KB Home Community Spotlight: Cedar Brook in Houston, Texas
Finding a home that’s “just right” for you and your family starts with finding the just-right community.
At KB Home, we strive to build communities that are convenient to schools, shopping, and entertainment, and that also provide the perfect place for our residents to become neighbors. KB Home is where friendships begin.
Today we’re visiting the Cedar Brook community in beautiful Houston, Texas.
The Atlantic magazine named Houston America’s #1 Job Creator in 2013, citing topography and geography as keys to the city’s success. You’ll find a thriving energy industry in Houston, along with health care, biomedical research, and aerospace. And our Cedar Brook community is convenient to the Energy Corridor District®, where some of the world’s most powerful energy companies are located. It’s the third largest employment center in the region with over 91,000 employees.
When you think of Houston, a certain famous space-age phrase might come to mind (“Houston, we have a problem”). But you won’t have any problem finding fun things to do in this vibrant city, beginning with Space Center Houston, which is the Official Visitors Center of NASA Johnson Space Center. Visitors can view the historic mission control facility, the Apollo 17 Command Module, a Mission Mars interactive exhibit that explores the Red Planet, and ride a tram through nearby Johnson Space Center.
When you’re ready for more down-to-earth activities, the 55-acre Houston Zoo is home to over 6,000 animals. And the city’s Museum of Fine Arts offers more than 65,000 works of art from around the world, and is considered one of the largest museums in the United States.
For a bit of fresh air, our Cedar Brook gated community is convenient to two area parks, Moritz Pech Family Park and Bear Creek Pioneers Park.
Houston, We Have No Problems
Our Cedar Brook community features ENERGY STAR® certified two-story homes with 2-car garages. You’ll have your choice of six different floor plans, ranging in size from 1663 square feet to 2315 square feet. All this flexibility means you can choose a home with anywhere from 3-5 bedrooms, and 2.5-3 baths.
An Entertaining Design
Entertaining is easy with an open concept floor plan, and you won’t need to buy a McMansion to feel like you’ve got tons of room for guests. This layout, from Floor Plan 1930, gives you more seating options by joining the great room with the dining area and open kitchen. Now the family cook can be part of the action even during meal prep. All KB homes feature this spacious open design.
And can we just mention all the great cabinet and shelf space you’ll find in a KB home kitchen? An optional pantry is one clever way to solve every kind of storage problem imaginable. Floor Plan 2080 gives you the perfect excuse to stock those shelves with holiday treats.
Future Ready
It would only be fitting to find a space-age high-tech kitchen in a city synonymous with NASA. Explore a whole new world with brand-new appliances so efficient they almost do the cooking for you.
Home Suite Home
A private master suite with enough room for a spacious sitting area sounds like a sweet design. Floor Plan 1930 will give you plenty of room to roam.

French Quarter: Cafe Du Monde
By: Maggie Schoepke
The next stop to our New Orleans trip was early Friday morning when my classmates and I arrived at Cafe Du Monde, a traditional French coffee shop, developed near what is now known as the French Quarter. I had been prepared for the limited menu options I would find once there, but when I arrived I was still in shock at the lack of variety and options for French coffee. According to my understanding, this is because the French treasure tradition and place value on fresh food, free of the additives the American culture has so adopted. Keeping an open mind to the coffee and the culture behind it, I ordered a bag of customary beignets and a coffee au lait to go. The little bit of milk provided in the drink made me feel slightly relieved as I am one of the many US citizens obsessed with adding flavor and sugar to caffeinated beverages. Though the coffee was more bitter than my typical brew, the fried donut made up for the beverage’s lack of sweetness, all thanks to the large quantity of powdered sugar doused atop the crunchy pastry.
Besides the fried, powdery texture of the beignet, I found that the donut itself tasted a lot like the corn and apple fritters I had grown up eating. This added a layer of nostalgia and comfort to the new found treat, and for that I was truly thankful. Looking back, I view this instance as solid evidence against the common misconception that all French food is fancy. The fact that such a key treat in French culture is made out of fried dough, and traditional beverages are also served with just as much simplicity, disproves the illusion all together. In this way the dish’s hospitable and intimate flavor made up for the hurried pace of eating customary to that of the French culture.
After downing the pastry and forcing down one last gulp of the ever-bitter brew, I was ready to face the day. My classmates and I were given the taunting task of managing a self-guided tour of what little time we had in the French Quarter. Thankfully for us, this was a couple of hours, which was a decent enough span to look around, and see the sights and shops that surrounded such a landscape spewing with French culture.
As my friends and I strolled the streets, I noted how the architecture of the French Quarter was rich with ideas from both European and North American influences. Specifically this included varieties of Spanish, French, Creole, and American design. Giant balconies, porches, elaborate gates, and vividly colored cottages are no stranger to the architectural exterior of New Orleans. This odd but delightful combination of southern US building style is also mimicked in the way in which NOLA art is composed and distributed. From street work to formal galleries, the presentation of crafts such as acrylic paintings, rough wood cuts, and bold charcoal sketches is as diverse and distinct as the structures that display them.
It was my pleasure to roam a setting so filled with evidence of the melting pot that New Orleans was and is today. I am thoroughly convinced such an environment is essential to the unification and integration of the numerous cuisines and cultures that surround us. Therefore, I am more than thrilled to see how both the food and the architecture of the French Quarter mold and shape under the diverse influences of the wild and brilliant city, New Orleans.
