Chapter 135 spoiler (part 2)

Gear says to Yumikage that he looks just like Shirayuki and Yumi says that Gear looks like his friend.

Gear: "Did he mean my descendant?"

Me: Yeah man, he looks like you, and I'm looking forward to meet your cute great great great grandson and like, you can spoil him, maybe give him consoles and other devices xD Tsurugi has a rich grandpuppy :D

Alright, so Shirayuki mentions how Gear's descendant could only be from the lineage of that woman he saved.

Gear saved a woman's life by giving her some of his life force, literarily he's saying that he mixed his life with hers. Although it wasn't explained how, I can only assume that it's through biting or having the person drink blood, since werewolves can't reproduce according to Pisca in chapter 104.

I want to mention that in the official English translation it's mistranslated and Pisca says "I've heard that he (Tsurugi) didn't inherit any werewolf abilities"

Like that is so different from the original text...

Gear isn't just Tsurugi's grandpa, he wants to be his friends' children's' grandpa too :))

Shirayuki, when things calm down, I'll reintroduce myself again to your son(s), as a grandfatherly figure.

Okay but I'm wondering about something. Like I think Shirayuki knew about the rumor regarding Tsurugi possibly being Gear's descendant, since she was the former manager of Tokyo C3.

Yumi remarked how Gear looks like Tsurugi and Shirayuki must have noticed too. When they were in high school, Yumi was told not to get involved with Tsurugi, but it could be that Shirayuki wasn't totally against them being friends because maybe she did see the resemblance and possibly, Yumi was like her in her youth when she met Gear and became friends. It would be interesting if it showed this, because maybe Gear wasn't referring just about looks, but maybe attitude as well, when he said that Yumi is just like Shirayuki.

In regards to this fic

I do! For some at least. Stupidly, I didn’t write all the combinations down, so this is what I remember and managed to scrounge from searching chat logs. I also have their flower combinations all set to go, and some of the placements as well

So, a couple things to get out of the way before I go further. My soulmate au plays with a few different concepts, one of which being that your soulmate isn’t necessarily the person that’s best for you, or a romantic interest. That your soulmate can in fact be someone who is objectively bad for you

This is the case with Touma and Tsurugi, who sport bird of paradise (Touma’s flower) and white camellia (Tsurugi’s) Tsurugi’s mark of placed on his calf so it’s difficult to make out because of Higan’s little “painting” he did. Touma’s is on his back in a spot that’s difficult to see without a mirror. Easily perceived by others but not himself. I chose the white camellia for Tsurugi because it means “waiting” and the bird of paradise for Touma because not only would he hate it, his symbolic animal is the peacock!

Higan and Licht are another pair like that (red spider lily and lily of the valley) Licht’s is on the inner wrist of his left arm (astute readers might notice this is the arm Jeje shot) usually covered by the sleeve of his hoodie. Higan’s is on the back of his left hand, usually covered by his gloves.

Tsurugi’s soulmate is Touma, but he chooses his friends

Licht’s soulmate is Higan, but he rebels against ‘destiny’ and chooses Lawless to be his shadow

Misono and Lily are another duo, white rose and white lily. Misono’s is on the bottom of his foot, while Lily’s is on his stomach

I don’t remember where I placed Gear’s but I do remember that he and youtarou have lupine and cotton, and that Youtarou’s is on the back of his neck.

Lawless has his on his tongue, olive and clover, while Ophelia’s is in the hollow of her collarbone. His literal one and only.

Jeje’s is on his cheek and Mikuni’s is on the left side of his rib cage, just under his heart, the place you’d choose to slip a blade between someone’s ribs. Red anemone and yellow roses choked with thorns.

Kuro is the third flower for Mahiru, of course! Ash blossom. His mark is on his hip, a place Mahiru wouldn’t really be looking lol

Okay but I love how much this would mess with a lot of the way the world works though.

Like if you’re an adult and you meet your soulmate as a child, like Jeje would have, there’s definitely an undercurrent of prejudice against that, no matter how the relationship goes. Of course Jeje’s immortal so he doesn’t give a shit, and neither does Gear, but he did have to triple take when he saw Youtarou’s cotton puffs with curved boughs of Lupine framing it on the back of his neck after the little brat managed to find his home

Like the “proper” thing to do would be limit contact with your soulmate as much as possible until they’re a more appropriate age, but what if you’re a teacher and it’s one of your students? Does the student have to transfer out? Be moved to a different class?

What if you find your soulmate through them being on the news for murder? What then? People faking their marks to try and get with celebrities, illegal operations to alter them, the view of relationships outside your soulmate as “lesser” or “doomed to fail”

Siblings being born with matching marks, especially twins like Yully and Mary

Mikuni sees the mark on the bottom of his baby brother’s foot and knows instantly All of Love will not be his partner.

Misono giggles and gurgles while Mikuni beams at him, already so in love from the very first meeting.

Okay, this is like a continuation of two of my theories and I'm wondering if I'm onto something.

So I wondered if the count could have originally been a werewolf based on the fact that he seems to have always been immortal, gear saying that his kind has a technique to seperate a part of their spirit from them while pointing at his earing, that earing looking pretty similar to the pendants the count had on his necklace that seemed to contain the demons (probably sins he seperated from himself) and werewolves apparently being able to create descendants by sharing their life force with humans which apparently gives them and their human descendants special powers, just like the count letting humans drink his blood turned them into mages.

Now the only werewolf we've met so far is (neu)gear hatiwelt, a reference to the wolf hati in norse mythology who swallows the moon during ragnarok (doom of the gods). We even see gear use a technique that allowed him to temporarily swallow the red moon the antagonist have created to aid in the ritual:

In norse mythology hati also has a twin brother though, skalli, who swallows the sun during ragnarok. Could the count play the role of skalli? The preparations for the ritual to bring back the count did kind of block out the sun in tokyo, causing temperatures to drop and snow to fall in summer. Ragnarok too is preceded by a cruel winter:

The C3 tokyo branch uses characters from norse mythology for codenames, which makes it interesting to speculate if some characters in servamp will have a similar fate to their counterparts in ragnarok.

Ragnarok starts with the death of balder, a son of odin, caused by the deception of loki, the trickster.

Shuhei is called loki as a nickname by izuna, but shuhei is more like heimdall, the god of foreknowledge who has excellent eyes. Shuhei's ability to prepare for even unlikely situations is a recurring joke and his hawkeye ability allows him to see far and even through walls.

I think we can all agree that in reality the role of loki the trickster falls on mikuni. He lies, he cheats and tricks to get what he wants, he's charismatic and clever. Before he starts the ritual/ragnarok he kills tsurugi/balder:

This has already happened so the question is if the other characters will suffer a similar fate to their norse counterparts as well.

In ragnarok loki and heimdall end up killing each other, but while shuhei's and mikuni's relationship is complicated and at times antagonistic I don't really see them killing each other, but maybe shuhei will fight a mikuni clone and kill him and be injured by him.

Other important figures in ragnarok are odin and his son thor. We have no official character with the codename odin, but I think odin and touma might be linked.

Touma is currently wearing an eyepatch, meaning he's one-eyed like the wise allfather odin, who sacrificed one of his eyes for knowledge. Say what you want about touma, but he is smart and came close to figuring out how the ritual to create a servamp worked. Balder is odin's son and while they refer to each other as brothers touma and tsurugi's dynamic is somewhere between being father and son and brothers. Odin is also the father of thor and with both jun and tooru too injured to fight and mjölnir now in mahiru's hands I think mahiru can be counted as the new thor and unlike jun or tooru he is touma's/odin's son.

Odin and thor both die during ragnarok. Odin is swallowed by fenrir (a giant wolf and son of loki) while thor battles with jormungandre, a giant serpent, slaying the snake, but dying from the snake's poison only a few moments later.

So we don't know who fenrir could be. If he's not skalli maybe the count is fenrir? In some versions it's fenrir who swallows the sun, so I guess he could simply be both.

But maybe whatever I assume mikuni wants to do with tsurugi's corpse will turn him into fenrir? He did seem to want the corpse to be left as intact as possible:

and the corpse was gone when mikado woke up again, leaving only the blood behind. Tsurugi's character is also strongly linked to wolves, so turning him into fenris and having him fight/kill odin/touma would make narrative sense.

Mahiru on the other hand might end up fighting jeje/mikuni. Jeje is currently captured and mikuni was literally called a snake by higan in the most recent chapter so I guess mikuni counts as a snake alone too, but of course mikuni could go and free jeje and fight together with him against mahiru.

Mahiru is against killing, so I doubt he would slay mikuni on purpose, but there are also a bunch of mikuni clones running around right now that NEED to be killed so he could end up using lethal methods on the real mikuni by mistake I guess. Or he simply defeats him and/or jeje through other means. What I'm more worried about is that despite his victory thor dies from the snake's poison only a few moments later.

Thor is also not the only character mahiru has been linked to that dies at the end of the story from the poison of a snake. It's subtle, but both when mahiru was in kuro's mind the first time and later when mahiru and tsurugi's spirits talked with each after touma had shot mahiru he spent some time in a desert with a crashed airplane:

Which is a reference to "the little prince" by antoine de saint-exupéry, a novella that ends with the little prince getting bitten by a snake after the snake promised him it would bring him back to his home planet.

So...will mahiru win the fight, but still die? Hopefully he can be saved from that fate.

i just found out about the reference for gear's last name "hativelt/hatiwelt"

so in one of the panels in the chapter 131, gear said something like:

" My name is that of the moon-eating beast."

and then he proceeds to nom the red moon tsubaki made

this is a reference to Hati Hróðvitnisson, a wolf in norse mythology who chases the moon and eats it during the time of Ragnarok
