As a fan of competitive NES Tetris, I will say this is a good history! GameScout is a community icon and always a reliable source on the subject of NES Tetris.
But I will say no one really knows if Thor actually did pull off level 30 or ACTUALLY hypertapped because no video of it exists and he never participated in the Classic Tetris World Championships (CTWC) iirc. I'd give that credit to Joesph Saelee since he had video evidence. And Joesph Saelee was only 16. By far the youngest competitor in CTWC 2018, as well as being one of the earliest hypertappers; he dethroned 5x champion Jonas Neubauer, so he solidified hypertapping as a legitimate playstyle and was also really the reason so many young players came into the game and innovated it further--they saw themselves in him.
This is in no way to discredit the accomplishments of Jonas Neubauer! Be a 5-time champion in ANYTHING and you will be a legend to its fans. In fact, Joseph Saelee has even said that watching Jonas play is the reason he started playing.
Sidenote: A month or so before his untimely passing in January 2021, Jonas released a video on YouTube teaching Tetris to a fairly well-known Guitar Hero player, who said there had to have been a faster way of playing than tapping every input. This brief flicker of his attempting a new way of playing after this statement is sometimes considered an early version of rolling, which wouldn't have happened without Jonas.
BUT I DIGRESS. How did Joseph Saelee discover the CTWC to begin with?
Boom, Tetris for Jeff.
Jeff was an unlikely candidate to go far in CTWC 2016, but he made it all the way to the finals against, you guessed it, Jonas Neubauer. This was a huge underdog story.
Now, fun thing about the CTWC and other similar tournaments of Tetris is, it has live commentary. One of the quirks of this commentary that someone noticed was the tendency to say "Boom, Tetris for __!" Since Jeff was the big story of that year, someone made a compilation, in the meme-embroiled style of 2016 YouTube, of every time "Boom, Tetris for Jeff" was called by a commentator. To date, it has nearly 800k views, which is quite viral for the subject, especially in the era when maxing out, or reaching the built in scorecap, was rare among elite players.
ALL THIS TO SAY, a real argument can be made that we owe this massive gaming moment that has been covered in the New York Times to a humble 2016 shitpost that I will provide below.
youtube
Boy, I wish Jonas could see how much people who never cared about Tetris before this moment could see how far the game has come.
So apparently the pro-Tetris scene is exploding right now because a 13 year old nerd just reached the game's true killscreen for the first time ever

Just got back from the ATG expo and watching the tetris tournament. it was amazing to see the pro players. also met a lot of cool people. met blue scuti, doge nestris and pixel andy. They were all really chill. also met some of the OG activision devs and the voice actress for peach from the super mario bros super show. all in all it was really fun.

Dear Tetris Journal. Season 3 of the Game Boy Tetris League is underway. I somehow managed to wriggle into the premiere division so itâs much harder this time around.
Just had my first match of the season - against the communityâs resident roller. In laymanâs terms, the guy plays on a computer which allows for more effective techniques than the rest of us (who use gameboys as god intended) can. Which is somewhat controversial but he would be a top tier player anyway.
So of course I got my ass handed to me.
But also I was achingly tired and trying to manage the restream at the same time and I was against a much better player so I donât mind. Just got the inevitable out of the way.
Iâm gonna train up. The rest of the division is either better than me, or equally matched. And I do -not- wanna be bumped back to challengers. I need my moment of moderate competitive success before more nestris players decide to try GB out.

I'd like to point out a historical inaccuracy in one of your posts: while NES-style Tetris (known in modern times as Classic Score Attack) is not played as a contact sport and thus does not make use of T-Spins as a fighting style, the technique is a niche but important part of high-level strategy and has been since its inception.
i get why you would say this to me but i didn't say tspins are not used in nestris... take it up with fr, perhaps

What's your highest score (and preferred version) of Tetris? And if you have one, your best time (and difficulty) of Minesweeper
Mild Tetris infodumping time!! :D
TL;DR: I prefer TETR.IO, where my sprint PB is 25.612 (811th global as of writing), Blitz PB is ~435K (not top 1K also just a lot of SDPC looping). I also do not have any best times in minesweeper (yet :3)
ngl i'm realizing most of what I put here is unrelated to the ask but uh um uh
The vast majority of the time, I am playing either on Jstris or TETR.IO. Both of which aren't technically "Tetris" and are unofficial browser-based clients.
Within both of these I normally only play sprint / 40 Lines (very self-explanatory, clear 40 lines as fast as possible). Most of the time I'll just constantly play sprint without really thinking about it while I listen to a YouTube video or go through an album or smth. Unfortunately tetrio doesn't keep track of my total completed sprints but jstris does, and the number has climbed to be just a little high (3,148 as of right now). There are also other modes but they range from slightly to vastly less popular and I've played 40L by far the most sooooooo-
My PB is 25.465 seconds which is very good according to this graph :3
(Jayson is my other name ignore that part)
Also also also fun story my PBs in 3 of the 4 sprint categories on jstris I got within a few hours (I got a 100L pb on that day but improved it later đ)
Also this is even more unrelated but I feel like mentioning; tetrio and jstris play largely similarly but with minor differences to DAS and finesse but I've had someone try to die on the hill that tetrio finesse is better which is rather silly of them in my imo
uh um there is Blitz mode on tetrio which i don't play often cause it requires too much mental attention and also a lil bit of luck and also also lots of SDPC DPC looping which is really cool and satisfying but also ngl kinda lame but
(replayed at 2x speed cause 2 minutes is a long time)
Occasionally, I play the default mode on Tetris.com. This is an offical client and generally far more popular. Unfortunately I don't have my high scores saved cause i just switched to a new PC build but my best is around ~700K. I pulled it up while writing since it's been a while and did pretty decent but I really struggle with instadrop gravity
Also worth noting is Tetris 99 since it's what got me into tetis in the first place. I have ~700 hours according to my Switch profile and played around 3,000 games (mostly in 2020). Not really much of highscore to point at with this one except one time I won 10 games in a row which is neat.
(I couldn't find the screencap from the 10 games in a row bit but I did find this which is way funnier)
nowadays I absolutely can not be bothered to play this game cause I've gotten to a point where it is boring and slow and uninteresting and if i want to play a long stressful multiplayer tetis i will go to Tetra-League instead.
I played a bit of PPT and PPT2 but never really got into it, I think my highest rating was around 11 or 12K on PPT.
also I've recently tried playing the mobile app and it is awful and frustrating and terrible and bad and lags a whole lot. my highscore there is like 1.3 million which would've put me far and away in first place in my city, but for some reason it decided that I lived in New Jersey that day so instead I was like 30th.
I got into NEStris at one point and I'm pretty sure my best was a little over 300k but i never put that much practice into it.
most of this was entirely unrelated to the ask but I really felt like ranting :3
#i like tetis#i rarely get to infodump about this because noone cares so i am taking this as an invitation sorry :3#still gotta get around to really learning minesweeper#i really like the word 'also'#Tetris 99#Puyo Puyo tetris#tetrio#jstris#SDPC DPC#oops#tetris#minesweeper#hopefully i don't look too dumb for this rant#I may be cringe but I am free

The game goes on sale often so you could wait for that, I think thereâs a way to select above level 9 on NesTris by holding down the A button while selecting a level (this would apply to both cartridge and emulator if youâre emulating the NA or PAL rom)
I think tetris is really cool, but lately I'm feeling a little discouraged. I really wanna play the classic tetris. Yknow, the one the pros play. Cuz idk, it looks cool and it sounds cool. But where i live, i can't buy a cartridge and I've tried downloading roms but for some reason, it won't let me get past level 9 so... help plz?

Time passes, but apparently my fixation on Tetris doesn't. It's time to update my Tetris journal.
Progress is being made. Or is it? I'm at least getting increasingly better at the GameBoy version. It's harder to get higher scores than on the NES, so I'm prouder of my 422K pb there than the nestris 500k. I'm crawling my way towards top 50 in the GB Tetris discord â the closest thing I know of to official rankings. I'm currently ranked 63rd. It's pretty cool.
The problem is, in spite of my developing preference for the GameBoy version, I still wanna get good at NES Tetris. But I feel like I'm stagnating, still struggling to play lvl 18 effectively, let alone 19.
Nestris objectives to work on:
Getting better at DAS (skill stops, wall charges, etc.)
Maintaining the right headspace (not overdoing it until I turn into a zombie, maintaining focus, etc.)
Stacking for DAS style NES play, instead of letting my GB hypertapping instincts kick in too much.

@tavina-writes said: okay but now you have me curious! I havenât been in the YoI fandom for YEARS but please tell me about the competitive classic tetris au
ADSKFLJKF
okay if you're familiar with the competitive NEStris scene, I first got into it in 2018 so that's the meta that I'm working off of here: i.e., no rolling, DAS is still relevant, level 29 is still the killscreen. if that made no sense to you, don't worry about it. it's fine.
Some actual NEStris context that is important in terms of gameplay:
CTWC stands for Classic Tetris World Championships.
NEStris, or Classic Tetris, is a fundamentally different game when compared to modern (hard drop) Tetris. The stacking strategies in NEStris are less complex since there are less tucks/spins you can pull off. However, it is generally considered to be a more brutal game than modern Tetris due to the way the pieces lock onto the stack as soon as they touch and the Extremely Unforgiving randomization.
DAS (delayed auto-shift) used to be the most widespread method of using the controller. It's also the most accessible way of using the controller.
Hypertapping is a different method of maneuvering pieces -- basically, you're tapping the controller faster than the programmed DAS can move a piece. It is also a very physically taxing way to play.
YOI time: We've got five-time CTWC champion Viktor Nikiforov who is getting real depressed about being at the top. Yuuri, meanwhile, is a modern Tetris certified Grandmaster (which is a Real Thing, respect the grandmasters), but he's also secretly a Classic Tetris nerd. Unfortunately, the first time he joins the CTWC, he chokes and has two embarrassingly early top-outs in the round of 8 before ever getting to play his inspiration and idol, Viktor.
But during the post-competition afterparty, they all head over to Christophe's place and Yuuri absolutely BRUTALIZES Viktor's world record ass in NEStris while he's completely sloshed. It's off-stream and it happened in Christophe's garage when nobody's conveniently watching, so there's no proof. Then he seduces Viktor. Also Yuuri completely forgets about it because he's so drunk.
Anyway it's basically the same plot as the show except with Tetris lmao.
Some other random details that I may or may not make sense to everyone:
Viktor is a hypertapper. That's why some people hate his guts, because they think he's just tapping his way to victory into covering his mediocre stacking strats. These people are wrong, of course, because even though hypertapping gives you a speed advantage, you still need absolutely rock-solid stacking fundamentals in order to be able to achieve maxout pace-- *Yuuri gets hit in the face with a brick to shut up his Viktor speech*
Yuuri is an absolute GOD at tucks and spins. He has never missed an I-spin in his life. Sometimes he'll set up an I-spin on level 27 just to boost his confidence in the endgame.
Yuuri's also a DAS player, and he does center-well setups sometimes. If you've ever seen suitogreentea play... yeah. Good stuff.
Yurio is a roller. Rolling wasn't around in 2018, but now I've decided. Yurio is a roller and he is going to DOMINATE the future--
#the suitogreentea vs jonas neubauer match lives in my brain forever#RIP neubauer LYMYMI#thanks for enabling me tav sorry if none of this makes sense i just REALLY like tetris and also sports anime#yuri on ice#yuri on ice tetris au#lazuli talks

2020 Fic Recs
Okay, I did a fic rec list last year for 2019, and nobody asked for this, but you know what, Iâm gonna do another one. Really the only thing I wanna look back on about 2020 is the fic- bc damn there were some good ones!
Same as last year, these are fics that were completed in 2020. (So no in-progress fics here)
So here goes, 20 fic recs for 2020, in no particular order! And full disclosure, these are all totally different ratings/pairings/whatever.
I tried to tag all the authors who had tumblrs, but i probably missed some, and some of them arenât actually working but hey! the username is there!
Some stucky bc of course
Sharpened Claws by tragicama (Explicit)
Steve Rogers has a unique talent of getting himself into danger. As one of New York Cityâs best homicide detectives, it isnât easy to ignore the constant call of trouble and gore. At least, thatâs what he tries to tell his overprotective and brooding boyfriend, Bucky Barnes, even if he knows it might be a lie.
Bucky is dangerous, gorgeous. . .and a werewolf. As the Alpha of New York City, he is easily considered the most powerful being in the world. But when Bucky begins to lose his control over his shift, he slowly becomes aware of a bond that sends him reeling, and one heâd never thought possible.
But everything is not as it seems. After a homicide case unleashes a sequence of events that neither Steve nor Bucky are prepared for, they soon find themselves entangled with a danger that threatens to rip them apart. With the help of Steveâs partner and best friend, Sam, Bucky and Steve navigate a dark web of pack politics, masquerade balls, and a crash course in what it means to be a pack, even as a greater danger looms. And one that might succeed in ripping them apart.
These Happy Gilded Years by crinklefries @spacerenegades, nalonzoo (Teen)
Steve Rogers, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and mostly happy disposition, had lived twenty-three years in the world with very little to distress or vex him.
( Steve is wealthy and and charming, with good humor and good temper, doted upon by his mother and the highest of New York Society, with no one to ever criticize or say the word no to him. Well, other than Bucky. But he doesn't count.
He is also warm and friendly and has a talent for matchmaking. Or so he thinks. Actually, he's kind of terrible at it.
Importantly, Steve will definitely never fall in love or marry, himself. He tells everyone this, repeatedly. Well anyway, we'll see about that. )
Jane Austen's Emma, but a little gayer, set in 1890s Gilded Era New York City

MS: You were with him the most throughout the course of events, both before and after. Your account could shed light on something we may have missed.
JB: What difference will that make?
MS: It could make all the difference. Captain Rogersâ case is unprecedented, heâs the most intact victim weâve ever recovered-
JB: [laughing] You call that intact?

"You say the Warhorse showed up last night," Sam said in tones of profound doubt.
"Yeah," Steve replied.
"The Warhorse. The Warhorse of legend. Daelland's Warhorse."
"The same as the one on the back of the transit card, yes."
"And he appeared in your living room?"
Steve eyed the Warhorse, very large and very black and giving him a dubious look out of his strange grey eyes. "He's standing in it right now."
"Uh huh," Sam said.
"Hey, I'm not any happier about it than you are."
* * *
Steve's mom had left Daelland long before he was born, following her heart to New York, but she'd raised him on stories of its famous Warhorse. Before she died, he'd promised he'd go back and learn the country she'd come from.
That was why he was in Daelland. Not so Daelland's legendary Warhorse could appear in his living room. But planned or not that's what had happenedânow Steve had to figure out what to do about it.
a hat, a horse (a Hyundai), and the will to ride by elkane @elkane, synonym4life @synonym-for-life (Explicit)
After Steve and Bucky rescue their pals from the Raft prison, they decide to dig deeper into Zemoâs involvement in the UN headquartersâ bombing which sends them on a backpacking trip across select European countries. Steve and Bucky believe this is a story about their mission. Scott Lang and Sam Wilson, who join them halfway through, believe itâs a story about their Eurotrip (and theyâre probably right). This writer, however, has been waiting to tell you that the ficâs true mission is Steve and Bucky missioning towards missionary.
Follow them on their journey across Europe in tiny cars, packed subway trains and even on skis as they tumble down the Swiss Alps (in a fun way this time!), all the while reigniting untold feelings of the past through inappropriate sexual encounters and terrible communication skills.
someday at christmas (thereâll be no wars) by stevebuckiest @stevebuckyinc (not rated)
A mission on Christmas. Not even on Christmas, technically. A mission after Christmas which means he and Steve and the Howlies will be trekking through the tundra towards possible death on what used to be Buckyâs favorite day of the year. Jesus Christ.
(alternatively: bucky and steve try to make the best of a shitty situation)

It felt like he⊠It felt like they were always so close. Everything seemed like it was under control. He remembers hearing Wandaâs voice, seeing a flash of red out of the corner of his eye. He remembers yelling something back at her, telling her to stop, to not come any closer. He remembers a bright flash, then a boom, and ringing in his ears. He remembers a black blur, and hands on his back, around his waist, thenâdarknessâŠ
After the explosion in Lagos, Steve wakes up in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, and all he knows is that Bucky's the one who brought him there. While Sam, Nat, and the other Avengers try to figure out what happened to their friend, Steve takes the time away to healâboth his relationship with Bucky, and with himself. My cozy, romantic, and introspective Civil War rewrite.

âWhat a nerd.â
Barry had been haunted by these words all his life, seeing as they were his soulmateâs mark. It came out during puberty, just like everyone elseâs, but by then he was already well on the way to being a ânerdâ so to speak. He wasnât just some guy claiming to be nerd because he was into Dungeons and Dragons or anime, oh no. He was a bona fide science nerd- went to interstate science fairs and competitions even.

Barry Allen was working at the forensics lab of Central City PD when it waltzes the new transfer from Coast City, Detective Hal Jordan, not just into the lab but also into his life. Thereâs the matter of them being soulmates- but Barry is unconvinced. Science tells him thereâs a likely chance that theyâre just platonic soulmates, so Hal suggests an experiment of sorts: they go on three dates, and then decide whether or not theyâre just platonic, or something more.

There were many potential disasters to befall an average weirdo high school student; when one had an active imagination and a love for John Hughes films, as Jughead Jones did, you sort of assumed you had foresaw the possibilities. Plus, after solving a sordid murder and joining a gang, he really thought he gone through his fair share of teenaged trauma.
Having to fake a relationship to save his best friend from dedicating his life to a mafia and getting punched repeatedly in the process definitely had not crossed his mind before now.
