Entry 1 - Prior Knowledge and Workplace Assimilation.
My internship was a bit different to most other students in the course given I had already worked for a year at my chosen organisation.
It meant I was already familiar with the roles and responsibilities I would undertake as a journalist.
However, when I thought this year on top of my internship I would branch out and try other multimedia platforms to show ambition and my endeavour to learn and expand my knowledge of the industry.
This led to the creation of personal podcasts ‘Pillosophy’ and ‘Blake and Pills’.
Pillosophy was just myself and spoke about the sports I follow in Aussie Rules and cricket and detailed my own sporting experiences on the weekends.
Blake and Pills was produced with another Holmesglen student Blake Metcalf-Holt, who completed his internship at the Latrobe Valley Express. The podcast aimed to touch on junior pathways football and country sport broadening our knowledge of our community and sports in our surrounding areas.
The creation of the podcast then led to MIxxFM 106.3 approaching me to co-host the CDFNL Insiders with Colac Imperials head coach Paul Liistro which was more localised to the Colac region. This then led to a cricket podcast called Line and Length which focused on Colac district cricket. The podcasting then led to on-air calling of matches which meant I could add extra colour to my match reports or stories.
I would not have been able to go out on my own and explore other mediums of media without the support and knowledge working at the Colac Herald provided me.
Assimilation is defined by Miller (2018) as the continuous relationship between an individual member and an organisation. It is where employee learns the expectations and responsibilities of the roles they are to undertake. It also relates to the employee’s ability to understand information and add to the organisation (Miller, 2018)
It certainly didn’t take long to assimilate at the Colac Herald. I understood my role very early on by the tasks I carried out. I think it helped growing up in the area and being involved in local sporting clubs (and knowing who to know). I was able to pitch stories from news I had heard and transfer extra information into stories.
An example above is a story I wrote where former Nirranda premiership player Will Paulin, tagged former Carlton tagger Ed Curnow.
Tumblr media
I attended the game, then came into the Colac Herald office Monday and pitched the story and spoke to coaches about the matchup and how it influenced the game.
It is an example of me understanding my role and how to best use my knowledge to pitch ideas.
Green (2007) says assimilation is one of the most important issues facing employment today.
Growing up in the area I new which clubs were strong and had an involvement with the regions sport and community prior to my internship at the Colac Herald.
I think that helped immensely when it came assimilating into my workplaces culture.
I had the contacts before I came into the job and was able to add to that as I went along.
One thing I also prided myself on was being adaptability and being able to work in multiple facets. This meant that while I wanted to work in the sports department, I quite often worked in editorial and news because it was what the team required.

Coal Mining Overburden To Sand
Tumblr media
02 August 2024
The blatant misuse and indiscriminate mining of river sand has led to some drastic environmental impacts which we have seen over the last few years with embankment erosion and flooding of cities like it happened in New Delhi in 2023.
To protect the interest of our next generation in the time to come we need to look at alternative viable sources for construction grade sand.
Indian cement industry is second largest in the world with installed cement capacity of 600 million tons and production of 391 million tons of cement in 2022-23. Looking at these numbers with the production capacity of 391 million tons (PIB Feb 10, 2024), with the sand requirement being three times of this number which is close to 1.17 billion tons of sand, and this is just the requirement of the construction and infrastructure sector. Where is this going to come from!
To extract 1 ton of Lignite 7 tons of OB needs to be removed so the magnitude of the stockpiles available is huge. As per Ministry of Coal published figures 2468.61 million m3 of OB removal was made in the year 2022-2023 alone. This overburden has a tremendous potential to be converted into construction grade sand meeting the BIS Standard IS 383:2016.
Mining companies like NCL and NLC India have a substantial amount of overburden occupying a lot of land with growth of unwanted vegetation over a period. Over the long duration since the mines have been operational the overburden has been dumped at designated sites and now are running out of areas to stock the overburden. With the introduction of new technologies this so-called waste material can now be converted to a valuable product “Sand”. This conversion will help in supporting the growing demand of the infrastructure development and be an alternate to river sand mining which is extremely detrimental for the environment.
Northern Coal Fields and NLC India Limited have already given fruition to this by installing plants at their different sites with more such projects planned in the time to come. Similarly other CIL subsidiaries have also initiated the process and hopefully we would see a substantial shift into moving away from river sand to procuring sand from such sustainable sources.
CFlo as a part of their sustainable initiative have developed equipments that provide a solution to this. By processing the overburden through a crushing, screening, attrition and wet process MSand can be produced as per the BIS Standard IS 383:2016. The major highlights of this technology are maintaining coal and lignite and silt / clay as per the requirement of IS 383:2016
Zone Classification of Sand as per BIS IS 383:2016
BIS Standard as represented in Table 1 defines the quality of sand required for different applications in construction and this is done by maintaining the presence of correct sand grain size in each of the defined fractions as illustrated in the tables below. Normally Zone II sand is specified for concrete making in the construction industry. The level of <600 microns is a crucial factor and has to be maintained within the specified range as it effects the pumping of concrete. If due to inefficiency of the screening system in case of high moisture in feed, there is loss of -500+150-micron particle then the sand quality will not be acceptable to the users.600

Financial Model (ROI)
One of the most important thoughts that come to mind is the financial viability of such a project. With the scarce supply of quality sand, converting mining overburden to sand provides an excellent opportunity for the investor for fast return on investment due to the skyrocketing prices (Rs 1000-Rs 1800 per ton in some parts of India) of washed and graded quality sand. Below is a brief glimpse of a typical financial model for a 140-150 TPH OB to sand processing plant considering a nominal price of Rs 500 per ton for sand ex works.

History of Norwegian Capricorn Line
In the 1990s, P&O's Fairstar was the dominant local cruise ship in the Australian market. In an attempt to build an alternative Australian cruise presence, Norwegian Capricorn Line was founded in 1997 by a group of Australian cruise industry experts, in partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line.
Its foundation Managing Director was Sarina Bratton, who was highly regarded and highly visible in media and PR during the line’s existence.
Launching services in December 1998, the organisation traded under a revised Norwegian Capricorn name, yet it utilised the NCL logo, as services were run in close partnership with NCL.
Norwegian Capricorn Line chartered the 1973-built NCL cruise ship Norwegian Star for its services. Norwegian Star had a long history, commencing operations as Royal Viking Sea in 1973 for Royal Viking Line.
Tumblr media
Above Image: Norwegian Star CC BY SA 2.0 Aah-Yeah
The ship cruised with Royal Cruise Line as Royal Odyssey, before being transferred to NCL as Norwegian Star in 1997. She later repositioned to the Norwegian Capricorn brand.
Norwegian Capricorn Line ran the Norwegian Star with an 800-passenger capacity, and 400 crew. The vessel aimed to capture the 4-star local South Pacific cruise market with voyages from Australia and New Zealand.
By this time, Fairstar had been retired. She was replaced by the Fair Princess, which retained P&O's position as the dominant player in the region. To combat this, Norwegian Capricorn focused on marketing NCL's anytime dining service, special family cruise amenities and a robust onboard kids and teen program to differentiate them in the market.
Norwegian Star made her arrival into Australia in December 1998. By mid 1999 the ship had sailed 28 different itineraries.
The 25,000th passenger was given a free cruise as a thank you from the line, and later in 1999 the business reported bookings from more than 30,000 passengers.
Norwegian Capricorn was awarded the 'Cruise Operator of the Year' award in 1999 at the 'National Travel Industry Awards', and the cruise line later announced charter operations, with Sports Illustrated Magazine and Time Magazine renting Norwegian Star as a hotel ship during the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
youtube
But the competitive economics of the Australian operation was ever present, even in the early 2000s, and it was evidently very challenging for the new brand.
NCL’s February 2000 acquisition by Star Cruises didn't help things, and on 30 March 2000, NCL and Norwegian Capricorn announced the brand would cease operations in October 2000.
NCL took control of the final voyages in the Australian market, and made good on running the ship as a hotel vessel during the Olympic Games.
Norwegian Star’s final Aussie voyage ending on 9 October. After this voyage, Norwegian Star was transferred to Star Cruises, before cruising for a number of European operators.
Ultimately, she would see out her days as Albatross II for Phoenix Reisen. She was recently scrapped.
Today NCL has re-established its presence in Australia with Norwegian Spirit and Norwegian Sun.
