Main rapper of itzy. Met karina at some award show and tells everyone, including her fans, that they’re dating as a ‘joke’ but sometimes takes it too far. Kind of jealous about y/n since it’s karinas newest obsession aside of shinchan.

Kai / jeongin

Main dancer of exo. Met karina in SM building for a challange and became close after “hot & cold” performance. Became friends easily, don’t know how. very babygirl-fied guy and one of the sassy man apocalypse proud leader.

Jeno

Main rapper of NCT DREAM and NCT U. met karina in sm building walking around and just approached her, out of blue. Supportive friend of rina and only guy in the friend group with jeongin. (i dont know much about nct so he's here for the kicks :3)

I'll make an exeption and write not about NCT. This case is interesting in showing what SM idols can evolve into as solo artists, what topics SM can support.

Taemin is known as an idol who debuted at the age of 14 y.o. as a dancer, but who made himself into a vocalist. He debuted as solo first in his group, however, it took him several albums to be able to have his artistic way. Same as Taeyeon he was curated a lot in the beginning. I believe the success of older idols like him made it possible for the company (or LSM originally) to trust in newer artists like Taeyong more, put energy in developing their skills as songwriters and composers.

Taemin's "Guilty" trailer , mood clip and MV.

The majority of what I will write down was noticed by my friend @jan-fm. Some observations are taken from Russian forums, a couple of mine. I won't go too much into detail, there should be plenty of analyses by Taemin's fans out there.

First of all, the MV is multilayered. The trailer and the promotional pictures serve as keys to the story.

The main plot: Taemin and other children (school uniform, shorts) are brought to a facility that looks like a psychiatric ward or a boarding school for "difficult" children (doors with locks, guards in white, the children have short hair, "children's drawings of a "happy family" have everyone with sticks in their hands)). The children are victims of abuse (Taemin's shots with the guards) who grow up, rebel and become abusers themselves (they kill guards, burn things, men sexually assault women in their group (the solo part with a male dancer pouncing on a female dancer who tries to skitter away, but is taken by force anyway)). Taemin goes through his angst and becomes the bird-snake god Abraxas (the idea of the union of the good and the evil in a human soul, he is the creator and the destroyer of the world, the darkness and the light).

The main theme: taboo topics that people can't talk about because they are being shut up by society or they stay silent about it themselves (the hand over mouth gesture in the choreo). Such as: psychological problems and traumas, homosexuality, sexual coersion, maybe pedophilia, etc.

The facility can be interpreted in many ways: the school, the society of adults, conversion camp, the army.

Taemin plays several roles, the same story can be viewed from different POVs: the victim (and the lover), the observer, the seducer.

In his recent talk with Suga Taemin said that he came to terms with himself being androgynius (internally, not just outwardly). In the "Guilty" MV he plays both genders. The female lead is both his love interest and he himself (same hair). In the trailer he is throwing water at a female student, but is absent with a male student. In the MV in the role of the seducing god he is both with a female (the neck) and a male (sits atop of him, top bank bed). The story of "runaway lovers who take pictures of each other" (the mood clip) can be viewed as a hetero love story (the female is the one who takes the pictures) or as a gay story (female clothes are absent in the background, a lot of cigarettes).

Subplots: the suicide of a boy, Taemin's trauma, Taemin combining all of his sides (the victim, the abuser, the good, the evil) and emerging as a god (the dance in the pink torn to shreds clothes (looks like flesh/body), the dress has snake scales on the sleeves=snake legs of Abraxas).

When children are brought to the facility, they stand in 3 groups: boy/girl, two girls, two boys. Couples. In a blink-and-gone shot it's two girls sitting in a room alone, lesbians. Taemin is given a gun to shoot someone out of frame. After he does it, he collapses, clings to the guard (adult) and self-harms (the fingers digging into the knee).

The suicide is shown in the trailer. A boy slowly walks to the white car, stops and makes a decisive step. In Asia a lot of teenagers end up their life by throwing themselves from roofs, bridges and under an upcoming train. In movies, the act is often shot at the level of the feet, the final step into the abyss. When Taemin dances in the MV at the same spot, he makes gestures of killing oneself (hanging on a rope, breaking the neck).

As the story goes, Taemin was somehow connected to the boy's death. Was he his lover (seduced and "ruined" by him, the toxic/forbidden love in the song)? Was he made to out him? ("killing" him before other students, outing in school). Or did he want to follow the example (his inner demons dance)? Was he an observer and was punishing himself for not acting and helping somehow the situation? Open to interpretation.

There is a lot of sexualisation of Taemin who plays a teen in both the trailer and the MV. Is he a seducer (the toxic/forbidden love) or a victim/the one being seduced? What is his trauma? Only his inner demons and the need to combine all his sides in one, to love oneself, or there was a traumatic episode he alluded to in the MV?

The promotional pictures and the album design show a melted ice cream (popsicle: getting sexual satisfaction from a human body), cacti with thorns (endurance, inner strength) and flowers (death, love, maturity), crocuses (rebearth, innocence, new-beginning), green grapes (the unity between the human and the god). More and more layers to the concept.

To sum it up. As you see, a song that at first seems to be about toxic love has underlayers and other readings. The MV is an example of a video that can be shown to general public who won't see anything unusual, but that hides a message for those who want to look deeper.

The waiting room was chilly to avoid having idols sweating, he was told. He was definitely closer to freezing to death than sweating.

“Should I get you a coat?” His manager asked, one hand on the doorknob, ready to make a run for his dorms.

“Please.” Just as he opened the door, an unfortunate person crashed against it, letting out a small ‘ouch’.

“Sorry!”

“It’s alright. I'm sure you just straightened my nose.” It was a melodious voice, unfamiliar to the boy sitting in the makeup chair. “I’m here to get Sungchan ready.” At the use of his name, he turned around. A beautiful woman stood in front of his manager, showing her staff badge.

“Oh, yes! Thank you for coming on such short notice. His stylist caught a cold.”

“It’s fine. The boys didn't have any events today.”

“I’ll leave you alone while I go get him a coat. Good luck with his hair. It tends to be a bit rebel.”

“I’ll do my best.” For the first time since your arrival, you glanced at him, giving him the prettiest smile he'd ever seen. Suddenly, the room wasn't so cold anymore. “Hello, I'm y/n, WayV’s makeup artist. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve heard wonders about the new member.”

“O-oh, yeah.”

“I’ll start now.” You finally said at the lack of words from the idol.

You started by adding concealer, fingers gently tapping the bags under his eyes. Your touches were so light, so careful, that had him turning into putty between your hands. You pretended not to notice the evident blush in his cheeks nor his eyes constantly drifting to your lips. You then proceeded to grab a palette and a brush, carefully adding some color to his eyelid.

“How long have you been working for SM?” The sudden question had the brush falling out of your hands.

“Sorry.” You excused yourself while picking the tool up, replacing it with a clean one. “Perhaps a year, I’m not really sure. I was hired before WayV’s debut.”

“That was way more than a year ago.” You giggled, brushing his eyelid with glitter to give his eyeshadow the final touches.

“Time flies when I'm with them. It's always full of laughter whenever I do their makeup.” You used a piece of cotton to wipe the edges of his eyes. “Done. Let's move on to the hair.”

He was surprised by your speed, or perhaps the time seemed to go by faster in your company.

“I must warn you, I'm not a genius when it comes to hairstyling. I’ll just go for something simple, alright?”

“Sure.”

While you straightened his silky hair, your hands occasionally brushed his sensitive ears, making him smile as he listened to your non-stop ranting.

“I remember the time when I let them do my hair while we waited for the show to begin. Look, I still have the mark where they burnt my ear with the straightener.” You leaned over his shoulder, tucking the strands of hair behind your ear to show off the red mark. The proximity was more than inappropriate for a stylist and an idol, yet, Sungchan seemed amused. The shy boy you met when you first came into the room was gone.

“You can always switch with my stylist if they're mistreating you.” Oh, how badly he hoped you'd accept his proposal.

“We can do that every once in a while. I could use a break from all that chaos.” You started to notice his dangerous grin, taking your distance to avoid giving him any wrong ideas. “Ready. Let me just put some spray on.”

He was sad your time together was close to being over. He wanted to hear your chatter for a bit longer.

“Can I have your phone number?” Perhaps it was his age that made him impulsive, but he didn't regret asking.

“I don't think that's a good idea, Sungchan.”

“Why? We can be friends. You seem to have a good relationship with WayV.”

“But I'm their stylist. I'm just filling in for yours today.” You petted his hair, proceeding to start packing your materials.

“Noona.” An explosion of heat occurred in your cheeks at the use of the informal nickname. “Let’s exchange phone numbers.”

“I need to get going. It was a pleasure working with you.”

“Noona.” He tried again to no avail. You were already walking out the door.

The next few weeks, Sungchan stalked you like he had no other thing to do. It wasn't unusual to see him walking around WayV’s practice room, expecting to meet you again.

“Noona!” You couldn't deny the fact that you liked the nickname. His sweet voice seemed to add a certain spice to it. “I brought you tiramisu, your favorite. Our auntie helped me bake it yesterday.”

“Sungchan...” You grabbed the container reluctantly, adjusting the strap of your bag while at it. “You can't bribe me with cake, you know?”

“I can try.” The tall boy blocked your way to one of the dressing rooms. You had to style the members for a video. “I know you like me too, so why not give me your number? Is it because I'm younger?”

“You’re making this harder for me.” Your plump cheeks seemed extremely tempting to pinch. “I’ll lose my job if I engage in a romantic relationship with any of you.”

“You won't, we can talk to Mr. Lee and-”

“It’s not something we can change. It was specified in my contract.” You allowed your hand to caress his soft ear, having noticed how much he liked to be touched there while doing his hair. “Stop doing this, alright? It’s not going to happen, no matter how much we both want it.”

“So you do want it to happen?” A cheeky smile appeared on his lips as he rushed to plaster his palm over your hand, stopping you from retrieving it. “If I find a way to make it happen, will you give me your number?”

I’ve never paid too much attention to wayv because my main group in nct is nct 127. It’s not like I don’t keep track of them either because they are a part of the brand so if anything happens weeks or months go by I’ll find out about something from them. I also don’t pay attention to dream or wish but the process is still the same. I think it’s funny how much I miss.

Anyways with this comeback things changed. The lighter, somewhat cute concept grabbed my attention and I kept up with some of the concept photos released. I didn’t listen to the highlight melody or teaser so I went in completely blind to how it sounded. I liked the song instantly and listened to the mini album (my favorite song is don’t get mad). They’ve done a great job rebranding because they have my attention and I’m struggling to choose a bias (can’t decide between yangyang or ten). I think I’ll be more casual than how I am with 127 but so far I like what I’m seeing and hearing.

"Give me that" shift in concept reminded me 127's "Touch". Therefore, I think WayV will comeback to sexy/cool concepts again (I doubt they will be back to "Moonwalk" or "Love talk" type of songs though). Their music has been changing over several albums. The new album is the most light and cheerful. I think their sound has been found. The last two minis are very similar in approach.

Are you aware Ten&YY have a single?

WayV debuted with a double concept because it was (still is?) a unit heavy on the lore. So we had cute "WayV from the past" originally, but it's been amiss for many years. This comeback's concept reminded me the snippets I see on X from their fanmeets (they do a lot of funny covers, dress up), that's why it looks to me SM is blending their on-screen image with their off-screen image. "Phantom"is a good example of mismatch (Except Kun and Xiaojun).

Let's see how it will proceed.

Taeyong, Doyoung, Yuta, Jaehyun - they all fit 127 neoness very well (cool cold looks, futuristic). Even Jungwoo is figurable (he kind of doesn't have a strong character (I'm not using the word in bad sense) to him? He is soft and ready to change). Jaemin, Chenle, Jisung - make Dream cheerful/youthful in appearence (round faces, warm smiles, giggles, pranks). Sakuya, Ryo, Yushi, Sion, even Riku - make Wish cupid-like, silly, bubbly, cuddly. WayV guys, however, are funny troublemakers, pranksters, so the cool cosmic rebels image didn't really fit. Like Hendery has the face of a prince, but can't pull off a prince, there is no royalness in him, heh. Jaehyun doesn't even need to try, just put on a resting face.

SM always gave idol images to their artists. However, I think the people there learnt that following the natural traits of the idols is better. For example, yes, aespa girls fake their bubbly speech, but three of them are really good at shifting to stage personas (well, two, NingNing doesn't live the stage, heh). Many good trainees were let go because there was a strict selection for the ambitious concept. The girls need to act, do stunts, be good models, it-girls.

Lan Wangji, Sir, I’m Sorry

So, today my friend ranted about the changes in NCT Dream and how she feared that SM Entertainment might end up letting go of her favorite Chinese member to the Chinese management forever. It leads to us talking about weird marketing directions and the resulting alienation of the non-Chinese fans. 

In the middle of that conversation, I found myself coming back to that time when I criticized the danmei’s characterization of Lan Wangji and his romantic plot with WWX up to chp. 59. Needless to say, the reactions I got were rather…..curious to say the least (more on that later). 

After that painful trip down the memory lane, I decided to sit down and put into words what was it that made me stray away from Lan Wangji as a character and eventually the MDZS fandom as a whole. Now after some thought and seeing the matter through new perspectives, I’m ready to put this case to rest.

After some time away from the fandom, I began to watch the first season of the donghua, which, surprisingly endeared me to Lan Wangji’s character. It shows that, on his own, Lan Wangji actually has the potential to be a solid, complex, and relatable character (which, in my opinon, was in no small part thanks to the animation team, the show’s writers, and his outstanding voice actor). Therefore, I conclude that my troubled impression of Lan Wangji of the novels may have stemmed from factors related to the writing style (since the POV is exclusively Wang Wuxian’s) and other stuff lost in translation (although Exiled Rebels Scans’ translation was nothing but excellent), and me just being more interested in Wei Wuxian’s platonic relationships with other characters.

In any case, I understand that other fans find Lan Wangji (in any incarnation) an appealing character and a good romantic lead for Wei Wuxian. I respect their opinions because everybody deserves to be part of the fandom despite having different opinions.

But marketing-approved fandoms are where opinions and healthy discussions go to die. Especially if the producers or creators make demographic-pandering decisions that alienate portions of their fanbase. Especially if said creators micromanage what their own fans can and cannot produce (even ships, apparently). 

And everything is made worse when the majority endorses their behavior and overtakes nearly the entire fandom by driving away other camps that voice objections to those decisions. Meanwhile, the creators continue to shower fans with loads of fanservice dedicated to the remaining demographic. What results is a symbiosis that not only alienates part of their audience but also ensures that newcomers from different demographics will never feel comfortable within the fandom.

That, my friends, is my impression of the MDZS fandom —now entirely converted to WangXian hell. And my plunge into the SVSS fandom further confirms that.

You see, I’ve been following SVSS fan artists on Instagram and while they do make MDZS art once in a while, I never follow artists or artwork-stealing fan accounts that exclusively post MDZS content. Still, this doesn’t keep Instagram algorithms from flooding my explore tab with WangXian pictures and nothing else, aside from the occasional Jiang Cheng or Jing Lin fanart. Thankfully, the whole thing died down a bit once the donghua’s second season and The Untamed drama came out  (not gonna lie, I’m thankful for C-Drama and x nine fans suddenly getting involved in the fandom and making Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo content).

Last year, out of curiosity, I looked around Youtube for MDZS video essays and came back empty-handed. While there are plenty of review videos, the most views they can get is at 95K. Needless to say, I don’t recall ever seeing big-name reviewers specializing in animated series (Gigguk, Mother’s Basement, Saberspark, etc.) pick up the donghua.  Which in my opinion is baffling since it made quite a scene among the Japanese BL fandom. And then I realized something.

To sum up what I feel about the MDZS donghua’s marketing as a foreigner: it’s a BL work made for MXTX’s loyal fujo fanbase. Not the Chinese-speaking or BL fans, mind you, just MXTX’s fujo fanbase.

The post I made (which mostly addressed my problems with LWJ’s characterization up to chapter 59) led to an interesting exchange with a Vietnamese fan who attempted to refute my opinions but couldn’t because of potential spoilers. I should probably chalk it up to the misfortune of reading slow-burn romance novels (which MDZS supposedly is) with untranslated chapters, but all direct responses to my post were all from people who share the same ideas, among them a fan who has read the novel from start to finish. 

To date, no one has ever approached me directly via DMs or reblogs in the defense of Lan Wang Ji’s characterization. It could be that my post is just too irrelevant to warrant replies or reblogs by other fans, but it sure didn’t stop people from making passive-aggressive posts that in no way address the points made by me or other LWJ critics directly.  

See, this is where the author-endorsed hive mind mentality rears its ugly head. As someone who didn’t immediately buy Lan Wangji’s setup as the romantic lead found it baffling at how quickly the English-speaking fans embraced him as the perfect Seme without question. It doesn’t help that we get bombarded by promotional pictures that fans quickly translate as Wangxian fanservice.

To be fair, the English fandom is directly influenced by English and Vietnamese speaking fandoms and the official materials they translate. However, I can’t accuse them of deliberately concealing information and refusing to translate promotional materials unrelated to Wangxian, because there are little to none, apparently. Which brings us to the bigger problem at hand.

Now, I don’t know if the donghua on its own has exploded outside of Weibo or Twitter (do tell me if you know), but it certainly doesn’t circulate well enough to be picked up by foreign audiences with no prior interest in BL, which is strange because the Donghua itself doesn’t contain the same amount of homoerotic elements, unlike the novels. It could be that Tencent is trying to protect its reputation to avoid association with a novel that is sure to put them in trouble with the Chinese government. 

But why wouldn’t it garner a cult following outside of China, especially with more and more people embracing same-sex relationships in media regardless of whether or not they’re hardcore BL fans? While I understand that Western fans may have trouble accepting some aspects of MXTX’s depiction of same-sex relationships, I think that everyone can still have a good time and make great content together while respecting each person’s preferences and values—

Oh. 

Well, my friend, to quote Anita Sarkeesian:

In case you mistake me didn’t get my point, the problem is not about the acceptability of MXTX’s depiction of her couples by Western fans, it’s her fans (Western, Eastern, what have you) that’s censoring discussions brought up by other fans and then deeming said fans unfit to stay in the fandom. 

Funnily enough, people in the SVSS fandom do frequently point out things they don’t like with the main pairing or the characters themselves without facing repercussions from fellow SVSS fans. I also never hear anything about TGCF fans being banned from shipping non-canon pairings. CMIIW though.

So, to sum things up, I find the MDZS fandom uncomfortable due to MXTX and her fans acting like inquisitors whenever somebody critiques her work or simply pointing out things they simply don’t sit well with.  

Cry all you want about me not being able to comprehend MXTX Chinese values and writing style, but I’ll have you know that I’m part of the SVSS fandom where everybody acknowledges that some parts aren’t for everyone due to language barriers and cultural dissonance and that’s FINE.

Type: Dance

Dance with an aesthetic meaning.  There is no clear story plotline running throughout.  It consists of them mainly dancing or interacting with sets, a clear view to just show off the members individual aspects rather than a story plotline.  It reminds of EXO’s tempo in that way.  A dance video with moments showing them growing up in the spotlight and trying to come into their own while under the pressure of the ones who came before them in SM, yet still thriving in their environment. 

Concept: Coming of Age - Modern

Okay, this one is actually hard for me to put in a specific category.  One because unlike Female Groups, there tends to only be really two or three different concepts for males.  Cute, Bad Boy/Gangster, or boyfriend material.  This is more of a coming of age, modern concept.  None of them were dressed in really the overall sexy way, yet everything was kept very young and fresh with a growth in sophistication.  Compared to We Go up! Which was more of a rebel in high school, this seemed to be more of a transition to college level students.  

This was made apparent for me in the way, they still appeared in style, sets, and overall interaction with each other. 

Budget: High 

This was a well funded music video, with several rich items and callbacks to previous SM Group music videos.  The underground parking lot, they use along with the car if I’m not mistaken is the same place where EXO’s Call Me Baby is from.  The white background with the flowers, reminds me of Shinee’s Good evening, with the royal concept, even reminds me Red Velvet's Be Natural.   

Execution: Fantastic! 

This felt very well thought off, in a way that showed them growing up and moving on from their previous more boyish themes like Chewing Gum.  It was very well executed in terms of dance, style, and cinematography.  For me, this felt like someone taking this music video as an artistic interpretation more than a literal translation.  

Did the Song fit the music video?

It did.  The song was more about the group themselves coming into their own as a group, achieving their dream and growing older.  Throughout the music video you can see the progression of members from being young to finishing in suits.  

Style of members: Great

What I liked the most was the evolution of them from more boyish clothes to more significant ones.  Starting off they are in more streets clothes, baggy, while throughout you see them start to get more tailored, and end up in suits.  Though I necessary wouldn’t have used the shoes they used in the last outfit change, mostly because on some of the boys it looked rather chunky, that was more of me nitpicking a minor detail.  It just looked hard to dance in for one of them. 

Also this is a good example of what to do with white.  White catches your eye, and everyone has a different degree of it.  It’s like a line, one has the most, then it decreases over time.  I don’t know if this is also the age growing older, but if it was that is a really cool styling choice!  

Things I didn’t like: 

When they put the guy in the full white outfit...in front of the bright white backdropping….come on! Did you not learn anything from the floating Siwon head in Devil Dance music video?

Most of the things I didn’t like was the choice in styling of one or two members.  The outfit, baggy shirt looked way to big, to the point he was more clothes then man, so it took away some of the dance element he would have shown.  

Things I liked: 

I loved the scenery.  Every set they used was beautiful.  Contrary to my previous dislike, the white backdrop was my favorite.  I loved the flowers all round and it highlighted each member (except one) perfectly.  

I was pleanstaly surprised by the song.  I enjoyed it a lot and will definitely add it to my playlist.  

Overall Rating: A- 

Overall, it was one or two things that I couldn’t give this music video an A+ or a A for, because of the fact that they seem to loose one of their members at one point.  Styling is important and can either hinder a dancer or enhance it.  The use of baggy clothes is mostly heavily used in hip hop themed which I understand is apart of the aesthetic, but in this music video, it didn’t work for one member.  To big and your swimming in it to the point that it hinders and takes away the effect you want it to have.  Because of how small his frame is, it reminded me of a kid who wanted to play dress up instead of the desired effect of looking cool.  From the context of the video, I didn’t think that was what they were going for.  

I hope SM keeps them as a unit, they seem to work well together.  So NCT Dream fighting!
