peter burke is so funny bc he’s a completely normal guy except he’s been obsessed with two people to a point of stalking (his wife and the conman he chased for years) but it’s fine bc they’re just as obsessed with him 😭???

one of the funniest things about the small but very real white collar fandom is that there’s a split right down the middle where half the fandom adamantly believes that Peter is Neal’s dad, and half the fandom swears that Peter is Neal’s bi poly boyfriend. and neither of them are really wrong????

It just hit me that Peter is like the boss of a whole division of White Collar. Imagine you're an FBI agent and your boss has a pet conman who he breaks the law for and is constantly worrying over and spying on and they go to each others houses at odd hours. There's def a betting pool about them fucking

The great thing about the White Collar OT3 is that at no point does the introduction of Neal into El and Peter's everyday lives never feels like a threat to Peter and El's marriage.
Like from the moment Neal shows up at their house in episode one he and El hit it off.
Within the first 5 episodes Neal and El have figured out they have similar knowledge and interest in the finer things, they're sharing looks over how Peter talks about and will react to things, El is telling Peter to trust in Neal a little, Neal is helping make sure they have a lovely anniversary, and El is calling Neal in to mediate/help prove her point in mini arguments to make Peter do stuff.
They also work really well because while Peter, El, and Neal might all be slightly different flavours and intensities of hyper competent adrenaline junkie weirdos, all three of them are intensely loyal to "their people" so the second El and Neal recognised that they both trust Peter as someone who will always try to do the right thing and respect them they were like "oh green flag."

Crying because Neal Caffrey isn’t a runner. He doesn’t actually want to run. He wants to be chased. He wants to be seen, preferably by one Peter Burke.
The cons alone are not enough for Neal. Sure he enjoys them, gets a rush off a particularly complex one, but mostly he wants to be noticed. He wants to impress, leave a mark like the artists he admires so much.
Neal was raised in witsec for the great majority of his childhood. He was raised to vanish in a crowd, pass as unremarkable and unmemorable. Never leave an impression. So naturally, when he left he started doing everything he could to prove that he was alive. He existed. He was here. He mattered. Any attention is good attention to him (similar to a toddler).
Then Peter shows up and notices him. And then Peter stays. He chases Neal for years and no one has ever made Neal feel more alive or more known. That feeling is addicting. Neal doesn’t want to run. He wants Peter to chase him. He wants Peter to keep pushing him and teasing him and seeing him and wanting him. Peter loves that Neal Caffrey (specifically) is in the world and no one has ever wanted that before.

thinking about the genuine SHOCK Peter has when Neal tells him that he wasn’t valedictorian. Like that was information Peter whole heartedly believed as if it was concrete knowledge, even though he knew nothing about Neal before the age or 18 at that point in time.
It’s such a little moment, and I’m sure I’m not supposed to take so much away from it, but the little line shows the absolute depth of how smart and good Peter genuinely thinks Neal is. Neal has been a crook and a conman the entire time Peter’s known him, a social charmer with art skills that allowed him to do whatever he wanted. To me, I think it would’ve been more expected for Peter to believe Neal would be a class skipping delinquent.
But no. Peter, whole heartedly until that moment, believed Neal was VALEDICTORIAN. He believed not only that Neal would’ve had the grades for it, but also that the teachers would’ve been willing to give him that accolade.
And THEN he’s even MORE SHOCKED to learn that he didn’t even GRADUATE.
Like, as far as Peter knows about Neal, the man showed up on the radar at 18 and started his life of crime. What about ANY of that information reads high school valedictorian. But Peter never even doubted the possibility until Neal rejects the idea!!!!
