The Yakushima is an island in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, known for its wildlife and cedar forests. In the northwest is Nagata Inaka-hama, a beach with seasonal loggerhead turtle nesting grounds.

Artificial islands are pieces of land or structures in a body of water thathave been created by man. These islands have been forged through industrialsystems like dredging, and were not created by volcanic activity. Naturalislands are created by changes in the earth's crust known as plate tectonicswhere liquid magma escapes into the sea and cools, creating a new landmass. Artificial islands can float, or canbe connected to the very bottom of the body of water. These islands also includemegalithic and wooden structures that have been created in shallow waters.Artificial islands are made when additional land is necessary in a process knownas land reclamation. Many reasons lead to the need for land reclamation and someexamples include building an airport when there isn't enough land available,political refuge (creating a land free of political persecution), and realestate projects like in Dubai.
