For those of you who don’t know how book publishing works... it’s a very different process than TV. (Obvi!) This is the Advanced Readers Edition (AKA an ARC, the Advanced Readers Copy) of The Secret History which came out in 1992, meaning it was not the final version of the book (as it had probably gone through only one round of edits and had not been proofed by a copyeditor yet.) An ARC (or galley as it’s sometimes referred to) is used as a sales tool, something that the publisher sends out for reviews, to bookstores, to other authors to get “blurbs” for the final book jacket, etc. And since it’s a marketing tool, all book galley copy is written in the same way... heralding the new book to be the greatest thing ever, blah blah... so it’s like a movie trailer... used to get people excited. BUT, what’s so interesting about the sales copy on Donna Tartt’s galley (which I just got, I bought it from Biblio.com when I bought the first edition copy for our home library) is that the advanced praise/hype of her book was all true. It was exactly what was said... an incredibly impressive, beautifully written first novel that went on to be one of the most successful books of the early 90s. My husband and I both remember reading TSH back in the day (before we were published authors) and were equally blown away by it. It took her 8 years to write it, and it showed... It was daunting to read such an incredible first novel, but also inspiring!
