful things that they help [reader] through. andrew sleeps with [reader] some nights and holds her close. maybe even snuggling closer to her chest... after all, [reader] holds some power over him, no? she's older, if she is uncomfortable with it then she can just tell him to stop. he likes being the middle child. having the power and control over ashley but being watched over and taught by [reader], having both that dominate and submissive dynamic with his sisters. would definitely call [reader] mommy after they kill their parents

i find it kinda funny that the demon gives ashley a clairvoyant trinket and [reader] altered sight but doesn't give andrew anything. poor guy. i think [reader]'s true sight would honestly alter the dynamic of the graves' sibling relationship. if she can see the true intentions of people/seeing if they're lying than surely she would be able to tell when andrew is holding himself back and repressing his affection or can see ashley's overwhelming insecurity. would she play into these feelings? anyway, andrew and their parents were shocked when [reader] actually spoke when in the basement, especially when it was against mrs graves? like omg... boss moves, you know?

Hey guys! Did you know that Super Mario Bros. 2 was originally a reskin of a game called Puck-Man, but they changed the name so people wouldn't vandalize the cabinets and make it say Q*bert? Anyway here's Grass

I hope you like Grass. I hope there are some ruminants among our readers who get so hyped upon seeing a depiction of grass. But I don't care about the grass itself. I care about what's underneath... Funny Vegetables! The kind to throw at a Shy Guy or a Tweeter! Let's look at each Vegetable's NES and SNES design, and discuss them!

Turnip is the most iconic of the These Vegetables. Not the most iconic vegetable, but the most iconic Mario Vegetable. It's the main one that gets referenced, reappears as of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and is even part of Peach's Smash moveset! Where they make even more variants that I don't feel like getting into here for the sake of post length. I quite like Turnip's classic brow(s), though they would be removed, along with the mouth, in future iterations. Such is brand identity.

In Minion Quest and Bowser Jr.'s Journey, Shy Guys' main method of attack is throwing turnips! I like that a lot. It references their debut and is just a very whimsical thing!

I would expect to pull up a turnip from the ground, but lookie here! A couple of Fruits. It's unclear if these are pumpkins or bell peppers, and they come in red and green, which are both options for both fruits! Neither of the options, however, grow underground, so maybe they were playing hide-and-seek. It would explain their surprised expressions! They thought that was such a good hiding place, and it was! Also, I am not averse to calling these fruits vegetables. "Vegetable" is just a culinary term, referring to a part of a plant that we eat! Every fruit is a vegetable. Blueberry pie is a Vegetable Dessert. Words are fun!

Beet is the happiest vegetable we've seen so far! But oddly thin. I hope it's not malnourished! If it is, it's still optimistic, and that's commendable. Maybe it's happy because it was voted Most Likely To Be Pickled in the vegetable high school year book! (Cucumber was homeschooled)

Beet was so thin, and now Parsnip is so wide! It feels like their colors should have been swapped, maybe. But a Parsnip Muncher would delight in having so much more to munch here! A parsnip you could eat like an apple! I am not sure what Parsnip is thinking, with its very neutral expression. If I had a nickel for every time I couldn't tell what a parsnip was thinking, I'd be rich!

Tomato is my favorite! It's SO happy! The biggest smile around! So happy to be a tomato! Maybe it's thinking about how everyone loves tomatoes and how versatile they are! Maybe it's happy because THIS fruit is never buried underground- this and the following vegetable only appear from the Dream Machine during the final boss battle against Wart. I guess Wart doesn't like tomatoes. So not everyone does... but phooey to him, because he's a Bad Guy! We goody two shoeses love Tomato!

Finally, last but not least, is a quite interesting vegetable! This one is a bit mysterious, a bit ambiguous. Ambiguous whether it's an onion or a garlic. Ambiguous whether it's wearing thick glasses, or it has wide, pupilless eyes. I'm going to claim this vegetable as non-binary, and also establish "onion/garlic" as a binary. And then all humans will become non-binary...! What I can be sure of is that this allium looks like a nerd. "According to my calculations, my presence serves to enhance the flavor of any culinary delight!" Ok, dork! I love you.

Flufftober Day 8: Pumpkin Contest

~At your insistence, Wakatoshi takes his prized pumpkin and enters it into the city’s annual largest pumpkin contest.

Damp yellow leaves stick to the sides of your boots as they crunch along the gravel path leading into the large and extremely well-maintained backyard of Wakatoshi Ushijima. Although your boyfriend is one of the nation's top athletes, he still takes the time to diligently tend to his ginormous garden. In the height of the summer, his backyard was overflowing with green abundance, and he enjoyed spoiling you with harvest baskets and farm-to-table dinners regularly. 

But now, as the weather turns colder, his beloved plants are yielding that last of their fruits and vegetables, and their vines begin to wither, making the space look rather dreary. You find the 6'3 wing spiker underneath one of his impressive plant trellises, plucking the little red and orange fruits from the fading vines. He has a small, content smile on his face as he places them into the wooden harvest basket you bought for him at the farmers market not too long ago.

"Oh Y/n, you're early," he says, noticing your presence. Despite his reserved words, you can tell by the joyful light in his olive-colored eyes that he is overjoyed to see you. 

"I am," you say with a smile, "I thought you could use an extra hand in the garden before it rains tomorrow."

"Well, thank you, I appreciate the extra hand." He gently presses a kiss to your chilled forehead and looks around the thinning garden in thought, not wanting to stick you with some sort of terrible task. "I suppose if you would like to you could plant some garlic in this bed I have cleared out."

You nod, thankful for the task, "I'd love to." Curiously, you try to peer into his basket with little luck, "What do you have there?"

He frowns and shows you the basket, "The last of the tomatoes. It's strange that only a month ago, I was struggling to keep up with picking them all, and now this is all that is left out here."

"That is crazy; what are you gonna do with them?" you ask; despite his disappointment, there is still a decent amount of tomatoes in his basket. 

"I was thinking of making us some soup for dinner," he says thoughtfully, "would that be something that you would like?"

The idea of some garden-to-table tomato soup makes your mouth water, and you find yourself agreeing with him. You start to walk over to the empty planter box when something large and bright orange catches your eye. 

With his garden mostly clear, you realize that you had never checked the back corner of the lot, where there are large green vines still growing strong from the ground. And sitting atop the lives is the largest single pumpkin you have ever seen.

It looks like something straight out of a magazine cover, and you have to reach out and touch the cold, dewy, surface just to confirm that it is, in fact, real and not some oversized Halloween decoration.

"I see you found my pumpkin patch," Wakatoshi says, coming up behind you. "I really tried to grow some, but this one here was the only one that grew because it took up all the space."

"It's amazing," you murmur, your eyes never leaving the large fruit. "I've never seen one so big. Have you ever thought of entering it in one of those Big Pumpkin Contests?"

He shakes his head, "It has never crossed my mind, if I am being honest."

"Would you?"

It's contest day, and after loading up the pumpkin that Tendo affectionately named the Big Orange over Facetime last night into the back of his truck, you have arrived at the square for the city's harvest festival. People flood the square dressed in warm-toned flannels, looking like they just popped out of a Hallmark movie. 

"Do you really think one of my pumpkins could win a contest like this? Wakatoshi asks, staring down at the application you had just filled out for him earlier today and thrust into his hand. 

You nod. You may not know much about pumpkins, but you do know your boyfriend; he cares deeply about his plants, and he works hard. He has a natural tendency for greatness that you wish others could see applies to more than just volleyball.

Not to mention, the winner of the contest would win a trip for two to a spa resort in the mountains and that would make for a pretty sick getaway.

You watch as your sweater-clad boyfriend grabs one of the faded blue wheelbarrows set aside for the contest. His cheeks are a bit pink from the cold, but he looks genuinely happy to be there. He easily slides the orange monstrosity onto the metal cart with his near-inhuman strength, and you stare at him in wonder. Without so much as a grunt, he begins to push the wheelbarrow into the square. 

"Where do you think we take it?" you ask, struggling to keep up with his long strides. He notices it and slows down a bit, despite having to carry such a heavy load with him.

"I'm not sure," he says, "but I think I know who to ask." He walks over to a man with short light grey hair tipped with black, wearing a bright orange lanyard. 

The vaguely familiar man notices your approach and politely smiles up at your boyfriend. 

How is it that you can hardly keep up with him even w

You run into someone who looks vaguely familiar, but you don't know who they are. "Ushijima, what brings you here today?"

"Kita, Hello," he says, gesturing to you and the wheelbarrow he is pushing.  "My partner and I wish to enter our pumpkin into the contest today."

He nods, "I see, that is an impressive pumpkin. The two of you must've put a lot of hard work into growing it. Sign ups are over by the yellow tent. Good luck in the contest."

He walks away, and you look at your boyfriend. "He seemed nice; where do you know him from."

"Volleyball," he says after a moment. "I believe he was captain for Inarizaki in my third year."

"I see," you check the time on your phone. "We better get signed up; the contest will be starting soon." He nods and follows behind you as you lead your way through the crowd to the tent. 

A kind-looking older woman runs the tent, greets you with a smile, takes your completed paperwork, and explains that the pumpkins will not just be judged on size but weight as well. After which she instructs you to pin a number to your wheelbarrow and leave it next to her tent so the committee can pick it up for unbiased judging. 

After abandoning Big Orange at the booth, the two of you enjoy the festival, and although the contest doesn't seem to cross his mind, you can't help but wonder how the pumpkin will score.

"What do you mean we got last place?" you ask in disbelief, looking down at the rows of pumpkins. Big Orange sits at the very beginning of the line, meaning that out of all the entries, it was the smallest.

"I believe it means that all the other pumpkins were both larger and heavier than ours," he says, taking your last statement a bit too literally. His unintentional sense of humor makes you feel much better about the whole thing, and you find yourself laughing. 

"Aren't you at least a little disappointed?" you ask him teasingly. 

"Why would I be disappointed?" he answers. "Pumpkins can't train or intentionally build muscle; they can only grow depending on their genetics and how diligently they are nurtured."

His answer is logical, but you can't help but feel there is more to it than that. There is no way someone as naturally competitive as Wakatoshi Ushijima would just give up after one defeat. 

"That being said," he continues, looking at you as passion and intensity light their usual fire in his normally steady gaze. "I do not wish to lose this competition again, so I would like to ask the other farmers what they did to produce such superior fruits." He starts to walk down the line of pumpkins only to stop and realize that you are still standing in front of not-so-big orange. And hold out his hand.

God, you love him.

You rush to take it as a smug smirk tug at your lips as you realize you may have just created a monster.
