Newborn Safety

The reasons why you shouldn’t do the highly posed newborn shots like #froggypose and why I choose not to do them.

OK so why are you having your newborn photo shoot done?  You want to remember how gorgeous and tiny your child was when they are big and hairy.  You want them to be able to look at the photos of themselves as a newborn and say, awww I was super cute.  Now imagine an image that makes your newborn look like they are in cirque do soleil as a contortionist!  The poses that make them look like a frog or bundled up in a ball with a hand peaking out.  Now what on earth are you going to think in 20 years time except “Dear God why did we do that!”.  It’s a trend, a fashion, a flash in the pan that is making your baby look like something they are not.  This type of pose will date and will embarrass your child when they get old enough to realise what you did to them when they were born.  Silly beanie hats and bendy poses are not something they are going to want in their homes of themselves and when the fashion moves on they will seem soooo last decade!  

Apart from the obvious point that these are not natural poses and they are actually made up of 2 images as the pose itself is not safe if done in only one shot.  They are super bendy when they are very young, they cannot support their neck and bending them out of shape is not going to help them breathe.

When I do newborn shoots, I create a warm nest for them to curl up in.  If they are under 3 weeks old then they are comfortable in the featal position all curled up so no contorting needed.  I take different angles and close ups, above and to the side and we change the backdrop a couple of times to give people choices.  This is enough I believe to have timeless portraits without getting gimmicky and images that your child is going to be happy with when they are fully grown.  Just imagine your 15 yr old son bringing his friends round to the house and there’s a photo of him as a newborn in a yellow beanie hat in the froggie pose!!  Mortifying!    Natural Newborn Photography is the way to go.

Anyway Rant over with, go natural is my advice.
