The following email comes from @zvilikestv and responds to our discussion of fanfiction-of-fanfiction in Episode 53, “Stealth Fandom.” We talked a little about her response and others’ in Episode 54, but we wanted to publish it in full here as well, with her permission!

I was really disappointed when your discussion about fanfiction of fanfiction turned into a discussion of critique, feedback, and review, for two reasons. One, because I think positioning fanfiction (whether of pro work or fan work) as some sort of literary rebuke is a misreading of the project of fanfiction as a whole. Most fanfiction is additive---let me put more of the thing I like into this world I like, not corrective---let me fix what TPTB fucked up.

In that sense, where fanfiction of fanfiction is not for the prior author (again, pro or fan) or to show them up, but is instead someone responding to work that moved them, not only is it not better to ask permission, but, in fact, you actively should not ask permission.

Asking permission is only a good idea if it is a good idea to let the prior author stop you from making the thing. I think we should not give prior authors that power. I think fanfiction is worthwhile as people telling stories that other stories drove them to, and I don't think we should let other writers stop those new stories.

I think that, after you have posted your fanwork of a fanwork, it's a friendly gesture to send the prior fan writer a link to the post. That's because there's a large number of fan writers who like to read derivative work of their work. However, there's a non-zero chance that the prior author is going to ignore or be upset at you. I think that's fine, as long as the prior fan author sends a max of one mean letter and doesn't encourage their followers to attack you. You make a story, people may react to it, and not all of those reactions may be positive. (It's important to draw a distinction here between pro and fan here. I actually think it would be very weird for you to tell Britta Lundin you wrote Riverdale fanfic, because she can't read it, for legal reasons. It puts her in a very awkward position where the friendly personal thing to do [read and express enthusiasm] conflicts with her professional obligation [avoid, avoid, avoid.])

I know a lot of people disagree with me on not asking permission, which Is why why I have a statement of blanket permission in the same place I post my fanfiction (not on a random episode of a podcast that people reading my fic may never know exists *poke poke*), so people know they should feel free to remix, draw, filk, write fanfiction, podfic, or do whatever based on my fanfiction. Blanket permission is a thing I learned about through podficcing, because podficcers have had a more fraught relationship with derivative fanworks than other fancreators, because a podwork archives the prior work, in addition to making a new thing. (To be clear, blanket permission doesn't have to tell people they can do everything to a fic. It might say, "feel free to make art, but please don't podfic" or "don't create anything from my fanfiction in any way ever" or "ask me specifically about what you're going to do, I want to case-by-case veto.")

So, my position on fanfic of fanfic. You should not ask permission. Recognize that some people will get upset with you if you do that. It's nice to send a link to the posted fic to the author of the prior fanfic.

(NB, if you need to explain the idea of a story remix, I used to tell people to think Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid vs Walt Disney's, but now I urge you to think about Sleeping Beauty vs Maleficent.)

The second reason I was disappointed your discussion about fanfiction of fanfiction turned into a discussion about critique, feedback, and review is because I don't think you made clear enough distinctions between those modes of discussion, even while I think you agree with me that feedback (aimed at the author) is different from review (aimed at the community). (Personally, I've given up on critique and criticism as words for this discussion, because of the connotation they carry in fan circles of telling people what they did wrong.)

To my mind, review ought to occupy a space similar to that of fanfiction, where readers can talk amongst themselves about what they thought of a fanwork or thought because of a fanwork, in the same way one might discuss an episode or season of television.

In the data, 2.2 million debtors who took loans up to N1m owed banks N122bn. Banking sector’s non-performing loans stood at N1.676tn as of the end of March 2019, according to the NBS. The gross loans recorded in the banking sector stood at N15.480tn, while the loans after specific provisions stood at N13.739tn in the period under review. The ratio of the non-performing loans to total loans was 10.83 per cent, while non-performing loans to total loans after specific provisions was 12.2 per cent The figure of non-performing loans at the end of 2018 was N1.792tn, while the gross loans and loans after specific provisions were N15.35tn and N13.562tn, respectively. The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, Ahmed Kuru, said the chronic debtors of the corporation were occupying top government positions. He also said the corporation was working with other agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation to produce a full-length television documentary on the notorious and recalcitrant obligors. Kuru said the idea was to document in a permanent format for generations yet unborn, to know the so-called big men and women that were behind the over N5tn debt burden, which AMCON was battling to recover. The worrisome aspect of the issue, he said unlike what happened in other climes, was that these obligors still manipulated their way to emerge as members of the National Assembly, ministers, chairmen and women of big organisations and pro-chancellors of universities. Kuru added, “Sadly, these are the calibre of people we respect in Nigeria but these people are not role models. How can you be a role model, when you cannot honour a simple obligation? “That is why I have been consistent in the call for the return of the Failed Bank Act. The way we are handling the issue in the country suggests that we are encouraging a lot of financial rascality.” He said people should be held accountable for their actions, which would serve as a deterrent to others.

Early Political Career Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, on October 7, 1952. He grew up with his family in a communal apartment, attending the local grammar and high schools, where he developed an interest in sports. After graduating from Leningrad State University with a law degree in 1975, Putin began his career in the KGB as an intelligence officer. Stationed mainly in East Germany, he held that position until 1990, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Upon returning to Russia, Putin held an administrative position at the University of Leningrad, and after the fall of communism in 1991 became an adviser to liberal politician Anatoly Sobchak. When Sobchak was elected mayor of Leningrad later that year, Putin became his head of external relations, and by 1994, Putin had become Sobchak’s first deputy mayor.

After Sobchak’s defeat in 1996, Putin resigned his post and moved to Moscow. There, in 1998, Putin was appointed deputy head of management under Boris Yeltsin’s presidential administration. In that position, he was in charge of the Kremlin’s relations with the regional governments.

Shortly afterward, Putin was appointed head of the Federal Security Service, an arm of the former KGB, as well as head of Yeltsin’s Security Council. In August 1999, Yeltsin dismissed his prime minister, Sergey Stapashin, along with his cabinet, and promoted Putin in his place.

President of Russia: 1st and 2nd Terms In December 1999, Boris Yeltsin resigned as president of Russia and appointed Putin acting president until official elections were held, and in March 2000, Putin was elected to his first term with 53 percent of the vote. Promising both political and economic reforms, Putin set about restructuring the government and launching criminal investigations into the business dealings of high-profile Russian citizens. He also continued Russia’s military campaign in Chechnya.

In September 2001, in response to the terrorist attacks on the United States, Putin announced Russia’s support for the United States in its anti-terror campaign. However, when the United States’ “war on terror” shifted focus to the ousting of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, Putin joined German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and French President Jacques Chirac in opposition of the plan.

In 2004, Putin was re-elected to the presidency, and in April of the following year made a historic visit to Israel for talks with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon—marking the first visit to Israel by any Kremlin leader.

Due to constitutional term limits, Putin was prevented from running for the presidency in 2008. (That same year, presidential terms in Russia were extended from four to six years.) However, when his protégé Dmitry Medvedev succeeded him as president in March 2008, he immediately appointed Putin as Russia’s prime minister, allowing Putin to maintain a primary position of influence for the next four years.

Third Term as President On March 4, 2012, Vladimir Putin was re-elected to his third term as president. After widespread protests and allegations of electoral fraud, he was inaugurated on May 7, 2012, and shortly after taking office appointed Medvedev as prime minister. Once more at the helm, Putin has continued to make controversial changes to Russia’s domestic affairs and foreign policy.

In December 2012, Putin signed into a law a ban on the U.S. adoption of Russian children. According to Putin, the legislation—which took effect on January 1, 2013—aimed to make it easier for Russians to adopt native orphans. However, the adoption ban spurred international controversy, reportedly leaving nearly 50 Russian children—who were in the final phases of adoption with U.S. citizens at the time that Putin signed the law—in legal limbo.

Putin further strained relations with the United States the following year when he granted asylum to Edward Snowden, who is wanted by the United States for leaking classified information from the National Security Agency. In response to Putin’s actions, U.S. President Barack Obama canceled a planned meeting with Putin that August.

Around this time, Putin also upset many people with his new anti-gay laws. He made it illegal for gay couples to adopt in Russia and placed a ban on propagandizing “nontraditional” sexual relationships to minors. The legislation led to widespread international protest.

In December 2017, Putin reported at his annual end-of-year press conference that he would seek a new six-year term as president in early 2018 as an independent candidate, signaling he was ending his longtime association with the United Russia party. Additionally, when posed the question of why he hadn’t faced significant political opposition during his time in power, he asked, “Should I train contenders for myself?” before adding that he welcomed political competition.

Late that month, a bomb exploded in a grocery store in St. Petersburg, leaving a dozen wounded. In response, Putin said he had ordered security agents to “take no prisoners” during such terrorist attacks, suggesting he would once again ratchet up his patented “tough guy” tone in advance of his country’s election.

In March 2018, during his annual address to Parliament, Putin boasted of new weaponry that would render NATO defenses “completely worthless,” including a low-flying nuclear-capable cruise missile with “unlimited” range and another one capable of traveling at hypersonic speed. His demonstration included video animation of attacks on the U.S., ratcheting up tensions with Washington, though American officials expressed doubt that Putin’s new weapons were operational.

Not long afterward, a two-hour documentary, titled Putin, was posted to several social media pages and a pro-Kremlin YouTube account. If you can’t see a condensation line, run your hand down the side of the bottle you poured water over, and feel for a temperature difference between the top and base- where the temperature changes will indicate how much gas you have left.

Using charcoal? Light early!

Waiting for charcoal to heat up can feel like a lifetime, so make sure you light it early to avoid disappointment later on. Allow up to 30 minutes for the charcoal to ash over and turn white – once this happens you are good to start cooking!

Compared to our more primitive ancestor’s fire-starting just isn’t human nature anymore, so lighting charcoal and keeping it lit can be quite a tricky task, especially for first-timers. To help you spend less time stressing and more time grilling, we’ve put together easy step-by-step guides on how to fire up your charcoal BBQ.

Chimney Starter:

A chimney starter is by far the easiest and most effective way of lighting charcoal and can be purchased separately from any BBQ store.

With fire lighter cubes

Place 2-4 fire lighter cubes (these can be bought at your local hardware store or supermarket) at the base of the chimney.

Pour the charcoal (briquette or lump) on top.

Light the fire lighters from underneath, making sure they are well alight before placing the chimney on your grill grates.

Allow the charcoal to burn, ash over and turn white- about 20-25 minutes. Take caution as flames can appear at the top of the chimney – this is a common occurrence due to the flow of oxygen.

Once ashed over pour them into your charcoal baskets, offset smoker or charcoal bbq, being careful of embers and the heat from the chimney

You’re now ready to start grilling.

Without fire lighter cubes:

This method still requires a chimney starter but takes away the need for fire lighter cubes. However, you will need an open flame from an outdoor camp stove for this method to work.

Fill the chimney with your favourite charcoal (briquette or lump).

Light your gas burner or camp stove and switch it to high.

Place the chimney directly on your burner or stove.

Let the charcoal at the base of the chimney ignite –about 2-3 minutes– (smoke will start to come out the top). Once this happens, leave your burner on high for another 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes, turn off the burner and let the chimney sit for a further 15-20 minutes while the charcoal ashes over.

Once ashed over, pour the contents of the chimney directly into your charcoal basket, offset smoker or charcoal bbq.

You’re now ready to start grilling.

Directly in your charcoal grill:

This method is more laborious compared to using a chimney starter. However, it’s still an effective method of lighting charcoal and takes away the need to purchase a chimney.

Make sure all air vents in your charcoal BBQ are open, to ensure the fire receives the necessary amount of oxygen to keep it alight.

Remove your BBQs grill grates, and place 2-4 fire lighter cubes into the base of your grill.

Mount charcoal (following the instructions on the charcoal bag for the right amount) on top making sure you can still reach the fire lighter cubes with a match or lighter.

Light the fire lighter cubes. Consider using longer matches or lighters for added safety and remember to always be cautious around open flames.

Allow the charcoal to burn and ash over – around 30-45 minutes. The time it takes for the charcoal to ash over depends on the amount of airflow flowing through your grill.

Once it has ashed over, space out the charcoal with BBQ tongs, and replace the grill grates.

You’re now ready to start grilling.

Turn your gas BBQ into a smoker

Don’t have a charcoal or offset smoker? No worries! With this simple hack, you can add delicious smoky flavour to your food. Simply wrap smoking wood chips into a foil envelope, pierce holes into it, so the smoke can escape, and then place it directly on top of the burner.

Just remember to soak your chips in water for a few minutes (so they don’t burn off as quick) and keep your food indirect to your heat source to ensure a Low n’ Slow style of cooking, which is what works best.

How to create a foil envelope for smoking

Using ordinary kitchen foil, tear off two sheets the same size – about 20cm long.

Lay both pieces on top of one another.

Fold the sides together (a few millimetres in from the edge), creasing along the edge as you fold, making sure to leave one side unfolded (this is the opening of the envelope).

Carefully put your hand into the opening and delicately separate the two pieces of foil to form a pouch.

Using the open end put 2-3 handfuls of smoking wood chips inside the envelope.

Fold the open side shut, as you did in step three.

Poke holes in the top side of the envelope (this will allow smoke to escape and fill your BBQ)

Place the envelope directly on top of the burner or grills and set your gas BBQ to high.

Close the lid of your BBQ and wait for the envelope to start smoking- we recommend opening the lid and checking every 5 or so minutes.

Once the pouch starts to smoke, place your food on the complete opposite side of the bbq and adjust the burner temperature to the desired cooking temp (nb. purchase a probe thermometer or use the bbq hood thermometer on your unit)

Close the lid and let your food soak up that beautiful smokey goodness.

A quick guide to pairing food with wood chips:
