Whittaker’s Navy Strength Gin
It all started out in a former 1950s pig shed at Harewell House Farm in the heart of Nidderdale in North Yorkshire, from which Jane and Toby Whittaker launched their award winning Original Gin, ISWC silver medalist in 2016. The success of their gin coupled with the space limitations of their original distillation area, now used for storage, bottling, and labelling, persuaded the duo to build a…

Hello, Lieutenant. I hope you are feeling better and have been able to take some time to rest.
When I am purchasing adult beverages, I notice that certain varieties of rum and gin are advertised as being "Navy Strength". What does it mean to be "Navy Strength", and where and when did this designation come about?
Thank you so much for your knowledge and for all you do. I send my best regards.
Hi,
Well, what can I say, things are slowly getting a little better. I'm now on my third round of antibiotics and hopefully next week I'll be fit enough to go back to work. Otherwise it's going to be a bit tough financially… but to your question.
The origin is a bit strange, but as you may know, food, alcohol, water and gunpowder were stored below deck in special rooms (only from the 18th century) or, as was still common in the 17th century, in the hold. Not really a good combination when you consider that some very drunk sailors accidentally poured their daily ration of alcohol over the gunpowder, rendering it unusable. To remedy this "sore" point, the government decided in the 17th century that gin and rum had to be at least 57% alcohol by volume.
Even if the gunpowder was soaked, it would ignite due to the alcohol. To ensure that the gin on the ships really did have this high alcohol content, some gunpowder was soaked in the gin or rum. If the gunpowder could still be ignited afterwards, it was referred to as gunpowder proof or navy strength. This was later no longer necessary as the items were now stored separately and it was also realised that too much alcohol was not particularly good for the crew, which is why grog was served, but the term for strong alcoholic beverages has remained to this day.

Back in the day, the British Navy gave sailors a gin ration. They found that below 114 proof, the powder wouldn’t burn if the gin spilt! That meant to burn the power to fire the cannons (to sink the French fleet!), the gin had to be 114 proof!
James Lind, a Scottish surgeon discovered in 1747 that eating citrus fruits helped to prevent scurvy and in 1867, the British Parliament passed the Merchant Shipping Act making it mandatory for all British ships to carry rations of lime juice for the crew.
Some people credit Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette as the namesake of the Gimlet. Acting as a doctor to sailors, he administered gin with lime to mask the bitter taste of the limes. Lachlan Rose, a Scottish shipyard owner and patent owner for the process to preserve fruit juice without alcohol created a product known as “Rose’s Lime Cordial” and sold it to the Royal Navy.
The original gimlet with Rose's Lime Juice was created in 1867 as a way to preserve lime juice without alcohol and it was used by the Royal Navy. Mixing the juice with Navy strength gin (114 proof!) the gimlet was born. By the mid-20th century, the gimlet was a popular cocktail with naval officers and in British society.
This Navy Strength expression from Plymouth Gin is an intense spirit that’s perfect for cocktails. This is an award-winning gin with a storied past, having been supplied to the Royal Navy for around two centuries. There’s a classic mix of botanicals in this bottle, including juniper, orange peel and green cardamom, which has resulted in a well-balanced and flavourful gin.

Plymouth Gin
£26.90
An elegant spirit, that was once geographically protected, Plymouth Gin has been made in the same location since the 18th century. This is their flagship gin and is made with Dartmoor water and seven botanicals, including juniper, orange peel and cardamom. It’s wonderfully deep and layered, with sweet and citrusy undertones, making it perfect with tonic or in a Martini. A fantastic value gin, that looks great too.
Sometimes the Navy Strength gin used mermaids on the label instead of battleships and sailors as a nod to Homer & The Odyssey, and to reflect on who rules the waves!
Regardless of which story you want to believe, the drink is worth your time.
The Gimlet
1 1/2 oz of Naval Strength Gin
Juice from ½ of a medium lime
1-2 teaspoons of Syrup
Mix in a rock glass, add ice and serve.
Go Royal Navy!

Suddenly, I’m thinking of the phrase:
“Leg Sleeve Tattoo” and perhaps if I’m lucky enough…”One Sitting”
Relatively certain this is just the Navy Strength Gin talking, but I might need to find a guy out here.

Mon July 24
After a good breakfast at the Haven B&B, we headed to Eilean Donan Castle for a self-guided tour. Situated in a gorgeous location, the Castle tour was quite interesting; it had a long and bloody history, and it played an important role in the Jacobite rebellion (18th Century). It was lovingly renovated in the 1920s. After taking lots of pictures, we headed to the ultra cute Fairytale Distillery, a sweet playground for gin aficionados and their kids. Their gin still is named Tinkerbelle, and the place has lots of fun things to see, like the sign reading “If there’s no gin in heaven I’m not going.”. After meeting the friendly owner (German?) and tasting a couple of gins, we bought a bottle of Navy strength (59%) gin for Corsica. We then headed for Inverness via the northern route, passing by gorgeous scenery (lochs & mountains), and Rogie Falls. Checked into the Culliss House B&B in Inverness.

Easter 2024 - 30th March 2024
Over the Easter long weekend, Matt and I went to Healsville. We had lunch at the Bystander winery and then headed to Healsville high street for a nice stroll. I managed to get awesome $5, 80s top skirt outfit which I'm hoping to wear it some time this year. On the same street Uncle Tony and Aunt Kerrie owned 4 shop fronts. After our walk we made our way to Four Pillars Gin Distillary. We went there for Gin tasting. I really enjoyed the personalised tasting experience. The guide's family all worked there. One of the disllary was named after his grandma. After the tasting , we brought home two gin bottles; Navy strength and the Shiraz Gin. I was got quite drunk from the tastings.

The following day, we went to the Dandenong's botantical garden which was free to see the autumn leaves. We went just the start of autumn so not all the leaves had changed colour yet. We got to see the Award winning garden display. We ended the day with some scones at the Oriental tea house.

Looe Gin Navy Strength
My take on Looe #Gin Navy Strength from @CopperfishD bought from @DrinkfinderUK #GinReview
Looe is a beautiful seaside resort in southeast Cornwall and just off the seafront at West Looe, the town is intersected by the River Looe, is Looe Island, once a site for pilgrims and now a sanctuary for rare plants and wildlife. For gin afficionados Looe is the home of Copperfish Distillery, an enterprising distillery that is making waves from its quayside distillery with a range of spirits…

Explore More @ https://www.alliedmarketresearch.com/gin-market-A11469
The proportion of gin market revenue is expected to surge by about 4.5% year-on-year growth globally. On the other hand, the volumetric consumption of gin is expected to reach 88.4 million 9-liter cases by 2023. Gin market growth continued to perform decently in both off-trade and on-trade channels. However, the outbreak of novel coronavirus has impacted the g through on-trade channels worldwide.
Manufacturers are increasingly focusing on online retailing by dealing with e-commerce giants and developing e-delivery system. According to the report published by IWSR Drinks Market Analysis Limited 2020, the alcohol e-commerce sales are expected to rise by 42% in the core market areas such as the U.S., the UK, Spain, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Brazil, China, and Australia. Among these, the UK is the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of all types of gin, and the consumers in the country are enjoying several options of the product. Thus, manufacturers are capitalizing on increasing production capabilities and export destinations to meet the growing demand from several overseas market.
In developed markets, individuals prefer to “drink better, not more” and seek for products that meet their superior quality, taste, and authenticity. Thus, in response to sustained premiumization of spirits, manufacturers are developing more premium and luxurious gin, which is likely to witness increased adoption among Asian consumers during the forecast period.
The global gin market is segmented into type, price point, distribution channel, and region. By type, the gin industry is segregated into London dry gin, old tom gin, plymouth gin, and others (navy strength gin & bols genever). Depending on price point, the market is classified into standard, premium, and luxury gins. On the basis of distribution channel, it is fragmented into on-trade (pubs, restaurants, bar, and others) and off-trade (online retailers, specialty stores, supermarkets, convenience stores, and others). Region wise, the market is analyzed across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.
Key Findings Of The Study
On the basis of type, the London dry gin accounted for the highest gin market share in 2020, growing at a CAGR of 5.50%, and old tom gin segment exhibited the second highest CAGR of 4.80%.
Depending on price point, the premium gin accounted for about 43.35% of market share in 2020. However, the luxury gin type is expected to grow at a higher CAGR of 5.60% during the forecast period, owing to increase in consumer standards and improvement in economic stability.
Among the distribution channel, the on-trade channel is anticipated to exhibit a decent growth rate during the coming years. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 has declined the revenue generation from this sales channel in 2020, thereby resulting in a decent surge in online sales of the gin and other alcoholic beverages.
Region wise, Europe garnered 54.66% of the market share, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.30% during the gin market forecast period.

Locksley Old Tom Gins (Episode 161 - Part 3)
Locksley Old Tom Gins (Episode 161 – Part 3)
Tumblr media
In the third part of this episode, we taste three fantastic quirky Old Tom Gins from Locksley Distilling Company. The first is a Raspberry and Cardaman gin which is made up of Sir Robin of Locksley Gin infused with around 30 raspberries per bottle and then through a separate distillation of cardamom is added. On the nose, the gin smells very sweet, maybe too sweet for John L’s tastes, but when…
