A/N: This one takes places during season 8, once Kensi’s in rehab and we’re introduced to Sullivan. Borne from the moment when Deeks says Kensi doesn’t want to do things with him.

I’ll Try Not to Take it Personally

They’re driving back from Kensi’s outpatient therapy, a John Denver song in the background, Kensi in the passenger seat, using two fingers to tap out texts on her phone. It’s on the laborious side, but better than when she had minimal function. She chuckles at something. It’s just a little huff of laughter.

It catches his attention though and makes him wonder who or what elicited such a response. Although he in no way blames her, the laughs are few and far between. Sometimes Kensi seems to appreciate his attempts to at humor, while other times she seemed irritated by it all.

His thoughts drift back to earlier in the morning when he’d walked in on her and Sullivan nearly wrestling. The way the guy had talked about him knowingly, almost mocking.

“So, what Sullivan’s story?” he asks, going for casual. Kensi looks up, and when he looks her way for a second, her nose is scrunched in apparent confusion.

“Sullivan? Why do you want to know about him?”

“I don’t know, you just seem to spend a lot of time with him in rehab. Yet you never really talk about him.”

“What’s there to talk about? We do therapy, he says stupid things, I shove carrots in his ears,” Kensi rattled off and he grins. It doesn’t surprise him she’s found a way to turn PT and OT into a competitive activity.

“I’m sure that’s an approved and well-tested therapy strategy,” he jokes.

“Hey, maybe it’s not conventional, but it helps pass the time.” She pauses, then adds, “Even though he annoys me 90% of the time, he makes it easier somehow. I don’t feel like he’s pitying me or whatever. He’s just Sullivan.”

Deeks knows there’s nothing to worry about; he trusts Kensi’s fidelity to him completely. It doesn’t do anything to quell the slight jealousy that rises every time he walks into the rehab unit to find them taunting one another or laughing.

Maybe it remind him a little too much of how he and Kensi started out. Or maybe he’s just that desperate for more time with her.

“Maybe I can come to one of your nest sessions,” he suggests. “I always feel like I’m a step behind when you’re working on something new. I can be your exercise partner.”

“Oh, baby, you don’t need to do that,” Kensi says quickly. He tells himself the slight panic in her voice is his imagination.

“Yeah, but I want to.”

“Deeks…” she sighs. “I don’t want you to see me like that. Sometimes I get frustrated and it’s really not pretty.”

He doesn’t tell her he’s seen a lot of not pretty things in the last few months. Like her in bleeding out under a helicopter or stuck in a coma. Apparently Sullivan can see her at her most vulnerable though.

This isn’t about him, he reminds himself. She’ll look for support when shes ready.

“Do you wanna grab sushi when I get done at OPS?” he asks after a long silence. “The new place has a special on Wednesdays. We haven’t had a real date night since you got released from the hospital.”

“Deeks, I’d love to, but I already made plans with Nell,” Kensi explains apologetically. “It’s this artsy thing that’s only out for a few weeks. I’m sorry.”

“No, it’s ok,” he lies, forcing a smile. “Have a great time with Nellosaurus.”

NCIS: Origins with its winter premiere this Monday began to unspool the story of Michael, as in future NIS Special Agent Mike Franks (played by Kyle Schmid).

While Franks circa 1991 (just barely) dealt with a busted heel on his favorite pair of crocodile leather boots, flashbacks showed us a 21-year-old Michael (played by Berlin Station‘s Brandon Spink) being gifted with the fine footwear by his mom (Gigi Bermingham) and older brother (Matthew Erick White).

A wowed Michael vowed to wear the boots every day, but wasn’t quite braced for the breaking-in period. So, one day when big brother Mason saw Michael rubbing his aching dogs, he simply offered up his own, well-worn boots as a temporary trade. Once the new boots were broken in, the brothers swapped again. But then came news that Michael had been drafted for the Vietnam War. Mason urged his kid brother to make tracks for Mexico, but Michael didn’t fancy himself any draft dodger. As a result, Mason met his brother halfway, and volunteered to go to war with Michael, as their broken-hearted mother waved goodbye.

Will we see the Franks boys actually do battle? And what “heart-wrenching” tale is ahead for Mike and wife Tish (La Brea’s Tonantzin Carmelo)? Here’s what Kyle Schmid shared with TVLine.

TVLINE | How much did the showrunners tell you about Franks’ backstory when you first signed on, or even before you did? They didn’t. I mean, I always figured I’d come onto this and I would be playing a tool to explore the evolution of Gibbs — and yes, I am doing that in so many ways, but the fact that they recognize the opportunity to really explore Franks means so much to me as an actor, to have the opportunity to have a character grow in the eyes of the writers and the studio. When I go to work, I keep my head down and just try and do good work every day, so to experience a little bit of that recognition and have the opportunity to expand and tell that story, it’s an honor, actually. It’s a lot more than I ever expected or could hope for.

TVLINE | When I last spoke to [co-showrunner] David [J. North], after the mid-season finale, he didn’t say it in so many words, but he indicated we’d be getting flashbacks with Franks. I had to double-check with publicity, because I was not expecting that. Dude, I wasn’t, either. I mean, when David mentioned it to me — “Yeah, we’re getting your backstory” — I was like, “Oh, OK.” I didn’t think much of it. And then we get the script for [Episode] 11, and I immediately called [co-showrunner] Gina [Lucita Monreal] and David and just said, “Guys, thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you for writing just something that, to me, seems so meaningful.”

I’ve been doing this for 30 years. Now I’m on this network show, and you don’t know what you’re signing on for, and every single episode is phenomenal, and the writing is incredible, and the characters are so well thought-out, and they add so much…. They’re being very generous with me and the character of Mike Franks.

TVLINE | Have you met the younger you, that actor [Brandon Spink]? I have, yeah. What a great kid.

TVLINE | What do you see in his physicality that matches you, because I couldn’t quite latch onto anything in particular. His physicality had less to do with it than who he was as a person and what he brought to it psychologically as an actor. He’s also a very dedicated young actor, which reminded me a bit of myself growing up and seeing the opportunity to make a meal out of a particularly good opportunity or scene. [Brandon] was hungry, and honest, and the way plays the younger Franks is, to me, so important because Franks has this armor — he’s this gruff man — but below that is this childlike sense of love for people and things, like [NIS K-9] Gary Callahan and the bird with Gibbs. And that was not lost on me when I watched Brandon read this material for the first time. There was a genuine authenticity of caring deeply about the world and what is right.

One scene I think he played so well was when his brother’s trying to get him to run away to Mexico, and he’s like, I can’t do that. There’s a moral compass inside me that is guiding me to do the right thing, even if it is dangerous and even if it means possibly never seeing my family again, but on the off chance that I can survive this, I just want to come home to my loved ones. The way that he played that scene so genuinely, it is kind of like looking in a mirror where it’s [the older] Franks.

Franks lives so deeply in the cases and in his relationships with Gibbs, Lala, Randy, Mary Jo, Tish — all the people that he holds dear — that he just wants to get through it so he can come home to be able to see them, hold them, guide them, and love them. So for me, the physicality wasn’t as important as the intention of the character and the actor. Not to mention, we’re talking about an 18-year-old [actor], right? I’m 40, and I don’t look anything like I did when I was that age. There are liberties that we have to take when you find the right person, and he was the right person for the role.

TVLINE | Without spoiling anything, was there anything the showrunners told you about where this story is going that really piqued your interest? It’s hard to say. Let me think for a second….

TVLINE | Because I heard that you have a big episode coming up beyond this one. When David told you that they were going to be dipping a toe into the Mike Franks story, he wasn’t kidding. We get to see a lot of very deep and very exciting stuff that allows you to see the man that we’ve become familiar with on camera and why he is who he is.

TVLINE | We’ve got to talk about Tish. The last thing David told me was, “Tish asked Mike to leave it alone when it comes to the guy who assaulted her, but the reality is that not pursuing the person who hurt his person is a difficult thing for Franks to do.” It would be a difficult thing for Kyle to do, too.

TVLINE | So, that’s a story that we’re going to be revisiting? Absolutely. There’s an episode coming up, Episode 13, that I’m very proud of. Not to preach David and Gina too much, but it’s hard not to when you signed onto a show and you’re kind of putting your career and your life in these people’s hands, and you’re just, like, crossing your fingers, going, “I really hope this f–king works.” You know what I mean? They wrote 13, and it really is a Mike-and-Tish episode. If it doesn’t leave you with a whole bunch of conflict and emotion, you can’t have a heart, because … in learning the origin story of the assault, we as an audience and as human beings will understand why it is so difficult for Mike to let it go.

I like to joke around that he’s a bit more of a dinosaur, mentally. Like, if there was somebody that needed therapy at NIS, it would be Mike Franks. We dig into their past and Tonantzin is phenomenal in the episode. She’s a pleasure to work with. We get to dig into a different time period in Mike’s life, post-war, and explore the transition of who he was as a lost soul and what makes him who he is today.

I’m trying to pick and choose my words carefully because…

TVLINE | No, I get it. … they’re tight on this stuff. But Mike’s story is heart-wrenching, and I think that the relationship between Gibbs and Mike is so strong because of the things that they share in common and what their innate emotional reactions to tragedy are, the way that their fight-or-flight reaction is triggered and what triggers it. Franks gives Gibbs an opportunity and a second shot at life and is there for him in a way that involves a bit of tough love, and is able to pull him out through his actions and his words, and I think we get to see the inverse of that relationship moving forward.

I just got Episode 16 last night — we’ve got a read-through on [Jan. 27] and start shooting this week — and my mind’s going, “Holy s–t, that’s where we’re going?” I like to operate in a world where I don’t know what I’m doing tomorrow, besides working. And I shouldn’t know where my character’s going in a month. I don’t want to know. I don’t want to think about it. I don’t go to Gina and David, and I don’t beg for answers, because to use a metaphor, we can’t talk to God and say, “Am I going to be OK in two years?” We just have to live every day to its fullest with the integrity and the heart that we have, and that’s the way I feel about Mike.

So, I’m as surprised as you guys are half the time. They don’t let us see episodes until they air, so I sit on my couch with my wife [Legends of Tomorrow‘s Caity Lotz] on Monday night, we pop a bowl of popcorn, I cross my fingers, and I turn on the episode. She always gives me a kiss afterwards, and goes, “Holy s–t, babe, you’re making a great show,” and I can’t thank her enough for that because I love my wife. She’s been in the industry for a long time, and she’s a force, she’s a talent, and to be able to share the experience with her means everything to me.

TVLINE | Are we going to Vietnam with Michael and Mason? I think you’ll get a glimpse of it. You’ll get a glimpse of it, but it’s also not a necessary tool at this point in the story. A glimpse into what we all know, historically, to be one of the most violent wars in American history is all we need. We don’t need to tell the story that so many movies have already told.

TVLINE | I was a bit curious if we’d get some Forrest Gump-y battlefield moment that “forever changes things.” [Laughs] Well, dude, look, we don’t tell this story in order, and I think that’s what keeps everybody on their toes. So, just because we’re kind of moving through some of this stuff as we move through this season, that certainly does not mean that we’re not going to go back and experience other moments in Franks’ life. This is not a linear story. Our memories are not linear memories, right? And I think I’ll just leave it at that.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I Could Have Loved You- This is a SEAL Team fic that explored the six weeks in season 2 where Sonny and Lisa were together in before she would have left for her officer billet. In the end I had her leave even though both of them wanted to stay together. Honestly still prefer it to the shit show the show turned them into.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

It All Fades Away- I finally married Kensi and Deeks off on the beach because the damn show was taking too long. It was really beautiful! Also this is so old that it's only posted on ff.net lol.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not often, especially now that I'm on AO3. People used to be real mean over on ff.net.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

No. I like to let people have their privacy. I will write straight up to the line of smut though.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I have written exactly one 911 LS/The Rookie crossover for @bluenet13 and I only posted it on Tumblr. It involved the Reyes sisters is was generally hilarious.

Someone asked me many years ago if they could translate one of my fics into German and I said yes. I saw it once, no idea where it's posted now.

I have a Ron/Hermione fic that spans the time from the end of DH to 19 Years Later and it's not done and it makes me sad because I really loved a lot of it.

DIALOGUE. I only have one, but I do think I'm pretty damn good at it. Okay maybe also character voice.

When you’re the most-watched drama on broadcast television (and for four years in a row), you probably don’t need advice on what to do and not do. And yet here we are, NCIS.

The most recent season of the well-watched drama aimed to deliver a 22-episode string of character-centric episodes, opening with a mini NCIS: Hawai’i crossover that resolved the mystery of Parker’s seemingly deceptive ex-wife Vivian and then at midseason delivering a 3-way NCIS universe team-up.

Season 20 gave us more of the “Dad” side of McGee (albeit with no actual kids; more on that below!)… introduced Jessica’s sister Robin… revisited the case that put Parker’s old FBI partner in a wheelchair… explored Jimmy’s relationship with growing daughter Victoria… repeatedly taunted us with Russian spies… and gave Torres a blast or two from his enigmatic past.

Speaking of Nick, NCIS left us with the chilling image of him seated across from the man who had abused his mother for years, brandishing a gun and seemingly dead-set on payback.

Looking ahead to whenever Season 21 hits our screens (NCIS, like all of CBS’ scripted fare, is hoped to be back at “mideason” after the strikes are resolved), here is what we do (and don’t) want to see happen. Review our picks then share your own wishes in comments!

WANT: A visit with McGee's whole family

Since the character’s debut in Season 11, Margo Harshman’s Delilah has made 18 total appearances — yet she is barely averaging one-per-season in recent years. And much more conspicuously, we haven’t seen Tim and Delilah’s twins, Johnny and Morgan, since the November 2017 episode in which they were born. References to the rugrats are nice, but we are way, way overdue to see Tim and Delilah parent some actual human beings.

WANT: A tougher, alpha Torres

Maybe it’s just us, but…. Has NCIS never quite made up it’s mind on who Nick Torres is? The past couple of seasons certainly have us wondering.

During his overlap with Ellie Bishop, Torres seemed tougher. Much more of an alpha male. But one who is always hiding (hiding) a sliiightly goofy side. And in the immediate wake of Ellie’s sudden exit, he was shown to be brooding over that loss.

But as of late, Torres seems to more often be the butt of a joke — à la “Hey everyone, Nick doesn’t know this thing, ha-ha!” — than the one cracking the joke. And that makes it harder to connect with the material when suddenly the character is needed to be some, like, badass undercover convict.

Heading into Season 21, we’d like the show to make up its mind about Nick and bring back some of the swagger the undercover vet arrived with.

WANT: Big moves for Jimmy/Jess

One of the very best things NCIS has done in recent years was the incredibly deft handling of this workplace friendship caught fire — from its oh-so-sweet onset to Jess’ treatment of Jimmy’s gunshot wound, from the whole “disclosure form” thing to the blurted “I love you” to Jess wondering about her place in the widower’s life. It’s just been perfect so far, and played wonderfully by Brian Dietzen and Katrina Law. So let’s ride that wave and see the couple tackle at least one major milestone in Season 21, be it cohabitation or a “family adventure” B-story with Victoria.

WANT: Bring back Brigid Brannagh!

It was an unexpected delight to see Army Wives vet Brannagh pop up during Season 20 as Constance Miller, a U.S. Senator with whom Gary Cole’s Alden Parker shared more than a little chemistry. Alas, their eventually revealed insta-romance got derailed when Alden kinda sorta bluntly suggested that Constance was a traitor in cahoots with Russian spies. There’s no “I’m Sorry” greeting card for that, but it’d be great to see the senator again.

Or, if Constance’s instinct was right — that Alden is still carrying a torch for ex-wife Vivian — let’s see Teri Polo again.

WANT: An update on Gibbs... or Bishop... or 'Tiva'... or....

We know that Mark Harmon chose to step away from the role of Gibbs after 18-plus seasons, and Emily Wickersham… actually, why did her run as Bishop end?

Anyway, the point we’re getting to is that while it is understandable that long-running characters such as Gibbs, Bishop, Tony and Ziva will at some point ride off into the (Alaskan or otherwise) sunset, at some point it gets rather odd to not hear a single peep about them!

Yes, the NCIS showrunner has suggested that offering no updates on Gibbs allows the character to “be everywhere and anywhere all at once” (or words to that effect), but can we hear any little something on Bishop, who abruptly kissed Nick good-bye in the Season 18 finale to go be an undercover operative? Or hear tell of what happened when Ziva, who was resurrected and resurfaced for a bit in Seasons 16/17, caught back up with baby daddy DiNozzo (who has been off-screen since Season 13)?

Abby gets the occasional nod; it seems simple enough to do the same for other gone-but-not-forgotten team members.

DON'T WANT: More crises for poor Kasie

In just the past few seasons, forensics whiz Kasie (Diona Reasonover) has cheated death during a shooting at the diner… been held at gunpoint in the squad room by an escaped serial killer… been exposed (along with Jimmy) to a deadly biotoxin… and, most recently, saw her Thanksgiving spent with Jess get crashed by the gun-waving con man who’d been wooing Jess’ sister.

We’ve seen the toll that all of this has taken on Kasie — she quietly began training in Krav Maga! — so it’d be great for her to maybe go all of Season 21 without another brush with death.
