7.27.17 Broad St.  Providence, RI.

It’s been a while, but I went back out to shoot on Broad St. today.  I met four different people today, but Hector, the kind soul in the first images with the Yankees hat, is the one that left the biggest impression on me. Most of the time when I encounter folks I photograph on Broad St., my conversations tend to be brief. I’ll ask their name and take a few images, ask a some questions, and then be on my way, especially if they seem to be heading somewhere or in a rush. But there was something about Hector that made me want to sit and stay for a while.  I spoke to him in Spanish, and when that wasn’t working too well, I pulled out Google Translate, and I learned that he was applying for Section 8 housing. He had the forms and pulled them out because he couldn’t understand what they said because they were written in English. We went over them with a little help from Google. I could tell he was down and frustrated, but we shared some moments that I hope brightened his day. He definitely brightened mine. This project is so many things for me. Today I understood that I need to take more time with it, try and find out more about the people I’m photographing. I love finding a connection with others in order to get a better understanding of this community and what people are going through. Thanks for taking the time to view this post today.
