Certain essential oils can help our bodies get into a restful state, making it easier to fall, and stay, asleep. Not only do these scents promote relaxation, they also smell nice making the sleeping experience that more enjoyable. Incorporating essential oils into your bedtime routine can help give your brain the cue that sleep will happen soon, giving your mind and body time to adjust and give in to tiredness. This can help make you drowsy and ultimately translate to a restful nights’ sleep. Essential oils provide a natural, almost entirely safe way to help you sleep better, with little to no side effects that conventional (allopathic) drugs can have. Common side effects associated with many sleep medications include daytime drowsiness, disorientation, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, changes in appetite, diarrhoea and burning or tingling in the extremities, amongst others. Many essential oils are known as adaptogens, meaning that they have the ability to adapt their effect based on the person who is taking them. As an example, vetiver essential oil relieves insomnia in some people, while in others the oil creates the feeling of being refreshed and alert when they are actually exhausted. Other oils have definite stimulating effects, making them very unsuited for use as a sleep aid. Oils such as most of the citrus oils (tangerine especially) and lemongrass should be avoided when sleep is the objective. When discussing essential oils for sleep, we can broadly categorise them as oils to use for insomnia treatment (they calm the mind, reduce anxiety and relax the body) and oils that can be used as part of the treatment for snoring and sleep apnea (these oils help to clear the airways). Although this is a relatively new study field, and more research is definitely needed, studies  done so far do indicate that using essential oils as part of your bedtime routine can help alleviate mild sleep problems.
