Wednesday my family and I took a trip out to Vinalhaven, an island off the coast of Maine near Rockland. Vinalhaven is home to the most productive lobstering fleet in Maine, and has a bustling working waterfront. While it wasn't a photo trip, per se, I of course had my camera. Since we walked on the ferry, I stuck around the harbor for my time there, but I managed to capture this image from the far side of the harbor as we walked around. The clouds were amazing yesterday, and vibrancy of the harbor came through in the bright colored buildings, boats, and water. I'm making plans to come back for an overnight. The ferry only runs from 7:30am to 4pm, so if I want a sunrise or sunset on Vinalhaven, I'll need to spend the night and then I can get both. Hopefully I'll be able to do that in the fall. We had a great time on the ferry and on the island. Then, on Wednesday night, I had a cool Milky Way outing at Pemaquid Point. My favorite spot in Reid State Park is Todd's Point, which is about a mile walk from the gate, which is closed to vehicles at that time of morning. Thursday morning, I walked in while it was still dark and explored the rocks. I usually like to watch the waves and see where they are most active, but on this morning, the Atlantic Ocean was perfectly calm, just lapping at the rocks. The sky began to glow pink as the sun broke the horizon and I found this little pool where waves gently rolled in and then receded again. I loved the reflection of color in the water and the soft light on the rocks. It wasn't what I expected but it was just beautiful. *** I extended my sale!! I photographed an incredible sunset last night. I headed to Pine Point in Scarborough, Maine, to the fishing pier on the Nonesuch River, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. I knew there were some dinghies and fishing boats there and it faces the right direction to see the sunset, so I figured it would give me a good chance to make some kind of photo. When I got there, I saw this one dinghy kind of off by itself and I knew that I would make it my centerpiece. I tried a few compositions as I waited for the sun to set, and settled on this one. The tide was on its way out, so by the time I made this, the boat had settled in the sand and wasn't moving about any more. Once the sun dipped below the horizon, the mix of low and high level clouds caught fire and created a brilliantly colorful sky. Easily my best sunset in quite some time. The best part about it?
