Ayden-Grifton defeats Carrboro in five-set thriller, advances to Eastern Regionals

Ayden-Grifton rushes the field in celebration after a five-set win over Carrboro Saturday in the fourth round of the NCHSAA 2A state playoffs.
Ayden-Grifton's 2019 playoff run is coming full circle from the previous two years.
The Chargers defeated Carrboro Saturday in a 25-22, 13-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-10 thriller in the fourth round of the NCHSAA state playoffs. Ayden-Grifton (21-5) lost to the Jaguars in straight sets in the fourth round two years ago, but found the resolve to come back Saturday.
Ayden-Grifton now faces top-seeded Wheatmore on the the road Tuesday at 6 p.m., the same team who bested the Chargers in the fourth round last year.
“I’m just so excited,” Chargers coach Linda Bryant said. “These girls really deserved this, they work hard all year and (during) that last timeout I said ‘we play with our hearts — you can do this, just stay focused and make the pass. I believe in you, you have to believe in yourself.’ They went out there, played and did it.”
Emily Dykes, who registered a team-high 20 kills, is one of three Chargers who have played all three years during the team’s best run and said the resolve was instrumental in the victory.
“The mentality of getting to the fifth round helped us, and we didn’t want this to be our last game,” Dykes said. “This was amazing because it was Carrboro and we had been blown out by them two years ago.”
The teams split the game's first six points before an Isabella Olson kill sparked a 4-0 run for Carrboro (23-4). The Chargers fought back, eventually using a 4-0 spurt of their own — aided by two Dykes kills, one from Alexia Bryant and an Abby Langemann service ace — to take a 15-12 advantage they would never relinquish. Carrboro would get within 22-21, but Ayden-Grifton kept the Jaguars at bay.
In the second set, the Chargers went up 3-0, highlighted by a Holly Cannon ace, but the Jaguars scored the next four to establish control. Aale’Yah Garris’ block put Ayden-Grifton ahead 9-8, but Carrboro scored the next five points, including consecutive service aces from Olson. Ayden-Grifton wouldn’t recover as Carrboro closed the set out with eight straight points.
The Jaguars kept the momentum in the third set with a pair of Evie Newall kills and a Tymber Harris ace helping to spark a 4-0 start, but two Dykes kills and a Cannon ace were part of five unanswered from the Chargers. Ayden-Grifton went up 12-8, but Carrboro turned the tied with an 8-0 run, including a Taylor Gwynne ace. Although Dykes’ kill brought Ayden-Grifton within 20-18, Carrboro finished the set off on a 5-1 run — punctuated by a Carson Overbeck spike — to push Ayden-Grifton to the brink.
The Chargers came out with a flurry with a 4-0 start in the fourth set, but momentum would swing often in a stanza featuring 11 ties and 10 lead changes. Carrboro took a 9-6 lead before Ayden-Grifton scored another four unanswered, and neither team would go up by more than two from there. Becca Gwynne’s kill had Carrboro ahead 23-22, but Garris countered with a kill and Ayden-Grifton closed out the set.
The Chargers had all momentum in the fifth set as three kills from Dykes and one from Bryant sparked a 6-2 start. The Jaguars came roaring back, tying the game at 7 after a Kyndall Schmoock kill and getting the lead after Trixie MacNeill’s subsequent block. Tied at 10, Garris’ kill sparked the game-ending 5-0 run and sent Ayden-Grifton to its first Eastern Regional.
“We don’t want to lose and we really have the heart to win it all,” Garris said. “This is the first time we’ve ever been here and we’re really excited about this opportunity.”
Alexia Bryant shared similar sentiments.
“We’re really proud to get this win, but we want to do more than just make it past the fourth round,” Bryant said. “We’re looking toward getting past this next round and then trying to win a championship — winning today was another great goal we were able to check off.”
Carrboro coach Steve Scanga said his team played hard throughout, but ran into a very tough squad.
“They gave their all and I have no qualms about how they played,” Scanga said. “Ayden-Grifton played well and we couldn’t stop their hitter Emily (Dykes), who also served very well. All-around, they did an excellent job — we did our best to get them out of their system, and when we did we were successful.”

Postseason play part of NCHSAA’s newest plans for school sports | Local News
Now there is also an outline for postseason play to take place as well.
In most cases, a total of 32 teams will merit qualification for state playoff participation. The number represents a 50 percent reduction in postseason qualifiers in many cases.
Team-related playoff rounds will be reduced from six for five rounds for all sports with the exception of football. The latter will be comprised of four rounds instead of five with the third being the equivalent of the regional finals and the fourth serving as the state championship phase.
Football playoff brackets will be reduced to a pair of 16-team fields within each of the state’s four classifications. All playoff contenders will be determined based on in-conference performances.
The sports of tennis and wrestling will only engage in individual postseason play, with the dual-team portion of action for both are being eliminated.
Second-season brackets will be predetermined. The size of the conference will be used to determine the number of qualifiers from each. Leagues comprised of 1-6 members will receive one automatic playoff berth. Circuits consisting of 7-8 members will be contesting for two automatic bids. Conferences comprised of nine or more teams will receive three guaranteed berths.

The Ayden-Grifton-Wheatmore Preview

No. 3 Ayden-Grifton (21-5) at No. 1 Wheatmore (27-2), 6:30 p.m., NCHSAA 2A Eastern Regionals
The Chargers are halfway through their redemption tour in the postseason.
Ayden-Grifton is playing in its first Eastern Regional after defeating Carrboro in a thrilling five-set match in the fourth round Saturday. The Jaguars took the Chargers out of the postseason two years ago and now the Warriors stand in the way of Ayden-Grifton’s trek to the NCHSAA 2A state championship.
Last season, the teams faced each other in the fourth round and Ayden-Grifton won the first two sets. Unfortunately for the Chargers, Wheatmore fought back and eventually took the contest 21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 17-15 on Oct. 30, 2018. Hope Turbyfill led the way with 30 kills for the Warriors in the win, and has reprised her role as Wheatmore’s leader in the category with 351 on the season.
The Warriors are ranked No. 16 in the state according to Maxpreps and have four players who have racked up more than 100 kills — Turbyfill, Carson Elliott (304), Kelly Williams (156) and Hailey Rae Davis (120). Williams also has more than half of the team’s 104 blocks this season, racking up 55. Wheatmore also has five players who have racked up 35 or more service aces so far, led by Kaleigh Craft’s 53. Craft is the primary passer for the Warriors, as she has recorded 894 assists.
The Chargers won’t head to Trinity without several strong hitters of their own in Emily Dykes (384 kills), Alexia Bryant (207 kills), Aale’Yah Garris (183 kills) and Abby Langemann (70 kills). Dykes (51 blocks) and Garris (34 blocks) have 90.4 percent of the team’s 94, and Dykes leads a quintet of five Chargers with 25 or more service aces with 61. Holly Cannon is the primary passer for Ayden-Grifton, leading the team with 782 assists.

These girls should perform at a Trump campaign High school cheerleading squad on probation for the rest of the year for holding a Trump 2020 banner The incident occurred on Red, White, and Blue night for the football team The football cheerleaders at North Stanly High School were reprimanded after fellow students asked them to hold up a campaign sign endorsing President Donald Trump during a home game last month. North Stanly junior Carson Palmer told WCNC-TV he and a friend brought the sign because of the theme of the night, saying, "It was just what came to our mind when we thought of the United States of America." The two buddies asked the cheerleaders to pose with the sign and snap some pictures, and thought nothing of it until they were called into the principal's office a few days later. The Saturday after the game, the school district released a statement saying, "Stanly County Schools is aware of the incident occurring last night at the North Stanly High School football game. We are currently investigating this matter but as of this morning we have determined this was not an act planned or endorsed by school staff." Ultimately, neither the school itself nor the district punished the girls, but simply asked them not to display further political signs. Yet now, the cheerleading squad is on probation for breaking the rules of the NCHSAA. #maga #trump2020 #cheerleadersfortrump https://www.theblaze.com/news/high-school-cheerleading-squad-on-probation-for-the-rest-of-the-year-for-holding-a-trump-2020-banner https://www.instagram.com/p/B2gUkrKlPZf/?igshid=59vjn38reeam
