Round Three of The Hottest 80s Band Tournament
Rush
Defeated opponents: Bananarama, UB40
Formed in: 1968
Genres: Prog rock
Lineup: Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass
Alex Lifeson - Guitar
Neil Peart - Drums
Albums from the 80s:
Permanent Waves (1980)
Moving Pictures (1981)
Signals (1982)
Grace Under Pressure (1984)
Power Windows (1985)
Hold Your Fire (1987)
Presto (1989)
Propaganda:
"Because how many other bands do you know that have: a frontman who can do vocals, bass, and keyboards at the same time, a drummer who's the lyrical mastermind and writes on a variety of topics (from trees arguing to different spheres of the brain to theocratic dystopias to the Lord of the Rings) and a guitarist who can do three different guitar solos in a single track and is talented enough to have his own signature chord?
They are also beautiful no matter what age (yes, even Geddy's mullet, don't @ me) and have one of the sweetest, most loyal friendships I've ever seen in rock and roll. Example: when Neil lost both his wife and his daughter in the same year, Geddy and Alex supported him and were happy to wait as long as he needed before they started recording again."

No but for real killing Jean like that would be like an objectively bad writing choice. Same thing I think with the Kandreil draft where everyone thought Andreil was cheating on Kevin. There are some previous drafts things I think that are geniunely better as Nora's inside thoughts
it’s not that i disagree with you or anything but the reason i shared that snippet of her saying that in other drafts jean would have committed suicide while ON THE PHONE with KEVIN is that i think it’s deranged. it’s insane. it’s crazy enough to be funny. i’d give everything to read that draft
but on a more serious note: a world where something like that could happen is interesting to me. the way she put it didn’t even seem like jean’s choosing of kevin to witness his last moments was a punishment — instead kevin was, as simply put as possible, the person jean wanted to sit with him while he did perhaps the scariest thing he’s ever done. i think suicide as a theme in a story like aftg might feel as the author refusing to give a character the place or the time to heal, but in this specific situation, perhaps it *was* the choice that made jean feel more at peace with himself. ritualistic, almost, in how he reaches out for the only friend he’s ever had and asks him to accompany him to the other side. the sending off of an old friend, even if i can’t see kevin ever recovering from that phone call
in the end it might not be the dignified ending people would want for a character as beloved as jean. and it’s understandable! really it is. what matters to me is less that it happened in a draft far far far away, and rather what this says about jean and the fact that he thought the only way he could meaningfully show any support or love for kevin was to die. how he was willing to sacrifice himself again and again in every draft because he felt kevin’s & neil’s lives were worth more than his. i think this goes over most peoples’ heads when they consume mostly fanon, but jean was described in the books as having blind loyalty towards riko: when he’s taken to palmetto, he tries to go back TWICE before kevin sits him down and convinces him to stay. you didn’t think i was joking when i called jean a dog, did you?
#asks#jean#kevjean#jean is quite literally the loyal dog in this book because hes been groomed and beaten into that role#he does everything riko asks of him because he knows what the punishment for disobedience is#kevin and neil and renee spark the flame of rebellion in him#but even to the end jean wanted to go back#he doesn’t know anything but#anyway. woof woof doggy

Sparks Fly part 2
Series masterlist
A/n: so sorry this took so long to get out 😭 also the timeline is kinda messed up but it’s 90s!tommy in this story so yeah takes place in the 90s
Pairings: Tommy Lee x Fem!Country Singer!reader
And soon enough you got a call from Tommy. He asked you out for dinner and of course you said yes. You’re so nervous, though. You know of his reputation and how he was with drugs not too long ago. But he’s so handsome and was so sweet you. You just had to say yes.
So, you’re in a light pink dress with peasant sleeves. Your hair in a ponytail with a light pink bow on it. Light makeup adorned your face. You had some pearl jewelry and white kitten heels. As you stood in front of the hotel room mirror making sure everything looked good when you got a knock on the door.
You sighed before shoving your nerves down and opening the door. Tommy stood before you with a grin on his face and flowers in his hand.
“Wow, you look…” he trailed off taking in your whole outfit.
You blushed, “Thanks.”
“Oh!” He said suddenly, jerking the flowers towards you, “I got you these. Wasn’t sure what your preferences on flowers were but thought I’d get ‘em anyways.” You took the bouquet from him and brought them to your nose, sniffing them.
“They’re beautiful Tommy.” You gushed before walking over and setting them on the nightstand. You’ll have to find a way to travel with them without them dying.
Then, the two of you were off on your first date. He took you to this very nice restaurant in Hollywood. Despite you having quite a bit of money yourself, it was way more fancy than you’ve ever been to.
The waiter showed you to your table and the questions began.
“So, I noticed you’re in a hotel…is your house getting renovated or something?” The drummer asked.
“Oh no. I live in Nashville but since I did a few shows here I stayed in a hotel.” You explained the most obvious reason why you were in a hotel.
“Nashville huh? So you’re a real country girl.”
You chuckled, “I guess you can say that. I’ve lived there my whole life. It’s my home yknow?”
“Yeah I can see that.”
It was quiet for a moment before you spoke up again, “So what’s going on with the band right now? I heard you guys laid off Vince?” It was a touchy subject sure, but you really wanted to know what the hell they were thinking when they fired the singer.
“Yeah, but it’s all cool cause we got a new guy, John Corabi. It’s better that way.” And he left it at that.
The two of you talked more and more, all throughout the night. You just couldn’t stop asking about each other.
As Tommy walked you out towards his Ferrari you said, “That was one of the most fun dates I’ve had in a long time.”
“Really?” He looked down at you and raised an eyebrow.
You leaned your head against his shoulder, “Yeah.”
“I’m glad then. I guess I held up to your standards?”
“Haha, yeah. I mean it’s not like I have any to begin with but you’re so respectful and sweet. Not to offend you but you’re a lot different than-“
“The media makes me out to be? Yeah. When I find a girl I really like I make sure to treat her as a queen.” Your stomach fluttered with butterflies.
The two of you got in his car and he turned on the radio but turned down the volume so you could still talk.
“I don’t believe I’ve asked you this but how old are you?” He asked.
“23.” You answered honestly.
“Ok, I’m 31. Was just making sure.”
“I thought you liked younger girls?” You teased.
“I do well- not under 18 girls you know…over 18? Fuck.”
You giggled as he tried to explain himself, “It’s fine. You know my mama told me not to go with older men better yet men in rock n roll bands but, you’re just so…different.” Tommy smiled at your southern accent.
“I’m not the best man in the world, I’ve done some pretty fucked up shit. Maybe not as much as Nikki but…” the drummer trailed off.
You put your hand over his that was sitting on the center console. He looked over at you with those brown eyes. “We’re human, we all do things we regret. That’s just how life works. Imagine if we didn’t do anything wrong, that’d be really boring and no lessons would be learned.”
“I see why you have an award for best songwriting.”
“Yeah, I guess Im somewhat of a poet myself.”

I’m still thinking about the Book of Life because it’s such an obvious Chekhov’s gun. I don’t recall it ever being mentioned in S1, but in S2 it is highlighted twice as a very real, serious threat, and then it’s never brought up again. It can’t just hang indefinitely in the air like that, so I expect it will be used at some point in S3.
But in a way, this threat is kind of hollow when used towards Crowley, because Heaven can’t erase him from history, and they know they can’t. The Fall of Man is such a crucial point in the Great/Ineffable Plan that I doubt they would be willing to mess with that, as much as they hate him. He’s the literal Serpent of Eden! How can the Plan proceed if there’s no one to tempt Eve? The existence of The Serpent is such a core part of the Fall of Man (both in the GO universe and in biblical lore in general) that I think it would be simply too big a risk to take.
From our point of view, Aziraphale is also crucial for the history of humanity until this point. It’s not explicitly stated, but think about it for a moment: would Adam and Eve have survived, had Aziraphale not given them his sword? There’s beasts out there, and it’s cold, and she’s expecting already. We literally see Adam fight a lion with the sword mere moments after being exiled from Eden; I don’t think their odds would have been all that good without it. It’s at least likely that Humanity has managed to survive the Fall and thrive because of Aziraphale’s actions.
Here’s the thing, though: we know this, but Heaven doesn’t, because Aziraphale has been lying to them (and to God!!!) about this ever since the Beginning. What has he done of worth in the eyes of Heaven? Sure, he was guarding the Eastern Gate, he’s been on Earth thwarting demons and all that jazz, but as far as they know, he’s never had a pivotal role in the Plan (except for. You know. Stopping Armageddon. But they didn’t want him to have that role, and they still resent him for it). There’s no reason for them to hesitate, should they be threatened by his existence, because to them he’s not necessary to carry out the will of God (as opposed to Crowley).
So yeah. I think the Book of Life will make another appearance in S3. And, if it does, I think Aziraphale is the most likely candidate as its victim.
#a big part of me would actually prefer to see Aziraphale saving and/or protecting Crowley#as a subversion to their current dynamic#(and also because I love BAMF!Aziraphale and I want to see him furious and powerful)#but also… the book of life has to have a role in S3.#like. it’s used as a threat to spur Crowley into action. but it’s not the actual danger in this season.#it’s just the initial spark? if you will? but the actual threat is the demonic attack on the bookshop#and I don’t believe Neil would use something with such deep implications for the narrative and then just dump it like that#so yeah. it has to come back. and it will come for aziraphale.#it would also be a nice parallel to the whole Gabriel thing. we’ve already witnessed love conquer divine punishment and restore memories#and it would be a cool way to up the ante. we’re not just gonna destroy you with a material substance. we won’t just render you from your#history and identity and relations. we will actually erase you from existence for daring to disobey#it ties everything together and it gives aziracrow’s love a great way to shine#(because Crowley will bring him back#if Aziraphale doesn’t find his way back to Crowley by himself that is)#ineffable husbands#good omens 2

I have a feeling once the Your Friend Logan documentary comes out, the total number of Logan Whitehurst fans will increase from 3 to at least like 4 or 5 once Weird Al and/or Neil Cicierega casually mention the fact they were interviewed in it, causing their fans go to check it out.
#i am a little anxious but at the same time very curious to see how this is going to be received#a surprising amount of Neil and Al fans don't know about this man despite him being one of their biggest inspirations#hes like the sparks of internet musicians#logan whitehurst

I've just finished reading all of the theological essays under my post about Crowley being comforted by his story being written by a human writer who loves him and I have to say, you guys are all very interesting.
Some of you see the God in Good Omens to be separate from God in Real Life. Some of you think it's the same person. Some of you think that God isn't a person. Some of you think that it doesn't matter if God is a person. Some of you think Good Omens God (separate from Real God) can't be good or bad. Some of you think we can't know if Good Omens God is good or bad. Some of you think Real Life God can't be good or bad. Some of you think it doesn't matter if Real Life God (same as Good Omens God) is good or bad. Some of you wonder why everyone else is even asking these questions when we should be focusing on whether we ourselves are good people.
What an interesting fandom this is...

Album Review: Joni Mitchell - Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 3: The Asylum Years (1972-1975)
The six hours of music contained in Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 3: The Asylum Years (1972-1975) is the sound of Mitchell morphing from a folkie from the 1960s to a jazzer of the 1970s.
Comprising demos, studio outtakes, live recordings, alternate mixes and more, the sprawling set is one of those rare collections of ephemera that is eminently listenable straight through and is destined to remain so for decades to come.
Covering the years that produced For the Roses, Court & Spark and the Hissing of Summer Lawns, the box set presents Mitchell clowning with James Taylor in the studio on a medley of “Bony Moronie,” “Summertime Blues” and “You Never Can Tell;” singing “The Circle Game” on stage with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; laying down an early version of “You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio” backed by Neil Young and the Stray Gators; and promoting Court & Spark during a full gig March 3, 1974, backed by Tom Scott & the LA Express.
On stage, Mitchell is an alluring host, telling stories, introducing and explaining songs and laughing like someone who’s happy to be doing what she’s doing. Her between-song levity is a striking counterbalance to the heaviness of the songs themselves and showcases a side of Mitchell that only occasionally manifests in the music.
With 96 tracks in all, titles necessary repeat. But with an artist like Mitchell, that hardly matters. The well-chosen takes give listeners a fascinating sonic peek into the mind of a musical genius as she builds such songs as “Help Me,” “Dreamland,” “Raised on Robbery” and others from sketches into fully formed audio artworks. Meanwhile, the never-released-in-any-format “Like Veils Said Lorraine” is a long-lost companion to “Banquet.”
Getting through the set requires nearly a full-workday commitment. Before it’s all over, Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 3 will steal months, perhaps years, from fans.
