This here is by far my favorite plant of Southern California. Not because of its towering stalk and beautiful white flowers, but more so about its traditional benefits that have been long forgotten. You might not know this, but the root to this beautiful plant are sold in most grocery stores. The root of the non-flowering plant is used to make medicine. Yucca is used for osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, migraine headaches, inflammation of the intestine (colitis), high cholesterol, stomach disorders, diabetes, and liver and gallbladder disorders. Almost all of the yucca plant can be used as food. The stems, leaf bases, flowers, emerging stalks as well as the fruit of most types of yucca are edible. The stems or trunks of yucca store carbohydrates in chemicals called saponins, which are toxic, not to mention taste of soap.
