Bandai America Makes A Virtual Toy Show Appearance On NerdNewsToday

It’s hard to believe that roughly a year ago Bandai America attended the 2020 New York Toy Fair at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, a mere two week before a global pandemic lockdown. The 2020 New York Toy Fair was one of the latest industry events prior to lockdown, so we guess you could say that Bandai America really shut it down.

We are so grateful that Bandai America was able to show off the latest Tamagotchi products, including the then unannounced, and highly speculated Tamagotchi On Wonder Garden, and several then and still unreleased Tamagotchi Original shells!

The New York Toy Fair was canceled for 2021, but there are plans for its return in 2022. There is even a save the date on the official website, it will begin on Saturday, February 22nd through Tuesday, February 22nd. No idea on how the New York Toy Fair will look next year, but a return to some kind of normalcy would be awesome. We think Bandai America will have some awesome toys to show off.

The NerdNewsToday hosted a toy fair of its own on their YouTube channel to continue the tradition virtually this year in spite of the global pandemic. One of their videos was all about Bandai America’s virtual pets! Tara Badie and Cisco Maldonado, both Senior Directors of Brand Strategy at Bandai America join the host to discuss the latest virtual pets that Bandai America has to offer!

Tara starts off with showcasing the new relaunched Tamagotchi Original including the new shells, including the new Marble and Spring Stripes! Initially Bandai America did not anticipate that they would be releasing new shells and still have the Tamagotchi Original in production this long, they estimated it would be in production for maybe 6-12 months. They have caught on to new and existing Tamagotchi fans, and fans love purchasing new shells as they are released. Their plan is to introduce new styles four times a year, this is super exciting to hear, and this does make sense since there are new ones released for each season!

Tamagotchi On is briefly mentioned in the video as the toy that was released two years ago with enhanced gameplay, but Tara mentions thats more for the younger audience. If we had to guess this would just not part of the theme for this given interview.

A question on everyones mind these days is answered by Tara, “why isn’t there just an application?”, Tara explains that applications that even their sister brands have are great, but they do not capture the same gameplay. Children and adults love having something to pick up and experience other than their smartphone or tablet.

Other notable Tamagotchi mentions include the Hello Kitty Tamagotchi and of course the Demon Slayer and Evangelion Tamagotchi’s! These collaborations help Bandai America reach a different core demographic, which are fans of those respective brands. Bandai America is really excited to bring over some Tamagotchi’s directly from Japan to help fans get affordable access to these devices without having to source them and pay a fortune. There is a core audience here in the United States for both of these collaborations that Bandai America has imported in. Tara shows off the four initial Demon Slayer Tamagotchi shells, and the three initial Evangelion Tamagotchi shells. Of course the disclaimer of them being imported in from Japan, and containing Japanese verbiage, but English manual is provided.

Cisco from the Digimon brand shows off the Digimon v-pets including the new version three shells, including the ever popular glow-in-the-dark shell! Bandai America went to Reddit and Twitter to see what shells Digimon fans wanted to see, and this is how they got the idea for the glow-in-the-dark model! Cisco mentions that Tamagotchi is currently beating Digimon at this time but they have time to catch up, keep in mind that the Tamagotchi Original was relaunched a year prior to the Digimon v-pet similar to the original launch back in the late 1990’s.

Some really exciting new is dropped that Walmart will be carrying the Digimon v-pet version three glow-in-the-dark shell this fall! Not much to our surprise, Cisco does not mention the Digimon Vital Bracelet that will be released in Japan next month. Bandai America has made it known that they are very interested in this device being released in North America soon enough.

Lastly, the host asks how long they’ve kept their personal digital pets alive for. Tara informs the host that she was carrying around four Tamagotchi On’s for six months when the device launched. Cisco tends to make some care mistakes with his Digimon, like overfeeding and he admits its a lot of work! Some of these mistakes are intentionally to learn certain characters.

This is actually a really great interview, and one with more content than we would probably see at the New York Toy Fair. Typically at the toy fairs there are not only leaders of Bandai America but brand representatives. This interview allows us to learn more about both Tara & Cisco and their respective brands.
