Fic Writing Updates 11/10
Been super duper busy of late as I have a second job in the evening cutting into writing time and also having to get some art done for zines. Just been a balancing act ; w ;
However! Working on fics to get them updated so don't worry, the updates are coming I swear! <3
The goal this month is to get a lot of these long fics wrapped up so I have less stories to update on my plate which should equal faster updates!
JUJUTSU KAISEN LONGFIC UPDATES
The Yuuji Files: About 9k words into this chapter and just about to reach the halfway point so...it is a very large chapter, but feels short writing it honestly given how the action is flowing! Hopefully readers will enjoy!
Broken in the Ways No One Sees: Last chapter should come out today! That's the plan at least! I want to get this chapter out so the story can be brought to its conclusion <3 Spouse Wanted: Hoping to write and post an update today for this one if I can. Chapter is almost done, just have to write the final scene
Can't Help a Cuddle: Sorting out the notes and starting to work on it! A lot of suggestions to organize and work into a chapter so it has been slow going, but hopefully will satisfy readers <3 Lessons in Accidental Seduction: New chapter is in the works, slowly but surely!
Malevolence of Love: Taking a small break to sort out notes for the next chapter as the angst is heading for a conclusion now...
Who's A Good Boy: Once Broken is done, going to speed run the chapters of this story to get it completed. Think it is an easier one to clear out then some of these!
Careful What you Joke About: Working on next chapter slowly but surely, just making sure it flows how I like, but still on the docket for an update soon When You Have Two Grandsons: This is a comfort fic so it gets updated when I get inspired and needing something to write/relax from other fics. No new chapter just yet....
Mirrored Lives: Plan is to get this one finished out in terms of the rewrite to the outline and then push it out to get it concluded so it stops hanging over me :C
MY HERO ACADAMIA FIC UPDATES
Jealousy is Not a Good Friend: My other comfort fic. Especially as the readers are calling for us to be mean to Kirishima and break his feelings into tiny pieces...and you KNOW I'm here for angst.
Unsung Heroes: Working on it when I can, just really want to update it > . < but also want to take my time with it >.<
ONE -SHOTS
KiriOchaToga Oneshot: Because I want to write it and you can't stop me.
Once Upon a Blob: Because I want some Blobkuna....
FICS TO COME
Changing this fics that I'm actively working on writing as...too many ideas rattling around that I want to write >.< So these are fics that are on the docket to come and going to actually write. COLLAB FIC: Still working on this fic and excited to eventually share it with readers <3
Culturally Inappropriate: The first chapter is being prepared and I'm going to launch it once I finish some of the other long fics so can devote a lot more time to it! I want to do some art for it...but will make a poll of readers want to see that!

How did you start doing jobs for kingsisle?? I'm trying to break into the industry as an artist, and I have no clue how to approach potential employers, even just for commissions 😭😭
Hey! So I actually work full time with KingsIsle as a character animator- my job year round is to make pets, mounts, mobs, npc's move :D
How I got started here is kind of a wild story. I had been wanting to reach out to KI about possibly interning with them post-graduation- I had a few people I semi knew at the company, and knew I'd have a good portfolio piece to show them from my senior thesis project. However, three days before graduation, a friend from KI msg'ed me that KI was doing summer internships, and asked if I was interested. I spent the next 3 days building my portfolio website/resume & sent it to my friend. A month and two interviews later, they accepted me! Once my internship was drawing to and end, they were able to offer me a full time position.
My #1 piece of advice for folks trying to break into the industry: MAKE CONNECTIONS. NETWORK. Obviously having dedication and building your artistic skills (whether that's character design, animation, story boarding, etc) is a huge part of it- like you can make as many connections as you want, but if you don't have a decent set of skills/a portfolio to back you up, then you might be out of luck there. But I cannot understate the importance of networking.
So, how do you make connections/network? My advice:
-I know everyone can't afford it, but going to an art school/college is a decent way to make connections- not just with teacher's who have worked in the industry themselves, but also with your future artists. Heck, I've been seeing younger artists like myself start their own studios. You can defo still make connections w/o college, but I just wanted to note that.
-Interact with artists/folks in the industry online. comment on their posts, ask them genuine questions. Most folks are happy to answer questions or give portfolio advice.
-Mentorships are a great thing- also something i see offered on twitter a lot. Some studio's like dreamworks have "internship" like programs where people who have recently graduation or are looking for a career change can apply to and learn from. I'd follow companies you're interested in via linkedin, or visit their websites to see if they offer things like this
-Also!! Participate in anijams, gamejams, art swaps, zines- these are all great ways to connect with fellow artists online. My college has an animation club that does anijams twice a year- which is a GREAT thing to put on your resume- it shows collaboration, dedication- things you need to be open to when working in the industry.
-I'd also say that trying to narrow down what you're really passionate about doing (for me, 3d animation just fit my heart the best) and learn more about it. Watch youtube videos, follow tutorials. Practice your anatomy, do gesture drawings from life, draw as many hands and feet as you can, lol. All things to help strengthen your skills! Consistency is key!!
I know that's a lot of info, so I just want to reiterate something: I've been at KI for about a year and a half now, and I am still just as passionate about this game as I was beforehand. That passion is one of my greatest assets. WANTING to do what I do for work makes working a lot easier, and produces a better product. If you have a passion, a drive to do something, you can do the damn thing. Making connections/being consistent as an artists can feel wildly overwhelming. But it doesn't have to be. You're worthy of sharing your art and ideas with the world, and people want to hear them. Baby steps! Start small. Heck talking to me already gets your started with networking :D
Hope that wasn't too rambly/answered some of your questions anon. Feel free to inbox or dm me if you wanna chat more- goes for anyone reading this :)

[Undescribed images in order: a twitter thread by @/dandywara "✨india✨ @ store open" which says "Yall getting out of pocket w some of these "zines" which are actually art books]
["So yall demanding people send their fuckin id's in now to draw anime fanart? Are you gonna send them a 1099 form too for their hard work on your perfect bound book that youre gonna charge people 50 bucks for are you payin them in sticker sheets?]
["I get that zines are fun especially for younger artists but the way some of these mods run their shit, demanding hours of work on the piece itself then usually have people doin extra shit only to either pay you in merch or give maybe like 300 bucks max is ridiculous]
["I think a lot of people get tricked bein like well theyre spreading funds equally among everyone! Sure, but please break down how much youre getting for hours and hours of work in a book thats being PUBLISHED. Not stapled together, published. Please value yourself more.]
["Lets not forget that the artists are now required to market and promo the zine up until the release date, which btw you should be paid for that work too.]
["I wish yall would just start calling these things art books bc there are people who still make classic, hand made, messy zines who have their work called lazy/poorly done bc the average person now thinks a zine looks professionally published]
["Zines were originally created as counter culture with the sole purpose of being a free cheap way to share art among the often marginalized & yall co-opted the word into a way to underpay artists for a professionally printed art book im weak af".]
[OP replies to a user whose name is censored, and says "This thread is about how people using the guise of "its a zine!" to describe a professionally printed art book contributes to underpaying artists for their work as well as defeats the original purpose of zines which were created in direct opposition to capitalism".]
[Another reply from OP to a user, which says "Im not blaming any specific people for this cause language evolves & people will use whatever terms available to them but there needs to be a conversation about how a lot of these zine mods undervalue (especially young) artists work".]
y’all need to stop making a living off of young, bipoc artists for nothing

So, September is coming up, and with it smutember, and we’re doing it again! (At least I hope you’re with me, lol).
Just like last year, it runs alongside to the official daily word prompts on the official smutember blog: Smutember is an event that runs all throughout September for all fandoms. The following is meant as an addition, not a replacement. If you want to do daily prompts, please use the official words prompts (linked above). However, since daily prompts can be a bit intimidating (especially for a fandom corner that’s 25+ years old like ours and people in it have busy lives), as the resident smut advocate in our fandom, I again customized an alternative that can still incorporate the official themes.
Just like last year, down below you have a list of TROPE AND THEME PROMPTS. They’re a remix of sorts of last year’s tropes, with some you’ve seen before and some new ones, meant to spark a variety of ideas. The idea is that with these you can post once (or twice) per week instead of daily.
Be it for fanart or fanfic or any other sort of fanwork, tropes can be combined, (and they can be combined with the daily themes too), whatever floats your boat. Also, specifically: This event isn’t Usamamo-centric only. I will reblog any Sailor Moon content of any pairing as long as it follows the rules! (See below)
The aim of this event is to create sex-positive content together that celebrates a healthy depiction of consentual sexuality. Erotic fanfiction is a beautiful art, especially in a fandom of ours so largely cultivated by women and for women, as well as a strong inclusive focus on queer and gender-queer content and their creators!
What’s new: I’m taking a page out of the mini-bang’s impressive book, and when smutember is over, I will compile all entries that followed the rules into an online-only e-zine! This also means that art that may be too explicit for tumblr can still be included in the e-zine!
Here are the weekly trope challenges:
Reinvent a trope!
WEEK 1 (September 1st - 7th): Pick 1 or 2
🍋 Reunion Sex 🍋 Sex Fails 🍋 Second Chance Sex 🍋 You Talk In Your Sleep 🍋 Unresolved Sexual Tension 🍋 New Old Flame 🍋 Go Seduce My Archnemesis 🍋 Bedsharing 🍋 Sex with the Ex/Break-Up Sex 🍋 In Public
WEEK 2 (September 8th - 14th): Pick 1 or 2
🍋 Make-Up Sex 🍋 Battle Couple 🍋 Mission Sex 🍋 Work-Out Sex 🍋 Accidental Pervert 🍋 Bathing/Shower 🍋 Pool/Onsen 🍋 Sexual Fantasies 🍋 Blind Date 🍋 Aroused By Your____ (pick a feature)
WEEK 3 (September 15th - 21st): Pick 1 or 2
🍋 Established Relationship 🍋 “Thank God We’re Alive” 🍋 Caught In The Act 🍋 First Times 🍋 Introduction By Hook-Up 🍋 Pining 🍋 Locked In Together In A Small Space/ Trapped Together 🍋 Huddling For Warmth 🍋 Socially Distanced Sex 🍋 Stupid Sexy Friend 🍋 Caught In The Rain 🍋 Living Food Platter/Eating Off You 🍋 Shunga
WEEK 4 (September 22nd - 30th): Pick 1 or 2
🍋 Mutual Masturbation 🍋 Awkward/Clumsy Sex 🍋 Oh Crap There’s Fanfic Of Us 🍋 Talking In Bed 🍋 Fidelity Test 🍋 Fake-NOT-Dating 🍋 Mindlink 🍋 Sex Games 🍋 Tinder 🍋 Blackout/Quarantine/Disaster Warning/Weathering The Storm
RULES
1. Rating: These fics don’t necessarily need to be M or, in the case of Ao3, E- rated. Obviously, they are very, very welcome to be explicit for this event, but you can also go T-rated and stay in lime or ‘blacked out’-territory if you’re uncomfortable with writing explicit scenes! Both is perfectly and absolutely welcome! This of course also goes for fanart - your fanart may depict sexy scenes, but does NOT have to be explicit! (It can, though! Be aware that for tumblr’s guidelines, when sharing your art first, you may have to clip your images as a sort of preview. The original can then be sent to me privately to include into the e-zine!) 2. Minimum Age of Characters: Since this is a community event, if you do go explicit M rated material: age them up where necessary! So that everyone can be comfortable writing and reading these, let them be 18 at the minimum if they’re going to openly and explicitly wohoo. (16-17 is the global average age of consent worldwide, and also the average age for first sex among girls in many western countries. However, since most fanfic readers are located in the US, where the age of consent is 18, we’re going with 18 so that everyone can be comfortable reading!) If you go for canon fics at a time they are below this age, where you do not want to age up (say you’re going for an episode fix!) please stay in T territory for this event. 3. Off limits: Depictions of sexual acts that contain harmful, violent and non-consenting behaviour with non-consenting individuals (or those that aren’t able to consent, for instance because of their age, or state of mind among else!). If it doesn’t fly by law or the ICD in real life, please refrain from depicting it in the context of this event. This means that dubcon and noncon will not be reblogged for the event, so that people can be safely consuming the content without being triggered. All content will be screened in this regard, and I may contact you regarding trigger warnings. This is not at all to censor content, or that this content is in any form less valid (as long as it is properly tagged and not including characters that aren’t of age), but simply to ensure a safe environment for everyone reading. 4. Tag your triggers. Except the aforementioned limitation of harmful content, nothing is off limits. Explore your kinks! But if you write something that might be offensive to your readers, please tag it. This is ALSO a good way for your readers to find exactly what they ARE looking for! On Ao3 this can be done directly on the fic tags, for FF fics and fic links you can do it here on Tumblr via the fic post tags or in ANs. This is in consideration of your readers. 5. You can obviously post art for this event too. All previous rules apply here, as well. Unfortunately, Tumblr is now against tasteful nudity. That doesn’t mean you can’t link to a deviant art or similar account though, should you want to. And, since this year will include an e-zine at the end of it, all art will still be included fully in it. Here too, please tag your triggers. If you still want to post art on Tumblr, choose a T rated image - clip them where needed, or keep them (semi-)clothed, show us a heated kiss, etc! (Obviously we would love ALL the art and the nude body is a beautiful, wonderful thing, but obviously Tumblr doesn’t agree with us anymore!) 6. Have fun! Celebrate sexuality in an open, sex-positive way with us, try to be unapologetic about your likes while you write this, and appreciate the beauty that comes in the form of content with a largely female-gazing creator-base and audience! Smut in fanfiction has been beautifully put as the subjectification of sexuality (as opposed to objectification). So let’s celebrate this art form together! 7. Reviews: No one is forced to review. It can be uncomfortable to review a fic that contains sexual acts for any number of always valid reasons. Keep in mind, however, that much like a Burlesque dancer on stage, putting out sexual content can also be very intimidating to an author, and nothing is more discouraging than silence when baring yourself to an audience like this. That being said: Both Ao3 and FF have the option to review in anon mode. That means you have the option to remain anonymous while cheering the author on all the same. Just like the Burlesque dancer, your resident smut authors prefer to go on stage to loud cheering - it makes it all less awkward for them, and feels a little more like a big celebration!
If you’re unsure what sex positivity entails and want to read up, I wrote a post about it here.
This event is not supposed to cause harm. This means that I will screen all content before I reblog it here, and include it in the e-zine. So that everyone of age can feel safe reading the fanworks in the event, dubcon and noncon will not be reblogged and included in the e-zine, and accurate tagging and content warning will be watched. This does NOT MEAN that you cannot post this material: your own desire to write it and someone else’s desire to explicitly read this material are valid. I do not entitle myself to censor. It just means it will not be reblogged and shared through the event so that everyone may feel safe to read to the best of my ability. (But, of course, remember that I, too, might be biased, and not discover subtle forms of it, either. We’re all, in the end, a product of our upbringing and society, and I cannot be completely unbiased.)
During the event, I will be posting all Sailor Moon Smutember contributions in this format on my blog if you @ me to the post.
The official hashtag for the event is #smutember2020 hosted by the official smutember blog. Using it helps people find the content who search for it as well as those who wish to block it!
#smutember2020#smutember sailor moon fandom#smutember usamamo fandom corner#smutember2020 rules#Spread the word!

little blog post
TL;DR / my current interests, updates on art things i do, and a general: Thank You. For enjoying what I do!
it’s nearing the end of the year! congratulations for making it this far and i hope we come to enjoy the years to come
current brainworms: - final fantasy xiv
endwalker!!!! aahhhhh i’m currently on the first lv90 msq, but i’ll come to finish it soon <3 i luv estinien. of course. since i only was like at ARR late august there’s a BUNCH of content i’ve yet to do, i will be stuck here for a while
- baldur’s gate 3
astarion. astarion astarion astarion. saw my friend play it “i know a character you’d simp for” and i was hooked LOL i will want to draw more fanart later.. but.. also use time to romance astarion... oh the choices.... i only got it recently, my own christmas treat ^_^ also this game helps me with dnd 5e mechanics wise; seeing it all visualized this way is so helpful!!!!
- MY OC
now onto . actual stuff
- my commissions will resume soon. been a bit rough towards the latter part of the year, and ngl i have ffxiv to blame and no self control (lol) finishing up some final ones but we should start kickin 2022 :D
- apologies for shop discrepancies ; i despise shipping through the holiday season, and ended up doing it a second time >_< timing created so many delays, especially from the pandemic. i’ll try to manage my shop better next opening: which would be sometime 2022 Q1 (i aimed for january, but i need to make stuff actually. haha). frankly, had to cancel some orders from miscount of stock Q_Q but also as i continue to grow customers = more orders to manage. got around 150 orders this time!! more prone to mistakes. i apologize! and of course, any problems you have, i am always free to talk and even things out!
- freedom... i’ve had constant zine projects i signed up for and had to do. probably for the past 2-3 years. but for the first time i think i’ll have comfy breathing room finally ^o^ i’d have a week or two of zine-free breaks, but now it’s refreshing knowing one due date isn’t in months to come. and obviously, i’m not blaming anyone but myself, i can’t seem to turn down workload so i need to continuously work on that haha!
- streaming...?!?!?! making a comeback???!?! alas the freedom is coming back but i think i’ll come back to streaming more often and work on commissions ^_^ though i can’t guarantee it, cause every time i stream i dont come back for a couple months LOLL but i hope and believe time will work with me
i feel like i was gonna type more but whatever.... errrr lol
just. a Big Big THANK YOU!!! for enjoying my art. sharing it. leaving cute tags. funny tags. yes i read them you guys are insane (affectionate) thank you for giving me money, in any way, tips, purchases, commissions. “money can’t buy happiness” is dumb and wrong we are living in capitalism LOL if you like creators’ works, money is always great :} and knowing that my content evokes any positive feeling... makes me so happy! im no big name artist, ones i’d see w/ like 10k+ following-- and yes numbers dont matter my guy, but it’s inevitable to look at and compare. but more the reason that i appreciate YOU guys for being there. the great bunch of people constantly liking my works. tysm... tysm
idk.. insert more sappy things here. thank you.
and of course my ask box is always there! ♥

Tu-Do Hospitals
Patients Of.....
@ 1986 W Germany Pressing
*****
1986 - the first TRUST (The Punk Magazine In W Germany) appears. The German hardcore scene is still in its infancy. Some of you will remember vividly and not be able to suppress a few sentimental tears, for others the seriousness of life had not even begun.
One of the better known bands back then was TU DO HOSPITAL. In the first TRUST there was some kind of report about that. 15 years later I ask Winni, who was then singing at TU DO HOSPITAL, about his memories of then and what his life looks like now….
***
Hi, first introduce yourself, what's your name? how old are you? What are you doing?
Winni: Hi - I'm Winni, on this planet for 34 years, currently in San Francisco, California, where I work as a graphic designer.
Winni, you used to sing at TU DO HOSPITAL. in the first TRUST there was a report about you and 2 concerts that you played in leutkirch and linz. that was 15 years ago. what memories do you still associate with the band and the “scene” in germany back then?
Winni: I found the scene very exciting at the time. The whole punk rock history seemed to be changing and a lot of new people came into the scene who were very active and redefined punk rock.
I think a lot of kids came along who were very influenced by the US hardcore scene and that brought new momentum to the movement. Suddenly you saw a lot of new people at the concerts who didn't care how “punk” they looked or whether they were laughed at when they went around with their skateboards.
This may all be a very personal experience, but around the mid-80s there was suddenly a lot going on. Many new bands & zines started, more concerts were organized and all of a sudden there was a network across Germany and other countries that made it possible for bands like ours to play everywhere.
At concerts you often met the same people who were very active, whether it was a cow village in Holland or Kreuzberg - at that time you traveled huge distances to see bands and a lot of people in bands were also involved in organizing concerts and wrote for zines. I think to myself that that has not necessarily changed today, only the “scene” is probably much bigger and more professional today compared to back then.
To stay a bit in the past: TU DO HOSPITAL was a band with very personal lyrics that were probably written by you. “You think you know me, but that's not true. you see my clothes and hear what i say, but what i feel is hidden inside me from you. my thoughts change very often, because i'm learning new things every day, but you have this picture of me and you think i'm still like that ”(from“ wrong image ”). what do you think of your old texts today? and to stick with the wrong image, what kind of person is winni wintermeier today?
Winni: I haven't looked back at the old lyrics for a long time and can no longer find the old record to read it all over again. I can still remember a few fragments and I think that many of the things I wrote back then seem a little naive today. On the other hand, much of it is still valid today and some thoughts have not necessarily changed. I can't even describe in a few words what kind of person I am today.
I could try to describe my personality, but it will probably sound like some sappy personal ad. Who I am and what I do in this world is a question that I continue to research with great interest and which may never be able to answer. This is partly reflected in the old texts.
In retrospect, what significance did the band have in your life? why and how did you break up?
Winni: At that time the band was already an important part of my life. As a result, I have had relevant experiences and met many people who have also shaped my life. We broke up because of musical and personal differences without much drama. We just got to a point where it wouldn't have been easy to continue as a band.
And does it still matter today? are you still in contact with your bandmates? do you even have contact with anyone “from the past”?
Winni: It hasn't lost its meaning, but looking back it was just one of the many important experiences I've had in my life. I lost contact with my old colleagues, but recently a friend sent me a CD from the Carnival of Souls, the band from Achim, the old guitarist.
You now live in san francisco and run the one-man company 3AM (www.3am.net). how did your move come about?
Winni: Boredom drove me to San Francisco in 1992. I had studied photography in Germany for two years and that didn't really help me. I just couldn't imagine going through this for 2-3 years. I had visited San Francisco several times and had become a kind of second home.
I knew a lot of people who do interesting things and there was a lot going on in terms of culture. For me it was very inspiring to take the big leap to concentrate on the things that interest me (music, photography, design, art, etc ...)
Do you see a connection between the punk / hardcore ideals that you also promoted in your texts for TU DO HOSPITAL and what you are doing now? “It's ok if you don't like our music because we don't play what you want to hear. if you don't like the things we sing about, listen and try to understand us. I don't mind if you don't like our music. we put our energy into it and like to play it ”(from“ our music ”)“ i feel young and strong, full of energy. I know how to use my strength, I won't hide it. i live to be creative and not to waste my time. I know there is an end, but I'm not afraid of dying. "(from" 1-2-tu-do ")
Winni: Partly yes, I'm a little “punk rock damaged”. I still have many ideals from earlier times that are reflected in my work. With “3 am” I work on a lot of record covers for various small indie / punk rock labels or just for friends for little money.
These are often projects that are very non-commercial and where no one earns anything materially. On the other hand, I also do a lot of things for bands that call themselves punk, but are basically nothing more than any other rock band that want to be popular and successful.
I often have to make compromises so that I can pay my rent. To get to the quotes - I sometimes wish I had the same energy again that I had at the young age of 18 - my body can no longer keep up with what I plan to do in my head, ha, Ha.
With 3AM you do some graphics / layout things for various punk / hardcore things. how did this collaboration come about?
Winni: A friend of mine was working at a small punk label that had just released two records and needed a graphic designer for their new projects. Back then I had designed a couple of CD covers in Germany that I showed them and all of a sudden I got a lot of work.
The label (Fat Wreck Chords) then grew quite quickly and other labels (Hopeless, Side 1, etc ...) saw my stuff and suddenly it became my full-time job. It was quite hectic because I had to teach myself everything and I had hardly any idea how to use a computer.
Can you live on 3AM?
Winni: So far I've been able to make ends meet, but right now I have to look around a little for new work. The budget for a lot of record covers is quite small and for the last two years I have often helped out with a hi-tech magazine that paid me quite well, but they are just going down the drain.
San Francisco has become very expensive and the new internet economy has almost completely destroyed the city, which has made it very difficult for many people to survive here. At the moment I would like to concentrate more on my photography, because I don't feel like sitting in front of the computer all the time.
Do you actually see your work as political? do you try to make certain statements in what you do? or is that more "art for art`s sake"?
Winni: My graphic arts less, although I often work for bands that are politically oriented in their lyrics. Some of my photos are more political because I am interested in documenting the influence people have on their environment. That suggests more in the direction of photojournalism and as an artist I wouldn't necessarily describe myself because this term is not important to me.
I think that with 3am I will try to create a free space in which I can work for people who have similar points of view and who work outside the big system and that is politically motivated.
what motivates you these days?
Winni: The urge to explore life. I find inspiration for this everywhere, whether it's music, art, literature or the old man sitting around the corner in my café.
What will you do if we repeat this interview in 15 years?
Winni: I don't know - I still haven't decided on a big plan for the future. I'll be able to tell you that in 15 years.
Thanks for your answers!

Hi Ellie! I really don’t want to bother you with these things while you’re on your vacation, but you really seem to have a nice understanding of it and I kind of wanted to read what you think. I’ve read so many things about how creating art can be great for mental health. I’m at a point in my depression in which I can tell I need something like that to pour my thoughts into like painting or writing and the idea excites me, but I don’t have the mental energy to do it. How do you handle this?
Hey dear anon ! Those types of questions never bother me don't worry, even tho I might sometimes take a little time answering but I'm having a bit of a solitary time out today so here goes.
I think this is a very important question ; I don't have a clear cut answer though, this is also something I often struggle with. But here are a few considerations :
- First of all, are you blocking yourself with stuff like perfectionism, super high expectations of yourself/what 'art' should be ? Because that can be a huge drain. I think it's important to offset that by taking a 'playground' approach. Or whatever works. And think that whatever you manage to do, it's always better than the blank page. It's training, and it's a healing process. Don't be afraid to try stuff, stop if you're not into it anymore, and see it all as a beautiful process...and to try to have fun, even if it feels silly at first.
- Another thing : mental illness can often create this void in your brain and life, where you close yourself off and creating only from your inner miasma can be so painful. So I think it's important to know what feeds and recharges you creatively ; what spurs your need to create in an easy, fun way. These are going to be times where you're not actively creating and yet, you're still working on it. For me it's stuff like walking in the woods, finding myself in foreign places, modern art exhibitions, reading fun and fast fantasy YA and social science articles, and simply good music...but I think everyone has their own. Stuff that makes you excited to create, and curious about the world.
- So yeah, also don't be afraid to be a little derivative. Find your role models and copy them a little (not directly and for profit of course lol) - write fanfic or meta, try to imitate a certain style...I find this is a good way to let go of your fears and ego and let yourself be guided by the genius of others. It can be very freeing and fun. And maybe you understand more why they did this or that in that way. And learn a lot about yr own voice.
- Just do the fun parts. Know what they are for you and when you are feeling down, skip to them. I write fanfic abt lawyers without researching much about the legal system lol bc it annoys me. I sketch too without really bothering about clean up. You can be picky or harsh w yourself another day. I didn't come up w this but I think it's also important to let yrself create shitty things and see it as part of the process. And on days where you are really not feeling it consider the easiest possible ways of doing stuff like doodling on a page, making collages, or speaking into yr dictaphone app. It's important to take breaks also of course.
- Another key thing is to start considering creating as part of your mental health routine and self-care. For me I know keeping a diary is essential, otherwise I go all antsy. I've been trying out to write more letters to vent about my emotions and tearing them up too. I know drawing works wonders for a lot of people. You can say this may not be art but actually I really practiced my (self) observation skills, ability to describe emotions, I found interesting metaphors and ideas...but also I think to create you need a sort of...flow of emotions, and familiarity with them. Even the ugly parts. I think creating requires a sort of radical (self) acceptance, so you can truly see yrself and others without wanting to set everything on fire.
- I find it really helps to find other people who are into creating the same type of stuff as you and are creative in general and make them into "accomplices" - I have a friend who is super into making zines so I've been working on one of my own, I found sb to write fic with, a really good beta, someone who loves to go to museums as much as me....that gives me extra energy when I'm lacking.
- Become more observant of real life around you. Watch ppl, listen how they talk. Observe how light falls. The patterns of nature. Try to notice new smells, new sounds, new tastes, little details (this is also a good exercise to deal w anxiety/dissociation tbh). Think about what they imply. Become a sort of poetic detective. Try to find new metaphors. Practice mindful openness, but also sharpen your skills, and decide what place to give what you perceive.
- Also I'm finding the "try to do sth for 10 min" thing is really useful. Sometimes I think I'm tired as in "I don't have the energy" but really I'm tired in a "I have an emotional block and I'm letting it sit on me" way. So having this idea of just starting sth for 10 min, often I find it liberates me and then I want to keep going. And if I really don't feel it I stop but having tried does give me a good feeling.
- Finally I think it's just...fall in love w yr own creative process. Your characters, the story you love, the things you want to depict, the irrepressible need that drives you...your own "symbolic culture". To get a bit woowoo for a minute I really believe that we all have this sort of...unconscious cauldron of creative stuff in our deepest selves, made of memories and experiences and core questions and sensory memory-triggers and fears and hopes and thought patterns and stories. It's always shifting but the more we engage w it and feed it the more rich it becomes. You can do stuff like write down your dreams, think about what your favorite characters have in common, try to do creative meditation, freewrite/doodle, go on "creative dates" w yrself ala Julia Cameron...and whenever it responds I think you'll know. It always gives me this feeling of...groundedness, satisfaction, but also openness to mystery and a powerful urge to create.
Anyway I hope you find your own ways to make. Pls feel free to tell me how it goes, and good luck 🧡💛💖💛🧡💖

What’s Promised
Description: Matt finds his way as time ticks down to his acceptance to the Garrison.
OR a series of vignettes full of promises made and promises kept.
Author’s Note: Written for the @vldmattzine!
I'm decently pleased with this fic and I was honored to be a part of this zine! The finished product was really beautiful and if you didn't get to grab a copy, please enjoy this!
As always, feel free to check it out on Ao3!
5.
Matt is five when Katie is born.
He’s small, his handprints miniature compared to his dad’s, and the kitchen counter still towers above him, but Katie is even smaller. And chubbier. He pokes her cheek a couple of times in the cradle before his mother gently reprimands him. She says he looked like this when he was born too, soft and round. He doesn’t know if he believes her.
“Ka-tie… Katie.” He tries her name out loud. She doesn’t look like a Katie. She just looks… pudgy. “Pi- Pudgy,” he pouts. His mother ruffles his hair and he squeaks, ducking away.
“Come on, Matthew, let Katie get some sleep.” She guides him towards the door.
“When are we going to be able to play together?” Matt glances back at the cradle where a contented gurgle sounds. He thought for sure he would at least get a playmate out of this, but she’s too tiny to do anything fun. She can’t even talk yet. All he’s heard so far is blubbery giggles and the occasional whine.
His mother laughs. “Not for a while, baby. Don’t hold your breath.”
The first time Matt holds Katie, he’s struck by how warm she is. She radiates her own bubble of heat. Their mother reminds him to support the head and he does as she nuzzles against him. Her tiny, pudgy fingers grasp at his clothes. There’s so much life in her, even as small as she is. Her eyes are big and blinking, her breaths a bit weezy, and ever so gently against his chest, he feels her heartbeat.
He smiles and thinks that even though he wanted a brother, a baby sister might be even better.
4.
Matt can recite his four times tables forwards and backwards.
He’s working on his times tables up to ten forwards and backwards now but he doesn’t have anyone to practice with. He tries to practice with a classmate during recess but the other boy just looks at him strangely. He says they’ve only learned up to three.
Matt asks his teacher about it later, while everyone is grabbing their coats from their cubbies.
“I want to make sure you’re being challenged, Matthew,” she says. “You should be learning new things in school. If you already know it, there’s no need to keep quizzing you on it.”
“But…” His brow scrunches. “But other people aren’t taking the same quiz I am?”
“There are a few kids in other classes taking the same quizzes as you. But it’s true, most of your peers aren’t.”
“But their quiz is easier. That’s not fair!” He pouts and wrinkles up his nose.
“It’s not easier for them. Multiplication is as hard for them as division is for you. Does that make sense, Matthew?”
“No,” he frowns.
“Hmm, tell you what.” His teacher jots something down on a piece of paper. “I’ll call your family later, okay? They’ll be able to explain it to you a little better than I can.”
“What?” Matt’s hands grips the edge of the desk. “But I didn’t do anything wrong! Why do you have to call my parents?”
The bell rings a second time and his teacher gets up from her desk to bring them out to their buses. “You’re not in trouble,” she says as she shoos him towards his coat. “I’m just going to discuss some things with your parents to make sure we’re all on the same page. Okay?”
Matt nods, even though he doesn’t really get it, and works on his division tables on the bus ride home to distract himself.
They do talk about it when Matt gets home.
“So your teacher called today, Matt,” his dad says, glancing up from where he cuts another piece of chicken.
Matt almost bursts into frustrated tears right there. Instead, he only stabs at his food and mutters, “I didn’t do anything.”
“Hey, buddy. We know you didn’t do anything.” His dad leans down to meet Matt’s downcast eyes and sticks out his tongue once they make eye contact. Matt laughs despite himself. “That’s not what this is about. So you wanted to know why you’ve been taking different tests than the other kids in your class, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Your brain just works a little bit differently than your classmates. Some things, like maybe math, come easier to you than other people.”
“Now,” his mom interjects. “That doesn’t mean anyone is less than you are. Everyone’s good at different things. Some kids might be really good at sports. Some kids are good at art. Being smart certainly isn’t anything to be ashamed of but remember that being kind is the most important thing you can be.”
“I know, mom,” Matt grumbles.
At the end of the year, the school asks Matt and his family if they want to accelerate him but, in all her kindergarten prowess, Katie protests, “No! I’m going to catch up! It’s not fair if Matt gets even more ahead.”
Matt agrees and Katie gives him a huge smile.
3.
Matt hasn’t slept in three days.
His computer is mocking him, cursor just blinking and blinking until the screen dims and he moves his mouse to wake it again. He’s only typed three new words. He has to write at least another paragraph tonight.
Why do you want to attend the Galaxy Garrison? the application reads.
He holds back a groan and leans back in his chair, rubbing at his burning eyes. He almost wants to write, my dad works here, you have to accept me, but he can’t be that obnoxious and pretentious. He really does want to attend the Garrison but putting it down in words is like prying out his ribs one by one. Awful.
Finally, he turns to his still unfinished math homework. At least that should come easy to him.
It doesn’t. He can’t even do math correctly. How could he ever think he had a chance at the Garrison? Even if he gets in, they’ll crush him.
The lead of his pencil snaps.
Matt growls through his teeth and clicks the top for more lead for almost a minute before realizing the mechanical pencil must have run out of graphite. He roots through his bag (too aggressively) and throws the case of extra lead on his desk. He rips off the cap (too violently) and sticks of lead scatter across the table’s surface and spill onto the floor.
This time, he actually does scream. He slams his head into the desk. There are footsteps in the hall and the creak of his door opening. He doesn’t look up.
“Matt? Are you doing alright, honey?” He screws his eyes shut as he feels his face heating up. “Matthew?”
“I’m fine,” he chokes out, and there is it, the first tear. When it becomes clear his mom isn’t going to leave, he lifts his head. He swipes at his eyes and mutters again, “I’m fine. You don’t have to stay.”
His mom walks closer. “Why don’t you take a break? You’ve been working on this for weeks now.”
“And it’s still not done, mom! I need to…” A frustrated snarl escapes him as more tears drip down his face. “I just need to finish this.”
He doesn’t resist as his mom leans down to hug him. It makes the tears come even faster until his throat starts to burn and ache. “Dad’s going to think I’m so stupid,” he whispers into her shirt.
“Neither of us thinks you’re stupid.” She kisses the top of his head.
“But what if I don’t get in?”
“Then you don’t get in. You’ll go somewhere else and you’ll have a wonderful life and you’ll do great things. And we’ll still be proud of you.”
Matt smiles, still a small and fragile thing, and pulls away. He rubs at his cheeks with his sleeve. “I just… I want to go there so bad,” he confesses.
“I know, baby. But for tonight, why don’t you try and get some sleep? You can try again tomorrow, okay?” She taps on his desk.
“Okay,” Matt agrees.
The funny thing is he can’t fall asleep. He’s trying. He’s been trying for two hours. And all he’s really been doing is laying down on his bed, staring at those stupid, completely inaccurate glow-in-the-dark stars on his ceiling, and thinking about how much he wants to fly among them.
For years and years, he’s heard his dad recount his adventures. Missions to the moon and watching the world from so far above and glimpsing solar flares lick panes of reinforced glass. He wants desperately to be a part of something greater, something bigger than the world itself, and he knows he has to leave the bounds of this planet to do it.
As his eyes drift closed, the glowing stars wink at him. Maybe they’re making a promise.
2.
The two of them have spent their lives together. The Holt siblings: the menaces, the geniuses, the inseparable.
Matt never minded when Katie hung out with him and his friends. She’s as witty and funny as the best of them. It never felt like the babysitting it started out as. Once Katie gets older though, his friends start to question it.
Isn’t she old enough to stay home alone? Does your little sister have to sleep over too? It’s not that we don’t like her, man, she’s great, but doesn’t she have her own friends?
The last comment makes Matt pause. Of course she has friends. He can’t imagine why someone wouldn’t want to be friends with Katie. But… she never has any friends over. She never talks about her friends. He’s never even seen her with other kids from her school.
Matt bites his lip. That can’t be right. There’s got to be something he’s missing.
His friends invite him over to watch a movie a few days later and when Katie asks if she can come to, Matt inquires as casually as he can, “Maybe you want to go over to one of your friends’ houses. You never seem to hang out with them.”
Only silence answers him. Matt glances up to see Katie’s fingers paused over her keyboard. She swallows and goes back to typing. “Nah, they’re all busy,” she says.
“Yeah?”
“Yep.” Katie doesn’t look up.
“I mean… I’m just asking because I feel like I never see you hanging out with anyone in your grade, you know?”
Katie slams her laptop closed and Matt jumps. “Look, if you don’t want me there, just tell me!”
“W- What?” Matt stammers but Katie is already storming from the room. “Katie! Katie, come on!”
Matt curses under his breath with a groan, running his hands down his face. He really messed up this time, didn’t he? (Did he? He doesn’t even know what set her off.)
He flinches as he hears Katie’s door bang shut and the house rattles along with it. He finally gets to his feet and makes his way to Katie’s room. He knocks first but there’s no answer.
“Katie?” Matt sighs into the silence and leans his head against the door. “Katie, I didn’t mean it like that. I want you there. I really do. I love hanging out with you. You’re, like, the smartest person I know. I just want to make sure you have friends, which I know sounds so stupid, but… You have other friends, right? Other than me and my friends?” Matt waits, before asking again, “Katie?”
“I have friends, Matt! Just go away already!” She sounds a bit more watery than Matt had hoped but he doesn’t know what else to do. So he leaves it.
Matt privately wonders how to fix this while he lays awake in his bed until his door creaks open. He sits up, eyes widening at the sight of Katie. She’s rubbing at her eyes and at first he thinks it’s because of sleepiness but as she comes closer, it’s clear she’s crying.
“Matt?” she whispers. She crawls onto his bed as he sits there, frozen and useless. “I lied.”
A shock of cold spears through his heart. All he can seem to muster is a, “Hm?” but she barrels on.
“I- I don’t have any friends. They all h-hate me and they think I’m such a nerd and the only time they ever want to talk with me is when we have group projects-”
“Katie.”
“-and it’s just cause they want me to do all the work and then when I don’t do it they say that’s why they hate me and now you don’t even want to be around me so it must just be me-”
“Katie!” Matt grabs her shoulders and Katie jolts. “I want to be around you. I love spending time with you.” She looks away. “No, I mean it. No one else gets quantum frequencies like you do, right?” She laughs a little at that and Matt smiles before it turns again to a frown. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
Katie curls into herself. “Because you have friends. And it’s just… It’s more complicated than that. I’ve spent my whole life trying to catch up to you, accelerated classes, skipping grades, and it makes all the other kids hate me even more. And I didn’t even catch up! You’re going to leave and then I’m really going to be alone!”
“Well, we don’t know-” Matt tries.
“Come on, you’re getting in. And I want you to. I know it’s your dream. I don’t want you to have to worry about your stupid younger sister.”
“Don’t say that. You’re a lot of things but you’re definitely not stupid.”
“Thanks,” Katie scoffs. “I don’t know. It’s just… hard.”
“It gets easier. When kids are your age, they’re insecure, you know? You make them nervous. I actually used to eat lunch with my guidance counselor instead of in the cafeteria.”
“Really?” Katie sniffles and Matt feels like a failure of an older brother.
“Yeah, really. I didn’t meet my friends until middle school.”
“So I have to wait.”
“I guess. But you’ll be okay.” Matt pulls her in for a hug and she lays on his chest for a few seconds before wrapping her arms around him and returning the embrace. Matt doesn’t know what else to say but as he gently strokes her hair and hugs her a little tighter, he hopes this is enough.
“Alright. Thanks, Matt.” Katie untangles herself and gets up, wiping away the last of her tears. She pauses right before she exits the room. “I just want you to know… I’m going to be okay. If you get in and have to leave. I mean, it’s going to suck for a little bit but I can handle it. And then I’m going to meet you at the Garrison.”
Matt doesn’t need a pinkie promise to believe her.
1.
In the mail, Matt receives one acceptance letter. (And at home, Matt has to say one goodbye.)
Matt doesn’t even read the rest of the letter from the Garrison. He’s starts crying, crying, as he reads the header that says, Congratulations! His mother snatches the paper from him as he buries his head in his hands but it’s tears of relief coursing down his face.
“Oh my god,” he whispers into his palms. His mom honest-to-god squeals and hugs him, knocking him out of his shock. “Mom,” he grumbles but a smile creeps onto his face as it hits him.
He made it in. He’s going to the Galaxy Garrison.
“I knew you could do it.” His mom brushes a hand against his cheek before pulling away. She claps her hands, grabbing her phone from the counter. “We have to tell your dad! He’s going to be so proud.”
He is. He promises to them that even though he won’t be able to make it to Matt’s graduation, he’ll be the first one to greet him when he arrives at the Garrison. “It’ll be good to have another Holt around,” he says.
Katie takes it much better than Matt thought she would. It’s been another bad day at school, he can tell, but as he shares the news, he sees the fire light in her eyes. This only motivates her further.
Summer comes and goes faster than Matt can ever remember. His things are slowly packed into boxes, clothes and photos and books and tangled headphones. Saying goodbye to his home is much more sweet than bitter. He can feel the stars nearly at his fingertips, so close, and he’s ready to reach out and grab his future.
Katie and his mom drive him down to the Garrison. Hugs are exchanged as his dad greets them at the gate. Boxes are moved and furniture is shuffled about. He looks out the window of his new room, the realization that this is his life now hitting him hard.
He breathes deeply and smiles.
Katie lingers after their mom goes to start the car, the goodbye sticking in both of their throats. Her toes draw circles in the dirt and she holds her hands behind her back, gaze fixed on the ground.
“I’m going to miss you,” she finally mumbles.
“I’m gonna miss you too, Pidge.”
She huffs a laugh, muttering, “Don’t call me that.” The smile fades a bit. “Seriously though, I am going to miss you. Don’t forget to email or call or something.”
“I will. I promise.”
“Okay.” Katie finally meets his eyes. “This is only goodbye for now. Not for long. Because I’m going to catch up.” She jabs at his chest to emphasize her point. “Just wait.”
Matt grins and nods. He pulls her in for one last tight hug before she goes to follow their mom.
As they drive away from the Garrison, Matt sees Katie mouth, See you soon.
To the wind, he whispers, “I know.”

I'm an artist who wants to spread my Super Left (tm) values in a zine, but idk where to start. Do you have any suggestions as to how to get a small production team together? I can do online stuff too.
The great thing about zines is that you have a lot of options so let me try to break down how you can do this.
What’s the Zine About?
Figure out what you’re going to focus on. You seem to know what you want to do on this front but think about what medium you’d like to see in your zine. Is it going to be a general leftist zine with whatever topics you/volunteers send in or are you going to do themes. Are you strictly asking for writing or can people send in poetry, art, comics, photography, etc.?
Maybe you want to do a whole zine dedicated to community work? Then you make a “call for submissions” and let everyone know the theme of your zine and what they can contribute by a certain deadline. Let them know what mediums you’re looking for and whatever other details you think people need to know. In my experience, the really specific zines can either work or not - some people really want to express themselves on certain topics while others might require you to do most of the work.
Oh and don’t forget to name your zine! Maybe make a logo or have someone make one that you can put on your zine, the call for submissions posts, and maybe stickers, magnets, shirts, patches, buttons, etc.
Finding Artists and Writers
As far as getting the word out, I’d suggest posting on your social media. Maybe even create a page for your zine alone and tag it so it gets seen. The main zine I work on has a twitter, tumblr, facebook, instagram, and it’s own website. The last or first page in your zine can have this information or other ways of contacting you (like email) if people want to send stuff in for future issues (if you plan on doing multiple).
You’ll probably have to do a lot of work for the first zine or two unless you have friends that want to work on this with you or you have a big social media following. It’s okay if you don’t any submissions for a while, make this a personal project for now or you can even push deadlines dates back until you get enough submissions.
You can even ask writers and artists online if you can use some of their work that fits the theme of your zine but MAKE! SURE! TO! CREDIT! THEM!
Zine Layout
Figure out what size your zine is going to be and how you’re going to lay it out. I see a lot of different ways people do this so you’re going to have to figure out what you’re best at here. Try looking up some templates, here’s a page that has Microsoft templates for zines from 4 pages to 40 and you can find more online just like it. It’s already laid out and numbered you just have to fill it in. This link shows how to make mini-zines with one sheet of paper, which is very easy.
The zine community is very accessible to those who aren’t that great with this kind stuff (like me lol). But if you have an easier or more preferable way of doing it then go ahead because there’s no one way to make zines.
Printing & Binding
Okay so printing is the hardest part, in my opinion. I personally don’t have a great printer and I’m totally jealous of people that don’t have issues with this part but let’s be real most people don’t have high end printers. So if you have a normal printer you totally can print your zines on it, I’d suggest black and white so you don’t waste a ton of money but that’s up to you and your budget. (And trust me, no zinester cares if it’s B&W.) If you have access to a high end printer that’s even better and it’ll be easy for you.
If you don’t have either of these options you can easily just go to an Office Max-type place and print your pages out there. Find places that can do this in your area and compare prices because you might find some that are 10 cents a copy or 50 cents a copy and obviously you don’t want to spend a ton of money on this part. Also, look for deals on printing costs. And if you don’t have access to one of these places then you can upload the pages online and have it mailed to you.
Binding is also something you need to consider. Some people just do mini-zines which don’t require binding at all, some staple the pages, some sew them, some just hold the zine together with a thin ribbon. Again, do whatever is easiest for you. Most of these are pretty easy but sewing requires a bit of work, if you’d like to see how that’s done then here’s a guide.
Selling Your Zine
Okay hard part is done, now you want to sell your zine? First, figure out the cost. I’m just telling you now, you’re probably not going to make an enormous amount of money doing this but you’ll probably be able to make enough to keep the zine going if those are your plans. Or you can hand them out for free and just ask for donations. Whatever you want.
Look for zine events in your area, or events that you think would benefit from you tabling there (not necessarily zine related). Most big cities will have a zine fest every year and I’d definitely suggest signing up. If you’re far from one then I’d still suggest talking to the organizers because they might be able to get you there. (For example, the zine fest in my town puts funds aside when their fundraising to fly people out or house them.) You can put them in your local coffee shop for free, if you’d like. I’d also suggest looking for a zine distro in your area to try to sell them there. Some libraries will also hold zines from around the country and you can send them there (the San Diego Central Library is one and they accept them from all over).
(If you do end up making your zine please contact me again and I can give you the address to my local zine distro that I help out with. They will sell your zines or you can donate one or two to the distro’s zine library. If you talk to the owner you can also let them know if you’d like all the money made to go to you or if you’d like to split it to support the shop. Anyone else interested can also message me.)
E-Zines
Okay so if you’re able to there is also the option to make your zine readable online. You can do this along with your printed zine or just do it completely online. You can make this as a website or in PDF form and again, you can decide how you want this to go. The PDF can be free or you can charge x-amount and then send it through email. I’m not very good at this but if you know how to do all the stuff that this type of zine needs then go for it.
Okay I think that’s it. Hope this helped.

Light a Lantern in My Heart (3/?)
Title: Light a Lantern in My Heart
Part: 3/?
Summary: Scorpius really wanted to date Albus Potter. Halley, thankfully, is the same.
Words: 2,014
If you’d like to read it on another site: HPFT | AO3
On one quiet morning, as Scorpius, Al, and she are eating breakfast, it occurs to Halley that for all the time all three of them have been dating, they’ve never been on a proper date.
Yeah, sure, she and Scorpius have went on several dates, but she couldn’t say the same for all three of them together.
So, on that very same morning, she got in her head that, yes, they are all indeed going to go on a date, preferably soon.
There is one wrinkle in Halley’s plan however: is there a Hogsmeade day coming up? Of course, today is a Saturday, but there is never any guarantee.
She realizes that it’s a clichéd first date, but there is a reason why it is a cliché: it works, and serves its purpose just fine.
Halley frowns. But does she really want their first date to be at Hogsmeade? It could be rather boring; all the sites at Hogsmeade have long since lost the wonder they had when all three of them were third years, and had gained their first bit of independence.
She shakes her head, it’d have to do for now, unless Scorpius or Al had better ideas.
“Knut for your thoughts?”
Halley breaks out of her thoughts, and turns her attention to Al, who had asked the question.
“Oh, just that we’ve never been on a date before. Not a real proper one anyway,” Halley answers him, popping a grape in her mouth.
“Oh.” Al frowns, and then nudges Scorpius, who’s off in his own mind. He startles. “We’ve never been on a date.”
Scorpius opens his mouth to refute it, but closes it in doubt. “Oh. We should probably fix that.”
Halley smiles, glad both of them agree. She leans forward subconsciously, and says, “What do you suppose we do, then?”
“I mean, there’s always Hogsmeade…” Scorpius says quietly, shrugging indifferently.
Al’s face twists unpleasantly. “Maybe not. Today’s not a Hogsmeade day.”
Scorpius raises his eyebrows, as does Halley. Scorpius asks, “You want to go today?”
Al smiles guiltily. “Sure, why not?”
Halley hums in thought, propping her chin into her palms, so that her hands are cupping her face. “Have anything in mind?”
“I don’t know,” Al admits, hanging his head a little bit. “But I do know a place, and its right here.”
Intrigued, Scorpius tilts his head in question.
Seeing this, Al continues, “The Room of Requirement, on the seventh floor, I think.”
Halley lights up. “I’ve heard of that! I’ve never been though.” She deflates.
Al grins. “I know courtesy of my father.”
“I see… When do you suppose we go then?” Scorpius asks, shifting in his seat.
Halley jumps up. “Right now!”
Scorpius startles, and glances around warily for people who had noticed. Except for a select few, most kept to themselves, thankfully.
Al gets up with the same enthusiasm. He has too much of a penchant of playing along with her, though this is a fact that makes Halley a little bit proud, mostly of how much they’ve become familiar with each other.
Al grabs Scorpius’ hand, and gently tugs him along. Halley joins the two on the other side of the Slytherin table, and takes in her hand Al’s free hand.
They arrive at the seventh floor, seemingly where the Room of Requirement would be. Al stops abruptly, and tells Halley to walk in front of the empty expanse of the wall three times all while thinking of what she wants the room to be.
Scorpius looks at Al strangely, and Al gives him the same look back. “What?”
“Those are some oddly specific directions…”
Halley had to agree.
Al rolls his eyes good-naturedly. “I know. Just do it.”
Halley does so, thinking of how she wants to remember their first date.
A few seconds later, a seemingly innocuous door appears, and Halley steps back in surprise.
Tentatively, Halley twists the door knob, and inside is a large room, filled with… art supplies?
Al ducks inside and looks around.
“How do you suppose this’ll work out as our first date?” Al asks, staring straight at Halley.
She bristles. A little defensively, she replies, “I don’t know. I guess I was just thinking of how I wanted a keepsake or something handmade from you two, and this is what came up.”
Scorpius looks around. “That’s a good idea.” He faces Halley, giving her a teasing smile. “You’re such a sap, though.”
Halley swats at Scorpius’ arm playfully, and he feigns hurt.
She sticks her tongue out at him.
“If you two are done flirting with each other...” Al raises an amused eyebrow at them, leaning at the edge of the entrance on his shoulder.
Halley turns to him, a smile on her lips. “Aww, does somebody want attention?”
“W-what? No. Ugh! Just get in.”
Al walks further into the expansive room, and goes to a corner with illustration board and stacks of magazines, while Scorpius steps towards the clay.
Halley chooses to walk to the cardstock, and grabs whatever she thinks she might need.
She dumps the stuff in her arms unceremoniously on to the table (how didn’t she notice the table before?) where Al and Scorpius had taken place, both of which had begun whatever they came up with.
Halley didn’t really know what Al is doing, but he seems to be having fun with it. He kept ripping out pages of the magazines, and cutting out specific parts. He put them all aside, and continues perusing through the stack of zines he had gotten.
Scorpius, on the other hand, seems interested in squishing the clay around, and making obscure shapes.
“Have any new stories to tell, Al?” Halley asks curiously.
Al snorts. “Do I? Of course I do. Well, I’ve told you about my sister right?”
“Yeah,” Scorpius says, joining in. “I like her, from what you’ve told us.”
Al laughs. “Yeah, so anyways, there’s this boy that always sits where she does...”
Halley listens intently, all while working on her keepsake.
Not long later, Halley is surprised to find out that a good chunk of time had gone by, because she’s done with her card, which is well made if she says so herself.
She glances to Al and Scorpius, both whom were now messing around with their wands. Al is cleaning up his workspace, which had gotten rather messy over the duration they’d been here. Scorpius is waving his wand over his clay… items to fire and glaze it with color and design.
Halley isn’t quite sure what to call what Scorpius made, though she’s sure that he’ll explain.
Al seats himself, finally, after finishing. “I feel like I’m in Pre-K, again, doing arts and crafts.”
“Pre-K?” Scorpius asks, looking curiously at Al.
“Yeah, um, it’s like a school where little kids go to learn their basic maths, alphabet, and etcetera. In arts and crafts we usually presented what we made.”
“That sounds so dumb. But whatever,” Halley says, sliding the card across the table over to Al, Scorpius side eying it.
He takes it into his hands with a gentler care than what she expects. He stares, a little wide eyed at it, and then breaks out into a large grin. His following words are a jumble of phrases that Halley puts together as ‘how the fuck did you do it?’
She giggles at Al’s excited chattering, and Scorpius muffles a laugh into his sleeve.
Noticing, Al flushes, and ends with, “But, no seriously, how did you? It’s so precise! Did you cut the letters out on your own? Oh, it must have been so hard though.”
Halley nods, smiling. The letters Al was referring to was the message she wrote, which reads out ‘Here’s to our first date.’ She isn’t really that good with coming up with meaningful messages or lines, but she knows the effort she put into it alone would have impressed Al. On the inside, were just tiny doodles of the three of them which she charmed into moving across the card.
It isn’t really much of anything, yet, it swells Halley’s heart (okay, and maybe her ego too) to see Al’s genuine candor and excitement.
Al possesses a resting bitch face that could probably put the fear of God in everyone, but it awes Halley how easily his personality came out.
He turns his attention to Scorpius. “And you?”
Rather shyly, he places the plate and cup before him, and gestures to it. “I guess I decided to be a Potter today.”
Al takes on a look of confusion.
The joke dawns on Halley, and gives a choked laugh. She says, still giggling, “Yeah, I guess he was.”
Al is the last one to get the pun, but when he does, he sits down and buries his face into his arms, shoulders shaking.
When he looks up, Halley sees tears had formed in the corners of his eyes.
“Wow,” Al says, traces of amusement still in his voice, “okay—” He cuts himself off with a giggle. Who knows that Albus Potter could be so dorky and giggly? Al picks up the cup, and holds it up next to his face. “Look, it even matches my eyes!”
Scorpius’ shy smile grows. “I know. That’s why I chose it.”
Al bites his lip, and Halley just knows a blush had took over Scorpius’ face.
"It's beautiful," Al says, sincere and wondrous all at the same time. "I don't think you knew I love flowers, but I really love flowers so this is like, amazing. I'm sorry—I don't know how else say it. Can I use them?"
Scorpius nods. "They're yours to keep."
Al merely beams at him. “And, um, here’s what I made you two…” He turns over the board that had been upside down on the table, and Scorpius snatches it up before Halley could.
She comes up from behind Scorpius, and places her head on his shoulder, and takes in the collage before her.
There were two people on the top half, seeming to be facing towards a rising sun, and on the bottom half, the two people on the top half were reflected. Every few seconds or so, the bottom half flickered into having three people.
Halley isn’t really sure how Al made scraps of magazine paper into something as cohesive as this, but he did. The magic is really cool, and she assumes that the people on the collage were meant to be them three.
Scorpius is the first one to speak, a little awed. “Al.”
“Hmm?” Al replies shortly. He’s looks sort of fidgety.
“This is amazing,” Scorpius says matter-of-factly. “I don’t really know if I can keep this…”
Decisively, Halley takes the illustration board, and tells Scorpius, “I sure can. Buddy, this is fucking gold.”
His hands fall limp, though he still smiles.
Observing Al, he seems unable to keep his grin from growing wider. He is even blushing.
Then, Halley says honestly, “I know I’m bad at, like, saying how I feel, but thank you so much, really. The idea is really creative, and I think it was a nice touch, what you did with the magic.”
Al nods. He thinks something over, and then goes over to the other side of the table, and hugs the both of them simultaneously.
Surprised as she is, she hugs back, with one arm, the other wrapping around Scorpius.
Al mumbles something that sounds something like ‘You know I like you both, right?’
Halley snorts, and says yes, while Scorpius agrees.
Al is the first to break away, and frowns. Regretfully, he tells them, “I think we have to go now. We’ve spent the whole day in here.”
Both Halley and Scorpius agree grudgingly, and left the Room of Requirement. Quietly, Al parts from them, stating that he had to go and meet with his siblings.
Halley separated from Scorpius when they went to their respective dorms.
The first thing she does is put the collage next to her bed, and charm it carefully so that it couldn’t be damaged.

Art F City: This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Skip Most Fairs, See The Real Hennessy Youngman
Jayson Musson
Plan comfortable shoes for the week: it’s another inundation of art fairs and satellite events.
Thankfully, Frieze and SPRING/BREAK’s new Brooklyn offshoot are the only big fairs we’re recommending by now, so fair fatigue shouldn’t be too much of a problem. But of course, the city is packed with art star openings, book launches, and more brunches than you can shake a croissant at. We’ve done you the favor of skimming only the best of the best events this week though, to save you from too much overload.
Highlights include Roxy Paine’s creepy interiors at Paul Kasmin Tuesday night, Martin Roth’s Twitter-fed lavender farm at the Austrian Cultural Forum on Wednesday, and Jon Rafman’s screening and book launch at Printed Matter on Thursday. If you’re not fair-pooped after Friday, check out Salon 94’s demon-wrestling solo show from Jayson Musson (of “Hennessy Youngman” fame) on Saturday and Columbia MFA candidates paying tribute to Walter Benjamin at the Jewish Museum on Sunday.
So much more below…

Roxy Paine: Farewell Transmission
The first time I saw a photo of Roxy Paine’s dystopian dioramas, I assumed they were room-sized installations. Her work has an uncanny realism, wherein institutional blandscapes are rendered with such precision that the only things missing are the real world’s ubiquitous logos. In this show, she’s taking over both of Paul Kasmin’s 10th Avenue galleries. In one piece, a bedroom appears to be under surveillance from a two-way mirror for some pseudo-scientific or institutionally voyeuristic end. In another, a group of mismatched chairs is arranged in a depressing room (complete with faux drop ceiling) and folding table with coffee. It looks like a 12 step program is about to begin, eerily devoid of participants. You’ll definitely want to attend, though, even if the viewing experience makes you feel a little icky and complicit in some sinister plot.

Eric Fischl: Late America
I know a lot of people who aren’t big fans of Eric Fischl, and a lot of people who are. I have personally never had a strong feeling about most of his work one way or another, until Jerry Saltz described the titular piece, “Late America,” of these new post-election paintings as such:
“I read the painting a dozen different ways, all of them bigger than just a story of a man in a weird pose by a swimming pool, a boy, and a couple of workers. I saw dozens of different American narratives unfold. All the figures are male, so this is a story of the wreck of masculinity, something bankrupt, buckling, sick, unconscious of everything around it. Especially in the naked man, who is totally somaticized, I see an empire ending in an infantile whimper, a country identified by the heroism and pain it is forgetting, turning inward, being consumed by itself, pampered, deluded, duped, marooned, and wishing for stronger others to make quick fixes and take dramatic actions, to show the self-confidence that they lack, and to make those they feared go away by turning them into objects of open hatred and discrimination. So that we can be great again. Or forget that we haven’t lived up to our own expectations.”
It really is a phenomenally evocative work, and I’m excited there’s apparently more where that came from. The mysterious dramas here play out around suburban swimming pools, and I’d much rather be seeing these than more paintings set in art fairs, especially this week.
Wed
Austrian Cultural Forum New York
11 East 52nd Street New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:30 PMWebsite
Martin Roth: Exhibition Opening, Book Launch & Artist Talk
For roughly two months, a subterranean forest will sprout in the basement galleries of the Austrian Cultural Forum. At the center of this installation, a lavender field will grow under artificial lights. These lights are regulated by the Twitter activity of opinion-shapers. All that angry online bickering will, through a complicated-sounding mechanism, translate to the cultivation of lavender, which has medicinal properties to relieve stress.
This is the latest outdoors-indoor project from Martin Roth, whose 2015 installation of parakeets, frogs, rubble, and water in Louis B James we covered. At the Austrian Cultural Forum, Roth will be launching a new book and speaking about his work starting at 6, followed by a reception at 7.
Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1
Furman Street at Old Fulton Street Brooklyn, NY 6:30 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Anish Kapoor: Descension
It sounds like a satirical headline from The Onion, but Anish Kapoor is installing a swirling black vortex of doom in Brooklyn. The piece promises to be the next big selfie magnet of public art, so try to get there early. Tickets to the opening reception are $10, which is probably worth it to stare into a bottomless whirlpool of sinister black liquid on the East River waterfront.
Lever House
390 Park Avenue New York, NY 8:00 PM - 9:00 PMWebsite
MIDTOWN X FlucT
For fans of midcentury modern design, dance, and artists/designer hybrids such as the late Vito Acconci, this is going to be the week’s highlight.
Bushwick/Baltimore dance duo FlucT never disappoint. Here, they’ll be interacting with design objects and sculptures curated into the office spaces of the historic Lever House. The line-up of featured artists and designers is a doozy:
Vito Acconci, Anton Alvarez, Leonor Antunes, Thomas Barger, Jarrod Beck, Huma Bhabha, Carol Bove, Scott Burton, Nick Cave, Barbara Chase-Riboud, James Crosby, Alex Da Corte, Luca Dellaverson, Andile Dyalvane, Urs Fischer, Luis Flores, FlucT, Christina Forrer, Josep Grau-Garriga, Alex Hubbard, Dozie Kanu, Melike Kara, Jon Kessler, Rosy Keyser, Takuro Kuwata, Max Lamb, Kwangho Lee, Hannah Levy, Hanna Liden, Nate Lowman, Sarah Lucas, Carly Mark, Christine McHorse, Rodney McMillan, Marilyn Minter, Robert Morris, Senga Nengudi, Ruby Neri, Leon Niehues, Jo Nigoghossian, Jay Sae Jung Oh, Rick Owens, Virginia Overton, Anna-Bella Papp, Gaetano Pesce, Jessi Reaves, Max Hooper Schneider, Kenzi Shiokava, Lucien Smith, Keith Sonnier, Ryan Sullivan, Oscar Tuazon, Betty Woodman, Haegue Yang, Daisy Youngblood, Andrea Zittel, and Joe Zucker.

Metropolitan Museum of Art
1000 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10:00 AM - 5:30 PMWebsite
Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between
Rei Kawakubo: Art of the In-Between famously opens to celebrities and other really rich people on Monday night’s gala. For everyone else, it remains one of the most hotly-anticipated exhibitions of the year. The famously mysterious Kawakubo has insisted that none of her critically-informed garments be accompanied by wall text. Instead, they’ll be grouped by opposing conceptual concerns in a futuristic landscape. Every image we’ve seen so far has been gorgeous. This one’s definitely going to be worth the lines.
Printed Matter
231 Eleventh Ave. New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Jon Rafman: Nine Eyes Screening and Book Launch
Here at AFC we’re quite proud of Jon Rafman’s “The Nine Eyes of Google Street View,” which to this day remains one of our most popular IMG MGMT commissions. That essay was the result of years of exploration via the Google Maps feature, catching glimpses of humanity’s weirdness and the built environment the world over. Fans of Rafman’s screen-grabbing post-photography will be happy to know he’s also applied his lens (so to speak) to video and a book on the subject. We can’t wait to get a copy!
Alessandro Berni Gallery | c/o ITALIAN GREEN DESIGN
530 West 25th Street New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
CITY BITES
For fans looking to pay their respect to Vito Acconci this week, we’re in luck his work is in a handful of shows!
We’re not entirely sure what this show is about (CITY BITES sounds like a food delivery startup app) but curator Asya Rotella has sure put together an impressive lineup:
Carla Accardi, Vito Acconci, Maurizio Cattelan, Jacopo Degl’Innocenti (JAPA), Jamie Martinez, Gilbert Salinas, Cecilia Yaghoubi, Fu Wenjun

Randall’s Island Park
New York, NY 11:00 AM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Frieze Art Fair
Frieze is one of New York’s biggest art fairs, and now that NADA has made the questionable switch to Armory Week,, is really the only big one worth seeing this week.
Yes, it’s worth seeing. Of course there’s always a proliferation of art fair schlock, but Frieze makes a better effort than most commercial fairs to have high-quality booths. Plus, it’s an excuse to ride a boat to Randalls Island. How can you pass that up?
It opens to the public on Friday, but it runs all weekend.
Washington Square Mews
New York, NY 4:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
PRESS FEST!
Basically one big small-press-centric block party thrown by the Community of Literary Magazines and Presses [CLMP].
In their words: “Buy books. Party with publishers. Celebrate independent and international literature.”
If you like reading, this one’s a big obvious “duh”.
Sean Kelly
475 Tenth Ave New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Kehinde Wiley: Trickster
Kehinde Wiley needs no introduction. His art-historically-influenced portraits of mostly young black men are now part of the cannon, and we pretty much know what to expect. These will be big and colorful and great. This series is inspired by Goya, so expect plenty of drama!

POSTER Closing & Zine Release Party
Black Ball Projects has been hosting programming in response to Trump since the election. This project invited the public to contribute their protest signs, t shirts, and other ephemera to an installation that feels like a demonstration march. These pieces are being archived in a zine, which will be distributed at the closing. That should be a cool piece of history to take home.
Salon 94 Freemans
1 Freeman Alley New York, NY 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
Jayson Musson: Demon All Day
Jayson Musson, arguably better known as his YouTube alter ego Hennessy Youngman, is presenting a surprisingly conventional new series this week. Returning to his drawing roots, Musson has been exorcising some anxieties through illustration-like demon gauche paintings. They’re actually a really nice balance of considered composition and gestural brushwork, recalling sumi ink calligraphy, Grecian pottery, and numerous other art historical references.
City Point
300 Flatbush Avenue Extension Brooklyn, NY 7:00 PM - 10:00 PMWebsite
SPRING/BREAK: BKLYN IMMERSIVE
We can’t get enough of the curator-driven SPRING/BREAK Art Show, always the highlight during Armory Week. So it’s good news for us that they’ve launched a satellite event during Frieze Week as well!
BRKLYN IMMERSIVE will launch large-scale installation and public works at megaproject City Point in Downtown Brooklyn. They’re in keeping with the theme of “Black Mirror”, which was a hit at their Times Square fair, so we’re excited to see what that looks like when artists have the space to work at a larger scale.
The fair kicks off with a reception Saturday night, and will be up for a week.
Sun
The Jewish Museum
1109 5th Ave at 92nd Street New York, NY 6:30 PM - 8:00 PMWebsite
In Response: The Arcades
Walter Benjamin’s unfinished masterpiece “The Arcades Project” remains one of my personal favorite things to read. His unmatched capacity for observation has left quite an impression on the art world, and The Jewish Museum has a whole exhibition devoted to that legacy: The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin.
As part of the programming, Columbia University Visual Arts MFA candidates have been invited to produce works in dialogue with the show. These include performance, video, and installations, which will be presented in the Scheuer Auditorium.
Participating Artists: Ivan Forde, Davey Hawkins, Cary Hulbert, Daria Irincheeva, Emily Kloppenburg, Leah Moskowitz, Ana Rivera, Rocio Olivares, Emily Shaffer, Jacqueline Silberbush, Sara Stern
