Journal - 17 Inspiring Examples of Modern Irish Architecture
Got an innovative local project of your own? Enter it in the 8th Annual A+Awards for a shot at international publication and global recognition. Submit your projects before March 27th to be in the running.
Architects love going green, but today it’s not a byword for our preoccupations with eco-friendly innovation. Celebrated around the world on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect opportunity to recognize Irish culture (and have a cheeky pint of Guinness or three).
St. Patrick’s Day originates in ancient times, being the date traditionally acknowledged as coinciding with the death of Ireland’s patron saint around A.D. 493. However, the day is now as much of a celebration of contemporary culture across this fair isle, and architecture represents an important component of the country’s recent drive to embrace modernity.
This includes a number of cracking new projects in the residential, commercial and civic typologies, displaying a surprising degree of diversity and daring by architecture firms across both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Here’s our pick of the bunch. Enjoy and may all the luck of the four-leaf clover be with you on this festive day!
Titanic Belfast by Todd Architects, Belfast
One of the foremost architectural landmarks of the 21st century in Northern Ireland sits on the harbor front in the center of Belfast. The 150,700-square-foot building is the largest museum of its kind devoted to the infamous ocean liner Titanicand is formed by four soaring, aluminum-clad shards inspired by the hulls of boats constructed in this very dockyard a century ago.
Formwork Studio by Architecture Republic, Dublin
On a smaller scale, Architecture Republic conceived this artist’s retreat as a simple textured cube, with workbenches, steps and seating formed by a continuous ribbon of concrete around the room. The minimalist style and lighting creates a serene, calming atmosphere, reminiscent of many works by the king of concrete himself, Tadao Ando.
VISUAL & the George Bernard Shaw Theatre by Terry Pawson Architects, Dublin
This €18-million building forms a multifunctional space for the arts in the Republic of Ireland’s capital city, combining VISUAL — a high-ceilinged exhibition space for displaying contemporary art — and a large theater venue. The building reads as a series of volumes clad with opaque glass and presented on a raised concrete plinth, providing ample day lighting for the galleries in the daytime and forming a contemporary lantern by night.
Dwelling at Maytree by ODOS, Wicklow
This sleek modernist structure looks more like a contemporary gallery than a private residence, with sculptural elements containing open-plan living spaces beneath a steep, tree-covered escarpment. In the midst of the snow-white walls and cool gray window frames, flashes of lime enliven the building’s appearance, and a bold cantilever is supported by a quirky cluster of bright red columns.
The Plastic House by Architecture Republic, Dublin
Architecture Republic returns to our list with this startling residential renovation, which saw a typical mid-terrace house transformed into a futuristic minimalist environment. The interior has been left entirely open with double-height spaces and gantries throughout (only the bathroom is enclosed), and its pure palette of black and white gives it the feel of a 3D Mondrian painting.
Trinity Long Room Hub by McCullough Mulvin Architects, Dublin
Designed as the new Humanities Research Building in Trinity College, the Long Room Hub is intended to form a modern yet contextually respectful intervention alongside the College’s Neoclassical buildings. The building’s façades are comprised of stone and glass to echo the material palette of the surrounding architecture, but the structure’s simplified aesthetic offers a striking contrast within this historic square.
3 Mews Houses by ODOS, Dublin
The raw aesthetic of these private residences in Dublin’s city center nods to the area’s industrial heritage. The cantilevered upper section is comprised of power-coated, metal industrial floor planks arranged in varying widths to create a dynamic rhythm along the mews frontage. Behind this metal veil, open-plan living spaces are punctuated with plant-filled rooftop terraces.
Via Hufton+Crow
Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre by heneghan peng architects, Antrim
Heneghan peng was nominated for the prestigious Stirling Prize in 2013 for this subterranean visitor center, which is designed as an extension of the stunning natural landscape of Antrim’s rugged coastline. The green-roofed Centre is formed from “two folds into the landscape” with stone columns imitating the extraordinary basalt formations of the Causeway itself.
5Cube by de Siún Scullion Architects, Dublin
5Cube is a semipermanent pavilion that was set at Hanover Quay in Dublin in 2015. Sponsored by the European Union–funded ACE for Energy project, the installation physically represents the volume of oil the country consumes every fives minutes. 5Cube encourages viewers to think more deeply about the use of renewable energy in Ireland. One side of the boxy structure reveals 473 barrels of oil, which measures 4.2 meters cubed [about 1,100 gallons]. The opposite side shows Ireland’s target volume of energy used from renewable sources by 2020.
Scale of Ply by NOJI, Dublin
This Victorian, two-story house in Dublin received a major interior upgrade from NOJI in 2014. A previously dark and damp building, the architects envisioned a luminous design with a plywood lattice structure as the focal point. The new interior features a series of interconnecting triangular planes that are positioned to allow deep light into the home throughout the day. With the original ground-floor walls knocked down, the new kitchen and dining space now also extends into covered areas that relate to the garden.
DrlLexicon by Carr Cotter Naessens Architects, Dublin
Set in Moran Park, Dublin, drlLexicon visibly demonstrates the natural fault line between the harbor and the town of Dun Laoghaire. The building is wedged into a granite escarpment that reconnects the two levels of the park. The upper level is conceived as a new public space with a pond constructed as a series of weirs, a raised belvedere that extends toward the sea and a forecourt at the library’s entrance. The building, a concrete shell with a granite and red brick façade, is composed of two forms: Along the street are meeting rooms, workshops and reading spaces, while the park-side space houses a lounge with a “piano nobile” above, each with long windows that frame the park.
Roscommon Civic Offices by ABK Architects, Roscommon
ABK Architects designed a 6,600-square-meter [71,000-square-foot] civic office for the city council on the site of a former criminal justice precinct. The building is created as a series of interlocking volumes and a central, linear concourse that serves as the primary public space, linking offices with a large council chamber at the front of the structure. Dramatic windows line the façade, allowing ample natural light into the building. The unique design also gives way to a variety of external spaces such as woodland gardens, a forecourt and a covered walk sheltered by the cantilevered form of the offices above.
Grillagh Water by Patrick Bradley Architects, Derry, Northern Ireland
Grillagh Water is a contemporary piece of architecture set in rural Northern Ireland that’s built to break through the stereotypes of traditional design in this region. Not only is it a low-maintenance and innovative design, but it showcases how good design within a modest budget can encourage and enliven its occupants. The farmhouse is constructed out of four 45-foot-high, cube shipping containers and is inspired by the form of local agricultural sheds. Its unique cantilevered form features rusted COR-TEN steel and dark gray expanded metal.
Island Dwelling by O’Neill Architecture, Aran Islands
This stunning private home is located on the Aran Islands just outside of Galway Bay in Ireland. It provides spectacular views of the Cliffs of Moher and the surrounding landscape. The 104-square-meter [1,119-square-foot] house is located on the north end of the site with a south-facing garden. The main entrance is located on the lower level with two double bedrooms. A staircase that follows the slope of the hill leads upward to an open-plan living space. A 30-square-meter [323-square-foot] studio sits behind the main building. The project was constructed with a special honeycomb structure clay masonry, allowing the house to be breathable and light amid the high moisture content of the area.
Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and Grand Canal Commercial Development by Studio Libeskind, Dublin
When completed in 2010 and 2011, this mega-project was at the heart of the revitalization effort for Grand Central Harbour. The civic structure is a 2,000-seat performing arts center and a 375,000-square-foot office and retail space. The Grand Theatre has become the main façade of the project, serving as a backdrop for activity and performances on the large public piazza. The two office blocks feature multistory glazed atriums, courtyards and landscaped roofs.
Solid Sanctuary by 4 Architecture, County Sligo
Solid Sanctuary is a striking wooden box set in a vast landscape. The project was designed with a gradually sloping roof and a carved recess that allows maximum natural light into the house. These light shafts also provide diagonal views of the surrounding environment. Vertical slits appear throughout the façade further bringing daylight into the building, while a corner window frames the view of a nearby mountain. While bright and airy, the project also gives ample privacy to its clients.
Flynn Mews House by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects [LOHA], Dublin
The Flynn Mews House was built in the heart of Dublin on the site of an 1847 coach house. The original historic façade was stored and remains the main entrance by way of a small mews. Its design reframes the site using a distinct two-volume formation that flanks an interior sunken courtyard. A glass bridge is suspended across the central void, visibly connecting the interior, exterior and the historic character of the house. This project was part of the Dublin Green Building Pilot Program.

Painted Brick Cottage
Hello, my friends! How are you today? Many plans for the weekend? I certainly hope this brick cottage brings you some joy!
Recently built by Gerrard Builders Hillside House and with interiors by Shannon Bowman Interiors and Carolina Design Associates, this cottage is truly a dream home! In my opinion, it is the perfect size and features interiors and an exterior that will overcome any trends. You can look at this home in ten years and you will think it was just designed.
Here, the interior designer Shannon Bowman, whom I am very thankful for for sharing all the sources below, explains more about the style of this home: “Cozy and Cottage Chic was our goal, however keeping a light and airy pallet almost gives it a coastal vibe. We wanted to keep the charm of the original architecture and blend it with a newer farmhouse/cottage design.”
Find a comfy chair and pin your favorite pictures of this cottage with painted exterior. I hope you have a great time!

“The kitchen cabinets were built by Hardwood Creations in Charlotte, NC. They are paint grade flush inset frames with a recessed panel cabinet doors. The door style includes an interior bead for interest and detail. The smaller top drawers have an outer bead on a slab drawer front to keep the style consistent. We added a decorative and profiled light rail at the base of the upper cabinets to add one more layer of dimension and help hide the under-cabinet lights. The cabinet hood matches the profile of the cabinet doors in one large recessed panel and includes beaded/cove moldings below to create a low-profile mantel design. The cove corbels that attach the hood to the wall are 3” wide and line up with the overall frame of the hood above. The cabinet base includes a furniture style “proud” base with a decorative cove valance cut out.” – Shannon Bowman.

Costa Rica Solo Travel Destinations & Ideas
Solo travel isn’t just for bloggers, backpackers, and whimsical spirits trying to “find” themselves. Feel free to Eat, Pray, Love your way through Costa Rica, but you don’t have to embody the solo travel stereotype to have a great time.
There is something for everyone in Costa Rica. It’s a friendly place for solo travelers with a good selection of hotels and lodges in every major destination. Read through for some unique Costa Rica solo travel destinations and ideas from the Costa Rica Experts.
Join a Pacuare River Whitewater Rafting Overnight Trip (1 or 2 nights)
Solo travelers are often assumed to be adventurous types, which is why we must recommend the level III-IV whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River and its famous rainforest scenery. This tour can be taken as a 1-day trip from San Jose, but the best way to experience the magic of the Pacuare River is on the overnight whitewater rafting trip. This experience takes you deep into the heart of the rainforest via raft. You’ll stay in the rainforest for one or two nights before rafting back out again.
Rios Tropicales rafting
The best option for solo travelers is typically Rios Tropicales Lodge. Rios Tropicales operates rafting tours across Costa Rica and is the gold standard for safety and service on the Pacuare. The lodge is rustic but the natural rainforest playground that surrounds it is the real highlight. While this tour doesn’t operate for just one person, a solo traveler can join an existing trip with passengers already scheduled to the raft.
Pacuare Lodge
Pacuare Lodge is a great option for solo travelers who want a luxury eco-lodge experience in Costa Rica. Guests of the lodge stay for 2 nights and have complimentary experiences included in their stay. On the Pacuare Lodge property, schedule a morning of zip-lining, hike to a waterfall, or just hang out at the riverside spa.
After rafting, you can transfer back to the central San Jose area OR continue by ground to Arenal or Puerto Viejo.
Skip San Jose and Explore the Central Valley
The Central Valley can be a great alternative to San Jose for solo travelers. It’s quieter. It’s greener. The views are usually better. It’s a great entry point to Costa Rica and has some fantastically unique hotels.
youtube
Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation & Inn is a gem in Heredia, just twenty minutes from the airport. Guests arrive at a quaint inn adorned with tropical trees and flowers. Beyond the check-in area, the real magnitude of Finca Rosa Blanca is realized along meandering pathways that lead to fairytale Junior Suites. Each suite is completely different from the next. The common room features hand-painted murals by local artists and the restaurant Is one of the best in the entire San Jose/Central Valley area. The legacy of Finca Rosa Blanca is its coffee plantation, which proudly operates at the highest levels of sustainability and respect for the Costa Rican coffee tradition.
Xandari Resort & Spa
Xandari Resort & Spa is a short drive from the airport but a world away. The lively colors and bold shapes in the architecture and design are a feast for the eyes, matched only by the sweeping views of the entire Central Valley. The spacious villas feature wide balconies, where guests can take in sunrises that creep up from behind the mountains and heavy sunsets that set the sky ablaze on a clear day. The main pool at Xandari uses the scenic valley vistas as a backdrop. The second pool is surrounded by tall, tropical trees and vegetation. Xandari is a great introduction to Costa Rica’s ecology. A morning hike along the property trails will get you acquainted with the rainforest and even a few small waterfalls. The self-serve buffet breakfast doesn’t skimp on Turrialba cheese and endless coffee; fill up here before a day of Costa Rica solo travel activities.
Get Deep in the Rainforest
Solo travel gets real when you’re in the middle of the rainforest. Instead of partying at a hostel or hitchhiking through the country, solo travel can be a much-needed escape from the busy world.
After a night or two in the Central Valley or San Jose, take a short flight to the Osa Peninsula and see what Costa Rica is really all about. The Osa Peninsula is one of the best places for solo travel in Costa Rica because the lodges are small and set within the rainforest. You’ll only be with a handful of other guests at any given moment, and you definitely won’t hear the beat of the club thumping into the wee hours of the morning.
Immerse yourself in the tranquility of remote rainforest life by staying at one of the many excellent eco-lodges in Drake Bay or Puerto Jimenez. Typically, guests stay 3-4 nights at a lodge, with all meals and transportation included. This is a great option for solo travelers, as it puts you in contact with fellow travelers but doesn’t restrict you from traveling as a group.
From the lodges in Drake Bay, you can take a guided hike of Corcovado National Park. You’ll travel by boat to the ranger station before heading out in search of rainforest wildlife. Also from Drake Bay is Cano Island, one of the best snorkel and SCUBA locations in Costa Rica.
Seaside yoga from Playa Nicuesa Lodge
Puerto Jimenez sees the most traffic of the Osa Peninsula destinations, with some of the best eco-lodge within a 45-minute drive. Solo travelers can fill their time with self-guided hikes, yoga, massage, and off-site tours booked through the concierge. Across the Golfo Dulce is Piedras Blancas National Park, with lodges Playa Cativo and Playa Nicuesa giving guests access to its untamed rainforest trails.
Eat Your Way Around
A good meal can mean everything to a solo traveler and San Jose is one of the best places to get a little taste of everything.
Grando de Oro Restaurant
On the refined end, the restaurant at Grano de Oro has been pleasing local diners and international foodies alike for decades. The rooftop tapas bar at Hotel Presidente is a perfect way to begin or end your night in downtown San Jose.
Costa Rica Foodie Tours are a handful of specially curated experiences that give you an honest taste of local food. This fun and casual San Jose food tour will fill you up, give you some social time, and take you on a tour of the Amon neighborhood.
El Castille restaurant solo travelers
Ojochal is twenty minutes south of Uvita on the South Pacific coast and an off-the-tourist-radar spot where you can enjoy some of the country’s best undiscovered restaurants and hotels. Start at Castillo Kitchen for an amazing dinner in a 6-room villa called El Castillo (literally ‘The Castle’ in Spanish). The quaint property peers dramatically over the coastline and while you’d never guess just by looking, it has one of the best restaurants for miles.
youtube
New to the Ojochal scene is Hotel 360, also serving up some of the best views in all of Central America. Dine with views of Cano Island to the south and Uvita to the north. The gourmet menu is constantly reinvented and adjusted to make use of the best local, seasonal ingredients. There is a legend among Costa Rica Experts about the hotel’s creamy seafood risotto.
You don’t have to dine at only hotels in Ojochal; Citrus is a well-known local favorite that always gets it right.
Retreat & Relax
The Retreat
Some people choose to travel solo because they seek respite from the demands of our busy world. Solo travel in Costa Rica is a great chance to reset and feel good about yourself inside and out. The Retreat is a short drive from the San Jose airport, so within an hour or two of landing, you can be relaxing poolside with a healthy tropical smoothie in hand. The Retreat’s yoga platform is a perfect place to start your day.
Bodhi Tree Resort yoga
Continue the wellness at Bhodi Tree Resort, of the best yoga hotels in Costa Rica. The Playa Guiones/Nosara area is one on the Nicoya Peninsula, one of the world’s five Blue Zones. You’ll definitely leave here feeling lucid and centered.
Understand Local Life in Manuel Antonio
Solo travelers who favor off-the-beaten-path locations tend to skip Manuel Antonio. It is one of the most popular places in Costa Rica, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a rich and meaningful experience.
If you’ve already hiked Manuel Antonio National Park and seen the Damas Island mangroves, try exploring the area’s impressive cultural scene.
Santa Juana Lodge
Santa Juana is a rural mountain tour 45 minutes from San Jose and a popular day trip for people who want to explore waterfalls, try tilapia fishing, learn about sugar cane production and processing, and learn about general life in the Santa Juana mountain pueblo. For the full experience, stay at Santa Juana Mountain Lodge for 1 or 2 nights.
The Villa Vanilla Spice tour brings guests in touch with local spices and plants. Dissect the flavors of Costa Rica through an easy-paced morning on a local spice farm.
Base Yourself on the Beach
Tamarindo
Sometimes what you need more than anything else is a couple of days on a gorgeous beach. Tamarindo is one of the most notorious backpacker and solo travel beach towns in Costa Rica and Playa Tamarindo is one of the best beaches. In Tamarindo, you’ll share the beach with a mix of families, couples, groups, and other solo travelers. You’ll have a selection of restaurants, bars, surf shops, and beach vendors to patronize between surfing and sunning. Stay at Tamarindo Diria for something right in the center of the action or Capitan Suizo for something a bit quieter.
Playa Guiones in the Nosara area is a quieter alternative to Tamarindo, known locally as one of the chillest beaches around. This area is famous for yoga, surfing, and general good vibes. Diane Lane and The Red Hot Chili Peppers love it here so why wouldn’t you?
Santa Teresa is perfect for the traveler who is part yogi, part surfer, part explorer. Hit the famous waves with local lifetime surfers, visit Montezuma Waterfall, rent an ATV, or simply walk along the miles of rugged Nicoya coast for the perfect solo adventure.
Go on a Luxury Safari
Nayara Tented Camp
Imagine having a luxury safari tent all to yourself without going all the way to Africa! You don’t have to travel too far for luxury solo travel experience because Costa Rica has you covered. The brand new Nayara Tented Camp is restoring the mystery of the rainforest back to Arenal, while Origins Luxury Lodge has transformed the high-end hotel scene in Upala. The addition of Kasiiya to Papagayo’s coasts rounds out the luxury safari tent experience in Costa Rica.
The beaten path can be tempting, but solo travel is one of the best opportunities to dig deeper into your destination and do things you might normally not in a tour group. We know planning a solo trip can be daunting, so feel free to use this Expert-curated list of unique Costa Rica destinations and ideas to help inspire the adventure of a lifetime!

5 Amazing Week-Long Mexico Beach Vacations for $1,500 or Less — Including Flights
Puerto Escondido and the Coast of Oaxaca
View of the Zicatela from Puerto Escondido/Oyster
It’s no secret: Here at Oyster.com we love Oaxaca. That goes for the whole state, from the mountain towns to culturally rich Oaxaca City and especially its stunning beaches. For now, the majority of Oaxaca’s coastline is blissfully free of major resort developments. Instead, you can expect towns that have maintained their bohemian beach vibes and surfer history, and offer plenty of bargains for sun-seekers. What’s more? Oaxacan food is some of the best local cuisine in Mexico, and you’ll be able to tuck into everything from whipped Oaxacan chocolate drinks to tlayudas and tamales for far less than what it costs to feed yourself elsewhere.
If you want to really get in touch with Oaxaca’s surf scene — and still want to tap into that cool Mexican beach vibe — Puerto Escondido should be your home base. The city itself is one of our favorite underrated destinations in all of Mexico, and you’ll find a more authentic local vibe here than in other well-known beach destinations in Mexico. Given Puerto Escondido’s hidden-gem status — and laid-back surfer vibe — it’s no surprise that some of Mexico’s young cultural scene has made its way here in recent years — an edition of Comunite Music Festival came to town in 2020, featuring Mexican and international underground DJs.
The majority of the city’s beach scene centers on the Zicatela, where you’ll find a number of cool bars and restaurants. The Zicatela is one of Mexico’s most famous surf destinations, and draws legions of surfers from around the world (and travelers seeking surfing lessons, like those offered by Surf Travel & Friends). The waves can be punishing, but it’s still beautiful, and there are calmer waters to be found around Puerto Escondido (the calmest is Playa Carrizalillo — which is the best swimmable beach).
If you’d like to sample some of the region’s other cool towns, head to Mazunte, one of Mexico’s Pueblos Magicos (Magic Towns). There, a postcard-pretty beach is backed by a former hippie colony turned hipster escape. If you’re in Mazunte, make sure you do the short hike to Punta Cometa, which has amazing sunset views along the rugged Oaxacan coast from Mexico’s southernmost point.
You can score hotels in Puerto Escondido for as low as $45 a night, though if you up it to $65 a night you’ll get more for your pesos. That generally holds true whether you’re visiting in high season or not. Of course higher-end hotels — like Hotel Escondido — are available, though you can expect to pay far more. Food and drink is reasonable in Puerto Escondido, especially when compared to other major Mexican beach destinations. You can keep your costs low by crafting lunch from the many food vendors that prowl the sand all day long, slinging everything from tacos to tamales and Oaxacan roasted peanuts. Even if you opt for more traditional dining, you shouldn’t expect to spend more than $30 a day on food. Airfare to Puerto Escondido from most major U.S. cities is incredibly reasonable. You’ll need to connect through Mexico City, but reaching Puerto Escondido’s airport will rarely cost you more than $550 round-trip (and that’s on the high side). There’s really no need to rent a car — even a taxi to Mazunte for a night or two won’t cost you more than $60 round-trip (an hour-long drive, each way), and local taxis within Puerto Escondido are incredibly cheap. All in — including three surf lessons — you’ll still have over $400 left for food.
Our Budget Hotel Pick in Puerto Escondido: Hotel Santa Fe
The pool and kids’ pool at Hotel Santa Fe in Puerto Escondido/Oyster
With its colonial charm and amazing location at the north end of the Zicatela, it’s hard to complain about anything at the budget-friendly Hotel Santa Fe in Puerto Escondido. It’s not the absolute cheapest in town, but all rooms are huge and include their own private terraces or balconies. There are also two pools, and the restaurant serves delicious vegan-friendly fare.

Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya
The buzzing beach in Playa del Carmen/Oyster
You don’t have to go off-the-beaten-path to have an awesome beach vacation in Mexico. Playa del Carmen has long been a favorite among travelers. Its combination of pretty beaches, a lively downtown area, and nonstop things to do have all solidified its place on must-visit lists. It’s also a solid destination for LGBTQ travelers, at least among the Riviera Maya cities and towns.
If you’re on a tight budget, you’re going to be staying in or near Playa’s busy city center. Since that’s the case, a Playa del Carmen vacation is best for travelers who like a nice dose of partying with their beach vacations. The downtown area is anything but quiet — you’ll find tons of packed bars and restaurants throughout the city center’s streets. Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Ave, is the touristy nerve center of these goings on. It’s literally lined with restaurants, bars, street performers, malls, and shops, and is packed with people day and night. The area around 12th Street is particularly wild at night, and is where you’ll find the majority of nightclubs and bars. Tequila shots are practically a requirement for entry.
However, you should note that you’ll be paying more for your meals, and likely won’t get the best tasting food, along Quinta Avenida. The dining scene is comparable to the touristy marina area in Cabo San Lucas or the Hotel Zone in Cancun. If you head inland just a tiny bit, you’ll find far better local fare (plus international options like Italian and sushi) as well as lower prices. Popular spots that aren’t on Fifth Avenue include Los Aguachiles and Cueva del Chango, though street food and low-key cantinas also sling excellent Yucatecan fare at bargain prices. Search out Doña Paula’s pozoles (on 6th Street between 10th and 15th Avenues) and Taqueria El Fogon.
Playa del Carmen is 45 minutes to an hour south of Cancun and the Cancun Airport. You can get to Playa del Carmen by taxi or airport shuttle — budget around $50 each way. Flights into Cancun are cheap from most major U.S. cities, including New York, Newark, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and Miami. It’s a rare occasion that you’ll spend more than $400 round-trip if you time it right. You can find some real bargains on hotels in Playa del Carmen if you are willing to stay off-beach and steer clear of the pricey resorts at developments like Playacar and Maykoba. Around $80 a night should get you some simple, but sufficient, digs, in or near the city center. That leaves you with over $500 to spend on food and drink over a week, which is more than enough, especially if you stick to taco spots and cantinas for one or two meals a day.
Our Playa del Carmen Budget Hotel Pick: Casa Ticul Hotel by Koox Luxury Collection
One of the Pools at Casa Ticul in Playa del Carmen/Oyster
If you want to be near Quinta Avenida and within a 10-minute walk of the beach, Casa Ticul is your spot. Why? Well, it’s a cute boutique hotel that’s a really nice step up from the crash pads that are found at similar price points in Playa. In fact, it’s one of the more charming boutique hotels in town, and features a couple of small pools in case you want to cool off in peace during the day.

Isla Holbox
The pristine shoreline of Isla Holbox/Oyster
Head south from Cancun into the Riviera Maya and it’s unlikely that you’ll find a cheap hotel on the beach. However, if you head north from Cancun into the less developed part of Quintana Roo, you’ll find an island paradise that has — for now — resisted development. Welcome to Isla Holbox.
Holbox has been getting a lot of buzz in recent years, so you shouldn’t expect it to be quite as cheap as some of the other beach destinations on this list. However, it’s still far more reasonably priced than other Quintana Roo beach destinations. And it’s special for a unique reason. You see, this island has resisted the kind of commercialization you’ll find in places like Tulum by isolating itself as much as possible. There are no cars on Isla Holbox, and you need to take a ferry to reach it from the mainland. That should be a clue as to the kind of beach vacation you can expect in Holbox, though in case you needed more of a hint, the island is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve.
Isla Holbox is celebrated for its pristine tropical setting and the incredible diversity of animal and sea life you can find. The lagoon to the south of the island is a major birding area, and is home to flamingos and pelicans. To the north, the Caribbean Sea holds amazing coral reefs and whale sharks. Snorkeling and diving are both incredibly popular activities, with good reason. Whale shark season runs from May through November, if you’re hoping to catch these gentle behemoths in their habitat. You should definitely book one of the many reasonably priced whale shark tours that can put you in the water with them.
Most of the action on dry land centers on Holbox Village, though the pace is sleepy (that’s a good thing — trust us). Like we said, there are no cars, and traffic limited to pedestrians, bikes, and golf carts. The handful of colorful single-story buildings has just enough options when it comes to drinking and dining, and you’ll find zero of the eye-wateringly expensive foodie attitude of Tulum here. You also won’t find any nightclubs, jungle parties, or beach clubs, all contributing to the low-key atmosphere meant for unwinding.
If you’re willing to go the budget or mid-range route and look for bargains well enough in advance of your trip, you can expect to pay around $80 per night on Holbox Island. While you won’t need a rental car on the island, for obvious reasons, you will need to get to the ferry departure point. If you’re only planning on exploring Isla Holbox, you can opt for a taxi from Cancun International Airport or the Holbox Shuttle, which will only run you about $40 each way. Keep in mind that the drive or ride from Cancun Airport to the Holbox Ferry takes nearly two hours. Round-trip flights from most major U.S. cities to Cancun are often incredibly reasonable and can be had without layovers for under $400 per person. If you add in a whale shark tour at around $120 per person, that leaves you around $500 to feed yourself and keep cold Coronas close at hand. While Holbox has its pricier restaurants and fancy coffee shops, you can also find no-frills hole-in-the-wall cantinas that will keep you more than happily fed for a week.
Our Isla Holbox Budget Hotel Pick: Casa BlatHa
Casa BlatHa from the sandy street outside/Oyster
A traveler favorite for more than just its incredibly low nightly rates, this quaint little property gives you easy access to Isla Holbox’s beauty without the cost of the more polished hotels on the island. Casa BlatHa is just west of the main town area, and only a 15-minute walk from Punta Cocos (or under five minutes by bike). There’s a beach nearby, and rooms are simple and quaint, with ceiling fans and — in some — hammocks on terraces.

Sayulita in the Riviera Nayarit
The Bay of Banderas in Sayulita, Riviera Nayarit/Oyster
Perhaps you’ve heard more than a few whispers about the Riviera Nayarit in recent years. The coast of Nayarit state to the north of Puerto Vallarta has enjoyed the moniker of “Mexico’s Next Big Thing” by major media outlets since 2018. And while we’re glad that this beautiful beach region is finally getting the attention it deserves, the truth is that the towns of the Riviera Nayarit have been trending among in-the-know travelers for years. Among those, Sayulita is perhaps the most famous — and with reason.
Like almost all of our favorite Mexico beach spots, Sayulita started its tourist days as a fishing village and surfer decampment, primed for those who wanted to quote-unquote get away from it all. While today it’s very squarely on the tourist radar — and is hardly the no-frills escape it once was — it still draws on that bohemian ethos. Like Puerto Escondido that we told you about up above, surfing still figures largely in the modern-day story of Sayulita, and certainly informs the village vibe. You’ll find plenty of surf shops and surf schools in the region, should you feel adventurous. In fact, some of Mexico’s most famous surfers hail directly from the area.
The town itself flanks the hillsides of the Sierra Madre as they crash into the Bay of Banderas below. This creates a rugged, boulder-strewn coast that’s incredibly pretty. Low-slung houses peek out of the green jungle all around, and the town itself has plenty of cute little bars, cantinas, raw-bowl-and-juice joints, and cafes. One of the most popular spots in town is La Rustica — a Sayulita staple that’s one of the current must-try restaurants in town. You’ll also find a concentration of souvenir shops, all with an artsier side (think: Mexican-chic home decor rather than beer-logo tank tops). Eye-catching Huichol art— made by the Huichol indigenous group from the Nayarit region — is a must-buy when you’re here. The Bay of Banderas and the Pacific Ocean beyond are an incredible place for encounters with underwater life, and humpback whales are numerous in this region during the winter months. You can also head offshore on boat excursions to the Marieta Islands, which are exceptionally photogenic in their own right, but are also home to amazing wildlife of all kinds.
You reach Sayulita by flying into Puerto Vallarta International Airport. Round-trip flights from most major U.S. cities are rarely above $500, though fares are generally far cheaper from western U.S. cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix. Once you’re on the ground, shuttles like those offered by Jose Ramos Transportation from Puerto Vallarta’s Airport to Sayulita are around $140 round-trip, though you can also find cabs for around $50 one-way, if you walk across the pedestrian bridge outside of the airport. The cheapest hotels in Sayulita come in around $100 a night, and you won’t be skimping on style or charm in most spots. You’ll need to be a little more diligent about your budget on food here, though — you have about $260 to spare. But if you stick to making your own breakfast in your kitchen at the hotel pick below and opt for taco lunches, you shouldn’t have to bust out an emergency credit card.
Our Sayulita Budget Hotel Pick: Amor Boutique Hotel
Villa Los Arboles at Amor Boutique Hotel in Sayulita, Riviera Nayarit/Oyster
While Amor Boutique Hotel is a 10-minute walk from the heart of Sayulita, that little bit of distance pays off big time when it comes to charm. The entire hotel has a beautiful local style, and rooms are packed with personality. Even better? The property sits along the Bay of Banderas, has its own pool, and all units feature their own kitchens so you can save money on food costs.

Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo
The beach in Zihuantanejo/Oyster
We’re going to start with some advice: If you’re after a sanitized resort experience, head straight to Ixtapa. You can find plenty of budget and mid-range properties for really reasonable rates within striking distance of the beach. However, you’ll be short on Mexico vibes in Ixtapa, as it’s a purpose-built resort town that’s best for people uninterested in experiencing local culture. But, if you opt for a stay in Ixtapa’s beachy and charming next door neighbor — Zihuatanejo — your Mexico beach vacation dreams can come true.
Come to Zihuatanejo to get away from mega-resorts and experience a charming little town that overflows with artsy atmosphere. Zihutanejo manages to be tourist-friendly yet more authentically Mexican than Ixtapa. The charming town center has cobblestone streets lined with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, and casual bars. It’s the kind of place where you can vibe with the local pace of life, rather than wall yourself off in a resort that caters to your every whim. And if you ask us, there’s no better way to experience a beach vacation in Mexico.
The main beach in town is Playa Principal, but you should head to Playa la Ropa, which is lined with palm trees and backed by amazing beach bars and restaurants. Zihuatanejo offers a nice mix of low-key holes in the wall and more hipster-friendly juice-and-coffee spots. You can also opt for excursions to other nearby beaches. Playa las Gatas is an easy hike via footpath from Playa la Ropa, while other travelers opt for horseback rides on Playa Blanca. If you’re after a day trip, Barra de Potosi is a resort-free little village at the end of Playa Larga; it’s an ideal place to visit if you’re after something even more locals-only. We recommend posting up on its beach for a day and getting a feel for the town’s vibe.
The airport is only a 15-minute cab ride from the center of Zihuatanejo, and you’ll likely be able to put together a flight here through Mexico City from most U.S. East Coast destinations for under $500. You can fly direct to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport from West Coast cities like L.A. Taxis from the airport shouldn’t be more than $5 each way. While you can pay a pretty penny for some hotels in Zihuatanejo (and you’ll be handsomely rewarded for doing so at utterly charming spots like La Casa Que Canta), there are nice budget-friendly options that can be had for $70 to $90 a night. That leaves you around $500 to feed yourself for a week, which is more than doable by mixing meals at local taquerias, beach vendors, and even a few nice dinners by the beach.
Our Zihuatanejo Budget Hotel Pick: Catalina Beach Resort
The pool and bay view at Catalina Beach Resort in Zihuatanejo/Oyster
This hillside property sits next to Playa la Ropa, making it prime real estate for the perfect Mexico beach getaway. We love the pool with views of the bay and hills all around, and the spacious rooms are pleasant enough for travelers who won’t spend all of their time outdoors. There are chairs on the beach for hotel guests.

Did you know that Australia is the third least-densely populated countries in the world after Namibia and Mongolia? With about 1.1 million square miles of interior land (or the Outback) mostly unchanged and uninhabited, the country offers an almost endless array of wildlife and wilderness adventures you can include during your visit.
To help you along, we’ve listed 9 luxury retreats that put you smack, bang in the middle of the Australian wilderness. Here, you’ll discover the pleasures of getting out of the city and onto the road less travelled.

Boasting 180-degree views of the rugged outback and the sparkling sea, open-air ensuite bathrooms with tubs, delectable cuisine at the restaurant, a swimming pool, and helicopter tours – this is barefoot luxury at its best.
Truly isolated, there is no road access to the Lodge. Guests need to fly from either Kununurra or Darwin Airport, or take a 4-hour boat ride from Wyndham.
Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef
This luxury beachside safari camp in the picturesque and remote location of Western Australia’s Cape Range National Park boasts 16 wilderness tents amid a stunning coastal bush setting. Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef is a secluded escape fringed by the inviting warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Unique and luxurious in every way, this retreat offers chef-prepared meals, access to the beach, snorkelling equipment, and well-appointed accommodation. This is one of Australia’s best-kept secrets and makes for a perfect holiday spot for a romantic couples escape or a memorable honeymoon.
The best way to get here is to take an hour and 45-minute flight from Perth to Learmonth Airport in Exmouth. From here, Sal Salis can pick you up and drive you about an hour and a half to the camp. You can also take a scenic flight over gorges and mountains from Exmouth Airport if you prefer.
Longitude 131°
One of the most iconic luxury lodges in Australia, Longitude 131° is a dream holiday destination you shouldn’t miss. Located at the World Heritage-listed site of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, this remarkable boutique resort provides you with a memorable experience that won’t be easily forgotten. The lodge only has 15 individual Luxury Tents and one Dune Pavilion, all well-appointed and surrounded by the rugged beauty of the desert and wilderness. Or relax with a spa treatment and dinner under the stars, if that’s more your pace.
Longitude 131° offers complimentary transfers connecting with all Ayers Rock Airport flights. Helicopter transfers are available from Ayers Rock Airport to Longitude 131° helipad. From Ayers Rock Airport it’s a 15-minute drive to the resort.
Arkaba
The rugged beauty of the Australian Outback is best enjoyed at a place that puts you within reach of its treasures. And at Arkaba, a luxurious 5-bedroom homestead set on 60,000 acres of private conservancy in the heart of the Flinders Ranges, you’ll certainly have it. Explore the area via bushwalking, scenic flight, or on an open-top safari drive. Or enjoy a gourmet dinner with fellow guests or a refreshing dip in the pool. At night, retire to your luxurious suite, savour the fresh breeze from your verandah, then stretch out on your comfy bed as you gaze out at the starry skies.
To get to Arkaba, you can drive about 5 hours north of Adelaide. A quicker option is to take an hour’s flight from Adelaide to Port Augusta then drive from there. You could also charter a private plane from Adelaide to Hawker airstrip and be picked up by your Arkaba hosts for the 20-minute drive to the homestead.
Bamurru Plains
Nestled inside a 70,000-hectare buffalo farm in Australia’s Top End, Bamurru Plains is a luxury safari lodge adored by nature-lovers. It’s as close to a safari experience as you can get in Australia. Featuring nine luxurious safari bungalows and one spacious suite, the lodge allows you to immerse in nature while sipping a bubbly in your cabin, relaxing by the pool, or enjoying a host of outdoor activities. Each tent is set on a timber platform that overlooks the floodplain. Walls made of a mesh fabric allows fresh air to circulate and provides you with unobstructed views of the wildlife that inhabits the area.
Bamurru Plains, on the outskirts of Kakadu National Park, is a three-hour drive east of Darwin. From the lodge gates, a guide will take you to the entrance in a four-wheel drive. Charter air transfers from Darwin are also available.
El Questro Homestead
El Questro Homestead in The Kimberleys not only offers luxury and comfort at every turn, but it also places you in one of Australia’s most dramatic locations. With nine elegant suites built on the edge of the Chamberlain River, some with outdoor bathtubs, you’re afforded privacy and a most impressive view of the landscape. El Questro also provides access to 700,000 acres of wilderness, an impressive array of indoor and outdoor amenities, and tailored itineraries, making it the perfect adventure destination for couples, families and friends.
To get here, take an hour flight from Darwin to Kununurra Airport with Qantas. From Kununurra Airport, rent a 4WD to drive to the Homestead, which will take about two hours. Part of the road is unsealed and unsuitable for regular vehicles, so a 4WD vehicle is a must.
Wildman Wilderness Lodge

We’re sure you’ll be impressed with Mount Mulligan Lodge. With a vast 28,000 hectares of land and only eight rooms, you’ll have access to as much of the outback as you can take. The lodge features an infinity pool with a sunset bar and a pavilion for dining and relaxation. Enjoy gourmet dining, kayaking, fishing, and helicopter tours. For the history buffs, there’s an old deserted mining town that you can explore. What makes staying here even more enticing is that each room — aside from containing every convenience and comfort you’d want — comes with its own ATV if you want to tour on your own.
Access to Mt Mulligan Lodge is via a 35-minute scenic helicopter ride from Cairns, passing over the Daintree Rainforest, Atherton Tablelands, and the majestic Mount Mulligan itself.
From the remote and rugged beauty of the Kimberleys and the Red Centre to the vast blue ocean of the Great Barrier Reef and lush environs of the Daintree Rainforest, these wilderness retreats provide you with the means to experience Australia’s diverse flora and fauna and extraordinary landscapes. If there’s a good time to get off your haunches and sling on that backpack, it’s definitely now.

They are beautiful in addition of offering durability.
Features of Hand-made Melbourne Rugs
Complex hand-made rugs usually hail as a master of art. It needs an experienced weaker to make thousands of knots, and considering the quality of rugs, it takes sufficient of time to weave a sprawling rug. A rug with more knots ensures better quality which is made possible with skills. As the rugs are made using natural fibers with enchanting imperfections, each piece is unique and treasured.
Cherish your house with Antique Rugs
Antique and oriental rugs created experience of years are praised for their classic beauty. However designer rugs are somehow new, they introduce the special feature that was not offered by others-flexibility. Advanced rugs are extensively fit in any type of house.

Besides to finding a rug that compliments the style and function of your space and your specific taste, you also want to consider the size. A wrong size rug can look bizarre, spoiling the unifying presence of your designer rug.
a. Measure your place: Rug bought from Rugs store Richmond should fit in your room. So make your room’s measurements.
b. Measure the furnished area: Get a rug that sizes up from the size of your bed. Rugs should allow uninterrupted movement. Keep minimum 30 to 45 cm of bare floor visible between the end of the rug and wall.
Understand the rug size
Round rugs play adequately in foyers or in open concept areas and also in angular settings. A round rug looks amazing in a square living room or under a round dining room table.
Choose a place in the room where rug suits
Choose a rug that suits the in your room. Lengthy rugs should be placed lengthwise in the room. For a wider room, the rug should be placed horizontally. Keeping it in relation to your furniture is essential. Your rug should cover specific floor area in your room to look attractive.

15 Things To Do in Montego Bay Jamaica
Many people consider Montego Bay THE epicentre for tourism in Jamaica, and with so many things to do in Montego Bay, it’s not hard to see why. The home of the original all-inclusive due to its beautiful sandy beaches and epic turquoise waters, Montego Bay remains the core of the Jamaican traveler’s experience and really is more than just a line in a Beach Boys song.
One of the best things about this small Caribbean island is the diversity in things to do in Jamaica. Montego Bay acts as a microcosm of these amazing activities. Activities that bring visitors face to face with beautiful scenery, thrilling adventures, intriguing culture, delicious food, and that true Jamaican ethos of ‘irie‘.
Sumfest Reggae Festival (One of THE Coolest Things To Do in Montego Bay!)
Started in 1978, Sumfest is THE Reggae music festival in Jamaica every year. It attracts Reggae artists from all over the world, but is a true showcase of Jamaica’s trademark music genre.
Normally occurring between late July and early August, Sumfest is more than just a music festival. Theme parties and fashion shows pop up all throughout the weekend and a food stall of delicious Jamaican grub is never far away.
Eat Real Jamaican Jerk
Speaking of Jamaican food, a trip to the island is not complete without a tasting of real Jamaican jerk. Jamaicans take their jerk very seriously, and not all jerk is created equal. Roadside stalls are often the best places to sample the national staple, so brush off any fears you may have of street meat. If your jerk chicken doesn’t come wrapped in tin foil, you’re not doing it right.
One of the best places to get jerk in Montego Bay is Scotchies, the prefered eatery for any local Jamaican. Scotchies is a classic jerk stand, with chicken, pork, fish and seafood on the menu, as well as many sides to choose from.
☞ READ MORE: The Ultimate Guide to Travelling in Grenada
All tables are outside under the palm frond thatched eves, and despite the odd location, a trip to Scotchies is always worth it. Try the roasted sweet potato, not only is it locally grown, but cooking time and technique softens those snacks to perfection. Eating real Jamaican jerk is definitely one of the top things to do in Montego Bay – and Jamaica as a whole!
Rose Hall Great House
Just east of Montego Bay, Rose Hall is seeped in both historical fact and ghost story lore. This great house sits on a historical plantation complimented with natural gardens and a beautiful pond. The plantation house has been returned to its glory days and serves as an example of the time.
What draws most Jamaicans’ interest to Rose Hall is the folklore attributed to the property. It is said that the proprietress of the estate, Annie Palmer, still haunts it. Rumoured to have murdered no less than four of her husbands (or slaves she took as lovers, semantics were fluid back in the day), Annie is one of the more fascinating characters in Jamaican history, though the truth of the stories remains debated.
Doctor’s Cave Beach
The most famous of all the Montego Bay beaches, Doctor’s Cave Beach is right in the heart of the Strip, and some may argue it is the true birthplace of Mo Bay tourism. Often busy and perhaps too full of hustlers, Doctor’s Cave Beach is nonetheless one of the more beautiful beaches in Jamaica, if not the Caribbean.
The private bathing club which was founded by the beach’s name sake is still around, and amenities at the club and the nearby Casa Blanca hotel can be rented. However, it’s not for the budget traveller in Jamaica.
Ride Horses on the Beach
Many travellers dream of riding a horse through the waves of the Caribbean Sea. In Montego Bay, that dream can be a reality. Ride through gardens on a retired race horse with Half Moon Equestrian before reaching the soft sands of the beaches.
Swimming along the softly crashing waves atop a well cared for horse is an experience that really can not be matched in many other beach destinations!
Raft the Martha Brae River
The Jamaican version of rafting is not the white water type. In Jamaica, a rafting trip down a river, especially one as scenic as the Martha Brae, is a chilled out, luxurious cruise on a bamboo float. This is for sure one of the more relaxing things to do in Montego Bay.
Steered by a local professional, rafting down the Martha Brae is a must do for any visitor to Jamaica’s North Coast. It’s also a great way to see Jamaica’s jungle and hear the local oral history.
Montego Bay Civic Centre
Despite the promised sunshine, it does rain in Montego Bay every so often. An option for those rainy days is a visit to the Montego Bay Civic Centre where one of the best museums in Jamaica lives.
The small museum is housed in a 2002 Georgian-style building. It stands as the only museum in Western Jamaican that speaks to the history of slavery, the plantation economy and lifestyle, and the resistance of the mid-1800’s.
The National Gallery West is also located on this site. A branch of Kingston’s National Art Gallery, this small one room exhibit of Jamaican art is quickly appreciated.

Visit the Glistening Waters
One of the more fascinating things to do in Montego Bay, Jamaica’s Glistening Waters is located about an hour east of Montego Bay in Falmouth. Visiting the Glistening Waters requires a night-time trip to the Luminous Lagoon. This is a natural phenomenon that occurs where the Martha Brae River meets the Caribbean Sea.
The water, due to the mixture of fresh and sea microorganisms, reacts to movement by either boat or humans, and glows a brilliant blue light when disturbed. This phosphorescent activity is one of only 4 places on the planet where such a marvel occurs, and the only one where it can be experienced all year around.
Most hotels in Montego Bay will run evening trips to the Glistening Waters, as it must be experienced after nightfall. Alternatively, taxis can be chartered to take visitors directly there and back again. Try the chocolate cake in the small bar at the boat dock. Trust me!
Indigenous Rastafarian Village
Typically, I am hesitant about cultural tourism. I worry about exploitation and that someone’s culture is being either watered down or ballooned to appeal to an outsider’s taste. The Rastafarian religion is one of the more misunderstood religions in the world, and the Indigenous Rastafarian Village actually does a very good job of explaining the truths and the realities.
Moving beyond the stereotypes, a 2-hour tour of the wooden ‘village’ which includes a drumming circle and a medicinal garden, weaves the visitor through the history, beliefs, and modern-day existence of Rasta. Learning about Rasta, and the intersections of music, nature, love, and lifestyles, deepened my understanding of Jamaica and definitely did away with some of those clichéd stereotypes. When you’re looking for things to do in Montego Bay, put a trip to this Rastafarian Village on your list.
Experience One of Montego Bay’s World Class Golf Courses
As the original tourism haven, Montego Bay was also the first area in Jamaica to start building golf courses (though the oldest golf course in the Western Hemisphere is actually in Mandeville, Jamaica).
There are ample options in the Montego Bay area for hitting the links. Many courses offer world-class fairways, stunning ocean views, and excellent dining for after the game. Jamaica is a year round golf destination, and several resorts in the Montego Bay area offer packages, all-inclusive experiences, and golfing day trips.
In particular, the Rose Hall Great House Golf course offers the best views of the sea from the 16th and 18th tees. And maybe the Witch of Rose Hall will help your long game.
Hit the Waves
Surrounded by turquoise sea and calm currents, Montego Bay is a water lover’s heaven. Scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, deep-sea fishing, and sailing are all options to get off the beach and enjoy the water. Most hotels can set visitors up for day trips, or the tour operators can be approached directly. Hitting the water is one of the best things to do in Montego Bay!
My pick for a beautiful island experience is the sunset cruise on a wooden sail boat with the MoBay Undersea Tour company. There is no better way to enjoy the end of a beach day than with a glass of wine, a sunset backdrop and the quiet wind as your guide.
Other Things to Do in Montego Bay
Montego Bay is the tourist mecca of Jamaica and always has been. A massive variety of accommodation, dining, fun experiences, day adventures, and opportunities to relax are only some of the major draws to the area. Don’t forget to learn a bit about Jamaican life and culture, as the rich history of the island is unique and deep.
Mo Bay is also a great launching point to explore the rest of Western Jamaica. Negril and its beautiful Long Beach is only 90 minutes away, while Cockpit Country, Jamaica’s rugged jungle interior with endless caving and trekking possibilities, is only an hour south of town.
As a word of caution, parts of Montego Bay are definitely overly touristic. The Strip area is saturated with tourist shops, tacky restaurants, and folks looking to take advantage. But don’t let those potentially negative interactions sour the experience.
Many local Jamaicans are glad to have a chat about where you’re from, tell you about life in Jamaica, and generally relax for a while. After all, that is the definition of living the Jamaican irie life, summed up by Mr. Bob Marley when he sang Don’t Worry, Be Happy!

California Modern Farmhouse Renovation
Hello, my dear friends! How are you doing? I hope you could relax during the long weekend and are happy to start this day with a new post as much as I am! Nothing better than taking a little break to get you inspired again, right? I have to say that I feel so grateful for each and every one of you. I might get a little tired now and then but I can’t stay away from sharing new ideas with you. Being able to exchange this great energy and the many inspirations is truly a passion of mine.
Talking about inspiration, having CM Natural Designs on the blog guarantees that you will leave inspired and if you have some extra time make sure to see some of their other projects published on the blog ( here, here and here). This designer and her team is a name you want to keep in mind if you live at the San Francisco area.
Now, let’s talk about this California modern farmhouse renovation. Here, the designer describes this project: “This remodel in Encinitas was such a joy to be a part of. The original house was small, dark and in much need of some love. This young family of three with ties to Ballast Point wanted a spacious kitchen to accommodate their love of entertainment and growing family. The architect divided the home into multiple levels to give each room a sense of coziness while actually being open and accessible to the whole house.”
I hope you have a great time, everyone!

Beautiful Homes of Instagram Hello, my wonderful friends! Christmas really arrived on Home Bunch as soon December started! I loved reuniting many of my favorite of “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” people and featuring their homes all decorated for Christmas, and today, I am very happy to have Paige Loperfido, from @decorandmoredesigns, sharing her pretty home, also beautifully decorated for this magical time of the year. I hope you feel inspired and happier after seeing this tour! “My name is Paige Loperfido and I am married to my best friend, Christopher. We have a 1 year old son named Vincent, who is the light of our lives. Since having our son, I have decided quit my job to be a stay at home mom pursuing her career in Interior Decorating. Chris and I were fortunate enough to custom build and design our very first home back in 2013. Though at times a somewhat stressful and detailed process, it was an exciting and inspiring opportunity that I hope to do again in the future. I think It is important to point out that 90% of the furniture in our home has been purchased second hand at either a garage sale or thrift store and then refinished by my husband and I. Most of our furniture pieces are painted in Behr’s “Poetic Light”. We believe in the notion that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a beautiful home, and a little paint goes a long way. I have always wanted our home to feel cozy and lived in, instead of a display case which is why you will notice little bits of “real life” in my photos. For example: Yes, that is baby proofing on our kitchen cabinets and no I did not take them off for these photos. And yes, that is a reflection of my toddler running into my laundry room shot. Ha! I know all of the other mama’s out there understand.” Beautiful Homes of Instagram Paint: PPG “Grey Tabby” Siding: Hardy Plank Front Porch I knew when building our home that I wanted a large porch and I just love the mix of wood and stone in our entryway as well as the oversized 9 foot door that was custom made for our home. Porch Bench The porch bench was made locally. Wood Stain on Porch Ceiling: “Dark” by Cabot Front Door Wood Stain on Door: Dark Walnut Stain Door Mat: Target 3.5’ Trees: Wal-Mart – similar here. With ample counter space, and plenty of storage I find myself wanting to do something very similar if we ever get the chance to design another home. I also love the open concept of our first floor that allows me to interact with family and guests while in the kitchen. Laundry Room Paige’s laundry room has a subtle farmhouse feel, which I love! Jute Rug: Amazon Paint Color Paint: Glidden “Polo Blue” Master Bedroom Unlike the rest of our home, I wanted our master bedroom to have a bit of “glam” when I was designing this space. Best Beachfront Hotels in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is known for many things: imposing volcanos, mischievous monkeys, dreamlike cloud forest, world-class coffee…the list goes on and on. Most visitors make a point to check out the rainforest, but in almost every case they also head to the beach at some point during their trip. And with good reason; Costa Rica is home to one of the most diverse collections of beaches anywhere in Central and South America. From rugged volcanic beaches to tranquil bays, each Costa Rica beach is different from the next. You could visit the country 8 different times and have 8 different beach experiences, which just means that the choices of beaches and beach hotels can be overwhelming.
Arenas del Mar Beach & Nature Resort | Manuel Antonio
youtube
Arenas del Mar Beach & Nature Resort is one of Costa Rica’s original beachfront hotels. It was originally built in and still stands today as one of the best. Building on the beach is illegal in Costa Rica, where people take pride in the conservation of their natural paradise. Few hotels manage to meet the strict standards set by the government for building near coastlines. To combat their offset, Arenas del Mar has committed to integrating with nature and making sustainability a beacon of their hospitality service. With their on-site guided tours, guests are assigned a local naturalist guide for a more customized experience tinged with Arenas del Mar’s signature service.
The accommodations are an example of understated beachfront luxury, with simple room features and natural colors. Arenas del Mar’s most impressive design is its integration into the surrounding rainforest, which gives guests a nature immersive vacation that includes the beach.
Ah, the beach. Arenas del Mar has two of them. Mhmm.
Tulemar Resort | Manuel Antonio
Costa Rica family vacation classic Tulemar Resort, with its octagonal premium villas and beachfront location, is consistently ranked among the best hotels in the world. It’s easy to see why.
When it comes to large groups and families with young children, travelers are often looking for ease and convenience. In the case of Costa Rica, many of these family vacationers head to Manuel Antonio on the Central Pacific coast – a mix of beach and rainforest all in one location. It’s a no-brainer for families. The tricky part is finding a hotel that meets your specific bedding and space requirements. Each group and family is different, and sometimes standard hotel rooms aren’t the best fit. At Tulemar, the 2-and 3-bedroom Premium Villas give everyone space to spread out and enjoy the views. Each Premium Villa comes equipped with a full kitchen, living area, laundry, outdoor dining space, and more.
Head down to Tulemar’s beach for the day, or explore the nature and wildlife of Manuel Antonio on a guided tour.
Hotel Capitan Suizo | Tamarindo Beach
Tamarindo Beach
Don’t miss out on Tamarindo just because you’ve heard it can get a little rowdy. Sure, there may be gaggles of youthful backpackers and Spring Breakers here and there during the busy season, but is one of don’t have to base yourself right in the center of the action. After all, Tamarindo is one of the best beaches in Costa Rica. It would be a shame to miss on account of the tourist scene.
Instead of diving into the party scene, base yourself at beachfront Hotel Capitan Suizo, a tried and true boutique hotel toward the quiet end of Tamarindo Beach. You’ll still be able to get a taste of the local beach vibe; a walk down the long stretch of beach is a great way to get to know the area and scout local restaurants to try during your stay. But at the end of the day, you’ll feel that quintessential Costa Rica tranquility back in your Beachfront Bungalow at Capitan Suizo.
Andaz Resort | Papagayo
Known around exclusive Papagayo as the “un-resort” resort, the Andaz maintains its commitment to honoring local tradition and representing Costa Rica with warmth and creativity. Their beaches are the opposite of the roaring Avellanas Beach and energetic Tamarindo Beach. The gentle waters of Papagayo Bay are catered to activities like swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. This unique location on Peninsula Papagayo creates for guests a natural playground, wonderful for couples, families, and even solo travelers. Head down to the hotel’s beach club for access to all of the best features of this unusually calm golden sand beach. BONUS BEACH: Grab a kayak and paddle around the Peninsula to hidden Playa Nacascolo for a “private” beach experience. Chances are good you’ll be the only ones there!
Nantipa Resort | Santa Teresa
youtube
The Nicoya Peninsula’s Mal Pais area, which includes the notoriously chill Santa Teresa, has seen a recent resurge in tourism and it would be hard to leave Nantipa Resort out of that story. The hotel is leaning into the concept that Santa Teresa is a destination all of its own, and there is plenty to explore for first-timers to Costa Rica.
The remote, rugged coastal location of Santa Teresa (on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula) have always magnetized celebrities, but the average traveler can be spotted there, too. One of the places travelers thanks to beachfront Nantipa and its ocean view bungalows.
Nantipa is perfect for travelers who appreciate a sense of place when they travel – trendy luxury on the beach is often best achieved with a casual layout. The Experts recommend the Oceanfront Bungalow with Private Pool for the most ideal stay. You’ll have earned it on the 45-minute drive from Tambor airport – it’s mostly gravel roads.
Once you’re at Nantipa, you’ll have access to a great variety of Santa Teresa highlights. Montezuma waterfall is about 45 minutes away by ATV. You can hike around the famous cascade or even try canopy zip-lining. Day trips to Tortuga Island are popular with travelers in search of a beach adventure day, fully stocked with water activities, tasty food, and excellent guides. Horseback riding on the beach, sportfishing, surf lessons, yoga, nature tours, and other experiences can be built into your custom itinerary or arranged with the help of Nantipa’s concierge. Spend anywhere from 3-7 nights here and your idea of what a beachfront hotel can offer will be transformed.
Hotel Aguas Claras | Puerto Viejo / South Caribbean
The South Caribbean has long been a secret sweet spot for independent travelers and eclectic ex-pats, but only recently has the Puerto Viejo area earned a reputation as something more than hostels, hippies, and wild coastline. The arrival of Aguas Claras has changed the game dramatically.
You don’t see many cottage-style accommodations in Costa Rica and you especially don’t see them done as well as Aguas Claras, a beachfront boutique hotel serving up a new side of the South Caribbean coast. The water in front of the hotel is the closest you’ll get to that “Caribbean blue” in all of Costa Rica, where 90% of beach vacations happen along the Pacific coast. There are just a few suites and bungalows at Aguas Claras, so the Experts recommend booking early.
The Four Seasons | Papagayo
The Four Seasons Papagayo is a true leader in Costa Rica’s hospitality scene, continuously walking the line of impeccable, refined service and curated vacation magic. The stunning scenic location at the very edge of the Peninsula is one of the hotel’s most prominent features, giving guests access to not one but two fantastic beaches. Four Seasons also offers special beach activities for families and groups, including private beach barbeques, snorkeling & beach tours, and picnics. Within just 45 minutes from the Liberia international airport, you can land and be at one of Costa Rica’s best beachfront hotels in the blink of an eye.
The W Resort | Playa Conchal
Big resorts are getting a makeover and The W Resort on Playa Conchal is a gleaming example. If your family prefers a trendy vibe with name brand recognition, The W Resort Costa Rica delivers. You’ll find all of the typical resort amenities with a splash of Costa Rican flair at all turns. The rooms are situated throughout the property at various heights and locations, ensuring that each room has a different view from the next. Playa Conchal is one of the best all–around beaches in Costa Rica, with its unique shell sand formation and pleasant, swimmable waters. Golf, water sports, sportfishing, and plenty of off-site Guanacaste activities are available to really round out your vacation.

#1. The hotel (i.e., who should stay at the hotel, who might prefer to stay elsewhere, the hotel’s property, hotel room accommodations, and dining at the Arenal Observatory Lodge) #2. Nature trails and things to do (i.e., observation deck lookouts, onsite museum, nature walks, challenging hikes, waterfall visits, and other things to do at the Arenal Observatory Lodge)

THINGS TO DO AT THE ARENAL OBSERVATORY LODGE
If you have already read our related blog post Costa Rica’s Arenal Observatory Lodge Series – Part 1: The Hotel, you may have already decided to spend a night (or more) at the Arenal Observatory Lodge. If so, you may be asking yourself what there is to do onsite, beyond staple activities (such as swimming or relaxing) that most hotels in the region offer. Fortunately, the lodge’s eight hundred and seventy acres of property offers plenty of things to do, including horseback riding, mountain biking, birdwatching, museum exploration, observation deck visits, and countless nature trails varying in walk/hike difficulty, distance, and duration.

THE ARENAL OBSERVATORY LODGE: OBSERVATORY DECKS
One of the first things we did upon arrival at the Arenal Observatory Lodge was check out the observatory decks. Although the Arenal Volcano (as well as Lake Arenal and neighbouring Cerro Chato) can be viewed from many places throughout the property (including many hotel rooms and balconies/terraces), we found the volcano view obtained from the main building’s third floor observatory deck to be the best; not only is the deck positioned directly in front of the Arenal Volcano, but the roofed/shaded room (comfortable to access on both rainy days and sunny days) provides wall-to-wall sliding windows for clear spotting and gentle air flow, chairs for relaxing in, and helpful guides to “birds around the decks” that illustrate bird species spotted from the lodge. Additional observatory decks exist in front of the Arenal Observatory Lodge’s onsite restaurant (this deck is uncovered), as well as in the tower that comprises the property’s onsite museum.

THE ARENAL OBSERVATORY LODGE: HISTORY AND MUSEUM
Perhaps the most unique component of the Arenal Observatory Lodge is it’s history rooted in forest regrowth and volcanic research. Following the Arenal Volcano’s significant eruption in 1968, the Arenal Observatory Lodge was a pioneer in reestablishing the area’s surrounding forest by planting new trees and trying to preserve primary forest that survived the trauma. When the American Smithsonian Institute’s research took aim at the Arenal Volcano in the 1970’s, the lodge became both a resource and a haven for student scientists given its close yet safe proximity to the volcano. Fast-forward to today, and not only does the Arenal Observatory Lodge continue to cater to students, but it has developed into a La Fortuna hotel that offers a hospitality experience that is as rich in science and education as it is grounded in the Arenal region’s history. Fortunately, as we describe in our related blog post Costa Rica’s Arenal Observatory Lodge Series – Part 1: The Hotel, despite the hotel’s strides toward tourism development, it remains a low-key and humble lodge that lets the breathtaking Arenal Volcano sell itself.
As a treat to guests of the Arenal Observatory Lodge, the hotel’s onsite museum features newspaper clippings of the Arenal Volcano’s past eruptions, samples of lava rocks, geographic maps, bird guides, wildlife guides, and an abundance of photography. Also on display is a live seismometer that tracks the volcano’s current activity. While visiting, don’t miss the small, third-floor observatory deck above the museum for an additional volcano-viewing opportunity.

THE ARENAL OBSERVATORY LODGE: NATURE TRAILS
A visit to the Arenal Observatory Lodge simply would not be complete without a nature hike. With a network of over eleven kilometres of trails to choose from (the entirety of which may be hiked without a guide, if self-guided exploration would be preferred), it is often difficult for travellers to know which path to take. To summarize the most popular trail options to choose from, the following are the approximate hike durations of each, arranged in order from the least difficult hike to the most difficult hike:
The Saino Trail takes approximately 45 minutes to complete (round-trip)
The La Hormiga Trail takes approximately 20 minutes to complete (round-trip)
The (Danta) Waterfall Trail takes approximately 1 hour to complete (round-trip)
The Los Cangrejos Trail takes approximately 30 minutes to complete (round-trip)
The River Trail takes approximately 40 minutes to complete (round-trip)
Although we are familiar with each of the trail options available at the Arenal Observatory Lodge, our trail recommendation(s) depend on the type of hiking experience a traveller is looking to have. Beginner hikers and/or travellers in search of a basic nature walk on primarily flat land will be satisfied with either the Saino Trail, or a combination of the Saino Trail and the La Hormiga Trail. Hikers in search of a more challenging hike (comprised of some uphill/downhill sections) will prefer either the (Danta) Waterfall Trail and/or the Los Cangrejos Trail. As the property’s most challenging trail (with the exception of Cerro Chato), the River Trail offers the most rugged terrain, alongside significant inclines and declines. As a result, we recommend the River Trail only to experienced hikers interested in an “off the beaten path” trekking experience.
Note:
The La Hormiga Trail is an offshoot of the Saino Trail and cannot be accessed without first hiking at least a small portion of the Saino Trail.
Note:
The Los Cangrejos Trail begins approximately two kilometres from the Arenal Observatory Lodge’s main building, on the way to Cerro Chato. Although the Los Cangrejos Trail takes only thirty minutes to hike, this duration does not include the time needed to get to and from the hotel’s main building and the trail. Given the significant walk required to get to and from the trail, we typically only recommend that visitors opt to hike the Los Cangrejos Trail if they plan to hike Cerro Chato as well.
If your time at the Arenal Observatory Lodge is limited, at the very least, hike the Saino Trail and the (Danta) Waterfall Trail. Experiencing both is easy, as neither trail is overly far from the hotel’s lower building, and when combined, both trails can be hiked within a period of two hours. Alternatively, you may opt to participate in the Arenal Observatory Lodge’s complimentary onsite walking tour (called “the morning tour”) that departs from the hotel’s reception each morning at 8:30am sharp; the lodge’s free walking tour passes by the Saino Trail, heads to the Danta Waterfall, and typically completes the circuit by 11:00am.

Saino Trail / La Hormiga Trail
As the Arenal Observatory Lodge’s easiest hike, the Saino Trail is ideal for all visitors, including senior travellers, young children, and mobility impaired visitors. It is also beautifully landscaped and well-manicured, which makes the the flower-filled route as easy on the eyes as its paved pathway is on the feet. From catepillars to coatis, and cicadas to curassows, we saw so much when we made the loop around the Saino Trail, including the La Hormiga Trail add-on too!
Tip:
Don’t miss the Arenal Observatory Lodge’s small frog pond at the northernmost spot where the Saino Trail and the La Hormiga Trail meet. Better yet, opt to visit the frog pond at night for a frog serenade!

Danta Waterfall Trail
As noted above, the (Danta) Waterfall Trail and the Los Cangrejos Trail are the Arenal Observatory Lodge’s intermediate hiking trails. Since we do not recommend hiking the Los Cangrejos Trail unless you also plan to hike Cerro Chato, our obvious favourite choice for a moderate hike is the hotel’s (Danta) Waterfal trail. Not only does the hike provide a nice mix of uphill, downhill, and flat sections, but travellers are spoiled with the site of a beautiful waterfall along the way. If you are a waterfall-lover (and if you have already checked out the many other waterfalls that call the La Fortuna region home, as described in our related blog post The La Fortuna Waterfall And Other Arenal Waterfalls Worth A Visit), the Danta Waterfall should not be missed.

River Trail
If you have hiked the Saino and La Hormiga Trails, as well as the (Danta) Waterfall Trail, you may be in search of an additional challenge. If so, try the River Trail accessed just below the hotel’s onsite restaurant and outdoor (uncovered) observatory deck. Unlike the Arenal Observatory Lodge’s other onsite trails, the River Trail is rugged, dense, and steep. Although there is not too much to see along the way that differs from the property’s other trails, the River Trail’s reward comes from accomplishing the brief, yet daunting, hike itself. Alternatively, for a full-day adventure and an extremely physical challenge, guests may opt to hike Cerro Chato. Although Cerro Chato is not owned by the Arenal Observatory Lodge, one of its two access points is located on the Arenal Observatory Lodge’s property. As a result, guests of the lodge (as well as day visitors) may choose to hike Cerro Chato to and from the hotel, if they dare. For more information about Cerro Chato, including why the dormant volcano holds such a dear place in our hearts, don’t miss our related blog post A Proposal To Remember: Costa Rica’s Cerro Chato Hike.

Three Inspirational Scandinavian Interiors Achieving Pastel Perfection
Scandinavian style isn’t synonymous with bright colouring. Exposed brick in reds and greys alongside white French windows and light-wooden furniture are characteristic of the style. Bring Scandinavian styling and dreamy pastels together, with these three apartments for inspiration. Want a baby pink couch in your lounge? Pair it with a pea green coffee table, flowing chiffon curtains and monochrome accessories. Love a boldly patterned wall? Pair your polka dots with pops of pastel and lightly-coloured wood. Smear pastel across iconic prints, afront a mint feature wall. Paint in pastel with these three inspirational interiors in mind.
Visualizer: Imade pastel 60sqm can be made into a decal-filled Scandinavian interior, as this pastel apartment shows. Using splashes of baby pink, soft teal, grey and white, each coloured element surprises by stretching beyond the eye’s expectations. In the living room, a triangular pattern forming a rug on the floor stretches up to a wall decal, where it becomes larger and more alive. Reflected in a motley of patterned cushions and decorative plates, the theme extends and is punctuated by a striking photo of a woman in vintage dress. Simple Scandinavian furniture in two round coffee tables and a wooden shelf hold pastel accessories. Hints of green in two mini cacti and a potted tree inject nature.
From the couch, a different view presents itself. Breaking the white of the kitchen and above-TV wall, a wooden entrance painted in mint green leads to a simple front door. Paired with white coffee tables, a middle cabinet and breakfast tables, white acts as one colour amongst many in this interior’s palette. With the help of Scandinavian shelving and more potted cacti, the look becomes consistent across the space. A pink, white and grey block cabinet laden with art deco prints spots the difference.
At another 45 degrees, a kitchen in teal makes itself known. A white French window opens up the space, while the white breakfast table ensures light is not obstructed. Mid-tone Scandinavian wood graces the counter, while patterned cushions, pastel and chrome appliances mix the old and new.
Stepping back to form a fuller view, tile brickwork in the splashback and an iconic SMEG in sunshine yellow round off the kitchen’s look. Against a mast of white, pastel crockery visible through glass cabinets draw the eye high and back to the door, a veritable smorgasbord of sweet treat illustrations. A matching yellow painted bench gets the final word on the way out.
Visualizer: Duong Arc Marie Antoinette and Frida Kahlo headline this pastel apartment space, a mix of coloured walls and more muted offerings. Painting its French dado cream, a burst of mint masts this room of many leaning prints. A black leather couch peppered with stone and monochrome cushions eggs on a charcoal rug, as Scandinavian plant stands dot the room. Towards the right, large sliding doors open up to a balcony and mirror the legs of furniture – the round coffee table, the gold legs of a pod chair coloured in stone. A pale wooden floor zigzags its way to a low TV cabinet and TV which, in its thick frame, mirrors the prints on its opposing side.
Towards the other corner, we face a beautifully-integrated and unmistakably-Scandinavian dining room. As French dado skirting winds around the walls, Marie Antoinette’s image is painted bright with graffiti atop a square standing cabinet. Black, white and wooden Scandinavian-style chairs, sourced from About A Chair and designed by Hee Welling, add a focal point that isn’t too busy. Indoor house plants in the form of large potted trees, sprayed ferns, moss and cacti tie the room in, while a cluster of glass and earthenware jars provide a centrepiece for the table.
A quick turn around the corner reveals a quiet and traditional Scandinavian kitchen. Taking a break from the colourful main area, the kitchen occupies two walls framing a large window. Sitting astride stone-coloured walls, one side features an inbuilt oven, stove and chrome extractor fan; the other a large bench and sink area cradled by a fridge. French panels reminiscent of the lounge’s dado panelling are broken by glossy white tiles, a Scandinavian staple alongside wooden benches and rows of spoons and ladles.
Visualizer: Pavel Pisanko Light, bright and dreamy, our last interior uses block pastels and bold patterning to effect. Focused in a lounge coated in white walls and flowing chiffon, a pink three-seater welcomes us in, with a soft grey wingback and lilac recliner as sitting friends. Lit by a sprinkle of wood and glass pendant lights, their differing heights create a relaxed feel over white and green coffee tables. A pale wooden floor gains interest with zigzagging detail, a narrow row of shelving interest with wine. Almost hidden by the impact of surrounding white walls, two rectangular arches create easy flow across the space.
Towards the left corner, a study space lurks in almost full-scale white. Broken by two monochrome quote prints, grass pots, a wooden figure and mint reading lamp, the space is framed by three windows that enhance light and provide a view outside. A simple white school chair and steel-legged desk are stylish tools for working.
Through the white rectangular arches, the dining room beckons with a pastel mosaic adorning the wall. Two Muuto Unfold Pendants, made of silicone that rolls up on itself, drop light on the table without drawing too much attention. Continuing the pastel theme, a company of chairs painted in baby blue, pink, white and wood create a scene on the same zig-zagged wooden floor. Matching the dining room pendants, a long line of chiffon curtaining provides a softer background.
The bedroom dazzles with full-scale polka dots across one side. Matched by a stencilled maze patterning the wooden cabinet, its subtle texture is lit by bedroom pendants above a low-lying bed. Two slat benches either side elongate the space, while a wood and thick, iron-legged end table provides a place to drape clothes. With Scandinavian accessories in the form of vased twigs, glass bottles, monochrome prints, and potted plants held on window ledges, cabinets and painted ladders, a rocking chair and two pastel Muuto Mhy pendants offer the final touch to a bedroom daringly different.

Marnie and Ryan Hawson attended numerous house inspections when they were looking to buy in 2011, but this 1890s property in Riddells Creek, a town in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges, was the only one that ticked all the boxes. ‘We were attracted to it because of its soul, quirks, character and history. These are always the things I look for in a house – that certain something that makes you feel like it’s a home,’ says Marnie. The couple were hoping to move in before their wedding in March, so when the real estate agent was closed for Christmas, they took matters into their own hands. Marnie recalls, ‘We actually knocked on the door and said we wanted to buy the house. It then went to a blind bidding war between us and another couple, and we won!’
Despite having been here now for nine years (!) it’s only recently that Marnie and Ryan have undertaken minor renovations. At the heart of these update is a 50-year-old AGA oven, sourced 18 months ago. ‘Friends and family donated to an AGA wedding gift fund, so it is very special. It just took us eight years to find the right one!’ says Marnie. The kitchen has been refurbished around this oven and features existing cabinetry, brass elements and a vintage Czech galvanised washing tub that’s been repurposed as a sink.
Also on the property is a separate, small weatherboard building, which was formerly the town’s post office! With the help of Belle Hemming Bright, Marnie and Ryan recently converted this space into a cosy private bar nicknamed the ‘Misses Sutherlands‘ – an homage to the two sisters who once lived in the home, and ran the post office for 50 years.
Another nod to the property’s history are the hundreds of original post office boxes dotted around the home. These boxes were purchased from the local post office for the price of scrap metal, and now store everything from bottles of wine, to cleaning products and shoes. ‘The problem is remembering where we put each item!’ says Marnie.
The styling of the house stays true to Marnie’s values, showcasing classic, well designed pieces that will stand the test of time. ‘I’d rather buy once and buy well, to have something for life,’ she explains. ‘Everywhere I can, I support businesses who value natural materials, ethical workmanship, and sustainable practices. I also love to buy vintage items, as I think that most things are better with age and a good story.’ Tying the rooms together is an almost uniform use of Dulux Antique White USA, layered with simple, natural tones and materials.
The most recent project the couple have undertaken is ripping out their lawn and completely redoing the front yard.
