Chappie (2015)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

I’m man enough to admit I was wrong about Chappie. I was initially dazzled by its special effects and unique approach to the story. I see clearly now. This picture ultimately throws away its potential thanks to a dumb climax and a misguided belief that we care about its criminal protagonists.

What if the first fully self-aware, sentient artificial intelligence was raised by the worst people? in crime-ridden Johannesburg, Deon (Dev Patel) has created Chappie (voiced by Sharlto Copley). Unfortunately, the young robot isn’t being raised by its maker. It’s been stolen by criminals Ninja and Yolandi (played by the African rap artists of the same name): thugs who teach the robot to commit crimes and settle their drug debt.

Chappie begins with a solid idea. When we typically explore the subject of "artificial intelligence", it's either misunderstood until it befriends a friendly child or becomes evil immediately and plots mankind’s extinction. Chappie may be made of metal and circuits but it’s little more than an easily-impressionable child in a body whose strength and endurance exceed any normal person’s. It’s endearing to see it misinterpret the deluge of profanities uttered by Ninja and you’ll grow nervous watching the criminals trick it doing their dirty work. You feel for Deon, who desperately wants to get his creation back.

Along with this unique take on the Frankenstein story, the picture’s got a lot of style. The soundtrack by Ninja and Yolandi fits perfectly with their bizarre vernacular, graffiti-laden hideout and the film's general tone. They’re childish but dangerous all at once. One thing you could never call Chappie is "generic".

As the story moves along, details about it foreshadow trouble. Deon is one of the dumbest scientists we’ve ever seen. He’s got absolutely no sense of preservation whatsoever. He's constantly coming back to visit Chappie and his family despite having guns waved in his face. He never even considers calling the authorities when every sign points towards the former police robot being used to commit crimes. You might say it’s because he’d get in serious trouble with his boss (Sigourney Weaver, doing Neil Blomkamp a favor by appearing but having little to do) but who are they going to believe, the scientist, or the criminals? Even if the seemingly reasonable Amerika (Jose Pablo Cantillo) corroborated their story, there’s no way the police wouldn’t side with the robotics genius!

Oh but it gets worse. In the end, this film is about much more than artificial intelligence: it’s also about ripping off Robocop. With a smidge of transhumanism thrown in. The film’s villain isn’t actually the criminals who have adopted Chappie; it’s Hugh Jackman as Vincet Moore. He's a cartoon character obsessed with pushing his urban pacification robot as the next best thing. One look at it, and you wonder what the hell he’s thinking. It’s a 10-ton, bipedal behemoth that can fly, shoot rockets, slice people up with its saw OR its giant mechanical pincer and is equipped with infra-red sight, a railgun and who knows what other goodies. This beast would feel out of place even on the lawless streets of Escape from New York. Why hasn’t he been shut down yet? Every scene with Moore might as well be set in front of a giant neon sign that reads "evil”.

The strategy seems to have been “introduce an even BIGGER villain so that we forget how unlikable Ninja and Yolandi are. Na-unh. It doesn’t matter how action-packed and explosive the film’s last scenes may be. They’re not enough to make you overlook what happened before, certainly not when they're as predictable as this. It only gets worse from there. It’s a giant misstep following a long trip down the stairs.

It doesn’t even take long to see what’s wrong with Chappie. The signs are all there from the start and no effort was made to deviate from the wrong direction it was headed for. I enjoyed Chappie very much when I saw it in theatres. Now, it’s a little embarrassing to have been that enthusiastic about it. Maybe if you’re a big fan of Ninja and Yolandi, or if you get a kick out of seeing your hometown of Johannesburg in a movie, you’d get something out of this picture. Otherwise, stay away. oh that’s great to hear! i was looking through the prompt list from a while back and the angst prompt #11 ‘are you ashamed of me’ screamed harringrove, and i’d love to see what you do with that :)

They always meet at the quarry, at night, headlights turned off so no one gets suspicious. Steve had offered, months ago, to climb into Billy’s window, but Billy had shut that shit down real quick. He didn’t care how much like a ninja Steve was, Neil was too observant to ever risk it. So they meet down at the quarry.

But the problem is, Steve thinks that means this is the only place they interact. Like, sometimes Steve will wave when he sees Billy at the same time they’re picking up the kids. He might say hi or ask how Billy’s weekend was like he doesn’t already know. But the quarry is their spot. Billy doesn’t know Steve’s address even. 

Billy pulls up beside Steve’s BMW, the lights are off and the engine is killed and he’s just sitting in there. He’s probably looking out at the lake, getting all sentimental because that’s the kind of guy Steve Harrington is. 

Sentimental as hell, but won’t even take him to a movie to hold hands in the dark where no one can see them. No, the quarry is the only place they can meet up apparently. 

Billy takes a moment, digging out a cigarette to light it perfunctorily. He drags the smoke in deep, staring up at the night sky through his windshield. Steve won’t come over here, he never does. Billy doesn’t get it, Wheeler loves to talk about how clingy Steve can be when she gets drunk. But Steve isn’t clingy with Billy, he’s just…doing this for the sex. 

Billy is supposed to be okay with it, having told Steve that he was okay with it. But it’s starting to weigh on him. What are they really doing anyway? Steve could be swimming in pussy, but he’s fucking Billy and why? For how long? 

Billy tosses his cigarette out the window and climbs out of the car to stamp it into the dirt. He scuffs his boots against the dirt and roughly fixes his jacket. He doesn’t bother to smooth his hair or his eyebrows. He doesn’t care how he looks.

Steve looks surprised when Billy pulls open his door harshly. Billy slides into the seat and slams it closed, crossing his arms. 

“Hey, you alright?” Steve asks, already leaning over the center console, one hand reaching out. 

To do what? Caress Billy’s cheek? To check him for signs of a fight? It doesn’t matter. Billy slaps the hand away. 

“Are you ashamed of me?” Billy demands and it’s not what he wanted to say. He wanted to snap at Steve to fuck him good. He wanted to tell Steve he’s moved on. He wanted anything but this. This is…treading into feeling’s territory.

Steve blinks and pulls back, the light in his car snaps off and they’re plunged into darkness again. “What?” he asks, shaking his head. 

“Are you ashamed of me?” Billy repeats and he turns to look at Steve. He can’t quite see him in the dark of the car, but he probably has a dumb look on his face. His lips are probably parted and his eyebrows are all scrunched up the way they get when he’s working through a hard problem. Billy shouldn’t find it cute. 

“Billy I don’t…” Steve trails off and he turns the car on. He doesn’t flick on the headlights but he does reach up to punch the light on, so they can see each other. He looks exactly like Billy predicted. 

Billy looks away, crossing his arms like a fucking girl or something. Like he wants King Steve to define the relationship. “It just sure seems like you are. Like we can’t even be friends. Like even just knowing me in public is gonna tarnish your reputation.”

Hell, even fucking Byers says more words to him on a daily basis. They sit next to each other in English class and he’ll ask Billy about the assignments and compare notes and complain about Shakespeare. Steve won’t even catch his eye in the cafeteria. 

Steve’s mouth snaps shut and he looks away too, down at his steering wheel. His shoulders hunch a little more because he’s always fucking slouching. His jacket crinkles when he moves his arms. “I’m not ashamed of you,” he finally whispers. 

“Then why the fuck can’t we be friends in public, Harrington?” Billy demands and he’s resorted to calling Steve by his last name because he doesn’t deserve to hear his first name coming from Billy’s mouth. 

Steve shrugs and he lifts his hands helplessly. Like he doesn’t know the answer to that. Like he hasn’t been the one drawing this line, creating this boundary. “Because you- your dad. And my dad.”

Billy doesn’t think Harrington Senior is as bad as Neil. Steve has never once shown up with bruises, but Billy thinks he’s worse in some ways. Neil will hit Billy and when he’s done, he’ll stroke his face and tell him he does it out of love. He’ll buy him gifts and hug him and if they win a basketball game, he’ll even say he’s proud. Neil is a monster. But Harrington Senior…

Billy doesn’t know. He probably shouldn’t assume. But the way Steve drives those kids around and hangs around until the last possible minute. Not looking to go home, Billy can guess. He thinks Steve has a big house and not enough love to fill it. He’s aware that Steve tends to run off well before the cops can even think about showing up to a party. Billy thinks. Well. Steve has said his dad is a Grade A Asshole before. 

“You’re friends with Jonathan,” Billy mutters because he doesn’t know what else to say. “And that doesn’t bother your dad.”

Steve’s jaw clenches and Billy can watch his Adam’s apple bob as he swallows hard. “He doesn’t like it, but Jonathan has Nancy.” 

Steve swallows again and when he opens his mouth, his voice is a little thick. “But you don’t have a Nancy. And neither do I. And my dad…fuck.” He presses the heels of his palms to his eyes. “It’s so stupid, I’m supposed to be lucky Steve Harrington with all the money and the hair and the girls and my dad thinks I’m a fucking fairy and he’s right.”

Billy’s heart sinks because he’s always so caught up in himself. In the way Neil will react. In moving across the country because Max let a little something slip. Steve’s life seems so idyllic that he’s almost forgotten what it might be like on the other side. 

“Shit, pretty boy, I’m sorry,” Billy mutters and he turns to look at Steve again. “I just…felt like you don’t want anyone to think we’re friends.”

Steve nods a little and pulls his hands away. He crosses his arms across his chest, wrapping his fingers around his biceps. “We can find a middle ground,” he decides quietly. “Because I’m not ashamed of you. But I just want to make it these next two years until I can get out of Hawkins.”

Billy pauses for a second, swallowing whatever dumb shit he was about to say. Two years? Steve was graduating in a few months. 

“Why two years?”

“Because then you can go with me.” 

Billy sucks in a sharp breath and nods, he looks down at his hands. Slowly, he lifts one of them and reaches over to put his hand on Steve’s knee. He squeezes it tight and breathes out. “A middle ground.”

Steve places his hand on top of Billy’s and it’s shaking just a little. He squeezes it in return and gives him a tight smile. “We can be friends. You just can’t come over to mine either. Even if you’re a ninja.”

Billy gives him a tight smile in return and leans over to press a kiss to Steve’s forehead. “Good. I’m sitting next to you at lunch on Monday.”

Steve grabs hold of Billy’s chin to pull him in for a long kiss. He reaches up with the hand that had been on Billy’s to turn off the light. “Then I won’t have to miss you so much,” he whispers. 

Billy sighs into the kiss and leans over the console and not everything is fixed. But he has a deadline now and he has Steve’s promise to find a middle ground and it’s enough. It has to be.

billy wakes up from a coma in 1990. rings the new year in by opening his crusty eyes.

it takes months of rehabilitation, but after signing a shitload of NDAs and being offered a not insubstantiatial amount of money to pick up the pieces that were his life, he's set loose.

the thing is, billy's now 23. he's an adult, neil is gone, and he's supposed to know what to do with everything. but it's only max, and susan, and their shitty trailer waiting for him back in the real world. and he's grateful, but he's also real quiet. real withdrawn. he can't sleep, can barely eat, never ever goes outside.

he's been home three weeks now and has finally managed to get down a dry piece of toast susan made for him before leaving for her morning job. it's the first thing he can remember eating in days. it's the weekend, which means max will be up in... billy counts down the minutes until she stumbles out in her oversized sleep shirt that billy thinks might have been his at one point. she plops down on the couch next to him and grabs the remote. neither of them say anything, but she knows the routine. the routine that started a week ago, that now has billy hooked.

she might be 18, but she's not above saturday morning cartoons. she flips on CBS and together they wait the remaining minutes before...

teenage mutant ninja turtles comes on.

billy settles in more comfortably, letting his shoulders relax and eyes droop. when he's sitting here with his kid-sister, watching this silly cartoon, he finally feels like he can take a breath.

"they're making a live-action version."

they don't usually speak during their morning ritual. billy looks over carefully but she's not looking back, her eyes fixed sleepily on the screen.

"what?"

"of ninja turtles. they're making a live-action movie, it comes out in a couple months."

billy makes a noncommittal noise, letting his gaze fall back to the television.

"we should go see it." max continues.

billy makes no promises.

"So, can I go now?" Casey asked impatiently, trying to flex his arm. "I've got places to be, slowpoke."

Donnie glared at him, irritated. He seemed even more frustrated that Casey had made that semi flirty jab at him.  "Like where?"

"You know...around." He gave a toothy grin.

"Very specific, Jones."

"I like to think I'm very pacific."

"That's-"

"Actually..." Casey wiggled his eyebrows. "Red wanted to talk to me about something. Maybe a bit more than talk if you know what I mean..." He shrugged. "Can't exactly blame her. I'm a catch."

'We aren't there yet, Jones.'

'Is it about April? Because it's not my fault, she ...y'know likes me more.'

Donnie's heart plummeted, dropping the scalpel he was holding. It crashed by his feet loudly, but he didn't bother picking it up.  "You better go then." He said coldly.

"Just leave!" He snapped. "Can't you tell I'm busy? I've got retromutagen to work on."

"Jeez, okay. Don't get your tail in a knot." The teen raised his hands in surrender.

Casey stumbled out of the lab, dazed and confused. His arm thankfully didn't hurt anymore, but he still felt a bit uneasy and sick to his stomach. He really just wanted to take a nap, forget about everything that happened and maybe never work with Donatello again. Couldn't that turtle take a joke?

He needed a distraction...

"CJ!" Mikey exclaimed, leaping towards him with a stupid grin on his face. Casey yelped, taken aback by the orange turtle's enthusiasm. At least that was a distraction alright.  "You won't believe this, dude!"

Casey smirked. "You know, I'm starting to think everything is believable at this point. What's up? Did you discover a new pizza joint?"

The smallest turtle looked about ready to explode with excitement. "Nope! Can't tell you yet, bro.  Come on, Leo's explaining everything at the dojo! I'm just getting you and Donnie! I'm ...Mikey the messenger!" And then he was off again, no doubt badgering Donatello.

Casey shook his head, laughing. Though he was somewhat curious about whatever the leader in blue had to say.

He entered the dojo, checking if Master Splinter was behind him. He trusted the old ninja master, and couldn't deny he was a big help...but that didn't stop him from flinching every time they made eye contact. Rats still gave him the creeps.

Raph and April were already there, chatting amongst themselves. Raph was currently practicing opening and closing April's tessen.

"I dunno, it just seems a bit..." He trailed off.

"A bit what, Raph?" April's eyebrows furrowed. "Go on, finish that sentence."

"It's not very sharp, that's all." As he said this, the tip of the fan poked his finger and he let out a squawk of pain.

"Not very sharp, huh?" April swiped the fan back. "Remember this from me: don't judge everything by its outer appearance."

"Touché." Raph waved at Casey, and the pair did an elaborate secret hand shake.

"What's this about anyway?" He folded his arms.

"Beats us." Raph shrugged. "All Mikey said was-" He changed his voice to a high pitched, cruel but accurate impression of his youngest brother. "Dudes you've gotta hear this! I'm gonna cry on the floor if you don't come to the dojo right this second!"

"It must be big if Leo wants to tell us." April said. "I mean, all Raph and I dealt with was the Purple Dragons graffiting a stop sign."

"It was a slow night!" Raph protested.  

"Maybe they saw Karai?" Casey suggested. That was really the only thing he could think of.

Mikey bounded into the dojo, followed by an extremely disgruntled Donnie, who made a big show of standing as far away from Casey as possible.

"What's all this about?" Donnie asked.

The single light bulb above them started to burn out. The team heard shuffling from behind the large tree, and a shadowy figure approached them, stepping into the dimly lit middle area. He dramatically raised his head, looking grim.

"You're probably wondering why I called you here this evening." Leo said, glancing at Mikey, who of course already knew and was wiggling with excitement.

"Well, yeah. Spit it out, already." Raph said impatiently.

Leo ignored him. "Mikey and I encountered something tonight.  Another mutant. We thought we caught them all or made allies with them but..."

"What?" His emerald eyes widened.

"What is it?" Donnie pressed.

"A dragon!" Mikey interrupted. "A humongous dragon! He had razor sharp teeth and claws!" He paused. "Actually he kinda reminded me of Leatherhead but way less friendly."

"Dragons aren't real, meathead." Donnie grumbled. "They're completely made up fictional stories."

"Have you ever seen a dragon before? Huh? Have you Donnie?" Mikey retorted, cloudy blue eyes filled with a sense of innocence that truly believed dragons were real- but also with a stubborn pride to prove his genius brother wrong. A common occurrence between the two youngest brothers.

"No but-"

"See?" Mikey looked triumphedley at Donnie, then turned back to Leo. "Continue,"

"Like I...and I guess Mikey was saying, we know it's some type of reptile. Not a dragon for sure, but something."

"Any distinctive features?" Donnie asked, snark evident in his tone. "There are over 8000 living species of reptiles, so you might need to be more specific."

"Ah, shut up Brainiac." Raph groaned.

"He's got a point though." Casey pointed out. "Not that I'm agreeing with him- I mean...there are like, a lot of reptiles out there."

"We didn't get a close look at it, I'm afraid. We had to retreat. Whatever it was, it was tough."

"And...kinda scary." Mikey said, hiding behind his oldest brother wearily.

"Fear is the path to the dark side, Mikey." Leo said firmly, patting his head. "Don't let your fear cloud your judgment. We can take it on. Just like we always do."

The group stared at the leader blankly.

"Did you really just quote Yoda?"  April said, covering her mouth to stop her giggles.

"Wh- nooo..." Leo blushed, leaning against the tree in a failed attempt to seem casual. "Why would I do that? That's totally ...lame." Clearing his throat, he continued: "Tomorrow we'll hold a stake out to find this mutant. I'm thinking they may have a chance to be an ally. Any questions?"

Mikey raised his hand. "Are you sure we can't have a pizza out instead? I'm not really a fan of steak and-"

"Any relevant questions?"

"Has it done any actual damage?" April tilted her head.

"It looked more scared than anything, actually." said Leo. "That's why I think we can convince it to join our allegiance."

"And if it isn't willing? Suppose it isn't up for prancing through a meadow with us and decides to kill us all?" Raph said. "Because our track record with friendly mutants tends to be a mixed bag."

"You didn't answer my question, did it do any damage?"

Leo chewed on his lip. "So...don't freak out but, it- she- he? Er- they looked very hungry and did attempt to spit on us. With acid. Or venom or whatever." He pressed on, despite the horrified looks of his peers. "It'll be okay! I have full confidence we can handle this as a team."

"So let me get this straight, Leo." Raph said, moving forward to his brother. "You almost got killed by this monster and your next course of action is: let's be friends! Are you out of your shell? That plan works just as well as Casey and Donnie baking cookies together!"

"For once I agree with Raph." Donnie said, earning a very disgruntled look from his brother.

"I didn't say friends, just figure out their motives." Leo mumbled.

"Whatever you say, Fearless." Raph pushed his brother aside roughly. "Good luck with that. I'm gonna check out Bloody Deaths III, anyone wanna play with me? Casey?"

"Sure," Casey felt his phone buzz. An anxious text from his twelve year old sister Riley snapped him back to reality. "Ah...actually can't. My little sister is getting worried. See you guys tomorrow?"

"Yeah, whatever."

"No worries. Older brother duties call." Leo nodded.

"Don't worry Raph, I'll play with you!" Mikey

"So will I." Leo agreed, happy to relax for a little bit. "How about you guys?" He glanced at Donnie and April, the last remaining members still inside the dojo.

"Just a moment. I'll be right there." April confirmed.

"Don't keep us waiting," Raph cracked his knuckles.

As they were leaving the dojo, Donnie felt a tap on his shoulder. Spinning around, he faced the beaming freckled face of April O' Neil.

"Hey!" She said cheerfully, blue eyes bright and curious.

"Er, um, hey!" He echoed, voice raising several octaves as puberty decided to betray him. He was grateful his brothers were in the other room, babbling about the video game Raph found in the dumpster. No doubt they would be teasing him about his failed attempt at flirting.

"I wanted to talk to you." April said.

"About the new mutant? Because I didn't get a chance to see it-"

"No, no." She interrupted, nudging his shoulder playfully. He blushed at the contact. "I meant about you and Casey. Everything turned out okay?"

Donnie fought the urge to groan. Of course it was about Jones. Instead, he bit his tongue, smiled sweetly and said: "He was...okay." he waved his hand vaguely.

April grinned, relieved. "Wow, that's way better than I expected!"

Donnie narrowed his eyes.

"What I mean is, you two are my closest friends. Seeing you two butt heads, act like you hate each other-  it hurts." She explained. "So it's nice seeing my two best buds get along.

'Best ...buds.' Donnie thought to himself, analyzing each word carefully. 'So maybe she isn't interested in him. That boy with his cocky grin and his stupid egotistical-'

"Casey mentioned you fixed his arm up too!"

"Huh?"

"His arm...he sprained it and you patched it up."

He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "Oh, that." He chuckled. "Wait...he told you?"  

"Yeah, he seems grateful but obviously too 'macho' to admit that."

"It wasn't really anything special."

"But it was, Donnie." April's eyes twinkled. "It was a really nice thing to do. I'm just...so happy you two are finally getting along. Thank you. I knew you would eventually!"

"Heh, well you know."

April chuckled, taking his hand as they walked to the pit.

Mikey sprung up from his beanbag chair. "Yuck, did you two kiss?" He gagged.

April rolled her eyes. "Wouldn't you like to know."

Raph pretended to throw up into his bowl of popcorn while Leo just laughed fondly.

"Take a seat you guys." He said. "We're about to start the game!"

"Actually I think I might call in early tonight." Donnie faked a yawn. "I'm so ...tired."

"You? Sleep?" Raph snorted. "If you didn't want to hang out with us, you could just say that. I don't think I've seen you go in your room since you were thirteen, Don."

"That's not true..." Donnie's cheeks flushed.

"Aw, leave him be." April said, grabbing a handful of popcorn despite Raphael's protests. "He needs his rest."

"Yeah, you do look significantly greener than normal, dude." Mikey pointed out.  "So to speak."

"Go get some rest." Leo said, raising a comforting hand to Donatello's shoulder. "That's an order from your leader."

"Well...goodnight then. Have fun." Donnie added an extra fake yawn for added effect, then retreated to the lab when they looked the other way.

Donatello checked his very messy notes, examining each point with precision. If he wasn't exact, weeks, heck, months of research would be a waste. He wasn't going to let anyone, let alone Casey Jones ruin his process. The lack of sleep already made his work sloppy.

"Add the dose of norepinephrine, stir carefully with the calibrated mutagen..." He mumbled under his breath. "Then wait ten minutes before..."

But he couldn't get that terribly charismatic smirk out of his mind. That no nothing, cocky little son of a-

"Focus Donnie. Don't think about him."

"Talking to yourself again I see."

"Gah!" Donnie yelped, practically doing ballet leaps as he grabbed the nearly fallen canister. He turned around to face his older, but significantly shorter brother. "Hamato Raphael!" He squeaked shrilly.

"Ooh using the full name on me." Raph snickered. "What did I do to deserve that?"

"How long have you been here?"

Raph shrugged, poking the bunsen burner. "Eh, long enough."

"Weren't you suppose to be playing that dumb game with the others?"

"Yeah, and we beat it." He said, piercing green eyes staring him down with a sense of judgement. "And I thought you were supposed to be sleeping. Shoulda have known you'd be back in your Nerd Cave." He flicked Donnie's arm.

"Why are you here?"

"Okay, twenty questions, is it against the law to see my baby brother?"

Donnie folded his arms. "Since when do you ever visit me for no reason?"

"Because I'm such a kind, caring brother?" He looked away guiltily. "Who simply wanted to check on you? Is that such a terrible thing, Donatello?" He leaned forward, dropping the act to return to his usual deadpan tone. "Also my motorcycle needs fixing."

"Ah, there it is."

"Watch the snark, I need it fixed soon."

"Fine, fine." Donnie sighed. "I will."

"Good, 'cause Casey and I are gonna hit the streets with that baby." He said smugly.

Donnie wilted. "Jones?"

Raph raised his eyebrows. "Yeah, Casey Jones. Human, dark hair, lots of missing teeth...this tall? Ring any bells? Oh, right. Forgot you and him had this thing going on..."

"It isn't about that." Donnie said quickly. "We...him and I..."

"You know, seeing you two act like idiots around each other isn't gonna help the team out. Even Mikey thinks it's stupid."

First April, now Raph? And apparently Mikey too...

"I don't care about what you and Jones do, it isn't really my business." Donnie cooled down, trying to tame his temper. "And we're trying, truly trying, at least I am to be civil."

"Hmph, yeah right."

"And ...I don't care if you two spend time together. Why should I? We aren't even friends!"

"Okay, okay." Raph raised his hands in surrender. "I'm going to bed. You should too by the looks of it. After my bike is finished, of course."

Donnie grunted.

"And Donnie?"

"Hm?"

"Who exactly are you trying to convince? Me or yourself?"

Donatello didn't have an answer.

Everything hurt. From the depths of her scaly toes, to her ferocious gaping mouth.What was she? She didn't know anymore. A monster? A freak? Any humanity she had left, was a clouded memory and there was no turning back. She struggled to move, still becoming accustomed to her new features. Four legs were harder to maneuver than two, but she made do.

She slivered across the murky water, pains in her stomach growling from lack of proper food. She couldn't recall the last time she had a warm meal. She lifted her head, silver grey eye slits opening. . In what she lost, her human form, her hair, and sense of a normal life- she had gained quite a few things too. A keen sense of smell, for one. Her eyesight had improved too. She had also gained an olive green tail, which helped with her balance.

'As long as I don't need those pesky glasses anymore.' She thought to herself bitterly.  Those horrid things were the cause of her harassment when she was a human. Now she would have the last laugh. They would cower in fear if they saw what she looked like now.

Her stomach grumbled again.

But yet...those turtles she encountered. So tasty looking...so delectable. They would satisfy her pain.

She stared at the mutant's reflection. It blinked when she blinked. It moved its tail when she flicked it.

This was her life now. She might as well make the most of being a monster.

She had work to do.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES / FLAMING CARROT CROSSOVER NOVEMBER 1993 - FEBRUARY 1994 BY BOB BURDEN, JIM LAWSON, NEIL VOKES, ERIC VINCENT AND MARY WOODRING

SYNOPSIS (FROM TMNT ENTITY)

A super storm has recently ravaged the eastern coast of Central America. The Turtles and Col. Blade are on their way to the decimated town of Santa Baloona to help the locals. To get there, they’re travelling in a blimp they absconded with after a team-up adventure in which they defeated Mr. Cadaverous and his Blue Santas.

After fishing the cow from “Bonanza” out of a tree, they set down on the roof of the US Embassy and the Ambassador takes Col. Blade aside for a debriefing. They meet with Professor Daub, an archaeologist. The Ambassador explains that a unit of the US Military called the I-Team went missing somewhere in the Abecero Peninsula and they need to be found. Col. Blade reconvenes with the Turtles and says that they and Professor Daub are deploying immediately for a special mission.

At Mystery men HQ, following a shrunken head/protein shake/ice cream incident, the team receives a top secret call to arms. Apparently, thousands of years ago, there was a highly advanced, nigh-mythical city called Botaquaxal, hidden in the Abecero Peninsula. It vanished somewhere around 948 AD and all attempted expeditions to locate it ended in tragedy, as the investigators all vanished. Recently, a dentist bought an artifact at a flea market and after x-raying it, found "something". That clue incited the Pentagon to send the I-Team into the Abecero Peninsula. When the super storm hit, it caused an earthquake, revealing a lost city. However, the I-Team’s last transmission wasn’t very hopeful, as the radioman screamed about flaming people burning everyone to death.

Flaming Carrot rallies the Mystery men (Screwball, Bondoman, the Shoveler, Mystic Hand, Mr. Furious, Star Shark, the Zeke’s and the Spleen) and they take off in their aircraft, the Flying Wing (after donning sombreros suitable for a Central American vacation). As the other Mystery men take turns flying the Flying Wing, the Shoveler does some meteorological investigation. He determines that the super storm didn’t follow any natural weather patterns but appears to have originated right from the Abecero Peninsula.

Via blimp, the Turtles, Col. Blade and the Professor find the I-Team’s campsite (but only after Raph wails on a saxophone he found in a locker). They investigate and find no signs of life, save some meals that appear to have been suddenly abandoned. The surrounding jungle appears likewise abandoned, without any traces of animals. What they DO find are the personal effects of the I-Team (rings, watches, fillings) sitting atop small piles of ashes, indicating they were incinerated almost instantly.

Searching, they eventually come across the unearthed city. Oddly, all the ancient buildings appear to be made of a strange plastic substance with magnetic properties. As Mikey skateboards the ruins, he spots a tower jutting out of the sea not far from the coast. Spying through binoculars, Col. Blade notices equipment abandoned outside the entrance to the tower, indicating people had recently been there.

They decide to break for pizza and investigate the tower the next day. Sleeping, Mikey has a strange dream about a prospering city, shadowy halls and a flaming man. He’s awoken by Leo’s screaming. Leo exclaims that while he was taking watch, a tiny man made of green flame attacked him. Leo wasn’t lying, as the flaming man pops out of the bushes and attacks again. Leo attempts to cut it in two, but his swords have no effect. Col. Blade pulls out his gun and aims for what looks like a heart in the center of its chest. Blade shoots the heart and the flaming man vanishes. Professor Daub laments that they didn’t try to communicate with the creature. Suddenly, Raph is startled and points to the sky as lights approach.

As the Flying Wing zooms over the TMNT’s camp, Mr. Furious suddenly loses power on all the instruments. He order all the Mystery men to bail save for himself, Flaming Carrot and Bondoman, who stay behind to manually work the wings. Once they glide far enough away from the camp (and the ancient ruins) the instruments begin working again. Mr. Furious sets the Flying Wing down and, after reconvening with the Spleen and the Zeke’s, they decide to hoof it toward the camp.

Meanwhile, the Turtles and Col. Blade are pretty spooked after the buzzing their camp received from the strange plane. The Turtles split up and journey into the jungle to check things out. Raph winds up getting into a tussle with the Shoveler, who proceeds to trick him into jumping off a cliff. Raph lands right next to Screwball, who panics and flies away on his rocket-boots.

Elsewhere, Donatello has a run-in with the Mystic Hand, who scares him off with his flying, disembodied hands. Star Shark rolls into camp and meets up with Col. Blade. Recognizing the Colonel as an American soldier, the Mystery man explains everything. Raphael, meanwhile, has begun trailing another green flame-man. The flame-man escapes, but leads him to the Flying Wing. Mr. Furious and the Zeke’s are about to open fire when Flaming Carrot stops them. He and Raphael know each other and the two trade information.

Back at camp, all the Mystery men have been rounded up and both groups brought to speed. The Shoveler, taking watch, sees activity off in the distance. Mr. Furious concocts a way to draw all the little green flame-men toward them so they can deal with them all at once. They set the area with traps and drive the Flying Wing and all its weapons near a clearing. They then throw all their green flares into a bonfire, hoping to attract the flame-men. Meanwhile, Flaming Carrot opens a lemonade stand to serve all the thirsty flame-men.

The plan works and the flame-men converge on the bonfire, creating a rainbow in the night with their weird energies. Michelangelo tries to scare them off with a flamethrower, but finds that by feeding flame-men mass quantities of fire, they only get bigger. Luckily, shooting the flame-men in the “heart” still causes them to snuff out and the giant is destroyed.

Col. Blade takes charge and hands out artillery to everyone, including the Turtles. However, it may not be enough as hundreds of flame-men storm the clearing with no signs of slowing down.

In the clearing, the group is struggling to gun down the army of flame-men, but they’re running out of ammo. Suddenly, flame-men reinforcements arrive via river, riding giant leaves. After sinking a few, the Mystery men and the Turtles realize that water can extinguish the flame-men. After cannibalizing the fuel pump from the Flying Wing, they hose down the flame-men and send them into retreat.

In the aftermath, all that’s left of the extinguished flame-men is protoplasmic goop which the Professor describes as being like giant amoebas (and which the Zeke's describes as smelling like Corn Flakes). The Shoveler and Star Shark, who were attacked by the flame-men, say that they weren’t burned but instead drained of energy, like they were being absorbed. Screwball panics when he can’t find his pet shoelace Sherman, but it turns up in a bag of Fritos. In the morning, Mystic Hand, Bondoman and the Spleen decide to stay behind and try to reassemble the Flying Wing while the others return to the I-Team camp and search for more clues. Shortly after they leave, the Spleen sees something lurking in the woods and Mystic Hand goes to investigate.

Fiddling with the I-Team’s radio, the Professor determines that the electromagnetic static that brought down the Flying Wing is spreading out from the ruins and may soon envelope the whole world. They also find Polaroids of the I-Team getting along with the flame-men and keeping them as pets. Flaming Carrot presumes that once the I-Team ran out of things to feed them, the flame-men turned on them. The group decides to head to the ancient ruins, leaving Screwball, Leo and Don behind to guard the camp. Searching the tents, they find one of the flame-men sleeping on a cot.

At the ruins, Mikey recalls the dream he had about the ancient city and follows his memories to a hidden opening in one of the buildings. At last inside the previously impenetrable buildings, Col. Blade orders Star Shark to stay and guard the door while they split into groups: He, the Professor, Raph and Mike will go in one direction while Flaming Carrot, Mr. Furious, the Zeke’s and the Shoveler go in the other. Col. Blade’s group stumbles upon paydirt quickly, finding skeletons of strange creatures, albeit ones with gold fillings that imply a greater intelligence.

At the camp, the flame-man introduces himself as P.F.C. Layton Sykes of Anniston, Alabama. He says that he was once a member of the previous investigation into the ancient ruins. His team encountered the flame-men, who ate anything but plants. When they ran out of food to feed them, the flame-men devoured him and his men. They were absorbed into the flame-men who ate them, merging their consciousnesses. Don asks if he remembers eating himself and, if so, then what do humans taste like? Sykes says “like chicken”.

Back at the ruins, Col. Blade’s team finds a chamber with a hole blasted into it by a flamethrower (indicating the I-Team had been there). Inside are hundreds of glowing eggs, each containing a flame-creature. The Professor joyously announces that they must certainly be looking at beings from another planet.

And at the Flying Wing, Mystic Hand returns with news that he found nothing. Suddenly, a trio of cloaked, spectral figures comes floating their way.

And back again at the ruins, Flaming Carrot’s team finds a huge pod with a glass lid. Inside is what looks like a 9 foot-tall werewolf clad in a jumpsuit and boots. Ignoring their better judgment, they open the pod and release the werewolf. The monster chucks Flaming Carrot, the Zeke’s and the Shoveler out a window and into the sea. Tearing a pipe off the wall, Mr. Furious charges the werewolf.

Mr. Furious dukes it out with the alien werewolf only for the beast to back off once it sees his Free Masonry ring. Being a Mason itself, the werewolf runs away. The Mystery men, the Turtles and Col. Blade eventually catch back up and ask Mr. Furious what the deal with the werewolf is.

Back at the Flying Wing, the Spleen, Bondoman and Mystic Hand are under siege from the spectral figures. The spirits are blasting beams of ice at them, encasing the jet. The Mystery men flee into the jungle with the specters close behind.

At the ruins, the werewolf is desperately trying to communicate with the team via dance, but they can’t interpret him. Don, Leo, Screwball and the flame-creature Sykes show up. After a brief bit of exposition, Sykes has a chat with the werewolf in its native language. The werewolf then devours Sykes and collapses. Star Shark comes down from his lookout post and tells everyone that the Flying Wing is under attack. Leaving the werewolf behind, the Turtles and the Mystery men return to camp.

They reach the Flying Wing, but have no idea what happened. The werewolf then catches up with them and explains everything… in English! He says his name is Chontre Mac and he’s an alien from a planet that exists within the center of the Sun. He says that there are a diverse number of races from that planet and all have the ability to absorb the minds of those they devour (hence how he was able to learn English by eating the flame-creature that ate Sykes). Chontre says that long ago, his people came down to Earth to set up a colony and built this great city. However, civil war erupted and most of his people retreated back to the Sun. Chontre was chosen to sink the city deep into the Earth so that its technology and culture could be preserved, putting himself in cryogenic stasis so he could keep watch.

Chontre is happy to be awake again and, seeing that there are no more warring Sun people on Earth, feels that now is the time to share the technology of the lost city with humanity. Suddenly, Mystic Hand’s disembodied hands float over and motion everyone into the jungle. They find Mystic Hand and Bondoman frozen in cryogenic ice (which Chontre assures them will defrost to no ill effect in a day or two). The Spleen, who fainted, wakes up and describes the ice-blasting specters. Chontre says that the specters are the Eikers, the faction who incited the civil war. When the city was unearthed, it sent a signal into space. Responding to it, the Eikers traveled down from the Sun to regain the lost technology and invade the Earth. The electromagnetic beam that has been shutting off all technology on Earth was a homing beam from their mother ship. Chontre explains that the only way to stop the invasion is to re-sink the city so the Eikers have nothing to home in on.

Screwball then calls down from his lookout post that the Eikers are coming. Chontre says that they’re an early scout patrol. He urges the Mystery men and the Turtles to lead the aliens to the nearby river where the additional humidity will react with their freezing powers and force them to take tangible form. The plan works and with the Eikers finally solid, Col. Blade is able to kill them all with machine-gun fire.

Chontre leads Col. Blade, the Professor and Mr. Furious back into the main hub of the ruined city where they found him in cryo-sleep. Chontre mans the controls to re-sink the city, telling the others to leave so they don’t become trapped, too. The controls malfunction and Chontre laments that the only way to re-sink the city now is for two individuals to man separate emergency controls simultaneously. The Professor volunteers to stay behind, jumping at the chance to go into suspended animation and awaken centuries from now in a brave new world.

Blade and Furious escape the building just as it and the rest of the city sink back into the Earth. Everyone’s electronics begin working again, proving that the Eikers have lost the signal and retreated from their invasion. Col. Blade gives a salute, praising the selfless sacrifice of the Professor.

REVIEW

While I usually enjoy Flaming Carrot, this story seems too focused on the Mystery Men, and while the typical team-up tropes show up, this is a very regular team-up. The Turtles are too normal and I think this drags the story down a bit. I was actually expecting more weirdness.

Not only they are too normal, they are a bit out of character (without their weapons, you cannot guess who they are by reading their dialogues).

The good thing is there is enough weird stuff to satisfy die-hard flaming carrot fans. As I mentioned before, most of my writing stuff is pretty much like Flaming Carrot, so for me, it was a trip down memory lane (but a lane that is not connected to this one).

The art is better than usual for Jim Lawson (apparently color really makes his style stand out more). And at the same time, the Turtles look good with other artists as well. Flaming Carrot looks as good as usual.

In the end, I feel like this story could have gone wilder.

I give the story a score of 5.

Asheville, NC.  Technically, it's Montreat, which is right outside of Black Mountain and is a township unto itself.  It's also home to Montreat Bible College, established by Billy Graham, and the Chapel of the Prodigal.  It is also home to Lake Susan, one of the most quiet and beautiful places on God's green earth, and I would live by that little lake if I could.  I have photos in my Google Drive, I need to share them sometime.  You'll see what I mean.  But I love Asheville, too, downtown and all.

84: Story behind one of my scars? in late 2004, I started getting very ill.  I couldn't keep food down, I was puking all the time, pale and everything, so I went to the ER and found I had a mass the size of a basketball growing in my abdomen.  I was shipped to the local cancer center because of the cancer markers, and at the tender age of 27, I got a hysterectomy.  I was cut from my navel to my diaphragm, old school, because the mass was twenty-four pounds.  Benign, thank goodness, but it had started to go necrotic and I was well into blood poisoning (the reason I was puking and sick all the time).  I still have the scar, and always will.
