I absolutely adore the ES/LS verse! The characterizations are so spot on! Do the ES guys ever find one of the early Supernatural books (a hunt that they already finished) that somehow got left in the library (maybe by Charlie?) and read it before saying anything to the LS guys about it?

i would LOVE for ES!Dean to be snooping around in either LS!Dean or LS!Sam's room and finding the book buried in the nightstand, clearly forgotten, but also clearly dog-eared and spine cracked. he almost puts it back down, absolutely gobsmacked at the naked, oiled up men on the front looking broodily into the distance.

his first instinct is to show ES!Sam right away, and get his feedback, and it isn't until he's standing in front of ES!Sam with the book in his hands, about to hand it over, that he realizes there are pages of "dean"--or maybe actual dean--waxing poetic about some chick's "wet curtains," followed by a few pages of dean watching sam sleep and thinking about how "he can never tell him everything."

not to mention, a few paragraphs worrying about some girl named ruby and a few chapters of sam staring at dean askance, before plotting about how to make some guy named alistair's head explode.

"'heaven and hell'?" ES!Sam asks, fingers brushing the cover skeptically. "what kind of name is that?"

and ES!Dean snatches the book back. "um. actually, nevermind." but ES!Sam finally wrests it from him, and dean winces when the book opens--not at the awkwardly emotional pinball scene--but right on the scene where dean "thrusts his passion into the wet cavern of anna's heat."

ES!Sam's eyebrows climb higher and higher, eventually looking up at dean completely and utterly flabbergasted.

"read the back," ES!Dean says, defeated, and sam mouths the words that dean has practically already memorized. We rejoin intrepid monster-hunting brothers Sam and Dean Winchester in a thrilling new adventure. The Winchesters must find out why the angels Castiel and Uriel seem to want the prophet Anna Milton...

they sit down and dean watches sam's face as he reads it, occasionally lifting his head to ask about certain characters or lines, or to repeat the most egregious ones ("did they seriously call your dick your 'flesh rod'?")

when it's over, dean reveals that he found it in LS!Sam's nightstand, buried under random detritus, clearly forgotten. ES!Sam immediately snaps the book shut.

"but that doesn't explain why only my sex scene was bookmarked," dean wonders, while sam Will Not Look Him In The Eye. "or why there were practically highlighted fucking passages about how precious you look standing next to a pinball machine."

ES!Sam presses his mouth together because those are exactly what parts he'd highlight. he'd want to be reminded that dean loves him, straight from his own brain. this fictional version of dean's view of him was surprisingly touching throughout the whole thing, but sam is going to be dead before he says any of this.

he shrugs.

they slap it on the library table later that night, right in the middle of the LS!Winchesters talking in hushed tones about something. they both stop in their tracks, their eyes slowly turning to look at the book cover like they're in a horror movie.

"you swore you BURNED THEM." LS!Dean explodes, jumping to his feet, and LS!Sam immediately jumps on the book like he's jumping on a grenade.

"i did!" he stammers. "you know i hate these fucking things! i must've-uh--missed this one. i completely forgot about it! i have no idea where he found this."

LS!Dean tries to tackle him, fighting to wrest the book from his hands, but LS!Sam is fighting him like a bobcat, trying to shield the book with his body.

"what's the 'pit'?" ES!Dean asks.

the two of them freeze. LS!Dean's head slowly turns.

Feyre and Nesta hated how their father handled things and because of that they did not have much love for their father who was not a "fighter". As a result they chose his opposite when it came to who they ended up with, they chose two impressive warriors.

"How you were treated by your father as you were growing up helps shape your view of men in general and what you expect of them"

Compared to her sisters, Elain did love her father and it seems his gentle nature was something she latched on to.

"he was smiling mildly at his beloved Elain, the only one of us who bothered to really speak to him at all."

My father smiled freely, laughed readily, and doted on Elain, who in turn doted on him.

My father murmured his praises to Elain, who beamed at him and rested her head on his shoulder.

When depressed her father turned inward and shut down, not entirely different from how both Elain and Lucien have processed their past traumas though I will say Lucien definitely does not like to sit idle.

When happy, Elain's father smiled freely and laughed readily (similar to the Lucien we saw in book 1 and the Lucien we got hints of once he left Spring - he's not fully himself yet but it's easy to see who he is when not dealing with the all the heaviness).

And her father was business savvy to a certain extent:

I spied my father hunched over his desk, a little scale before him as he weighed an uncut ruby the size of a duck’s egg. He was clear-eyed again, and moved with a sense of purpose, of vibrancy, that I hadn’t seen since before the downfall.

The only reason his hand was forced with the three ships at the start of the series was because of bad deals made by the three generations before him.

Elain never seemed to care that he did not fight for them in the cottage, seemed to hang on to his words when he spoke of business deals and only ever seemed to desire his affection. To her, that was enough.

So it's worth paying attention to how SJM made sure to continue drawing even more parallels between Lucien and Papa Archeron:

Elain's first real love (her father), the man she held in high regard, and her mate share a way with words and intelligence.

And just as her father was very open with his affection and praise for Elain, SJM has written Lucien to share that characteristic as well. He was soothing and comforting with Feyre when he thought she had a nightmare and is complimentary of his female friends, always speaking highly of them.

I like how she's basically taken Elain and said, "I see your stubbornness when it comes to the mating bond but I'm going to literally make it impossible for you to not fall for Lucien in the end because I'm going to write him to be everything you respect and desire AND he's going to share a bond with the first man you ever loved."

That last part is huge because Elain can't talk to anyone else about her father without it bringing up negative emotions for them.

In Lucien (and even Vassa), SJM has given Elain another person who she can fondly remember her father with as they too share in those similar memories.

right ok for the uninitiated, a psychopomp is a spirit or deity or creature or other entity responsible for guiding the souls of the newly dead to the afterlife.

i’ve talked about this part before but: silver eyes are associated with death (and grief) in many ways, both symbolic (reaper imagery) and material (the glare arises from the drive to protect the living, and ruby’s memories of people she’s grieving inspire hers, and the glare destroys the hand cinder used to kill pyrrha).

but why do i say psychopomps, specifically?

when people on remnant die, their souls pass through the liminal white void ‘between’ realms, as we see with ozma (who returns from the afterlife through the white void) and penny (who meets winter there) and arguably fria (the white flash at the moment she dies) and ruby (who returns from the tree—a metaphorical death—in a burst of pure white light, unlike the white-gold we see with afterans). so the white light released by the glare at least resembles the white void which bridges the gap between the living and dead.

right?

now consider this sequence of events:

ruby witnesses pyrrha’s death.

white light bursts from her eyes like wings, petrifying the wyvern, burning pyrrha’s killer, and leaving ruby unconscious.

months afterwards, ruby either begins to or continues to experience dream-flashbacks to pyrrha’s final moments (“do you believe in destiny?” “yes.” <- ruby wasn’t there.) which alternate with pyrrha calling out for jaune (in apparent fear or desperation, so it’s not simply the recording intruding on her dreams)

after ruby voices her own grief for pyrrha (V5) and learns more about her eyes from maria (<- while surrounded by butterflies the symbolism is very unsubtle), jaune is ‘found’ by an autumn leaf (<- symbolizing pyrrha) that leads him to pyrrha’s memorial, thus allowing him to release his own grief and make peace with her death.

#4 is akin to salem transforming in the pool of grimm and the resurrection of humankind in that a literal causal relationship isn’t explicitly shown but the symbolism and narrative structure suggests a meaningful connection; salem was alone until she was reborn and returned changed to a world that had likewise been reborn and changed, ruby carries pyrrha’s unfinished business forward with her (the dreams!) until she understands the true nature of her eyes whereupon pyrrha’s spirit (symbolized by that leaf) finds peace by helping jaune let go.

a similar thing happens in volume nine. ruby wakes up hearing echoes of penny’s voice in her head calling her name, and she’s haunted through the ever after by penny’s sword—a representation of penny’s soul and a symbol of ruby’s grief. this is only the beginning of grieving penny, so the arc is not complete yet, but thus far it’s on the same general track.

thennn there’s ‘guide my way,’ which is about summer rose from ruby’s perspective and, well, the title. it invokes the imagery of a psychopomp explicitly—“guide my way out of this place”—which reinforces the subtler imagery used in ‘indomitable’ (“i’ll meet you there/when we strive, we transcend/even death cannot end our climb”)

the twist is that silver-eyed psychopomps are meant to guide the living through grief as much as they are meant to guide the dead into death; they do not bridge the divide only in one direction. this of course befits a world where death is apotheosis (“for it is in passing we achieve immortality; through this we become a paragon of virtue and glory to rise above all, infinite in distance and unbound by death,” “our souls transcend death,” everything the lost fable does with salem’s deaths and resurrections, ruby’s experience in the tree, etc) and merely part of an unending journey rather than ‘the end.’

there’s also (gestures vaguely) whatever is going on with the hounds, which i do not think was as simple as salem ganking a silver-eyed warrior and making a grimm out of him; she’s experimenting with the boundary between life and death in some way, because of what ruby’s glare did to cinder.

In about a few weeks... Months...? of being in this place, you could finally leave Ricarda's room! But of course, under the supervision of Kristina and Gaetana. But, only Gaetana is looking after you. In most cases, Kristina tries to touch you or harm you in some way. But with less enthusiasm than in the first weeks (since her bruises and ribs, and a couple of bones still haven't healed after a "preventive conversation" with Ricarda). And speaking of Ricarda... lately, she's been spending less time in the house. But she "redeemed" that in front of you with gifts, and EVEN MORE physical contact. But much more than that...And today, she told you about an upcoming "partnership meeting" with the leader of another gang. And it was only after a long conversation that you found out some details about her gang. She is the head of the gang - "Unbridled City". Her nickname is crocodile. Gaetana's nickname is the fire ant, and Kristina's nickname is the python. There are 4 gangs in total. "Unbridled City" (Ricarda's gang), "Creepy Mountains", "The Wild Sea" and "Dangerous Forests". But recently, the "Wild Sea" has COMPLETELY destroyed the "Dangerous Forests", for unknown reasons. According to Ricarda, she will soon go to a meeting with the leader and associates of the "Wild Sea gang" ... They are also called "Megaladon", "piranha" and "dolphin".... This meeting will be interesting..

They're wearing suits too. Gaetana costume - has a dark shade of cheerful. And Kristina's costume, it's not even a costume, but just an ornate red turtleneck, a dark red jacket and black trousers.

- Kristina: do we have to wear this...?

In response to this, she got kicked in the ass by Gaetana.

- Gaetana : Kristina! You wouldn't complain, but would make a compliment (your name) . Do you see how beautiful she looks? Although she's always like this..

You smile back softly and thank her, and Gaetana only smiles back at you faintly. And then Ricard speaks up.

- Ricarda: Well... We have to go, guys!

You go outside and the sunlight blinds you... The smell of nature... The smell of freedom. For a moment, you had the idea of escaping...! But you realized that in the first millisecond when you jerk in the other direction, they will immediately stop you... That's why you humbly sat down next to Ricarda and Gaetana in a parked car. And Gaetana shielded you from Kristina so that she wouldn't do anything for which she would then be "calmly scolded" by Ricarda.

The head of this gang is a tall and seemingly adult woman, she has rather creepy facial features, slightly tanned skin, blonde hair with light strands and turquoise eyes. She has a couple of scars on her face and some piercings... And how is it clear that this is the leader? Ricarda immediately approached her, and after shaking her hand, they began to talk about something.. You couldn't make out what they were talking about , of course , but you heard fragments ... And you realized that they were discussing the export of drugs to other cities and possibly states, the elimination of bad "chemists" and just not very good workers, and how to raise the efficiency of their subordinates..

And the close people of the head of "The wild sea", these are also two girls.. The first girl, with Asian appearance and pale skin... There are several rather large scars on her face, she has long black hair and dark eyes... And she immediately went to chat with Kristina. No matter how it was expected.

- ??? - Hey... Sorry, can we chat, yeah...?

You turned around... It was the second of the people close to you already understand who the hell. She is a rather tall girl, she has tanned skin , blue eyes, dark brown hair, soft facial features and a scar extending from the left corner of her mouth and on her left eyebrow. Further explorations in Sorcerous Sundries:

A kid who is trying to convince his mother to buy him a pet elemental - that he "won't let it die like the goldfish."

A woman named Cappa who points out that the place seems to be mostly out of stock at present; there's apparently been a lot of panic buying around the arrival of the Absolutists.

Another person named Hector! It's a dwarf in a green frock coat, a healer who is upset about the low stock as well.

Cappa and dwarf-Hector have some rather concerning ambient dialogue about how Lorroakan doesn't offer much in the way of customer service, and implying that he has been known to beat up any customer who tries to go up to his tower and lodge a complaint.

Conjured animals keep appearing and disappearing in all directions. I'm pretty sure it keeps startling Hector terribly every time it happens, but that Karlach finds it delightful.

An apothecary couple buying supplies, who seem to have a better relationship than Derryth and Baelen do, and who apparently named their cat Lord Pawtash.

A dead body which is being used as a sales display for necromantic spells, which is highly unsettling.

Upstairs are several locked doors, which I'm assuming lead to Lorroakan's tower; before Hector can investigate, though, we're greeted by Avina a projection similar to those we've seen from Gale.

"Welcome, dear patron, to the floor at the top of the stairs! If you have information about the NIGHTSONG, great riches await! If you are here to waste the great wizard Lorroakan's time, reconsider. Let your knowledge determine your path forward."

Hector has zero interest in either discussing Aylin or great riches, but he is already SUPER suspicious of Lorroakan, as everything he's hearing/seeing is coming together into a picture of a real asshole who beats his apprentice (and his customers if they cause trouble), and he suspects whatever this man might have in mind for Aylin is probably not too many steps above what Balthazar did to her.

This impression is very much strengthened by the fact that, as soon as the projection is done talking, four portals appear on the landing, each labeled with a different plaque:

"The Nightsong is an ancient potion that allows its drinker to become irresistibly attractive to man and god alike." "The Nightsong is a druidic staff that allows its bearer command over an army of ancient beasts." "The Nightsong is a priceless ruby from a realm beyond our own." "The Nightsong is an immortal being, the child of a deity."

Obviously we know that the fourth is the correct one and therefore, presumably, the correct portal to go through. (I'll investigate later, perhaps, what happens if you go through one of the wrong ones. XD) The interesting thing here, though, is that this shows quite clearly that, whatever he told Aradin, Lorroakan absolutely knows Aylin's actual nature and has his own plans for her.

So we will definitely be going upstairs to have Words with him, but we'll talk to the bookseller downstairs for Gale first.

Ruby and Sapphire

Ruby, Sapphire, and Fancy Sapphire Most people don't realize that ruby and sapphire are both gems of the mineral corundum. Both of these gemstones have the same chemical composition and the same mineral structure. Trace amounts of impurities determine if a gem corundum will be a brilliant red ruby or a beautiful blue sapphire. It is surprising that "impurities" can produce such wonderful results!

Red and blue are just two of the many colors found in gem corundums. Trace amounts of other elements can produce brilliant yellow, orange, green, and purple gems. Red corundums are known as "rubies," blue corundums are known as "sapphires," and corundums of any other color are known as "fancy sapphires." Impurities cause corundum to occur in a spectrum of colors, and when it is completely free of color-causing impurities, it is a colorless gem known as "white sapphire."

Ruby and Sapphire Birthstones Ruby and sapphire both serve as modern birthstones. Ruby is the birthstone for the month of July. Sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September. They are excellent choices for birthstones because they are well know gems and because many people love red and blue gemstones.

Ruby and sapphire are not inexpensive gems and that causes a challenge when they are used as birthstones. Many people want to give a birthstone gift to a child and hesitate to give a child a gift that is costly. Or the shopper would like to give a birthstone gift, but has a limited budget. To accommodate these shoppers, the use of synthetic birthstones in low carat gold or sterling silver mountings provides a lower cost option. Synthetic corundum and synthetic spinel are often used.

What Makes a Ruby? Rubies are gem corundums with a dominant red color. The color can range from orangy red to purplish red or brownish red. The most desirable color range is a pure vibrant red to a slightly purplish red.

The red color of ruby is produced by the presence of chromium in the gem. A small trace of chromium will produce a pink color. To be considered a ruby, there must be enough chromium to give the gem a distinctly red color.

Finally, rubies must have a combination of color and clarity that makes them an attractive gem. Opaque pieces of corundum with just a hint of red color are not rubies - they are common corundum.

Ruby Treatments Very few specimens of corundum have a natural color within the range required for a ruby. Very few also have the clarity required to produce a nice faceted stone. Long ago, people who prepared gem materials for cutting began experimenting with ways to improve their color and clarity.

Heating Heating corundum crystals under controlled conditions can improve or intensify their color. Heating can also remove inclusions by causing them to dissolve, making them less visible and improving the clarity of a gem.

Most rubies in the market today have been heated to improve their color and clarity. This heat treatment is normal and expected in the gem trade, but a seller should disclose the treatment to a buyer in advance of a sale.

Fracture Filling One of the early treatments was to fill surface-reaching fractures with oils, waxes, or resins. These treatments filled pits and fractures on the surface of the gem and improved their appearance. However, these treatments are not permanent because the oils can be washed out, and the waxes and resins can crack and fall out with age - even with special care. They produce a temporary improvement in the appearance of the stone and are mainly done to produce a quick and profitable sale.

A more permanent type of fracture treatment is to fill the fractures with minor amounts of flux, glass, or another durable material. These enter the fractures during the heat treatment process. When the stone cools, a permanent filling of the fracture was accomplished. These treatments reduce the visibility of the fractures and improve the clarity of the gems. They also might improve the durability of some stones. This type of treatment is generally acceptable but should be disclosed to the buyer.

A much more aggressive treatment is to heat the gem to a very high temperature and inject glass or flux into the fractures. The temperature of this treatment can be high enough that some of the ruby melts and mixes with the fracture-filling materials. The result of this treatment is an altered stone with an improved appearance. But the stone now contains an unknown and possibly significant amount of non-ruby material. If these gems are sold “by the carat,” the buyer might pay a significant portion of the price for non-ruby material. Many people believe that these treatments produce man-made composite materials that should not be called “ruby.”

What Makes a Sapphire? Trace amounts of iron and titanium can produce a blue color in corundum. Blue corundums are known as "sapphires." The name "sapphire" is used for corundums that range from a very light blue to a very dark blue color. The blue can range from a greenish blue to violetish blue. Gems with a rich blue to violetish blue color are the most desirable.

Gem-quality corundum occurs in a wide range of other colors, including pink, purple, orange, yellow, and green. These gems are known as "fancy sapphires." It is surprising that a single mineral can produce gemstones of so many different colors.

When the color of a sapphire is any color other than blue, the color should be used as a preceding adjective to describe the stone. For example, pink sapphire, yellow sapphire, or green sapphire. Used alone, the word "sapphire" refers only to blue corundum.

Sapphire Treatments Just like ruby, sapphires are subjected to a wide variety of heat and fracture-filling treatments. And, just like ruby, any heat, fracture-filling or other type of treatment should be disclosed to buyers.

Spectacular Heat Treatment Results Some rough materials that have no trace of blue color can be heated to produce a spectacular blue. Some milky to yellowish, cloudy to translucent corundum can be heated to yield stones that are transparent and bright blue. If such treatments have been used, sellers should disclose the types of treatments to potential buyers when the stone is presented for sale.

Lattice Diffusion Some sapphires are treated by a process known as "lattice diffusion." In lattice diffusion, the sapphire is heated in the presence of a material that will release tiny metal ions. When the corundum is heated, its lattice expands enough that these tiny ions can diffuse into the gem and become trapped within the lattice when the corundum is allowed to cool. The trapped ions prevent the corundum from contracting to its normal dimensions, producing a defect that alters the color of light passing through the gem.

Beryllium diffusion can produce orange, yellow and pink colors. Titanium diffusion can produce blue. Lattice diffusion treatment is considered to be a severe treatment that is sometimes hard to detect. Some people believe that corundum which has a color produced by lattice diffusion should not be called "sapphire."

Mining Rubies and Sapphires Most gem-grade corundum forms in metamorphic rocks, such as schist or gneiss; or in igneous rocks such as basalt or syenite. However, gem corundums are rarely mined from the rocks in which they form. Mining small gems from hard rock is possible, but it is very expensive, and many of the gems are broken during the mining process. Fortunately, corundum is very hard and resistant to weathering. In many areas, natural weathering and erosion have liberated the stones from their host rock, and carried them into streams over long periods of geologic time.

Today, the gems are mined from these stream sediments. Their high specific gravity relative to other sediment particles often causes currents to concentrate them in small placer deposits. Most rubies and sapphires are produced by washing the gravels of these stream deposits. This work is often done by hand because the deposits are small and irregular in shape and character. These deposits are often located in countries when wages are very low and artisanal mining is prevalent.

Noteworthy locations where gem-quality corundums have been produced include Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, China, Australia, Madagascar, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Malawi.
